Small, least conspicuous fish species are targeted through subsistence fisheries in many regions of the world, but little is known about their population dynamics or exploitation levels. In the Western Ghats of India, part of a global biodiversity hotspot and an exceptional region of freshwater fish diversity and endemism, several small species of loaches are caught and sold in the local markets by marginalized communities through an unmanaged fishery, resulting in high levels of exploitation. Of particular concern is the fishery for the spiny loach, Lepidocephalichthys thermalis whose exploitation rates at various sites in the northern part of the Western Ghats region were observed to be greater than their E50 (exploitation rate where the stock is reduced to half its virgin biomass). A comparison of various fishing sites showed that populations in the high anthropogenic impact areas (located close to urban settlements with high human population density, and impacted by various threats, i.e. introduced species, pollution) are exploited at a rate greater than 86% of their Emax (exploitation producing maximum yield). The first quantitative information on population dynamics and exploitation levels of small indigenous fish species in tropical rivers indicates their potential vulnerability to over fishing, and is an important starting point for further investigations into similar fisheries in other regions of Asia and Africa.

Introduction: Type 2 diabetes is considered a chronic and progressive disease. The term diabetes in remission has no consensus definition and the question whether diabetes "remission" or "cure" can achieve any long-term benefits in people with type 2 diabetes remains unclear. The aim of our study was a review of our district wide diabetes population to determine the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of those who had a diagnosis of diabetes but did not meet the diagnostic criteria for diabetes at the point of assessment in 2014 and then to review their diabetes outcomes over a 5-year time frame.Methods: In a whole population based non-interventional epidemiological study amongst 17,308 people with diabetes, we identified 991 with diet treated type 2 diabetes who met the baseline criteria for diabetes in remission (HbA1c < 48 mmol/mol (6.5%)). Over the next 5 years, 385 (39%) people had a cumulative HbA1c attainment of <48 mmol/mol (6.5%) and remained free of diabetes medication.Results: In this erstwhile remission group only 130 (13%) were free of any vasculopathy, whilst 255 (26%) had some form of micro or macrovascular disease, of which 64 people had been without micro or macrovascular vascular complications at baseline. Only 20 people had a HbA1c consistently ≤37 mmol/mol (5.7%) who were free of diabetes vascular complications and of diabetes medication.Conclusions: The definition of 'diabetes in remission' remains unclear most especially regarding the inclusion of baseline prevalent or incident macro or microvascular disease, the durability of potential remission is poor, and the likelihood of cure is remote. Globally, amphibians are declining more rapidly than any other vertebrate group. A general shortage of funding for the support of focused scientific studies led us to investigate local and traditional ecological knowledge as an alternative data source for amphibian conservation. In this context, we undertook a questionnaire-based interview survey with forest-dwelling indigenous and non-indigenous communities across the Anamalai Hills, within the southern Western Ghats of India, to gather ecological knowledge on three cryptic and threatened frog species. Our results suggest that local communities possess ecological knowledge of frogs and that the magnitude of this knowledge is influenced by gender, community type, education, and age. Accuracy of local knowledge was primarily influenced by the morphological distinctiveness of the focal species, but cultural association and utilisation were also important factors especially for the enigmatic purple frog Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis, which has uses in medicine and amulets. Acute kidney injury (AKI) necessitating renal replacement therapy adversely affects outcomes after thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA) repair. The effects of earlier stages of AKI are less known. We hypothesized that earlier stages of AKI would reduce early survival after TAAA repair. We analyzed prospectively collected data from 1,056 consecutive TAAA repairs from our institution (2006 to 2016). We excluded patients less than 18 years of age, those with preexisting renal disease, and three patients who died intraoperatively, resulting in 873 patients. The Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes criteria grouped patients into three AKI stages; stage 3 necessitated initiation of renal replacement therapy. Multivariable modeling identified operative mortality predictors. Kaplan-Meier analysis assessed 1-year survival. Of 873 patients, 642 (73.5%) had no AKI and 231 (26.5%) had postoperative AKI (mild/stage 1, n = 92 [10.5%]; moderate/stage 2, n = 44 [5%]; severe/stage 3, n = 95 [10.9%]). Operative death occurred in 65 patients (7.4%): 14 (2.2%) with no AKI, 5 (5.4%) with mild AKI (p = 0.07 versus no AKI), 8 (18.2%) with moderate AKI (p = 0.02 versus mild), and 38 (40%) with severe AKI (p = 0.01 versus moderate). In multivariable analysis, moderate AKI independently predicted death (relative risk ratio: 9.4, 95% confidence interval: 3.4 to 25.9). Kaplan-Meier 1-year survival was 91.1% ± 1.2% for no AKI, 84.6% ± 3.9% for mild AKI (p = 0.07 versus no AKI), 67.4% ± 7.6% for moderate AKI (p = 0.01 versus mild), and 46.6% ± 5.3% for severe AKI (p = 0.02 versus moderate; p < 0.0001 across all groups). Moderate/stage 2 AKI reduced early survival after TAAA repair. Prevention, earlier detection, and optimal medical management of AKI may improve survival. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The collection of marine taxa for the aquarium trade continues to demand live animals be extracted from reefs, but in doing so, offers economic benefits for local communities. To improve our understanding of the status of marine aquariumtrade in India, information on harvested species and their volume was gathered at the major collection hubs (Tuticorin, Kilakarai and Mandapam) in the Gulf of Mannar region, and compared to the export data. During one year, 87 species of fish (51% belonging to the family Pomacentridae) and 21 species of invertebrates were harvested for the trade. The conservation status of exploited species revealed that nearly 50% (n=43) have not been assessed for their extinction risk by the IUCN, while of the 44 species assessed, 41 were Least Concern (LC), and one each was in the Data Deficient (DD), Near Threatened (NT) and Endangered (EN) categories. While many fish were collected, only a few were exported from India. The sea anemones were the major export as they were of a higher value in the international markets, largely attributed to their color patterns. Price discrepancies within the trade value of marine fishes and invertebrates used for the aquarium trade indicated that price increased approximately 200% at each transition in the value chain (collectors to wholesalers, wholesalers to retailers). Management strategies and conservation plans for India's marine ornamental taxa subjected to exploitation are provided so as to ensure long-term sustainability of the coral reef ecosystems, as well as the livelihood that are dependent on them.
