Isotopes at the limits of nuclear existence are of great interest for their critical role in nuclear astrophysical reactions and their exotic structure. Experimentally, exotic nuclides are challenging to address due to their low production cross-sections, overwhelming amounts of contamination, and lifetimes of typically less than a second. To this end, a Multiple-Reflection Time-of-Flight mass spectrometer at the TITAN-TRIUMF facility was built to determine atomic masses. This device is the preferred tool to work with exotic nuclides due to its ability to resolve the species of interest from contamination and short measurement cycle times, enabling mass measurements of isotopes with millisecond half-lives. With a relative precision of the order 10−7, we demonstrate why the TITAN MR-TOF MS is the tool of choice for precision mass surveys for nuclear structure and astrophysics. The capabilities of the device are showcased in this work, including new mass measurements of short-lived tin isotopes (104–107Sn) approaching the proton dripline as well as 89Zr, 90Y, and 91Y. The SPES (Selective Production of Exotic Species) facility, currently under development at Legnaro National Laboratories of INFN, aims at the production of intense RIB (Radioactive Ion Beams) employing the Isotope Separation On-Line (ISOL) technique for interdisciplinary research. The radioactive isotopes of interest are produced by the interaction of a multi-foil uranium carbide target with a 40 MeV 200 μA proton beam generated by a cyclotron proton driver. The Target Ion Source (TIS) is the core of the SPES project, here the radioactive nuclei, mainly neutron-rich isotopes, are stopped, extracted, ionized, separated, accelerated and delivered to specific experimental areas. Due to efficiency reasons, the TIS unit needs to be replaced periodically during operation. In this highly radioactive environment, the employment of autonomous systems allows the manipulation, transport, and storage of the TIS unit without the need for human intervention. A dedicated remote handling infrastructure is therefore under development to fulfill the functional and safety requirement of the project. This contribution describes the layout of the SPES target area, where all the remote handling systems operate to grant the smooth operation of the facility avoiding personnel exposure to a high dose rate or contamination issues.

At the CERN-ISOLDE radioactive ion beam facility, thick targets are irradiated using a beam of 1.4-GeV protons. One of ISOLDE's key features is the large choice of ion source types and target materials available, enabling us to select the ideal combination for optimal intensity and purity of the isotopes requested by ISOLDE users. The ever-increasing demands in terms of isotope production yield, beam purity, and overall reliability of the employed systems are driving the continuous development efforts. Over the past few years, CERN has invested heavily in facilities and infrastructure that facilitate ongoing developments required for ISOLDE. A dedicated offline laboratory (Offline 2) has been recently equipped with high repetition rate nanosecond tunable lasers required for scheme development and developments of specialized laser ion source types such as VADLIS, LIST and PI-LIST. Moreover, it hosts a twin setup of the ISOLDE RFQ cooler and buncher (ISCOOL), which is envisaged to be used for studies of molecular beam creation and breakup, as well as the development of improved RFQ services and operational modes. For material development, particularly for nanostructured materials, the new nano laboratory has just been commissioned and will enable the production and development of nano actinide targets for ISOLDE. In this contribution we describe the infrastructure required for target and ion source developments, highlight recent efforts and experimental results on both target material development and ion source development, and provide an outlook on what to expect in the near future. The high-intensity proton beam of the TRIUMF 500 MeV cyclotron offers unique opportunities to produce rare isotopes by irradiating a variety of targets. In particular, the ISAC (Isotope Separation and ACceleration) facility provides the infrastructure to deliver customized rare ion beams for fundamental research in nuclear physics, astrophysics, material science, and nuclear medicine. A continuous effort is made to develop new radioactive ion beams (RIB) and improve their intensity or purity, properties that depend strongly on the type of target, operating conditions, the ion source, and beam transport efficiency. Yield data and theoretical production rates based on FLUKA and G eant 4 simulations are collected in the TRIUMF Isotope Database , providing a valuable resource for RIB development and experiment planning. This paper introduces the newly upgraded TRIUMF Isotope Database and presents examples on how its resources can be used to plan experiments and understand the origin of certain RIB. We report on the development, characterization, and first application of a specialized resonance ionization laser ion source for high-resolution spectroscopy applications below usual hot cavity Doppler broadening limitations, for on-line experiments at CERN-ISOLDE. The new PI-LIST ion source comprises perpendicular laser/atom beam interaction in a radio-frequency quadrupole unit directly downstream the hot atomizer cavity. A spectral linewidth of 200–300 MHz is demonstrated, with the potential to achieve below 100 MHz. Compared to standard in-source laser ionization, the efficiency reduction factor ranges from a few 100 to above 1000. The implementation of this ion source concept at thick target radioactive ion beam facilities will greatly enhance capabilities for nuclear structure investigations without demanding dedicated experimental beam line setups, and will facilitate the delivery of isomer-pure beams to experimental stations. The under-construction FRIB-EDM 3 -instrument was designed to study polar radioactive molecules (such as RaF) in transparent cryogenic solids by laser spectroscopy. The instrument is divided into a frontend- and a backend section. The frontend accepts an aqueous sample from isotope harvesting and provides a mass-separated molecular ion beam in an ultra-high vacuum environment. In the backend, the ions are guided into alkali-metal vapor and the resulting neutrals are co-deposited in a solid argon matrix to perform laser spectroscopy. This work addresses the frontend of the instrument. The efficient ionization of harvested radioisotopes from aqueous samples is achieved with a spray-ionization method. Subsequently, the molecular ion beam is analyzed by mass-to-charge ratio by a quadrupole mass filter. To verify the feasibility of the approach, numerical simulations with the COMSOL and SIMION packages have been conducted. While the former was applied to study transport in ion funnels, the latter was used to investigate ion beam transmission through the lower pressure sections. The employment of a suitable radioactive decay spectroscopy setup is essential for the operation of radioactive ion beam (RIB) facilities. CERN-ISOLDE recently developed a new fast tape station (FTS) setup to replace its more than 40 years old predecessor. The new FTS is equipped with several β -detectors, a HPGe-detector, provisions for an α -detector, and constitutes a significant improvement in terms of transport times and detector noise characteristics. Since 2021 it is routinely used as the primary asset for yield determination and quality control of produced RIBs at ISOLDE. Objective. Beams of stable ions have been a well-established tool for radiotherapy for many decades. In the case of ion beam therapy with stable 12C ions, the positron emitters 10,11C are produced via projectile and target fragmentation, and their decays enable visualization of the beam via positron emission tomography (PET). However, the PET activity peak matches the Bragg peak only roughly and PET counting statistics is low. These issues can be mitigated by using a short-lived positron emitter as a therapeutic beam. Approach. An experiment studying the precision of the measurement of ranges of positron-emitting carbon isotopes by means of PET has been performed at the FRS fragment-separator facility of GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH, Germany. The PET scanner used in the experiment is a dual-panel version of a Siemens Biograph mCT PET scanner. Main results. High-quality in-beam PET images and activity distributions have been measured from the in-flight produced positron emitting isotopes 11C and 10C implanted into homogeneous PMMA phantoms. Taking advantage of the high statistics obtained in this experiment, we investigated the time evolution of the uncertainty of the range determined by means of PET during the course of irradiation, and show that the uncertainty improves with the inverse square root of the number of PET counts. The uncertainty is thus fully determined by the PET counting statistics. During the delivery of 1.6 × 107 ions in 4 spills for a total duration of 19.2 s, the PET activity range uncertainty for 10C, 11C and 12C is 0.04 mm, 0.7 mm and 1.3 mm, respectively. The gain in precision related to the PET counting statistics is thus much larger when going from 11C to 10C than when going from 12C to 11C. The much better precision for 10C is due to its much shorter half-life, which, contrary to the case of 11C, also enables to include the in-spill data in the image formation. Significance. Our results can be used to estimate the contribution from PET counting statistics to the precision of range determination in a particular carbon therapy situation, taking into account the irradiation scenario, the required dose and the PET scanner characteristics. The production of transuranium isotopes has been demonstrated at the Isotope Separation and ACceleration (ISAC) facility. In particular a laser-ionized 239Pu beam, extracted from a uranium carbide target, was investigated. The experimental work was complemented by G eant 4 simulations, modelling the impact of secondary particles on the creation of transuranium isotopes through inelastic nuclear reactions. Theoretical production cross sections were derived and compared to experimental results, leading to a discussion on boundary conditions for the release of neptunium and plutonium from ISAC uranium carbide targets. The Superallowed Transition Beta-Neutrino Decay Ion Coincidence Trap (St. Benedict) is currently under construction at the University of Notre Dame Nuclear Science Laboratory. It is designed to measure the beta-neutrino angular correlation parameter in superallowed mixed beta-decay transitions between mirror nuclei in order to extract the Fermi-to-Gamow Teller mixing ratio and test theoretical corrections entering in the determination of the V u d element of the Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa quark mixing matrix. St. Benedict includes a large volume gas catcher to thermalize the radioactive ion beam from TwinSol , a differentially-pumped extraction system, a radiofrequency quadrupole ion cooler and buncher, and a Paul trap for the observation and detection of the β decay products. The TULIP project aims to produce radioactive ion beams of short-lived neutron-deficient isotopes by using fusion-evaporation reactions in an optimized Target Ion Source System (TISS). The first step consisted of the design of a TISS to produce rubidium isotopes. It was tested with a primary beam of 22Ne@4.5 MeV/A irradiating a natural Ni target at the SPIRAL1/GANIL facility in March 2022. Rates of 76 , 78 Rb were measured as well as an exceptionally short atom-to-ion transformation time for an ISOL system, of the order of 200 μ s. The second step of the project aims at producing neutron-deficient short-lived metallic isotopes in the region of 100Sn. A "cold" prototype has been realized to study the electron impact ionization in the TISS cavity and a "hot" version is under construction to prepare an on-line experiment expected in the near future. Particle therapy relies on the advantageous dose deposition which permits to highly conform the dose to the target and better spare the surrounding healthy tissues and organs at risk with respect to conventional radiotherapy. In the case of treatments with heavier ions (like carbon ions already clinically used), another advantage is the enhanced radiobiological effectiveness due to high linear energy transfer radiation. These particle therapy advantages are unfortunately not thoroughly exploited due to particle range uncertainties. The possibility to monitor the compliance between the ongoing and prescribed dose distribution is a crucial step toward new optimizations in treatment planning and adaptive therapy. The Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is an established quantitative 3D imaging technique for particle treatment verification and, among the isotopes used for PET imaging, the 11C has gained more attention from the scientific and clinical communities for its application as new radioactive projectile for particle therapy. This is an interesting option clinically because of an enhanced imaging potential, without dosimetry drawbacks; technically, because the stable isotope 12C is successfully already in use in clinics. The MEDICIS-Promed network led an initiative to study the possible technical solutions for the implementation of 11C radioisotopes in an accelerator-based particle therapy center. We present here the result of this study, consisting in a Technical Design Report for a 11C Treatment Facility. The clinical usefulness is reviewed based on existing experimental data, complemented by Monte Carlo simulations using the FLUKA code. The technical analysis starts from reviewing the layout and results of the facilities which produced 11C beams in the past, for testing purposes. It then focuses on the elaboration of the feasible upgrades of an existing 12C particle therapy center, to accommodate the production of 11C beams for therapy. The analysis covers the options to produce the 11C atoms in sufficient amounts (as required for therapy), to ionize them as required by the existing accelerator layouts, to accelerate and transport them to the irradiation rooms. The results of the analysis and the identified challenges define the possible implementation scenario and timeline.

A very intense γ beam of the Gamma Factory facility proposed at CERN can be used to generate radioactive ion beams (RIBs) with high production yields and study the structure of exotic neutron‐rich nuclei. The radioactive nuclides are generated via photo‐fission in several actinide targets and thermalized in high‐purity cryogenic helium, filling a gas cell which is enclosing the targets. Electric fields are used to extract heavy ions and form RIBs which can be send to various selection and measurement stations. Estimates for the production and extraction yields of exotic neutron‐rich nuclei with such a setup are provided. A study of the impact of space charge, build‐up inside the gas cell, on the extraction properties is presented and it is demonstrated that the beam needs to be chopped for achieving optimal extraction yields. The odd-odd nucleus 30Na is studied via a one-proton, one-proton-one-neutron and one-neutron removal reaction using an intermediate-energy 31Mg, 32Mg and 31Na radioactive ion beam, respectively. Combining high-resolution γ-ray spectroscopy with the selectivity of the three reaction mechanisms, we are able to distinguish multiple particle-hole configurations. Negative-parity states in 30Na are observed for the first time, providing an important measure of the excitation of the 1p1h/3p3h configuration and hence the sd-pf shell gap. The extracted band structures and level energies serve as invaluable input for the theoretical refinement of the effective interactions used in this region.

This idea has always been hampered by the low intensity of the secondary beams, produced by fragmentation of the primary, stable beams. With the intensity upgrade of the SIS-18 synchrotron and the isotopic separation with the fragment separator FRS in the FAIR-phase-0 in Darmstadt, it is now possible to reach radioactive ion beams with sufficient intensity to treat a tumor in small animals. This was the motivation of the BARB (Biomedical Applications of Radioactive ion Beams) experiment that is ongoing at GSI in Darmstadt. This paper will present the plans and instruments developed by the BARB collaboration for testing the use of radioactive beams in cancer therapy.

Heavy ion therapy can deliver high doses with high precision. However, image guidance is needed to reduce range uncertainty. Radioactive ions are potentially ideal projectiles for radiotherapy because their decay can be used to visualize the beam. Positron-emitting ions that can be visualized with PET imaging were already studied for therapy application during the pilot therapy project at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, and later within the EULIMA EU project, the GSI therapy trial in Germany, MEDICIS at CERN, and at HIMAC in Japan. The results show that radioactive ion beams provide a large improvement in image quality and signal-to-noise ratio compared to stable ions. The main hindrance toward a clinical use of radioactive ions is their challenging production and the low intensities of the beams. New research projects are ongoing in Europe and Japan to assess the advantages of radioactive ion beams for therapy, to develop new detectors, and to build sources of radioactive ions for medical synchrotrons.

The target sits at the core of each facility for the production of radioactive ion beams for nuclear physics research. The materials which constitutes it must withstand extremes conditions of temperature and pressure, being bombarded by intense beams of light particles for several days. This is particularly important in high-power facilities such as SPES (Selective Production of Exotic Species) in which the targets are subjected to strong thermal gradients. Accurate choice and design of materials are therefore crucial. On recent years, several studies have been carried out in the framework of the SPES target research and development.
