Summary: Seventy-five years after the infamous broadcast, does War of the Worlds still matter? This book answers with a resounding yes! Contributors revisit the broadcast event in order to reconsider its place as a milestone in media history, and to explore its role as a formative event for understanding citizens' media use in times of crisis. Uniquely focused on the continuities between radio's «new» media moment and our contemporary era of social media, the collection takes War of the Worlds as a starting point for investigating key issues in twenty-first-century communication, including: the problem of misrepresentation in mediated communication; the importance of social context for interpreting communication; and the dynamic role of listeners, viewers and users in talking back to media producers and institutions. By examining the «crisis» moment of the original broadcast in its international, academic, technological, industrial, and historical context, as well as the role of contemporary new media in ongoing «crisis» events, this volume demonstrates the broad, historical link between new media and crisis over the course of a century.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has transformed journalistic practices and media roles in France and Germany. Analysis: As part of the Journalistic Role Performanc Project (JRP), 9,438 articl s published in France and Germany in 2020 were analyzed to determine trends in journalistic sources and the presence of six professional roles (watchdog, loyal facilitator, interventionist disseminator, service, infotainment, and civic) in n ws coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusions and implications: Professional roles in French and German media production ar similar despit the countries having distinct media systems. However, notable differences exist in terms of journalistic practices. German media are characterized by the use of sources to justify institutional decisions. A focus on political consensus in the United States in the early 1950s has created a false sense of a period of national unity and of the press in that period as a trusted institution. This article uses listener hate mail to radio reporters during a divisive moment—President Harry Truman's removal of General Douglas MacArthur from his command in the Korean War in April 1951—to identify a politically rancorous discourse, aimed at the press. This period of high emotion for Americans provides a case study in audience members' sometimes hostile relationship with journalists and does so at an early moment in the creation of a truly mass national news audience. I analyze hundreds of unpublished, archival letters, from a time when public opinion polling was relatively new and still problematic, to rethink what our baseline measurement is for media trust and better contextualize claims about its trajectory. I find three tropes that are especially resonant in the present day and became more visible parts of the public discourse with the presidency of Donald Trump: anti-press attitudes, isolationism, and antisemitism. - Abstract
Por Elas e Para Elas is a radio program that addresses various issues related to women. The objective is to reflect on women's agendas, such as violence against women, representation, sexual rights, and much more, bringing discussions from a cultural, social, historical, legal and psychological point of view. We decided to give a special focus to domestic violence, in which we focused on presenting the problem of women who are sexually abused by their own husbands. Marital rape is a crime that occurs in a subtle way in the environment of marital relations, in which the woman's right is violated. Thus, in this first program, we seek to conceptualize what marital rape is, to highlight its severity, consequences and to show how this crime is seen by the legal sphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article is dedicated to Professor Vsevolod Nikolaevich Ruzhnikov, Doctor of Philology, whose name is associated with the very first scientific studies of the phenomenon of radio, radiotelegraphy and radiotelephony. The purpose of the author is to recall that Professor Ruzhnikov is the founder of the national scientific school of radio journalism: he comprehended and systematically presented (in the format of textbooks and monographs) the history of radio broadcasting and radio journalism, presented the genre palette of radio programs, studied the functions and principles of radio organizations. He is a co-organizer of the country’s first university department of radio broadcasting and television of the Faculty of Journalism of Moscow State University (now it is called the Department of Television and Radio Broadcasting). The contribution of Vsevolod Nikolaevich Ruzhnikov to editorial and publishing activities is significant; the features of his editing of scientific texts require a separate study. The author of the article, in the past a postgraduate student of the professor, and now the scientific editor of the annual Ruzhnikov Readings at Moscow State University, refers to unstudied materials that are not known to modern media students and young scientists, radio journalists. The facts of the biography of Professor Ruzhnikov reflect the personality of a teacher and a citizen - a bearer of high moral values. The article uses the methods of retrospection, observation and in-depth interviews.

The article draws on the concepts of "felt needs" and "politics of listening" widely used in community development and applies them more broadly to the humanitarian crisis suffered by internally displaced persons in Burkina Faso. It investigates the two-way communication stream between radio journalists and listeners drawing on feedback collected remotely from 153 representatives of internally displaced and host communities in Burkina Faso during COVID-19. It argues that while a voice must be given to marginalised communities, it must also be listened to and acted upon. Rather than radio journalism being a loudspeaker for top-down messaging, the study argues that alternative approaches should be adopted in conflict- and pandemic-affected areas. It finds that a balance is needed between the information that listeners feel they need in their new extreme circumstances and the information that radio journalists, drawing on their expertise, feel would be strategically empowering. SCIENTIFIC discoveries ,HUMAN beings ,ARTIFICIAL intelligence ,TWENTIETH century ,INFORMATION technology - Abstract
For a long time, scientific discoveries were made in separate fields, defined by easily identifiable characteristics. This is how the fan of subjects in which scientists rushed to get closed in order to properly emphasize the identity of their preoccupations become larger and larger. The abstruseness of these entities often led to the rejection of some new fields that were not, in the beginning, considered sciences. This quality was only associated with already known fields such as: philosophy, history, physics, mathematics, astronomy etc. For centuries, researchers' preoccupations which went beyond the known and recognized patterns were accepted with great difficulty and their disciples had to provide deep evidence that the new activities meet the criteria required by true science and are not subsumed by an existing "senior." From the same perspective, it was very difficult to persuade scientists to unite their efforts with those of their peers from other fields in order to light together some study paths that have not been approached before. Although this mentality still continues to exist in the third millennium, a breakthrough in the twentieth century occurred when, as a result of the huge leaps made by human beings in all fields, some approaches, that coagulate the intelligence and experience of scientists in as many different fields of study as possible, were strictly imposed. The appearance and development of information technology, which allowed the generation and functioning of artificial intelligence, could not have been possible without connecting all information the human being possesses and without a collaboration between all subjects. The article presents the results from a systematic observation of and interviews with journalists who produce local radio news program, BandNews FM, in Rio de Janeiro. The objective is to analyze how the gatewatching process is applied to selecting sources from WhatsApp, and to explore the specific nature of work carried out in radio journalism newsrooms. One of the main features of this broadcaster is the large number of public voices selected from the WhatsApp instant messaging application. The data shows popular voices selected for this paper which fit into a particular theme, it shows the collaborative curation with listeners, and it shows the organizational constraints of investigation, highlighted by journalists sitting behind a desk, absent from the stage of the events. Unlike other media vehicles, radio demands continuous updating and decentralization when selecting material to be broadcast. This study points out characteristics that are demanded of journalists who work in radio and the new, newsroom strategies of involving the public via social networking platforms. This paper presents a discussion of narrative podcasts based on the analysis of Radio Ambulante, a Spanish language radio show created in the United States in 2011. The research aims to demonstrate that the emergence of the narrative podcast is strongly linked to the tradition of National Public Radio (NPR), the American public radio network founded in 1970. The article presents a brief history and examples of NPR radio shows that became fundamental in the development of the podcast’s journalistic tradition. In addition, it highlights the Radio Ambulante project as one of the most representative examples of this tradition in a foreign language. In this essay, two episodes of this podcast are analyzed: “Las Hijas de Maria Señorina” and “Mais Médicos”, productions of 2018 totally or partially dedicated to Brazil that had their audio transcribed in Portuguese. The significance of radio as a provider of essential news and information in conflict-affected and fragile countries cannot be underestimated nor can its role in contributing to shifts in critical consciousness, changes in behaviour, and raising awareness amongst marginalised groups. This is particularly the case regarding the influence of radio on women's empowerment. In Niger, women suffer from widespread gender inequality with a 75% child marriage rate, low literacy rates, polygamy and gender-based violence. The most important source of information women have is radio. This article illustrates radio's impact on women's rights and empowerment in the world's poorest country. It draws on extensive fieldwork conducted in 2018–19 (workshops, semi-structured interviews and focus groups) and in-depth content analyses of women-related radio output broadcast by Studio Kalangou, a radio studio in Niger, set up in 2016 by the Swiss-based media development agency, Fondation Hirondelle. The article demonstrates how increasing and developing the targeting of radio programmes to include more women-related themes and improving the content will contribute to empowering women politically, economically and within society. LIVE radio programs ,RADIO journalism ,RADIO programming - Abstract
This article analyzes the text of radio journalism built live on the CBN programming in Rio de Janeiro on the night of May 17, after the announcement of JBS audio involving President Michel Temer. The purpose is to conduct a study on the selection and distribution of sources throughout the programming and how the information was constructed in journalism of a substantive nature. The hypothesis is that textual and thematic language, in the case of live radio, does not follow a pattern such as the inverted pyramid, standing or as lying in Web journalism, but in a spiral format changing intensity according to the input of new information. Thus, the possibility of plurality and diversity of voices can happen throughout the programming, without a linear pattern of news construction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This history of radio news reporting recounts and assesses the contributions of radio toward keeping America informed since the 1920s. It identifies distinct periods and milestones in broadcast journalism and includes a biographical dictionary of important figures who brought news to the airwaves.Americans were dependent on radio for cheap entertainment during the Great Depression and for critical information during the Second World War, when no other medium could approach its speed and accessibility. Radio's diminished influence in the age of television beginning in the 1950s is studied, as the aural medium shifted from being at the core of many families'activities to more specialized applications, reaching narrowly defined listener bases. Many people turned elsewhere for the news. (And now even TV is challenged by yet newer media.) The introduction of technological marvels throughout the past hundred years has significantly altered what Americans hear and how, when, and where they hear it.

In this investigation we seek to understand the changes experienced by the informative radio in Portugal in the 1960s and 1970s, based on the journalistic project carried out by the Rádio Clube Português (RCP). The creation of the RCP News Service, in 1960, under the leadership of Luís Filipe Costa, and at the initiative of the station's top management, is the immediate motive that triggers the investigation, but it necessarily calls for broader views and questioning perspectives. The RCP project is framed in the Estado Novo regime of Oliveira Salazar and Marcello Caetano, for which media censorship was a way of life and a guarantee of survival. The journalistic experience of the Botelho Moniz station is seen through the prism of the transformations experienced by the journalistic field in this period, particularly visible in the press sector. From the point of view of the radio scene at the time, we place the RCP project within the “new radio” which, in the 1960s and, in particular, at the turn of the 1970s, brought new rhythms and new programs, in a language more informal and closer to the listener. Focusing on the journalistic project of the RCP, we see how organizational, editorial, style and language changes converge to it, especially in comparison with the reality of Emissora Nacional, lead us to conclude that we are facing the first modern experience of radio journalism in Portugal. From an epistemological point of view, we look at the Rádio Clube Português project, through the prism of its news production, and listen to it through the testimonies of professionals at the time, the press of the time and some written archival documentation. Nevertheless, our objective, from the beginning, was to mobilize, as much as possible, the sound materials kept in archives. The obstacles encountered led us to a path of reflection on the epistemology of the history of radio in its relationship with sound archives. The silent, fragmentary and volatile character of the audible traces, being a block to the investigation of radio in its sound specificity, is still relevant and necessary. The constitution and maturation of radio history depend, in our view, on the existence of sound archives that explain it from its own acoustic material. The sound nature of the medium requires that its study not be accommodated to written documentation and oral testimonies that, although essential, sometimes the only existing resources, are just one of the facets that help to build the radio's memory., Esta tese foi desenvolvida com financiamento da Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) através da concessão de uma bolsa de doutoramento (PD/BD/128176/2016) no âmbito do QREN – POPH – Tipologia 4.1 – Formação Avançada, comparticipado pelo Fundo Social Europeu e por fundos nacionais do MCTES.

Finalment, recorrem a l'eina METOOL perquè ens ajude a etiquetar, analitzar i obtindre resultats ja siga " por expresiones, por corpus o por categorías" (Carrió-Pastor, 2020, p. 266)., [EN] Language is the foundation of human communication, and we use it for a variety of purposes. This brief reflection serves to introduce the topic of this research, which is specifically related to the use of language. In this thesis, we will conduct a comparative analysis of the use of rhetoric in radio news from three countries: Spain, Peru, and the United States. For a long time, it has been said that rhetoric plays a fundamental role within the language of the media and this conception has been confirmed by the findings found in our thesis. We are aware that rhetoric does not work alone, but together, as it embraces methods such as metadiscourse and pragmatics. For example, authors such as Dafouz Milne (2000), raises the need to frame metadiscourse in a theoretical framework more in line with its characteristics and needs as rhetoric. In this thesis, we discuss metadiscourse because, in the words of Fairclough (1992), it serves as a tool used in a text when "the speaker is situated above or outside her own discourse, and is in a position to control and manipulate it" (p. 122). It is precisely in the media that one can observe the enormous influence and power they have over our societies. Within this context, throughout this thesis it will be shown how radio journalists build their discourse, in their respective languages -whether Spanish or English- when delivering the news. And the effects that they intend to produce on listeners will be explained in Chapter 7. This thesis seeks to establish parallels and discrepancies between the use of metadiscursive strategies found in radio discourse in Spain, Peru, and the United States on the topics of politics and current events. In order to achieve this, we decided to work with the taxonomy proposed by Hyland in 2005, which is classified into two categories, textual and interpersonal. This decision stems from the fact that this model allows us to observe the way news presenters organize their discourse and the relationship they establish with their listeners through them. In addition, Hyland's classification is frequently used in research and is respected among academics as a valid model. The results gathered allow us to understand the forms of persuasion that are given in Spanish and English in relation to the type of discourse that we chose to analyze. Due to the nature of the research, we offer quantitative and qualitative results, which from our point of view, leads to a more complete understanding. Finally, we relied on the METOOL analysis tool to help us label, analyze and obtain results either "por expresiones, por corpus o por categorías" (Carrió-Pastor, 2020, p. 266).

Every text we send, Netflix show we binge, football game we watch on cable programming, or radio news report we listen to is monitored, either directly or indirectly, by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). During the twentieth century, the FCC started to relax its regulatory standards, and this deregulatory trend has continued into the twenty-first century. Currently, U.S. media is owned by only a handful of companies, controlling the majority of what Americans read, watch, or listen to. This Note explores the regulatory role of the FCC, its deregulatory trend, and the ramifications of that deregulation. Lastly, this Note discusses alternatives to the current FCC regulatory method and recommends a regulatory solution to discourage continued media consolidation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

What is prisoners'radio? Who is involved in «creating» these types of programs and what influence do they have on discourses of law and order? Internationally, radio that operates for, or by, prisoners exists almost exclusively within the community radio context. Little has been documented about the genre so far. Raising the Civil Dead seeks to address this lack of information. It examines prisoners'radio as citizens'media, connecting directly to notions of civic responsibility. It focuses on the ways in which people produce media and how these activities transform those individuals. The research is the result of four in-depth case studies conducted in two countries, complemented by an international inventory of prisoners'radio programs and stations.

This article is principally concerned with how and why these 2 types of radio news developed. It discusses the culture, ethos and practices of the 2 services and, in particular, if and how each was influenced by the other. Much of the article is concerned about how the new commercial stations developed practices and styles that were consciously different from, and in some cases in direct opposition to, those at the BBC, both nationally and locally. The article argues that it was the BBC which adopted and integrated commercial radio's style and practices, rather than, as is often supposed, the other way around. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
