We present the results of our study of the relationship between FR0 radio galaxies and GPS sources. Quasi-simultaneous radio spectra of 34 FR0s were obtained at 2.25-22.3 GHz with the radio telescope RATAN-600 in 2020-2021 during 2-6 epochs. Most FR0s have flat radio spectra, but we found many spectra with a peaked shape. Due to this fact and the compact nature of FR0s, we suggest their possible relationship with CSS/GPS radio sources. We analyzed broadband radio spectra of the 34 FR0s using the RATAN-600 measurements and available literature data. There are 14 FR0 objects which can be CSS/GPS radio source candidates. Most FR0s have broader radio spectra than those of genuine GPS sources, with FWHM > 2 like in blazars. Most spectral indices at the frequencies below and above the peak do not correspond to the values typical of canonical GPS sources. We classified 3 FR0s as low-power GPS sources according to the canonical criteria. The key issue is the variability properties of FR0s. Some FR0s demonstrate a variability level of up to 25 % on a time scale of one year according to the RATAN-600 measurements. The flare phenomena in FR0 objects can imply a relationship between them and blazars.

Less than $200$ radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) are known above redshift $4$. Around $40$ of them have been observed at milliarcsecond (mas) scale resolution with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) technique. Some of them are unresolved, compact, relativistically beamed objects, blazars with jets pointing at small angles to the observer's line of sight. But there are also objects with no sign of relativistic beaming possibly having larger jet inclination angles. In a couple of cases, X-ray observations indicate the presence of relativistic beaming in contrary to the VLBI measurements made with the European VLBI Network (EVN). J1420$+$1205 is a prominent example, where our $30-100$ mas-scale enhanced Multi Element Remotely Linked Interferometer Network (e-MERLIN) radio observations revealed a rich structure reminiscent of a small radio galaxy. According to radiative models, radio galaxies are predicted to produce gamma-rays from the earliest stages of their evolution onwards. The study of the high-energy emission from young radio sources is crucial for providing information on the most energetic processes associated with these sources, the actual region responsible for this emission, as well as the structure of the newly born radio jets. Despite systematic searches for young radio sources at gamma-ray energies, only a handful of detections have been reported so far. Taking advantage of more than 11 years of Fermi-LAT data, we investigate the gamma-ray emission of 162 young radio sources (103 galaxies and 59 quasars), the largest sample of young radio sources used so far for a gamma-ray study. We analysed the Fermi-LAT data of each source separately to search for a significant detection. In addition, we performed the first stacking analysis of this class of sources in order to investigate the gamma-ray emission of the young radio sources that are undetected at high energies. Over recent years, there has been a deluge of data concerning changes with cosmic epoch of essentially all classes of extragalactic object. Evidence for strong evolutionary changes with cosmic epoch was first found in the 1950s and 1960s as a result of surveys of extragalactic radio sources and quasars. The key evidence was the excess of faint sources found in radio source and quasar surveys, as compared with the expectations of all uniform world models. The inference was that there were many more of these classes of objects at early cosmic epochs as compared with their number at the present epoch. During the 1980s, as the first deep counts of galaxies became available, it was discovered that there is a large excess of blue galaxies at faint apparent magnitudes. These studies culminated in the remarkable observations of the Hubble Deep Field by the Hubble Space Telescope, which will be discussed in some detail in Chap. 18.

The study of jet-inflated X-ray cavities provides a powerful insight into the energetics of atmospheres of early-type galaxies and the AGN feedback phenomenon. Properly estimating their total extent is, however, non-trivial, prone to biases and nearly impossible for poor-quality data. For these reasons, we have decided to harness the power of machine learning to tackle this problem. Using artificially generated images, we have trained a convolutional neural network to produce pixel-wise predictions capturing both the position and extent of detected X-ray cavities. Furthermore, we present how the network performs on real Chandra images of early-type galaxies.

We present a new study of the 1.7 Mpc KAT-7-discovered giant radio galaxy, J0133$-$1302, which was carried out using GMRT data at 323 and 608 MHz. This source is located at RA $01^h33^m13^s$ and Dec $-13^{\circ}03^\prime00^{\prime\prime}$ and has a photometric redshift of $\sim$0.3. We discovered unusual morphological properties of the source which include lobes that are exceptionally asymmetric, where the upper lobe is much further from the core when compared to the lower lobe, and a complex structure of the upper lobe. This complex structure of the upper lobe hints at the presence of another source, in close proximity to the edge of the lobe, which resembles a bent-double, or distorted bent tail (DBT) radio galaxy. Both the upper lobe and the lower lobe have a steep spectrum, and the synchrotron age of the lower lobe should be less than about 44 Myr. The core has an inverted spectrum, and our results suggest that the parent galaxy in J0133$-$1302 is starting a new jet activity. Our spectral analysis indicates that this source could be a GigaHertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) radio galaxy., 13 pages, 15 figures. Exploring their high-energy emission is crucial for providing information on the most energetic processes, the origin and the structure of the newly born radio jets. Taking advantage of more than 11 yr of Fermi-LAT data, we investigate the gamma-ray emission of 162 young radio sources (103 galaxies and 59 quasars), the largest sample of young radio sources used so far for such a gamma-ray study. We separately analyse each source and perform the first stacking analysis of this class of sources to investigate the gamma-ray emission of the undetected sources. We detect significant gamma-ray emission from 11 young radio sources, 4 galaxies, and 7 quasars, including the discovery of significant gamma-ray emission from the compact radio galaxy PKS 1007+142 (z = 0.213). The cumulative signal of below-threshold young radio sources is not significantly detected. However, it is about one order of magnitude lower than those derived from the individual sources, providing stringent upper limits on the gamma-ray emission from young radio galaxies (Fγ < 4.6 × 10−11 ph cm−2 s−1) and quasars (Fγ < 10.1 × 10−11 ph cm−2 s−1), and enabling a comparison with the models proposed. With this analysis of more than a decade of Fermi-LAT observations, we can conclude that while individual young radio sources can be bright gamma-ray emitters, the collective gamma-ray emission of this class of sources is not bright enough to be detected by Fermi-LAT.

We report the high-resolution radio observations of eight Fanaroff-Riley type 0 radio galaxies (FR 0s), selected from the published FR 0 sample. These observations were carried out with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) and European VLBI Network (EVN) at frequencies of 5 and 8 GHz with a highest resolution of 0.6 mas. All eight sources show compact structures on projected physical sizes of 0.3-10 parsec. Six sources show a two-sided structure and two sources show a one-sided jet structure. J1025+1022 shows an X-shaped jet structure, which could result from a reorientation of the jet axis due to a restart of the central engine or a projection of a highly curved inner jet, but more studies are needed to examine these scenarios. Proper motions for 22 jet components of the eight sources are determined to be between -0.08 c and 0.51 c. Although most of the sources exhibit flat spectra, other observed characteristics, such as, low-amplitude flux density variations, low jet proper motion speeds, and symmetric two-sided jet structures, tend to support that the pc-scale FR 0 jets are mildly relativistic with lower bulk Lorentz factors and larger viewing angles., Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS
