The importance of waste energy is increasing with increasing emphasis on carbon neutrality. Solid recovered fuels (SRFs) are manufactured to recycle waste into fuel form and can replace fossil fuels by recovering the heat generated by using them. This study calculated the manufacturing and energy recovery efficiency of SRF facilities. The manufacturing efficiency was calculated as the amount of SRFs manufactured compared to the amount of input waste. The energy recovery efficiency was calculated using the R1 method, which is applied to incineration heat energy recovery facilities. The manufacturing efficiency was 69.5%, which varies depending on the combustible material content of input waste. The energy recovery efficiency was 85.4%, which satisfied Korean energy recovery efficiency facility standards. The purpose of this article is to evaluate the possible impact of an indirect policy measure implemented in a Norwegian biotech cluster aiming to enhance collaborations between small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and higher education institutions. Through the adoption of a dynamic approach (i.e., two distinct periods: 2014–2017 and 2018–2021) and qualitative comparative analysis, this study demonstrates an increase in the frequency and intensity of collaboration between the two periods. It also highlights the combinations of conditions possibly enabling SMEs to benefit from the targeted indirect policy measure. The study shows how structural, ‘softer’ elements, such as age, size and trust toward the cluster administration, can overcome deficiencies in innovativeness and human capital and similarly can lead to more frequent and intense ties.

This article presents new empirical insights into European metropolitan regions, addressing a gap in the existing literature by examining the sectoral specialization and its impact on the productivity growth of metropolitan regions. The lack of evidence for European metropolitan regions contrasts with the empirical evidence for U.S. metropolitan regions, highlighting a significant research gap. By employing panel-regression analysis and leveraging unique regional data encompassing European metropolitan regions from 2000 to 2020, the authors unveil a multitude of significant findings. Key findings are that higher income countries (EU-15) tend to experience greater benefits from sectoral specialization in metropolitan regions compared to Eastern European regions (EU-NMS), suggesting that generalizing conclusions for EU-27 may be misleading. The study reveals a productivity gap resulting from sectoral specialization between metropolitan and non-metropolitan regions: Results suggest a higher concentration of specialized sectors in metropolitan regions. AbstractThis paper examines the spatiotemporal inequality in electricity consumption at the subnational level of Bangladesh using nighttime light (NTL) data. The NTL data, sourced from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) day/night band (DNB) for the period from 2013 to 2020, reveals persistent variability in electricity consumption among the districts. Notably, the gap between urban and non-urban areas has widened. While within district inequality (measured by NTL Gini) has declined over time, it remains high in several districts. Convergence analysis confirms that while lagging districts are showing a catching up effect, the sub-districts are diverging among themselves (in terms of mean NTL per capita). Interestingly, the rural sub-districts are converging among themselves despite urban sub-district divergence. The study also identifies regions with significant imbalance between NTL, population, and built-up area density values. Researchers used a transcendental phenomenological approach to explore the experiences of faculty members in a Faculty Research Hub design team at a Hispanic-Serving Institution. Through data analysis, several themes emerged: (1) Support and leadership, (2) Commitment to improvement, (3) Individual motivation, (4) Structure and collaborative nature of the team, (5) Small team size with diverse expertise, and (6) Faculty learning and development. These themes align with the input, process, or outcome stages of Binkhorst et al.’s (2015) integrative descriptive framework for Teacher Design Teams (TDTs). The study suggests that Hispanic-Serving Institutions aspiring to become R1 institutions should consider implementing and evaluating Faculty Design Teams (FDTs) to enhance faculty research productivity and doctoral student success. AbstractThis study investigates the effect of urban-rural roads construction on inequality. As the main roads connecting urban and rural areas, the urban-rural roads have greatly influenced the economic growth and poverty alleviation in rural areas. We collect the data of urban-rural roads from 2003 to 2021 and matched with the income inequality and night light intensity data, we find that the impact of urban-rural roads construction on inequality between urban and rural areas will first increase and then rebound, showcasing an inverted U-shaped curve. Further analysis shows that the inverted U-shaped trend could be attributed to the economic growth gap between urban and rural areas. The results in this study provide evidence that a developing country such as China could enhance urban-rural roads construction to reduce inequality between urban and rural areas. Using loan-level data, this analysis considers the intersection of race, subprime home loans, and the current vacancy crisis in St. Louis, Missouri. Borrowers in Black areas in the north of St. Louis City and St. Louis County received subprime home loans at higher frequencies during the subprime boom period of 2003–2007 than those in White areas, with differences in balloon loans especially stark. Specifically, borrowers in Black neighborhoods received subprime loans more frequently than those with equal FICO scores in White neighborhoods. As a result of these differential loan terms, North City and inner ring "First Suburb" areas saw more foreclosure and borrower payment delinquency, which in turn were highly associated with home vacancy, controlling for other risk factors. However, foreclosure was no longer a significant predictor of home vacancy after controlling for demographic factors and FICO score, indicating that the unequal loan terms may have driven much of the increase in home vacancy in the St. Louis area since the Great Recession. Abstract This study investigated the earliest change of cerebral blood flow (CBF) and its relationship with β-amyloid (Aβ) burden in preclinical Alzheimer’s disease (AD) employing dual-phase 18F-florbetaben (FBB) PET. Seventy-one cognitively normal (NC) individuals were classified as Aβ negative (Aβ−NC) or positive (Aβ+NC) based on two different cutoff values: an SUVR of > 1.08 and a Centiloid scale of > 20. The PET scans were acquired in two phases: an early phase (0–10 min, eFBB) and a delayed phase (90–110 min, dFBB), which were averaged to generate single-frame images for each phase. Furthermore, an R1 parametric map was generated from the early phase data using a simplified reference tissue model. We conducted regional and voxel-based analyses to compare the eFBB, dFBB, and R1 images between the Aβ positive and negative groups. In addition, the correlations between the CBF proxy R1 and the dFBB SUVR were analyzed. The Aβ+NC group showed significantly higher dFBB SUVR in both the global cerebral cortex and target regions compared to the Aβ−NC group, while no significant differences were observed in eFBB SUVR between the two groups. Furthermore, the Aβ+NC group exhibited significantly higher R1 values, a proxy for cerebral perfusion, in both the global cerebral cortex and target regions compared to the Aβ−NC group. Significant positive correlations were observed between R1 and dFBB SUVR in both the global cerebral cortex and target regions, which remained significant after controlling for demographics and cognitive profiles, except for the medial temporal and occipital cortices. The findings reveal increased CBF in preclinical AD and a positive correlation between CBF and amyloid pathology. The positive correlation between R1 and amyloid burden may indicate a compensatory mechanism in the preclinical stage of Alzheimer’s disease, but to elucidate this hypothesis, further longitudinal observational studies are necessary.

Green innovation plays a pivotal role in fostering sustainable and robust economic growth. Hence, it is of great practical significance to accurately assess green innovation efficiency and analyze its evolving trends and discrepancies from a spatiotemporal dynamic perspective. This study analyzes the green innovation efficiency across 30 provinces in China from 2001 to 2019 using the Super-SBM model, Dagum Gini coefficient, Kernel density estimation, and convergence models. The results reveal a consistent enhancement in China's green innovation efficiency, yet substantial room for further improvement persists, standing at 0.679 in 2019. Both China as a whole and its four major regions exhibit a polarisation trend in green innovation efficiency, characterised by notable internal disparities, albeit displaying a declining pattern. Interregional divergence is the primary source of the overall disparity, followed by intraregional disparities and the intensity of transvariation. China's green innovation efficiency demonstrates sigma and beta convergence trends. The study also highlights how uneven regional development and resource allocation disparities lead to an imbalanced convergence of regional green innovation efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Patients undergoing macroscopically curative resection for distal cholangiocarcinoma (DCC) have high recurrence rates and poor prognoses. This study aimed to investigate the impact of surgical margin status on survival and recurrence after resection of DCC, specifically focusing on microscopic residual tumor (R1) and its relationship to local recurrence. Patients and Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of patients who had undergone pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) for DCC between 2005 and 2021. Surgical margin was classified as R0, R1cis (positive bile duct margin with carcinoma in situ), and R1inv (positive bile duct margin with an invasive subepithelial component and/or positive radial margin). Results: In total, 29 of 133 patients (21.8%) had R1cis and 23 (17.3%) R1inv. The 5-year overall survival (OS) for R0 (55.7%) did not differ significantly from that for R1cis/R1inv (47.4%/33.6%, respectively). The 5-year recurrence-free survival (RFS) for R0 was significantly longer than that for R1inv (50.1% vs. 17.4%, p = 0.003), whereas RFS did not differ significantly between those with R0 and R1cis. R1cis/R1inv status was not an independent predictor of OS and RFS in multivariate analysis. Cumulative incidence of isolated distant recurrence was significantly higher for R1cis/R1inv than for R0 (p = 0.0343/p = 0.0226, respectively), whereas surgical margin status was not significantly associated with rates of local or local plus distant recurrence. Conclusions: Surgical margin status does not significantly impact OS and RFS in patients undergoing PD for DCC following precise preoperative imaging evaluation. Purpose: This study aims to examine the price and income elasticities of short- and long-run industrial electricity demand in Brazil between 2003 and 2020. The research also examines the impacts of COVID-19 in Brazil's industrial electricity sector, including an analysis in states more and less industrialized. Design/methodology/approach: Dynamic adjustments models in panel data are used to present robust estimates and analyze the impact of different methodologies on reported elasticities. Findings: The short-run price elasticity is estimated at −0.448, while the long-run values are around −1.60. Regarding income elasticity, the value is 0.069 in the short-run and is concentrated in 0.25 in the long-run. The inelastic results of income show that the industrial demand for electric energy follows the trend of loss of competitiveness of the Brazilian industry in the past years. In addition, the price of natural gas, the level of employment, and, in specific cases, the level of imports also influence industrial electricity demand. Originality/value: The research is a pioneer in the investigation of the industrial behavior of electricity of the Brazilian industrial branch, using as control variables, the average temperature, and the level of rainfall, this one, so important for a country whose main source is hydroelectric. In addition, to the best of the authors' knowledge, it is the first study, which is prepared to analyze the effects of COVID-19 on electric consumption in the industrial sector, investigating these impacts, including in the states considered more and less industrialized. Prepulse inhibition (PPI) is a well-established phenomenon wherein a weak sensory stimulus attenuates the startle reflex triggered by a subsequent strong stimulus. Within the circuit, variations in target responses observed for PPI paradigms represent prepulse-induced excitability changes. However, little is known about the mechanism of PPI. Here, we focused on short-latency PPI of the trigeminal blink reflex R1 signal with an oligosynaptic reflex arc through the principal sensory trigeminal nucleus and the facial nucleus. As the facial nucleus is facilitatory to any input, R1 PPI is the phenomenon in the former nucleus. Considering that GABAergic modulation may be involved in PPI, this study investigated whether the PPI mechanism includes GABA-A equivalent inhibition, which peaks at approximately 30 ms in humans. In 12 healthy volunteers, the reflex was elicited by electrical stimulation of the supraorbital nerve, and recorded at the ipsilateral lower eyelid by accelerometer. Stimulus intensity was 1.5 times the R1 threshold for test stimulus and 0.9 times for the prepulse. The prepulse-test interval (PTI) was 5-150 ms. Results showed significant inhibition at 40-and 80-150-ms PTIs but not at 20-, 30-, 50-, 60-, and 70-ms PTIs, yielding two distinct inhibitions of different time scales. This corresponds well to the early and late components of inhibitory post synaptic potentials by GABA-A and GABA-B receptor activation. Thus, the data support the contribution of inhibitory post synaptic potentials elicited by the prepulse to the observed PPI. As inhibitory function-related diseases may impair the different inhibition components to varying degrees, methods deconvoluting each inhibitory component contribution are of clinical importance. Research collaboration is an important instrument for innovation and knowledge transfer. In this respect, barriers that prevent or impede research collaboration between research institutions and companies are of particular importance. In this paper, we elaborate on the importance of research collaboration barriers by conducting and analysing 77 expert interviews from ten German regions. We go beyond the existing literature by examining differences in the perception of different kinds of experts and by comparing different types of regions classified according to the presence of important actors, namely research institutions and large companies. Our results show that research collaboration barriers are perceived as very significant barriers to innovation across all region types. We find differences in the perception of research collaboration barriers between the experts. On the regional level, the presence of research institutions shifts the relevance from missing partners to other research collaboration barriers, while all research collaboration barriers are not perceived as significantly less important. This study explores the challenges and opportunities of collaboration between Algerian universities and industrial enterprises, emphasizing the influence of social and cognitive proximity on successful partnerships, irrespective of geographical proximity.

Background: A positive circumferential resection margin (CRM) after rectal cancer surgery, which can be the result of direct or indirect tumour involvement, has consistently been associated with increased local recurrence and poorer survival. However, little is known of the differential impact of the mode of tumour involvement on outcomes. Methods: 1460 consecutive patients undergoing rectal cancer resection between 2003 and 2018 were retrospectively assessed. Histopathology reports for patients with a positive CRM were reviewed to determine cases of direct (R1‐tumour) or indirect tumour involvement (R1‐other). Disease‐free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) were assessed by Kaplan–Meier analysis. The role of the mode of CRM positivity was examined by univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards models. Results: Eighty‐five patients had an R1 resection due to CRM involvement (5.8%). Of those, 69 were due to direct tumour involvement, while 16 were from indirect causes. Kaplan–Meier analysis revealed that R1‐other was associated with increased OS (hazard ratio 0.40, log‐rank P = 0.006) and DFS (P = 0.043). Multivariate regression confirmed that the mode of CRM positivity was an independent predictor of OS. More interestingly, the patterns of recurrence were different between the two groups, with R1‐tumour leading to significantly more local recurrence (P = 0.04). Conclusions: Our data strongly suggests that direct tumour involvement of the CRM confers worse prognosis after rectal cancer surgery. Importantly, differences in the site and frequency of recurrences make a case for better stratification of patients with a positive CRM to guide treatment decisions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Patent commercialisation in the age of knowledge economy shows unique features, such as involving more diverse participants, requiring a more rapid flow of innovation resources and a more inclusive innovation environment. Hence, it is necessary to consider the causal complexity of patent commercialisation from a macro-perspective. Based on the regional innovation ecosystem (RIE) theory, this paper uses qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) to explore the paths to realise patent commercialisation, with 31 provinces in China as samples. The findings pinpoint that the paths to realise patent commercialisation are different according to the enrichment or scarcity of elements in RIEs. Particularly, for RIEs with wholly enriched elements, it is crucial to avoid the loss of elements and retain competitiveness on patent commercialisation; for RIEs with partially enriched elements, it is crucial to supplement elements with scarcity; for RIEs with wholly scarce elements, the primary task is to cultivate its innovation ecosystem, instead of promoting patent commercialisation. Land protection not only supports vital ecosystem services but also poses important challenges for social equity. Three key concerns emerge from economic frameworks about land protection policies: potential lost local economic development, reinforcement of existing structural inequalities, and disparities in access to the benefits of protected land. This article reviews evidence for each concern and identifies research needs as well as potential improvements in policy that could better support equity goals. Pathways forward towards greater equity include specific mechanisms that can ensure local communities benefit from land protection, attention to issues of spatial impacts and timing, explicit prioritization of equity in land protection initiatives, and community-centred processes. Economists have and can continue to play a role in strengthening these dimensions of land protection policies.

Membrane molecules PD-L1 and PD-L2, ligands of T lymphocytes PD1 receptor, perform immunoregulatory functions. Their binding to the receptor leads to inhibition of proliferation, reduction of cytokine production, cytotoxic response, and apoptosis of T lymphocytes. The cells of many tumors, regardless of their histogenesis, express PD-L1 molecules, thus limiting the development of an anti-tumor immune response. Glioblastomas are highly malignant recurrent tumors of the central nervous system. The main sources of glioblastoma recurrence are resistant tumor cells initially present in gliomas with heterogeneous cellular composition, as well as resistant cells that are formed during therapy. Increasing the dose of cytostatic drugs or radiation during relapse therapy is not effective in glioblastomas. It has been shown for a number of tumors, including ovarian cancer and non-small cell lung cancer, that drugs preventing PD-L1/PD1 interaction are effective in the treatment of neoplasms resistant to chemo- and radiotherapy. Immunotherapy using drugs that inhibit the binding of PD-L molecules to their receptor is considered as a way to overcome the resistance of glioblastomas to therapy. The aim of this work was to assess the level of PD-L1 and PD-L2 gene expression in resistant glioblastoma cells lines A172, R1, T2 and T98G, which resumed proliferation after exposure to the maximum for each line, sublethal doses of cytostatic drugs (fotemustine and temozolomide), fractionated or single gamma irradiation. A172 line belongs to glioblastomas that are highly sensitive to these influences, T98G is a highly resistant cell line, while R1 and T2 lines occupy an intermediate position. In intact glioblastoma A172, R1, and T2 cells the level of PD-L1 and PD-L2 gene expression was equally high, while in T98G cells it was significantly lower. Exposure of A172 and R1 glioblastoma lines to cytostatic drugs or irradiation did not significantly change the level of PD-L1 and PD-L2 genes expression typical for intact cells. In T2 glioblastoma cells, and especially in T98G cells, a significant increase in expression of these genes was found, most pronounced for PD-L2 gene. This increase in expression may indicate an enhanced malignancy of resistant T2 and T98G cells. High expression of the genes responsible for the production of PD-L1 and PD-L2, which limit the cytotoxic response against tumor cells, is a prerequisite for the use of drugs targeted against PD-L1 and PD-L2 for the elimination of resistant cells in glioblastoma.

One of the modern methods of treating patients with primary and recurrent brain tumors is radiosurgical irradiation using Gamma Knife, which allows therapeutic doses to be delivered to tumors not exceeding 2.5 cm in diameter in 1–2 sessions. Tumor cells on the periphery of this tissue volume that receive lower radiation doses can resume proliferation and serve as a source of recurrence. The increase of radiation dose may cause necroses formation and a worsening prognosis. The properties of glioblastoma cells that survive and resume proliferation long after stereotactic irradiation are still poorly known. The aim of the work was to evaluate the expression of IL-6 and IL-8 by glioblastoma A172, R1, T2, and T98G cell lines that resumed proliferation after sublethal Gamma Knife irradiation. Cells were irradiated once at doses ranging from 6 to 16 Gy, and then cultured for 40 days. Cell number was counted weekly; lethal and sublethal irradiation doses for each glioblastoma cell line were determined. In cultures descendant from proliferation of single most resistant cells, the level of IL-6 and IL-8 secretion after 96 hours cultivation (ng/1000 cells) was determined by ELISA. The cells of all four glioblastoma lines secreted IL-6 and IL-8 into culture medium. The highest production of cytokines, never before demonstrated for glioblastomas, was discovered in R1 cells. Glioblastoma T2 also had high interleukin production levels. In contrast to these lines, glioblastoma A172 (highly sensitive to the action of cytostatic drugs and radiation) secreted IL-6 at 30 times lower level than R1 cells. Glioblastoma T98G (highly resistant to the action of cytostatic drugs and radiation) also exhibited low interleukins production level. R1, T2, and T98G glioblastoma cells that resumed proliferation after irradiation had increased secretion of IL-6 and, to a lesser extent, IL-8. The dependence of cytokine production increase on irradiation dose for these cells was not linear. In contrast, A172 cells reduced IL-6 and IL-8 secretion under irradiation. The multidirectional changes in IL-6 and IL-8 production by cells of different glioblastoma lines were long-term and persisted for more than a month. The presented results cast doubt on the possibility to use IL-6 and IL-8 production by glioblastoma cells as potential biomarkers for early diagnosis, therapy monitoring as well as prognostic markers of the disease course.

Research suggests that increasing collaboration in knowledge production is explained by rising complexity of knowledge. Yet, there is little long-run, systematic, empirical evidence on the relationship between complexity and collaboration. A new database is introduced that identifies all (co-)inventors on more than 3 million US patents between 1836 and 1975. Empirical analysis reveals (i) collaboration on US patents began to increase in the 1940s; (ii) there is a robust positive relationship between complexity and collaboration; and (iii) increasing complexity is associated with local rather than nonlocal collaboration. We present evidence on the effect of a public health crisis on housing markets through the lens of the recent opioid crisis in the U.S. Using data on opioid prescriptions and repeat sales in Ohio, we find that house price changes around opioid dispensaries are negatively associated with the quantity of opioids dispensed. To explore a causal inference, we use a potentially cleaner measure of supply that is based on vertical integration. We estimate that a one standard deviation increase in the standardized number of pills dispensed by vertically integrated pharmacies is associated with a 5.8% decrease in house price appreciation. Employing a recently developed panel econometric technique, first, we show that accounting for spatial dependence and heterogeneity yields more accurate risk factor coefficients and abnormal housing returns. Rather than systematic risks, idiosyncratic risks explain the variations in residential housing excess returns. After controlling for asset-specific and systematic risk factors, the positive and significant impact of the unobservable common factors on the excess returns suggests that speculative market forces drive the housing excess returns. Second, we then analyze the risks and returns of houses in affordable and expensive submarkets allowing for spatial dependence and heterogeneity. We find that houses in the affordable submarkets perform better than houses in the expensive submarkets. Thus, the potential demand for houses in the affordable submarket may aggravate the housing affordability crisis. Our study's results, therefore, encourage policymakers and investors to view the housing market as a collection of regional units and submarkets, but not as a single national market. The economic literature is unanimous on the fact that access to clean fuels has positive externalities on the different dimensions of welfare. However, the effects on deforestation are less known despite the existing relationship between the use of certain fuels and forest degradation. This study focuses on the effect of access to clean fuels and technologies for cooking on deforestation in developing countries. We examine this relationship going from a sample of 92 countries during the 2000 to 2015 period. The results show that access to clean fuels and technologies for cooking slow down deforestation. Based on its findings, the study suggests an urgent need of policy measures focusing on provision of clean fuels and technologies for cooking to households to reduce deforestation in developing countries. Moreover, the proportion of arable land has a significant effect on deforestation. We analyze land-use regulation and the determinants thereof across Swiss municipalities. We construct several residential development stringency indices based on a comprehensive survey. These indices capture various aspects of local regulation and land-use coordination across jurisdictions. Combining these indices, we construct an index that provides harmonized information about what local regulation entails and the local regulatory environment across municipalities. Our analysis shows that historical building density, natural amenities, socio-demographic factors, cultural aspects and municipal competition are important determinants of local land-use regulation. However, a large share of land-use regulation variation remains unexplained. Moreover, our results indicate that more stringent land-use regulation is associated with steeper house price increases but less urban sprawl. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
