Little is known about how the intensity of aerobic training influences appetite-regulating hormones in obese adolescents. Our goal was to assess the effect of low and high intensity aerobic trainings on food intake and appetite-regulating hormones in obese adolescents. Forty three obese adolescents (age: 13–18y, BMI: 34.48 ± 3.94 kg/m2) were randomized into high intensity training (HIT; n = 20) or low intensity training (LIT; n = 23) groups for 12 weeks. All participants also received the same nutritional, psychological and clinical counseling. Pre- and postintervention energy intake (EI) and circulating levels of insulin, leptin, peptide YY3–36 (PYY3–36) and ghrelin were measured. Adolescents in the HIT showed a reduction in total EI and an increase in PYY3–36 (p < .05). Aerobic exercise training performed at ventilatory threshold 1 intensity, reduced EI and augmented PYY3–36 in obese adolescents, compared with LIT. The data suggest that HIT and LIT have differential effects in the regulation of appetite signals and subsequent EI in obese adolescents.

Open Access funded by Sociedade Brasileira de Pediatria, Objective: To investigate the effects of multidisciplinary treatment with and without psychological counseling on obese adolescents’ self-reported quality of life. Methods: Seventy-six obese adolescents (15.87 ± 1.53 y) were allocated into psychological counseling group (PCG; n = 36) or control group (CG; n = 40) for 12 weeks. All participants received the same supervised exercise training, nutritional and clinical counseling. Participants in PCG also received psychological counseling. QOL was measured before and after 12 weeks of intervention by Generic Questionnaire for the Evaluation of Quality of Life (SF-36). Results: The dropout rate was higher in GC (22.5%) when compared with PCG (0.0%) (p < 0.001). After 12 weeks, participants from PCG presents lower body weight, relative fat mass and higher free fat mass (p < 0.001 for all) compared to GC. QOL improved among adolescents from both groups (p < 0.05), however, a better QOL was reported from those adolescents enrolled in PCG. Conclusion: The inclusion of a psychological counseling component in multidisciplinary treatmentfor adolescent obesity appears to provide benefits observed for improved QOL as compared with treatment without psychological counseling., Objetivo: Para investigar os efeitos do tratamento multidisciplinar com e sem aconselhamento psicológico voltado à qualidade de vida de adolescentes obesos. Métodos: 76 adolescentes obesos (15,87 ± 1,53 ano) foram alocados em um grupo de aconselhamento psicológico e (GAP; n = 36) ou grupo de controle (GC; n = 40) por 12 semanas. Todos os participantes receberam o mesmo treinamento físico supervisionado e aconselhamento nutricional e clínico. Os participantes no GAP também receberam aconselhamento psicológico. A qualidade de vida foi avaliada antes e depois das 12 semanas de intervenc¸ão por meio de um Questionário Genérico de Avaliac¸ão da Qualidade de Vida (SF-36). Resultados: O abandono do tratamento foi maior no GC (22,5%), em comparac¸ão ao GAP (0,0%) (p < 0,001). Após 12 semanas, os participantes do GAP apresentam menor peso corporal, massa gorda relativa e maior massa livre de gordura (p < 0,001 para todos) em comparac¸ão ao GC. A qualidade de vida melhorou entre os adolescentes de ambos os grupos (p < 0,05); contudo, uma melhor qualidade de vida foi relatada pelos adolescentes incluídos no GAP. Conclusão: A inclusão de aconselhamento psicológico no tratamento multidisciplinar dos adolescentes obesos parece proporcionar benefícios observados na melhoria da qualidade de vida, em comparac¸ão ao tratamento sem aconselhamento psicológico., All phases of this study were supported by the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPQ). Nos ultimos anos houve um aumento na busca por novos agentes terapeuticos utilizando plantas medicinais para o tratamento de disturbios psiquiatricos, por isso estudos com fitoterapicos estao sendo bastante reconhecidos como uma perspectiva nos tratamentos de doencas neurodegenerativas. Entre essas patologias pode ser descrita a epilepsia um dos disturbios neurologicos mais comuns, apresentando uma taxa de prevalencia de 5%. Partido deste contexto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar um rastreamento das pesquisas ja desenvolvidas e com resultados patenteados, avaliando as utilizacoes de plantas medicinais no manejo dos sintomas clinicos da epilepsia por meio do mapeamento de patentes nas bases de dados do Instituto Nacional de Propriedade Industrial (INPI), Organizacao Mundial de Propriedade Intelectual (WIPO), Banco Europeu de Patentes (EPO) e no Banco Americano de Marcas e Patentes (USPTO). Foi possivel observar um pequeno numero de patentes relacionadas as plantas medicinais e sua aplicabilidade no tratamento da epilepsia. Foi verificado tambem que nos ultimos 10 anos o numero de pedidos de patentes depositados nas bases PCT e EPO representa 51 e 45%, respectivamente, do total de patentes existente, estando alocadas principalmente na subclasse A61K (preparacoes para finalidades medicas, odontologicas ou higienicas). No entanto, e grande a necessidade de descoberta de novas opcoes terapeuticas no tratamento da epileptogenese. Sendo, assim, ha uma lacuna tecnologica a ser preenchida e um campo promissor para pesquisa e desenvolvimento de inovacoes tecnologicas.

A Mikania glomerata é uma planta pertencente à família Asteraceae que é bastante utilizada na medicina popular devido às suas ações broncodilatadora, antiasmática, expectorante e antitussígena. O objetivo do presente estudo foi determinar as propriedades físico-químicas do pó obtido a partir das folhas de M. glomerata, bem como, avaliar a toxicidade em camundongos após tratamento agudo com doses repetidas do extrato etanólico padronizado preparado a partir das folhas dessa espécie. Durante o estudo das propriedades físico-químicas do pó obtido a partir das folhas de M. glomerata foram feitas as determinações da densidade bruta e de compactação, do teor de cinzas totais, do teor de umidade, e da granulometria. De acordo com os resultados obtidos podemos sugerir que o pó pode ser usado na formulação de uma forma farmacêutica sólida. Na segunda parte do estudo foi determinada a Dose Letal 50% (DL50), bem como, realizada a análise morfológica macroscópica e avaliados a toxicidade aguda com doses repetidas e os parâmetros bioquímicos e hematológicos de camundongos. De acordo com os dados obtidos na segunda parte deste estudo podemos sugerir que o extrato etanólico pode ser usado de forma segura em humanos, uma vez que apresentou valor de DL50 de aproximadamente 3000 mg Kg-1), bem como, não produziu nenhuma alteração morfológica nos principais órgãos, e nem provocou alterações nos parâmetros bioquímicos e hematológicos de camundongos. The Mikania glomerata is a plant belonging to the Asteraceae that is widely used in folk medicine because of its bronchodilator, antiasthmatic, expectorant and antitussive actions. The aim of this study was to determine the physicochemical properties of the powder obtained from the leaves of M. glomerata, and to evaluate its toxicity in mice after acute treatment with repeated doses of standardized ethanol extract prepared from the leaves of this plant species. We determined the bulk and packing density, the total ash content, the moisture content and the particle size. The results suggest that the powder can be used in the formulating of a solid pharmaceutical form. In the second part of this study, we determined the 50% lethal dose (LD50), performed the gross morphological analysis and evaluated the acute toxicity from the use of repeated doses and the biochemical and hematologic parameters in mice. The data obtained in this part suggest that the ethanol extract can be used safely in humans, since it has a LD50 value of approximately 3000 mg kg -1 and produced no morphological changes in the major organs, or caused alterations in the biochemical and hematological parameters in mice.

Shunting is fundamental in neurosurgical practice and a large number of patients experience shunt dysfunction throughout life. The Seldinger technique seems to be a valuable tool in the management of dysfunctions and consists of coagulating the choroid plexus before shunt removal. We report the unique case of a neuroendoscopic view of choroid plexus coagulation by the Seldinger technique in a 7-year-old child with shunt dysfunction submitted to endoscopic third ventriculostomy and previous shunt removal. We reinforce the security and efficacy of the Seldinger technique with a direct neuroendoscopic view of the coagulation process.

A caracterização química do óleo essencial de folhas de Citrus limon (Rutaceae) resultou na identificação de mistura de monoterpenos (limoneno, linalol, cis-óxido de limoneno, trans-óxido de limoneno, citronelal, neral, geranial, nerol e acetato de geranil). As estruturas dos compostos do óleo essencial foram identificadas por GC/MS, por comparação com dados da literatura. Os efeitos da administração crônica oral do óleo essencial de folhas de Citrus limon foram investigados sobre parâmetros bioquímicos e hematológicos em camundongos Swiss machos. Os animais (n = 10/grupo) foram tratados por via oral diariamente durante 30 dias com óleo essencial de folhas de Citrus limon, nas doses de 50, 100 ou 150 mg kg-1 de massa corporal e os parâmetros bioquímicos e hematológicos avaliados. O tratamento não causou nenhuma morte ou toxicidade nos animais. A administração do óleo essencial não alterou os parâmetros bioquímicos e hematológicos e a massa dos órgãos, exceto por diminuição de 21 e 11% em uréia e ácido úrico, respectivamente, e 9%, nos níveis plasmáticos de aspartato transaminase (AST). Para os parâmetros hematológicos, houve pequenas mudanças nas contagens de neutrófilos, linfócitos, eosinófilos e monócitos, mas estes não foram diferentes dos valores de referência. Além disso, houve diminuição significativa nos triglicerídeos detectado nos animais tratados com dose de 150 mg kg-1 de óleo essencial. Em conclusão, a administração crônica de óleo essencial não induziu nenhum efeito de risco na maioria dos parâmetros bioquímicos e hematológicos estudados em camundongos Swiss machos. No entanto, a diminuição dos níveis de uréia e ácido úrico em doses elevadas, sugere um possível efeito de insuficiência renal e aumento no teor de AST, sugerindo possível sobrecarga hepática que deve ser investigada com mais detalhe. The chemical characterization of the essential oil of Citrus limon (Rutaceae) leaves resulted in the identification of a mixture of monoterpenes (limonene, linalool, cis-limonene-oxide, trans-limonene-oxide, citronellal, neral, geranial, nerol e geranyl acetate). The structures of the compounds of essential oil were identified by GC/MS by comparison with literature data. The effects of the chronic oral administration of the essential oil of Citrus limon leaves were investigated on biochemical and hematological parameters in male adult Swiss mice. These animals (n=10/group) were orally treated daily for 30 days with essential oil of Citrus limon leaves with doses of 50, 100 or 150 mg kg-1 body weight and the biochemical and hematological parameters were evaluated. The treatment did not cause any deaths or toxicity in the animals. The administration of essential oil did not change biochemical and hematological parameters and organ weight, except for decreases of 21 and 11% in blood urea nitrogen and uric acid respectively, and 9%, in aspatate transaminase (AST) plasma level. For the hematological parameters, there were slight changes in which neutrophil, lymphocytes, eosinophils and monocyte counts were not different from the reference values. In addition, with respect to serum triglyceride a significant decrease was detected in mice treated with a dose of 150 mg kg-1 of essential oil from Citrus limon. In conclusion, the chronic administration of essential oil of Citrus limon leaves did not induce any harzadous effects on most of the biochemical and hematological parameters studied in male adult Swiss mice. However, the decrease in the levels in blood urea nitrogen and uric acid in high doses, suggests a possible effect of renal insufficiency and an increase in AST content, which in its turn, suggests a possible hepatic overload which should be investigated in more details.

Background The aim of this study was to determine the acute effects of exercise intensity on anxiety, mood states and hunger in obese adolescents. Methods Subjects were eight male obese adolescents (age 15.44 ± 2.06y; BMI 33.06 ± 4.78 kg/m2). Each subject underwent three experimental trials: 1) Control, seated for 30 min; 2) Low intensity exercise (LIE) - exercise at 10% below ventilatory threshold (VT); 3) High intensity exercise (HIE) - exercise at 10% above VT. Anxiety (STAI Trait/State), mood (POMS) and hunger (VAS) were assessed before and immediately after the experimental sessions. Comparisons between trials and times were assessed using Kruskal-Wallis and Wilcoxon tests, respectively. Associations between variables were described using a Spearman test. Results The largest increase in hunger was observed after LEI (914.22%).
