Abstract: Inclusive photoproduction of D*+- in ep collisions at HERA has been measured with the ZEUS detector for photon-proton centre of mass energies in the range 115 < W < 280 GeV and photon virtuality Q**2 < 4 GeV**2. The cross section sigma(ep --> D*X) integrated over the kinematic region pt(D*) > 3 GeV and -1.5 < eta(D*) < 1.0 is (10.6+-1.7(stat.)+1.6(syst.)-1.3(syst.)) nb. Differential cross sections as functions of pt(D*), eta(D*) and W are given. The data are compared with two next-to-leading order perturbative QCD predictions. For a calculation using a massive charm scheme the predicted cross sections are smaller than the measured ones. A recent calculation using a massless charm scheme is in agreement with the data., 18 pages including 4 figures

Abstract: The gluon momentum density xg ( x , Q 2 ) of the proton was extracted at Q 2 = 20 GeV 2 for small values of x between 4 × 10 −4 and 10 −2 from the scaling violations of the proton structure function F 2 measured recently by ZEUS in deep inelastic neutral current ep scattering at HERA. The extraction was performed in two ways. Firstly, using a global NLO fit to the ZEUS data on F 2 at low x constrained by measurementsfrom NMC at larger x ; and secondly using published approximate methods for the solution of the GLAP QCD evolution equations. Consistent results are obtained. A substantial increase of the gluon density is found at small x in comparison with the NMC result obtained at larger values of x .

Abstract: Events with a large rapidity gap and total transverse energy greater than 5 GeV have been observed in quasi-real photoproduction at HERA with the ZEUS detector. The distribution of these events as a function of the $\gamma p$ centre of mass energy is consistent with diffractive scattering. For total transverse energies above 12 GeV, the hadronic final states show predominantly a two-jet structure with each jet having a transverse energy greater than 4 GeV. For the two-jet events, little energy flow is found outside the jets. This observation is consistent with the hard scattering of a quasi-real photon with a colourless object in the proton., Comment: 19 pages, latex, 4 figures appended as uuencoded file

Abstract: The production of $\phi$ mesons in the reaction $e^{+}p \rightarrow e^{+} \phi p$ ($\phi \rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}$) at a median $Q^{2}$ of $10^{-4} \ \rm{GeV^2}$ has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The differential $\phi$ photoproduction cross section $d\sigma/dt$ has an exponential shape and has been determined in the kinematic range $0.1, Comment: 23 pages, including 6 post script figures

Abstract: This paper reports the cross section measurements for the process ep $\rightarrow$ e~\jpsi~p for $Q^2 < 4$ GeV$^2$ at $\sqrt s = 296$ GeV, based on an integrated luminosity of about 0.5~pb$^{-1}$, using the ZEUS detector. The \jpsi~was detected in its $\rm e^{+}e^{-}$ and $\rm \mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ decay modes. The photoproduction cross section was measured to be $52^{ \ +7}_{-12}\pm 10$~nb at an average $\gamma$p centre of mass energy of 67 GeV and $71^{+13}_{-20}\pm 12$~nb at 114 GeV. The significant rise of the cross section compared to lower energy measurements is not in agreement with VDM models, but can be described by QCD inspired models if a rise in the gluon momentum density at low $x$ in the proton is assumed., Comment: 21 pages, latex, 4 figures appended as uuencoded file

8. The imaginary part of the helicity nonflip C = −1 exchange amplitudes in elastic scattering between 6 and 14 GeV

Abstract: Using accurate data on the differential cross sections for elastic scattering of particles and antiparticles on protons from 6 to 14 GeV, the projection of the C = −1 exchange amplitude onto the dominant diffractive amplitude is measured. Strong peripherality in impact parameter space is observed for all the measured amplitudes with peak values scaling with the interaction radius. The zero of the imaginary part of the C = −1 exchange amplitude in K ± p scattering moves to smaller t values as the energy increases from 6 to 14 GeV. The p ± p exchange amplitude is more peripheral than the π ± p and K ± p counterparts and an unexpected energy dependence is observed.

Abstract: Nearly 200 000 examples of the diffractive process K−p → K−π−π+p at 63 GeV have been obtained using a two magnet spectrometer equipped with Cerenkov counters for secondary particle identification. In addition some 2000 examples of the process K−p → ωK−p have been obtained. The Kππ data have been subjected to partial-wave analysis. The dominant JP = 1+ system couples to K ∗ π , in both S and D waves, ϱK, κπ and eK. The data confirm the existence of two JP = 1+ Q mesons and their masses, widths and branching ratios are given. The ifωK data show that the couplings of the Q mesons to ωK are approximately equal to the couplings to ϱ0K. The two 1+ nonets expected in the quark model are discussed in the light of this and other recent experiments. There is strong evidence for a broad JP = 0− resonance at about 1.46 GeV. At higher masses, structure in the JP = 2− partial waves establishes the existence of at least one JP = 2− L meson.

Abstract: We present high-statistics data on differential cross sections and density matrix elements for K/sup + -//sup()production obtained in a 13-GeV/c SLAC experiment. The most remarkable features of the data are the dominance of natural-parity exchange and significant differences between K/sup +/ and K/sup -/ production by natural-parity isoscalar exchange. We present two exchange models which successfully describe this difference, as well as the overall t dependence: model A including Pomeron plus strongly exchange-degenerate Regge poles and model B involving broken exchange degeneracy for the f and ..omega.. exchanges. These two phenomenological models lead to different predictions for the energy dependence of K/sup + -/production, for the relative K(1420)/K(890) production rate, and for the SU(3) -related rho/sup + -/production processes.

Abstract: We summarize and combine the known information on the decay rates of the strangeness-one axial vector mesons, Q 1 and Q 2 . From this information and the rate for B→ωπ, we determine the Q A −Q B mixing angle and the S -wave, symmetric and antisymmetric octet couplings for vector-pseudoscalar decays of axial vector mesons. If we assume the D(1285) and the E(1420) belong to the J PC =1 ++ nonet, we find the A 1 to have a mass of ∼1.47 GeV and a large (>0.3 GeV) width.

Abstract: From a partial wave analysis of the reaction πN→ππN we extract 50 cuoplings and partial widths for N * resonance decaying into Δπ, ϱN and eN. Three different methods of determining the resonance parameters are compared. The signs of the πΔ couplings are found to be consistent with the predictions of l-broken SU(6) w , if one assigns P′ 11 (1415), P″ 11 (1730) and P 33 (1700) to [56, L=0 + ] supermultiplets. The signs of the ϱN couplings are inconsistent with SU(6) w symmetry in its l-broken form, but in good agreement with the observed photon couplings.

Abstract: The shape of the four-momentum transfer t′ distribution in the reactions K±p→K±π+π−p at 13 GeV/c is studied for various partial waves as a function of the Kππ mass. Strong variation of the slope with effective mass is observed for the dominant JP=1+ waves. For natural parity exchange it is found that, for Kππ masses up to 1.6 GeV, the slope of the t′ distribution is decreasing with increasing spin of the excited system, B0−>B1+>B2+.

Abstract: The differential cross sections and density matrix elements for the φ and ϱ0 mesons have been measured in the reactions K−p → K−K+ (Λ, Σ0) and K−p → π−π+ (Λ, Σ0) at 13 GeV using a wire chamber spectrometer. The analysis shows that while the vector meson production is dominated by the natural parity exchange amplitude, some unnatural parity exchange is also required. Furthermore the φ and ϱ natural exchange cross sections are identical in shape and have the 2:1 relative strength expected in the quark model with K∗ and K∗∗ exchange degeneracy. The analysis of the clear peak-dip ϱ0−ω interference pattern observed in the π−π+ data indicates that the ω production is in phase with the ϱ and of similar magnitude. Both the S∗ and f′ meson are clearly observed in this experiment. The S∗ data are found to be consistent with S∗ parameters deduced from ππ scattering analyses. The f′ density matrix elements and a new limit of the f′ → π−π+ branching ratio are presented.

Abstract: A model in which Q1 and Q2 resonance contributions add coherently to a Gaussian background is shown to reproduce the mass dependence of the JP = 1+K∗π and ϱK partial waves in K±p→K±π+π− at 13 GeV/c. Through a fit to the data, the mass and total width for Q1 are found to be m = 1289 ± 3 ± (25) MeV, Λ = 150 ± 9 (±70) MeV and for Q2, m = 1404 ± 3 (±10) MeV, Λ = 142 ± 4 (±15) MeV, where estimated systematic errors are given in parentheses. While a significant background is required for the 1+K∗π system, none is needed for the 1+ϱK system.

Abstract: We present the results of a partial wave analysis of πN → ππN in the energy region 1300–2000 MeV. Two continuous solutions have been found, in which all the major resonances are observed in the inelastic channels. The existence of P 13 (1700) and P 11 (1700) states are confirmed, and evidence for a new resonance, D 13 (1700), is presented. Further, our best solution (“B”) indicates the presence of resonant structure in the 1700–1900 MeV region for the P 33 wave. Finally, analysis of data on π + p → π + pπ 0 at 1610 MeV demonstrates that this solution (“B”) is the best description of inelastic πN scattering at these energies.

Abstract: Our previous SU(6) W analysis of baryon decays is extended to include further possible SU(6) W × O(3) multiplets, and in particular the Roper multiplet. Both pion and photo-production data indicate that the two available nucleon P11 resonances cannot be classified in even parity 70 multiplets. Both are consistent with { 56 , 0 + } radial excitation assignments, thus casting some doubt on explicit energy level calculations of conventional harmonic oscillator quark models. For the { 70 , 1 − } and { 56 , 2 + } multiplets, the ϱN decays are compared with the predictions of an SU(6) W model motivated via the Melosh transformation. There are possible difficulties but no striking sign disagreements. We conclude that there is strong evidence for an algebraic SU(6) structure in the baryon decays but that other more specific SU(6) models seem to be in difficulty.

In both solutions, A and B, the total ππN decay of the N∗(D15) is accounted for by the Δπ channel whereas only in solution B does the Δπ channel correspond to the total ππN decay of the N∗(F15). The relative sign of the couplings of the resonances to Δπ is also different between solutions, being negative in solution A and positive in solution B. The results are used to predict the decay rates of other members of the octets.

Abstract: The differential cross section for K ± p elastic scattering has been measured in the very low t region (0.003 t 2 ) in a wire chamber spectrometer experiment at 10.4 and 14 GeV/ c . The interference effect observed between the Coulomb and the nuclear interaction has been used to determine α, the ratio of real to imaginary part of the forward scattering amplitude. At 10.4 GeV/ c we measure α (K + p) = −0.21 ± 0.06 and α (K − p = 0.08 ± 0.04, and at 14 GeV/ c , α (K + p) = − 0.13 ± 0.03 and α (K − p) = 0.000 ± 0.04 in agreeement with the predictions of dispersion theory calculation.

Abstract: Differential cross sections in the t -range between 0.02 and 1.5 GeV 2 have been measured for the elastic scattering of particles and antiparticles on protons at 6.4, 10.4 and 14 GeV for K ± p and 10.4 GeV for π ± p and p ± p . Large statistics have been achieved and systematic uncertainties have been minimized. The relative systematic uncertainty between particle and antiparticle data is less than 0.5%. Accurate measurements of the position of the first crossover between particle and antiparticle differential cross sections have been performed. As the energy increases from 6.4 to 14 GeV the K ± p crossover moves to smaller values by 0.010 GeV 2 with a statistical error of 0.006 GeV 2 and a systematic uncertainty of 0.005 GeV 2 . The crossover positions at 10.4 GeV for π ± , K ± and p ± scale approximately with the interaction radii.

Abstract: The production of φ mesons in the reaction e+p → e+φp (φ → K+K−), for 7 Q 2 GeV 2 and virtual photon-proton centre of mass energies (W) in the range 42–134 GeV, has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA. When compared to lower energy data at similar Q 2, the results show that the γ ∗ p → φp cross section rises strongly with W. This behaviour is similar to that previously found for the γ ∗ p → ϱ 0 p cross section. This strong dependence cannot be explained by production through soft pomeron exchange. It is, however, consistent with perturbative QCD expectations, where it reflects the rise of the gluon momentum density in the proton at small x. The ratio of σ(φ) σ(ϱ 0 ) , which has previously been determined by ZEUS to be 0.065 ± 0.013 (stat.) in photoproduction at a mean W of 70 GeV, is measured to be 0.18 ± 0.05 (stat.) ± 0.03 (syst.) at a mean Q 2 of 12.3 GeV2 and mean W of ≈ 100 GeV and is thus approaching at large Q 2 the value of 2 9 predicted from the quark charges of the vector mesons and a flavour independent production mechanism.

Abstract: Charged particle production has been measured in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) events over a large range of $x$ and $Q^2$ using the ZEUS detector. The evolution of the scaled momentum, $x_p$, with $Q^2,$ in the range 10 to 1280 $GeV^2$, has been investigated in the current fragmentation region of the Breit frame. The results show clear evidence, in a single experiment, for scaling violations in scaled momenta as a function of $Q^2$., Comment: 21 pages including 4 figures, to be published in Physics Letters B. Abstract: Jet photoproduction, where the two highest transverse energy ($\ETJ$) jets have $\ETJ$ above 6 GeV and a jet-jet invariant mass above 23~GeV, has been studied with the ZEUS detector at the HERA $ep$ collider. Resolved and direct photoproduction samples have been separated. The cross section as a function of the angle between the jet-jet axis and the beam direction in the dijet rest frame has been measured for the two samples. The measured angular distributions differ markedly from each other. They agree with the predictions of QCD calculations, where the different angular distributions reflect the different spins of the quark and gluon exchanged in the hard subprocess., 20 pages including 4 figures

Abstract: Cross sections and representative distributions are given for the reactions ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}n$, ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ based on 85 000 inelastic events in the c.m. energy region 1400-2000 MeV. The angular distributions of beam, defined with respect to the final-state particles are given in terms of their moments as a function of Dalitz plot position and c.m. energy.
