Structural optimisation techniques are frequently used as part of the design process for composite wind turbine blades. Most commonly this is achieved by modifying material placement within a standard structural design; less attention has been paid to the possibility of varying internal geometry to create novel structural configurations. In this work, a series of wind turbine blade designs with differing structural configurations have been created and compared to investigate the effect of allowing various aspects of the internal structural geometry to be varied. The geometry of the structural spar is thoroughly investigated by modifying the width of the spar caps, and the number and location of shear webs including the spanwise starting and ending locations. The location and extent of a trailing edge reinforcement are also considered, along with the material thickness distribution of the spar and trailing edge reinforcement. A series of five parametric 2D finite element models with geometry and materials placement variables were created and incorporated into a genetic optimisation algorithm. This method allows the optimisation process sufficient freedom to generate designs without being constrained by preconceived ideas of how the internal geometry should be configured. The optimum designs had mass reduced relative to the baseline by 3.5–7.4%. Structural analysis of the optimum designs revealed that the active constraint varied greatly between the different designs, and it is therefore recommended that a wider range of loading cases and constraints needs to be accounted for in optimisations that allow the structural geometry to vary compared to those that use a standard geometry.

The majority of wind power is currently produced on high wind speed sites, and the standard design of wind turbine blades has evolved to be structurally efficient under these conditions. Recently, sites with lower quality wind resources have begun to be considered for new wind farms. This study confirms the expectation that the standard high wind speed design process results in less efficient structures when used for low wind speed conditions, and that a low wind speed specific design process is able to yield structural improvements. A comparative structural analysis of generic blades from high and low wind speed turbines quantifies the differences in structural performance between high and low wind speed blades, and indicates the ways in which the standard design process should be modified to suit a low wind speed specific design. An improved design method specifically for low wind speed blades is proposed, with more emphasis on stiffness than in the standard high wind speed design. The improved design process results in a lighter and cheaper blade than the conventionally designed one, whilst still fulfilling the design requirements.

Three recent articles have examined head-hunting and kidnapping rumors in connection with construction sacrifice on Borneo and Flores. This paper presents further information on such rumors on Flores and elsewhere in Indonesia which largely confirms their interpretations. However, the argument is made that rather than being a new phenomenon and a product of the colonial era, these rumors may well have been characteristic of Indonesia from ancient times and have typically been associated with offices of political and military potency. Policies and activities of the Dutch near the Solor islands since the seventeenth century may have strongly reinforced suspicions that they were capable of taking heads through local agents.

The authors focus on CYMSTAB-UDM, a transient stability program that was designed to circumvent the restrictions associated with library-based simulation tools. Equipment libraries were kept available to the program, while at the same time allowing the user to carry out simulations using novel control strategies. The US Department of Energy selected the Battelle-Electric Power Research Institute-Science Applications International Corporation team to evaluate and develop on-line slurry ash, percent solids, and sulfur analysis instrumentation and process control technology. The project's objectives were (1) to develop an accurate, versatile, easy to use, on-line coal slurry analyzer and (2) to develop control strategies for analysis, control, and optimization of advanced and conventional coal-cleaning plant. The project's scope included (1) the installation of a slurry test loop, ash, percent solids, and sulfur instruments; (2) evaluation of instrument accuracy with various coals, under various slurry conditions; and (3) assessment of the cost and benefits to be derived from on-line analysis and control 12 refs., 40 figs., 16 tabs.

On 2nd February 1648 the earth began to tremble around the stone fort situated at Lohayong (Lawayong), Solor, in what is now the Province of Nusa Tenggara Timur, eastern Indonesia. Major Willem van der Beek, together with the crew of 'den Wolff, safely anchored offshore in the protection of the calm Solor Strait, watched from its decks as the points and curtain walls of the fort collapsed. The walls at the entrance, built many years previously and masoned deep under the earth, were driven out with great force.Cannons flew out of the ramparts, and the mountain range behind the fort was riven asunder, while great rocks were thrown out of the earth. Four people died, including the small son of the new Dutch Commander, Hendrik ter Horst, and nine persons suffered in juries. The vats holding wine, butter, oil, brine, bacon and meat burst open, so that little was salvageable of the provisions recently brought by 'den Wolff. The earth tremors continued, but not severely, for several days. Through constant work from the garrison and sailors and help from the Solorese, who gave bamboo, palm leaves, wood and other material, van der Beek managed to make the fortress defensible again and to restore the dwellings and warehouses. This effort, however, was put to nought in May, when on the 24th the fort was once again badly shaken. No one was hurt this time, but the walls were split in several places. Reporting the destruction, ter Horst wrote that another such shock would finish the structure, which was a very old building (over eighty years since con struction), held together in place of chalk merely with stonelike earth. The main holes on the west side were made good with 116 palisade poles brought in within a few days by 'd'Zeemeuw', but the commander was unable to get the local leaders to order the preparation of lime ovens for repairs because the villagers needed to bring in their harvest (Tiele and Heeres 1895:418-22, 427; de Hullu 1903:90-91; Anonymous 1650:38-39).

The Migara-Kertsgama contains a list of dependencies of Majapahit, including a series of islands in eastern Indonesia, among them Galiyao, Sumba, Solot and Timur (Pigeaud 1962, IV:34). In a recent article van Fraassen (1976) has attempted to identify Galiyao with Kalao between Saleier and Flores. I shall try on the contrary to bring Galiyao back to the Solor Archipelago. It speaks in favor of van Fraassen's choice that the name Galiyao appears in a sequence of locations around Sulawesi, but as Pigeaud notes, the list has no order, six remote islands being mentioned for example between Solor and Timor. Kalao does indeed look more like Galiyao than do the designations of any of the other islands or districts which have been suggested from time to time, and the strength of van Fraassen's position lies in this similarity. There are a number of early sources for Galiyao. In a book first published in 1563, GalvAo (1944:85, 170) describes the first Portu guese expedition to the Moluccas as sailing in 1511 from Java past Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa, Solor, Galao and Malua (Alor). Pigafetta's account and chart of the "Victoria's" voyage into the Ombai Strait in January 1522 refer likewise to Galiau between Zolot and Mallua. Galian appears between Sulawesi and Buru on the world map by Ortelius of 1564. Mercator's world map of 1569 places Galiam, Noceuamor and Zolot incorrectly in the Flores Sea to the north of Alor (Vatter 1932, table 7). His later map of the Far East joins Pantar and Lembata into one island named Louballo (Mercator 1636). Linschoten's map of Asia shows Guliam between Solor and Alor, but like other sources of the time does not distinguish Lembata from Pantar (Lin schoten 1579-1592). The early map makers copied one another, and all those showing Galiyao derive one way or another evidently from Pigafetta.

Time-integrated spectral measurements of the light from multiple arc sources in iodine laser gas mixtures (He:SF6:i-C3F7I and Ar:SF6:i-C3F7I) are described. Copious soft-UV output, fully sufficient as a pump source, is observed with no adverse decrease in UV production for i-C3F7I concentrations as high as 3% by volume. Conversion efficiencies of 3–4% for stored electrical energy into UV radiation within the iodide compound band were determined.

EDUCATED FISHERMEN R. H. BARNES The fishing and whaling village of Lamalera, Indonesia has experienced nearly a hundred years of externally induced social change, including education, Christianity, governmental reorganization, improved transportation, and an intensive three year project by the Food and Agricultural Organization. The cumulative effects of these changes have brought the traditional economy under severe pressure and curtailed the village's growth. Natural events have also had adverse consequences. Yet the apparent decline in village vigor may just as well be attributed to the community's success in coping with change. Villagers are increasingly making their way into positions in the modern economy and state, leaving older patterns in decline. This article explores the background to this paradox and suggests that what has happened in Lamalera parallels transformations which occurred somewhat earlier in western Indonesia, while perhaps exhibiting a pattern which eventually may become more common in eastern Indonesia. Planned and consciously directed transformations on a regional and national scale will continue to have pronounced local effects., PECHEURS ET EDUCATION Conséquences sociales du développement à Lamalera (Nusa Tenggara, Indonésie) R. BARNES Le village de pêcheurs de Lamalera - le seul village d'Indonésie à pratiquer la pêche au cachalot - a connu près d'un siècle de transformations sociales imposées de l'extérieur, parmi lesquelles on compte l'éducation, le christianisme, la réorganisation administrative, l'amélioration des transports et l'impact pendant trois années consécutives d'un projet intensif de l'Organisation des Nations Unies pour l'Alimentation et l'Agriculture (F АО). Les effets cumulatifs qui en ont résulté paraissent avoir soumis l'économie traditionnelle à une forte pression et auraient ainsi fait obstacle à la croissance du village. Les conséquences de catastrophes naturelles sont de même à prendre en compte. Cependant, le déclin apparent de la vigueur du village peut tout aussi bien être attribué à la réussite de la communauté lorsqu'il s'est agi de s'adapter au changement: les villageois parviennent de mieux en mieux - en s'exilant - à obtenir des postes dans les secteurs modernes de l'économie et de l'Etat, et délaissent de ce fait les vieux modèles. Cet article analyse les tenants et les aboutissants de cette situation paradoxale. Il suggère que ce qui est arrivé à Lamalera est un reflet des transformations survenues à plus haute époque dans l'ouest de l'Indonésie et pourrait fournir le modèle d'un processus à venir dans l'Est Indonésien. A number-density measurement of several postflame species and a temperature profile were obtained in a 0.1-atm methane-air flame utilizing Raman scattering data. Similar flame measurements utilizing thermocouples and microprobe/mass-spectrometer methods are also presented. Good experimental agreement was evident between the scattering measurements and the probe results, which indicated that accurate, non-perturbing spectroscopic data can be obtained in combustion environments. The application of Raman scattering to a research furnace and a magnetohydrodynamic combustor exit environment are also briefly discussed.

In a recent essay on Karo Batak social organization with especial reference to Masri Singarimbun's very readable and accomplished ethnography (1975), Needham (1978: 146) has had occasion to refer to some of my own comments about the form of their terminological system. In particular he has drawn into contention my claim that the Karo Batak have a symmetric prescriptive terminology with asym metric features (1976: 389). He opposes (p. 142) to this interpretation his own to the effect that the Karo actually have "a modified form of asymmetric prescriptive terminology".. Furthermore, he dismisses (p. 143) the possibility that the Karo system may once have been symmetric before evolving towards asymmetry ? in this case alluding to one of his own theories (1967: 45-46). The first issue is whether the Karo have a marriage prescription. The ethnographer denies it, "the Karo do not prescribe or enjoin MBD or classificatory impal marriage" (p. 193). "Ghoice of a spouse among the Karo is not restricted to any one category of kinswoman or kins man" (p. 153). In my own view, the ethnography will bear the inter pretation that the terminology contains a categorical prescription, but the facts as set out do not conclusively rule out alternative ways of analyzing Karo terminology. On the other hand, there seems to be no doubt about what I called the asymmetric features of the terminology. Needham has written a carefully detailed demonstration of my point. In the first instance our disagreement is a trivial one about English usage. The English phrase "symmetric prescriptive terminology" without supplementary punc tuation can mean one of two things: (1) "a prescriptive terminology which is symmetric" or (2) "a terminology with a symmetric prescrip tion". Needham (1966, 1968) has already shown that these two senses need not be the same.

Baby pigs were malnourished for a period of 8 weeks by restricting protein or caloric intake with the objective of studying behavioral changes that remained long after nutritional rehabilitation had been achieved. An apparatus was designed for the measurement of changes in the level of excitement or emotionality under conditions of stress, as well as changes in learning performance in a conditioned avoidance situation. The most striking behavioral change due to early malnutrition was the heightened excitement of the pigs when exposed to aversive stimuli, although there was also an indication of decreased learning ability. Since learning performance can be affected by behavioral factors that influence the level of reinforcement (reward or punishment), impaired learning may be due either to decreased intelligence (capacity) or to elevated excitement and consequent over-reaction to reinforcement. The nutritional condition which caused the greatest change in behavioral development resulted from feeding a diet very low in protein from the third through the eleventh week of life. Behavioral abnormalities were also noted, although in lesser degree, if the low protein diet was initiated later, i.e., seventh to fifteenth week of life or if a diet of normal composition was fed in restricted quantity so as to prevent growth during an 8-week period starting either at birth or at 3 weeks of age.

Characterization of the gas chemistry, velocity, pressure, turbulence, and conductivity for coal-fired MHD generators would serve as valuable information for direct correlation with long-term performance of electrode and insulator materials. Gas chemistry is of special significance from a materials performance standpoint since the slag/gas, and hence slag/wall, physical and electrical states are affected by the chemical composition of the channel effluent. In recent years spectroscopic diagnostic techniques have been developed to the point that they can be used to obtain these detailed thermochemical measurements. A specific technique called Raman scattering is discussed and preliminary MHD combustor exit flow data are presented. The primary objective of the study was to determine if the presence of potassium seed would compromise the weak Raman spectral emission from key combustor species.
