Abstract: A search for stable or long-lived heavy charged particles in e+e− interactions at energies of 130–136, 161 and 172 GeV has been performed using the data taken by the DELPHI experiment at LEP. The search is based on particle identification provided by the Time Projection Chamber and the Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are derived on the cross-section for heavy long-lived pair-produced charge ±e and View the MathML source particles in the range of 0.4–2.3 pb for masses from 45 to 84 GeV/c2. Within supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model, long-lived charginos with masses from 45 to 84 (80) GeV/c2 for high (low) sneutrino masses can be excluded at 95% confidence level. Left-handed (right-handed) long-lived or stable smuons and staus with masses between 45 and 68 (65) GeV/c2 can be excluded at 95% confidence level.

Abstract: We have searched for excited states of charged and neutral leptons, e∗, μ ∗ , τ ∗ and ν ∗ , in e+e− collisions at s =130 using the OPAL detector at LEP. No evidence for their existence was found. With the most common coupling assumptions, the final states from excited lepton pair production include l+l−γγ and l+l−WW (with the subsequent decay of the virtual W bosons). From the analysis of these final states, 95% confidence level lower mass limits of 66.5 GeV for e∗, 66.8 GeV for μ ∗ , 65.3 GeV for τ ∗ , 66.2 GeV for ν e ∗ , 66.5 GeV for ν μ ∗ and 64.7 GeV for ν τ ∗ are inferred. From the analysis of γγ final states with missing energy and using alternative coupling assignments which permit photonic ν ∗ decays, a 95% confidence level lower mass limit of 65.0 GeV for each ν ∗ flavour is inferred. From the analysis of the l+l−γ, acoplanar lepton pair, and single γ final states expected from excited lepton single production, upper limits on f Λ (ratio of the coupling to the compositeness scale) are determined for excited lepton masses up to the kinematic limit.

Abstract: This letter reports the results of the measurement of single photon production in the reaction e+e− → γ+ invisible particles at centre-of-mass energies View the MathML source and 136 GeV and an integrated luminosity of 5.83 pb−1, collected with the DELPHI detector at LEP. The signal is compatible with the prediction of the Standard Model for the process View the MathML source, and the number of neutrino families has been determined to be Nν = 3.1 ± 0.6. Limits have been derived on anomalous neutral gauge boson couplings and on compositeness in the framework of a specific model.

Abstract: During the last 1995 data acquisition period at LEP, the DELPHI experiment collected an integrated luminosity of 5.9 pb−1 at centre-of-mass energies of 130 GeV and 136 GeV. Radiative leptonic events (e, μ, τ) with high energy photons were studied and compared to Standard Model predictions. The data were used to search for charged excited leptons decaying through an electromagnetic transition. No significant signal was found. From the search for pair produced excited leptons, the limits View the MathML source, View the MathML source and View the MathML source at 95% confidence level were established. For single excited lepton production, upper limits on the ratio View the MathML source of the coupling of the excited charged lepton to its mass were derived.

Abstract: From the data collected by DELPHI at LEP in autumn 1995, the multiplicity of charged particles at a hadronic energy of 130 GeV has been measured to be 〈nch〉 = 23.84 ± 0.51 (stat) ± 0.52 (syst). When compared to lower energy data, the value measured is consistent with the evolution predicted by QCD with corrections at next-to-leading order, for a value αs(130 GeV) = 0.105 ± 0.003 (stat) ± 0.008 (syst).

Abstract: A total of about View the MathML source decays have been analyzed to measure the View the MathML source mixing probability. Two different b tagging techniques have been used: events with two leptons and events with one lepton and one Λ. From a combination of the two methods the average mixing parameter, χ, was determined to be (12.1±1.6(stat.)±0.4(syst.)±0.4(model)%.

Abstract: The total and the differential cross sections for the reaction e+e− → γγ(γ) have been measured with the DELPHI detector at LEP using an integrated luminosity of 36.9 pb−1. The results agree with the QED predictions and consequently there is no evidence for non-standard channels with the same experimental signature. The lower limits obtained on the QED cutoff parameters are Λ+ > 143 GeV and Λ− > 120 GeV, and the lower bound on the mass of an excited electron with an effective coupling constant λγ = 1 is 132 GeV/c2. Upper limits on the branching ratios for the decays Z0 → γγ, Z0 → π0γ, Z0 → ηγ and Z0 → γγγ have been determined to be 5.5 × 10−5, 5.5 × 10−5, 8.0 × 10−5, and 1.7 × 10−5 respectively. All the limits are at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract: We present a search for the third generation up type quark t and a possible fourth down type quark b' in hadronic Z0 decays observed in DELPHI at the LEP collider. For any scenario with a decay through the charged current or into a charged Higgs with a mass at least 6 GeV/c2 below the t and 3 GeVc2 below the b' mass, we set a lower limit for the t quark mass at 44.0 GeV/c2 and for the b' mass at 44.5 GeV/c2. For specific scenarios the mass limits are slightly higher, e.g. for charged current decays the limits are 44.5 and 45.0 GeV/c2 respectively, where all limits are given at a 95% confidence level. © 1990., 0, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract: This analysis, based on a sample of 170000 hadronic Z0 decays, provides a measurement of the K± and p/View the MathML source differential cross sections which is compared to string- and cluster fragmentation models. The total multiplicities for K± and p/View the MathML source per hadronic event were found to be: NK = 2.26 ± 0.18 and Np = 1.07 ± 0.14. The positions ξ* of the maxima of the differential cross sections as a function of ξ = ln(1/xp) for K± and p/View the MathML source were determined to be 2.63 ± 0.07 and 2.96 ± 0.16 respectively. A comparison of the ξ* values for various identified particles measured at LEP with the prediction of the Modified Leading Logarithm Approximation with Local Parton Hadron Duality model has been performed. The measured ξ* position as a function of the hadron mass, after corrections due to particle decays, is in agreement with the model calculation.

Abstract: K0SK0S correlations have been studied in a sample of 717 511 hadronic events collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP during 1992. An enhancement is found in the production of pairs of K0S of similar momenta, as compared with a Monte Carlo simulated reference sample. The measured values for the strength of the correlation and the radius of the emitting source of kaons are λ = 1.13 ± 0.54 (stat) ± 0.23 (syst) and r = 0.90 ± 0.19 (stat) ± 0.10 (syst) fm. This enhancement is consistent with the hypothesis that K0SK0S pairs display an enhancement, regardless of whether they come from a K0K0 or from a K0K0 (K0K0) system.

Abstract: The lifetime of the tau lepton has been measured by two independent methods using a silicon microvertex detector installed in the DELPHI detector. The signed impact parameter distribution of the one prong decays yielded a lifetime of ττ = 321 ± 36 (stat.) ± 16 (syst.) fs, while the decay length distribution of three prong decays gave the result ττ = 310 ± 31 (stat.) ± 9 (syst.) fs. The final value of the combined result was ττ = 314 ± 25 fs. The ratio of the Fermi coupling constant from tau decay relative to that from muon decay was found to be 0.95 ± 0.04, compatible with the hypothesis of lepton universality., 0, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract: Muon identification in experiments with BEBC is obtained by a combination of two planes of multiwire proportional chambers and a hadron absorber of iron (thickness up to 210 cm). The detector planes cover 18 and 150 m2, respectively, and contain some 85000 sense wires and 20000 electronic channels. This system has successfully operated in v and v experiments, the main part of it for a year. Under most severe background conditions up to 600 particles were registered in a 2 ms beam spill. The performance of the chambers, the fast electronics and the on-line data handling system is described. Ar/CO2 mixtures have proved to be very reliable. A short account is given on the next improvement stage.

Abstract: For the identification of muons behind the Big European Bubble Chamber (BEBC) a detector wall of 6 m × 25 m is required. We describe the construction of the wire chambers, the electronics and the performance of the first chambers. The 50 modular 3 m × 1 m chambers contain 75 000 wires and 10 000 cathode strips, grouped into 20 000 electronic channels to give a variable space resolution. Geometrical acceptance is maximized by the suppression of support lines and spacers. The electronics can buffer up to 1023 events without dead time losses and without limitation on the number of hits per event. Ar/CO2 mixtures have given good results.

Abstract: Track sensitivity to minimum ionising particles has been demonstrated in liquid hydrogen using only an intense ultrasonic field. Carefully designed transducer systems are shown to be capable of producing pressure amplitudes >;2.8 atm in a standing wave system in liquid hydrogen. The growth of bubbles to visible size (0.1 mm) in less than 0.2 ms, and their collapse in less than 15 ms, indicates that rapid cycling rates of 50–100 pulses per second may be feasible with this technique.

Abstract: Tracks from ionizing particles in liquid helium have been obtained at CERN using pulsed ultrasonic fields in the frequency range 100–400 kHz [R. C. A. Brown, H. J. Hilke, and A. H. Rogers, Nature 220, 1177–1178 (1968)]. However, with liquid hydrogen, ultrasonic techniques have so far only produced tracks when supplemented by some piston‐produced expansion of the liquid [R. C. A. Brown, G. Harigel, and H. J. Hilke, Nucl. Instrum. Methods 82, 327–330 (1970)]. Experiments to define the optimum conditions for bubble growth and recompression in liquid helium have shown that a liquid‐helium ultrasonic bubble chamber should be able to achieve a repetition rate of 100 Hz. Current developments are intended to produce a fast‐cycling hydrogen bubble chamber sensitized purely by ultrasonic waves. A sound pressure amplitude of about 3 atm is required to do this, whereas only about 0.3 atm is needed for liquid helium.
