1. Timelines for returning to physical activity following pediatric spinal surgery: recommendations from the literature and preliminary data

Abstract

Abstract Objective Participation in physical activity and sports is known to have positive implications for physical health, and for social and emotional wellbeing of children. Following corrective spinal surgery for scoliosis, the timeline for the return to activities and sports varies from surgeon to surgeon and from location to location, and return to activities can be limited due to pain, fear, and decreased flexibility. It is critical that patients know best-practice guidelines, and it is equally critical that medical professionals know whether their patients are following those guidelines. This paper includes a summary of recommendations published in the literature, and a pilot study to address a gap in the literature on determining how long, post-surgery, adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis waited before returning to various self-care and physical activities, and what factors influenced return to activities. We used a mixed-method approach that involved two phases: a questionnaire (n = 8), and subsequent interviews of some participants (n = 3). Participants were ages 14–17 (M = 15.4) and had had posterior instrumentation and fusion for scoliosis in the past 2 years. Results Some patients were cautious about return to activities, either because of emotional or medical reasons. However, in many instances, participants returned to physical activities earlier than was recommended, primarily for emotional and social reasons.

2. Meeting the Needs of Parents of Children With Scoliosis: A Qualitative Descriptive Study

Abstract

Needs of parents with children with scoliosis are complex and depend on their child’s treatments. The purpose of this study was to identify needs of parents with children with scoliosis. This qualitative description involved interviews with parents of children at various stages of treatment. A convenience, then purposeful sample of 16 parents (12 mothers, two fathers, and two stepfathers) was interviewed; interviews were transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis. Parents’ needs included: Needing reliable medical information; Desiring information on complementary treatments; Wanting help in supporting and advocating for their child; Needing to protect the child and family; and Seeking connection and support. Although many parents’ needs are being met, this study recommends a nursing role aimed at providing parents with reliable medical information, discussing alternative treatments, assisting parents in their role of supporting their child, helping parents in their advocacy efforts, and referring parents to appropriate connections.

Abstract

The performance of zero-gap CO2 electrolysis (CO2E) is significantly influenced by the membrane’s chemical structure and physical properties due to its effects on the local reaction environment and water/ion transport. Radiation-grafted anion-exchange membranes (RG-AEM) have demonstrated high ionic conductivity and durability, making them a promising alternative for CO2E. These membranes were fabricated using two different thicknesses of ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene polymer substrates (25 and 50 μm) and three different headgroup chemistries: benzyl-trimethylammonium, benzyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium, and benzyl-N-methylpiperidinium (MPIP). Our membrane characterization and testing in zero-gap cells over Ag electrocatalysts under commercially relevant conditions showed correlations between the water uptake, ionic conductivity, hydration, and cationic-head groups with the CO2E efficiency. The thinner 25 μm-based AEM with the MPIP-headgroup (ion-exchange capacities of 2.1 ± 0.1 mmol g-1) provided balanced in situ test characteristics with lower cell potentials, high CO selectivity, reduced liquid product crossover, and enhanced water management while maintaining stable operation compared to the commercial AEMs. The CO2 electrolyzer with an MPIP-AEM operated for over 200 h at 150 mA cm-2 with CO selectivities up to 80% and low cell potentials (around 3.1 V) while also demonstrating high conductivities and chemical stability during performance at elevated temperatures (above 60 °C).

Abstract

Radiation-grafted anion-exchange membranes (RG-AEM) are being developed to evaluate a range of chemistries that have relevance to a variety of electrochemical applications including reverse electrodialysis (RED) salinity gradient power. RG-AEMs are typically fabricated using an electron-beam activated (peroxidated) polymer substrate film. These activated films are first grafted with a monomer, such as vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC) and then reacted with a variety of tertiary amines to yield the desired RG-AEMs. The amination process forms covalently bound quaternary ammonium (QA) head-groups that allow the RG-AEMs to conduct anions such as Cl−. RG-AEMs are of interest as they exhibit high conductivities (100 mS cm−1 at elevated temperatures when containing Cl− anions). However, the current generation of RG-AEMs have two main Achilles' heels: (1) they exhibit low permselectivities; and (2) they exhibit a high degree of swelling in water. Introducing covalent crosslinking into ion-exchange membranes is a well-known strategy to overcome these issues but it often comes with a price – a significantly lowered conductivity (raised in situ resistance). Therefore, the level of crosslinking must be carefully optimised. RG-AEMs can be primarily crosslinked using two methods: (1) introduction of a divinyl monomer into the monomer mixture used during grafting; or (2) introduction of a diamine agent into the amination process. This study looks into both methods where either divinylbenzene (DVB) is added into the grafting mixture or N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylhexane-1,6-diamine (TMHDA) is added into the amination mixture. We show that on the balance of two application-relevant properties (resistances in aqueous NaCl (0.5 mol dm−3) solution and permselectivity), the diamine crosslinking method is the most effective for RG-AEMs being used in RED cells.

9. Radiation-grafted cation-exchange membranes: an initial ex situ feasibility study into their potential use in reverse electrodialysis

Abstract

A variety of radiation-grafted cation-exchange membranes (RG-CEM) were synthesised, using a high-dose rate electron-beam peroxidation method, for an initial evaluation of their applicability to reverse electrodialysis cells (RED, a type of salinity gradient “blue” energy). The RG-CEMs were adequately conductive (to Na+ cations) but without the incorporation of crosslinking co-monomers, the permselectivities were too low (≤80%). In contrast, when ETFE-based RG-CEMs were synthesised with incorporation of 10% mol bis(vinylphenyl)ethane (BVPE) crosslinking co-monomer into the styrene-containing grafting mixture, permselectivities of >90% were obtained without a significant decrease in conductivity. The use of BVPE in the grafting mixture also resulted in the RG-CEMs exhibiting enhanced ion-exchange capacities without any increase in water uptakes (cf. uncrosslinked variants). In contrast, the use of less flexible divinylbenzene crosslinker led to prohibitively large decreases in RG-CEM conductivity. This study highlights that the future development of both radiation-grafted cation-exchange and anion-exchange membranes for RED (and other electrodialysis applications) should utilise flexible crosslinkers (such as BVPE) to ensure adequate permselectivities.

Abstract

A healthy 11-year-old male develops fear of choking secondary to progressive dysphagia that began in early childhood. No organic cause is found, and the patient is diagnosed with psychiatric oral aversion. The child is eventually transferred to a psychiatric facility, where a month later he has a possible aspiration event and is transferred to the local emergency room for respiratory distress before being admitted to the intensive care unit. Workup is notable for abnormal findings on brain imaging, and the diagnosis of Alexander's disease is made. This case highlights the importance of complete history-taking and examinations in pediatric patients.

Abstract

Needs of parents with children with scoliosis are complex and depend on their child’s treatments. The purpose of this study was to identify needs of parents with children with scoliosis. This qualitative description involved interviews with parents of children at various stages of treatment. A convenience, then purposeful sample of 16 parents (12 mothers, two fathers, and two stepfathers) was interviewed; interviews were transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis. Parents’ needs included: Needing reliable medical information; Desiring information on complementary treatments; Wanting help in supporting and advocating for their child; Needing to protect the child and family; and Seeking connection and support. Although many parents’ needs are being met, this study recommends a nursing role aimed at providing parents with reliable medical information, discussing alternative treatments, assisting parents in their role of supporting their child, helping parents in their advocacy efforts, and referring parents to appropriate connections.

Abstract

The effect of vacuum exposure on latent fingerprint chemistry has been evaluated. Fingerprints were analysed using a quartz crystal microbalance to measure changes in mass, gas chromatography mass spectrometry to measure changes in lipid composition and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) to determine changes in the content of water, fatty acids and their esters after exposure to vacuum. The results are compared with samples aged under ambient conditions. It was found that fingerprints lose around 26% of their mass when exposed to vacuum conditions, equivalent to around 5 weeks ageing under ambient conditions. Further exposure to vacuum causes a significant reduction in the lipid composition of a fingerprint, in particular with the loss of tetradecanoic and pentadecanoic acid, that was not observed in ambient aged samples. There are therefore implications for sequence in which fingerprint development procedures (for example vacuum metal deposition) are carried out, as well as the use of vacuum based methods such as secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation (MALDI) in the study of fingerprint chemistry.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To characterize racial and ethnic disparities in the evaluation and reporting of suspected abusive head trauma (AHT) across the 18 participating sites of the Pediatric Brain Injury Research Network (PediBIRN). We hypothesized that such disparities would be confirmed at multiple sites and occur more frequently in patients with a lower risk for AHT. STUDY DESIGN: Aggregate and site-specific analysis of the cross-sectional PediBIRN dataset, comparing AHT evaluation and reporting frequencies in subpopulations of white/non-Hispanic and minority race/ethnicity patients with lower vs higher risk for AHT. RESULTS: In the PediBIRN study sample of 500 young, acutely head-injured patients hospitalized for intensive care, minority race/ethnicity patients (n = 229) were more frequently evaluated (P < .001; aOR, 2.2) and reported (P = .001; aOR, 1.9) for suspected AHT than white/non-Hispanic patients (n = 271). These disparities occurred almost exclusively in lower risk patients, including those ultimately categorized as non-AHT (P = .001 [aOR, 2.4] and P = .003 [aOR, 2.1]) or with an estimated AHT probability of ≤25% (P < .001 [aOR, 4.1] and P < .001 [aOR, 2.8]). Similar site-specific analyses revealed that these results reflected more extreme disparities at only 2 of 18 sites, and were not explained by local confounders. CONCLUSION: Significant race/ethnicity-based disparities in AHT evaluation and reporting were observed at only 2 of 18 sites and occurred almost exclusively in lower risk patients. In the absence of local confounders, these disparities likely represent the impact of local physicians’ implicit bias.

Abstract

We report the STAR measurement of ϕ meson production in Au + Au and p + p collisions at s N N = 200 GeV . Using the event mixing technique, the ϕ spectra and yields are obtained at mid-rapidity for five centrality bins in Au + Au collisions and for non-singly-diffractive p + p collisions. It is found that the ϕ transverse momentum distributions from Au + Au collisions are better fitted with a single-exponential while the p + p spectrum is better described by a double-exponential distribution. The measured nuclear modification factors indicate that ϕ production in central Au + Au collisions is suppressed relative to peripheral collisions when scaled by the number of binary collisions ( 〈 N bin 〉 ) . The systematics of 〈 p t 〉 versus centrality and the constant ϕ / K − ratio versus beam species, centrality, and collision energy rule out kaon coalescence as the dominant mechanism for ϕ production.

Abstract

Animal learning researchers have argued that one example of a linearly nonseparable problem is negative patterning, and therefore they have used more complicated multilayer networks to study this kind of discriminant learning. However, it is shown in this paper that previous attempts to deWne negative patterning problems to artiWcial neural networks have speciWed the problem in such a way that it is much simpler than intended. The simulations described in this paper correct this problem by adding a “null” pattern to the training sets to make negative patterning problems truly nonseparable, and thus requiring a more complicated network than a perceptron. We show that with the elaborated training set, a hybrid multilayer network that treats reinforced patterns diVerently than nonreinforced patterns generates results more similar to those observed by Dalamater, Sosa, and Katz in animal experiments than do traditional multilayer networks.

Abstract

An overview of the strangeness measurements made by the STAR collaboration at RHIC for Au-Au collisions at √s NN = 130 and 200 GeV plus p-p collisions at √s NN = 200 GeV is presented. A wealth of information has been generated on the kinematics and scale of strange particle production by this experiment. When viewed in combination a picture emerges of particles demonstrating a surprisingly high degree of collective motion, suggestive of strong internal pressure within the source which builds up rapidly. The non-resonance yields are consistent with statistical hadron formation. Although there appears to be a rapid decoupling of the source, resonance particle measurements show signs of rescattering during the hadronic phase. Meanwhile the observed suppression of high momentum probes and their large azimuthal asymmetry indicate that this hot dense matter has significant interactions with particles moving through it.

Abstract

Values of the ratios in the mid-rapidity yields of Λ / Λ =0.71±0.01( stat. )±0.04( sys. ) , Ξ + / Ξ − =0.83±0.04( stat. )±0.05( sys. ) , Ω + / Ω − =0.95±0.15( stat. )±0.05( sys. ) and K + /K − =1.092±0.023(combined) were obtained in central s NN =130 GeV Au+Au collisions using the STAR detector. The ratios indicate that a fraction of the net-baryon number from the initial system is present in the excess of hyperons over antihyperons at mid-rapidity. The trend in the progression of the baryon ratios, with increasing strange quark content, is similar to that observed in heavy-ion collisions at lower energies. The value of these ratios may be related to the charged kaon ratio in the framework of simple quark-counting and thermal models.

21. Select Nontarget Arthropod Abundance in Transgenic and Nontransgenic Field Crops in Ohio

Abstract

Nontarget arthropod populations were monitored in both transgenic and nontransgenic corn and soybean fields in western and central Ohio. A total of 24 fields, 12 corn and 12 soybean, were inspected weekly from late June through mid August. Half of the cornfields were Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) hybrids and half of the soybean fields were Roundup Ready (RR). Sweep net samples in soybean fields and unbaited Pherocon AM yellow sticky traps in both soybean and cornfields were used to collect nontarget arthropods. Soil samples were also taken from all 24 fields to compare soil mite populations. A select group of 15 readily identifiable arthropods composed mainly of beneficial insects commonly found in field crops, were recorded in weekly sweep net and sticky trap samples for later analysis. Sweep net data from soybean fields revealed no significant differences in nontarget arthropods. Yellow sticky trap data from soybean and corn fields found significantly more green lacewing adults (Chrysopa spp.) in six pooled non-RR soybean fields, significantly more rove beetles in one non-Bt cornfield, and significantly more Orius spp. in one Bt cornfield. There were also significantly more soil inhabiting mites at one non-RR soybean field. Based on the abundance of these arthropod populations in paired transgenic and nontransgenic fields, few negative effects on the 15 nontarget arthropods selected can be directly associated with transgenic soybean and corn crops in Ohio.

Abstract

The Solenoidal Tracker At RHIC-Silicon Vertex Tracker (STAR-SVT) is a three barrel microvertex detector based upon silicon drift detector technology. As designed for the STAR-SVT, silicon drift detectors (SDDs) are capable of providing unambiguous two-dimensional hit position measurements with resolutions on the order of 20 μm in each coordinate. Achievement of such resolutions, particularly in the drift direction coordinate, depends upon certain characteristics of silicon and drift detector geometry that are uniquely critical for silicon drift detectors hit measurements. Here we describe features of the design of the STAR-SVT SDDs and the front-end electronics that are motivated by such characteristics.

Abstract

The STAR detector sits in a high radiation area when operating normally; therefore it was necessary to develop a robust system to remotely control all hardware. The STAR hardware controls system monitors and controls approximately 14,000 parameters in the STAR detector. Voltages, currents, temperatures, and other parameters are monitored. Effort has been minimized by the adoption of experiment-wide standards and the use of pre-packaged software tools. The system is based on the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS) [1] . VME processors communicate with subsystem-based sensors over a variety of field busses, with High-level Data Link Control (HDLC) being the most prevalent. Other features of the system include interfaces to accelerator and magnet control systems, a web-based archiver, and C++-based communication between STAR online, run control and hardware controls and their associated databases. The system has been designed for easy expansion as new detector elements are installed in STAR.

Abstract

Data from the first physics run at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory from the STAR experiment have been analyzed using three-pion correlations to study whether pions are emitted independently at freezeout. We have made a high-statistics measurement of the three-pion correlation function and calculated the normalized three-particle correlator to obtain a quantitative measurement of the degree of chaoticity in the freeze-out environment.

Abstract

Field experiments were conducted to investigate the attractiveness of fish bones to predatory ants in a maize agroecosystem. The fish bones were applied crushed in shallow furrows together with dry maize stalks, or broadcast on the soil surface at 3 application rates: 0, 40 and 80 kg/ha; subsequent reduction in termite attack on maize plants was then assessed. Burying the fish bone powder caused higher ant nesting (102–78 %) than surface broadcasting (122–39 %). Attractiveness of the fish bones and the predatory efficiency of the ants against termites in maize was also highest with a dose of 80 kg/ha (1.0 kg/plot) causing higher nesting of ants (>90 %) and 54 % lower termite damage to maize plants compared to control plots. Dose responses indicated significant relationships between amount of fish bone powder applied and termite activity and also between termite damage and maize yield. The mechanism by which the ants are able to protect maize against termite damage may be twofold: direct kill as a result of their predatory action and termite avoidance of maize plants with ant nests. Further studies are required to assess the potential benefits of an integrated use of this technique with other non-chemical options for termite control in maize, such as intercropping.

Abstract

The STAR detector has made a variety of measurements of strange and other hadronic species in Au+Au collisions at s N N = 130 GeV. A comparison of kaon and pion production enables an examination of the systematics of strangeness production with energy by comparing them to lower energy collisions. Anti-baryon to baryon ratios indicate a much reduced net-baryon density and transverse momentum spectra show that a picture of transverse expansion seems appropriate.

Abstract

Studies were conducted in two districts of eastern Uganda from 1997 to 1999 to introduce and monitor the establishment of an exotic parasitoid, Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), for the control of the stemborer Chilo Partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), and also to determine the stemborer species complex in maize and sorghum. The study confirmed the presence of four important stemborers, two pyralids Ch. partellus and Eldana saccharina Walker and two noctuids, Busseola fusca Fuller and Sesamia calamistis Hampson. Chilo Partellus was dominant, constituting 53-88% of stemborers fourd followed by B. fusca at 8–37 %. The most abundant local parasitoid was the larval parasitoid Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). The pupal parasitoids Pediobius furvus Gahan (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) and Dentichasmias busseolae Heinrich (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) were also recorded. Parasitism of Co. sesamiae on Ch. partellus ranged between 0 and 13.1 %. The introduced Co. flavipes was recovered from all sites in four consecutive seasons (between 1998 and 1999) causing parasitism of between 4 and 32.9 % on Ch. partellus. Cotesia flavipes was also recovered from the indigenous stemborers B. fusca and S. calamistis. This study indicates that Co. flavipes has established in eastern Uganda.

Abstract

Glandular-haired alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) cultivars developed for resistance to potato leafhopper [Empoasca fabae Harris] (PLH) have not been evaluated across a wide geographic area. Our objective was to evaluate forage growth, yield, insect damage, and stand density of glandular-haired and standard alfalfa cultivars with and without insecticide control of naturally occurring PLH infestations across the Midwest USA. Nine glandular-haired and five standard cultivars were evaluated from 1996 to 1998 in field experiments in Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Scheduled insecticide applications increased total yield of all cultivars, the response declining with increasing latitude (yield advantage = 32.7 - 0.72 x latitude; r 2 = 0.86, P = 0.05). Depending on location, total yield loss due to PLH damage ranged from 5 to 23% for the standard cultivars and 1 to 10% for the glandular-haired, commercially released cultivars (GR). Yield loss from PLH feeding in the GR cultivars was less than half of that observed in standard cultivars in environments where PLH stress was high. The GR cultivars yielded 1.1 Mg ha -1 more per year on average than the standard cultivars without insecticide under high PLH stress in Ohio and Indiana. Potato leafhopper nymph densities were lower in glandular-haired cultivars than in standard cultivars. Cultivars had similar yield when treated with insecticide or when PLH populations were low. Glandular-haired alfalfa cultivars were not immune to PLH damage; however, they can substantially reduce yield losses caused by this pest and provide a useful new tool for integrated pest management strategies.

Silicon drift detectors provide unambiguous two-dimensional position information for charged particle detection with a single detector layer. A large area silicon drift detector was developed for the inner tracking detector of the STAR experiment at RHIC. In this paper, we discuss the lessons learned and the future prospects of this technology.

Abstract

Elliptic flow from nuclear collisions is a hadronic observable sensitive to the early stages of system evolution. We report first results on elliptic flow of charged particles at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at √(sNN) = 130 GeV using the STAR Time Projection Chamber at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The elliptic flow signal, v₂, averaged over transverse momentum, reaches values of about 6% for relatively peripheral collisions and decreases for the more central collisions. This can be interpreted as the observation of a higher degree of thermalization than at lower collision energies. Pseudorapidity and transverse momentum dependence of elliptic flow are also presented.

Abstract

Silicon drift detectors provide unambiguous two-dimensional position information for charged particle detection in a single detector layer. Like most other semi-conductor technologies, Silicon drift detectors are presently used in vertexing detectors. By taking into account, the drastic reduction in channel count compared to other silicon-based devices this specific technology is also well suited for large coverage tracking detectors. The first larger area Silicon Drift Tracker (6.3 cm ×6.3 cm ) was developed as the inner tracking detector (SVT) of the STAR experiment at the RHIC collider. Advantages and limitations of this detector will be discussed. Recent results of detector performance based on an application in a heavy ion fixed target experiment at the BNL-AGS (E896) are presented.

Abstract

Large (6.3/spl times/6.3 cm/sup 2/) linear silicon drift detectors were developed for use in the SVT, the inner tracking detector of the STAR experiment at the RHIC Collider. The concern of this paper is to estimate the effects of neutron and proton radiation damage to these devices and associated electronics. Detectors and their associated electronics were irradiated with 10/sup 11/-10/sup 12//cm/sup 2/, 1 MeV equivalent neutrons and 10/sup 10/-10/sup 12//cm/sup 2/, 24 GeV protons. I-V and C-V characteristics of diode test structures were used to determine depletion voltages, lifetimes, and reverse bias values. Measurements of the voltage and drift linearity with laser injection show the effects of irradiation on the detector performance. Measurements of noise levels show the effects of irradiation on the front-end electronics.

Abstract

The south-western Atlantic region, 30–46°S, 35–55°W is noted for the confluence of the warm Brazil Current and the cold Falkland Current, as well as the eddies created from the two systems. Previous studies of the Brazil-Falkland Current confluence have concentrated on the formation of eddies south of 35°S. However, in situ measurements and TOPEX/POSEIDON imagery of the region reveal eddies developing as far north as 32°S. These features are not evident in the coincident AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) imagery. In this study, the origin of the eddies identified are discussed with reference to the contemporary in situ measurements of temperature and salinity. Using the combination of satellite imagery and in situ data, it can be determined that the surface waters of the eddies north of 36°S are influenced by water from an estuarine source. TOPEX imagery enables the movements and variability of the regions water masses: estuarine outflow, Falkland and Brazil currents, to be monitored synoptically. The combination of satellite imagery and the higher resolution of in situ AMT measurements enables these water masses to be better identified.

Abstract

Fluorine-containing siloxane oligomers were made from bis(aminopropyl)tetramethyldisiloxane and trimethyltris(trifluoropropyl)cyclotrisiloxane. These materials were characterized by IR spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography, nonaqueous colorimetric end group titration, and 1H-NMR. The end groups of one oligomer were chemically modified for an increased NMR signal for molecular weight determination. The cyclic trimeric siloxane starting material was additionally studied via 13C-, 29Si-, and 19F-NMR. Abstract

Objective To examine the association between previous radiation exposure and idiopathic perifoveal telangiectasis (IPT). Design A multicentered, individually matched, case-control study design was used. Participants/controls Sixty-five case subjects were matched with 175 control subjects. Individuals with unequivocal evidence of angiographically confirmed IPT were included as cases. Control subjects were matched for center, age, and gender. Main outcome measure The main exposures of interest were a history of therapeutic head or neck irradiation and environmental radiation exposure. Methods A standardized questionnaire was administered to case and control subjects. Data were collected for the main exposures of interest as well as pertinent covariates. Conditional logistic regression was used to evaluate therapeutic and environmental radiation as risks for IPT. Results On univariate analysis, head or neck irradiation was associated with IPT (odds ratios [OR] = 4.15, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.30–13.24). While controlling for diabetes and family history of diabetes, IPT was found to be associated with both head or neck irradiation (OR = 4.06, 95% CI = 1.20–13.76) and with environmental irradiation (OR = 6.73, 95% CI = 1.06–42.74). Conclusions This study presents a previously unreported association between prior radiation exposure and IPT.

Abstract

The STAR Time Projection Chamber was successfully operated during the first RHIC run in 2000. Most of the STAR contributions reported in these proceedings are based on the analysis of data from the TPC. In this article, we show that the performance achieved by the TPC, in terms of track reconstruction, position resolution, and particle identification are well suited for measuring precise and reliable physics observables.

Abstract

A behavioral change in some western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, populations is threatening the effectiveness of crop rotation, a successful management strategy for controlling this pest. We created a simple meteorological and behavioral model that can be used to predict the spread of the beetle infesting soybean, Glycine max (L.), throughout the Midwest. We used data collected in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio to create maps of observations to evaluate the model. We displayed data on the maps using thresholds of 10, 20, and 40 western corn rootworm beetles per 100 sweeps. Counts above a threshold represent populations searching for plants other than corn, Zea mays L., and adapted to the soybean–corn rotation. According to our model, the population adapted to soybean spreads 10–30 km per year depending on the directions of the prevailing storms and winds. The model underestimates the observed spread to the south. The model fits the Illinois data best when a threshold of 10 adults per 100 sweeps is used to visualize data and test the model. The model fits the Michigan data better with a threshold of 20 beetles, but is insensitive to the visualization and evaluation threshold for other areas. Model results support the hypothesis that the origin of the population of western corn rootworm infesting soybean is Ford County, IL. We predict that populations of western corn rootworm will be infesting soybean in much of Ohio, lower Michigan, and southern Wisconsin during the next 5 yr and eastern Iowa within the next 10 yr.

Abstract

The Ways of Coping Questionnaire (Folkman & Lazarus, 1988) yields eight scales which purport to measure eight unique coping styles. Using Multi-Dimensional Scaling (MDS) this study seeks to find the underlying dimensional structure of the Ways of Coping Questionnaire, using three samples: (1) Folkman and Lazarus' normative sample (1988, N = 150), (2) a Canadian normative sample (N = 385; Sinha, Willson, Madhukar, & Watson, unpublished manuscript), (3) an East Indian sample (N = 199; Sinha et al. , unpublished manuscript). Analysis yields one interpretable dimension which appears to be effective/ineffective coping strategies. To provide a more rigorous comparison, Spearman's rank-order correlations of the MDS solutions were examined, and confirmatory factor analysis was performed on the eight scales. Some cultural differences are noted between the Canadian normal sample and the Indian sample: although the effective/ineffective dimension is supported across cultures, rank-ordering of the MDS loadings of the eight scales shows that there is only a small correlation between the loadings of these two samples.

Abstract

The dynamic wetting behavior of methyl- and hydroxyl-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) with a range of molecular weights and viscosities is discussed. Direct imaging of the fluid/air interface within 20 μm of the contact line was used to probe this behavior. Models which account for the unique hydrodynamics near a moving contact line accurately describe the measured interface shapes. Our measurements provide a geometry-independent characterization of the dynamic contact angle and thus may be transferred to any macroscopic geometry. The dynamic wetting behavior is more sensitive to the chain termination chemistry than to the variations in molecular weight and viscosity. Implications for the unique hydrodynamics occurring near the contact line and governing the spreading are explored.

Abstract

The recent report by Smith and Smith1 concerning fibrinolytic activity in the serum from pre-eclamptic and eclamptic patients and its absence in those with hypertensive disease with a superimposed pregnancy, suggests that there is a specific substance in the blood of the former groups which may be produced as a result of the toxemia. Should this prove to be true itwould give a definite indication as to the direction toward which future research concerning the etiology of these conditions should be pointed and might well be utilized as a diagnostic test in certain obscure cases in which differentiation between the 2 conditions could not easily be made. Abstract

The primary aim of the present in vitro studies was to investigate fluoride as an inhibitor of citric acid-mediated demineralization of human enamel and promoter of lesion repair using a combination of white light interferometry, scanning electron microscopy, and microindentation. Secondary aims included investigation of the importance of brushing on bulk tissue loss, and comparison of the relative efficacy of commercially available toothpastes on inhibiting enamel surface softening and rehardening of incipient erosive lesions.Resin-mounted polished enamel specimens were prepared from extracted human molars and pre-molars. Mean surface roughness (Sa) and bulk tissue loss following exposure to an erosive challenge, or an erosive challenge plus brushing were investigated using a MicroXAM ADE PhaseShift white light interferometer. Surface morphology was determined using a Zeiss Evo 50 scanning electron microscope (SEM). The utility of fluoride-based treatments to protect against subsequent acid demineralization and to promote remineralization of pre-formed incipient lesions was determined using microindentation-based enamel surface softening and enamel lesion rehardening models.Treating human enamel specimens with Sensodyne Pronamel conferred a clear protective benefit against a subsequent 300-second citric acid challenge as evidenced by the interferometry and SEM data. The increase in Sa and bulk tissue loss caused by an erosive challenge followed by brushing was markedly reduced by pre-treatment with sodium fluoride (NaF) in a concentration-dependent manner. Sensodyne Pronamel statistically outperformed Colgate Sensitive Enamel Protect both in the enamel surface softening model and lesion rehardening model, and conferred statistically superior enamel fluoride uptake. Treatment of erosive lesions with Sensodyne Pronamel resulted in statistically superior rehardening versus two Crest Pro-Health formulations containing stannous fluoride (SnF2) and sodium hexametaphosphate (NaHMP); the latter did not differ significantly from the fluoride-free negative control paste. Sensodyne Pronamel exhibited statistically significant superiority in a human saliva-based lesion rehardening model compared to Zendium Sensitive containing nominally comparable concentrations of NaF, as well as Colgate Sensitive and Colgate Sensitive Multi Protection containing sodium monofluorophosphate (NaMFP).The utility of NaF, whether delivered from simple solution or toothpaste, to reduce citric acid-mediated surface roughening and bulk tissue loss has been clearly demonstrated. The effectiveness of Sensodyne Pronamel as an anti-erosion toothpaste has also been demonstrated in various microhardness models. Crest Pro-Health toothpastes containing SnF2 and NaHMP were not statistically differentiable from a fluoride-free control paste in the lesion rehardening model. The latter result indicates that the benefit of fluoride to promote mineral formation is outweighed by the effect of NaHMP as a mineralization inhibitor in this model.

49. Effects of Tillage and Prior Crop on the Incidence of Five Key Pests on Ohio Corn

Pest management records representing a decade of field scouting observations of field corn in two Ohio counties were analyzed to determine the relative incidence of black cutworm, Agrotis ipsilon (Hufnagel), stalk borer, Papaipema nebris (Guenee), armyworm, Pseudaletia unipuncta (Haworth), slugs, and European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hubner) in relation to tillage practices and prior crop. The incidence of black cutworm, stalk borer, armyworm, and slug infestations exceeding a potential action threshold increased as tillage was reduced, especially in no-tillage corn. The incidence of first-brood European corn borer infestations was less in no-tillage compared with that of either conventional or reduced tillage corn. Prior crop history did not significantly influence the relative incidence of black cutworm, stalk borer, or slugs on corn, including that planted no-till. Armyworm infestations exceeding the potential action threshold were primarily limited to corn sites planted no-tillage into a grassy prior crop. The incidence of European corn borer was greater in continuous corn than in corn following other crops.

50. Distribution of Heterodera glycines in Ohio

Abstract

A 4-year systematic survey for the presence of soybean cyst nematode Heterodera glycines in Ohio soybean fields was initiated in 1992. A total of 667 soybean fields in 63 counties was sampled. Heterodera glycines was present in 91 fields in 40 counties based on soil samples collected, and in one field in each of three additional counties based on soil samples submitted to the Plant and Pest Diagnostic Clinic or through a preliminary survey conducted in 1991. Soybean hectarage in the 43 counties with at least one field known to be infested with H. glycines accounts for 79% of the total Ohio soybean production area. Eight races of H. glycines were identified in 33 samples from 18 counties. The most common was race 3, identified in 15 samples; others were races 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 10, and 14.
