A 2 cm long necrotic segment was resected from the left half of the proximal cervical trachea in a 7–year–old Dachshund. Tracheal reconstruction was provided by an onlay graft of knitted polypropylene mesh. The only sequel noted was an exercise–induced cough for the first 2 post–operative weeks. To date (3 months after surgery) there is no evidence of tracheal stenosis, graft rejection or tracheal collapse at the surgical site and normal appearing epithelium is covering the entire graft. Resume. On a reseque un segment necrotique de 2 cms de la moitie gauche de la trachee proxirnale cervicale, chez un Dachshund de 7 ans. Une greffe appliquee de tricot de poly-propylene a fourni la reconstruction tracheale. Les seules sequelles notees ont ete une toux induite par exercise pendant les deux premieres semaines postoperatoires. Jusqu'ici (3 mois apres chirurgie) il n'y a aucune evidence de stenose tracheale, de rejection de la greffe ou de collapsus tracheal a l'endrout chirurgique et l'epithelium normal qui apparait couvre la greffe entiere. Zusammenfassung. Ein 2 cm langes abgestorbenes Segmentum von der linken Halfte der proximalen zervikalen Trachea in einem 7 jahrigen Dachshund wurde reseziert. Tracheale Rekonstruktion wurde durch ein aufgelegtes Transplantat von gestricktem Polypropylen-Netzgewebe beschaffen. Die einzige Folgeerscheinung die man feststellte, war ein Husten in den ersten zwei postoperativen Wochen, der durch Ubung und Auslauf veranlasst war. Bis jetzt (3 Monate nach der Operation) sind keine Anzeichen von trachealer Verengung, Transplantatab-weisung oder trachealem Kollaps an der operierten Stelle bemerkt worden und normal erscheinendes Epithelium uberdeckt das ganze Transplantat.

INTRODUCTION Dixon and Wilkinson (1957) described a surgical procedure for exteriorization of the ureteral openings of the hen, and this procedure was used in our laboratory (MacRae et al., 1960). The procedure was later modified by Ainsworth (1965). In our hands, however, the procedure of Ainsworth was associated with several serious sequelae. These included fistulation of the cloaca, due to incomplete union of the mucosa of the cloaca with the tissue of the dorsal lip of the vent, and repeated wound dehiscence of the cloacal incision. The present communication describes modifications which were found adequate to overcome these limitations. PROCEDURE Anesthesia. A liquid diet for oral use has been administered to selected small animal cases over the past 18 months. This diet provides the total daily needs of the patient and from this preliminary study it is evident that it has a definitive role in small animal therapeutics. Resume. Ce regime pourvoit aux besoins entiers quotidiens du malade et d'apres cette etude preliminaire, il est evident qu'il a un role defini dans la therapie des petits animaux. Zusammenfassung. In den letzten 18 Monaten wurde an auserwahlten Fallen von Kleintieren eine durch den Mund bezogene, flussige Nahrung erteilt. Diese Nahrung enthalt den gesammten Nahrungsstoff des Patientens taglichen Bedarf und von preliminaren Beobachtungen ist zu schliessen, dass diese Nahrung durchaus eine bestimmte Rolle, in der Therapeutik von Kleintieren, spielt.

Isolated livers from fed rats were perfused for 1 h with a medium consisting of Krebs–Ringer bicarbonate buffer with added albumin and glucose. Rates of perfusate and bile flow, differences in [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and pH, and glucose and potassium efflux were measured. Rewarmed slices of liver taken before the surgical preparation and before the perfusion were found to be able to reverse a cation shift imposed by cold incubation. Slices of liver taken after one perfusion were not able to effect this expected cation transport. It is proposed that the perfusate used was not ideal as evidenced by the altered membrane function of slices after perfusion.

The ability of liver slices prepared from normal rats and from isolated perfused livers following a 1 h control perfusion to reverse a cold-imposed shift in cations when rewarmed was confirmed as a control parameter of rat liver tissue. Three hours after normal rats had received a standard dose of CCl4 via a gastric tube, a decreased ability for the membrane transport of sodium was found. The infusion of CCl4 directly into the perfusate line was shown to cause acute toxic damage in isolated livers. Further, at the end of the 1 h perfusion, the infusion of CCl4 was shown to result in an increased tissue sodium level and a decreased capacity for the membrane transport of sodium and potassium by slices. It is suggested that a generalized change in plasmalemma function, as evidenced in alterations in the membrane transport of cations and tissue cation level, may be an early manifestation of CCl4 hepatotoxicity.

Rewarmed slices of liver taken at the beginning of perfusion were found to be able to reverse a cation shift imposed by cold incubation. Slices of liver taken after 1 h of perfusion were not able to effect this cation shift unless red blood cells were included in the perfusate. It is proposed that noncellular perfusates containing metabolic substrates are not ideal for isolated rat liver perfusion studies as evidenced in the altered membrane transport capacity of slices after perfusion.

Recent evidence suggests an interrelationship between platelets, heparin, and the lipolytic enzyme, lipoprotein-lipase. It seems likely that heparin might influence platelet adherence through its activation of lipoprotein-lipase. The mode of activation of the enzyme by heparin may, therefore, be important clinically. In these experiments the enzyme responses to increasing doses of heparin have been measured in dogs. The mean enzyme responses were found to be directly related to the logarithm of the heparin dose.

Die Fliessgeschwindigkeit der Lymphe im ductus thoracicus und der Gehalt an Phospholipiden, Cholesterin und Triglyceriden wurde vor und nach akutem Blutverlust in anaesthesierten, splenektomierten Hunden bestimmt. Vor allem nach grossen Blutverlusten wurde eine starke Erhohung des Lipidgehaltes der Lymphe nachgewiesen.
