EBIT—for European Broadband Interconnection Trial—is a service proposed by several European Telecommunication Administrations to interconnect RACE (Research for Advanced Communications in Europe) Application Pilots. CEC may decide to broaden the service to other leading edge users needing a transnational networking infrastructure and requiring high bandwidth. The initial phase of the project will use existing switchend 2 Mbit/s bearer services based on satellite or terrestrial links, and will include studies to seek ways of introducing early services at 140 Mbit/s at acceptable costs. EBIT may offer the opportunity to build an European networking infrastructure supported by the Telecommunication Administrations. Two research communities-High Energy Physics and Aeronautics-having clear needs for transnational high bandwith connections have expressed an interest to use the EBIT services to complement their existing leased line networks. A feasibility study, sponsored by CEC DG XIII, is presently being carried out on behalf of EBIT by France Cables et Radio, a subsidiary of France Telecom.

We present results on a high statistics study of the nucleon structure functions F2(x, Q2) and R=σL/σT measured in deep inelastic scattering of muons on a deuterium target. The analysis is based on 8×105 events after all cuts, recorded at beam energies of 120, 200 and 280 GeV in the kinematic range 0.06⩽ × ⩽0.80 and 8GeV2⩽Q2⩽260GeV2. Scaling violations observed in the data are in agreement with predictions of perturbative QCD and allow to determine the QCD mass scale parameter Λ.

Data from deep inelastic scattering of 200 GeV muons on a carbon target with squared four-momentum transfer 52 GeV2≤Q2≤200 GeV2 were analysed in the region of the Bjorken variable close tox=1, which is the kinematic limit for scattering on a free nucleon. At this value ofx, the carbon structure function is found to beF2C≈1.2·10−4. Thex dependence of the structure function forx>0.8 is well described by an exponentialF2C∞exp(−sx) withs=16.5±0.6.

At the CERN SPS we have measured a deep inelastic μ± cross section asymmetry at momentum transfers Q2 ranging from 15 to 180GeV2. The result is in quantitative agreement with the WS/GIM standard electroweak model and allows to determine the muon neutral current couplings.

Scaling violations in the proton structure function F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) measured with high statistics in deep inelastic scattering of muons on a hydrogen target are compared to predictions of perturbative QCD. Excellent agreement is observed with numerical solutions of the evolution equations in leading and next-to-leading order. The QCD mass scale parameter Λ is determined from these data both in a flavour nonsinglet approximation and with a complete flavour singlet and nonsinglet treatment. An estimate of the gluon distribution in the proton is given.

New data is presented on the ratios of structure functions F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) measured in deep inelastic muon scattering with deuterium, nitrogen, and iron targets. The existence of nuclear effects at large Q 2 is confirmed with improved systematic accuracy. The ratio F 2 Fe ( x ) F 2 D 2 ( x ) covers the range 0.20 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.70 and is in agreement with earlier measurements. The ratio F 2 N 2 ( x )/ F 2 D 2 ( x ) is measured over the range 0.08 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.70 and is compatible with unity below x = 0.3.

In a sample of diffractive events of high multiplicity a sharp five standard deviation signal is observed at M=2255 MeV/c/sup 2/ in the K /sup -/p pi /sup +/ mass distribution and, although with less statistical strength, at the same mass in the lambda /sup 0/ pi /sup + / pi /sup +/ pi /sup -/ channel. These signals are identified as being due to the decay of the charmed baryon Lambda /sub c//sup +/ which is produced with a cross section times branching ratio sigma /sub C/B in the range 0.7-1.8 mu b for the K/sup -/ pi /sup +/p decay and 0.3-0.7 mu b for the Lambda /sup 0/ pi /sup +/ pi /sup +/ pi /sup -/ system. The high mass μ + μ − pairs produced by 280 GeV μ + on a carbon target are studied in a search for the Y production. The high mass continuum in the region 2–18 GeV is interpreted in terms of QED pair production and of μ pairs originating from the decay of hidden and open charm particles as well as of hadrons ( π , K) from deep inelastic interactions. The upper limit for the upsilon production by muons is found to be, at the 90% confidence level, σ γ ·(γ→μ + μ − ) −39 cm 2 /nucleon.

Scaling violations in the nucleon structure function F2(x,Q2) measured with high statistics in deep inelastic scattering of muons on a carbon target are compared to predictions of perturbative QCD. Excellent agreement is observed with numerical solutions of the Altarelli-Parisi evolution equations over the entire x and Q2 range of data. In a next-to-leading order nonsinglet approximation, the QCD mass scale parameter ΛMS is determined to be 230±20(stat.)±60(syst.) MeV. A singlet to the data favours a soft gluon distribution.

Forward particle production in $\mathrm{pp}$ interactions triggered by a 30\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} pion of momentum exceeding 5 GeV/c has been studied at c.m. energy of 63 GeV. Quantum-chromodynamic model calculations show that in a majority of such interactions the incident proton loses a valence quark. Results indicate that hadronization of diquarks is primarily a recombination process leading to the formation of a high-$x$ baryon.

The energy-loss spectrum of high energy muons after traversal of a 10 meter iron degrader has been measured with an accuracy of better than 1%. Data taken at energies between 50 and 120 GeV are in agreement with predictions from a Monte Carlo program based on the most recent theoretical descriptions of all relevant processes. The stopping power calculated by this program deviates up to several percent from earlier calculations.

A new measurement of prompt lepton production at small transverse momenta in pp collisions at the ISR, for s = 53 GeV, is presented. The cπ ratio, which is about 10−4 for pT > 1 GeV/c, rises rapidly as pT goes to smaller values, confirming our original results. The data are consistent with equality between the numbers of e+ and e− produced in each transverse momentum interval.

No quark candidates have been seen among 0.6 × 109 charged particles at the ISR. The corresponding cross-section limit for charge 1 2 ( 2 3 ) is ≲ 3(6) × 10 −34 cm 2 for quark masses up to 22(13) GeV, assuming 〈PT = 0.4 GeV/c.

The ionization loss of electrons in the energy range γ=120÷6300 has been investigated using Ilford G.5 emulsions. The results show very good agreement with Sternheimer's ionization loss theory. No apparent evidence for a decrease in ionization loss through radiative corrections according to the theory of Tsytovich is observed.

We present results on a high statistics study of the proton structure functions F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) and R = σ L / σ T measured in deep inelastic scattering of muons on a hydrogen target. The analysis is based on 1.8 × 10 6 events after all cuts, recorded at beam energies of 100, 120, 200 and 280 GeV and covering a kinematic range 0.06 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.80 and 7 GeV 2 ⩽ Q 2 ⩽260 GeV 2 . At small x , we find R to be different from zero in agreement with predictions of perturbative QCD.

New Results are presented on nuclear effects in deep inelastic muon scattering on deuterium and iron targets at large Q 2 . The ratio F Fe 2 (x) F D 2 2 (x) measured in the kinematic range 0.06⩽ x ⩽0.70, 14GeV 2 ⩽ Q 2 ⩽70 GeV 2 is in good agreement with earlier measurements in the region of x > 0.25. At lower x , the structure function ratio exhibits an enhancement of ≈5%.

The interference structure function xG 3 ( x ) has been measured for the first time scattering positive and negative muons of opposite helicity off a carbon target. The x dependence observed for Q 2 between 40 and 180 (GeV/c 2 ) is in good agreement with predictions of the quark-parton model. The measured ratio 2( a u Q u + a d Q d )/( Q u 2 + Q d 2 = 1.87 ± 0.25 (stat.) ± 0.24 (syst.) is consistent with the hypothesis of fractional quark charges and determines the sign of Q u − Q d to be positive.

A search for D(1.87) mesons produced at x approximately 0.1 at the CERN ISR gave a null result. Cross-section upper limits of 9 mu b and 8 mu b at the 95% confidence level were measured for the processes p+p to D/sup 0/+X, D/sup 0/ to K/sup -/+ pi /sup +/, and p+p to D/sup 0 /+X, D/sup 0/ to K/sup +/+ pi /sup -/, respectively. Production of f /sup 0/(1270) was observed with a cross-section of 1.9+or-0.4 mb. (12 refs).

In deep inelastic interactions of 200 GeV muons with a carbon target, we have found 17 events of the type μ ± N→ μ ± μ ∓ μ ∓ X (“wrong-sign” dimuons). We derive upper limits of 1.2% (90% CL) on D 0 - D 0 transitions (mixing) or, alternatively, of 9 pb (90% CL) cross section for B B pair production as possible sources of such events.
