We report on the increase of the Young's modulus (E) of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) grown multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) upon high temperature heat treatment. The post heat-treatment at 2200–2800ºC in a controlled atmosphere results in a considerable improvement of the microstructure, chemical stability and electro-physical properties of the nanotubes. The Young's modulus of MWNTs of different diameters was measured by the deflection of a single tube suspended across the hole of silicon nitride membrane and loaded by an atomic force microscope tip. Contrary to previous reports, a strong increase of E was feasible due to the improved growth conditions of pristine carbon nanotubes and to the improved heat treatment conditions. However, the elastic modulus of CVD grown MWNTs still shows strong diameter dependence resulting from the remaining structural inhomogeneities in large diameter nanotubes.

X-ray photon detection is important for a wide range of applications. The highest demand, however, comes from medical imaging, which requires cost-effective, high-resolution detectors operating at low-photon flux, therefore stimulating the search for novel materials and new approaches. Recently, hybrid halide perovskite CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 (MAPbI 3 ) has attracted considerable attention due to its advantageous optoelectronic properties and low fabrication costs. The presence of heavy atoms, providing a high scattering cross-section for photons, makes this material a perfect candidate for X-ray detection. Despite the already-successful demonstrations of efficiency in detection, its integration into standard microelectronics fabrication processes is still pending. Here, we demonstrate a promising method for building X-ray detector units by 3D aerosol jet printing with a record sensitivity of 2.2 × 10 8 μC Gy air -1 cm -2 when detecting 8 keV photons at dose rates below 1 μGy/s (detection limit 0.12 μGy/s), a 4-fold improvement on the best-in-class devices. An introduction of MAPbI 3 -based detection into medical imaging would significantly reduce health hazards related to the strongly ionizing X-rays' photons.

The stiffness of tumor cells varies during cancer progression. In particular, metastatic carcinoma cells analyzed by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) appear softer than non-invasive and normal cells. Here we examined by AFM how the stiffness of melanoma cells varies during progression from non-invasive Radial Growth Phase (RGP) to invasive Vertical Growth Phase (VGP) and to metastatic tumors. We show that transformation of melanocytes to RGP and to VGP cells is characterized by decreased cell stiffness. However, further progression to metastatic melanoma is accompanied by increased cell stiffness and the acquisition of higher plasticity by tumor cells, which is manifested by their ability to greatly augment or reduce their stiffness in response to diverse adhesion conditions. We conclude that increased plasticity, rather than decreased stiffness as suggested for other tumor types, is a marker of melanoma malignancy. The colloidal stabilities of ten carbon nanotubes (CNTs) having varying physico-chemical properties were compared in long-term experiments. The presence of Suwannee River Humic Acid (SRHA) increased the fraction of CNTs in the supernatants (4-88% for the various CNT types) after addition in pre-dispersed form and 20 days of shaking and 5 days of settling. These suspensions were monomodal, containing individually suspended CNTs with highly negative surface charges. Calcium (2 mM) removed most of the CNT types from the supernatant, due to CNT-agglomerate formation initiated by reduction in surface charge. The amount of SRHA adsorbed to the different CNT types did not correlate (r(2) < 0.1) with the percentage of CNTs remaining in suspension. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that the oxygen content and the diameter of the CNTs significantly influenced the percentage of stabilized CNTs, resulting in an increased fraction of functionalized and large-diameter CNTs that remained in suspension., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. In the accepted mechanisms of carbon nanotube (CNT) growth by catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CCVD), the catalyst support is falsely considered as a passive material whose only role is to prevent catalytic particles from coarsening. The chemical changes that occur to the carbon source molecules on the surface are mainly overlooked. Here, we demonstrate the strong influence of the support on the growth of CNTs and show that it can be tuned by controlling the acid-base character of the support surface. This finding largely clarifies the CCVD growth mechanism. The CNTs' growth stems from the support where the presence of basic sites catalyzes the aromatization and reduces the complexity of CNT precursor molecules. On basic supports, the growth is activated and CNTs are more than 1000 times longer than those produced on acidic supports. These results could be the bedrock of future development of more efficient growth of CNTs on surfaces of functional materials. Finally, the modification of the aciditiy of the catalyst support during the super growth process is also discussed.

Nanotubes present one of the most promising opportunities in nanotechnology with a plethora of applications in nanoelectronics, mechanical engineering, as well as in biomedical technology. Due to their structure and some physical properties, boron nitride (BN) nanotubes (BNNTs) possess several advantages over carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and they are now commercially produced and used on a large scale. The human and environmental exposure to BN nanomaterials is expected to increase in the near future, and their biological responses need to be examined. Using complementary assays, we have extensively investigated the effects of BNNTs on the viability and metabolic status of different cell types: on the one hand, the effects on cells present in the lung alveoli, and on the other hand, on human embryonic kidney (HEK) cells. Our results indicate that BNNTs are cytotoxic for all cell types studied and, in most cases, are more cytotoxic than CNTs in their pristine (p-CNT) and functionalized (f-CNT) form. However, the level of toxicity and the prominent morphological alterations in the cell populations withstanding BNNT exposure are cell-type-dependent. For instance, BNNTs induced extensive multinucleated giant cell formation in macrophages and increased levels of eosinophilia in fibroblasts. Finally, our results point the toxicity of tubular nanomaterials to be strongly correlated with the cellular accumulation enhanced for straight nanotubes.

Herein, we present a novel morphology for solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells based on the simple and straightforward self-assembly of nanorods into a 3D fibrous network of fused single-crystalline anatase nanowires. This architecture offers a high roughness factor, significant light scattering, and up to several orders of magnitude faster electron transport to reach a near-record-breaking conversion efficiency of 4.9%.

We present a general catalyst design to synthesize ultrahigh density, aligned forests of carbon nanotubes by cyclic deposition and annealing of catalyst thin films. This leads to nanotube forests with an area density of at least 10(13) cm(-2), over 1 order of magnitude higher than existing values, and close to the limit of a fully dense forest. The technique consists of cycles of ultrathin metal film deposition, annealing, and immobilization. These ultradense forests are needed to use carbon nanotubes as vias and interconnects in integrated circuits and thermal interface materials. Further density increase to 10(14) cm(-2) by reducing nanotube diameter is possible, and it is also applicable to nanowires.

The catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CCVD) is currently the most flexible and economically attractive method for the growth of carbon nanotubes. Although its principle is simple, the precisely controlled growth of carbon nanotubes remains very complex because many different parameters influence the growth process. In this article, we review our recent results obtained on the synthesis of carbon nanotubes via CCVD. We discuss the role of the catalyst and the catalyst support. Our recent results obtained from the water assisted growth and the equimolar C₂H₂-CO₂ reaction are also discussed. Both procedures lead to significantly enhanced carbon nanotube growth. In particular, the latter allows growing carbon nanotubes on diverse substrate materials at low temperatures.

In many applications like photovoltaics, fuel cells, batteries, or interconnects in integrated circuits carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have the role of charge transport electrodes. The building of such devices requires an in situ growth of CNTs at temperatures where the structure or chemical composition of the functional materials is unaltered. We report that in a chemical vapor deposition process involving an oxidative dehydrogenation reaction of C2H2 with CO2 growth temperatures below 400 degrees C are achieved. Furthermore, the growth can be performed on versatile materials ranging from metals through oxides to organic materials.

At present, nanofilaments are not exclusively based on carbon atoms but can be produced from many inorganic materials in the form of nanotubes and nanowires. It is essential to systematically assess the acute toxicity of these newly synthesized materials since it cannot be predicted from the known toxicity of the same material in another form. Here, the cellular toxicity of TiO2-based nanofilaments was studied in relation to their morphology and surface chemistry. These structures produced by hydrothermal treatment were titanate nanotubes and nanowires with a Na(x)TiO(2+delta) composition. The cytotoxic effect was mainly evaluated by MTT assays combined with direct cell counting and cytopathological analyses of the lung tumor cells. Our work clearly demonstrated that the presence of Na(x)TiO(2+delta) nanofilaments had a strong dose-dependent effect on cell proliferation and cell death. Nanofilament internalization and alterations in cell morphology were observed. Acid treatment performed to substitute Na(+) with H(+) in the Na(x)TiO(2+delta) nanofilaments strongly enhanced the cytotoxic action. This effect was attributed to structural imperfections, which are left by the atom diffusion during the substitution. On the basis of our findings, we conclude that TiO2-based nanofilaments are cytotoxic and thus precautions should be taken during their manipulation.

We prepared buckypapers with surface densities in the 1.13-5.66 mg x cm(-2) range by filtering multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) suspensions in acetyl-acetone (acac) and dimethylformamide (DMF) through 0.45 microm nylon filters. Filtration curves were evaluated using the Carman equation. The average resistance of the filter itself was found to be Rm = 3.79 x 10(10) m(-1) for acac and 8.49 x 10(10) m(-1) for DMF The specific resistance a of the filter cakes decreased with increasing film surface density from 16.1 x 10(12) m x kg(-1) (for the 1.13 mg x cm(-2) film from DMF) to 4.38 x 10(12) m x kg(-1) (for the 5.66 mg x cm(-2) film from DMF). The effective diffusivity of N2 at 298 K and a pressure difference of 10 mbar was also determined for all membranes and found to fall into the 1.14 x 10(-9)-3.74 x 10(-9) m2 x s(-1) range. Both the porosity and the tortuosity of buckypapers increased with their thickness. An approx. 5 microm thick Teflon (PTFE) coating was applied to the MWCNT membranes by pulsed laser deposition. The gas permeability of the MWCNT-PTFE membranes matches that of the uncoated nanotube films. This observation is an agreement with our SEM and AFM data on porous coating morphology.
