Objective: Acute encephalitis syndrome is a cause of significant morbidity and mortality in Nepal. Although Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) was thought to be a major cause for acute encephalitis syndrome, more non-Japanese encephalitis virus cases are reported. The outcome of patients with acute encephalitis syndrome is variable. Our study was designed to study the clinical profile and outcome of patients with acute encephalitis syndrome managed in tertiary care center in central Nepal. Methods: The record of patients admitted with diagnosis of acute encephalitis syndrome,from January 2010 to December 2010 in College of Medical Sciences-Teaching Hospital (CMS-TH) was reviewed. They were classified clinically as meningitis, encephalitis and meningoencephalitis. The clinical details and reports of the patients were recorded and analyzed. Results: Total of 85 cases of meningitis and encephalitis were identified. Mean age was 19.18 years. Fifty-six (65.9%) patients were males and 29 (34.1%) were females. Sixty (70.58%) patients had meningitis, 8 (9.41%) had encephalitis, and 17 (20.0%) had meningoencephalitis. JE serology was positive in 4 patients (4.7%). Seventy-two (84.7%) patients made full recovery and were discharged from hospital. Thirteen (15.3%) patients left against medical advice (LAMA). Conclusion: Acute encephalitis syndrome is still a major public health problem in Nepal. Few of these patients have Japanese Encephalitis. There is a trend towards improved outcome because of availability of improved health services. However, financial constraint remains a challenge in management of acute encephalitis syndrome. Pneumomediastinum (PM) and subcutaneous emphysema (SCE) following foreign body aspiration are very rare. Pneumomediastinum (PM) occurs due to alveolar rupture, whereas subcutaneous emphysema occurs if air leak persists. It is benign in nature, but in some cases, it might be fatal. Therefore, proper assessment and management are required to limit the life-threatening complications and FB should always be suspected whenever spontaneous PM and SCE is seen. PM and SCE are very rare presentations of foreign body aspiration in children of age less than 3 years and in such circumstances, the possibility of foreign body should be considered. Purpose: Accurate understanding of the genomic and transcriptomic data provided by next-generation sequencing (NGS) is essential for the effective utilization of precision oncology. Molecular tumor boards (MTBs) aim to translate the complex data in NGS reports into effective clinical interventions. Often, MTB treatment recommendations differ from those in the NGS reports. In this study, we analyze the discordance between these recommendations and the rationales behind the discordances, in a non-high-income setting, with international input to evaluate the necessity of MTB in clinical practice., Methods: We collated data from MTB that were virtually hosted in Chennai, India. We included patients with malignancies who had NGS reports on solid tissue or liquid biopsies, and excluded those with incomplete data. MTB forms and NGS reports of each clinical case were analyzed and evaluated for recommendation concordance. Concordance was defined as an agreement between the first recommendation in the MTB forms and the therapeutic recommendations suggested in the NGS report. Discordance was the absence of the said agreement. The rationales for discordance were identified and documented., Results: Seventy MTB reports were analyzed with 49 cases meeting the inclusion criteria. The recommendation discordance was 49% (24 of 49). Discordant recommendations were mainly due to low level of evidence for the drug (75% of cases)., Conclusion: The discordance between MTB and NGS vendor recommendations highlights the clinical utility of MTB. The educational experiences provided by this initiative are an example of how virtual academic collaborations can enhance patient care and provider education across geographic borders.

Background: To address the shortage of oncologists in the wake of the rapidly increasing global cancer burden, general practitioners of oncology (GPOs) have been added to cancer care teams worldwide. GPOs are family physicians with additional training in oncology and their roles differ by both country and region. In this study, we aimed to learn about the roles and expectations of GPOs from the perspective of oncologists in Canada and Nepal., Methods: A survey was designed and administered to Canadian and Nepali Oncologists between February and November 2022 using Research Electronic Data Capture, a secure web-based software platform hosted at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Participants were recruited through personal networks/social media in Nepal and the survey was distributed through an email list provided by the Canadian Association of Medical Oncologists., Results: The survey received 48 responses from Canadian and 7 responses from Nepali oncologists. Canadian respondents indicated that in terms of educational content delivery, clinics with oncologists followed by didactic lectures by oncologists were thought to be the most effective, followed by a small group learning and online education. Nepali oncologists also indicated didactic lectures by oncologists and small group learning would be the most effective teaching techniques, followed by online education and clinics with oncologists. Critical knowledge domains and skills most relevant for GPO training identified by Canadian respondents were managing pain and other common symptoms of cancers, as well as treatment of common side effects, followed by goals of care discussion, post-treatment surveillance for recurrence, and the management of long-term complications from treatment. Respondents from Nepal, however, suggested an approach to diagnosis to patient with increased risk of cancer, and cancer staging were the most critical knowledge domains and skills. The majority of oncologists in both countries thought a training program of 6-12 months was optimal., Conclusion: We found many similarities in oncologist's opinions of GPOs between the two countries, however, there were also some notable differences such as the need to provide cancer screening services in Nepal. Background: Asian patients with adenocarcinoma of lung have higher incidence of epidermal growth factor receptor mutations which predict increased response and survival in patients to oral tyrosine kinase inhibitors. This study was conducted to study the frequency of epidermal growth factor receptor mutation in patients in Nepal and compare the outcome in epidermal growth factor receptor mutated versus non-mutated patients receiving standard therapy., Methods: This is an observational study conducted among newly diagnosed patients with stage IV adenocarcinoma of lung in Bir Hospital from April 2017 to June 2018. Demographic and clinical data collection along with epidermal growth factor receptor mutation testing was done. Patients with epidermal growth factor receptor mutations received Gefitinib while non-mutated patients received systemic chemotherapy. Response evaluation, progression free survival at 1 year, objective response rate and quality of life were compared. Follow up period was for 1 year., Results: Eighty three (33%, n=253) patients were diagnosed with adenocarcinoma of the lung with mean age at diagnosis being 59.4 years. epidermal growth factor receptor mutations were found in 29% patients. Complete response was achieved in 9.1% vs 3.0 % (p=0.46), objective response rate was 27.3% versus 15.2% (p=0.23), progression free survival at 1 year was 39% vs 27%, (p = 0.29) and mean score of global health status was 68.1 versus 61.6 in epidermal growth factor receptor mutated versus non-mutated (p = 0.036)., Conclusions: The frequency of epidermal growth factor receptor mutation in patients with adenocarcinoma of the lung was lower than in Eastern Asian studies, but higher than in western populations. epidermal growth factor receptor mutated patients had improved survival, better treatment response and quality of life in comparison with non-mutated.

VACTERL association is typically defined by the presence of at least three of the congenital malformations that make up the term including: vertebral defects, anal atresia, cardiac defects, tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF), renal anomalies, and limb deformities. Patients with VACTERL are typically managed through immediate-postnatal-surgical correction of the specific congenital anomalies (typically anal atresia, specific types of cardiac malformations, and/or TEF), followed by long-term medical management of the congenital malformations. Although congenital anomalies might have long-lasting effects, the prognosis can be positive when the best surgical remedy is possible. Here, we present a case of 5 years female that is a known case of VACTERL Status Post (S/P)TEF repair, S/P double outlet right ventricle repair at sixth day and fifth month of life. To fill the gap in health research capacity-building efforts, we created the 'Virtual Library' (VL) - a web-based repository of context-relevant resources for health researchers in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This paper describes the participatory process used to systematically develop the VL, and describes how our interprofessional team - representing both an LMIC (Nepal) and a high-income country (HIC) (USA, US) - engaged in shared meaning-making. A team of researchers and clinicians representing a range of subdisciplines from Nepal and the US created a replicable search strategy and standardized Resource Screening Guide (RSG) to systematically assess resources to be included within the VL. Descriptive methods were used to summarize findings from the RSG and lessons learned from the collaborative process. Collectively, 14 team members reviewed 564 potential resources (mean = 40, SD = 22.7). Mean RSG score was 7.02/10 (SD = 2). More than 76% of resources met each of the four quality criteria (relevant; reputable, accessible; understandable). Within the published VL, 298 resources were included, organized by 15 topics and 45 sub-topics. Of these, 223 resources were evaluated by the RSG; 75 were identified by team member expertise. The collaborative process involved regular meetings, iterative document revisions, and peer review. Resource quality was better than expected, perhaps because best practices/principles related to health research are universally relevant, regardless of context. While the RSG was essential to systematize our search and ensure reproducibility, team member expertise was valuable. Pairing team members during peer-review led to bi-directional knowledge sharing and was particularly successful. This work reflects a highly collaborative global partnership and offers a model for future health research capacity-building efforts. We invite engagement with the Virtual Library as one supportive pillar of infrastructure to develop individual and institutional research capacity.

The e cancer Kathmandu 2022 workshop on the 24th-25th September 2022 was the first e cancer conference organised in Nepal, a Southeast Asian nation sandwiched between India and China. It was focused on critical appraisal skills for evidence-based practice and was organised in partnership with the Karnali Academy of Health Sciences and the Civil Service Hospital from Nepal, and the Queen's Global Oncology Program from Canada. The workshop emphasised the need for critical thinking in understanding clinical research, and also motivated the delegates to undertake meaningful clinical research relevant to the local setting. The sessions highlighted the features of a good clinical research, identify pitfalls in the reporting of clinical trials, implementation of the research into locally relevant practice and development of local clinical guidelines. Furthermore, the faculty also discussed how to write a good scientific paper, the do's and don'ts of a systematic review and meta-analysis, the role of peer-review and how to do one properly and what do editors look for in evaluating papers submitted for publication. The audience learned the importance of finding a good mentor and fostering local and international collaboration. The local faculty also highlighted their own personal journeys and how mentorship and global collaboration played an important role in their own academic career. Introduction: Malnutrition is one of the most frequent disorders among cancer patients. It is seen in 50-90% of cancer patients. This high prevalence of malnutrition is very concerning as it is associated with reduced effective treatment, functional status, quality of life and survival. The aim of the study was to find out the prevalence of malnutrition among cancer patients in a tertiary care centre., Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 95 cancer patients in the Department of Clinical Oncology of a tertiary care centre from 25 January 2022 to 25 July 2022. Ethical approval was obtained from the Institutional Review Committee (Reference number: 1192/2078/79). Convenience sampling was done. Patients were screened using Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment for malnutrition. Point estimate and 95% Confidence Interval were calculated., Results: Among 95 cancer patients, 22 (23.15%) (15.10-32.90, 95% Confidence Interval) were malnourished., Conclusions: The prevalence of malnutrition was found to be lower than in other studies done in similar settings. Introduction: Quality palliative care, which prioritizes comfort and symptom control, can reduce global suffering from non-communicable diseases, such as cancer. To address this need, the Nepalese Association of Palliative Care (NAPCare) created pain management guidelines (PMG) to support healthcare providers in assessing and treating serious pain. The NAPCare PMG are grounded in World Health Organization best practices but adapted for the cultural and resource context of Nepal. Wider adoption of the NAPCare PMG has been limited due to distribution of the guidelines as paper booklets., Methods: Building on a long-standing partnership between clinicians and researchers in the US and Nepal, the NAPCare PMG mobile application ("app") was collaboratively designed. Healthcare providers in Nepal were recruited to pilot test the app using patient case studies. Then, participants completed a Qualtrics survey to evaluate the app which included the System Usability Scale (SUS) and selected items from the Mobile App Rating Scale (MARS). Descriptive and summary statistics were calculated and compared across institutions and roles. Regression analyses to explore relationships (α = 0.05) between selected demographic variables and SUS and MARS scores were also conducted., Results: Ninety eight healthcare providers ( n = 98) pilot tested the NAPCare PMG app. Overall, across institutions and roles, the app received an SUS score of 76.0 (a score > 68 is considered above average) and a MARS score of 4.10 (on a scale of 1 = poor, 5 = excellent). 89.8% ( n = 88) "agreed" or "strongly agreed" that the app will help them better manage cancer pain. Age, years of experience, and training in palliative care were significant in predicting SUS scores ( p -values, 0.0124, 0.0371, and 0.0189, respectively); institution was significant in predicting MARS scores ( p = 0.0030)., Conclusion: The NAPCare PMG mobile app was well-received, and participants rated it highly on both the SUS and MARS. Regression analyses suggest end-user variables important to consider in designing and evaluating mobile apps in lower resourced settings. Objective: The mean platelet volume (MPV) is a measure of platelet size, and it is considered a surrogate marker of platelet activation. Because the correlation between platelet count/size and lung cancer prognosis remains unclear, this meta-analysis comprehensively evaluated the prognostic significance of MPV among patients with lung cancer., Methods: A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, Google Scholar, and additional sources of relevant studies were conducted with no language restrictions from inception to 7 May 2021. Overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS)/progression-free survival (PFS), as well as their hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), were pooled to evaluate the relationship between MPV and survival. The study protocol was registered on PROSPERO., Results: Eleven studies involving 2421 patients with lung cancer were included in our analysis. Nine studies including only patients with non-small cell lung cancer were included in the meta-analysis. Our analysis revealed no significant associations of MPV with OS (HR = 1.09, 95% CI = 0.84-1.41) and DFS/PFS (HR = 1.13, 95% CI = 0.58-2.20)., Conclusion: Pretreatment MPV levels did not display prognostic significance in patients with NSCLC. Large-scale prospective studies and a validation study considering ethnicity and lung cancer staging are warranted.

Background: One way to improve the delivery of oncology palliative care in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) is to leverage mobile technology to support healthcare providers in implementing pain management guidelines (PMG). However, PMG are often developed in higher-resourced settings and may not be appropriate for the resource and cultural context of LMICs., Objectives: This research represents a collaboration between the University of Virginia and the Nepalese Association of Palliative Care (NAPCare) to design a mobile health application ('app') to scale-up implementation of existing locally developed PMG., Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of clinicians within Nepal to inform design of the app. Questions focused on knowledge, beliefs, and confidence in managing cancer pain; barriers to cancer pain management; awareness and use of the NAPCare PMG; barriers to smart phone use and desired features of a mobile app., Findings: Surveys were completed by 97 palliative care and/or oncology healthcare providers from four diverse cancer care institutions in Nepal. 49.5% (n = 48) had training in palliative care/cancer pain management and the majority (63.9%, n = 62) reported high confidence levels (scores of 8 or higher/10) in managing cancer pain. Highest ranked barriers to cancer pain management included those at the country/cultural level, such as nursing and medical school curricula lacking adequate content about palliative care and pain management, and patients who live in rural areas experiencing difficulty accessing healthcare services (overall mean = 6.36/10). Most nurses and physicians use an Android Smart Phone (82%, n = 74), had heard of the NAPCare PMG (96%, n = 88), and reported frequent use of apps to provide clinical care (mean = 6.38/10, n = 92). Key barriers to smart phone use differed by discipline, with nurses reporting greater concerns related to cost of data access (70%, n = 45) and being prohibited from using a mobile phone at work (61%; n = 39)., Conclusions: Smart phone apps can help implement PMG and support healthcare providers in managing cancer pain in Nepal and similar settings. Introduction: The management of burns is costly and complex with inpatient burns accounting for a high proportion of the costs associated with burn care. We conducted a study to estimate the cost of inpatient burn management in Nepal. Our objectives were to identify the resource and cost components of the inpatient burn care pathways and to estimate direct and overhead costs in two specialist burn units in tertiary hospitals in Nepal., Methods: We conducted fieldwork at two tertiary hospitals to identify the cost of burns management in a specialist setting. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews (IDIs) and focus group discussions (FGDs) with burn experts; unit cost data was collected from hospital finance departments, laboratories and pharmacies. The study focused on acute inpatient burn cases admitted to specialist burn centres within a hospital-setting., Results: Experts divided inpatient burn care pathways into three categories: superficial partial-thickness burns (SPT), mixed depth partial-thickness burns (MDPT) and full thickness burns (FT). These pathways were confirmed in the FGDs. A 'typical' burns patient was identified for each pathway. Total resource use and total direct costs along with overhead costs were estimated for acute inpatient burn patients. The average per patient pathway costs were estimated at NRs 102,194 (US$ 896.4), NRs 196,666 (US$ 1725), NRs 481,951 (US$ 4,227.6) for SPT, MDPT and FT patients respectively. Purpose: Patients with GI cancers in Nepal often present with advanced disease and poor outcomes. The purpose of the study was to determine the time to presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of GI cancer and the baseline factors that may be associated with delays., Patients and Methods: An institutional review board-approved study was performed in Kathmandu, Nepal, from July 2018 to June 2019. Patients with newly diagnosed GI cancers were asked to fill out a standardized questionnaire. Baseline factors such as residence, literacy, and use of self-medication were recorded. Patients were asked to report the time from first symptom to presentation, time from primary care visit to pathologic diagnosis, and time from diagnosis to surgery and/or treatment. Baseline factors were analyzed using 2-tailed t tests (Prism 8.0; GraphPad, La Jolla, CA) to determine whether any factors were associated with longer time delays in these 3 intervals., Results: The cohort comprised of 104 patients with a median age of 53.5 years (range, 22-77 years); 61.5% were men, 46.2% had upper GI cancers, and 83.7% presented with stage III or IV disease. The median time to presentation was 150 days, time to diagnosis was 220 days, and time to treatment was 50 days. There was no statistically significant difference in time intervals between upper and lower GI cancers. Use of self-medication (88.5%) was the only factor associated with longer time intervals to presentation, diagnosis, and treatment., Conclusion: Patients in Nepal have long time intervals to presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of GI cancer. Self-medication led to longer delays. Reasons for self-medication and other potential barriers will be explored in future studies in the hopes of improving outcomes.

Nepal is a small, low-income country between India and China with a unique health care delivery system. Cancer is becoming an important public health problem in the country, but a systematic plan to cancer control is lacking. In this article, we aim to provide a systematic assessment of the burden of disease and available resources and suggest prioritization approaches for the future to assist with any such future cancer control plans for the country.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical significance of the biomarkers procalcitonin (PCT) and C-reactive protein (CRP) in patients with febrile neutropenia (FN) undergoing chemotherapy for acute leukemia., Methods: We conducted a prospective, observational study in patients who developed FN while undergoing chemotherapy for acute leukemia. PCT and CRP were obtained in patients who presented with FN. Blood cultures also were obtained. The primary goals were to evaluate the ability of PCT and CRP to predict bacteremia in patients with FN. The secondary goals were to assess the prognostic role of PCT and CRP and to assess the microbiologic profile and culture sensitivity patterns in the study population., Results: A total of 124 episodes of FN that involved 67 patients with acute leukemia occurred in the study. PCT was superior to CRP in the prediction of bacteremia. The median PCT level in the bacteremia group was 3.25 ng/mL compared with 0.51 ng/mL in the group without bacteremia ( P < .01). The median values of CRP in the bacteremia and without-bacteremia groups were 119.3 mg/L and 94.5 mg/L, respectively ( P = .07). There were no differences in median PCT and CRP in patients who died and those who improved. Of the 42 positive cultures, Gram-negative bacteremia was common (86%), and Escherichia coli was the most frequent organism isolated. Carbapenem resistance was seen in 39% of positive cultures., Conclusion: PCT is an effective biomarker to predict bacteremia in patients with FN undergoing chemotherapy for acute leukemia.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to compare efficacy and toxicity of olanzapine (OLN; a higher-cost drug) and haloperidol (HAL; a lower-cost drug) in the prevention of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) in patients who receive highly emetogenic chemotherapy (HEC)., Patients and Methods: In a randomized, phase II trial, patients were randomly assigned to receive either OLN 10 mg orally on days 1 to 4 or HAL 1 mg orally on day 1 and 0.5 mg twice daily on days 2 to 4. Both groups received ondansetron 16 mg and dexamethasone 12 mg intravenously on day 1. Patients recorded their nausea using the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS) and recorded daily episodes of vomiting from day 1 to day 5. The primary end point was complete nausea prevention (CNP; ie, ESAS of 0). Secondary end point was complete emesis prevention (CEP)., Results: Sixty-five patients were randomly assigned, and 64 received their allocated treatment (n = 32 in each arm). There was no difference in CNP during the overall period (days 1 to 5) between OLN and HAL (68.7% v 71.8%; P = .78). In the acute period (day 1) and the delayed period (days 2 to 5), CNP was similar between OLN and HAL (acute: 84.3% v 81.2%; delayed: 68.7% v 75%). No difference was identified in the rate of CEP during the overall period (81.2% with OLN v 78.1% with HAL; P = .75), during the acute period (93.7% with OLN v 90.6% with HAL), or during the delayed period (84.3% with OLN v 84.3% with HAL). No difference in toxicities was noted between treatment arms., Conclusion: In this study, HAL had comparable efficacy to OLN in the management of CINV, which suggests that it is the higher-value option in patients who receive HEC in resource-scarce countries.

Disturbance of the gut microbiota is common in liver cirrhosis (LC) patients, the underlying mechanisms of which are yet to be unfolded. This study aims to explore the relationship between small bowel transit (SBT) and gut microbiota in LC patients. Cross-sectional design was applied with 36 LC patients and 20 healthy controls (HCs). The gut microbiota was characterized by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes (F/B) ratio and the Microbial Dysbiosis index (MDI) were used to evaluate the severity of microbiota dysbiosis. The scintigraphy method was performed in patients to describe the objective values of SBT. Patients were then subdivided according to the Child-Pugh score (threshold = 5) or SBT value (threshold = 0.6) for microbiota analysis. LC patients were characterized by an altered gut microbiota; F/B ratios and MDI were higher than HC in both Child&#95;5 (14.00 ± 14.69 vs. 2.86 ± 0.99, p < 0.01; 0.49 ± 0.80 vs. -0.47 ± 0.69, p < 0.01) and Child&#95;5+ (15.81 ± 15.11 vs. 2.86±0.99, p < 0.01; 1.11 ± 1.05 vs. -0.47 ± 0.69, p < 0.01) sub-groups in patients. Difference in the gut microbiota between Child&#95; 5 and Child&#95;5+ patients was inappreciable, but the SBT was relatively slower in Child&#95;5+ patients (43 ± 26% vs. 80 ± 15%, p < 0.05). Compared with the Child-Pugh score indicators, SBT showed stronger associations with bacterial genera. A clear difference in the gut microbiota was observed between SBT&#95;0.6- and SBT&#95;0.6+ patients [Pr(> F ) = 0.0068, pMANOVA], with higher F/B ratios and MDI in SBT&#95;0.6- patients (19.71 ± 16.62 vs. 7.33 ± 6.65, p < 0.01; 1.02 ± 0.97 vs. 0.20 ± 0.58, p < 0.01). Similar results were observed between the SBT&#95;0.6- and SBT&#95;0.6+ sub-groups of patients with normal liver function and a Child-Pugh score of 5. SBT was negatively correlated with both the F/B ratio and MDI ( r = -0.34, p < 0.05; r = -0.38, p < 0.05). Interestingly, an increased capacity for the inferred pathway "bacterial invasion of epithelial cells" in patients, was highly negatively correlated with SBT ( r = -0.57, p < 0.01). The severity of microbiota dysbiosis in LC patients depends on SBT rather than Child-Pugh score. SBT per se might be significantly related to the gut microbiota abnormalities observed in patients with LC.

A 14-month-old Nepalese infant had developed a rapidly growing facial tumor originating from a dark spot on her upper eyelid. A cavernous hemangioma was suspected and treated with high doses of propranolol and prednisolone. Remission was dramatic. Histology confirmed alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma. Chemotherapy was planned but not carried out due to complicated logistics. The girl died at the age of 3. We present this case for discussion as to whether propranolol and prednisolone might be effective in rapidly growing rhabdomyosarcomas.

Context: Male androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a common condition. There is limited information on its prevalence and patterns., Aims: (1). To find the prevalence and most common pattern (2). To correlate the age and pattern of alopecia., Settings and Design: Population-based study., Materials and Methods: This is a population-based study from the public. The selection was random. The method involved was asking the age and, if found to between 30 and 50 years, the scalp was examined for alopecia and the pattern was determined using the Hamilton Norwood classification., Results: Of 1,005 subjects, the youngest was 30 years old and the oldest 49 years old, with a mean age of 37.05 ± standard deviation 4.79. 39.2% of the subjects were in the age group of 30-35, 34.4% in the 36-40 year age group, 26.0% in the 41-45 years age group and 0.4% in the 46-50 years age group. Five hundred and eighty-three subjects (58%) had AGA, the most common type being grade II (27.27%) followed by grade I (22.12%) and grade III (21.78%). 47.5% (P = 0.003) had pattern alopecia in the 30-35 years age group, 58.7% in the 36-40 years age group (P = 0.8) and 73.2% in the 41-45 years age group (P ≤ 0.001). In the 30-35 years age group, grade I was 51.18%, grade II was 42.77% and grade VI was 18.52%. In the 41-45 years age group, grade I was 13.38%, grade III was 33.85% and grade VI was 66.67%., Conclusions: Fifty-eight percent of the male population aged 30-50 years had AGA. Its grade increased with increase in age. 12.9% of the male population had grades IV to VI, and would benefit from hair transplantation while 44.1% had grades I to III and are potential candidates for medical treatment.

The carbon dioxide (CO(2)) laser is a versatile tool that has applications in ablative lasing and caters to the needs of routine dermatological practice as well as the aesthetic, cosmetic and rejuvenation segments. This article details the basics of the laser physics as applicable to the CO(2) laser and offers guidelines for use in many of the above indications.
