Before giving any of the results obtained at the two New Jersey Egg Laying and Breeding Contests, I would like to give some idea of the location of the contests and the conditions under which these results were obtained. The contest at Vineland is situated in the southern part of the State, about half way between Camden and Atlantic City. It is about ninety miles from New Brunswick due south. As a general rule the weather is somewhat milder here than it is in the central part of the state, in which New Brunswick is located, having weather conditions very similar to those at Washington, D. C. There is a difference of about two weeks in the seasons between New Brunswick and Vineland, thereby giving about one month longer each year of more favorable weather than we have at New Brunswick. The purpose of this paper is merely to give a summary of the figures that were obtained during the 1922 brooding season at the Vineland Contest. The birds that were being brooded were the progeny of the birds of the Bergen County Contest, but were brooded at Vineland because of the lack of equipment at the Bergen County plant. No one pen received any different attention than another—all were treated alike. The figures are not, therefore, meant to indicate the results of an experiment, but to show about what may be expected on any plant. Efforts were made—and in the writer’s opinion they were successful—to keep an accurate record of every item of expense, as well as accurate records on weights.
