Paleobotanists need other rules of nomenclature than neobotanists, because even with rich collections of plant fossils we only may create form and organ species, which are heterogeneous and because even detailed studies are not fulfilling the claims of the notion “biological species” required by neobotanists. In any case it is a very striking effort to reconstruct the complete plant from the incomplete fossils. But still, even by this endeavor we cannot, till now, reconstruct a biological species. The combined species are provisional. Consequently, paleobotanists must retain the possibility to rearrange the taxa very often in new provisional combinations and that is hindered by the present I.C.B.N. with its intentions of definitive regulations.

Es werden drei mannliche Zapfen derUllmannia frumentaria und ihr Pollen beschrieben. Dabei werden grundsatzliche Fragen des Vergleichs der Sporae in situ mit den Sporae dispersae beruhrt.

Die kutinose Exine der fossilen Pflanzensporen zeigt oft Falten, die nicht zu den primaren Eigenschaften der Sporen gehoren und doch einen diagnostischen Wert haben.

New data are given concerning the strata of the spore coat. It is possible to count the strata, but often the spore-coat strata of different plant families cannot be put in morphological relationships. A rule is found in the phylogenetic evolution of the saccus. In fossil spores no prothallium is seen. Proximal germination at the tetrad scar has occurred for a longer time than was believed (cf. the Cycadofilicales, in part the Cycadeoidales, and perhaps the Coniferales).

Die horizontale und vertikale Verbreitung der Sporenarten des Karbons und Perms wird kurz gestreift. Es folgt eine Untersuchung der Substanz und der Schichtung des Sporoderms der karbonischen Sporen.

Die Gestalten der karbonischen Sporen sind sehr mannigfaltig. Dazu zeigen sie manchmal Besonderheiten, die sich bei den rezenten Sporen nicht so ausgepragt finden. Dies regt dazu an, sich Gedanken uber die Funktion solcher Spezialisierungen zu machen. Es konnten damit nicht nur Beitrage zur Okologie palaozoischer Pflanzengesellschaften geliefert werden, sondern auch zu den Bedingungen, unter denen die Steinkohle entstanden ist.

Einige neue Sporae dispersae werden beschrieben, wobei sich zeigt, das Organ- und Formspezies eine andere Aufgabe haben als die klassischen Spezies.
