Blood and fecal samples of chukar partridge (Alectoris chukar), albino pheasant (Phasianus colchicus), silver pheasant (Lophura nycthemera), rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri) and turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) were analyzed to check parasitic prevalence. To record parasites these five avian species were placed kept in separate cages at Avian Conservation and Research Center, Department of Wildlife an Ecology, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore, Pakistan. 100 fecal and 100 blood samples for each bird species were inspected to analyze internal parasites. During present study, 17 species of endoparasites 14 from fecal samples and three from blood were examined. Two species of ectoparasites i.e. mite Dermanyssus gallinae 42% and fowl ticks Args persicus 41%were studied. Blood parasites included Plasmodium juxtanucleare 50%, Leucoctoyzoon simond having parasitic prevalence 40%, and Aegyptinella pullorum having parasitic prevalence of 40%. Parasitic species recorded from fecal samples included 6 species of nematodes viz. Allodpa suctoria 2%. Syngamus trachea with parasitic prevalence of 60%, Capillaria annulata 37.5%, Ascardia galli 24%, Capillaria anatis 40% and Heterakis gallinarum 28.3%. Similarly, two species of trematodes viz. Prosthogonimus ovatus having parasitic prevalence of 50% and Prosthogonimus macrorchis 21% were also documented from fecal avian samples . Single cestode species Raillietina echinobothrida having parasitic prevalence of 72% and 3 protozoan species i.e. Eimeria maxima having parasitic prevalence of 21%, Giardia lamblia 41% and Histomonas meleagridis 18% were documented during corpological analysis. In our recommendation, proper sanitation, medication and vaccination of bird’s enclousres are suggested to avoid parasites. RESUMO Amostras de sangue e fezes de perdiz chukar (Alectoris chukar), faisão-albino (Phasianus colchicus), faisão-prateado (Lophura nycthemera), periquito-de-rosa (Psittacula krameri) e perus (Meleagris gallopavo) foram analisadas para verificar a prevalência de parasitas. Para registrar os parasitas, essas cinco espécies de aves foram colocadas em gaiolas separadas no Centro de Conservação e Pesquisa de Aves, Departamento de Vida Selvagem e Ecologia, Universidade de Veterinária e Ciências Animais, Lahore, Paquistão. Cem amostras fecais e 100 amostras de sangue para cada espécie de ave foram inspecionadas para analisar os parasitas internos. Durante o presente estudo, foram examinadas 17 espécies de endoparasitas, 14 de amostras fecais e 3 de sangue. Foram estudadas duas espécies de ectoparasitas, ou seja, o ácaro Dermanyssus gallinae 42% e o carrapato aviário Args persicus 41%. Os parasitas sanguíneos incluíram Plasmodium juxtanucleare 50%, Leucoctoyzoon simond com prevalência parasitária de 40% e Aegyptinella pullorum com prevalência parasitária de 40%. As espécies parasitas registradas em amostras fecais incluíram 6 espécies de nematoides viz. Allodpa suctoria 2%, Syngamus traqueia com prevalência parasitária de 60%, Capillaria annulata 37,5%, Ascardia galli 24%, Capillaria anatis 40% e Heterakis gallinarum 28,3%. Da mesma forma, duas espécies de trematódeos viz. Prosthogonimus ovatus com prevalência parasitária de 50% e Prosthogonimus macrorchis 21% também foram documentados em amostras fecais de aves. Espécies de cestoide único Raillietina echinobothrida com prevalência parasitária de 72% e 3 espécies de protozoários, isto é, Eimeria maxima com prevalência parasitária de 21%, Giardia lamblia 41% e Histomonas meleagridis 18% foram documentadas durante a análise corpológica. Em nossa recomendação, o saneamento adequado, medicação e vacinação de invólucros de pássaros são sugeridos para evitar parasitas.

Cigarette smoke (CS) was known for its effect of increasing oxidative stress that could trigger tissue injury and endothelial dysfunction mediated by free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS itself is a key signaling molecule that plays a role in the development of inflammatory disorders. Nuclear factor erythroid2 related factor2 (Nrf2) is the main regulator of antioxidant cellular response to cell and tissue-destroying components caused by CS. Nrf2 protein that is significantly activated in the smokers’ small airway epithelium is followed by a series of gene expression changes in the same cells. This study aims to observe differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the human small airway epithelium of smokers compared to genes whose expression changes due to astaxanthin (AST) treatment, an antioxidant compound that can modulate Nrf2. Gene expression data that was stored in the GEO browser (GSE 11952) was analyzed using GEO2R to search for DEG among smokers and nonsmokers subject. DEG was further compared to those genes whose expression changes due to astaxanthin treatment (AST) that were obtained from the Comparative Toxicogenomics Database (CTD; https://ctdbase.org/). DEG ( p < 0.05 ) analysis result shows that there are 23 genes whose expression regulation is reversed compared to gene expression due to AST treatment. The gene function annotations of the 23 DEGs showed the involvement of some of these genes in chemical and oxidative stress, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and apoptotic signaling pathways. All of the genes were involved/associated with chronic bronchitis, adenocarcinoma of the lung, non-small-cell lung carcinoma, carcinoma, small cell lung carcinoma, type 2 diabetes mellitus, emphysema, ischemic stroke, lung diseases, and inflammation. Thus, AST treatment for smokers could potentially decrease the development of ROS and oxidative stress that leads to inflammation and health risks associated with smoking.

Production and reproductive characteristics affect the productivity of dairy cows in producing milk. The repeatability value uses to estimate the most probable producing ability (MPPA), which helps estimate the productivity of dairy cattle in the subsequent lactation period. The study aimed to determine the actual ability and accuracy of MPPA based on dairy cows’ reproductive and production characteristics. Secondary data from 124 Friesian Holstein dairy cows under the auspices of the Jabung Agro Niaga Cooperative, Malang Regency. The t-test compares data from the 3rd lactation period and the MPPA value. T-test results between MPPA and 3rd lactation of milk production 0.436; lactation length 0.387; dry period 0.051; DO 0.3; and CI 0.243. The five traits are more than 0.05, so they can be stated to be significantly the same as the real value in 3rd lactation. The results of the t-test for postpartum mating are 0.04 and S/C 0.002, significantly different from the actual value in the third lactation because it is less than 0.05. Based on the research results, the MPPA method accurately estimates the characteristics of lactation length, 305 days of milk production, dry period, days open (DO), and calving interval (CI).

This paper aims to fabricate new superhydrophobic nanocomposite coating materials to protect the inner surfaces of the petroleum pipelines from corrosion. The batch emulsification polymerization technique (BEM) was used as a facial eco-friendly technique to prepare three hydrophobic (styrene/vinyl acetate) copolymers. The sol–gel method was used to prepare SiO2 nanoparticles (SiO2-NPs) with average size ranging from 90 to 101 nm. The functionalized SiO2-NPs were prepared using hexadecyl trimethoxy silane (HDTS) as a precursor to increasing the hydrophobicity character of the unfunctionalized SiO2-NPs. Three superhydrophobic [(styrene/vinyl acetate copolymer/functionalized SiO2 nanoparticles (SiO2NPs)] nanocomposites denoted as M1, M3, and M5 were fabricated by incorporating 1, 3, and 5 wt% of the functionalized-SiO2NPs into the styrene/vinyl acetate copolymer, respectively. The effectiveness of the fabricated nanocomposite coating materials was analyzed using contact angle measurement and transmission electron and atomic force microscopies. The results showed that the highest contact angle of 161.21o was obtained by M5-nanocomposite. The highest corrosion efficiency of 99.63% was obtained at 300 ppm concentration of M5-nanocomposite-coated solution, 298 K, and 24 days.

A comparative study was performed to evaluate the effect of conventional and microwave frying on the quality attributes (moisture, fat, textural properties, colour, and cooking yield) of the beef patty. Experiments were conducted by cooking the beef patties using conventional and microwave frying in two different types of oil (palm oil and corn oil). Two microwave power levels were used (50% and 70%). Microwave frying beef patty showed a significant difference in terms of moisture content, hardness, lightness (L*) and also cooking yield compared to conventional frying. The oil absorption can be reduced when the beef patty was cooked using a microwave. Beef patty fried with the highest microwave power level (70%) by using corn oil has the least oil absorption (18.44±1.04%). The theory of higher moisture loss higher oil uptake does not correspond in this experiment since low-fat content were observed as the moisture decreased for all the beef patties fried using a microwave. Analysis of the hardness of beef patty showed that microwave frying beef patty (corn oil) at a power level of 50% (MF 50%) has the hardest texture (35.48±2.10 kg). Microwave frying beef patty has a lower cooking yield (56.05±2.23 to 71.30±0.89%) compared to conventional frying (86.12±0.45 to 88.60±0.04%). The novel infectious disease (COVID-19) took only a few weeks from its official inception in December 2019 to become a global pandemic in early 2020. Countries across the world went to lockdown, and various strict measures were implemented to reduce the further spread of the infection. Although, the strict lockdown measures were aimed at stopping the spread of COVID-19, however, Its positive implications were also observed for the environmental conditions across the global regions. The present study attempted to explore the eco-restoration of coastal marine system in response to reduced deposition of atmospheric nitrogen (NO2) emission during the substantial shift in human activities across the global metropolitan cities. Remotely data of NO2 emission were taken from Ozone Monitoring Instrument and the coastal water quality along the marine system was estimated from MODIS-Aqua Level-3 using Semi-Analytic Sediment Model (SASM). The changes in tropospheric NO2 in 2020s were also compared with the long-term average changes over the baseline period 2015 − 2019. A significant reduction in anthropogenic mobility (85 − 90%) has been observed in almost all countries over different places, especially grocery, parks, workplaces, and transit stations. A massive reduction in tropospheric NO2 was detected in Wuhan (53%), Berlin (42%), London (41%), Karachi (40%), Paris (38%), Santiago (35%), and Chennai (34%) during the strict lockdown period of the early 2020 as compared to the last five years. However, after the partial lockdown was lifted, tropospheric NO2 values bounced back and slightly increased over Karachi (6%) and Bremen (12%). For water turbidity, the rate of reduction was found to be the highest along the different coastal regions of the Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea (51%), West Atlantic Ocean (32%), East Atlantic Ocean (29%), and Indian Ocean (21%) from Apr to Jun 2020. The monthly comparison of overland-runoff in 2020 compared to 2019 across the different costal watersheds indicates that the observed decline in turbidity might have been due to the reduced deposition of atmospheric nitrogen. The findings of this study suggest that the recent decline in tropospheric NO2 and water turbidity might be associated with reduced emissions from fossil fuels and road transports followed by COVID-19 forced restrictions in the twenty-first century. The inferences made here highlight the hope of improving the global environmental quality by reducing greenhouse gas emissions using innovative periodic confinement measures on heavy transport and industries while securing public health and socioeconomics.

Supercritical carbon dioxide (Sc-CO2) was applied to extract fat and cholesterol from beef floss (BF). A response surface methodology (RSM) based on central composite design (CCD) was employed to optimize the extraction conditions of temperature (30 - 62°C), pressure (7 - 35 MPa), and extraction time (0 - 40 mins). The optimum conditions were estimated to be at 51.0°C and 32.8 MPa for a duration of 32.7 mins. Under such conditions, the percentage of fat and cholesterol reduction plus lightness of Sc-CO2 treated BF (STBF) were 81.12%, 86.17%, and 57.60, respectively. The incidence of COVID-19 infection and death is known to be lower in tuberculosis (TB) endemic countries than in nonendemic countries. The Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccination, which is commonly administered in TB endemic countries, was previously reported to have a nonspecific protective effect against several infections, including COVID-19. In this study, we used a differentially expressed genes (DEG) approach to analyze the genes modulated by BCG vaccination and COVID-19 infection. The Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database was used to select a COVID-19 gene expression data set with GSE164805, GSE14408, and GSE58636, and DEG in each data set were identified using the GEO2R online tools and selected using the adjusted p value (padj) 0.05 criteria. The protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed from DEGs with the same trend of expression (upregulation or downregulation) using STRING version 11. The PPI network was performed by using the highest confidence number (0.9). DEGs that have a high-trust network were collected and functional cluster analysis of biological processes from Gene Ontology (GO), pathway analysis from the Human KEGG pathway, and COVID-19-related gene analysis was carried out using the Enrichr database. We found that either BCG or tuberculin increased the expression of several genes related to hyperinflammation, such as CCL3, CCL4, CSF2, IL1B, and LTA. In severe COVID-19, these genes were downregulated. This leads to the hypothesis that revaccination may have a protective effect against the severity of COVID-19 by reducing the hyperinflammatory status.

Introduction. The severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was known to be affected by hyperinflammation. Identification of important proteins associated with hyperinflammation is critical. These proteins can be a potential target either as biomarkers or targets in drug discovery. Therefore, we combined enrichment analysis of these proteins to identify biological knowledge related to hyperinflammation. Moreover, we conducted transcriptomic data analysis to reveal genes contributing to disease severity. Methods. We performed large-scale gene function analyses using gene ontology to identify significantly enriched biological processes, molecular functions, and cellular components associated with our proteins. One of the appropriate methods to functionally group large-scale protein-protein interaction (PPI) data into small-scale clusters is fuzzy K-partite clustering. We collected the transcriptomics data from GEO Database (GSE 164805 and GPL26963 platform). Moreover, we created a data set and analyzed gene expression using Orange Data-mining version 3.30. PPI analysis was performed using the STRING database with a confidence score >0.9. Results. This study indicated that four proteins were associated with 25 molecular functions, three were associated with 22 cellular components, and one was associated with ten biological processes. All GOs of molecular function, cellular components, and 9 of 14 biological processes were associated with important cytokines related to the COVID-19 cytokine storm present in the resulting cluster. The expression analysis showed the interferon-related genes IFNAR1, IFI6, IFIT1, and IFIT3 were significant genes, whereas PPIs showed their interactions were closely related. Conclusion. A combination of enrichment using GOs and transcriptomic analysis showed that hyperinflammation and severity of COVID-19 may be caused by interferon signaling.

The finding of electron leakage during the electron transport within the mitochondrial membrane (in eukaryotes) or in the cell membrane of the prokaryotes is an important issue for the accumulation of the Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) in the cytosol which in turn induce the probable aging of cells. In eukaryotes, mitochondrion is known to be the major site of the ROS generation in different pathological processes which may further cause cell damages as evident through the ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury, respiratory diseases, cell apoptosis, and even the onset of cancer. Thus, the mitochondrial leakage and the physiological effect of leaked protons and electrons grow up with future interest in energy metabolism. Current review focused on the physiological impact of electron/ proton leakage particularly in the eukaryotic cells based on the previous reports; emphasized on the prospects of the eukaryotic mitochondrion as a modulator of proton and electron leakage; and finally attempted to assess the regulatory mechanisms of such electron/ proton leakage.

G6PD deficiency is the commonest enzyme deficiency found in humans. Current diagnostic methods lack sensitivity to detect all cases of G6PD deficiency. We evaluated the reverse dot blot flow-through hybridisation assay designed to detect simultaneously multiple known G6PD mutations in a group of Malaysian neonates. Archival DNA samples from 141 G6PD-deficient neonates were subjected to reverse dot blot flow-through hybridisation assay using the GenoArray Diagnostic Kit (Hybribio Limited, Hong Kong) and DNA sequencing. The method involved PCR amplification of 5 G6PD exons using biotinylated primers, hybridisation of amplicons to a membrane containing oligoprobes designed for G6PD mutations known to occur in the Malaysian population and colour detection by enzyme immunoassay. The assay detected 13 of the 14 G6PD mutations and genotyped 133 (94.3%) out of 141 (102 males, 39 females) cases. Among the 39 female G6PD-deficient neonates, there were 7 homozygous and 6 compound heterozygous cases. The commonest alleles were G6PD Viangchan 871G > A (21%) and G6PD Mahidol 487G > A(20%) followed by G6PD Mediterranean 563C > T, (14%), G6PD Vanua Lava 383T > C (12%), G6PD Canton 1376G > T (10%), G6PD Orissa 131C > G (6.3%) G6PD Coimbra 592C > T (5.6%) plus 6 other mutations. DNA sequencing of remaining cases revealed 6 cases of intron 11 nt 93C > T not previously reported in Malaysia and two novel mutations, one case each of nt 1361G > T and nt 1030G > A. We found the reverse dot blot assay easy to perform, rapid, accurate and reproducible, potentially becoming an improved diagnostic test for G6PD deficiency.

During the present study, specimens were collected from selected sites of Cholistan desert and Kalabagh Game Reserve, Punjab province, Pakistan. Each captured specimen was tagged with voucher number and morphometric measurements were taken. The average snout to vent length was 172.559±1.40 mm and average weight was 92.1±1.30 g. The DNA of Uromastyx hardwickii was amplified and sequenced using 16S rRNA primer set. The obtained DNA sequence has shown reliable and clear species identification. After trimming ambiguous bases, the obtained 16S rRNA fragment was 520 bp while 16S rRNA fragments aligned with closely matched sequence from NCBI comprised of 510 bp. Closely matched sequences of genus Uromastyx were retrieved from NCBI in blast searches. Neighbour-joining tree of genus Uromastyx was constructed based on p-distance using MEGA X. The mean intraspecific variation was 0.095±0.01 while intraspecific variation was ranging from 0-1%. Similarly, interspecific variation of Uromastyx hardwikii with Saara asmussi, Uromastyx alfredschmidti, Uromastyx geyri, Uromastyx thomasi, Uromastyx alfredschmidti was 0-12%, 0-19%, 0-19%, 0-20%, 12-19% respectively. The newly produced DNA was submitted to NCBI and accession number was obtained (MW052563.1). Results of current study provided information about the molecular and morphological identification of Genus Uromastyx. In our recommendation, comprehensive molecular based identification of Pakistan’s reptiles is required to report any new or subspecies from country. Resumo Durante o presente estudo, os espécimes foram coletados em locais selecionados do deserto do Cholistan e da Reserva de Caça de Kalabagh, província de Punjab, Paquistão. Cada espécime capturado foi etiquetado com o número do comprovante e medidas morfométricas foram realizadas. O comprimento médio do focinho à cloaca foi de 172,559 ± 1,40 mm, e o peso médio foi de 92,1 ± 1,30 g. O DNA de Uromastyx hardwickii foi amplificado e sequenciado usando o conjunto de primer 16S rRNA. A sequência de DNA obtida mostrou identificação de espécies confiável e clara. Após o corte de bases ambíguas, o fragmento de rRNA 16S obtido tinha 520 pb, enquanto os fragmentos de rRNA 16S alinhados com a sequência próxima do NCBI composta por 510 pb. Sequências semelhantes do gênero Uromastyx foram recuperadas do NCBI em pesquisas de explosão. A árvore de união de vizinhos do gênero Uromastyx foi construída com base na distância-p usando MEGA X. A variação intraespecífica média foi de 0,095 ± 0,01, enquanto a variação intraespecífica foi de 0-1%. Da mesma forma, a variação interespecífica de Uromastyx hardwikii com Saara asmussi, Uromastyx alfredschmidti, Uromastyx geyri, Uromastyx thomasi, Uromastyx alfredschmidti foi de 0-12%, 0-19%, 0-19%, 0-20%, 12-19%, respectivamente. O DNA recém-produzido foi submetido ao NCBI e o número de acesso foi obtido (MW052563.1). Os resultados do estudo atual forneceram informações sobre a identificação molecular e morfológica do Gênero Uromastyx. Em nossa recomendação, a identificação de base molecular abrangente de répteis do Paquistão é necessária para relatar qualquer nova ou subespécie do país.

Dana desa yang dibagikan harus dioptimalkan penyerapannya melalui Peraturan Menteri No 16 Tahun 2018 yang mencakup tentang Prioritas Pembangunan Dana Desa dan untuk meminimalisir terjadinya penyelewengan, setiap Desa harus mempertanggungjawabkan penggunaan dana desa dengan menyusun dan meloprkan Laporan Pertanggungjawaban Dana Desa. Hal mengenai pelaporan pertanggungjawaban dana desa ini kemudian menjadi kesulitan baru bagi perangkat desa karena minimnya pengetahuan mengenai penyusunan laporan pertanggungjawaban keuangan. Objective UK national guidelines recommend pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) in pancreatic cancer. Over 80% of pancreatic cancers are unresectable and managed in non-surgical units. The aim was to assess variation in PERT prescribing, determine factors associated with its use and identify potential actions to improve prescription rates. Design RICOCHET was a national prospective audit of malignant pancreatic, peri-ampullary lesions or malignant biliary obstruction between April and August 2018. This analysis focuses on pancreatic cancer patients and is reported to STROBE guidelines. Multivariable regression analysis was undertaken to assess factors associated with PERT prescribing. Results Rates of PERT prescribing varied among the 1350 patients included. 74.4% of patients with potentially resectable disease were prescribed PERT compared to 45.3% with unresectable disease. PERT prescription varied across surgical hospitals but high prescribing rates did not disseminate out to the respective referring network. PERT prescription appeared to be related to the treatment aim for the patient and the amount of clinician contact a patient has. PERT prescription in potentially resectable patients was positively associated with dietitian referral (p = 0.001) and management at hepaticopancreaticobiliary (p = 0.049) or pancreatic unit (p = 0.009). Prescription in unresectable patients also had a negative association with Charlson comorbidity score 5–7 (p = 0.045) or >7 (p = 0.010) and a positive association with clinical nurse specialist review (p = 0.028). Conclusion Despite national guidance, wide variation and under-treatment with PERT exists. Given that most patients with pancreatic cancer have unresectable disease and are treated in non-surgical hospitals, where prescribing is lowest, strategies to disseminate best practice and overcome barriers to prescribing are urgently required.

A combination of chemotherapy with nonconventional nanoparticle based physical destruction therapy has been proposed clinically to reduce the prospect of evolution of drug resistance in cancer. Superparamagnetic nanoparticles have been actively used for synergetic cancer therapy including magnetic fluid hyperthermia (MFH) guided by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). To explore this direction of potential applications in cancer therapy, we have functionalized superparamagnetic La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 nanoparticles (SPMNPs) with an oleic acid-polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymeric micelle (PM) structure, and loaded it with anticancer cancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) in a high loading capacity (∼60.45%) for in vitro delivery into cancer cells. The micellar structure provided good colloidal stability and biocompatibility. Mangroves of tropical and subtropical shores and deltas contribute to ecosystem functioning and human wellbeing in numerous ways but continue to be lost or degraded worldwide at a rapid pace. Overexploitation driven by poverty is often the root cause of mangrove destruction and degradation. The negative feedback cycle between destruction and poverty can only be broken by justly valuing current or introducing new sustainable livelihood options to foster long-lasting local support for mangroves. The large array of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) that mangroves offer have rarely been developed beyond the subsistence level and remain undervalued as &ldquo, products of the poor&rdquo, In light of the global trends towards sustainability and bio-economy, today they represent a major business opportunity for forest communities to produce high value-added end-user products. Even though mangrove NTFPs have been recognized to have high potential toward inclusive development and poverty alleviation and to be highly gender-equal, the development of mangrove NTFPs has continued to attract very little funding or research interest. Several ecological characteristics make commercialization of mangrove NTFPs particularly challenging. Production at economies of scale, including quality standards, as well as marketing and value chain management are all essential in order to develop these products beyond their subsistence role. To be most effective, a systems perspective on NTFP development is needed, whereby product-market development occurs in unison and based on a participative, inclusive and fair development approach. The species/product of choice for value-added product-market development in any specific community or area will depend on several factors. To address many of the typical constraints and maximize the chances of success, we suggest that the use of village or district-level cooperatives may be particularly useful. A better use of the untapped potential of mangroves for local livelihoods may form a most convincing advocate for local protection and restoration of mangrove forests. Therefore, funding agencies, governments and researchers alike are called to invest in mangrove NTFP development as a way to locally incentivize sustainable mangrove protection and restoration.

Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is an effective treatment for selected patients with chronic heart failure and a prolonged QRS interval. In combination with the pharmacotherapy, it is one of the most powerful recent advances for reducing morbidity and mortality in the challenging heart failure population. The goal of CRT is to restore mechanical synchrony by electrically activating the heart in a synchronized manner in patients with severe systolic left ventricular (LV) dysfunction and a widened QRS. CRT results in both short-term and long-term improvement in cardiac structure and function, leading to enhanced quality of life and, for some populations, enhanced survival. Ongoing and future research will continue to investigate ways to reduce the frequency of non-response to CRT while seeking to expand the pool of patients eligible for this life-saving therapy.

Background Chicken production in the context of nutrition-sensitive agriculture may benefit child nutrition in low-income settings. Objectives This study evaluated effects of 1) a chicken production intervention [African Chicken Genetic Gains (ACGG)], and 2) the ACGG intervention with nutrition-sensitive behavior change communication (BCC) [ACGG + Agriculture to Nutrition (ATONU)], on child nutrition and health outcomes and hypothesized intermediaries. Methods Forty ACGG villages received 25 genetically improved chickens and basic husbandry guidance; of these, 20 ACGG + ATONU villages in addition received a nutrition-sensitive behavior change and homegardening intervention; 20 control clusters received no intervention. We assessed effects of the interventions on height-for-age z scores (HAZ), weight-for-age z scores (WAZ), and weight-for-height z scores (WHZ) at 9 (midline) and 18 mo (endline) through unadjusted and adjusted ordinary least squares (OLS) regressions. We examined the interventions’ effects on hypothesized intermediaries including egg production and consumption, dietary diversity, women's empowerment, income, child morbidities, anemia, and chicken management practices through OLS and log binomial models. Results Data included 829 children aged 0–36 mo at baseline. ACGG + ATONU children had higher midline HAZ [mean difference (MD): 0.28; 95% CI: 0.02, 0.54] than controls. The ACGG group had higher HAZ (MD: 0.28; 95% CI: 0.05, 0.50) and higher WAZ (MD: 0.18; 95% CI: 0.01, 0.36) at endline than controls; after adjusting for potential baseline imbalance, effects were similar but not statistically significant. At endline, differences in ACGG + ATONU children's HAZ and WAZ compared with controls were similar in magnitude to those of ACGG, but not statistically significant. There were no differences in anthropometry between the intervention groups. ACGG + ATONU children had higher dietary diversity and egg consumption than ACGG children at endline. Both interventions showed improvements in chicken management practices. The interventions did not increase anemia, diarrhea, fever, or vomiting, and the ACGG + ATONU group at midline showed reduced risk of fever. Conclusions A chicken production intervention with or without nutrition-sensitive BCC may have benefited child nutrition and did not increase morbidity. This paper presents an improved two-switch bridgeless PFC SEPIC (TSBPFC SEPIC) structure for reducing current total harmonic distortion (THD) and minimize circulating current. A conventional PFC SEPIC structure which has an integration between SEPIC and full-bridge rectifier possess some problems high current THDi output voltage ripple and a low PF. The existing bridgeless PFC SEPIC structure has two input inductors (L1 and L2) that causes circulating current and thus producing high current THDi at input source. In order to improve the existing structure of bridgeless PFC SEPIC, the proposed converter an additional capacitor is connected in parallel of input diode. In addition, comparisons between two converter which are existing bridgeless PFC SEPIC and Improved TSBPFC SEPIC structure are discussed. The prototype with specification of 100 W and 48 V dc output voltage is developed. The results show THDi of 0.99% and power factor of 0.98 are achieved with 50 kHz switching frequency.

This research made three kinds of briquettes from various biomass waste, including alaban wood charcoal and rubber seed shells mixed with coal bottom ash and coal fly ash. The purpose of the study was to obtain the characteristics and quality of briquette combustion. Making briquettes is by drying, grinding, and sifting raw materials then mixed with adhesive, printing and drying. Briquettes were made with variations in composition and pressure and the particle size of the material passing through the 50 and 250 mesh sieves. Briquettes produced from alaban wood charcoal and coal bottom ash, or fly ash, obtained more bottom ash or fly ash composition characteristics. The moisture content and calorific value would be lower while the ash content was higher. While the initial ignition time, the combustion duration is getting longer, but the burning rate would decrease. Briquettes made from rubber seed shells and coal bottom ash obtained variations in composition and pressure that affect the characteristics and quality of combustion. The higher the rubber seed shell composition and pressure, the lower the water and ash content, but the calorific value increased.

Cytochrome c550, a diheme protein from the thermophilic bacterium Thermus thermophilus, is involved in an alternative respiration pathway allowing the detoxification of sulfite ions. It transfers the two electrons released from the oxidation of sulfite in a sulfite:cytochrome c oxidoreductase (SOR) enzyme to heme/copper oxidases via the monoheme cytochrome c552. It consists of two conformationally independent and structurally different domains (the C- and N-terminal) connected by a flexible linker. Both domains harbor one heme moiety. We report here the redox properties of the full-length protein and the individual C- and N-terminal fragments. We show by UV/Vis and EPR potentiometric titrations that the two fragments exhibit very similar potentials, despite their different environments. In the full-length protein, however, the N-terminal heme is easier to reduce than the C-terminal one, due to cooperative interactions. This finding is consistent with the kinetic measurements which showed that the N-terminal domain only accepts electrons from the SOR. Cytochrome c552 is able to interact with its partners both through electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions as could be shown by measuring efficient electron transfer at gold electrodes modified with charged and hydrophobic groups, respectively. The coupling of electrochemistry with infrared spectroscopy allowed us to monitor the conformational changes induced by electron transfer to each heme separately and to both simultaneously.

The disposal of plastic caused serious environmental pollution to both land and sea. Chicken feather wastes also contributed to pollution problem and its value has not been fully utilized. This study aimed to produce biodegradable film by utilizing keratin extracted from chicken feathers. Initially, the keratin was extracted from chicken feather prior to the optimization of the keratin biofilm towards the tensile strength. The involved parameters were ratio of keratin toglycerol, ratio of keratin to PVA and drying temperature. The biofilm was proceeded to morphological, chemical structure and colour characterization analysis using SEM, FTIR and chromameter, respectively. The keratin obtained was 0.1296mg/ml. The obtained keratin was then used in the formulation of biofilm. The biofilm with 40:50:10 (volume ratio of keratin: PVA:glycerol) dried at 60°C showed the optimum tensile strength. The FTIR showed the presence of amide and hydroxyl groups. From biodegradability test, it was proven that blend of keratin, PVA and glycerol films can be degraded by microorganisms in soil in which films with higher concentration of glycerol degrading faster compared to those with lesser glycerol concentration. Thus, it can be concluded that the chicken feather keratin offers an alternative as biofilm for biodegradable plastic.
