1. Hydroclimatic variability in the Levant during the early last glacial (∼ 117–75 ka) derived from micro-facies analyses of deep Dead Sea sediments

Abstract: The new sediment record from the deep Dead Sea basin (ICDP core 5017-1) provides a unique archive for hydroclimatic variability in the Levant. Here, we present high-resolution sediment facies analysis and elemental composition by micro-X-ray fluorescence (µXRF) scanning of core 5017-1 to trace lake levels and responses of the regional hydroclimatology during the time interval from ca. 117 to 75 ka, i.e. the transition between the last interglacial and the onset of the last glaciation. We distinguished six major micro-facies types and interpreted these and their alterations in the core in terms of relative lake level changes. The two end-member facies for highest and lowest lake levels are (a) up to several metres thick, greenish sediments of alternating aragonite and detrital marl laminae (aad) and (b) thick halite facies, respectively. Intermediate lake levels are characterised by detrital marls with varying amounts of aragonite, gypsum or halite, reflecting lower-amplitude, shorter-term variability. Two intervals of pronounced lake level drops occurred at ∼ 110–108 ± 5 and ∼ 93–87 ± 7 ka. They likely coincide with stadial conditions in the central Mediterranean (Melisey I and II pollen zones in Monticchio) and low global sea levels during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5d and 5b. However, our data do not support the current hypothesis of an almost complete desiccation of the Dead Sea during the earlier of these lake level low stands based on a recovered gravel layer. Based on new petrographic analyses, we propose that, although it was a low stand, this well-sorted gravel layer may be a vestige of a thick turbidite that has been washed out during drilling rather than an in situ beach deposit. Two intervals of higher lake stands at ∼ 108–93 ± 6 and ∼ 87–75 ± 7 ka correspond to interstadial conditions in the central Mediterranean, i.e. pollen zones St. Germain I and II in Monticchio, and Greenland interstadials (GI) 24+23 and 21 in Greenland, as well as to sapropels S4 and S3 in the Mediterranean Sea. These apparent correlations suggest a close link of the climate in the Levant to North Atlantic and Mediterranean climates during the time of the build-up of Northern Hemisphere ice shields in the early last glacial period.

2. Comparison of high-speed transportation systems in special consideration of investment costs

Abstract: In this paper a substantial comparison of different high-speed transportation systems and an approach to stochastic cost estimations are provided. Starting from the developments in Europe, the high-speed traffic technical characteristics of high-speed railways and Maglev systems are compared. But for a comprehensive comparison more criterions must be included and led to a wider consideration and the development of a multi-criteria comparison of high-speed transportation systems. In the second part a stochastic approach to cost estimations of infrastructure projects is encouraged. Its advantages in comparison with the traditional proceeding are presented and exemplify the practical implementation.

Abstract: The occurrence of motor/vocal tics, i.e. "extra-movements" and/or "extra-vocalizations", is the leading diagnostic criterion for tic disorders. We show that extra-movements are common also in healthy controls, so that a surplus of movements per se is not indicative of the presence of a tic disorder. This questions the usefulness of DSM-5 criteria for tic disorders in clinical practice. Apparently, it is not solely a surplus of movements which defines tic disorders. Abstract: BACKGROUND: The prevalence of atrial fibrillation(AF) and diabetes mellitus is rising to epidemic proportions. We aimed to assess the impact of diabetes on the management and outcomes of patients with AF.METHODS: The EORP-AF General Long-Term Registry is a prospective, observational registry from 250 centres across 27 European countries. Outcomes of interest were as follows: i)rhythm control interventions; ii)quality of life; iii)healthcare resource utilisation; and iv)major adverse events.RESULTS: Of 11,028 patients with AF, the median age was 71 (63-77) years and 2537 (23.0%) had diabetes. Median follow-up was 24 months. Diabetes was related to increased use of anticoagulation but less rhythm control interventions. Using multivariable analysis, at 2-year follow-up, patients with diabetes were associated with greater levels of anxiety (p = 0.038) compared to those without diabetes. Overall, diabetes was associated with worse health during follow-up, as indicated by Health Utility Score and Visual Analogue Scale. Healthcare resource utilisation was greater with diabetes in terms of length of hospital stay (8.1 (±8.2) vs. 6.1 (±6.7) days); cardiology and internal medicine/general practitioner visits; and emergency room admissions. Diabetes was an independent risk factor of major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE; HR 1.26 [95% CI, 1.04-1.52]), all-cause mortality (HR 1.28 [95% CI, 1.08-1.52]), and cardiovascular mortality (HR 1.41 [95% CI, 1.09-1.83]).CONCLUSION: In this contemporary AF cohort, diabetes was present in 1 in 4 patients and it served as an independent risk factor for reduced quality of life, greater healthcare resource utilisation and excess MACE, all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality. There was increased use of anticoagulation therapy in diabetes but with less rhythm control interventions.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Cardiac troponins (cTn) have been reported to be predictors for adverse outcomes in atrial fibrillation (AF), patients, but their actual use is still unclear.AIM: To assess the factors associated with cTn testing in routine practice and evaluate the association with outcomes.METHODS: Patients enrolled in the ESC-EHRA EORP-AF General Long-Term Registry were stratified into 3 groups according to cTn levels as (i) cTn not tested, (ii) cTn in range (≤99th percentile), (iii) cTn elevated (>99th percentile). The composite outcome of any thromboembolism /any acute coronary syndrome/cardiovascular (CV) death, defined as Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events (MACE) and all-cause death were the main endpoints.RESULTS: Among 10 445 AF patients (median age 71 years, 40.3% females) cTn were tested in 2834 (27.1%). cTn was elevated in 904/2834 (31.9%) and in-range in 1930/2834 (68.1%) patients. Female sex, in-hospital enrollment, first-detected AF, CV risk factors, history of coronary artery disease, and atypical AF symptoms were independently associated with cTn testing. Elevated cTn were independently associated with a higher risk for MACE (Model 1, hazard ratio [HR] 1.74, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.40-2.16, Model 2, HR 1.62, 95% CI 1.28-2.05; Model 3 HR 1.76, 95% CI 1.37-2.26) and all-cause death (Model 1, HR 1.45, 95% CI 1.21-1.74; Model 2, HR 1.36, 95% CI 1.12-1.66; Model 3, HR 1.38, 95% CI 1.12-1.71).CONCLUSIONS: Elevated cTn levels were associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality and adverse CV events. Clinical factors that might enhance the need to rule out CAD were associated with cTn testing.

Abstract: The vanadyl pyrophosphate (VPP) based catalyst is unique in converting n-butane selectively (60–70%) into maleic anhydride (MAN), whereas a MAN selectivity of 20% may be regarded as high for structurally different catalyst systems. We present novel vanadium phosphorus oxides and mixed metal phosphate solid solutions tested for n-butane oxidation to MAN with a selectivity of >30%. The majority of the catalysts were prepared by solution combustion synthesis. (V1-xWx)OPO4 with αII structure was found to be more active and selective in the oxidation of n-butane compared to β-VOPO4. By adjusting the tungsten content the oxidation state of vanadium in (V1-xWx)OPO4 can be tuned between 4.74 and 4.99, which is regarded as a key factor for MAN production. All catalysts were structurally stable, but the specific surface area increased during the reaction, as detected by X-ray diffraction and N2 physisorption, respectively. (V1-xMox)OPO4 was also stable, but the MAN selectivity was lower compared to β-VOPO4. Low conversions result from the low surface area of the screening samples, however, could be overcome by advanced synthesis protocols.

Abstract: Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is an industrially applied technique for thin film deposition. The vast majority of processes target flat substrates rather than powders. For ALD on powders, new processes are needed, as different reaction conditions are required. Here, two setups are described in detail, which enhance the ALD process development for powders. The first setup described is capable of directly measuring the vapor pressure of a given precursor by a capacitance diaphragm gauge. Promising precursors can be pre-selected, and suitable precursor saturation temperatures can be determined. The second setup consists of four parallel reactors with individual temperature zones to screen the optimal ALD temperature window in a time efficient way. Identifying the precursor saturation temperature beforehand and subsequently performing the first ALD half cycle in the parallel setup at four different reactor temperatures simultaneously will drastically reduce process development times. Validation of both setups is shown for the well-known ALD precursors, trimethylaluminum to deposit aluminum oxide and diethyl zinc to deposit zinc oxide, both on amorphous silica powder.

Abstract: Extensive vein-type mica deposits at Elahera in north-central Sri Lanka are associated with meta-ultrabasite (MUB) boudins in impure marbles. Mineralization occurs as discontinuous, lenticular bodies concordant with the impure marbles at the contacts with MUB. Impure marbles show typical granulite facies assemblages overprinted by retrograde minerals. The original assemblages of MUBs have been texturally and mineralogically replaced completely, but the alteration did not progress into impure marble country rocks. The alteration products are mainly phlogopite with minor tremolite, calcite and quartz. The micas have likely been formed as a result of the breakdown of diopside in the MUBs. Rock textures and chemical data of whole rocks and minerals suggest that the alteration is due to infiltration of external hydrothermal fluid through the contacts of MUB boudinage layer and impure marbles. The calcium, magnesium and CO2 required for formation of alteration minerals may have been acquired from the host rock, whereas silica, K, Cl and Al were externally derived and transported with the fluid. The most likely source of hydrothermal fluid is exsolved fluid from nearby granitic pegmatites, based on field relations showing preferred contents of mica near pegmatite contacts.

Abstract: Concentrations of meteoric 10 Be extracted from detrital Amazon River sediment are strongly particle size-dependent. Such grain size dependency presents a formidable obstacle to routine applications of meteoric cosmogenic 10 Be to basin-wide erosion studies. In this study, we explore means to eliminate these grain size effects in bedload from rivers of the Amazon basin by measuring 10 Be/ 9 Be ratios after selective chemical extraction of reactive authigenic phases. These phases mainly comprise Fe–Mn-(hydr)oxides that are the main carriers of 9 Be and 10 Be. We explore the distribution of 10 Be and its stable 9 Be counterpart between these phases and the partitioning of Be into remaining silicate fractions. This extraction procedure was carried out on bedload samples comprising the three main tectonic units of the Amazon basin, namely the Andes, the Guyana and Brazilian Shields, and the central Amazonian lowlands. For all samples, extracted 10 Be concentrations show a strong decrease with increasing particle size, with up to 20 times more 10 Be extracted from the finest analyzed ( 10 Be concentrations mostly to subsequent dilution by quartz in coarse bedload. However, when normalized to stable 9 Be concentrations that are also extracted from reactive phases, grain size effects are effectively removed and the resulting “reactive” 10 Be/ 9 Be ratio is uniform for all particle sizes. The reactive 10 Be/ 9 Be ratio thus offers important advantages over methods employing single meteoric 10 Be concentrations, such that this ratio can now be developed as quantitative tracer for Earth surface processes.

Abstract: The back-titration of atomic oxygen chemisorbed on metallic copper using carbon monoxide is investigated by microcalorimetry. Results from simulations based on a microkinetic model of the back-titration are used for processing of microcalorimetric data. In addition, surface oxidation of copper by nitrous oxide is investigated by microcalorimetry. The results are compared with results obtained by nitrous oxide reactive frontal chromatography and by static oxygen adsorption studied by microcalorimetry. The heat of adsorption of nitrous oxide on copper amounts to 304 kJ mol−1, and the heat of adsorption of carbon monoxide on surfaceoxidized copper is in the range from 120 to 70 kJ mol−1.

Abstract: Standard entropies of adsorption (Δs0) of CO on different materials (Cu catalysts, Au catalysts, ZnO and to TiO2) are obtained from static adsorption microcalorimetry, adsorption isobars and temperature-programmed desorption, based on the thermodynamics of adsorption on energetically heterogeneous surfaces. Vibrational entropies of the surfaces svibα are normally between the rotational and the standard translational entropy of CO in gas phase, and decrease with increasing adsorption energy, which agrees with the explanation of statistical thermodynamics. Δs0 reflects both the mobility of adsorbates and the specific adsorbate-adsorbent interaction. Limits for reasonable values of the entropy of adsorption are proposed.

Abstract: Die etablierte radiologische Untersuchungstechnik fur das Staging des Hodgkin-Lymphoms ist die Computertomographie (CT). Aufgrund ihrer exzellenten Ortsauflosung ermoglicht die CT sowohl die Detektion eines nodalen als auch eines extranodalen Befalls. Die Magnetresonanztomographie (MRT) ist ein weiteres Schnittbildverfahren, welches mittlerweile als ebenso aussagekraftig wie die CT im Staging des Hodgkin-Lymphoms angesehen wird. Wahrend die CT die Methode der Wahl fur die Evaluation eines Lungenbefalls darstellt, ist die MRT die uberlegene Methode fur die Diagnostik eines Befalls des Gehirns, des Myelons sowie des Knochenmarks. Probleme bereiten der Diagnostik immer noch die Detektion eines nodalen Befalls in normal grosen Lymphknoten sowie die Beurteilung residueller Raumforderungen nach Therapie. Die Positronenemissionstomographie (PET) mit 18F-Fluorodeoxyglukose (FDG) detektiert ebenfalls nodale und extranodale Lymphommanifestationen und beeinflusst das Staging insbesondere bei fruhen und intermediaren Stadien des Hodgkin-Lymphoms. Wahrend und nach Abschluss der Chemotherapie liefert die PET betrachtliche prognostische Informationen. Die Einbindung der PET in das Behandlungsmanagement ist jedoch noch Gegenstand laufender klinischer Studien.

Abstract: The strong metal-support interactions occurring in Cu/ZnO catalysts are significantly influenced by the pretreatment. The objective of this contribution is to demonstrate that by carefully reducing binary Cu/ZnO and ternary Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 samples in hydrogen under the same conditions, the Cu metal surface is accessible in identical states to adsorption microcalorimetry, TPD experiments and transmission FTIR spectroscopy using carbon monoxide as probe molecule. All techniques show that a fully reduced and clean Cu surface is resulting from a thorough reduction in flowing high-purity hydrogen. The adsorption of CO on this Cu surface is fully reversible at room temperature, with heats of adsorption ranging between 70 kJ/mol at low coverages and 45 kJ/mol at high coverages.

Abstract: In contrast to younger patients, the prognosis of elderly patients with advanced Hodgkin's disease (HD) has not improved substantially over the last 20 years. We thus carried out a prospectively randomized study (HD9(elderly)) to compare the BEACOPP regimen in this setting against standard COPP-ABVD. Between February 1993 and 1998, 75 patients aged 66-75 years with newly diagnosed HD in advanced stages were recruited into the HD9 trial as a separate stratum (HD9(elderly)). Patients were assigned to eight alternating cycles of COPP and ABVD or eight cycles of BEACOPP in baseline doses. Radiotherapy was given to initial bulky or residual disease. In total, 68 of 75 registered patients were assessable: 26 were treated with COPP-ABVD and 42 with BEACOPP baseline. There were no significant differences between COPP-ABVD and BEACOPP in terms of complete remission (76%), overall survival (50%) and freedom from treatment failure (FFTF) (46%) at 5 years. At a median follow-up of 80 months, a total of 37 patients died: 14/26 patients (54%) treated with COPP-ABVD and 23/42 patients (55%) with BEACOPP. Two patients (8%) treated with COPP-ABVD and nine patients (21%) treated with BEACOPP died of acute toxicity. Hodgkin-specific FFTF at 5 years was 55% after COPP-ABVD and 74% after BEACOPP (P=0.13). Thus, there are no differences in survival between these regimens in elderly patients.

Abstract: Objectives The objectives were to determine the acute toxicities of concurrent carboplatin and radiation therapy in the primary treatment of cervix cancer and to ascertain the antitumor activity of this regimen. Methods Patients with stage IB-1 to IVA untreated primary cervix cancers were eligible for enrollment into this study. Carboplatin was administered on a weekly basis with external radiation therapy (ERT). Low-dose brachytherapy was given after completion of ERT. Acute toxicities and response to treatment were assessed. Results Thirty-one evaluable patients were enrolled. The majority of patients had early stage disease. Carboplatin was successfully administered in 175 out of 186 (94%) planned treatments. All patients completed the prescribed course of radiation therapy. The mean treatment time was 50 days (36–73). There were no treatment delays for neutropenia or gastrointestinal toxicity. No patient was hospitalized for treatment related toxicities. Gastrointestinal toxicity equivalent to grade 3 or 4 was not reported. The objective tumor response based on physical exam findings and computed tomography measurements was 90%. Conclusion Patients with cervix cancer can be treated on schedule with concurrent carboplatin and pelvic radiation therapy. This regimen is well tolerated and produces excellent response rates.

Abstract: A modular setup for Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) on high-surface powder substrates in fixed bed reactors with a gravimetric in situ monitoring was developed. The design and operation are described in detail. An integrated magnetically suspended balance records mass changes during ALD. The highly versatile setup consists of three modular main units: a dosing unit, a reactor unit, and a downstream unit. The reactor unit includes the balance, a large fixed bed reactor, and a quartz crystal microbalance. The dosing unit is equipped with a complex manifold to deliver gases and gaseous reagents including three different ALD precursors, five oxidizing or reducing agents, and two purge gas lines. The system employs reactor temperatures and pressures in the range of 25-600 °C and 10-3 to 1 bar, respectively. Typically, powder batches between 100 mg and 50 g can be coated. The capabilities of the setup are demonstrated by coating mesoporous SiO2 powder with a thin AlOx (submono) layer using three cycles with trimethylaluminium and H2O. The self-limiting nature of the deposition has been verified with the in situ gravimetric monitoring and full saturation curves are presented. The process parameters were used for a scale-up in a large fixed bed reactor. The samples were analyzed with established analytics such as X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption, transmission electron microscopy, and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry.

Abstract: We examined the effects of separate removal experiments of two generalist consumers, the white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus) and the eastern chipmunk (Tam- ias striatus), on nest predation rates of forest songbirds. Mice are numerically dominant at our study sites and were shown to be strong predators in other predator-prey interactions, such as those involving gypsy moths. Therefore, we hypothesized that removal of mice would result in decreased levels of nest predation relative to control treatments with a complete predator assemblage, but that the removal of chipmunks would not result in decreased nest predation. Both hypotheses were supported. Mice depredated .60% of artificial nests in control plots (mouse populations intact), whereas chipmunks depredated ;20%. Daily nest mortality rates in mouse removal treatments were less than half the rates in controls but were virtually identical between chipmunk removal and control treatments. Nonetheless, when we examined predation rates across plots in which the density of mice varied naturally, total daily mortality rates declined as the density of mice increased. This pattern occurred because mortality from non-mouse predators decreased as the density of mice increased and overwhelmed increasing mortality from mice to drive the overall dy- namics of the system. Analysis of the relationships between the density of mice and pre- dation rates by mice as a function of the abundance of natural food in their environment revealed probable reasons for these conflicting results. We suggest that high local densities of mice deplete resources for larger, non-mouse predators, which preferentially occupy areas of few mice and high local food abundance. In these areas, songbirds may be faced with higher overall nest predation dominated by non-mouse predators. Mice thus influence nest predation rates through both direct and indirect pathways.

Abstract: PNH is a disorder of the pluripotent stem cells resulting in a deficient expression of membrane-bound GPI-anchored proteins in different cell types. Several flow cytometric approaches are designed to detect this antigen deficiency. But they all require drawing and testing of normal samples as control. Therefore, in the present study two flow cytometric assays for the detection of CD55 and CD59 deficiency in erythrocytes (REDQUANT CD55/CD59) and granulocytes (CELLQUANT CD55/CD59) are proposed. Precalibrated beads are used to define the cut off between normal and deficient cell populations. The specificity of the tests has been evaluated in healthy blood donors (n=52) resulting in a clear and reproducible cut off (3%) for the normal percentage of GPI-deficient cells. This cut off has been confirmed in leukaemia and lymphoma patients not suspected for developing PNH. The sensitivity has been tested in patients suffering from known PNH (n=23). Both tests performed in combination allowed a reliable detection of PNH in all patients showing antigen deficiencies in both cell types in most patients (20/23). In contrast, the PNH clones in the investigated patients with MDS (4/19) or AA (4/22) were present in granulocytes or erythrocytes, only. This underlines the necessity of analysing erythrocytes as well as granulocytes. Preliminary data regarding a possible correlation between disease activity and percentage of antigen-deficient cells lead to the assumption that haemolytic crises can only be determined on granulocytes whereas deficient erythrocytes disappeared due to complement-mediated lysis of the PNH clone. In conclusion, the combination of the test kits enables the differential diagnosis of PNH clones in a standardized, simple and rapid approach which may have therapeutic consequences.

Abstract: Scanning calorimetric methods permit determination of heat capacities at high temperatures up to 1600°C. For disk systems with power compensation application limits are in order of 700°C, and for cylindrical systems with electrical calibration up to 1000°C. For the high temperature range above 1000°C DSC plates and a cylindrical calorimetric systems based on the CALVET principle ('MULTI HTC’) are known. For cylindrical calorimetric systems the precision of the Cp data is between 2 and 5% even at high temperatures without any requirements on the kind and shape of samples. These results are better than data provided by DSC plate systems.

Abstract: Two polyphase gneiss samples (Western Alps, Switzerland) consisting of quartz, albite, muscovite and microcline have been investigated with respect to anisotropic physical properties - residual and applied strain - and crystallographic preferred orientations. The samples were taken in close vicinity to a fault structure. For texture evaluation the 'Rietveld texture analysis' has been applied, because reliable texture analysis of polyphase rocks from pole figures is problematic due to multiple peak overlaps. The quartz textures of both samples are strong and rather similar, whereas albite and microcline show a nearly random distribution. In contrast, the mica texture is pronounced and complex. The basal plane normals of muscovite are preferably oriented parallel to [-direction of the structural reference frame and switch to [-direction with residual orientations in [ and a transition into the [-[-plane within the fault. This might be the result of quartz recrystallization, if mica is used as reference according the applied stress field. A residual strain scan has been carried out along the axis of a cylindrical sample (d = 30 mm, l = 60 mm). Residual strain values of quartz have been detected with a minimum of-1.6×10-3, and maximum strain values of 1.2×10-3. Uniaxial compression experiments in discrete steps up to 53 MPa were performed, for each step the applied and residual strains were determined. The strain increases up to 28 MPa; surprisingly, lower strain values are detected at higher applied stresses.

Abstract: ZusammenfassungBei 157 Patienten und 14 Familienangehörigen wurde die Response gegenüber aktiviertem Protein C (APC) in drei unterschiedlichen Tests bestimmt und mit dem Ergebnis der Genotypisierung verglichen. Die Ermittlung der laboreigenen Referenzwerte erfolgte aus Plasmaproben von 96 anamnestisch gesunden Probanden mit normalem Genotyp. Zur Bestimmung der APC-Response wurden folgende Testsysteme eingesetzt: Test Immunochrom® APC-Response, Coatest® APC™ Resistance und Coatest® APC™ Resistance mit einer Verdünnung des Plasmas mit Faktor-V-Mangelplasma. Die Testmodifikation mit Verdünnung des Patientenplasmas mit Faktor-V-Mangelplasma erbrachte mit Ausnahme von Patienten unter Vollheparinisierung eine gute Trennung zwischen Wildtyp und Faktor-V-Mutation. Dieser Test reduziert jedoch offensichtlich die Aussage auf die Faktor-V-Mutation. Der Test Immunochrom® APC-Response zeigte unabhängig von einer Antikoagulation eine gute Übereinstimmung mit dem Ergebnis der Genotypisierung. Obwohl ein großer Teil der APC-Resistenz assoziiert ist mit einer Mutation im Faktor-V-Gen (Leiden-Mutation) sind beide Begriffe nicht synonym. Pathologische Ratios bei Patienten mit einem Wildtyp unterstreichen die Notwendigkeit zur Bestimmung der funktionellen Response und des Genotypes, ihre Ursache bedarf weiterer Abklärung.

Abstract: The heterogeneous nucleation rate of μ-cordierite at the surface of cordierite glass (2MgO·2Al2O3·5SiO2) is discussed in terms of classical nucleation theory (CNT). Calculations are based on experimental viscosity data and estimates of the melting temperature and melting enthalpy of μ-cordierite from calorimetric measurements. A virtual melting temperature of the metastable μ-cordierite, TμM, was estimated, by means of X-ray measurements, from the primary occurrence of μ-cordierite after brief thermal treatment. TμM was found to lie in the range 1300–1467°C. The molar enthalpy of melting, ΔHμM, was calculated from calorimetric measurements and literature data. Referring to the molar weight of the formula unit, M = 585 g mol−1, ΔHμM could be narrowed to the range 170–190 kJ mol−1. The heterogeneous volume nucleation rate, I∗(T) , was estimated from the apparent nucleation rate of μ-cordierite which was previously studied at fractured and polished surfaces of cordierite glass by means of transmitting light microscopy. I∗(T) steadily increases up to 235 K above the glass transition temperature at 815°C without reaching a maximum. In the present paper, this exceptional temperature-dependence is discussed in terms of CNT. The best fit of experimental data was obtained for TμM ≈ 1467°C, a low liquid-crystal interfacial free energy, σ, and a low activity of nucleating substrates, Ф, if σФ 1 3 ≈ 100 mJ m −2 is valid.

Abstract: Severe stone deterioration is evident at the Cologne cathedral. In particular, the “Drachenfels” trachyte, which was the building material of the medieval construction period, shows significant structural deterioration as well as massive formation of gypsum crusts. The present article investigates crust formation on limestone, sandstone, and volcanic rock from the Cologne cathedral as well as from the Xanten and Altenberg cathedrals. These three buildings, showing varying degrees of deterioration, are located in different areas and exposed to varying industrial, urban, and rural pollution. Thin laminar and black framboidal crusts form on calcareous as well as silicate stone. The lack of a significant intrinsic calcium and sulfur source for the formation of the gypsum crusts on the Drachenfels trachyte indicates major extrinsic environmental impact: a sufficient offer of SOx from pollutant fluxes as well as external calcium sources (e.g., pollution, mortars, neighboring calcite stones). Chemical analyses reveal strong gypsum enrichment within the crusts as well as higher concentrations of lead and other pollutants (arsenic, antimony, bismuth, tin, etc.), which generally can be linked to traffic and industry. The formation of weathering crusts in an industrial environment is clearly distinguishable from that in rural areas. Scanning electron microscopy observations confirm that the total amount of pollution is less at the Altenberg cathedral than at the Cologne and Xanten cathedrals. XRF analyses show that the formation of gypsum occurs in lower amounts at Altenberg. This correlates well with the measured SO2 content and the intensity of the decay at the different locations. Furthermore, the different types of crusts, e.g., framboidal and laminar, can be differentiated and assigned to the different locations. The black weathering crusts on the silicate Drachenfels trachyte contribute to the degradation of the historic building material. They enhance mechanical moisture-related deterioration processes and the decay by chemical corrosion of rock-forming minerals. Although SO2 concentrations in air have shown a strong decrease over the past 30 years, degradation in connection with weathering crusts is still observed. This indicates that not only contemporary or recent emissions, but also past pollutant concentrations have to be considered. peerReviewed

Abstract: Bile duct cancers are increasing in frequency while being difficult to diagnose. Currently available endoscopic imaging devices used in the biliary tree are low resolution with poor image quality, leading to inadequate evaluation of indeterminate biliary strictures. However, a new ultrathin and flexible cholangioscope system has been successfully demonstrated in a human subject. This mini-cholangioscope system uses a scanning fiber endoscope (SFE) as a forward-imaging guidewire, dimensions of 1.2-mm diameter and 3-m length. Full color video (500-line resolution at 30Hz) is the standard SFE imaging mode using spiral scanning of red, green, and blue laser light at low power. Image-guided operation of the biopsy forceps was demonstrated in healthy human bile ducts with and without saline flushing. The laser-based video imaging can be switched to various modes to enhance tissue markers of disease, such as widefield fluorescence and enhanced spectral imaging. In parallel work, biochemical discrimination of tissue health in pig bile duct has been accomplished using fiberoptic delivery of pulsed UV illumination and time-resolved autofluorescence spectroscopic measurements. Implementation of time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy for biochemical assessment of the bile duct wall is being done through a secondary endoscopic channel. Preliminary results indicate that adequate SNR levels (> 30 dB) can be achieved through a 50 micron fiber, which could serve as an optical biopsy probe. The SFE is an ideal mini-cholangioscope for integration of both tissue and molecular specific image contrast in the future. This will provide the physician with unprecedented abilities to target biopsy locations and perform endoscopically-guided therapies.

Abstract: pH Measurements were carried out by means of cells containing Pt/hydrogen and glass electrodes, both equipped with the same type of ground glass sleeve junction carefully selected with respect to the leak rate. The cells were calibrated with the same set of standard buffers using multiple point calibration with linear regression. The slopes of the regression lines were compared with the theoretical (Nernst) slope of the E versus pH function and yielded the electromotive efficiency of the two cells. 48. Nausea, vomiting, and heartburn in pregnancy: a prospective look at risk, treatment, and outcome

Abstract: To examine risk factors, treatment, and outcomes for nausea/vomiting (N/V) and heartburn during pregnancy.We included 2731 women from a prospective cohort study of gallbladder disease in pregnancy. Subjects completed questionnaires at enrollment, early third trimester, and 4-6 weeks postpartum. We used logistic regression to examine independent predictors of upper gastrointestinal symptoms.Ninety-five percent of pregnant women experienced either heartburn and/or N/V. Independent predictors for heartburn included prepregnancy heartburn (OR 5.28, 95% CI 3.78-7.37), multigravidity, prepregnancy body mass index, and pregnancy weight gain. Independent predictors for N/V included prepregnancy N/V (OR 2.25, 95% CI 1.52-3.31), other digestive problems prepregnancy, younger age, single gestation, and carrying a female fetus. 11% of women with N/V and 47% of women with heartburn used pharmacologic therapy. Infants born to women with heartburn had significantly higher birth weights (p = 0.03), but gestational age at delivery was not significantly different. N/V was not associated with birth weight or gestational age at delivery. 19.7% of women with heartburn during pregnancy reported postpartum heartburn.Heartburn and N/V are common pregnancy symptoms, particularly among women with a history of such symptoms. Neither condition appears to adversely affect the outcome of pregnancy. Pregnancy-related heartburn predisposes to early postpartum heartburn.

Abstract: In situ falling-sphere technique viscosity measurements in a DIA-type multi-anvil apparatus – MAX80 at beamline F2.1 at DESY / HASYLAB, Hamburg, Germany – have been performed. The viscosity was measured following Stokes law by evaluation of X-radiography sequences taken by a CCD-camera. Powdered basalt, dacite, and diabase samples were measured at pressures of 0.5 and 1 GPa and temperatures of 1890 K. After pressurization the temperature produced by an internal graphite heater was increased up to sample melting observed by X-ray diffraction and X-radiography. The results cover a data range from 3.5 Pa s (basalt at 1 GPa) and 195.5 Pa s (diabase at 0,5 GPa) and are in good agreement with published data.
