Objective: In early stages of disease, the differential diagnosis between Parkinson’s Disease (PD) and atypical parkinsonism, such as Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), could be challenging. Growing attention has recently been dedicated to investigating neuropsychological markers of degenerative parkinsonism. The Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test (ROCFT) copy score was hypothesized able to differentiate PSP from PD. However, ROCFT is a drawing test requiring multiple cognitive abilities and it is still unknown which of them assumes an important role in PSP performance. Using a qualitative scoring system, we investigated which cognitive abilities underpin the PSP performance at the ROCFT copy trial. Moreover, we evaluated usefulness of the BQSS scores in discriminating PSP from PD. Methods: Thirty PSP-Richardson’s Syndrome (PSP-RS) patients, 30 PD patients, and 30 healthy control (HC) comparable for age, education, and gender were enrolled. All subjects underwent a neuropsychological evaluation; ROCFT copy were evaluated with the 36-Point Score and with the Boston Qualitative Scoring System (BQSS). Results: PSP-RS patients performed worse in ROCFT 36-Point Score and in several BQSS scores compared to other groups. Most suitable scores discriminating PSP-RS from PD were “Perseveration” and “Vertical Expansion” of BQSS. A logistic regression model considering “Perseveration” and “Vertical Expansion” showed a diagnostic accuracy of 83,3% for PSP-RS condition. Conclusion: our findings showed that “Perseveration” and “Vertical Expansion” BQSS scores were useful in discriminating PSP-RS from PD. “Perseveration” and “Vertical Expansion” BQSS scores might be included in the cognitive evaluation along with quantitative scores when PSP diagnosis is considered.

Remnant radio galaxies represent the dying phase of radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN). Large samples of remnant radio galaxies are important for quantifying the radio galaxy life cycle. The remnants of radio-loud AGN can be identified in radio sky surveys based on their spectral index, or, complementary, through visual inspection based on their radio morphology. However, this is extremely time-consuming when applied to the new large and sensitive radio surveys. Here we aim to reduce the amount of visual inspection required to find AGN remnants based on their morphology, through supervised machine learning trained on an existing sample of remnant candidates. For a dataset of 4107 radio sources, with angular sizes larger than 60 arcsec, from the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) Two-Metre Sky Survey second data release (LoTSS-DR2), we started with 151 radio sources that were visually classified as 'AGN remnant candidate'. We derived a wide range of morphological features for all radio sources from their corresponding Stokes-I images: from simple source catalogue-derived properties, to clustered Haralick-features, and self-organising map (SOM) derived morphological features. We trained a random forest classifier to separate the 'AGN remnant candidates' from the not yet inspected sources. The SOM-derived features and the total to peak flux ratio of a source are shown to be most salient to the classifier. We estimate that $31\pm5\%$ of sources with positive predictions from our classifier will be labelled 'AGN remnant candidates' upon visual inspection, while we estimate the upper bound of the $95\%$ confidence interval for 'AGN remnant candidates' in the negative predictions at $8\%$. Phased array feeds (PAFs) are multi-element receivers in the focal plane of a telescope that make it possible to simultaneously form multiple beams on the sky by combining the complex gains of the individual antenna elements. Recently, the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) was upgraded with PAF receivers to carry out several observing programs, including two imaging surveys and a time-domain survey. The Apertif imaging surveys use a configuration of 40 partially overlapping compound beams (CBs) simultaneously formed on the sky and arranged in an approximately rectangular shape. Aims. This work is aimed at characterising the response of the 40 Apertif CBs to create frequency-resolved I, XX, and YY polarization empirical beam shapes. The measured CB maps can be used for the image deconvolution, primary beam correction, and mosaicking processes of Apertif imaging data. Methods. We used drift scan measurements to measure the response of each of the 40 Apertif CBs. We derived beam maps for all individual beams in I, XX, and YY polarisation in 10 or 18 frequency bins over the same bandwidth as the Apertif imaging surveys. We sampled the main lobe of the beams and the side lobes up to a radius of 0.6 degrees from the beam centres. In addition, we derived beam maps for each individual WSRT dish. Results. We present the frequency and time dependence of the beam shapes and sizes. We compared the compound beam shapes derived with the drift scan method to beam shapes derived with an independent method using a Gaussian Process Regression comparison between the Apertif continuum images and the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) catalogue. We find a good agreement between the beam shapes derived with the two independent methods. © H. The observations were performed between August 2019 and July 2020. The continuum images were produced at a central frequency 1355 MHz, with a bandwidth of ~150 MHz and angular resolution of up to 10″. In this work, we introduce and apply a new method to obtain a primary beam model based on a machine-learning approach, namely, Gaussian process regression. The primary beam models obtained with this method have been published, along with the data products for the first Apertif data release. We applied the method to the continuum images, carried out a mosaicking process on their basis, and extracted the source catalog. The catalog contains 249672 radio sources, many of which have been detected for the first time at these frequencies. We cross-matched the coordinates with the NVSS, LOFAR/DR1/value-added, and LOFAR/DR2 catalogs – resulting in 44523, 22825, and 152824 common sources, respectively. The first sample provides a unique opportunity for detecting long-term transient sources, which have significantly changed their flux density over the past 25 yr. A combination of the second and the third samples provides valuable information on the spectral properties of the sources in addition to redshift estimates. © A. M. We report the results of joint Chandra/ACIS - NuSTAR deep observations of NGC 1167, the host galaxy of the young radio jet B2 0258+35. In the ACIS data we detect X-ray emission, extended both along and orthogonal to the jet. At the end of the SE radio jet, we find lower-energy X-ray emission that coincides with a region of CO turbulence and fast outflow motions. This suggests that the hot Interstellar Medium (ISM) may be compressed by the jet and molecular outflow, resulting in more efficient cooling. Hydrodynamic simulations of jet-ISM interaction tailored to NGC 1167 are in agreement with this conclusion and with the overall morphology and spectra of the X-ray emission. The faint hard nuclear source detected with Chandra and the stringent NuSTAR upper limits on the harder X-ray emission show that the active galactic nucleus (AGN) in NGC 1167 is in a very low-accretion state. However, the characteristics of the extended X-ray emission are more consonant to those of luminous Compton Thick AGNs, suggesting that we may be observing the remnants of a past high accretion rate episode, with sustained strong activity lasting ~ 2 x 103 yr. We conclude that NGC1167 is presently a LINER, but was an AGN in the past, given the properties of the extended X-ray emission and their similarity with those of CT AGN extended emission., Comment: ApJ, in press

We report the complex radio properties of the radio galaxy NGC 2329 that resides in the centre of the galaxy cluster Abell 569. For this study, we have used archival data from the Very Large Array (VLA) at various resolutions and frequencies, as well as the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). While the wide-angle tailed (WAT) Fanaroff-Riley type I (FR I) radio morphology of the source has been discussed widely in the literature, the nature of the inner lobes has not been as widely discussed. In particular, we note that the inner lobes resemble the bubble-like radio structures observed in Seyfert galaxies. Polarization-sensitive data from the VLA clearly show magnetic field structures consistent with FR Is for the outer lobes and Seyferts for the inner lobes in NGC 2329. FR Is are classified as radio-loud (RL) active galactic nuclei (AGN) and Seyferts as radio-quiet (RQ) AGN, making this source unique. The VLBA shows a one-sided radio jet suggesting a relativistic pc-scale outflow, leading into the inner lobes. Electron lifetime estimates suggest that the outer FR I-like lobes are nearly twice as old ($\sim$45 Myr) as the inner Seyfert-like lobes ($\sim$25 Myr). Gas inflow in this merging cluster seems to have rejuvenated the AGN about $\sim$25 Myr ago, and may have caused a change in the accretion disc state. The complex composite radio morphology of NGC 2329 suggests that the RL/RQ dichotomy is a function of time in the lifecycle of an AGN., 12 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables. Apertif is a phased-array feed system for the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope, providing forty instantaneous beams over 300 MHz of bandwidth. A dedicated survey program utilizing this upgrade started on 1 July 2019, with the last observations taken on 28 February 2022. The imaging survey component provides radio continuum, polarization, and spectral line data. Aims. Public release of data is critical for maximizing the legacy of a survey. Toward that end, we describe the release of data products from the first year of survey operations, through 30 June 2020. In particular, we focus on defining quality control metrics for the processed data products. Methods. The Apertif imaging pipeline, Apercal, automatically produces non-primary beam corrected continuum images, polarization images and cubes, and uncleaned spectral line and dirty beam cubes for each beam of an Apertif imaging observation. For this release, processed data products are considered on a beam-by-beam basis within an observation. We validate the continuum images by using metrics that identify deviations from Gaussian noise in the residual images. If the continuum image passes validation, we release all processed data products for a given beam. We apply further validation to the polarization and line data products and provide flags indicating the quality of those data products. Results. We release all raw observational data from the first year of survey observations, for a total of 221 observations of 160 independent target fields, covering approximately one thousand square degrees of sky. Images and cubes are released on a per beam basis, and 3374 beams (of 7640 considered) are released. The median noise in the continuum images is 41.4 uJy beam−1, with a slightly lower median noise of 36.9 uJy beam−1 in the Stokes V polarization image. The median angular resolution is 11.6″/sin δ. The median noise for all line cubes, with a spectral resolution of 36.6 kHz, is 1.6 mJy beam−1, corresponding to a 3-σ H I column density sensitivity of 1.8 × 1020 atoms cm−2 over 20 km s−1 (for a median angular resolution of 24″ × 15″). Line cubes at lower frequency have slightly higher noise values, consistent with the global RFI environment and overall Apertif system performance. We also provide primary beam images for each individual Apertif compound beam. The data are made accessible using a Virtual Observatory interface and can be queried using a variety of standard tools. © E. A. K. We describe the APERture Tile In Focus (Apertif) system, a phased array feed (PAF) upgrade of the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope that transforms this telescope into a high-sensitivity, wide-field-of-view L-band imaging and transient survey instrument. Using novel PAF technology, up to 40 partially overlapping beams are formed on the sky simultaneously, significantly increasing the survey speed of the telescope. With this upgraded instrument, an imaging survey covering an area of 2300 deg2 is being performed that will deliver both continuum and spectral line datasets, of which the first data have been publicly released. In addition, a time domain transient and pulsar survey covering 15 000 deg2 is in progress. An overview of the Apertif science drivers, hardware, and software of the upgraded telescope is presented, along with its key performance characteristics.

The far-IR/sub-mm wavelength range contains a wealth of diagnostic information that is important for understanding the role of radio AGN in galaxy evolution. Here we present the results of Herschel PACS and SPIRE observations of a complete sample of 46 powerful 2Jy radio AGN at intermediate redshifts (0.05 < z < 0.7), which represent the deepest pointed observations of a major sample of radio AGN undertaken by Herschel. In order to assess the importance of non-thermal synchrotron emission at far-IR wavelengths, we also present new APEX sub-mm and ALMA mm data. We find that the overall incidence of non-thermal contamination in the PACS bands ($ $200$μ$m) sampled by the SPIRE instrument. Non-thermal contamination is strongest in objects with compact CSS/GPS or extended FRI radio morphologies, and in those with type 1 optical spectra. Considering thermal dust emission, we find strong correlations between the 100 and 160$μ$m monochromatic luminosities and AGN power indicators, providing further evidence that radiation from the AGN may be an important heating source for the far-IR emitting dust. Clearly, AGN contamination -- whether by the direct emission from synchrotron-emitting lobes and cores, or via radiative heating of the cool dust -- needs to be carefully considered when using the far-IR continuum to measure the star formation rates in the host galaxies of radio AGN., 22 pages, 8 figures, Accepted in MNRAS

J.; Ziemke, J., Apertif (APERture Tile In Focus) is one of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) pathfinder facilities. The Apertif project is an upgrade to the 50-year-old Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) using phased-array feed technology. The new receivers create 40 individual beams on the sky, achieving an instantaneous sky coverage of 6.5 square degrees. The primary goal of the Apertif Imaging Survey is to perform a wide survey of 3500 square degrees (AWES) and a medium deep survey of 350 square degrees (AMES) of neutral atomic hydrogen (up to a redshift of 0.26), radio continuum emission and polarisation. Each survey pointing yields 4.6 TB of correlated data. The goal of Apercal is to process this data and fully automatically generate science ready data products for the astronomical community while keeping up with the survey observations. We make use of common astronomical software packages in combination with Python based routines and parallelisation. We use an object oriented module-based approach to ensure easy adaptation of the pipeline. A Jupyter notebook based framework allows user interaction and execution of individual modules as well as a full automatic processing of a complete survey observation. If nothing interrupts processing, we are able to reduce a single pointing survey observation on our five node cluster with 24 physical cores and 256 GB of memory each within 24 h keeping up with the speed of the surveys. The quality of the generated images is sufficient for scientific usage for 44% of the recorded data products with single images reaching dynamic ranges of several thousands. Future improvements will increase this percentage to over 80%. Our design allowed development of the pipeline in parallel to the commissioning of the Apertif system. © 2021 Elsevier B.V. Background and aim Exercise-induced pulmonary hypertension (Ex-PH), due to impaired pulmonary vascular and right ventricular (RV) contractile reserve on effort, may represent the earliest sign of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), which may develop in Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) patients with poor disease control. We investigated its association with clinical determinants of immunological status, virological control, and response to antiviral therapy in HIV patients at risk for PAH. Methods In 31 consecutive HIV patients with either low (n=29) or intermediate probability (n=3) of PH at rest, we evaluated the association of isolated ExPH with: time to HIV diagnosis, CD4+ T cell count, clinical progression to AIDS, development of resistance to antiretroviral therapy (ART), HIV RNA levels (copies/mL), time to onset of ART, current use of protease inhibitors, combination of ART with boosters (ritonavir e cobicistat), virological response to ART, ART discontinuation. Isolated ExPH at stress echocardiography (ESE) was defined as absence of PH at rest and systolic pulmonary arterial pressure (sPAP) >45 mmHg or a raise of >20 mmHg during low-intensity exercise (while not exceeding a cardiac output of 10 l/min). Results 20% of the enrolled population developed ExPH. ExPH was inversely associated with CD4+ T cell count (p=0.047), time to HIV diagnosis (p=0.014) and time to onset of ART (p=0.041) compared to patients without ExPH. Patients with ExPH had greater worsening of functional class than patients without ExPH (p Conclusions Isolated ExPH associates with clinical worsening and poorer immunological control in HIV patients. The assessment of ExPH by ESE may help identify subgroups of HIV patients with a propensity to develop subclinical impairment of pulmonary circulation following poor control of HIV infection. The imposing appearance of the Basilica of St Anthony in Padua (Italy) results from several major transformations carried out after an initial construction phase between the 1230s and 1260s. Due to the lack of medieval building archives, the successive forms of the pilgrimage landmark remain uncertain. Based on a recent survey of the church and a detailed analysis of its original brickwork, this contribution provides a fresh set of evidence casting light on the early appearance of the Basilica as intended by its 13th-century builders. This paper is part of a series discussing the results obtained in the framework of a wide international collaboration - the Lockman Hole Project - aimed at improving the extensive multiband coverage available in the Lockman Hole region, through novel deep, wide-area, multifrequency (60, 150, 350 MHz, and 1.4 GHz) radio surveys. This multifrequency, multi-band information will be exploited to get a comprehensive view of star formation and active galactic nucleus activities in the high-redshift Universe from a radio perspective. In this paper, we present novel 1.4 GHz mosaic observations obtained with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. With an area coverage of 6.6 deg2, this is the largest survey reaching an rms noise of 11 uJy/beam. In this paper, we present the source catalogue (~6000 sources with flux densities S>55 uJy (5sigma), and we discuss the 1.4 GHz source counts derived from it. The modernisation of architecture in Italy during the Fascist period between 1922 and 1943 was mainly driven by its monumentalisation to scale. In this article, the ideological impact of the regime on the architectural production will be examined through the Fascist regulatory mechanisms that led to a reshaping of normative conditions of construction processes. Regulatory mechanisms, such as the 'structural monumentalisation', were applied to expand organizations through which the regime could institutionalise its power in professional networks. An ideological conformity of politics and professionals was thus not only striven for in the standardisation of construction technologies through which the regime intended to influence the building industry. Interventions, such as the establishment of new professional organisations and codes, were used to reshape Italy’s constructing conditions institutionally, that continued to influence the architectural production normatively even after the ideological change of power in 1943.

Supermassive black holes at the centres of galaxies can cycle through periods of activity and quiescence. Characterising the duty cycle of active galactic nuclei is crucial for understanding the impact of the energy they release on the host galaxy. For radio AGN, this can be done by identifying dying (remnant) and restarted radio galaxies from their radio spectral properties. Using the combination of images at 1400 MHz produced by Apertif, the new phased-array feed receiver installed on the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope, and images at 150 MHz provided by LOFAR, we have derived resolved spectral index images (at a resolution of ~15 arcsec) for all the sources within ~6 deg^2 area of the Lockman Hole region. We were able to select 15 extended radio sources with emission (partly or entirely) characterised by extremely steep spectral indices (steeper than 1.2). These objects represent radio sources in the remnant or the restarted phases of their life cycle. Our findings suggest this cycle to be relatively fast. They also show a variety of properties relevant for modelling the evolution of radio galaxies. For example, the restarted activity can occur while the remnant structure from a previous phase of activity is still visible. This provides constraints on the duration of the 'off' (dying) phase. In extended remnants with ultra-steep spectra at low frequencies, the activity likely stopped a few hundred megayears ago, and they correspond to the older tail of the age distribution of radio galaxies, in agreement with simulations of radio source evolution. We find remnant radio sources with a variety of structures (from double-lobed to amorphous), suggesting different types of progenitors. The present work sets the stage for exploiting low-frequency spectral index studies of extended sources by taking advantage of the large areas common to the LOFAR and the Apertif surveys., Accepted for publication in A&A. We report the analysis of the deep (270 ks) X-ray Chandra data of one of the most radio-loud, Seyfert 2 galaxies in the nearby Universe (z=0.01135), IC 5063. The alignment of the radio structure with the galactic disk and ionized bi-cone, enables us to study the effects of both radio jet and nuclear irradiation on the interstellar medium (ISM). The nuclear and bi-cone spectra suggest a low photoionization phase mixed with a more ionized or thermal gas component, while the cross-cone spectrum is dominated by shocked and collisionally ionized gas emission. The clumpy morphology of the soft (3 keV) and the Fe K-alpha 6.4 keV emission are both extended to kpc size along the bi-cone direction, suggesting an interaction of nuclear photons with dense clouds in the galaxy disk, as observed in other Compton Thick (CT) active nuclei. The north-west cone spectrum also exhibits an Fe XXV emission line, which appears spatially extended and spatially correlated with the most intense radio hot-spot, suggesting jet-ISM interaction., 28 pages, 10 figures and 3 tables (with 10 more figures and 3 more tables in the Appendix), submitted to ApJ on May 24, 2021

These restarted jets can interact with their environment, leaving signatures in the radio spectral energy distribution. Tracing these signatures requires resolved spectral index measurements over a broad frequency range. We present such a study for the radio galaxy 3C 293. Using the International Low Frequency Array Telescope (ILT), we probe spatial scales as fine as ∼0.2″ at 144 MHz and to constrain the spectrum, we combine these data with Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network and Very Large Array archival data at frequencies up to 8.4 GHz. In the inner lobes (∼2 kpc), we detect the presence of a compact steep spectrum (CSS) source with a spectral turnover at ∼225 MHz, caused by free-free absorption from the rich surrounding medium. We find evidence of interaction of the lobes with the rich interstellar medium of the host galaxy. The outer lobes (extending up to ∼100 kpc) have a remarkably uniform spatial distribution of spectral index and only mild spectral curvature (of ∼0.2). Overall, it appears that 3C 293 has gone through multiple (two to three) epochs of activity. This study adds 3C 293 to the new sub-group of restarted galaxies with short interruption time periods (≲1 Myr). This is the first time a spatially resolved study has been performed that simultaneously studies a young CSS source as well as the older outer lobes at such low frequencies. © 2021 The Authors. We present high angular resolution ALMA CO(2-1) and 1.7 mm continuum observations of the far-infrared-bright galaxy PKS0023-26, which hosts a young radio source and a luminous optical AGN. Although young, the powerful radio source has grown to a size of a few kpc, making it capable of affecting the ISM of the host galaxy. We detect an extended distribution of molecular gas with a mass between 0.3 and 3x10^10 Msun, depending on the CO conversion factor. The gas has a maximum extent of ~24 kpc and is distributed asymmetrically wrt the radio galaxy. Overall, the observed properties are reminiscent of molecular structures observed in some galaxy clusters. However, in the inner few kpc, the kinematics of the gas appears to be affected by the radio source. In the central regions we observe the brightest emission and the broadest profiles (FWZI ~ 500 km/s), which indicate a direct interaction of the jet with dense clouds. On larger scales, the molecular gas appears to avoid the radio lobes and gas with smaller velocity dispersion (FWZI ~350 km/s) is observed around the them. There, the gas appears to be affected by the expanding cocoon surrounding the radio source, dispersing and heating preexisting molecular clouds. The data suggest that the mode of coupling between radio jets and ISM changes from an outflowing phase in the inner regions to a maintenance phase at larger radii. This reveals that on galaxy scales the impact of the AGN is not limited to outflows. With a star-formation rate of 25 Msun/yr, PKS0023-26 is located on the SFR-M* relation for star forming galaxies. The AGN does not appear to have, at present, a major impact on the overall level of star formation of the host galaxy. Active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback operated by the expansion of radio jets can play a crucial role in driving gaseous outflows on galaxy scales. Galaxies hosting young radio AGN, whose jets are in the first phases of expansion through the surrounding interstellar medium (ISM), are the ideal targets to probe the energetic significance of this mechanism. In this paper, we characterise the warm ionised gas outflows in a sample of nine young radio sources from the 2Jy sample, combining X-shooter spectroscopy and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging data. We find that the warm outflows have similar radial extents (~0.06-2 kpc) as radio sources, consistent with the idea that `jet mode' AGN feedback is the dominant driver of the outflows detected in young radio galaxies. Exploiting the broad spectral coverage of the X-shooter data, we have used the ratios of trans-auroral emission lines of [SII] and [OII] to estimate the electron densities, finding that most of the outflows have gas densities ($\log( n_e~cm^{-3})~3-4.8 $), which we speculate could be the result of compression by jet-induced shocks. Combining our estimates of the emission-line luminosities, radii, and densities, we find that the kinetic powers of the warm outflows are a relatively small fraction of the energies available from the accretion of material onto the central supermassive black hole (SMBH), reflecting AGN feedback efficiencies below 1% in most cases. Overall, the warm outflows detected in our sample are strikingly similar to those found in nearby ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs), but more energetic and with a high feedback efficiencies on average than the general population of nearby AGN of similar bolometric luminosity; this is likely to reflect a high degree of coupling between the jets and the near-nuclear ISM in the early stages of radio source evolution., Comment: 26 pages, 7 Figures, 15 Tables (excluding Appendix), accepted for publication in A&A

BackgroundDespite microangiopathy is the hallmark of systemic sclerosis (SSc), macrovascular involvement is arousing interest. In particular, proper palmar digital arteries (PPDA) play an important role in Raynaud’s phenomenon and can contribute to the exacerbation of vascular damage. However, PPDA full characterization is still an unmet need.ObjectivesTo assess the state of PPDA in a cohort of patients with SSc using ultra-high frequency ultrasound (UHFUS), comparing the results with those obtained in healthy controls (HC) and looking for any association with SSc-specific characteristics. Correlations between UHFUS features of PPDA and microvascular bed were also investigated.MethodsConsecutive SSc patients without active digital ulcers and HC were enrolled. Epidemiological and SSc-specific data were collected. Each subject underwent UHFUS (70 MHz) evaluation of PPDA (2 per finger, from II to V finger bilaterally), searching for occluded or not viewable vessels and measuring the thickness of the three arterial layers, as well as the systo-diastolic excursion range. Finally, microvascular bed was investigated by capillaroscopy and laser speckle contrast analysis (LASCA).ResultsForty-six SSc patients (87% female, mean age 55.5 years, mean disease duration 8.2 years) and 15 HC matched for age and sex were enrolled. UHFUS in SSc revealed 123 (16.7%) PPDA occluded or not viewable, whereas in HC they were all patent. Considering the finger with at least one of the two PPDA occluded or not viewable as ultrasonographically pathological, 30 (65.2%) patients presented at least one pathological finger (Figure 1). The lack of correlations between UHFUS and capillaroscopy or LASCA reflects the existence of vasculopathic processes that are not exactly the same. Massive outflows of neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) have been observed in absorption in a number of radio galaxies and are considered a signature of AGN feedback. These outflows on kpc-scales have not been investigated in great detail as they require high-angular resolution observations to be spatially resolved. In some radio AGN, they are likely the result of the radio jets interacting with the interstellar medium. We have used a global VLBI array to map the HI outflow in a small sample of young and restarted radio galaxies which we previously observed with the VLA and the WSRT at lower resolution. Here, we report on our findings for 4C52.37 and 3C293 and we discuss the sample including the previously published sources 4C12.50 and 3C236. For 4C52.37, we present the first-ever HI VLBI observation which recovered the majority of the outflowing HI gas in form of clouds towards the central 100pc of the AGN. The clouds are blue-shifted by up to 600km/s with respect to the systemic velocity. 3C293 is largely resolved out in our VLBI observation, but we detect, towards the VLBI core, some outflowing HI gas blueshifted with respect to the systemic velocity by up to 300km/s. We also find indications that the HI outflow is extended. Overall, we find that the fraction of HI gas recovered by our VLBI observation varies significantly within our sample. In all cases we find evidence for a clumpy structure of both the outflowing and the quiescent gas, consistent with predictions from numerical simulations. The outflows include at least a component of relatively compact clouds (10^4-10^5Msun) often observed already at a few tens of pc (in projection) from the core. We also find indications that the HI outflow might have a diffuse component, especially in larger sources. We explore the low-frequency radio properties of the sources in the Fanaroff-Riley class 0 catalog (FR0CAT) as seen by the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) observations at 150 MHz. This sample includes 104 compact radio active galactic nuclei (AGN) associated with nearby (z 0.5), an indication of the presence of substantial extended emission confined within the spatial resolution limit. The fraction of FR0s showing evidence for the presence of jets, by including both spectral and morphological information, is at least ~40%. This study confirms that FR0s and FRIs can be interpreted as two extremes of a continuous population of jetted sources, with the FR0s representing the low end in size and radio power., Comment: Pre-proofs version - Accepted for publication in A&A

We present LOFAR observations at 120-168 MHz of 42 systems with possible X-ray cavities in their hot atmosphere, of which 17 are groups or ellipticals, 19 are nearby clusters (z0.3). The X-ray cavities, formed by the radio lobes of the central active galactic nucleus (AGN), are evidence of radio-mode AGN feedback. In the groups and ellipticals sample, more than half of the systems have X-ray cavities for which no associated lobe emission was detected. Conversely, we report the discovery of large radio lobes in NGC 6338, extending far beyond the emission reported previously in the literature. In the case of the nearby clusters, our observations show that there is little low-frequency radio emission that extends beyond the cavities (e.g., MS 0735.6+7421 and A2052). For the first time, we report secure cavity-radio associations in 2A 0335+096, ZwCl 2701, and ZwCl 8276 that strengthens their interpretation as AGN-created cavities. However, in some known cavity systems (e.g., A1795 and ZwCl 3146) we report the lack of detectable low-frequency radio emission associated with the cavities. Our sample of higher-redshift systems is small, and unfortunately the present LOFAR observations are not able to resolve the lobes in many of them. Giant radio galaxies (GRGs) are physically large radio sources that extend well beyond their host galaxy environment. Their polarization properties are affected by the poorly constrained magnetic field that permeates the intergalactic medium on Mpc scales. In the past decade, high-sensitivity radio surveys have revealed that the local radio active galactic nucleus population is dominated by moderate-to-low power sources with emission that is compact on galaxy scales. High-excitation radio galaxies (HERGs) with intermediate radio powers (22.5 < log (L1.4 GHz) < 25.0 W Hz−1) form an important sub-group of this population, since there is strong evidence that they also drive multiphase outflows on the scales of galaxy bulges. Here, we present high-resolution Very Large Array observations at 1.5, 4.5, and 7.5 GHz of a sample of 16 such HERGs in the local universe (z < 0.1), conducted in order to investigate the morphology, extent, and spectra of their radio emission in detail, down to sub-kpc scales. We find that the majority (56 per cent) have unresolved structures at the limiting angular resolution of the observations (∼0.3 arcsec). Although similar in the compactness of their radio structures, these sources have steep radio spectra and host galaxy properties that distinguish them from local low-excitation radio galaxies that are unresolved on similar scales. The remaining sources exhibit extended radio structures with projected diameters ∼1.4–19.0 kpc and a variety of morphologies: three double-lobed; two large-scale diffuse; one jetted and ‘S-shaped’; one undetermined. Only 19 per cent of the sample therefore exhibit the double-lobed/edge-brightened structures often associated with their counterparts at high and low radio powers: radio-powerful HERGs and Seyfert galaxies, respectively. Additional high-resolution observations are required to investigate this further, and to probe the ≲300 pc scales on which some Seyfert galaxies show extended structures.

We present LOFAR observations at 150 MHz of the borderline FRI/FRII giant radio galaxy NGC 6251. This paper presents the most sensitive and highest-resolution images of NGC 6251 at these frequencies to date, revealing for the first time a low-surface-brightness extension to the northern lobe, and a possible backflow associated with the southern lobe. The integrated spectra of components of NGC 6251 are consistent with previous measurements at higher frequencies, similar to results from other LOFAR studies of nearby radio galaxies. We find the outer structures of NGC 6251 to be either at equipartition or slightly electron dominated, similar to those of FRII sources rather than FRIs; but this conclusion remains tentative because of uncertainties associated with the geometry and the extrapolation of X-ray measurements to determine the external pressure distribution on the scale of the outer lobes. We place lower limits on the ages of the extension of the northern lobe and the backflow of the southern lobe of $t \gtrsim 250$ Myr and $t \gtrsim 210$ Myr respectively. We present the first detection of polarisation at 150 MHz in NGC 6251. Taking advantage of the high Faraday resolution of LOFAR, we place an upper limit on the magnetic field in the group of $B < 0.2 (\Lambda_B / 10 {\rm kpc})^{-0.5} \mu$G for a coherence scale of $\Lambda_B < 60 {\rm kpc}$ and $B < 13 \mu$G for $\Lambda_B = 240$ kpc., Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures; accepted by MNRAS

Repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs) present excellent opportunities to identify FRB progenitors and host environments, as well as decipher the underlying emission mechanism. Detailed studies of repeating FRBs might also hold clues to the origin of FRBs as a population. We aim to detect the first two repeating FRBs: FRB 121102 (R1) and FRB 180814.J0422+73 (R2), and characterise their repeat statistics. We also want to significantly improve the sky localisation of R2. We use the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope to conduct extensive follow-up of these two repeating FRBs. The new phased-array feed system, Apertif, allows covering the entire sky position uncertainty of R2 with fine spatial resolution in one pointing. We characterise the energy distribution and the clustering of detected R1 bursts. We detected 30 bursts from R1. Our measurements indicate a dispersion measure of 563.5(2) pc cm$^{-3}$, suggesting a significant increase in DM over the past few years. We place an upper limit of 8% on the linear polarisation fraction of the brightest burst. We did not detect any bursts from R2. A single power-law might not fit the R1 burst energy distribution across the full energy range or widely separated detections. Our observations provide improved constraints on the clustering of R1 bursts. Our stringent upper limits on the linear polarisation fraction imply a significant depolarisation, either intrinsic to the emission mechanism or caused by the intervening medium, at 1400 MHz that is not observed at higher frequencies. The non-detection of any bursts from R2 implies either a highly clustered nature of the bursts, a steep spectral index, or a combination of both. Giant radio galaxies (GRGs) are a subclass of radio galaxies, which have grown to megaparsec scales. GRGs are much rarer than normal-sized radio galaxies (< 0.7 Mpc) and the reason for their gigantic sizes is still debated. Here, we report on the biggest sample of GRGs identified to date. These objects were found in the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey first data release images, which cover a 424 deg2 region. Of the 239 GRGs found, 225 are new discoveries. The GRGs in our sample have sizes ranging from 0.7 Mpc to 3.5 Mpc and have redshifts (z) between 0.1 and 2.3. Seven GRGs have sizes above 2 Mpc and one has a size of ∼3.5 Mpc. The sample contains 40 GRGs hosted by spectroscopically confirmed quasars. Here, we present the search techniques employed and the resulting catalogue of the newly discovered large sample of GRGs along with their radio properties. In this paper, we also show for the first time that the spectral index of GRGs is similar to that of normal-sized radio galaxies, indicating that most of the GRG population is not dead or is not similar to a remnant-type radio galaxy. We find that 20 out of 239 GRGs in our sample are located at the centres of clusters and we present our analysis on their cluster environment and radio morphology.

We present new radio and optical images of the nearest radio galaxy Centaurus A and its host galaxy NGC 5128. We focus our investigation on the northern transition region, where energy is transported from the ~5 kpc (~5 arcmin) scales of the Northern Inner Lobe (NIL) to the ~30 kpc (~30 arcmin) scales of the Northern Middle Lobe (NML). Our Murchison Widefield Array observations at 154 MHz and our Parkes radio telescope observations at 2.3 GHz show diffuse radio emission connecting the NIL to the NML, in agreement with previous Australia Telescope Compact Array observations at 1.4 GHz. Comparison of these radio data with our widefield optical emission line images show the relationship between the NML radio emission and the ionised filaments that extend north from the NIL, and reveal a new ionised filament to the east, possibly associated with a galactic wind. Our deep optical images show clear evidence for a bipolar outflow from the central galaxy extending to intermediate scales, despite the non-detection of a southern radio counterpart to the NML. Thus, our observational overview of Centaurus A reveals a number of features proposed to be associated with AGN feedback mechanisms, often cited as likely to have significant effects in galaxy evolution models. Feedback by radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) in galaxy groups is not fully understood. Open questions include the duty cycle of the AGN, the spatial extent of the radio lobes, the effect they have on the intragroup medium, and the fate of the cosmic rays. We present the discovery of a 650 kpc-radio galaxy embedded in steep diffuse emission at $z = 0.18793 \pm 5 \times 10^{-5}$ located at the center of the galaxy group MaxBCG J199.31832+51.72503 using an observation from the LOFAR Two-meter Sky Survey (LoTSS) at the central frequency of 144 MHz. Subsequently, we performed a GMRT observation at the central frequency of 607 MHz to study the spectral properties of the source. The observations reveal a radio galaxy with a total radio power $P_{\rm tot, 1.4} \sim 2.1 \times 10^{24}$ W Hz$^{-1}$, exhibiting two asymmetrical jets and lobes. The derived spectral index map shows a steepening toward the inner regions and a steep-spectrum core region. We model the integrated radio spectrum, providing two possible interpretations: the radio source is evolved but still active or it is just at the end of its active phase. Finally, in the same field of view we have discovered Mpc-sized emission surrounding a close pair of AGN located at a redshift $z = 0.0587 \pm 2 \times 10^{-4}$ (SDSS J131544.56+521213.2 and SDSS J131543.99+521055.7) which could be a radio remnant source., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures
