Introduction For patients on renal replacement therapy (RRT), "travel" and "independence" are rated as 2 of the top 5 factors that inform their choice of treatment modality. While home dialysis modalities offer patients a high degree of independence, the most common RRT in the United States is in-center hemodialysis (IHD). The limits imposed by IHD treatment can present a variety of challenges for patients who wish to travel. This study explored how IHD patients managed their travel and the role of dialysis social workers in executing travel arrangements for patients. Methods We performed a qualitative descriptive investigation using semi-structured interviews with adults receiving IHD (n = 16) and renal social workers (n = 8) from Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Data were analyzed using a constant comparative method. Findings Three themes emerged from the interviews: travel process, travel-related barriers, and travel-related facilitators. The travel process entailed transient dialysis unit challenges and the need for multiple preparations and precautions. Barriers included comorbidities and not having a relationship with transient dialysis unit staff. Facilitators focused on the importance of travel and staff professionalism at transient dialysis units. Overall, there was lack of uniform protocols to guide the travel process at the patient and the dialysis unit levels. Discussion This study identified multiple perspectives regarding travel arrangements in chronic IHD patients. There is limited research on travel issues for IHD patients and this investigation is among the first to articulate barriers and facilitators associated with travel from the perspective of patients and social workers. Supporting travel for IHD patients can increase their sense of autonomy and provide opportunities to improve their quality of life.

Introduction: Depression and anxiety are common affective experiences during the first year following a solid organ transplant. This study examined the degree to which an evidenced-based clinical intervention implemented by social workers—Symptom Targeted Intervention—can alter self-reported depression and anxiety in heart, kidney, liver, and lung transplant recipients. Research Questions: This investigation explored 2 questions: (1) Can symptom-targeted interventions significantly reduce posttransplant recipients’ self-reported depression and anxiety at the conclusion of treatment and at 1-month follow-up? and (2) Does the response differ by gender? Design: A 1-group pretest–posttest design with a 1-month follow-up was used to test for changes in anxiety and depression after transplantation. Forty-eight patients at 2 US transplant centers were enrolled between January 2016 and May 2017. Data were collected using an online platform and analyzed to assess for differences over time and by gender. Results: Anxiety decreased significantly between pretest and posttest using the General Anxiety Disorder-2 ( P < .05). Comparisons by gender indicated that women had a significant decrease in anxiety between pretest and posttest ( P < .001); however, there was no significant decrease in anxiety for men. Analyses by gender and time yielded no significant differences for depression. Discussion: Symptom-targeted interventions have the potential to reduce anxiety in solid organ transplant patients and enhance their psychosocial adjustment after surgery.

Fatalism is reported as a salient cultural belief that influences cancer screening disparities in racial and ethnic minority groups. Previous studies provide a range of measures and descriptions of cancer fatalism, but no studies to our knowledge have analyzed how fatalistic views cluster together within subgroups to form distinct profiles, and how these profiles can be predicted. This study identified subgroups of Korean American immigrants with similar fatalistic beliefs toward cancer and examined the influence of fatalism, health belief variables, and health literacy on mammography use. A cross-sectional survey design was used to obtain a convenience sample of 240 Korean American immigrant women in Los Angeles, California. Latent class analysis was used to identify unobserved subgroups of fatalism. Hierarchical logistic regression models were used to identify predisposing, enabling, and need factors associated with recent mammography use. The latent class analysis model identified three cancer fatalism subgroups: high fatalism (17.8%), moderate fatalism (36.7%), and low fatalism (45.5%). Women in the high fatalism subgroup were more likely to have had a mammogram within the past 2 years than women in the low fatalism subgroup. Regression analysis revealed three facilitators of recent mammogram use: level of fatalism, perceived barriers to mammogram, and family history of cancer. Although cultural beliefs can have a powerful influence on health-seeking behavior, it is important to weigh individual and contextual factors that may weaken or mediate the relationship between fatalism and engaging in preventive care such as having a mammogram.

Background A growing number of health systems in the United States have integrated behavioral health team members to expand their capabilities and clinical effectiveness. Purpose To explore perceptions of interprofessional collaboration with integrated behavioral health providers among family medicine residents (FMR), family medicine faculty, and pharmacists (faculty/residents). Method An exploratory descriptive study was conducted in which five, 60-min focus groups were used to articulate perceptions of professional roles and team-based care in an interprofessional family medicine community-based clinical practice. Results Three key themes emerged: (1) interprofessional team-based practice: the influence of communication, collaboration, and colocation; (2) care delivery system processes: success and breakdown; and (3) commitment to holistic care practices. These findings suggest how FMR education can be improved to prepare learners for patient-centered, team-based collaborative practice with integrated behavioral health providers. Conclusion Integrating behavioral health in a family medicine clinical learning environment empowers physicians to better problem solve and provide enhanced patient care.

Objectives: In this study, we assessed breast cancer screening in Korean American immigrant women and identified factors associated with adherence to American Cancer Society mammography screening guidelines. Methods: We carried out a cross-sectional survey with 182 Korean American immigrant women in Los Angeles County, California. Andersen's Behavioral Model of Health Services Use guided this study's design and analysis. We used hierarchical logistic regression to identify predisposing, enabling, and need factors associated with mammography adherence. Results: Nearly all respondents (95.1%) had a mammogram at some point in their lifetime. Mammography adherence based on age was 22.2% (45-49 years), 29.0% (50-54 years), and 67.7% (55 years and older). The strongest correlates of mammogram adherence were having a regular primary care check-up and hearing about a mammogram experience from family members, friends, or neighbors. Awareness of free or low-cost mammogram service, family cancer history, and having fatalistic beliefs also were associated with mammogram adherence. Conclusions: The findings highlight the primacy of health education messages that emphasize the importance of regular check-ups and personal screening experiences to promote mammography use in this population. Additional research is needed to understand Korean American immigrant women's perspectives on breast cancer and breast cancer screening in relation to fatalism.

Discussion In accordance with the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH Act), nursing professional can play an important role by responding to older adults’ diverse technology preferences and effectively incorporating them into nursing practice.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Given that cardiovascular rehabilitation (CR) participation is the best secondary prevention of cardiac mortality, it is important to understand the challenges and motivations people experience while taking part in rehabilitation. The present qualitative study explored the treatment experiences of 20 women and 20 men at urban and rural rehabilitation clinics in Minnesota. Participants were equally divided based on the number of CR session completed (less than or equal to 18 vs. more than 18). The study’s primary aim was to articulate similarities and differences in the CR treatment experiences by gender. Data were gathered from individual interviews and analyzed using an inductive content analysis. Findings revealed that both women and men view CR as a means to move forward from their cardiac incident and achieve good health. Women were more likely than were men to be motivated by a perceived obligation to CR staff and improved quality of life. Men, in comparison, identified their commitment to CR as a need to complete a task. The study findings can help inform the design of rehabilitation programs and strengthen patient-centered interventions to enhance participation in treatment.

Background Our nephrology fellowship requires specific training in recognition and referral of end-stage renal disease patients likely to benefit from palliative and hospice care. Methods To identify end-of-life (EOL) referral barriers that require greater training emphasis, we performed a cross-sectional, 17-item anonymous online survey (August–October 2015) of 93 nephrologists associated with the program since 1987. Results There was a 61% response rate (57/93 surveys). Ninety-five percent practiced clinical nephrology (54/57). Of these, 51 completed the survey (55% completion rate), and their responses were analyzed. Sixty-four percent were in practice >10 years; 65% resided in the Southern USA. Ninety-two percent felt comfortable discussing EOL care, with no significant difference between those with ≤10 versus >10 years of practice experience (P = 0.28). Thirty-one percent reported referring patients to EOL care ‘somewhat’ or ‘much less often’ than indicated. PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES To examine the association between routine physical activity and self-rated health status in older adults with cancer.. DESIGN Cross-sectional. SETTING Community-dwelling older adult survivors who completed a screening tool and subsequent detailed interview from the 2004 wave of the National Long-Term Care Survey, a nationally representative study of Medicare beneficiaries aged 65 years or older. SAMPLE 251 older adult cancer survivors who regularly engaged in routine physical activity. METHODS Participants were asked about chronic health conditions, depression, activities of daily living, participation in physical activities, self-rated health status, and sociodemographic characteristics. A weighted ordered probit model was used to estimate variables that predict self-reported health status. MAIN RESEARCH VARIABLES Self-rated health status and participation in physical activity. FINDINGS Age and higher education level were found to be significant correlates of health status (p < 0.05) in the first model. Although education was not significant in subsequent models, age, functional disability, and depression all were identified as significant correlates of health status (p < 0.01). In the final model, in which moderate and vigorous activity participation were entered, older adult survivors who engaged in vigorous physical activity showed higher levels of health status than those who engaged in light physical activity (p < 0.05), but number of chronic health conditions was not significantly associated with health status. CONCLUSIONS The association between vigorous activity and health status points to the primacy of physical activity within a post-cancer treatment health regimen. . IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING Health programs and policies need to address physical activity to improve the overall well-being of older adult cancer survivors.

This study was designed to assess dialysis subjects’ perceived autonomy support association with phosphate binder medication adherence, race and gender. A multi-site cross-sectional study was conducted among 377 dialysis subjects. The Health Care Climate (HCC) Questionnaire assessed subjects’ perception of their providers’ autonomy support for phosphate binder use, and adherence was assessed by the self-reported Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS). Serum phosphorus was obtained from the medical record. Regression models were used to examine independent factors of medication adherence, serum phosphorus, and differences by race and gender. Non-white HCC scores were consistently lower compared with white subjects’ scores. No differences were observed by gender. Reported phosphate binder adherence was associated with HCC score, and also with phosphorus control. No significant association was found between HCC score and serum phosphorus. Autonomy support, especially in non-white end stage renal disease subjects, may be an appropriate target for culturally informed strategies to optimize mineral bone health.

There is variable emphasis on dialysis-specific training among US nephrology fellowship programs. Our study objective was to determine the association between nephrology training experience and subsequent clinical practice. We conducted a national survey of clinical nephrologists using a fax-back survey distributed between March 8, 2010 and April 30, 2010 (N = 629). The survey assessed the time distribution of clinical practice, self-assessment of preparedness to provide care for dialysis patients at the time of certification examination, distribution of dialysis modality among patients, and nephrologists' choice of dialysis modality for themselves if their kidneys failed. While respondents spent 28% of their time caring for dialysis patients, 38% recalled not feeling very well prepared to care for dialysis patients when taking the nephrology certification examination. Sixteen percent obtained additional dialysis training after fellowship completion. Only 8% of US dialysis patients use home dialysis; physicians very well prepared to care for dialysis patients at the time of certification or who obtained additional dialysis training were significantly more likely to provide care to home peritoneal dialysis patients. Even though 92% of US dialysis patients receive thrice weekly in-center hemodialysis, only 6% of nephrologists selected this for themselves; selection of therapy for self was associated with dialysis modalities used by their patients. Nephrology training programs need to ensure that all trainees are very well prepared to care for dialysis patients, as this is central to nephrology practice. Utilization of dialysis therapies other than standard hemodialysis is dependent, in part, on training experience.

Hemodialysis patients use a variety of oral medications on a daily basis to control their kidney disease and comorbid illnesses. Under the new paradigm of kidney disease care for dialysis units outlined in the 2008 US Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Conditions for Coverage, there has been a formal shift in the role of the hemodialysis patient from a passive participant in care planning to a fully collaborative member of the interdisciplinary team. In the chronic disease care field, the focus from patient compliance or patient adherence to patient self-management complements this paradigm shift in dialysis care. In this narrative review, we discuss key barriers to adult hemodialysis patient self-management of oral medications that include pill burden, demographic and socioeconomic variables, psychosocial factors, health literacy, patient satisfaction, and health beliefs. We further examine these barriers in the context of the 2008 Medicare Conditions for Coverage. To promote hemodialysis patients' self-management of oral medication regimens, additional research and behavioral interventions are needed to help hemodialysis patients overcome obstacles that impede their ability to effectively manage chronic illness and improve health outcomes.

Aims To compare the lifetime prevalence of mood disorders among those with and without type 1 diabetes. Methods Data from a nationally representative sample were obtained. Individuals were classified as having type 1 diabetes if a health professional diagnosed them with diabetes before age 30 and they began insulin within 1 month of their diagnosis ( N =314). Results The prevalence of mood disorders in persons with type 1 diabetes was 7.9% (95% CI 3.1–12.7) compared to 5.6% (95% CI 5.4–5.8) for those without type 1 diabetes (age- and sex-adjusted OR=1.56, 95% CI 1.04–2.34). Conclusions Future research would benefit from the use of community-based representative samples.

This article describes the association between substance use, sexual identity, and seeing a health care provider on a regular basis for 257 men who have sex with men (MSM). Data from in-person interviews were gathered from MSM who resided in Massachusetts between 2003 and 2007. A logistic regression analysis that controlled for demographic characteristics, health insurance status, HIV/AIDS status, drug use, and social support revealed that MSM who identified as heterosexual, compared with those who identified as gay or bisexual, were 60% less likely to access a health care provider on a regular basis. Further, the likelihood of seeing a provider regularly was 54% lower for MSM who had used illegal drugs in the past 30 days and 32% higher for MSM who had more social support. Study limitations and implications are discussed.

A rich harvest of RR Lyrae stars has been identified for the first time in B514, a metal-poor ([Fe/H] = 1.95 +/- 0.10 dex) globular cluster of the Andromeda galaxy (M31), based on Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 and Advanced Camera for Surveys time-series observations. We have detected and derived periods for 89 RR Lyrae stars (82 fundamental-mode -RRab- and 7 first-overtone -RRc- pulsators, respectively) among 161 candidate variables identified in the cluster. The average period of the RR Lyrae variables ( = 0.58 days and = 0.35 days, for RRab and RRc pulsators, respectively) and the position in the period-amplitude diagram both suggest that B514 is likely an Oosterhoff type I cluster. This appears to be in disagreement with the general behaviour of the metal-poor globular clusters in the Milky Way, which show instead Oosterhoff type II pulsation properties. The average apparent magnitude of the RR Lyrae stars sets the mean level of the cluster horizontal branch at = 25.18 +/- 0.02 (sigma=0.16 mag, on 81 stars). By adopting a reddening E(B-V) = 0.07 +/- 0.02 mag, the above metallicity and M_V=0.44 +/- 0.05 mag for the RR Lyrae variables of this metallicity, we derive a distance modulus of mu_0=24.52 +/- 0.08 mag, corresponding to a distance of about 800 +/- 30 kpc, based on a value of M_V that sets mu_0(LMC)=18.52., Comment: ApJ Letters, in press

Intercountry adoption offers both benefits and challenges for people wishing to become adoptive parents. Survey data from 326 U.S. families with intercountry adoptees were gathered to assess parental preparation for the adoption process, satisfaction with their adoption services, and participation in activities that correspond to the adopted child's birth culture. Findings indicated that preparation was positively associated with satisfaction and negatively associated with medical, psychological, and developmental challenges. In addition, family involvement in cultural activities was positively associated with preparation and negatively associated with medical, psychological, and developmental challenges. Implications are discussed for social workers and other professionals involved in adoption-related activities.

We derive the mass-metallicity relation of star-forming galaxies up to $z\sim0.9$, using data from the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey. Automatic measurement of emission-line fluxes and equivalent widths have been performed on the full spectroscopic sample. Purpose: Studies of subjective well-being and health status have given limited attention to the role of social comparisons. Based on theories of social cognition and cognitive appraisal, this paper examines the mediating role of social comparisons and subjective well-being in health status across time. Design and Methods: Data from 2,558 Medicare enrollees is used to test the hypothesized model; this is a secondary analysis of data. Structural equation modeling, with EQS, is used for analyses. Results: Social comparison has a significant influence on subjective well-being. With 2-year follow-up data, the model predicted almost 20% of the variance in physical and mental health outcomes. The influence of current physical health status on physical and mental health outcomes differs for men and women. Implications: Study findings suggest that social comparison is a key factor in enhancing subjective well-being, which influences longevity and reduces depressive symptoms in older adults.

International audience; Aims:By combining data from the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey (VVDS) with the Spitzer Wide-area InfraRed Extragalactic survey (SWIRE), we have built the currently largest spectroscopic sample of high redshift galaxies selected in the rest-frame near-infrared. We have obtained 2040 spectroscopic redshifts of galaxies with (m3.6)_AB < 21.5 at 3.6 mu m, and 1255 spectroscopic redshifts of galaxies with (m4.5)_AB < 21. These allow us to investigate the clustering evolution of galaxies selected via their rest-frame near-infrared luminosity in the redshift range 0.2 < z < 2.1. Methods: We use the projected two-point correlation function w_p(r_p) to study the three dimensional clustering properties of galaxies detected at 3.6 mu m and 4.5 mu m with the InfraRed Array Camera (IRAC) in the SWIRE survey with measured spectroscopic redshifts from the first epoch VVDS. We compare these properties to those of a larger sample of 16672 SWIRE galaxies for which we have accurate photometric redshifts in the same field. Results: We find that in the 3.6 mu m and 4.5 mu m flux limited samples, the apparent correlation length does not change from redshift ~2 to the present. The measured correlation lengths have a mean value of r0 ~= 3.9±0.5 h-1 Mpc for the galaxies selected at 3.6 mu m and a mean value of r0 ~= 4.4±0.5 h-1 Mpc for the galaxies selected at 4.5 mu m, across the whole redshift range explored. These values are larger than those typicaly found for I-band selected galaxies at I_AB < 24, for which r0 varies from 2.69 h-1 Mpc to 3.63 h-1 Mpc between z = 0.5 to z = 2.1. We find that the difference in correlation length between I-band and 3.6-4.5 mum selected samples decreases with increasing redshift, becoming comparable at z ~= 1.5. We interpret this as evidence that galaxies with older stellar populations and galaxies actively forming stars reside in comparably over-dense environments at epochs earlier than z ~= 1.5, supporting the recently reported flattening of the color-density relation at high redshift. The increasing difference in correlation length with cosmic time observed between rest-frame UV-optical and near-infrared selected samples could then be an indication that star formation is gradually shifting to lower density regions with decreasing redshift, while the older, passively evolving galaxies remain in the most over-dense peaks.

Hyperphosphatemia is common in end-stage renal disease and associates with mortality. Phosphate binders reduce serum phosphorus levels; however, adherence is often poor. This pilot study aims to assess patients' self-motivation to adhere to phosphate binders, its association with phosphorus control, and potential differences by race.Cross sectional design. Subjects were enrolled from one academic medical center dialysis practice from July to November 2012. Self-motivation to adhere to phosphate binders was assessed with the autonomous regulation (AR) scale (range: 1-7) and self-reported medication adherence with the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale. Linear regression models adjusting for age, sex, health literacy, and medication adherence were applied to determine associations with serum phosphorus level, including any evidence of interaction by race.Among 100 participants, mean age was 51 years (±15 years), 53% were male, 72% were non-white, 89% received hemodialysis, and mean serum phosphorus level was 5.7 ± 1.6 mg/dL. More than half (57%) reported the maximum AR score (7). Higher AR scores were noted in those reporting better health overall (P = .001) and those with higher health literacy (P = .01). AR score correlated with better medication adherence (r = 0.22; P = .02), and medication adherence was negatively associated with serum phosphorus (r = -0.40; P.001). In subgroup analysis among non-whites, higher AR scores correlated with lower serum phosphorus (high vs lower AR score: 5.55 [1.5] vs 6.96 [2.2]; P = .01). Associations between AR score (β 95% confidence interval: -0.37 [-0.73 to -0.01]; P = .04), medication adherence (β 95% confidence interval: -0.25 [-0.42 to -0.07]; P = .01), and serum phosphorus persisted in adjusted analyses.Self-motivation was associated with phosphate binder adherence and phosphorus control, and this differed by race. Additional research is needed to determine if personalized, culturally sensitive strategies to understand and overcome motivational barriers may optimize mineral bone health in end-stage renal disease.

Little is known about the cultural beliefs and quality of life (QOL) of US-born and foreign-born Chinese women with breast cancer. We conducted individual semistructured qualitative interviews to explore the meaning of QOL, identify beliefs about cancer, and make comparison between US-born and foreign-born survivors. Women in this study identified the stigma of breast cancer that exists in the Asian community. They also described interpersonal support as central to a good QOL. However, when describing QOL, foreign-born Chinese women referred to wealth more frequently, while US-born Chinese women indicated friendship more frequently. The study findings support the need for culturally appropriate interventions that take into consideration the cancer-related beliefs and QOL of breast cancer survivors in the Chinese community.

VIMOS (Visible Multi-Object Spectrograph) is a multiobject imaging spectrograph installed at the VLT (Very large Telescope) at the ESO (European Southern Observatory) Paranal Observatory that is especially suited for survey work. VIMOS is characterized by its very high multiplexing factor: it is possible to take up to 800 spectra with 10" long slits in a single exposure. To fully exploit its multiplexing potential, we designed and implemented a dedicated software tool: the VIMOS Mask Preparation Software (VMMPS), which allows the astronomer to select the objects to be spectroscopically observed, and provides for automatic slit positioning and slit number maximization within the instrumental constraints. The output of VMMPS is used to manufacture the slit masks to be mounted in the instrument for spectroscopic observations.

This paper presents the ``First Epoch'' sample from the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey (VVDS). The VVDS goals, observations, data reduction with VIPGI, and redshift measurement with KBRED are discussed. Data have been obtained with the VIsible Multi Object Spectrograph (VIMOS) on the ESO-VLT UT3, allowing to observe ~600 slits simultaneously at R~230. A total of 11564 objects have been observed in the VVDS-02h and VVDS-CDFS Deep fields over a total area of 0.61deg^2, selected solely on the basis of apparent magnitude 17.5 1.4. The survey reaches a redshift measurement completeness of 78% overall (93% including less reliable objects), with a spatial sampling of the population of galaxies of 25% and ~30% in the VVDS-02h and VVDS-CDFS. The redshift accuracy measured from repeated observations with VIMOS and comparison to other surveys is ~276km/s. From this sample we present for the first time the redshift distribution of a magnitude limited spectroscopic sample down to IAB=24. The redshift distribution has a median of z=0.62, z=0.65, z=0.70, and z=0.76, for magnitude limited samples with IAB 23.5, probing the bright star forming population of galaxies. This sample provides an unprecedented dataset to study galaxy evolution over 90% of the life of the universe

What characterizes expertise in mental health social work? This article attempts to answer this question by reporting on the findings of a cross-national Australian and American study of social work practice expertise in mental health settings, particularly in working with people with long-term serious mental illness. The study identified expert practitioners through a peer-nomination process and asked each of them to describe a memorable practice situation in focus groups. These group interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using a constant comparative method. In the face of often complex and demanding work situations, these social workers demonstrated qualities specific to mental health social work that were designated as belief, optimism and caring. These three qualities are delineated and discussed in this article, as well as the implications for social work practice and education

{This paper presents the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey around the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS). We have measured 1599 new redshifts with VIMOS on the European Observatory Very Large Telescope - UT3, in an area 21x21.6 arcmin^2, including 784 redshifts in the Hubble Space Telescope - Advanced Camera for Surveys GOODS area. 30% of all objects with I_AB=24 have been observed independently of magnitude, indicating that the sample is purely magnitude limited. We have reached an unprecedented completeness level of 88% in terms of the ratio of secure measurements vs. observed objects, while 95% of all objects have a redshift measurement. A total of 1452 galaxies, 139 stars, 8 QSOs have a redshift identification, 141 of these being unsecure measurements. The redshift distribution down to I_AB=24 is peaked at a median redshift z=0.73, with a significant high redshift tail extending up to ~4. Several high density peaks in the distribution of galaxies are identified. In particular, the strong peak at z=0.735 contains more than 130 galaxies in a velocity range +/-2000 km/s distributed all across the transverse ~20 h^-1 Mpc of the survey. This paper presents a detailed comparison between high-redshift observations from the VIMOS-VLT Deep Survey (VVDS) and predictions from the Munich semi-analytical model of galaxy formation. In particular, we focus this analysis on the magnitude, redshift, and colour distributions of galaxies, as well as their clustering properties. We constructed 100 quasi-independent mock catalogues, using the output of the semi-analytical model presented in De Lucia & Blaizot (2007).We then applied the same observational selection function of the VVDS-Deep survey, so as to carry out a fair comparison between models and observations. We find that the semi-analytical model reproduces well the magnitude counts in the optical bands. It tends, however, to overpredict the abundance of faint red galaxies, in particular in the i' and z' bands. Model galaxies exhibit a colour bimodality that is only in qualitative agreement with the data. In particular, we find that the model tends to overpredict the number of red galaxies at low redshift and of blue galaxies at all redshifts probed by VVDS-Deep observations, although a large fraction of the bluest observed galaxies is absent from the model. This qualitative study examined several ecological aspects of medical social work practice that affect social workers' emotional well-being. Forty-seven medical social workers from seven hospitals participated in small group interviews in which practice experiences were explored. A grounded theory approach was used to analyze the data, with emotional dissonance emerging as a central theme. Community, family, and individual factors contributing to emotional dissonance are presented, and the effect of social support is examined. Implications for social work practice are discussed.

Time series of B,V,I CCD photometry and radial velocity measurements from high resolution spectroscopy (R=30,000) covering the full pulsation cycle are presented for the field RR Lyrae star CM Leonis. The photometric data span a 6 year interval from 1994 to 1999, and allow us to firmly establish the pulsation mode and periodicity of the variable. The derived period P=0.361699 days (±0.000001) is very close to the value published in the Fourth Edition of the General Catalogue of Variable Stars (P=0.361732 days). However, contrary to what was previously found, the amplitude and shape of the light curve qualify CM Leo as a very regular first overtone pulsator with a prominent hump on the rising branch of its multicolour light curves. According to an abundace analysis performed on three spectra taken near minimum light (0.42 < � < 0.61), CM Leo is a metal-poor star with metal abundance [Fe/H]= 1.93±0.20. The photometric and radial velocity curves of CM Leo have been compared with the predictions of suitable pulsational models to infer tight constraints on the stellar mass, effective temperature, and distance modulus of the star. We derive a true distance modulus of CM Leo of µ0=13.11 ±0.02 mag and a corresponding absolute magnitude of MV =0.47±0.04. This absolute magnitude, once corrected for evolutionary and metallicity effects, leads to a true distance modulus of the Large Magellanic Cloud of µ0=18.43± 0.06 mag, in better agreement with the long astronomical distance scale.

This study explored the extent to which college men and women of various racial and ethnic groups differ in their health beliefs and behaviors. Exploratory factor analyses of survey responses from a diverse sample of 1816 undergraduate students identified 21 items in six cohesive domains: Diet; Anger and Stress; Preventive Care; Medical Compliance; Substance Use; and Beliefs about Masculinity. Analyses of variance explored group differences across these domains. Findings revealed consistent gender differences, with men engaging in riskier behaviors and holding riskier beliefs than women. Main effects for ethnicity were also observed, but only for the diet domain was a gender by ethnicity interaction found. Implications for establishing gender- and ethnicity-based health promotion and disease prevention interventions are discussed.

This article examines how young gay men disclose their sexual identity to family members and how their family members respond to this disclosure. Qualitative data were collected from a nonrandom sample of 57 African-, European-, Mexican-, and Vietnamese-American gay males, ages 18 to 24. Findings revealed similarities across racial and ethnic groups in how these young gay men came out to family members and the responses they received after their initial self-disclosure. Implications for practice are discussed.

Using the first-epoch data from the VIMOS-VLT Deep Survey (VVDS), we investigate the evolution of the projected two-point correlation function of galaxies between z ∼ 1 and the present epoch. For the global galaxy population we do not find strong variations of clustering with redshift. However, dependence of clustering on intrinsic luminosities and stellar masses of galaxies evolves significantly during this period. We observe more close pairs for the most luminous and (less distinctly) most massive objects at z ∼ 1 as compared to what is seen locally, resulting in a non–power-law shape of their correlation function, with an upturn on small scales. This effect can be modeled within the framework of the halo occupation distribution models and leads to the conclusion that at z ∼ 1 we are possibly observing a population of luminous and not very massive satellite galaxies that occupy the most massive dark-matter halos—an effect that is not seen locally.

The VIMOS VLT Deep Survey is enabling to trace from one single survey the star formation history in the Universe over 12 billion years of evolution. We find that the star formation rate is strongly linked to the different types of galaxies. While the Luminosity Density of irregular-like galaxies decreased by more than a factor 3.5 from z = 1.2 to z = 0.2, the LD for early-type galaxies increased by a factor 1.7. Star formation happened in several phases, strongly luminosity dependent, with star formation gradually shifting from the first massive galaxies to less massive systems. The peak in SFR at z = 3.5 is identified with the end of the mass assembly of the most luminous galaxies (M-AB(1500 angstrom) < -21). We use the SWIRE Spitzer-IRAC observations of the VVDS-02h field to assemble a flux-limited sample at 3.8 mu m of 1500 galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts and more than 22000 galaxies with photometric redshifts up to z = 2 and build the rest-frame K-band luminosity function and stellar mass density. We find that the global stellar mass density has remained relatively constant since z similar to 1, but the epoch 1 < z < 2 has seen an increase of more than a factor 10 in the stellar mass density of red galaxies selected based on the bimodal distribution of (NUV-r) colors, while in the same period blue galaxies have seen only a modest factor 2 increase. We interpret this as the fast build-up of the red sequence of galaxies, essentially complete by z similar to 1.

Taking advantage of the efficient VIMOS multi-slit spectrograph on the VLT, we are conducting the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey (VVDS), aimed to trace the evolution of galaxies and large-scale structures over more than 90% of the life of the Universe. The VVDS is made of three magnitude selected surveys: the wide survey at IAB = 22.5, the deep survey at IAB = 24, and the ultra-deep survey at IAB = 24.75. To date, the VVDS has assembled more than 45000 redshifts in the range 0 < z ≤ 5. A number of results have been obtained, including a comprehensive view of the luminosity and stellar mass evolution as a function of galaxy type over 0 < z ≤ 2, a detailed look at the evolution of the clustering of galaxies as a function of type and environment, and a complete census of the actively star-forming galaxy population for 1.5 < z ≤ 5. This paper focuses on current highlights and on-going work from the VVDS.

We present a detailed analysis of the Galaxy Stellar Mass Function of galaxies up to z=2.5 as obtained from the VVDS. We estimate the stellar mass from broad-band photometry using 2 different assumptions on the galaxy star formation history and show that the addition of secondary bursts to a continuous star formation history produces systematically higher (up to 40%) stellar masses. At low redshift (z=0.2) we find a substantial population of low-mass galaxies (10^8 Msun at z=1), and a mild mass-dependent average evolution (`mass-downsizing'). In particular our data are consistent with mild/negligible (6x10^10 Msun). For less massive systems the no-evolution scenario is excluded. A large fraction (>=50%) of massive galaxies have been already assembled and converted most of their gas into stars at z=1, ruling out the `dry mergers' as the major mechanism of their assembly history below z=1. This fraction decreases to 33% at z=2. Low-mass systems have decreased continuously in number and mass density (by a factor up to 4) from the present age to z=2, consistently with a prolonged mass assembly also at z, 20 pages with 12 encapsulated figures. We present the first measurements of the Probability Distribution Function (PDF) of galaxy fluctuations in the VIMOS-VLT Deep Survey (VVDS) cone, covering 0.4x0.4 deg between 0.40.8; ii) the formation of bright galaxies is inhibited below a characteristic mass-overdensity threshold whose amplitude increases with redshift and luminosity; iii) the biasing function is non linear in all the redshift bins investigated with non-linear effects of the order of a few to 10% on scales >5Mpc., Comment: 30 pages, 17 figs, Accepted by A&A

A new low frequency radio selected Sample of 125 Quasars complete down to 100 mJy at 408 MHz is pre- sented in this paper. The sample is a part of the B3-VLA sample: 1050 radiosources selected from the B3 catalogue at 408 MHz and observed at the VLA (1465 MHz, C and A congurations). Out of the 352 sources, identied on the POSS-I down to mr 20:0, 172 are quasar candidates. In this paper we give the nal assessment of the quasar sample from spectroscopic observations of the candidates. The nal complete quasar sample consists of 125 objects. Furthermore 3 Bl Lac objects have been identied and two Bl Lac candidates.

Deep representative surveys of galaxies at different epochs are needed to make progress in understanding galaxy evolution. Aims. We describe the completed VIMOS VLT Deep Survey and the final data release of 35 016 galaxies and type-I AGN with measured spectro-scopic redshifts covering all epochs up to redshiftz∼6.7, in areas from 0.142 to 8.7 square degrees, and volumes from 0.5×106to 2×107h−3Mpc3. Methods. We selected samples of galaxies based solely on their i-band magnitude reaching iAB=24.75. Spectra were obtained with VIMOS on the ESO-VLT integrating 0.75 h, 4.5 h, and 18 h for the Wide, Deep, and Ultra-Deep nested surveys, respectively. We demonstrate that any “redshift desert” can be crossed successfully using spectra covering 3650 ≤λ≤9350 Å. A total of 1263 galaxies were again observed independently within the VVDS and from the VIPERS and MASSIV surveys. They were used to establish the redshift measurements reliability, to assess completeness in the VVDS sample, and to provide a weighting scheme taking the survey selection function into account. We describe the main properties of the VVDS samples, and the VVDS is compared to other spectroscopic surveys in the literature. Results. In total we have obtained spectroscopic redshifts for 34 594 galaxies, 422 type-I AGN, and 12 430 Galactic stars. The survey enabled identifying galaxies up to very high redshifts with 4669 redshifts in 1≤ z spec ≤2, 561 in 2≤z spec ≤3, and 468 with z spec >3, and specific populations like Lyman-α emitters were identified out to z = 6.62. We show that the VVDS occupies a unique place in the parameter space defined by area, depth, redshift coverage, and number of spectra. Conclusions. The VIMOS VLT Deep Survey provides a comprehensive survey of the distant universe, covering all epochs since z∼6, or more than 12 Gyr of cosmic time, with a uniform selection, which is the largest such sample to date. A wealth of science results derived from the VVDS have shed new light on the evolution of galaxies and AGN and on their distribution in space over this large cosmic time. The VVDS further demonstrates that large deep spectroscopic redshift surveys over all these epochs in the distant Universe are a key tool to observational cosmology.To enhance the legacy value of the survey, a final public release of the complete VVDS spectroscopic redshift sample is available at http://cesam.lam.fr/vvds.

Accurate BVRI photoelectric photometry and radial velocities derived from high-resolution spectra (0.25 and 0.19 A) are presented for four RR Lyrae variables, namely V2, V15, V29 and V42, in the globular cluster M4 (NGC 6121). The data cover the entire pulsation cycle of the four stars. New epochs are derived from the present data and new periods are calculated for three of the variables using a large data base available in the literature. Particular attention is given to V15. This star presents a small-amplitude radial velocity curve associated with a light curve that seems to be switching from ab- to c-type, suggesting that it might be progressively changing its mode of pulsation while evolving towards the blue part of the RR Lyrae instability strip
