This paper presents 2109 times of minima for 965 objects acquired by 59 members and cooperating observers of the Variable Star and Exoplanet Section of the Czech Astronomical Society (B.R.N.O. Observing project).These observations were submitted to the website of the Variable Star and Exoplanet Section of the Czech Astronomical Society between November 2016 and March 2018.

The Centaur (10199) Chariklo has the first ring system discovered around a small object. It was first observed using stellar occultation in 2013. Stellar occultations allow sizes and shapes to be determined with kilometre accuracy, and provide the characteristics of the occulting object and its vicinity. Aims. Using stellar occultations observed between 2017 and 2020, our aim is to constrain the physical parameters of Chariklo and its rings. We also determine the structure of the rings, and obtain precise astrometrical positions of Chariklo. Methods. We predicted and organised several observational campaigns of stellar occultations by Chariklo. Occultation light curves were measured from the datasets, from which ingress and egress times, and the ring widths and opacity values were obtained. These measurements, combined with results from previous works, allow us to obtain significant constraints on Chariklo's shape and ring structure. Results. We characterise Chariklo's ring system (C1R and C2R), and obtain radii and pole orientations that are consistent with, but more accurate than, results from previous occultations. We confirm the detection of W-shaped structures within C1R and an evident variation in radial width. The observed width ranges between 4.8 and 9.1 km with a mean value of 6.5 km. One dual observation (visible and red) does not reveal any differences in the C1R opacity profiles, indicating a ring particle size larger than a few microns. The C1R ring eccentricity is found to be smaller than 0.022 (3σ), and its width variations may indicate an eccentricity higher than ~0.005. We fit a tri-axial shape to Chariklo's detections over 11 occultations, and determine that Chariklo is consistent with an ellipsoid with semi-axes of 143.8-1.5+1.4, 135.2-2.8+1.4, and 99.1-2.7+5.4 km. Ultimately, we provided seven astrometric positions at a milliarcsecond accuracy level, based on Gaia EDR3, and use it to improve Chariklo's ephemeris. © B. E. The development of transformative technologies for mitigating our global environmental and technological challenges will require significant innovation in the design, development, and manufacturing of advanced materials and chemicals. To achieve this innovation faster than what is possible by traditional human intuition-guided scientific methods, we must transition to a materials informatics-centered paradigm, in which synergies between data science, materials science, and artificial intelligence are leveraged to enable transformative, data-driven discoveries faster than ever before through the use of predictive models and digital twins. While materials informatics is experiencing rapidly increasing use across the materials and chemicals industries, broad adoption is hindered by barriers such as skill gaps, cultural resistance, and data sparsity. We discuss the importance of materials informatics for accelerating technological innovation, describe current barriers and examples of good practices, and offer suggestions for how researchers, funding agencies, and educational institutions can help accelerate the adoption of urgently needed informatics-based toolsets for science in the 21st century.

We present the results from four stellar occultations by (486958) Arrokoth, the flyby target of the New Horizons extended mission. Three of the four efforts led to positive detections of the body, and all constrained the presence of rings and other debris, finding none. Twenty-five mobile stations were deployed for 2017 June 3 and augmented by fixed telescopes. There were no positive detections from this effort. The event on 2017 July 10 was observed by the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy with one very short chord. Twenty-four deployed stations on 2017 July 17 resulted in five chords that clearly showed a complicated shape consistent with a contact binary with rough dimensions of 20 by 30 km for the overall outline. A visible albedo of 10% was derived from these data. Twenty-two systems were deployed for the fourth event on 2018 August 4 and resulted in two chords. The combination of the occultation data and the flyby results provides a significant refinement of the rotation period, now estimated to be 15.9380 ± 0.0005 hr. The occultation data also provided high-precision astrometric constraints on the position of the object that were crucial for supporting the navigation for the New Horizons flyby. This work demonstrates an effective method for obtaining detailed size and shape information and probing for rings and dust on distant Kuiper Belt objects as well as being an important source of positional data that can aid in spacecraft navigation that is particularly useful for small and distant bodies. © 2020. We present results from three world-wide campaigns that resulted in the detections of two single-chord and one multi-chord stellar occultations by the plutino object (84922) 2003 VS2. From the single-chord occultations in 2013 and 2014 we obtained accurate astrometric positions for the object, while from the multi-chord occultation on 2014 November 7, we obtained the parameters of the best-fitting ellipse to the limb of the body at the time of occultation. We also obtained short-term photometry data for the body in order to derive its rotational phase during the occultation. The rotational light curve present a peak-to-peak amplitude of 0.141 ± 0.009 mag. This allows us to reconstruct the 3D shape of the body, with principal semi-axes of a = 313.8 ± 7.1 km, b = 265.5- + 9.8 8.8 km, and c = 247.3- + 43.6 26.6 km, which is not consistent with a Jacobi triaxial equilibrium figure. The derived spherical volume equivalent diameter of 548.3- + 44.6 29.5 km is about 5% larger than the radiometric diameter of 2003 VS2 derived from Herschel data of 523 ± 35 km, but still compatible with it within error bars. From those results we can also derive the geometric albedo (0.123- + 0.014 0.015) and, under the assumption that the object is a Maclaurin spheroid, the density r = 1400- + 300 1000 for the plutino. The disappearances and reappearances of the star during the occultations do not show any compelling evidence for a global atmosphere considering a pressure upper limit of about 1 microbar for a pure nitrogen atmosphere, nor secondary features (e.g., rings or satellite) around the main body. © 2019. We present the results of prompt optical follow-up of the electromagnetic counterpart of the gravitational-wave event GW170817 by the Transient Optical Robotic Observatory of the South Collaboration (TOROS). We detected highly significant dimming in the light curves of the counterpart (Delta g=0.17+-0.03 mag, Delta r=0.14+-0.02 mag, Delta i=0.10 +- 0.03 mag) over the course of only 80 minutes of observations obtained ~35 hr after the trigger with the T80-South telescope. A second epoch of observations, obtained ~59 hr after the event with the EABA 1.5m telescope, confirms the fast fading nature of the transient. The observed colors of the counterpart suggest that this event was a "blue kilonova" relatively free of lanthanides., Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

We present broadband reverberation chamber measurements of the absorption cross section (ACS) of the human body averaged over all directions of incidence and angles of polarization. This frequency-dependent parameter characterizes the interactions between the body and the enclosures of reverberant environments such as aircraft cabins, and is, therefore, important for the determination of the overall Q-factor and, hence, the field strength illuminating equipment inside such enclosures. It also correlates directly with the electromagnetic exposure of occupants of reverberant environments. The average ACS of nine subjects was measured at frequencies over the range 1-8.5 GHz. For a 75-kg male, the ACS varied between 0.18 and 0.45 square meters over this range. ACS also correlated with body surface area for the subjects tested. The results agree well with computational electromagnetic simulations, but are obtained much more rapidly. We have used the obtained values of ACS to estimate the effect of passengers on the Q-factor of a typical airliner cabin.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: It has been demonstrated that increased levels of iron in the brain occur with aging. In this study we investigated the nature of the association between age and SWI-filtered phase values, indicative of iron content, in the subcortical deep gray matter of healthy individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 210 healthy individuals (men: n = 89, women: n = 121), mean age, 39.8 years (standard deviation = 15.5; range = 6–76 years), were imaged on a 3T scanner. Mean MRI phase, mean phase of low-phase voxels, and normalized volumes were determined for total subcortical deep gray matter, caudate, putamen, globus pallidus, thalamus, pulvinar nucleus, hippocampus, amygdala, nucleus accumbens, red nucleus, and substantia nigra. Linear and nonlinear regression models were used to explore the relationship between phase and volume measures, and aging. RESULTS: Mean phase values of subcortical deep gray matter structures showed a quadratic relationship, with individuals in late middle age (40–59 years) having the lowest mean phase values, followed by a reversal of this trend in the elderly. In contrast, mean phase of low-phase voxel measurements showed strong negative linear relationships with aging. Significantly lower phase values were detected in women compared with men (P < .001), whereas no sex differences were observed for mean phase of low-phase voxels. Normalized volume measurements were also linearly related to aging, and women showed smaller normalized volumes of subcortical deep gray matter structures than men (P < .001). Lower mean phase of low-phase voxels was related to decreased volume measures. CONCLUSIONS: A strong association between phase (quadratic effect; phase decreases are followed by increases), mean phase of low-phase voxels (linear effect), volume (linear effect), and age was observed. Low phase was related to brain atrophy.

Objectives: Uncontrolled hemorrhage remains one of the leading causes of trauma deaths and one of the most challenging problems facing emergency medical professionals. Several hemostatic agents have emerged as effective adjuncts in controlling extremity hemorrhage. However, a review of the current literature indicates that none of these agents have proven superior under all conditions and in all wound types. This study compared several hemostatic agents in a lethal penetrating groin wound model where the bleeding site could not be visualized. Methods: A complex groin injury with a small penetrating wound, followed by transection of the femoral vessels and 45 seconds of uncontrolled hemorrhage, was created in 80 swine. The animals were then randomized to five treatment groups (16 animals each). Group 1 was Celox-A (CA), group 2 was combat gauze (CG), group 3 was Chitoflex (CF), group 4 was WoundStat (WS), and group 5 was standard gauze (SG) dressing. Each agent was applied with 5 minutes of manual pressure. Hetastarch (500 mL) was infused over 30 minutes. Hemodynamic parameters were recorded over 180 minutes. Primary endpoints were attainment of initial hemostasis and incidence of rebleeding. Results: Overall, no difference was found among the agents with respect to initial hemostasis, rebleeding, and survival. Localizing effects among the granular agents, with and without delivery mechanisms, revealed that WS performed more poorly in initial hemostasis and survival when compared to CA.

The electromagnetic absorption cross-section (ACS) averaged over polarization and angle-of-incidence of 60 ungrounded adult subjects was measured at microwave frequencies of 1-12 GHz in a reverberation chamber. Average ACS is important in non-ionizing dosimetry and exposure studies, and is closely related to the whole-body averaged specific absorption rate (WBSAR). The average ACS was measured with a statistical uncertainty of less than 3% and high frequency resolution for individuals with a range of body shapes and sizes allowing the statistical distribution of WBSAR over a real population with individual internal and external morphologies to be determined. The average ACS of all subjects was found to vary from 0.15 to 0.4 m(2); for an individual subject it falls with frequency over 1-6 GHz, and then rises slowly over the 6-12 GHz range in which few other studies have been conducted. Average ACS and WBSAR are then used as a surrogate for worst-case ACS/WBSAR, in order to study their variability across a real population compared to literature results from simulations using numerical phantoms with a limited range of anatomies. Correlations with body morphological parameters such as height, mass and waist circumference have been investigated: the strongest correlation is with body surface area (BSA) at all frequencies above 1 GHz, however direct proportionality to BSA is not established until above 5 GHz. When the average ACS is normalized to the BSA, the resulting absorption efficiency shows a negative correlation with the estimated thickness of subcutaneous body fat. Surrogate models and statistical analysis of the measurement data are presented and compared to similar models from the literature. The overall dispersion of measured average WBSAR of the sample of the UK population studied is consistent with the dispersion of simulated worst-case WBSAR across multiple numerical phantom families. The statistical results obtained allow the calibration of human exposure assessments made with particular phantoms to a population with a range of individual morphologies.

Hitherto, rings have been found exclusively around the four giant planets in the Solar System. Rings are natural laboratories in which to study dynamical processes analogous to those that take place during the formation of planetary systems and galaxies. Their presence also tells us about the origin and evolution of the body they encircle. Here we report observations of a multichord stellar occultation that revealed the presence of a ring system around (10199) Chariklo, which is a Centaur-that is, one of a class of small objects orbiting primarily between Jupiter and Neptune-with an equivalent radius of 124â â 9â kilometres (ref. 2). There are two dense rings, with respective widths of about 7 and 3 kilometres, optical depths of 0.4 and 0.06, and orbital radii of 391 and 405 kilometres. The present orientation of the ring is consistent with an edge-on geometry in 2008, which provides a simple explanation for the dimming of the Chariklo system between 1997 and 2008, and for the gradual disappearance of ice and other absorption features in its spectrum over the same period. This implies that the rings are partly composed of water ice. They may be the remnants of a debris disk, possibly confined by embedded, kilometre-sized satellites. © 2014 Macmillan Publishers Limited. Fil: Braga Ribas, F.. This paper describes the design and performance of a wide-band hybrid antenna suitable for use in reverberation chambers. The antenna is characterised over the frequency range 100 MHz to 25 GHz showing that it performs well above 200 MHz although its ultimate highest operating frequency has not been established.

Objective In prior open-label studies, eteplirsen, a phosphorodiamidate morpholino oligomer, enabled dystrophin production in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) with genetic mutations amenable to skipping exon 51. The present study used a double-blind placebo-controlled protocol to test eteplirsen's ability to induce dystrophin production and improve distance walked on the 6-minute walk test (6MWT). Methods DMD boys aged 7 to 13 years, with confirmed deletions correctable by skipping exon 51 and ability to walk 200 to 400 m on 6 MWT, were randomized to weekly intravenous infusions of 30 or 50 mg/kg/wk eteplirsen or placebo for 24 weeks (n = 4/group). Placebo patients switched to 30 or 50 mg/kg eteplirsen (n = 2/group) at week 25; treatment was open label thereafter. All patients had muscle biopsies at baseline and week 48. Efficacy included dystrophin-positive fibers and distance walked on the 6MWT. Results At week 24, the 30 mg/kg eteplirsen patients were biopsied, and percentage of dystrophin-positive fibers was increased to 23% of normal; no increases were detected in placebo-treated patients (p ≤ 0.002). Even greater increases occurred at week 48 (52% and 43% in the 30 and 50 mg/kg cohorts, respectively), suggesting that dystrophin increases with longer treatment. Restoration of functional dystrophin was confirmed by detection of sarcoglycans and neuronal nitric oxide synthase at the sarcolemma. Ambulation-evaluable eteplirsen-treated patients experienced a 67.3 m benefit compared to placebo/delayed patients (p ≤ 0.001). Interpretation Eteplirsen restored dystrophin in the 30 and 50 mg/kg/wk cohorts, and in subsequently treated, placebo-controlled subjects. Duration, more than dose, accounted for dystrophin production, also resulting in ambulation stability. No severe adverse events were encountered. Ann Neurol 2013;74:637–647

Brain cytoplasmic 1 (BC1) RNA is a small non-translated RNA polymerase III transcript. Because this RNA can be detected in the rat posterior pituitary with 35S in situ hybridization autoradiography, it has been hypothesized that this RNA might be transported in the axons of hypothalamo-neurohypophyseal neurons. In the present study, we aimed to determine the cellular localization of BC1 more precisely by using non-radioactive in situ hybridization of BC1 RNA at both the light and electron microscopic levels. Our studies revealed that BC1 RNA was indeed located intra-axonally. Furthermore, BC1 RNA was abundant within a subset of axonal swellings and/or terminals, and was also found in discrete cytoplasmic domains of undilated axonal segments. Using a semiquantitative in situ hybridization approach, we have measured and compared the changes in BC1 RNA and arginine vasopressin (AVP) mRNA during dehydration (chronic salt-loading) and rehydration. Chronic salt-loading significantly increased both BC1 RNA and AVP mRNA. The increase in BC1 RNA labelling (2.5-fold), however, was modest and somewhat less enduring than the increase in AVP mRNA labelling (13-fold). Upon rehydration, both the BC1 and vasopressin transcripts in the posterior pituitary rapidly returned to control values. In conclusion, like vasopressin mRNA, BC1 RNA is transported in axons of the hypothalamo-neurohypophyseal system where it aggregates in a subset of axonal swellings, and its axonal transport is similarly regulated. Therefore, we propose that BC1 RNA might be involved in the axonal targeting, docking and/or transport of AVP or other axonal mRNAs.

The ability of ethyl alcohol to modify responses to stress has been well documented (cf. Pohorecky, 1990). However, the structural substrate mediating these effects of alcohol remains undefined. Using immediate early gene (IEG) expression in the brain as a marker of altered neuronal response, we investigated the effect of acute alcohol exposure on the activity of brain regions of rats exposed to 15 min of restraint stress. Immunocytochemical localization c-Fos protein demonstrated that restraint stress led to an induction of c-Fos expression in several brain structures including cingulate and piriform cortex, cortico-amygdaloid and hippocampo-amygdaloid transition zones, hippocampus, hypothalamus, supramammillary nucleus, and centromedial nucleus of thalamus. An intraperitoneal injection of 2 g/kg alcohol prior to stress decreased c-Fos expression in several but not all of these structures. In particular, alcohol strongly attenuated the stress- induced expression of c-Fos in hippocampus and cingulate cortex. Using slot-blot hybridization, significant induction of c-fos mRNA after restraint stress was demonstrated both in hippocampus and cortex, but prior alcohol exposure specifically attenuated c-fos induction only in the hippocampus. The response of c-fos mRNA expression to stress and alcohol differed from the effects on jun-B, c-jun and jun-D mRNA levels. Perhaps surprisingly, acute exposure to alcohol in otherwise unstressed rats did not induce significant changes in expression of IEGs in comparison to control (saline-injected) animals even with doses sufficient to elevate plasma corticosterone. In summary, these studies demonstrate a selective sensitivity of stress-induced activity of neurons of hippocampus and cingulate cortex to acute alcohol exposure.

The interiors of mass transit vehicles act as pseudo-reverberant environments which are loaded by the bodies of passengers. This study models the broadband loading characteristics of the human body, first by simulation with spherical approximations, then by measurement of nine human subjects in a reverberation chamber. The absorption cross-section of the subjects is calculated from the loaded and unloaded transmission coefficients, and compared to the models and additionally to full-wave simulations conducted during research into human exposure. It is found to vary depending on the physical characteristics of the individual subject, with reliance on each individual characteristic being frequency-dependent. Sources of systematic error are identified and further refinements to the measurement and calculation are suggested.

Stress consistently has been found to activate peripheral and central catecholamine systems. Dopamine (DA) turnover in the prefrontal cortex is especially sensitive to stress produced by relatively mild footshock, conditioned fear, or exposure to a novel cage. Because lesions of the central nucleus of the amygdala block the effects of both stress and fear in many experimental paradigms, the present study evaluated whether such lesions would block stress-induced increases in prefrontal dopamine turnover using either mild footshock or novelty as stressors. In Experiment 1 electrolytic lesions of the central nucleus of the amygdala attenuated the increase in the dopamine metabolite homovanillic acid (HVA) in the prefrontal cortex evaluated in post-mortem tissue normally produced by footshock. In Experiment 2 similar lesions attenuated the increase in dopamine turnover in the prefrontal cortex using a different stressor, novelty, and a different measure of dopamine turnover, DOPAC/DA ratios. These data provide further evidence for the critical role of the amygdala in stress.

At microwave frequencies, an aircraft can be modelled as a multi-mode, reverberant EM environment. The presence of people on board will damp its resonances, thus lowering their Q-factors and increasing the propagation loss between two points. The relevant parameter is the mean absorption cross section of the body, which is of the order of one sixth of body surface area. For EM simulations of aircraft it is necessary to develop broadband numerical phantoms to represent the people on the aircraft. These should be at an appropriate level of detail somewhere between millimetre-resolution dosimetry phantoms and homogenous dielectric spheres.

Vasopressin mRNA content was studied by quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in the hypothalami of rats chronically treated with ethanol (EtOH). Quantitative RT-PCR allows for the accurate measurement of peptide mRNA levels in discrete regions of the brain of individual animals. EtOH markedly reduced the level of vasopressin mRNA. Furthermore, salt loading was ineffective in inducing a significant increase in vasopressin mRNA level in EtOH-treated rats, unlike in controls. The present results suggest that EtOH not only decreases vasopressin mRNA content in the rat hypothalamus, but also impairs its capacity to respond to salt loading.

The present study evaluated the effects of intraventricular or intracerebral administration of pertussis toxin on fear-potentiated startle (a measure of conditioned fear) and shock sensitization (a measure of unconditioned fear). In Experiment 1 all animals were unilaterally implanted with cannulae into the lateral ventricle 1 week prior to 2 days of fear conditioning (ten light-shock pairings on each of 2 days). Five days later, animals were infused with either 1 microgram pertussis toxin or saline and tested for fear-potentiated startle 24 h after infusion and tested for shock sensitization 26 or 50 h after infusion. Pertussis toxin blocked the ability of a light conditioned stimulus to facilitate startle but did not alter the ability of acute footshock to increase startle amplitude in the same animals. In Experiment 2 bilateral infusion of 1 microgram pertussis toxin into the basolateral nuclei of the amygdala, but not the interpositus nuclei of the cerebellum, also blocked fear-potentiated startle when animals were tested 6 h after infusion. These findings suggest a role for pertussis toxin sensitive G-proteins, perhaps within the amygdala, in the expression of conditioned but not unconditioned fear.

Previous studies have demonstrated that chronic stress increases and antidepressant treatments decrease levels of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) in locus coeruleus (LC). In the present study, the influence of chronic antidepressant treatment on the induction of TH immunoreactivity in response to cold stress is examined. It was found that chronic imipramine pretreatment (18 days) attenuated the induction of TH in response to cold stress, resulting in levels of TH immunoreactivity not different from control. In contrast, imipramine pretreatment for 1 or 7 days was not sufficient to normalize the stress-induced elevation of TH immunoreactivity. These findings raise the possibility that the therapeutic action of antidepressants may be derived, in part, from the ability of these treatments to normalize levels of TH and thereby the function of the NE neurotransmitter system under conditions of stress.

Intracerebroventricular infusion of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) (0.1–1.0 micrograms) produced a pronounced, dose-dependent enhancement of the acoustic startle reflex in rats. This excitatory effect began about 20–30 min after infusion, grew steadily over the 2 hr test period, and lasted at least 6 hr. Higher doses of CRF (10 micrograms) often produced marked facilitation and then inhibition of startle that oscillated repeatedly with a period of 10–20 min. CRF- enhanced startle did not result from an increase in sensitization produced by repetition of the startle stimulus or from a blockade of habituation. Peripheral injections of the autonomic ganglionic blockers hexamethonium (10 mg/kg) or chlorisondamine (3 mg/kg) slightly attenuated the magnitude of CRF-enhanced startle, suggesting a partial role of peripheral sympathetic activation. Intracerebroventricular infusion of the CRF antagonist alpha-helical CRF9–41 (alpha hCRF; 25 or 50 micrograms) blocked CRF-enhanced startle when infused 5 min prior to CRF, indicating a central site of action. CRF-enhanced startle also was reversed when alpha hCRF was given 90 min after infusion of CRF. This suggests that exogenously applied CRF remains in the brain for a very long time after administration or that CRF given exogenously initiates a process that results in a long-lasting activation of endogenous CRF. Because the startle reflex is elevated by both conditioned and unconditioned fear, these data lend further support to the idea that CRF infusion produces a behavioral state that resembles fear or anxiety. Because startle is mediated by a well-defined neural pathway, CRF-enhanced startle may provide a useful behavioral assay to analyze the neural systems upon which exogenous CRF acts to produce its behavioral effects.

Intracerebroventricular (icv) infusion of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) was previously found to produce a long-lasting, dose- dependent (0.1–1.0 microgram) increase in the amplitude of the acoustic startle reflex. The present study sought to determine where in the CNS CRF acts to increase startle. Intracisternal infusion of CRF (0.1–1.0 microgram) increased startle with a time course and magnitude similar to that produced by icv CRF, unlike intrathecal infusion, which produced a small, more rapid enhancement of startle. While lesions of the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus had no effect on icv CRF-enhanced startle, bilateral lesions of the central nucleus of the amygdala significantly attenuated the excitatory effect of icv CRF but had no effect on intrathecal CRF-enhanced startle. Even though lesions of the amygdala blocked icv CRF-enhanced startle, local infusion of CRF into the amygdala did not significantly elevate startle. The present data indicate that the amygdala is part of the neural circuitry required for icv CRF to elevate startle, but does not appear to be the primary receptor area where CRF acts. The involvement of the amygdala in icv CRF-enhanced startle is consistent with the hypothesis that both the amygdala and CRF are critically involved in fear and stress.

Recent studies have demonstrated that chronic stress increases the firing rate and expression of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) in neurons of the locus coeruleus (LC), the major noradrenergic nucleus in brain. The present study was undertaken to examine the influence of chronic stress and other treatments known to influence the activity of LC neurons on the cyclic AMP (cAMP) second messenger system in these neurons. Chronic (5 days) cold exposure significantly increased levels of TH immunoreactivity in the LC, as previously reported, but not in substantia nigra (SN) or ventral tegmentum (VT), two dopaminergic nuclei studied for comparison. Chronic cold exposure increased levels of cAMP-dependent protein kinase activity in soluble, but not particulate, fractions of the LC, and increased basal and GTP- and forskolin-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity in this brain region. In contrast, levels of the protein kinase and adenylate cyclase in VT, SN, and frontal cortex were not significantly influenced by cold exposure. To study further the relationship between regulation of LC firing rate, TH expression, and the cAMP system in the LC, other treatments known to influence TH were examined. Reserpine treatment, shown previously to increase levels of TH, was found to increase both LC firing rate and levels of soluble cAMP-dependent protein kinase activity in the LC. 6-Hydroxydopamine, shown previously to increase levels of TH and firing rate of LC neurons, also increased soluble levels of protein kinase activity. Other treatments known to either increase (adrenalectomy) or decrease (chronic imipramine) levels of TH in the LC were also found to increase or decrease, respectively, levels of cAMP-dependent protein kinase activity in this brain region.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) and norepinephrine (NE) mediate many hormonal, autonomic, and behavioral effects of acute stress, and it is possible that an interaction between these neurotransmitters could underlie neuronal adaptations in response to chronic stress. To test this hypothesis, the influence of chronically administered CRF and a specific CRF antagonist, alpha-helical CRF, on the induction of tyrosine hydroxylase, the rate-limiting enzyme in NE biosynthesis, was examined in the rat locus coeruleus (LC). We now report that administration of alpha-helical CRF specifically blocks the induction of tyrosine hydroxylase in response to a repeated intermittent stress paradigm involving foot shock and noise stress but has no effect on steady-state levels of the enzyme in nonstressed animals or on the induction of the enzyme in response to reserpine treatment. In addition, repeated administration of CRF alone for 5 days, like chronic stress, increases levels of tyrosine hydroxylase in LC. The results demonstrate that endogenous CRF is necessary for the induction of tyrosine hydroxylase in response to this stress paradigm and that exogenously administered CRF is sufficient for the regulation of this enzyme in nonstressed rats. These findings may prove important in elucidating mechanisms by which chronic stress triggers and sustains the biochemical alterations associated with some stress-related psychiatric disorders.

The present study evaluated the effect of septal lesions on baseline startle amplitude, potentiated startle (a measure of conditioned fear), and the ability of either buspirone or diazepam to block potentiated startle. Baseline responding to an acoustic stimulus was obtained for all rats, followed by potentiated startle training (ten light-shock pairings on each of two days). Rats were then given bilateral electrolytic lesions of the septum or sham surgery. Four and seven days following surgery all rats were tested again for baseline startle amplitude. Ten days postsurgery, rats were injected with either 5.0 mg/kg buspirone or vehicle and tested for potentiated startle (increased acoustic startle in the presence of a light previously paired with shock). Five days later septal-lesioned animals were injected with either 5.0 mg/kg of diazepam or vehicle and again tested for potentiated startle. Septal lesions increased baseline startle amplitude significantly, but did not alter the magnitude of potentiated startle or impair the ability of buspirone or diazepam to block potentiated startle. In Experiment 2 rats were trained using the above procedures, and were subsequently given discrete bilateral lesions of the lateral septum or sham surgery. Lateral septal lesions again had no effect on the magnitude of potentiated startle. These findings do not support an involvement of the septum in the inhibition of fear, or in the mediation of the anxiolytic effects of buspirone or diazepam.

A measurement methodology for polarization and angle of incidence averaged electromagnetic absorption cross-section using a reverberation chamber is presented. The method is optimized for simultaneous rapid and accurate determination of average absorption cross-section over the frequency range 1–15 GHz, making it suitable for use in human absorption and exposure studies. The typical measurement time of the subject is about 8 min with a corresponding statistical uncertainty of about 3% in the measured absorption cross-section. The method is validated by comparing measurements on a spherical phantom with Mie series calculations. The efficacy of the method is demonstrated with measurements of the posture dependence of the absorption cross-section of a human subject and an investigation of the effects of clothing on the measured absorption which are important considerations for the practical design of experiments for studies on human subjects.

Receptors for N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) seem to have a critical role in synaptic plasticity. NMDA antagonists (such as AP5) prevent induction of long-term potentiation, an activity-dependent enhancement of synaptic efficacy mediated by neural mechanisms that might also underlie learning and memory. They also attenuate memory formation in several behavioural tasks; there are few data, however, implicating an NMDA-sensitive measure of conditioning based on local infusion of antagonists into a brain area tightly coupled to the behavioural response used to assess conditioning. We now show that NMDA antagonists infused into the amygdala block the acquisition, but not the expression, of fear conditioning measured with a behavioural assay mediated by a defined neural circuit (fear-potentiation of the acoustic startle reflex). This effect showed anatomical and pharmacological specificity, and was not attributable to reduced salience of the stimuli of light or shock used in training. The data indicate that an NMDA-dependent process in the amygdala subserves associative fear conditioning.

Many studies have investigated the role of the septum and the amygdala in emotional behavior. While the literature is somewhat inconsistent, most studies suggest a role for the septal nuclei in the inhibition of fear and stress responses (at the behavioral, autonomic and hormonal levels) while the central nucleus of the amygdala is involved in the production of such responses. The present study examined the ability of lesions of the central nucleus of the amygdala to block the excitatory effects of complete septal ablation on the acoustic startle reflex. Septal ablation produced a significant increase in startle amplitude which was blocked by concomitant lesions of the central nucleus of the amygdala. These results suggest that the increase in startle amplitude resulting from septal damage might be due to a disinhibition of neuronal activity in the central nucleus of the amygdala, a structure known to mediate the increase in startle associated with conditioned and unconditioned fear, or from antagonistic interactions at other target sites which themselves modulate startle.

The results of three studies on the effect of gas cooking on the lung function of children are reported. The studies which have been carried out in England and Scotland with children aged 6-11, 6-7 and 5-6 years, respectively, show that there is only a weak association between indoor levels of NO2 and respiratory illness. Nevertheless, the consistency of the difference in the rate of respiratory diseases in children from homes with electric and gas cookers suggest there is some hazard to the use of unflued gas appliances which may warrant further epidemiological investigation.

The astronomical events registered in photographic plates are unique. A remarkable interest in using old plates in many areas of the current astronomical research is widely recognized by the IAU. There are almost ten thousand plates in several collections at the Cordoba Observatory and most of them are nearly one century old. This photographic material is difficult to handle in order to get the information stored in it. The goal of this project is to make a digital archive of images of these collections. In this first survey plates are being scanned with a standard commercial transparency scanner. These low spatial resolution, low digital resolution and low signal-to-noise ratio images are intended for facilitating handling and visual inspection. However, one arc-second positions can be obtained. Photometric quality has not been yet determined. Otherwise high quality digital images can be acquired with a microdenstitometer based on a scientific grade CCD whose implementation is at its final stage. The possibility of using a better-performance scanner is being evaluated. It is planned to permit the access to low-resolution images via internet. High-resolution images of selected zones will be available upon request. At this first stage, collections totally digitized at low resolution are:Carte du Ciel and Small Magellanic Cloud Zones. Gaviola's Eta Carinae Spectra and Pulkovo Zones are still in process.
