Abstract

Abstract An offline search for a neutrino counterpart to gravitational-wave (GW) events detected during the second observation run (O2) of Advanced-LIGO and Advanced-Virgo performed with ANTARES data is presented. In addition to the search for long tracks induced by $$\nu _\mu $$ νμ ($${\overline{\nu }}_{\mu }$$ ν¯μ ) charged current interactions, a search for showering events induced by interactions of neutrinos of any flavour is conducted. The severe spatial and time coincidence provided by the gravitational-wave alert allows regions above the detector horizon to be probed, extending the ANTARES sensitivity over the entire sky. The results of this all-neutrino-flavour and all-sky time dependent analysis are presented. The search for prompt neutrino emission within ±500 s around the time of six GW events yields no neutrino counterparts. Upper limits on the neutrino spectral fluence and constraints on the isotropic energy radiated via high-energy neutrinos (from a few TeV to a few tens of PeV) are set for each GW event analysed.

Abstract

Abstract KM3NeT is a research infrastructure located in the Mediterranean Sea, that will consist of two deep-sea Cherenkov neutrino detectors. With one detector (ARCA), the KM3NeT Collaboration aims at identifying and studying TeV–PeV astrophysical neutrino sources. With the other detector (ORCA), the neutrino mass ordering will be determined by studying GeV-scale atmospheric neutrino oscillations. The first KM3NeT detection units were deployed at the Italian and French sites between 2015 and 2017. In this paper, a description of the detector is presented, together with a summary of the procedures used to calibrate the detector in-situ. Finally, the measurement of the atmospheric muon flux between 2232–3386 m seawater depth is obtained.

Abstract

Abstract The ANTARES neutrino telescope has an energy threshold of a few tens of GeV. This allows to study the phenomenon of atmospheric muon neutrino disappearance due to neutrino oscillations. In a similar way, constraints on the 3+1 neutrino model, which foresees the existence of one sterile neutrino, can be inferred. Using data collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope from 2007 to 2016, a new measurement of Δm 32 2 and θ 23 has been performed — which is consistent with world best-fit values — and constraints on the 3+1 neutrino model have been derived.

Abstract

Abstract One of the main objectives of the ANTARES telescope is the search for point-like neutrino sources. Both the pointing accuracy and the angular resolution of the detector are important in this context and a reliable way to evaluate this performance is needed. In order to measure the pointing accuracy of the detector, one possibility is to study the shadow of the Moon, i.e. the deficit of the atmospheric muon flux from the direction of the Moon induced by the absorption of cosmic rays. Analysing the data taken between 2007 and 2016, the Moon shadow is observed with $$3.5\sigma $$ 3.5σ statistical significance. The detector angular resolution for downward-going muons is $$0.73^{\circ }\pm 0.14^{\circ }.$$ 0.73∘±0.14∘. The resulting pointing performance is consistent with the expectations. An independent check of the telescope pointing accuracy is realised with the data collected by a shower array detector onboard of a ship temporarily moving around the ANTARES location.

5. The Urban Metabolism of Lima: Perspectives and Policy Indications for GHG Emission Reductions

Abstract

The urban metabolism of Metropolitan Lima, the largest urban agglomeration in Peru, which has recently surpassed 10 million inhabitants, was analyzed in this study. This coastal megacity, located within the Rimac, Chillón, and Lurin watersheds constitutes the socioeconomic center of the country and is the hub of the main import and export routes. A multi-layer approach was used to explore material and energy flows in the Peruvian capital for a 10-year timeframe. Results show that in 2006 the GDP of the 49 districts that shape the metropolitan area of Lima was 105.2 billion USD-PPP, while in 2014 it reached about 200 billion USD-PPP. Based on this growth, we highlight that energy, electricity and water flows experienced a linear increase with respect to GDP, being the electricity consumption in years 2006, 2011 and 2014, 7295, 10,112, and 11,465 GWh, respectively. Regarding demographics, population growth ratios of GDP (650%), electricity consumption (400%), solid waste production (250%), and water (100%) confirm the results of super linear scaling found by Kennedy et al. (2015) for the other megacities. Finally, the increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions was computed following an important shift in the primary energy sources to produce electricity. The most important change was linked to the shift from hydropower to natural gas, a trend that initiated in 2006. For instance, in 2001 79% of the total electricity production came from hydropower, whereas in 2014 69% was linked to natural gas. This shift produced an increase of GHG emissions of more than 200% in 2014 when compared to the electricity generation mix of 2001. Following these results, we strongly encourage policies for the decarbonization of the electricity production sector, as well as for mobility infrastructures, e.g., electric public and transport sector, with a progressive shift toward electric mobility.

Abstract

Neutrino detectors participate in the indirect search for the fundamental constituents of dark matter (DM) in form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). In WIMP scenarios, candidate DM particles can pair-annihilate into Standard Model products, yielding considerable fluxes of high-energy neutrinos. A detector like ANTARES, located in the Northern Hemisphere, is able to perform a complementary search looking towards the Galactic Centre, where a high density of dark matter is thought to accumulate. Both this directional information and the spectral features of annihilating DM pairs are entered into an unbinned likelihood method to scan the data set in search for DM-like signals in ANTARES data. Results obtained upon unblinding 3170 days of data reconstructed with updated methods are presented, which provides a larger, and more accurate, data set than a previously published result using 2101 days. A non-observation of dark matter is converted into limits on the velocity-averaged cross section for WIMP pair annihilation.

Abstract

Abstract Cherenkov light induced by radioactive decay products is one of the major sources of background light for deep-sea neutrino telescopes such as ANTARES. These decays are at the same time a powerful calibration source. Using data collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope from mid 2008 to 2017, the time evolution of the photon detection efficiency of optical modules is studied. A modest loss of only 20% in 9 years is observed. The relative time calibration between adjacent modules is derived as well.

Abstract

Abstract Advanced LIGO detected a significant gravitational wave signal (GW170104) originating from the coalescence of two black holes during the second observation run on January 4th, 2017. An all-sky high-energy neutrino follow-up search has been made using data from the Antares neutrino telescope, including both upgoing and downgoing events in two separate analyses. No neutrino candidates were found within $$\pm 500$$ ± 500 s around the GW event time nor any time clustering of events over an extended time window of $$\pm 3$$ ± 3 months. The non-detection is used to constrain isotropic-equivalent high-energy neutrino emission from GW170104 to less than $$\sim {1.2}\times 10^{{55}}$$ ∼ 1.2 × 10 55 erg for a $$E^{-2}$$ E - 2 spectrum. This constraint is valid in the energy range corresponding to the 5–95% quantiles of the neutrino flux [3.2 TeV; 3.6 PeV], if the GW emitter was below the Antares horizon at the alert time.

Abstract

Abstract A search for magnetic monopoles using five years of data recorded with the ANTARES neutrino telescope from January 2008 to December 2012 with a total live time of 1121 days is presented. The analysis is carried out in the range β > 0.6 of magnetic monopole velocities using a strategy based on run-by-run Monte Carlo simulations. No signal above the background expectation from atmospheric muons and atmospheric neutrinos is observed, and upper limits are set on the magnetic monopole flux ranging from 5.7 × 10−16 to 1.5 × 10−18 cm−2·s−1·sr−1.

Abstract

Abstract A novel algorithm to reconstruct neutrino-induced particle showers within the ANTARES neutrino telescope is presented. The method achieves a median angular resolution of $$6^\circ $$ 6 ∘ for shower energies below 100 TeV. Applying this algorithm to 6 years of data taken with the ANTARES detector, 8 events with reconstructed shower energies above 10 TeV are observed. This is consistent with the expectation of about 5 events from atmospheric backgrounds, but also compatible with diffuse astrophysical flux measurements by the IceCube collaboration, from which 2–4 additional events are expected. A $$90\%$$ 90 % C.L. upper limit on the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux with a value per neutrino flavour of $$\text {E}^2\cdot \Phi ^{90\%} = 4.9 \cdot 10^{-8}\,\mathrm {GeV} \cdot \mathrm {cm^{-2} \cdot s^{-1}\cdot sr^{-1}}$$ E 2 · Φ 90 % = 4.9 · 10 - 8 GeV · cm - 2 · s - 1 · sr - 1 is set, applicable to the energy range from 23 TeV to 7.8 PeV, assuming an unbroken $$\text {E}^{-2}$$ E - 2 spectrum and neutrino flavour equipartition at Earth.

Abstract

Using data recorded with the ANTARES telescope from 2007 to 2015, a new search for dark matter annihilation in the Milky Way has been performed. Three halo models and five annihilation channels, WIMP+WIMP→bb¯,W+W−,τ+τ−,μ+μ− and νν¯, with WIMP masses ranging from 50 GeVc2 to 100 TeVc2, were considered. No excess over the expected background was found, and limits on the thermally averaged annihilation cross-section were set.

Abstract

Abstract Studying atmospheric neutrino oscillations in the few-GeV range with a multi-megaton detector promises to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy. This is the main science goal pursued by the future KM3NeT/ORCA water Cherenkov detector in the Mediterranean Sea. In this paper, the processes that limit the obtainable resolution in both energy and direction in charged-current neutrino events in the ORCA detector are investigated. These processes include the composition of the hadronic fragmentation products, the subsequent particle propagation and the photon-sampling fraction of the detector. GEANT simulations of neutrino interactions in seawater produced by GENIE are used to study the effects in the 1-20 GeV range. It is found that fluctuations in the hadronic cascade in conjunction with the variation of the inelasticity y are most detrimental to the resolutions. The effect of limited photon sampling in the detector is of significantly less importance. These results will therefore also be applicable to similar detectors/media, such as those in ice.

Abstract

Astrophysical sources of gravitational waves, such as binary neutron star and black hole mergers or core-collapse supernovae, can drive relativistic outflows, giving rise to non-thermal high-energy emission. High-energy neutrinos are signatures of such outflows. The detection of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from common sources could help establish the connection between the dynamics of the progenitor and the properties of the outflow. We searched for associated emission of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from astrophysical transients with minimal assumptions using data from Advanced LIGO from its first observing run O1, and data from the A ntares and IceCube neutrino observatories from the same time period. We focused on candidate events whose astrophysical origins could not be determined from a single messenger. We found no significant coincident candidate, which we used to constrain the rate density of astrophysical sources dependent on their gravitational-wave and neutrino emission processes.

Abstract

Accounting for genetic variation is an essential consideration during human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) investigation. Nanopore sequencing preserves proviral integrity by passing long genomic fragments through ionic channels, allowing reads that span the entire genome of different viral quasispecies (vQS). However, this sequencing method has suffered from high error rates, limiting its utility. This was the inspiration behind HIV-Quasipore: an HIV-1-specific Nanopore basecaller suite designed to overcome these error rates through training with gold-standard data. It comprises three deep learning-based R9.4.1 basecallers: fast, high accuracy (HAC), super accuracy (SUP), and two R10.3 deep learning-based basecallers: HAC and SUP. This was accomplished by sequencing the HIV-1 J-Lat 10.6 cell line using Nanopore and high-quality Sanger techniques. Training significantly reduced basecaller error rates across all models (Student’s one-sided t-test; p = 0.0) where median error rates were 0.0189, 0.0018, 0.0008, for R9.4.1 HIV-Quasipore-fast, HAC, SUP, and 0.0007, 0.0011 for R10.3 HIV-Quasipore-HAC, and SUP, respectively. This improved quality reduces the resolution needed to accurately detect a vQS from 22.4 to 2.6% of total positional coverage for R9.4.1 HIV-Quasipore-fast, 6.9 to 0.5% for R9.4.1 HIV-Quasipore-HAC, 4.5 to 0.3% for R9.4.1 HIV-Quasipore-SUP, 8.0 to 0.3% for R10.3 HIV-Quasipore-HAC, and 5.4 to 0.3% for R10.3 HIV-Quasipore-SUP. This was consistently observed across the entire J-Lat 10.6 genome and maintained across longer reads. Reads with greater than 8,000 nucleotides display a median nucleotide identity of 0.9819, 0.9982, and 0.9991, for R9.4.1 HIV-Quasipore-fast, HAC, SUP, and 0.9993, 0.9988 for R10.3 HIV-Quasipore-HAC, and SUP, respectively. To evaluate the robustness of this tool against unseen data, HIV-Quasipore and their corresponding pretrained basecallers were used to sequence the J-Lat 9.2 cell line and a clinical isolate acquired from the Drexel Medicine CARES cohort. When sample reads were compared against their corresponding consensus sequence, all HIV-Quasipore basecallers displayed higher median alignment accuracies than their pretrained counterparts for both the J-Lat 9.2 cell line and clinical isolate. Using Nanopore sequencing can allow investigators to explore topics, such as vQS profile detection, HIV-1 integration site analysis, whole genome amplification, gene coevolution, and CRISPR-induced indel detection, among others. Abstract

The Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR)/Cas9 gene editing system has been shown to be effective at inhibiting human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). Studies have not consistently used a trackable dual reporter system to determine what cells received the Cas9/gRNA to determine the overall knockdown of HIV. Some studies have used stably transduced cells under drug selection to accomplish this goal. Here a two-color system was used that allows tracking of viral protein expression and which cells received the CRISPR/Cas9 system. These experiments ensured that each gRNA used was a perfect match to the intended target to remove this variable. The data showed that gRNAs targeting the transactivation response element (TAR) region or other highly conserved regions of the HIV-1 genome were effective at stopping viral gene expression, with multiple assays demonstrating greater than 95 percent reduction. Conversely, gRNAs targeting conserved sites of the 5’ portion of the U3 region were largely ineffective, demonstrating that the location of edits in the long terminal repeat (LTR) matter with respect to function. In addition, it was observed that a gRNA targeting Tat was effective in a T-cell model of HIV-1 latency. Taken together, these studies demonstrated gRNAs designed to highly conserved functional regions have near 100% efficacy in vitro in cells known to have received the Cas9/gRNA pair.

Abstract

S100A8 and S100A9 are members of the Alarmin family; these proteins are abundantly expressed in neutrophils, form a heterodimer complex, and are secreted in plasma on pathogen infection or acute inflammatory diseases. Recently, both proteins were identified as novel biomarkers of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and were shown to play key roles in inducing an aggressive inflammatory response by mediating the release of large amounts of pro-inflammatory cytokines, called the "cytokine storm." Although co-infection with SARS-CoV-2 in people living with HIV-1 may result in an immunocompromised status, the role of the S100A8/A9 complex in HIV-1 replication in primary T cells and macrophages is still unclear. Here, we evaluated the roles of the proteins in HIV replication to elucidate their functions. We found that the complex had no impact on virus replication in both cell types; however, the subunits of S100A8 and S100A9 inhibit HIV in macrophages. These findings provide important insights into the regulation of HIV viral loads during SARS-CoV-2 co-infection.

19. Alternative Possibilities

Abstract

This chapter focuses on the connection between doing something freely and being able to do otherwise than one did. According to the principle of alternative possibilities for free action, a person did something freely at a time only if, at that time, it was open to her or him to do something else instead. An attempted counterexample to this principle based on what is known as a Frankfurt-style story is explained and discussed, as are compatibilist and incompatibilist interpretations of the principle. The well-known Consequence Argument for incompatibilism is explained and evaluated, as is a distinction between not being forced to do something and being able to do otherwise. A related topic of discussion is whether not being forced to do something, rather than being able to do otherwise, is necessary for free action.

20. More Skeptical Arguments

Abstract

This chapter examines a pair of arguments for the nonexistence of free will. One of them is based on the idea that free will depends on agent causation, which is causation of an effect by an agent rather than by events. The other argument is based on the idea that free actions must be uncaused. Both arguments are argued to be unpersuasive. It is argued, more specifically, that we lack good reason to believe that free will depends on agent causation and that this is true as well of the claim that free actions must be uncaused. The chapter’s primary aim is to explain certain incompatibilist ideas about free will more fully than previous chapters did while also extending the discussion of skepticism about free will that began in chapter 6.

21. A Whirlwind Tour

Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of a possible condition that the author calls deep openness. What is needed for people to have deep openness when they make a decision is that more than one option is open to them at the time, given everything as it actually is at the time—their mood, all their thoughts and feelings, their brains, and their environment, along with the entire universe and its entire history. It is explained that this condition, which is claimed by some philosophers to be necessary for deciding freely, depends on the falsity of determinism. A toy model of deep openness is created and used as a springboard for exploring whether deep openness contributes to free will or instead precludes it because of the luck deep openness brings with it. A parallel issue is raised about moral responsibility.

22. Some Sources of Skepticism

Abstract

This chapter examines two kinds of route to the conclusion that free will does not exist. The first features the device of setting the bar for free will absurdly high, and the second highlights a pair of familiar philosophical arguments—the No Free Will Either Way Argument and the Impossible Regress Argument. In response to the first route, data from survey-style studies in social psychology and experimental philosophy are used to show that certain lofty alleged requirements for free will—for example, that free will depends on the existence of souls—in addition to being philosophically unsupported, are not supported by the majority of nonspecialists. Related data on moral responsibility are also presented. The two philosophical arguments are examined and shown to be faulty.

23. Mixing It Up

This chapter has three main goals. The first is to develop a problem that considerations of luck pose for believers in free will who maintain that people decide freely only if their decision is undetermined at the moment they make it. The second goal is to sketch a potential solution to this problem. The potential solution acknowledges the existence of luck in the imagined circumstances and offers an explanation of why the luck involved leaves room for free decision-making. The third goal is to describe a view of how a decision’s being made in the imagined circumstances may make a positive contribution to free will. Related issues discussed include the bearing of luck of the sort at issue on moral responsibility, how neonates might develop into free and morally responsible agents, and the bearing of Frankfurt-style stories on the chapter’s main topics.

This introductory chapter sets the stage for the rest of the book by clarifying some of the key concepts, discussing why people care about free will, providing a preliminary sketch of the author’s own view of free will, and articulating the primary aim of the book. Concepts clarified include decision-making, the ability to do otherwise than one did, moral responsibility, and free will itself. Two different approaches to conceptualizing free will are explained. They are dubbed straight and mixed and clarified further in subsequent chapters. It is suggested that one important source of our caring about free will is the value we place on it being up to us—at least sometimes—what we do. What is valued is a certain kind of control over what we do. The book’s primary aim is identified as helping readers to think through the questions raised about free will for themselves.

44. Moral Responsibility and Neuroscience

Abstract

This chapter examines the most prominent neuroscientific source of skepticism about the existence of moral responsibility. This source is a collection of studies that purport to show that various decisions are made unconsciously—that is, that they are made at times at which we are not conscious of making them. The author has argued elsewhere that the data produced by these studies do not warrant the judgment that participants in these studies made decisions unconsciously. In this chapter, it is explained why, even if they did unconsciously make decisions, that poses no significant challenge to the proposition that moral responsibility exists—nor even to the proposition that moral responsibility is widespread. This chapter argues for two main points. First, given the special nature of any decisions identified in the prominent studies discussed, even if the participants did unconsciously make decisions, we cannot properly generalize from that to the claim that all decisions are made unconsciously. Second, even if all decisions are made unconsciously because any consciousness we have of decisions we make routinely lags a bit behind the making of them, this leaves the existence of widespread moral responsibility wide open. The claim that the author operates with a low bar for the existence of moral responsibility that is out of line with lay thinking about free will and moral responsibility is rebutted on the basis of directly relevant studies in experimental philosophy.

45. How can we determine whether or not we have free will?

This chapter performs two main tasks. First, it sets the stage for an answer to the question of how we can determine whether or not we have free will by articulating two competing proposals about what would suffice for freely making a decision to do something. Second, it identifies what we would have to learn in order to know that the conditions set out in those proposals are satisfied and what we would have to learn in order to know that these conditions are not satisfied. Both proposals appeal to consciousness, reasonableness, being well-informed, and the absence of undue pressure. They differ in that one of the proposals can be satisfied even if determinism is true, but the other one cannot.

In order to be doing something intentionally, must one know that one is doing it? Some philosophers have answered yes. Our aim is to test a version of this knowledge thesis, what we call the Knowledge/Awareness Thesis, or KAT. KAT states that an agent is doing something intentionally only if he knows that he is doing it or is aware that he is doing it. Here, using vignettes featuring skilled action and vignettes featuring habitual action, we provide evidence that, in various scenarios, a majority of non-specialists regard agents as intentionally doing things that the agents do not know they are doing and are not aware of doing. This puts pressure on proponents of KAT and leaves it to them to find a way these results can coexist with KAT.

Compatibilists about free will maintain that free will is compatible with determinism, and incompatibilists disagree. Incompatibilist believers in free will have been challenged to solve a problem that luck poses for them—the problem of present luck. This article articulates that challenge and then explores a novel compatibilist view recently proposed by Christian List. It is argued that List’s view, unlike standard compatibilist views, faces a very similar problem about luck.
