Introduction: Black perinatal health workers are part of a tradition of Black people fighting for the well-being of Black communities. The purpose of this article is to better understand the unique experiences of these professionals. Method: Descriptive qualitative research was used to understand Black providers’ experiences in a culturally specific perinatal public health program. A focus group was conducted with seven nurses and community health workers, and thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. Results: Three themes emerged: (a) shared lived experience and parallel process between staff and clients; (b) navigating multiple shifting gazes between clients, public health department, and medical systems; and (c) reproductive justice and community care characterize a culturally informed approach. Discussion: Findings revealed strengths and complexities facing Black nurses and community health workers in their roles. More work is needed in education, practice, and research to better prepare and support nurses and community health workers in culturally specific settings.

Historic levels of public debt and conditions of r g for advanced economies have prompted a reassessment of debt sustainability. Using a continuous-time model in which the debt-to-GDP ratio is stochastic and r g on average, we find that theoretical conditions for sustainability are not closely tied to common metrics of sustainability: the level of debt or whether r g . However, when the primary surplus is bounded, a state-dependent threshold level of public debt determines sustainability. Secular stagnation factors like slow population growth, low productivity growth, or higher output risk carry differing implications for debt sustainability.

As social work’s signature pedagogy, field education socializes students into their professional roles as practitioners. However, for students and field instructors of color, racial microaggressions add another dimension to the practice experience. Utilizing findings from a qualitative study exploring the experiences of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) social work students and agency-based field instructors, this paper highlights experiences of microaggressions in field placement settings. Specifically, BIPOC students and field instructors described being tokenized in agencies, feeling invisible in placement settings, experiencing microaggressions from service users or students, and witnessing microaggressions. Experiences of microaggressions had emotional impacts, and affected participants’ sense of professional identity and confidence. Based on findings, we share recommendations for addressing racial microaggressions within social work field education in order to promote racial equity, including: grounding microaggressions in an ecological approach, unpacking the concept of professionalism, and building capacity of field instructors and agencies to respond to racism and microaggressions. Addressing microaggressions in field education is necessary to support BIPOC students in field placements, honor the work and well-being of racialized social workers who serve as field instructors, disrupt white supremacy, and move the social work field forward in regard to anti-racist practice.

This essay is a reflexive account of my experience of teaching a social justice course during the pandemic. Specifically, I reflect on how centering a pedagogy of care within the course provided a framework for me to be responsive to student needs while also disrupting dominant culture and neoliberal forces in academia. In particular, I highlight sharing power and co-creating meaning, community care, and use of creativity and mindfulness as disruptions to dominant paradigms that I employed in my class that were impactful in the context of the pandemic. I also reflect on how this pedagogical praxis of care has been an instructive and anchoring experience for me as an educator and will impact my teaching going forward.

In the past decade, the use of intersectionality in social work scholarship has grown tremendously. Various applications of intersectionality theorizing have led to new approaches in social work research and, ultimately, have informed implications for practice. In this study, we used critical interpretive synthesis to explore how social work scholars articulate practice implications of an intersectional framework. Seventeen peer-reviewed journal articles that applied intersectionality and included implications for practice were identified. Findings were organized into two domains: (a) implications for practitioners and (b) implications for practice across levels. We discuss the importance of integrating intersectionality theorizing into practice implications in specific and robust ways, and some of the limits of how intersectionality is currently informing practice recommendations within peer-reviewed literature.

Expediency, efficiency, and rapid production within compressed time frames represent markers for research and scholarship within the neoliberal academe. Scholars who wish to resist these practices of knowledge production have articulated the need for Slow scholarship—a slower pace to make room for thinking, creativity, and useful knowledge. While these calls are important for drawing attention to the costs and problems of the neoliberal academy, many scholars have moved beyond “slow” as being uniquely referencing pace and duration, by calling for the different conceptualizations of time, space, and knowing. Guided by post-structural feminisms, we engaged in a research project that moved at the pace of trust in the integrity of our ideas and relationships. Our case study aimed to better understand the ways macro forces such as neoliberalism, criminalization and professionalization shape domestic violence work. This article discusses our praxis of Slow scholarship by showcasing four specific key markers of Slow scholarship in our research; time reimagined, a relational ontology, moving inside and towards complexity, and embodiment. We discuss how Slow scholarship complicates how we understand constructs of productivity and knowledge production, as well as map the ways Slow scholarship offers a praxis of resistance for generating power from the epistemic margins within social work and the neoliberal academy.

The convergence of the COVID-19 pandemic and social/political protest concerning structural anti-Black racism marks a moment for deep reflection and revision of many taken-for-granted assumptions about our research and academic lives as social work scholars. In this reflexive essay we, as two non-Black qualitative social work scholars, explore some of the questions and considerations for social work research that have surfaced since the emergence of these complex social, political, and economic crises. We organize our reflection around what we study, why, and how we go about studying it. We then offer a discussion of various constraints and challenges that emerge in this type of reflective scholarly practice, including an analysis of how contexts of white supremacy culture and neoliberalism shape social work scholarship. We close the essay with a number of recommendations for further reflection for social work scholars, such as reviewing research practices, seeking external research funding, practicing reflexivity, interrogating assumptions about knowledge production, self and community care, and integrating scholarly work into social work curriculum.

The creation and destruction margins of employment (job flows) can be used to measure the employment effects of disruptions to firm credit. Using a firm dynamics model, we establish that a tightening of credit to firms reduces employment primarily by reducing gross job creation, exhibiting stronger effects at new, young, and middle-sized firms. The firm credit channel accounts for, at most, 18%, of the decline in US employment in the Great Recession. Using MSA-level job flows data, we show that the job flows response to identified credit shocks is consistent with our model’s predictions.

Diversity and social justice are central to social work and related curricular content is mandated by accreditation standards. However, research regarding diversity and social justice courses remains limited. This study aimed to better understand how these courses are conceptualized through a qualitative content analysis of course descriptions and objectives from 27 MSW course syllabi. Findings were organized into themes related to knowledge, skills, and values-based content areas. Emergent themes highlighted that these courses center knowledge acquisition, are linked to professional socialization, and have self-awareness as a primary goal. Implications for social work education are discussed.

In 2013, the Violence Against Women Act became one of the first federal laws to explicitly prohibit discrimination against transgender people, yet little is known about its impact in practice. This qualitative study draws on in-depth interviews with transgender people working in domestic and sexual violence advocacy organizations. Building on critical and intersectional perspectives, the findings suggest that the persistence of inequities for trans survivors are tied to the reliance on criminal legal responses, contingent access to gender-specific services, compliance-focused approaches to inclusion, operating theories of gender-based violence, and the diversion of responsibility to LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer) programs. This study highlights the participants’ recommendations for change.

Conditions of secular stagnation—low interest rates, below target inflation, and sluggish output growth—characterize much of the global economy. We consider an overlapping generations, open economy model of secular stagnation, and examine the effect of capital flows on the transmission of stagnation. In a world with a low natural rate of interest, greater capital integration transmits recessions across countries as opposed to lower interest rates. In a global secular stagnation, expansionary fiscal policy carries positive spillovers implying gains from coordination, and fiscal policy is self-financing. Expansionary monetary policy, by contrast, is beggar-thy-neighbor with output gains in one country coming at the expense of the other. Similarly, we find that competitiveness policies including structural labor market reforms or neomercantilist trade policies are also beggar-thy-neighbor in a global secular stagnation.

Conditions of secular stagnation--low interest rates, below target inflation, and sluggish output growth--now characterize much of the global economy. We consider a simple two-country textbook model to examine how capital markets transmit secular stagnation and to study policy externalities across countries. We find capital flows transmit recessions in a world with low interest rates and that policies that attempt to boost national saving are beggar-thy-neighbor. Monetary expansion cannot eliminate a secular stagnation and may have beggar-thy-neighbor effects, while sufficiently large fiscal interventions can eliminate a secular stagnation and carry positive externalities.

This paper formalizes and quantifies the secular stagnation hypothesis, defined as a persistently low or negative natural rate of interest leading to a chronically binding zero lower bound (ZLB). Output-inflation dynamics and policy prescriptions are fundamentally different from those in the standard New Keynesian framework. Using a 56-period quantitative life cycle model, a standard calibration to US data delivers a natural rate ranging from − 1.5 percent to − 2 percent, implying an elevated risk of ZLB episodes for the foreseeable future. We decompose the contribution of demographic and technological factors to the decline in interest rates since 1970 and quantify changes required to restore higher rates. Background: Intertrochanteric fractures occur frequently in older age groups due to osteoporosis. The main aim of surgery is stable fixation that allows to mobilize the patient early. The treatment of choice for trochanteric fracture remains controversial. Treatment of unstable intertrochanteric fracture is still challenging and are being treated successfully with proximal femoral nail.The purpose of this study is to evaluate the functional and radiological outcome and complications of proximal femoral nail in the treatment of unstable intertrochanteric fractures. Method: A retrospective study on 100 patients was conducted with unstable intertrochantric fractures treated with Proximal femoral nail .Fracture were classified according to the AO classification system. The fixation used a proximal femoral nail (9-11mm in diameter), a lag screw (85-105 mm in length) and a antirotation pin (10-15 mm shorter than the lag screw). Clinical evaluation was done using Harris hip score and radiologically at 6 weeks, 12 weeks, 6 months, 9 months and thereafter every 6 months. Results: Most of the patients were between 40-60 years (Mean 50.35 years). Most commonly the mode of injury, wrist involvement & fracture type were RTA (50.3%), Right side (60.3%) and AO type C1 . Mean pain score & Function score (PRWE) were less among patients where radiological parameters were restored. Conclusion: We have suggested that proximal femoral nail offers advantages for the fixation of unstable intertrochanteric fractures with less operative time. It can be easily inserted and provide stable fixation with less complications.

There are many unspoken norms in the culture of academia that are subtly communicated and integrated into academic socialization, from the doctoral training process into advanced professional development. The predominance of white, Western, masculine, heteronormative, and (post)positivist norms of academia historically and contemporarily can create challenges for women of color who engage in scholarship that reflects feminist and cultural values. In this article, we briefly explore the complexities affecting feminist of color scholars negotiating such values within the context of academia and particularly in navigating collaborative scholarship. We respond to these obstacles and complexities by providing a treaty of concrete strategies for creating allied, cooperative working relationships across diverse positionalities that honor these values.

Considerable research highlights the value of mentorship to the professional development of early career faculty in academia, yet less research focuses on factors motivating individuals to provide formal guidance to junior colleagues. Given that new social work faculty, in particular, may not receive sufficient mentoring, understanding what attracts senior scholars to serve as mentors can inform the development of future endeavors to promote mentorship programs in social work. This article presents findings from interviews with eight out of nine faculty leaders from the Summer Institute on Aging and Social Work, an advanced training program in aging research for social work faculty, regarding what prompted their participation in an ongoing mentorship role and how they were impacted by serving in such a capacity. Surface-wave excitation from microstrip antennas is of major concern in many practical antenna applications. In this paper, the challenge of reducing the surface-wave excitation from microstrip antennas in a general way is addressed. The proposed approach is based on a theorem called the reduced surface wave (RSW) theorem. The RSW theorem suggests that by properly selecting the permittivity of the filling material inside the patch cavity, the patch will not excite the dominant TM0 surface-wave mode. A validation of this theorem is demonstrated here for the first time by comparing the mutual coupling between a pair of RSW antennas and a pair of conventional antennas.

“Unsettling Feminism(s): Disrupting the Center, Dismantling Oppressions, Transforming Social Work” took place on May 22–24, 2011 in the campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago. Three participants in the “unconference” reflect on how the conference realized its intent of “unsettling” current thinking and expanding the possibility for transformative and emancipator action. While the unconference provided space for a generative dialogue among a rich diversity of participants, multiple spaces are required for interrogating, integrating, and building multiracial feminism/feminisms and knowledge for the transformative social work we envision as possible.

In interdisciplinary feminist scholarship, intersectionality has been a primary framework for thinking about multiple identities and the interconnectedness of various systems of oppression in women’s lives. This article suggests that to understand this multiplicity more effectively, feminist social work scholars need to develop and use a continuum of different theorizations of intersectionality, with various epistemological bases, that can be strategically applied, depending on the goals of a particular project or practice context. To articulate the experience of diverse groups of women throughout the world, these paradigms must go beyond the usual triumvirate of U.S.-based race, class, and gender to include migration, colonization, sexuality, ability, and other processes of oppression and identity. Drawing on postcolonial, queer, and transnational feminist perspectives, the article offers queer diasporic scholarship as an example of an interdisciplinary approach for conceptualizing the multiplicity of queer South Asian women’s experiences.

We propose an overlapping generations New Keynesian model in which a permanent (or very persistent) slump is possible without any self- correcting force to full employment. The trigger for the slump is a deleveraging shock, which creates an oversupply of savings. Other forces that work in the same direction and can both create or exacerbate the problem include a drop in population growth, an increase in income inequality, and a fall in the relative price of investment. Our model sheds light on the long persistence of the Japanese crisis, the Great Depression, and the slow recovery out of the Great Recession. It also highlights several implications for policy.

This paper describes how the city of Panjim (capital of Goa, in India) and its wider region could meet the multiple goals that sustainable development requires – combining high quality living conditions, a successful economy, and sustainable levels of resource use and waste generation. It outlines the methodologies used and describes the changes needed in the use and management of water and land, infrastructure, buildings and transport systems, and in the governance framework needed to underpin such changes. It uses the term “RUrban” to highlight how this requires a sustainable integration of rural and urban communities, where rural living standards come to match those in urban areas and where cities become net producers of ecological services rather than relying on regional and global resources and waste sinks.

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is a common oral health problem in the Indian subcontinent. It is characterized by a juxtaepithelial inflammatory reaction followed by fibroelastic changes in the lamina propria. Traditionally, it is said to be associated with marked epidermal atrophy and decreased vasculature as the disease advances.To assess the changes in epidermal thickness and mucosal vasculature in various stages of the disease.Patients with histological diagnosis of OSF were included in the study. Demographic data and oral habits of each patient were collected. The severity of OSF was graded histologically according to Pindborg and Sirsat. Epithelial thickness and subepithelial blood vessel area, diameter and perimeter were measured and analysed using Image analysis software IMAGE PRO PLUS version 6.0.Thirty-five patients with OSF were studied. 25 (71.4%) were males and 10 (28.6%) were females with a male to female ratio of 1.3:1. Most patients were in the 31-40 yrs age group. The majority of patients (40%) chewed areca nut/dohra. Each grade of the disease was found to display either hyperplastic or atrophic epithelial changes. The mean blood vessel area, diameter and perimeter did not show any sustained change with the increasing severity (grade) of the disease.These findings question the role of ischaemia in the aetiopathogenesis of oral submucous fibrosis.
