Abstract: Results are reported on a high statistics study of Bhabha scattering at 29 GeV in the polar angle region, |cos θ| < 0.55. The data are consistent with the standard model, and measure vector and axial-vector coupling constants of gv2 = 0.03 ± 0.09 and ga2 = 0.46±0.14. Limits on the QED-cutoff parameters are Λ+ > 154 GeV and Λ- > 220 GeV. Lower limits on scale parameters of composite models are in the range 0.9-2.8 TeV. The partial width of a hypothetical spin-zero boson decaying to e+e- has an upper limit which varies from 6 to 57 MeV corresponding to a boson mass in the range 45-80 GeV/c2. © 1986.

Abstract: The charged particle multiplicity distribution for e+e− annihilations at s = 29 GeV has been measured using the High Resolution Spectrometer at PEP. The multiplicity distribution, expressed as a function of the mean, shows KNO scaling when compared to e+e− data at other energies. Multiplicity distributions for particles selected in different central rapidity spans are presented. All of these are well presented by the Negative binomial distribution. As the rapidity span is narrowed, the distributions become broader and approach a constant value of the parameter k.

Abstract: A search was made in 29 GeV e+e− annihilations for heavy, neutral leptons decaying to e±X∓(ν), where X is a muon or charged meson. Six events with isolated e±X∓ pairs were found for an intergrated luminosity of 106 pb−1. The expected background is 5.5 ± 2.2 events. Limits on σ s B depend on mass and range from 8 to 20 × 10−5 nb.

Abstract: The production of neutral K∗(890) and ρ0 mesons was studied in e+e− annihilation at s =29 GeV using the High Resolution Spectrometer at PEP. Differential cross sections are presented as a function of the scaled energy variable z and compared to π0 and K0 production. The measured multiplicities are 0.84±0.08 ϱ0 mesons and 0.57±0.09 K ∗0 (890) mesons per event for a meson momentum greater than 725 MeV/c. The ratios of vector meson to pseudoscalar meson production for (u,d), s and c quark are compared to predictions of the Lund model.

Abstract: Separate samples of charm quark and light quark (u, d, s) jets have been isolated in an experiment studying e+e− annihilations at s = 29 GeV . The results come from data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 111 pb−1 collected by the High Resolution Spectrometer. Differences were observed in charged multiplicities, momentum distributions, and rapidity of the size expected from the different fragmentation functions and leading particle decay properties of the two samples.

Abstract: Using data samples taken at the ϒ(4S) resonance and nearby continuum e + e - annihilation with the CLEO-II detector at CESR, we have measured the inclusive branching fraction B(B→ηX)=(17.6±1.1±1.2)%, and the momentum distribution of the η mesons from B meson decay. The η yield cannot be explained as arising solely from the decay of intermediate charmed mesons.

Abstract: This paper describes new measurements from CLEO of the inclusive B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{D}}_{\mathit{s}}^{+}$X branching fraction as well as the ${\mathit{B}}^{+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{D}}_{\mathit{s}}^{(\mathrm{*})+}$D${\mathrm{\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}}}^{(\mathrm{*})0}$ and ${\mathit{B}}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{D}}_{\mathit{s}}^{(\mathrm{*})+}$${\mathit{D}}^{(\mathrm{*})\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ branching fractions. The inclusive branching fraction is B(B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{D}}_{\mathit{s}}^{+}$X)=(12.11\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.39\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.88\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.38)% where the first error is statistical, the second is the systematic error, and the third is the error due to the uncertainty in the ${\mathit{D}}_{\mathit{s}}^{+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\varphi}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$ branching fraction. The branching fractions for the B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{D}}_{\mathit{s}}^{(\mathrm{*})+}$D${\mathrm{\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}}}^{(\mathrm{*})}$ modes are found to be between 0.9% and 2.4% and are significantly more precise than previous measurements. The sum of the B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{D}}_{\mathit{s}}^{(\mathrm{*})+}$D${\mathrm{\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}}}^{(\mathrm{*})}$ branching fractions is consistent with the results of fits to the inclusive ${\mathit{D}}_{\mathit{s}}^{+}$ momentum spectrum. Factorization is used to arrive at a value for ${\mathit{f}}_{{\mathit{D}}_{\mathit{s}}}$, the ${\mathit{D}}_{\mathit{s}}^{+}$ decay constant. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: We present measurements of spectral moments extracted from the invariant mass distributions of the final states of hadronic τ decay products recorded in the CLEO detector. From a fit of theoretical predictions to the measurements of spectral moments and the total hadronic decay width of the τ, we determine the strong coupling constant and a set of non-perturbative QCD parameters. The strong coupling constant is measured to be α s ( m τ ) = 0.306 ± 0.024, which when extrapolated to the Z mass, yields α s ( M z ) = 0.114 ± 0.003.

Abstract: We search for the decays ${B}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\ell}}$ in a sample of $2.2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{6}$ charged $B$ decays using the CLEO detector. We see no evidence for a signal in any channel and set upper limits on the branching fractions of $B({B}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}})l2.2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$, $B({B}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}})l2.1\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$, and $B({B}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{e})l1.5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$ at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract: The angular distributions of the decay ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{c}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\Lambda}{e}^{+}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{e}$ have been studied using the CLEO II detector. By performing a three-dimensional maximum likelihood fit, the form factor ratio ${R\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}f}_{2}{/f}_{1}$ is determined to be $\ensuremath{-}0.25\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.14\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.08$. The decay asymmetry parameter of the ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{c}$ averaged over ${q}^{2}$ is calculated to be ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{c}}{\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\ensuremath{-}0.82}_{\ensuremath{-}0.06\ensuremath{-}0.03}^{+0.09+0.06}$.

Abstract: We have observed five new decay modes of the charmed baryon {Lambda}{sup +}{sub {ital c}} using data collected with the CLEO II detector. Four decay modes, {Lambda}{sup +}{sub {ital c}}{r_arrow}{ital p{bar K}}{sup 0}{eta}, {Lambda}{eta}{pi}{sup +}, {Sigma}{sup +}{eta}, and {Sigma}{sup *+}{eta}, are first observations of final states with an {eta} meson, while the fifth mode, {Lambda}{sup +}{sub {ital c}}{r_arrow}{Lambda}{ital {bar K}}{sup 0}{ital K}{sup +}, requires the creation of an {ital s{bar s}} quark pair. We measure the branching fractions of these modes relative to {Lambda}{sup +}{sub {ital c}}{r_arrow}{ital pK}{sup -}{pi}{sup +} to be 0.25{plus_minus}0.04{plus_minus}0.04, 0.35{plus_minus}0.05{plus_minus}0.06, 0.11{plus_minus}0.03{plus_minus}0.02, 0.17{plus_minus}0.04{plus_minus}0.03, and 0.12{plus_minus}0.02{plus_minus}0.02, respectively.

Abstract: Using data collected by the CLEO II detector, we have observed two states decaying to {Lambda}{sup +}{sub {ital c}}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}. Relative to the {Lambda}{sup +}{sub {ital c}}, their mass splittings are measured to be +307.5{plus_minus}0.4{plus_minus}1.0 and +342.2{plus_minus}0.2{plus_minus}0.5MeV/{ital c}{sup 2}, respectively; this represents the first measurement of the less massive state. These two states are consistent with being orbitally excited, isospin zero {Lambda}{sup +}{sub {ital c}} states.

Abstract: Using the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring we have observed the decay modes {Xi}{sup +}{sub {ital c}}{r_arrow}{Xi}{sup 0}{ital e}{sup +}{nu}{sub {ital e}} and {Xi}{sup 0}{sub {ital c}}{r_arrow}{Xi}{sup {minus}}{ital e}{sup +}{nu}{sub {ital e}} by the detection of a {Xi}-positron pair of appropriate invariant mass. We find {ital B} ({Xi}{sup +}{sub {ital c}}{r_arrow}{Xi}{sup 0}{ital e}{sup +}{nu}{sub {ital e}}){sigma}({ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow} {Xi}{sup +}{sub {ital cX}})=1.55{plus_minus}0.33{plus_minus}0.25 pb, {ital B} ({Xi}{sup 0}{sub {ital c}}{r_arrow}{Xi}{sup {minus}}{ital e}{sup +}{nu}{sub {ital e}}){sigma}({ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow} {Xi}{sup 0}{sub {ital cX}})=0.63{plus_minus}0.12{plus_minus}0.10 pb, {ital B} ({Xi}{sup +}{sub {ital c}}{r_arrow}{Xi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +})/ {ital B} ({Xi}{sup +}{sub {ital c}}{r_arrow}{Xi}{sup 0}{ital e}{sup +}{nu}{sub {ital e}})= 0.44{plus_minus}0.11{sub {minus}0.06}{sup +0.11}, and {ital B} ({Xi}{sup 0}{sub {ital c}}{r_arrow}{Xi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +})/{ital B} ({Xi}{sup 0}{sub {ital c}}{r_arrow}{Xi}{sup {minus}}{ital e}{sup +}{nu}{sub {ital e}})= 0.32{plus_minus}0.10{sub {minus}0.03}{sup +0.05}. Assuming the {Xi}{sup +}{sub {ital c}} and {Xi}{sup 0}{sub {ital c}} are equally produced in {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}} annihilation events at 10 GeV, the lifetime ratio of {Xi}{sup +}{sub {ital c}}/{Xi}{sup 0}{sub {ital c}} is measured to be 2.46{plus_minus}0.70{sub {minus}0.23}{sup +0.33}.

Abstract: We consider the decay of [Upsilon](1[ital S]) particles produced at CESR into a photon which is observed by the CLEO detector plus particles which are not seen. These could be real particles which fall outside of our acceptance, or particles which are noninteracting. We report the results of our search fo the process [Upsilon](1[ital S])[r arrow][gamma]+ unseen'' for photon energies [gt]1 GeV, obtaining limits for the case where unseen'' is either a single particle or a particle-antiparticle pair. Our upper limits represent the highest sensitivity measurements for such decays to date.

Abstract: From this partial width we calculate [ital [bar B]][r arrow][ital D][sup *][ital l][bar [nu]] branching fractions that do not depend on [ital f][sub +[minus]]/[ital f][sub 00] or the individual [ital B] lifetimes, but only on the charged to neutral [ital B] lifetime ratio. The product of the CKM matrix element [vert bar][ital V][sub [ital c][ital b]][vert bar] times the normalization of the decay form factor at the point of no recoil of the [ital D][sup *] meson, [ital scrF]([ital y]=1), is determined from a linear fit to the combined differential decay rate of the exclusive [ital [bar B]][r arrow][ital D][sup *][ital l][bar [nu]] decays: [vert bar][ital V][sub [ital c][ital b]][vert bar][ital scrF](1)=0.0351[plus minus]0.0019 (stat) [plus minus]0.0018 (syst) [plus minus]0.0008 (lifetime). The value for [vert bar][ital V][sub [ital c][ital b]][vert bar] is extracted using theoretical calculations of the form factor normalization.

Abstract: We have found the first evidence for the Cabibbo suppressed, color suppressed decay B − → ψπ − in a data sample of 4 million B decays obtained by the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR). The branching ratio is found to be (4.3±2.3)% of the Cabibbo allowed B − → ψK − decay mode, which is consistent with theoretical expectations.

Abstract: Using the CLEO II detector at CESR, we have observed two charmed states, where the higher mass state decays to D0π+ and to D ∗0 π + , while the lower mass state decays to D ∗0 π + , but not to D0π+. The masses and widths were measured to be 2425±2±2 MeV/c2 and 26−7−4+8+4 MeV/c2 for the lower mass state, and 2463±3±3 MeV/c2 and 27−8−5+11+5 MeV/c2 for the higher mass state. Properties of these states, including their decay angular distributions and spin-parity assignments have been studied. The results of this analysis support the identification of these states as the charged L = 1 D 1 (2420) + and D 2 ∗ (2460) + , respectively. The isospin mass splittings between these states and their neutral partners have also been measured. This is the first full reconstruction of any decay mode of the D1 (2420)+ and the first observation of the decay of D 2 ∗ (2460) + to D ∗0 π + .

Abstract: The dynamics of the decay D s + → φe + v e are studied using a sample of 474 events recorded by the CLEO II detector. A three dimensional fit to the decay angles and q 2 is performed to extract the ratios of form factors R 2 = A 2 (0)/ A 1 (0) and R v = V (0 )/ A 1 (0), where A 1 (0) and A 2 (0) are the two axial vector form factors and V (0) is the vector form factor evaluated at q 2 =0. By assuming the single pole parameterization for the form factors, we obtain: R 2 =1.4±0.5±0.3 and R v =0.9±0.6±0.3.

Abstract: The CLEO II detector is used to search for the production of ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}2}$ states in two-photon interactions. We use the signature ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}2}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}J/\ensuremath{\psi}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}${\mathit{l}}^{+}$${\mathit{l}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ with l=e,\ensuremath{\mu}. Using 1.49 ${\mathrm{fb}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ of data taken with beam energies near 5.29 GeV, the two-photon width of the ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}2}$ is determined to be \ensuremath{\Gamma}(${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}2}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma})=1.08\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.30(stat)\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.26(syst) keV, in agreement with predictions from perturbative QCD.

Abstract: Using data collected in the region of the [Upsilon](4[ital S]) resonance with the CLEO II detector operating at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we report on evidence for the production of [Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup ++] and [Sigma][sub [ital e]][sup 0] baryons in [ital B] decays, with [Sigma][sub [ital c]][r arrow][Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +][pi]. This observation is based on 77[plus minus]19[Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup ++] and 76[plus minus]21[Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup 0] candidates from [ital B] decays. We find the product branching fractions [ital scrB]([ital [bar B]][r arrow][Sigma][sub [ital c]][ital X])[ital scrB]([Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +][r arrow][ital pK][sup [minus]][pi][sup +]) for [Sigma][sub [ital c]]=[Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup ++], [Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup 0], and [Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup +] to be (2.1[plus minus]0.8[plus minus]0.7)[times]10[sup [minus]4], (2.3[plus minus]0.8[plus minus]0.7)[times]10[sup [minus]4], and less than 4.8[times]10[sup [minus]4] at 90% confidence level, respectively. A study of the [Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup ++] and [Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup 0] momentum spectra indicates that [ital B] decays to two-body final states with [Sigma][sub [ital c]] are suppressed.

Abstract: A measurement of the cross section for the combined two-photon production of charged pion and kaon pairs is performed using 1.2~$\rm fb^{-1}$ of data collected by the CLEO~II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. The cross section is measured at invariant masses of the two-photon system between 1.5 and 5.0 GeV/$c^2$, and at scattering angles more than $53^\circ$ away from the $\gamma\gamma$ collision axis in the $\gamma\gamma$ center-of-mass frame. The large background of leptonic events is suppressed by utilizing the CsI calorimeter in conjunction with the muon chamber system. The reported cross section is compared with leading order QCD models as well as previous experiments. Abstract: Branching ratios for the dominant Cabibbo-suppressed decays of the $\tau$ lepton have been measured by CLEO~II in $e^+ e^-$ annihilation at CESR ($\sqrt{s} \sim 10.6$~GeV) using kaons with momenta below $0.7\ \rm GeV/c$. The inclusive branching ratio into one charged kaon is $(1.60 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.19)\%$. For the exclusive decays, $B(\tau \to K^-) = (0.66 \pm 0.07 \pm 0.09)\%$, $B(\tau \to K^- \pi^0) = (0.51 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.07)\%$, and, based on three events, $B(\tau \to K^- \pi^0 \pi^0) < 0.3\%$ at the 90\% confidence level. Abstract: The branching fractions for the five-charged-particle decays of the [tau] lepton have been measured in [ital e][sup +][ital e][sup [minus]] annihilations using the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. Assuming all charged particles to be pions, the results are [ital B](3[pi][sup [minus]]2[pi][sup +][ge]0 neutrals [nu][sub [tau]])=(0.097[plus minus]0.005[plus minus]0.011)%, [ital B](3[pi][sup [minus]]2[pi][sup +][nu][sub [tau]])=(0.077[plus minus]0.005 [plus minus]0.009)%, [ital B](3[pi][sup [minus]]2[pi][sup +][pi][sup 0][nu][sub [tau]])=(0.019[plus minus]0.004[plus minus]0.004)%, and [ital B](3[pi][sup [minus]]2[pi][sup +]2[pi][sup 0][nu][sub [tau]])[lt]0.011% at the 90% C.L. [ital B](3[pi][sup [minus]]2[pi][sup [minus]][pi][sup 0][nu][sub [tau]]) is measured for the first time by exclusive [pi][sup 0] reconstruction. The results are compared with the predictions from the partially conserved-axial-current and conserved-vector-current hypotheses assuming isospin invariance.

Abstract: We have measured the vector-pseudoscalar mass splitting M(D s * + )-M(D s + )=144.22±0.47±0.37 MeV significantly more precisely than the previous world average. We minimize the systematic errors by also measuring the vector-pseudoscalar mass difference M(D* 0 )-M(D 0 ) using the radiative decay D* 0 →D 0 γ, obtaining [M(D s * + )-M(D s + )]-[M(D* 0 )-M(D 0 )] =2.09±0.47±0.37 MeV. This is then combined with our previous high-precision measurement of M(D* 0 )-M(D 0 ), which used the decay D* 0 →D 0 π 0 . We also measure the mass difference M(D s + )-M(D + )=99.5±0.6±0.3 MeV, using the φπ + decay modes of the D s + and D + mesons.

Abstract: Using data from the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we measure [ital scrB]([tau][sup [minus]][r arrow][ital h][sup [minus]][pi][sup 0][nu][sub [tau]]) where [ital h][sup [minus]] refers to either [pi][sup [minus]] or [ital K][sup [minus]]. We use three different methods to measure this branching fraction. The combined result is [ital scrB]([tau][sup [minus]][r arrow][ital h][sup [minus]][pi][sup 0][nu][sub [tau]])=0.2587[plus minus]0.0012[plus minus]0.0042, in good agreement with standard model predictions.

Abstract: We present a measurement of [Gamma]([ital D][sub [ital s]][sup +][r arrow][mu][sup +][nu])/[Gamma]([ital D][sub [ital s]][sup +][r arrow][phi][pi][sup +])= 0.245[plus minus]0.052[plus minus]0.074. Using this ratio and [ital scrB]([ital D][sub [ital s]][sup +][r arrow][phi][pi][sup +])=(3.7[plus minus]0.9)% we extract [ital f][sub [ital D][ital s]]=344[plus minus]37[plus minus]52[plus minus]42 MeV, where the last error is due to the uncertainty in the [ital D][sub [ital s]][sup +][r arrow][phi][pi][sup +] absolute branching ratio. This result is larger than most theoretical predictions.

Our recent measurement of [ital scrB]([ital D][sup 0][r arrow][ital K][sup [minus]][pi][sup +]) then gives [ital scrB]([ital D][sup +][r arrow][ital K][sup [minus]][pi][sup +][pi][sup +])=(9.3[plus minus]0.6[plus minus]0.8)%.

Abstract: We have observed the previously unseen decay modes Λπ+π0, Σ0π+π0 and Σ0π−π+π+ of the charmed baryon Λc+, as well as Λc+→Σ0π+ observed previously by ARGUS. The branching ratios for these four decay modes relative to Λc+→pK−π+ are measured to be 0.73 ±0.09± 0.16, 0.36 ±0.09±0.10, 0.21±0.05±0.05, and 0.21±0.02 ±0.04, respectively. Using the recent CLEO measurement of the branching ratio for Λc+→pK− π+, these modes account for 6% of Λc+ decays.

Abstract: Using the CLEO II data sample, with an integrated luminosity of 1.8 fb[sup [minus]1] at and near the [Upsilon](4[ital S]) resonance, we have observed a signal for [ital D][sup 0][r arrow][ital K][sup +][pi][sup [minus]], which could be due to either [ital D][sup 0][ital [bar D]][sup 0] mixing or doubly Cabibbo suppressed decay, or a combination of the two. We find [ital scrB]([ital D][sup 0][r arrow][ital K][sup +][pi][sup [minus]])/[ital scrB]([ital D][sup 0][r arrow][ital K][sup [minus]][pi][sup +])=0.0077[plus minus]0 .0025(stat) [plus minus]0.0025(syst).

Abstract: Using the CLEO II detector at CESR, we have measured the ratio of branching fractions B (D + S → φl + ν) B (D + S → φπ + ) = 0.54 ± 0.05 ± 0.04 . We use this measurement to obtain a model dependent estimate of B (D + S → φπ + ) .

Abstract: Using the CLEO II detector at CESR we observe 500 Λ l + pairs consistent with the semileptonic decay Λc+ → λ+ν We measure σ(e + e − → Λ + c X) · B(Λ + c → Λ l + ν l ) = 4.77±0.25±0.66 pb . Combining with the charm semileptonic width and the lifetime of the Λc we also obtain B(Λ+c → pK−π+). We find no evidence for Λ l + ν l final states in which there are additional Λ+c decay products. We measure the decay asymmetry parameter of Λ+c → Λe+νe to be αΛc = −0.89+0.17+0.09−0.11−0.05.

Abstract: Using the CLEO II detector, we have measured the branching fractions for [Upsilon](3[ital S])[r arrow][pi][pi][Upsilon](1[ital S]), [Upsilon](3[ital S])[r arrow][pi][pi][Upsilon](2[ital S]), and the cascade [Upsilon](3[ital S])[r arrow][Upsilon](2[ital S])+[ital X], [Upsilon](2[ital S])[r arrow][pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]][Upsilon](1[ital S]), analyzing the exclusive mode where the daughter [Upsilon] state decays to a [ital e][sup +][ital e[minus]] or [mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]] pair, as well as the inclusive [pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]] transitions where the final [Upsilon] state decays into hadrons. Properties of the [pi][pi] system are analyzed. Searches for the cascade decay [Upsilon](3[ital S])[r arrow][pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]][ital h][sub [ital b]], [ital h][sub [ital b]][r arrow][gamma][eta][sub [ital b]] and [Upsilon](3[ital S])[r arrow][pi][sup 0][ital h][sub [ital b]] were also performed.

Abstract: Using the CLEO II detector and a sample of 955 000 [Upsilon](4S) decays we have confirmed charmless semileptonic decays of [ital B] mesons. In the momentum interval 2.3--2.6 GeV/[ital c] we observe an excess of 107[plus minus]15[plus minus]11 leptons, which we attribute to [ital b][r arrow][ital ul][nu]. This result yields a model-dependent range of values for [vert bar][ital V][sub [ital u][ital b]]/[ital V][sub [ital c][ital b]][vert bar] that is lower than has been obtained in previous studies. For the inclusive spectator model of Altarelli [ital et] [ital al]. we find [vert bar][ital V][sub [ital u][ital b]]/[ital V][sub [ital c][ital b]][vert bar]=0.076[plus minus]0.008. Models that describe [ital b][r arrow][ital ul][nu] with a limited set of exclusive final states give [vert bar][ital V][sub [ital u][ital b]]/[ital V][sub [ital c][ital b]][vert bar]=0.06[minus]0.10.

Abstract: We report results from a search for the decays ${\mathit{B}}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$, ${\mathit{B}}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{K}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$, and ${\mathit{B}}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{K}}^{+}$${\mathit{K}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$. We find 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions, ${\mathit{B}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}$2.9\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}5}$, ${\mathit{B}}_{\mathit{K}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}$2.6\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}5}$, and ${\mathit{B}}_{\mathit{K}\mathit{K}}$0.7\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}5}$. While there is no statistically significant signal in the individual modes, the sum of ${\mathit{B}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}$ and ${\mathit{B}}_{\mathit{K}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}$ exceeds zero with a significance of more than 4 standard deviations, indicating that we have observed charmless hadronic B decays.

Abstract: Using 1.16 × 106 B B events collected at the γ(4S) resonance by the CLEO Collaboration at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR), we have searched for decays of B mesons to exclusive two-body hadronic final states including a Ds+ or a D s ∗+ meson. We obtain the 90% confidence level upper limit β (B → D s (∗)+ π − + D s ∗ +p − + D s (∗)+ π 0 + D s (∗)+ η + D s (∗)+ p 0 + D s (∗)+ (ω) × β(D s + → φπ + ) −5 . We have also searched for the W-exchange decays, B 0 → D s (∗)− K (∗)+ .

Abstract: We observe the [Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup +] baryon decaying to [Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +][pi][sup 0] and measure the mass difference [ital M]([Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup +])[minus][ital M]([Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +]) to be 168.5[plus minus]0.2 MeV/[ital c][sup 2]. We also measure the mass differences [ital M]([Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup ++])[minus][ital M]([Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +]) and [ital M]([Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup 0])[minus][ital M]([Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +]) with improved precision and determine the isospin mass splittings [ital M]([Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup ++])[minus][ital M]([Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup 0]) and [ital M]([Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup +])[minus][ital M]([Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup 0]) to be 1.1[plus minus]0.4[plus minus]0.1 MeV/[ital c][sup 2] and 1.4[plus minus]0.5[plus minus]0.3 MeV/[ital c][sup 2], respectively. Our results indicate that the light quark mass difference does not dominate the isospin mass splitting in [Sigma][sub [ital c]].

Abstract: We have measured branching ratios for three [Lambda][sub [ital c]] decay modes that have a [Sigma][sup +] in the final state. Two of the observed decay modes, [Lambda][sub [ital c]][r arrow][Sigma][sup +][pi][sup 0] and [Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +][r arrow][Sigma][sup +][omega], have no external [ital W]-emission amplitudes. Their branching ratios relative to the [ital pK][sup [minus]][pi][sup +] mode are 0.20[plus minus]0.03[plus minus]0.03 and 0.54[plus minus]0.13[plus minus]0.06, respectively. We have also significantly improved the measurement of the branching ratio for the previously observed decay mode [Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +][r arrow][Sigma][sup +][pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]]. We find its branching ratio relative to [ital pK][sup [minus]][pi][sup +] to be 0.74[plus minus]0.07[plus minus]0.09.

Abstract: Using 1.79 ${\mathrm{fb}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ of data recorded by the CLEO II detector we have measured the absolute branching fraction for ${\mathit{D}}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{K}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$. The angular correlation between the ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$ emitted in the decay ${\mathit{D}}^{\mathrm{*}+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{D}}^{0}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$, and the jet direction in ${\mathit{e}}^{+}$${\mathit{e}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}cc\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} events, is used to determine the total number of inclusive ${\mathit{D}}^{0}$ mesons produced from this source. The subsequent reconstruction of the decay chain ${\mathit{D}}^{\mathrm{*}+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{D}}^{0}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$,${\mathit{D}}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{K}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$ allows a measurement of the absolute ${\mathit{D}}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{K}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$ branching fraction. Correcting for decay radiation in the final state, we find scrB(${\mathit{D}}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{K}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$)=[3.95\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.08(stat)\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.17(syst)]%.

Abstract: Using a sample of integrated luminosity 1.68 fb−1 collected with the CLEO-II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we measure the branching ratios for the dominant exclusive semileptonic decays D → K l ν and D → K ∗ l ν , using charged and neutral D mesons. We also make a precise measurement of the vector form factor for the decay D 0 → K − l + ν , using a sample of 2700 events.

Abstract: Using the CLEO II detector at CESR we have studied [ital D][sup 0] decays into final states with a [ital [bar K]] [sup 0] or [ital [bar K]] [sup *0], and have measured branching ratios for the decay modes [ital D][sup 0][r arrow]([ital [bar K]] [sup 0]/[ital [bar K]] [sup *0])[pi][sup 0],[eta],[eta][prime]. These results are compared with predictions of various charm decay models, and contributions of final-state interactions are discussed.

Abstract: We report the measurement of new modes of the charmed baryon ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$ using data recorded by the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. We find branching ratios, relative to ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{pK}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$, of 0.070\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.011\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.011 for ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}}^{+}$${\mathit{K}}^{+}$${\mathit{K}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$, 0.069\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.023\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.016 for ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\Sigma}\ensuremath{\varphi}, 0.078\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.013\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.013 for ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Xi}}}^{0}$${\mathit{K}}^{+}$, and 0.053\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.016\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.010 for ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Xi}}}^{\mathrm{*}0}$${\mathit{K}}^{+}$. These measurements indicate that W-exchange diagrams contribute to ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$ decay. We have also made a new measurement of the previously found mode ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Xi}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$${\mathit{K}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$.

Abstract: Using data from CLEO II at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring we provide a new measurement of the branching fraction for [ital D][sup 0][r arrow][pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]], and we present the first measurements of [ital D][sup 0][r arrow][pi][sup 0][pi][sup 0] and of [ital D][sup +][r arrow][pi][sup +][pi][sup 0], which is due to an isospin changing [Delta][ital I]=3/2 transition. From these data we extract the ratio of isospin amplitudes [vert bar][ital A][sub 2]/[ital A][sub 0][vert bar], and the cosine of the relative phase [delta]=[delta][sub 2][minus][delta][sub 0] between these amplitudes, for [ital D][r arrow][pi][pi] decays. Unlike the situation in kaon decay where [ital A][sub 2] is strongly suppressed, we find [vert bar][ital A][sub 2]/[ital A][sub 0][vert bar]=0.72[plus minus]0.13[plus minus]0.11 and cos[delta]=0.14[plus minus]0.13[plus minus]0.09.

Abstract: The decay [tau][sup [minus]][r arrow][pi][sup [minus]][pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]]2[pi][sup 0][nu][sub [tau]] has been observed in [ital e][sup +][ital e[minus]] annihilation using the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. In a data sample collected at [radical][ital s] [similar to]10.6 GeV, 668[plus minus]38 decay candidates have been identified by exclusively reconstructing two [pi][sup 0]'s accompanying three charged particles, which are assumed to be pions. Normalizing to the number of [tau] pairs detected with one charged particle recoiling against three charged particles, this yields a branching ratio of [ital B][sub 3[pi]2[pi]][sup 0]=(0.48[plus minus]0.04[plus minus]0.04)%. A signal of 430[plus minus]33 events for the decay [tau][sup [minus]][r arrow][pi][sup [minus]][omega][pi][sup 0][nu][sub [tau]] has also been observed, corresponding to a branching ratio of [ital B][sub [pi][omega][pi]][sup 0]=(0.39[plus minus]0.04[plus minus]0.04)%.

Abstract: We have measured the [ital B][sup 0][ital [bar B]0] mixing probability, [chi][sub [ital d]], using a sample of 965 000 [ital B[bar B]] pairs from [Upsilon](4[ital S]) decays. Counting dilepton events, we find [chi][sub [ital d]]=0.157[plus minus]0.016[plus minus]0.018[sub [minus]0.021][sup +0.028]. Using tagged [ital B][sup 0] events, we find [chi][sub [ital d]]=0.149[plus minus]0.023[plus minus]0.019[plus minus]0.010. The first (second) error is statistical (systematic). The third error reflects a [plus minus]15% uncertainty in the assumption, made in both cases, that charged and neutral [ital B] pairs contribute equally to dilepton events. We also obtain a limit on the [ital CP] impurity in the [ital B][sub [ital d]][sup 0] system, [vert bar]Re([epsilon][sub [ital B]][sup 0])[vert bar][lt]0.045 at 90% C.L.

Abstract: We have observed the decays [ital B][sup 0][r arrow][ital K][sup *](892)[sup 0][gamma] and [ital B][sup [minus]][r arrow][ital K][sup *](892)[sup [minus]][gamma], which are evidence for the quark-level process [ital b][r arrow][ital s][gamma]. The average branching fraction is (4.5[plus minus]1.5[plus minus]0.9)[times]10[sup [minus]5]. This value is consistent with standard model predictions from electromagnetic penguin diagrams.
