Abstract

An IR photodetector including an IR semiconductor detector with conductive layers on opposite, parallel surfaces. A semiconductor substrate supports the semiconductor IR detector. A circuit is connected across the semiconductor IR detector to provide a bias voltage and for measuring current flow through the semiconductor IR detector. The semiconductor IR detector has a lattice structure made up of a series of potential wells separated by relatively wide potential barriers such that each well has two confined energy levels. A thin spike barrier is placed in the center of alternate potential wells to tailor the absorption characteristics of the semiconductor IR detector. Multicolor operation is achieved by selecting the appropriate well widths for a first group of potential wells and by placing thin spike barriers in a second group of potential wells that are alternately placed between the wells of the first group.

An account is given of the experimental determination of the longitudinal chromatic aberration and secondary spectrum of telescope object glasses, using the Hilger lens testing interferometer. The amount of mirror displacement necessary to give the same interference pattern for different wave-lengths of light is measured by a screw micrometer.

Abstract

It has been frequently suggested that it should be possible to analyse mathematically the interferometer pattern produced by a lens, in order to obtain a measure of the aberrations from the coefficients of the terms in the various orders of x and y. x and y are here the coordinates of a point on the interferogram, whose optical path difference relative to the central ray of the lens is known at once by counting the fringes. This method has now been tried several times, using the utmost experimental precautions to secure accuracy, but the figures do not agree very closely with those obtained for the same lens under identical conditions by the oblique Hartmann test. Possible reasons for this disagreement are suggested.

Abstract

According to the ordinary methods of performing the Hartmann test, the assumption is made that all the rays cross the optical axis. As a matter of fact, this is very far from the truth, especially in the case of the large astronomical objectives and mirrors to which the Hartmann test is most generally applied. In the present paper a brief description is given of a modified test in which each "ray" is treated on its own merits and its absolute deviation from the ideal path is determined in both magnitude and direction. This method incidentally leads at once to the well-known criterion "T" of Hartmann, which is now generally adopted in the comparison of large telescopes.

Abstract

A special telescope is described, in which the chromatic aberration can be varied continuously by means of a zero-power lens sliding within the telescope tube, the conditions being such that this movement does not introduce any other undesirable aberrations. This apparatus has been constructed, and by its aid many determinations have been made as to the best type of achromatism for visual observations, in daylight, in artificial light, and on astronomical objects. Several observers were employed to make settings, and their opinions as to the most desirable type of achromatism are tabulated and compared. In general it is found that a moderate amount of undercorrection is needed to give a truly colour-free image, that less undercorrection is required if the best definition is to be obtained, and that a slight overcorrection is desirable for astronomical work.

In order to obtain a rapid estimate of the quality of a lens by observing its behaviour in the interferometer, it is necessary for the observer to be familiar with the characteristic patterns of the various primary aberrations under various conditions of adjustment. A method is described by which these patterns can be easily calculated for any required case; and series of typical patterns are shown together with actual interferograms for comparison.

Abstract

By performing a Hartmann test on an oblique pencil of light through a lens it is possible to determine the coma and astigmatism with great simplicity and accuracy. The theory of the test has been recently investigated by Prof. A. E. Conrady, and an outline of his proof of the formulae involved is given, together with the complete numerical results of such a test applied to a small inclined telescope objective. The measures of coma and astigmatism obtained for this lens have a probable error of the order of 1 per cent.

Abstract

A new type of nephelometer is described, which provides an accurate optical method of measuring a minute amount of precipitate by means of the turbidity it produces in solution. Light is passed into the end of a tube containing the solution, and the intensity of the scattered light is measured by a special form of wedge photometer. A description is given of the means by which stray light can be kept from the eye during observations, and an actual example is included to illustrate the use of the instrument.
