Abstract

Fermilab high-energy photoproduction experiment E687 provides a high statistics sample of the decay mode D + → K ∗0 μ + ν (charge conjugates are implied). Our analysis yields a branching ratio of Γ (D + → K ∗0 μ + ν) Γ (D + → K − π + π + ) = 0.56±0.04±0.06 . The ratios of the form factors governing the decay are measured to be R ν = 1.74 ±0.27±0.28 and R 2 = 0.78±0.18±0.10, implying a polarization of Γ l Γ t = 1.20±0.13 ±0.13 for the electron decay. Finally, we report new limits on the decay modes D + → K − π + μ + ν (nonresonent) and D + → K ∗0 π 0 μ + ν .

Abstract

Measurements of elastic photoproduction cross sections for the J / ψ meson from 100 GeV to 375 GeV are presented. The results indicate that the cross section increases slowly in this range. The shape of the energy dependence agrees well with the photon-gluon fusion model prediction.

Abstract

We report a measurement of the semimuonic decay D0→K−μ+ν from data taken during the 1987–1988 fixed target run at Fermilab by the E687 Collaboration. We obtain Γ(D0→K−μ+ν)/Γ(D0→K−π+)=0.82±0.13±0.13 and use this result to calculate Γ(D 0 →K ∗− μ + ν)/Γ(D 0 →K − μ + ν)=0.59±0.10±0.13 .

Abstract

Trackers based on scintillating-fiber technology are being considered by the Solenoidal Detector Collaboration at SSC and the DO collaboration at Fermilab. Some 600 fibers in the Fermilab Tevatron CO area were irradiated, thereby obtaining a hadronic irradiation at realistic rates. Four-meter-long samples of ten Bicron polystyrene-based fibre types, maintained in air, dry nitrogen, argon, and vacuum atmospheres within stainless-steel tubes, were irradiated for seven weeks at various distances from the accelerator beam pipes. Maximum doses, measured by thermoluminescence detectors, were about 80 krad. Fiber properties, particularly light yield and attenuation length, were measured over a one-year period. A description of the work together with the results is presented. At the doses achieved, corresponding to a few years of actual fiber-tracking detector operation, little degradation was observed. Recovery after several days' exposure to air was noted. Properties of unirradiated samples kept in darkness show no changes after one year. >

Abstract

The magnetic spectrometer and charged particle tracking system used in Fermilab experiment 687 to study the photoproduction and decay of charm particles are described in detail. The photons are produced by a wideband electron beam which can operate at energies up to 600 GeV/ c . The spectrometer consists of a high resolution silicon microstrip detector, a large aperture dipole magnet, proportional chambers, a second large aperture dipole, and more proportional chambers. Three multi-cell threshold Cherenkov counters provide charged particle identification. The tracking system is capable of resolving the secondary decay vertices of charm and beauty mesons and baryons from the primary interaction vertex. It also determines the invariant mass of the multibody final states of particles containing heavy quarks with excellent resolution. The particle identification system allows one to identify kaons and protons present in these final states clearly. This collection of detectors produces very clean signals for charm particles and permits one to make many cross checks of the apparatus. The performance is illustrated for a variety of charm signals. Of particular interest is a description of the tracking through the silicon microstrip detector and its use in isolating downstream decay vertices. Two complementary approaches to the reconstruction of secondary decay vertices are presented and insight is gained by comparing their strengths and weaknesses.

Abstract

Analysis of the resonant and non-resonant branching fractions for the decays D 0 →K S 0 π + π − and D 0 →K S 0 K + K − is presented. For the D 0 →K S 0 π + π − decay, a fit to the observed Dalitz plot was performed to determine the complex amplitudes of the sub-component modes. For the D 0 →K S 0 K + K − decay, measurements of the branching ratios D 0 →K S 0 K + K − (inclusive), D 0 →K S 0 φ , and D 0 →K S 0 (K + K − ) non- φ relative to the D 0 →K S 0 π + π − mode are reported. The data were collected by the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687.

Abstract

We present measurements of the branching ratios for two Cabibbo suppressed decays of the D0 meson, D0 → π+π+π−π− and D0 → K−K+, and for the decay D + s → фπ + π + π − . The physics signals were extracted from a data sample consisting of 60 million triggers, collected by Fermilab Photoproduction Experiment E687 from December 1987 to February 1988. The relative branching ratios are measured to be: Γ(D0 → 4π)/Γ(D0 → K3π) = 0.108±0.024±0.008, Γ(D0 → KK)/Γ(D0 → Kπ) = 0.138±0.027 ±0.010 and Γ( D s → ф3π)/Γ( D s → фπ) = 0.58±0.20±0.10 .

Abstract

A test facility to study the light-transmission properties of scintillating fiber waveguides for tracking applications in high-energy physics is being developed. A light-tight box 2 m in length has been built, and data acquisition hardware and software is in place for testing various aspects of scintillating fibers and waveguides. Scintillating fibers have been excited with radioactive sources, ultraviolet light sources, and light-emitting diodes. Various photodetectors such as photomultiplier tubes, photodiodes, charge-coupled devices and solid-state photomultipliers have been utilized to detect the transmitted light. Studies of attenuation length and transmission through splices are presented. >

Abstract

Measurements of the lifetimes of the Λ+c decaying into pK−π+ and of the D+s decaying into φπ+ are presented. The data were accumulated in the Fermilab Wide-Band photoproduction experiment E687. The lifetimes of the Λ+c and the D+s are measured to be (0.20±0.03±3)× 10−12s and (0.50±0.06±0.03) × 10−12s respectively.

Abstract

Scintillating fiber tracking detectors are being developed for the SDC experiment at Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) and the upgrade of the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The many attractive features of a fiber tracker include good position resolution, low occupancy, low mass in the active volume, and excellent resistance to radiation damage. An additional important feature, especially at the SSC, is the intrinsically prompt response time of a scintillating fiber. The photodetector of choice is the visible light phonon counter (VLPC), a device which combines high rate capability with high quantum efficiency at visible wavelengths. To realize the high rate capability of the VLPC requires the implementation of a suitable, fast preamplifier. Until recently, studies of fibers and VLPCs with radioactive sources and cosmic rays have been performed under low rate conditions using transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs). The authors report on the response characteristics of a fiber-VLPC system coupled to a variety of fast preamplifiers, including QPA02, VTX, and TVC devices. Their performance is compared with that of a transimpedance amplifier. >

A fiber-optic plate imaging system has been developed for active target and tracking applications, in which the active element is Ce(3+) in a silicate glass. Particle tracks and interactions have been recorded with a hit density of ? 4/mm for minimum ionizing particles and with a spatial resolution ? ~ 28? m.

Abstract

A monitor and control system has been designed, constructed, and tested for the purpose of controlling all aspects of a scintillating fiber active target system used in high-energy physics experimentation. The system requires control of high voltages, gating, a trigger counters, and monitoring. It resides in a radioactive area with very limited access. The control system uses a microcomputer and two specialized Z80-based processors, with their associated circuitry. The design and performance of the hardware and software, all of which is custom built, is discussed. >

Abstract

We have been developing a scintillating glass fiber-optic imaging system for active target and tracking applications in high energy physics experiments, Extensive measurements have been performed on several scintillating-glass compositions, one of which is a silicate-glass containing 0. 6 mole % of Ce2O3 known commercially as NRL glass. For this material, fabricated into coherent fiber-optic plates of 10 ?m and 25 ?m diameter cladded-glass fibers, we have observed: (1) clear particle tracks and interactions; and (2) a yield of ~ 2 photoelectrons per millimeter of path length for minimum ionizing particles, Additionally, for the bulk NRL glass formed in disks of 1" diameter and 4 mm thickness, we have observed a ~80% retention of optical transmission through 4 mm of material at 395 nm (the peak of the fluorescence spectrum) for a radiation dose in excess of 107 rads acquired over several days. Results of these tests and others suggest that Ce2O3 based scintillating glasses constitute very promising materials for the fabrication of high resolution tracking detectors for fixed target and colliding beam applications.

A description is given of a high-resolution, gateable scintillating fiber target that has been developed for Fermilab Experiment E687 to study charm and beauty particle production and decay in high-energy photon interactions. The detector consists of a scintillating target of either GS1 cerium glass fibers or polystyrene fibers of 29- mu m cross section, a multistage image intensifier, and an intensified CCD or SIT/VIDICON camera system used in conjunction with a custom-built video data acquisition system. >

Abstract

A new family of scintillating glasses has been developed which is based upon Pr3+ oxide in a silicate host. The materials have fast response (30nsec ? ? ? several ?sec) and good optical transmission. Materials of this kind might find applicability as fiber-optic detectors for high energy physics experiments operating at moderate interaction rates.

Abstract

A scintillating glass has been developed containing cerium (3+) oxide in an aluminate host glass. In this material the scintillation emission spectrum is red-shifted relative to that observed for Ce/sup 3+/ in silicate glasses. Emission and absorption spectra are more widely separated in the aluminate composition, suggesting that which glasses might have improved light-transmission properties. The refractive index is high, making it a potentially interesting material for use in fiber-optic tracking detectors. >
