We performed resistance measurements on [Formula: see text]Cu

We present a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the substitution dependence of the electronic structure of Rb_{0.8}Fe_{2}(Se_{1-z}S_{z})_{2} (z=0, 0.5, 1), where superconductivity is continuously suppressed into a metallic phase. Going from the nonsuperconducting Rb_{0.8}Fe_{2}S_{2} to superconducting Rb_{0.8}Fe_{2}Se_{2}, we observe little change of the Fermi surface topology, but a reduction of the overall bandwidth by a factor of 2. Hence, for these heavily electron-doped iron chalcogenides, we have identified electron correlation as explicitly manifested in the quasiparticle bandwidth to be the important tuning parameter for superconductivity, and that moderate correlation is essential to achieving high T_{C}.

We use neutron scattering to study the spin excitations associated with the stripe antiferromagnetic order in semiconducting K(0.85)Fe(1.54)Se(2) (T(N) = 280 K). We show that the spin-wave spectra can be accurately described by an effective Heisenberg Hamiltonian with highly anisotropic inplane couplings at T = 5 K. At high temperature (T = 300 K) above T(N), short-range magnetic correlation with anisotropic correlation lengths are observed. Our results suggest that, despite the dramatic difference in the Fermi surface topology, the inplane anisotropic magnetic couplings are a fundamental property of the iron-based compounds; this implies that their antiferromagnetism may originate from local strong correlation effects rather than weak coupling Fermi surface nesting.

The recently discovered K-Fe-Se high-temperature superconductor has caused heated debate regarding the nature of its parent compound. Transport, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and STM measurements have suggested that its parent compound could be insulating, semiconducting, or even metallic [M. H. Fang, H.-D. Wang, C.-H. Dong, Z.-J. Li, C.-M. Feng, J. Chen, and H. Q. Yuan, Europhys. Lett. 94, 27009 (2011); F. Chen et al., Phys. Rev. X 1, 021020 (2011); and W. Li et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 057003 (2012)]. Because the magnetic ground states associated with these different phases have not yet been identified and the relationship between magnetism and superconductivity is not fully understood, the real parent compound of this system remains elusive. Here, we report neutron-diffraction experiments that reveal a semiconducting antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase with rhombus iron vacancy order. The magnetic order of the semiconducting phase is the same as the stripe AFM order of the iron pnictide parent compounds. Moreover, while the sqrt[5]×sqrt[5] block AFM phase coexists with superconductivity, the stripe AFM order is suppressed by it. This leads us to conjecture that the new semiconducting magnetic ordered phase is the true parent phase of this superconductor.

Spin excitations are one of the top candidates for mediating electron pairing in unconventional superconductors. Their coupling to superconductivity is evident in a large number of systems, by the observation of an abrupt redistribution of magnetic spectral weight at the superconducting transition temperature, T(c), for energies comparable to the superconducting gap. Here we report inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Fe-based superconductors, Fe(1+y-x)(Ni/Cu)(x)Te(0.5)Se(0.5) that emphasize an additional signature. The overall shape of the low energy magnetic dispersion changes from two incommensurate vertical columns at T≫T(c) to a distinctly different U-shaped dispersion at low temperature. Importantly, this spectral reconstruction is apparent for temperatures up to ~3T(c). If the magnetic excitations are involved in the pairing mechanism, their surprising modification on the approach to T(c) demonstrates that strong interactions are involved.

Magnetic correlations in isovalently doped Ba(Fe(1-x)Ru(x))(2)As(2) (x = 0.25, T(c) = 14.5 K; x = 0.35, T(c) = 20 K) are studied by elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques. A relatively large superconducting spin gap accompanied by a weak resonance mode is observed in the superconducting state in both samples. In the normal state, the magnetic excitation intensity is dramatically reduced with increasing Ru doping toward the optimally doped regime. Our results favor that the weakening of the electron-electron correlations by Ru doping is responsible for the dampening of the resonance mode, as well as the suppression of the normal state antiferromagnetic correlations near the optimally doped regime in this system.

High-resolution x-ray scattering studies of the nonpolar thermotropic liquid crystal 4-n-pentylphenylthiol-4'-n-octyloxybenzoate (8S5) in aerosil gel nanonetworks reveal that the aerosil-induced disorder significantly alters both the nematic to smectic-A and smectic-A to smectic-C phase transitions. The limiting 8S5 smectic-A correlation length follows a power-law dependence on the aerosil density in quantitative agreement with the limiting lengths measured previously in other smectic-A liquid crystal gels. The smectic-A to smectic-C liquid crystalline phase transition is altered fundamentally by the presence of the aerosil gel. The onset of the smectic-C phase remains relatively sharp but there is an extended coexistence region where smectic-A and smectic-C domains can exist.

Utilizing resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, we report a previously unobserved mode in the excitation spectrum of La2-xSrxCuO4 and Nd2CuO4 at 500 meV. The mode is peaked around the (pi, 0) point in reciprocal space and is observed to soften, and broaden, away from this point. Samples with x=0, 0.01, 0.05, and 0.17 were studied. The new mode is found to be rapidly suppressed with increasing Sr content and is absent at x=0.17, where it is replaced by a continuum of excitations. This mode is only observed when the incident x-ray polarization is normal to the CuO planes.

Magnetic excitations for energies up to approximately 100 meV are studied for overdoped La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) with x=0.25 and 0.30, using time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy. Comparison of spectra integrated over the width of an antiferromagnetic Brillouin zone demonstrates that the magnetic scattering at intermediate energies, 20or= omegaor= 100 meV, progressively decreases with overdoping. This strongly suggests that the magnetism is not related to Fermi surface nesting, but rather is associated with a decreasing volume fraction of (probably fluctuating) antiferromagnetic bubbles.

A high-resolution calorimetric study has been carried out on nanocolloidal dispersions of aerosils in the liquid crystal 4-n-pentylphenylthiol-4'-n-octyloxybenzoate (8S5) as a function of aerosil concentration and temperature spanning the smectic-C to nematic phases. Over this temperature range, this liquid crystal possesses two continuous XY phase transitions: a fluctuation-dominated nematic to smectic-A transition with alpha approximately alphaXY=-0.013 and a mean-field smectic-A to smectic-C transition. The effective critical character of the N-SmA transition remains unchanged over the entire range of the introduced quenched random disorder while the peak height and enthalpy can be well described by considering a cutoff length scale to the quasicritical fluctuations. The robust nature of the N-SmA transition in this system contrasts with cyanobiphenyl-aerosil systems and may be due to the mesogens being nonpolar and having a long nematic range. The character of the SmA-SmC transition changes gradually with increasing disorder but remains mean field like. The heat capacity maximum at the SmA-SmC transition scales as rho with an apparent evolution from tricritical to a simple mean-field step behavior. These results may be generally understood as a stiffening of the liquid crystal (both the nematic elasticity as well as the smectic layer compression modulus B) with silica density.

The effects of dispersed aerosil nanoparticles on two of the phase transitions of the thermotropic liquid-crystal material 4-n-pentylphenylthiol-4(')-n-octyloxybenzoate (8;S5) have been studied using high-resolution x-ray diffraction techniques. The aerosils hydrogen bond together to form a gel which imposes a weak quenched disorder on the liquid crystal. The smectic-A fluctuations are well characterized by a two-component line shape representing thermal and random-field contributions. An elaboration on this line shape is required to describe the fluctuations in the smectic-C phase; specifically the effect of the tilt on the wave-vector dependence of the thermal fluctuations must be explicitly taken into account. Both the magnitude and the temperature dependence of the smectic-C tilt order parameter are observed to be unaffected by the disorder. This may be a consequence of the large bare smectic correlation length in the direction of modulation for this transition. These results show that the understanding developed for the nematic to smectic-A transition for octylcyanobiphenyl and octyloxycyanobiphenyl liquid crystals with quenched disorder can be extended to quite different materials and transitions.

We report a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of the dispersion relations of charge-transfer excitations in insulating La(2)CuO(4).. These data reveal two peaks, both of which show two-dimensional characteristics. The lowest energy excitation has a gap energy of approximately 2.2 eV at the zone enter, and a dispersion of approximately 1 eV. The spectral weight of this mode becomes dramatically smaller around (pi, pi). The second peak shows a smaller dispersion ( approximately 0.5 eV) with a zone-center energy of approximately 3.9 eV. We argue that these are both highly dispersive exciton modes damped by the presence of the electron-hole continuum.

We report a neutron scattering study of the long-wavelength dynamic spin correlations in the model two-dimensional S = 1/2 square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnets Sr2CuO2Cl2 and Sr2Cu3O4Cl2. The characteristic energy scale, omega(0)(T/J), is determined by measuring the quasielastic peak width in the paramagnetic phase over a wide range of temperature ( 0.2 less similarT/J less similar0.7). The obtained values for omega(0)(T/J) agree quantitatively between the two compounds and also with values deduced from quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The combined data show scaling behavior, omega approximately xi(-z), over the entire temperature range with z = 1.0(1), in agreement with dynamic scaling theory.

We review the results of recent neutron-scattering studies of the spin fluctuations in samples of La 1.89 Sr 0.11 CuO 4 which are ∼80% superconducting with T c = 10 K. The structure factor, S(Q), reflects three-dimensional modulated spin correlations with an in-plane correlation length of order 18 ± 6 A. The fluctuations evolve with temperature from being predominantly dynamic at high temperatures to mainly quasi-elastic (|ΔE| < 0.5 meV) at low temperatures. No significant differences are observed in the normal and superconducting states.

We report high-resolution inelastic-neutron-scattering studies of the spin dynamics in the diluted near-Heisenberg antiferromagnet Mn/sub x/Zn/sub 1-//sub x/F/sub 2/ with x = 0.75 and 0.50. The x = 0.75 experiments reproduce previous results by Coombs et al. (J. Phys. C 9, 2167 (1976)), albeit with much higher resolution. In that case the excitations may be described as spin waves which broaden progressively as the wave vector approaches the zone-boundary value q/sub ZB/. However, even at q/sub ZB/ the excitation is underdamped. More interesting behavior is observed in the x = 0.50 sample. At long wavelengths, the response function S(q,..omega..) is dominated by a sharp spin-wave peak; however, there is a weak ..omega../sup -3/ tail extending to high energies. With increasing wave vector the sharp peak diminishes in intensity while a broad overdamped component, which is well described by a damped-harmonic-oscillator (DHO) function, grows in intensity. The crossover from a dominant spin wave to a dominant DHO response occurs for qapprox.0.3q/sub ZB/. In energy space, this phenomenon manifests itself as a crossover from propagating low-energy spin waves to localized high-energy excitations. An independent measurement of elastic diffuse magnetic scattering from the x = 0.50 sample yields the percolation correlation length xi/submore » p/ associated with the dilution as xi/sub p//sup -1/ = 0.3q/sub ZB/. This demonstrates that the crossover in the dynamics occurs at the length scale characteristic of the static geometrical disorder. The results are thence related to the magnon-fracton crossover predicted by recent theories for percolation networks.« less

In Rb2Mn5Ni5F4 the Mn and Ni ions are randomly distributed on a plane square lattice. The exchange energy between neighboring spins is of the Heisenberg form JS↘⋅S↘ with J=7.4 K, 25.7 K and 89 K for pairs of Mn−Mn, Mn−Ni, and Ni−Ni spins. The mean anisotropy field for the Mn and Ni spins is about 0.7% of the exchange field. The spin dynamics studied by inelastic neutron scattering has been described elsewhere (Phys. Rev. B12, 4963, (1975)) and only the results are summarized here. The dynamic susceptibility χ″ (q,ω) exhibitis two well‐defined peaks in frequency ω for a fixed wave‐vector q. The dispersion relations of the two modes shown in fig. 1 are well accounted for in a simple 4‐sublattice model (J. Phys. C, 8, L328 (1975)), and the width of the zone boundary peaks corresponds to the quintet of Ising frequencies of a spin with different configurations of neighboring spins. The results are in good agreement with χ″ (q,ω) as calculated by the CPA method (J. Phys. C, 8, 1889 (1975)) and also with Monte C...
