1. Thermal conductivity measurements of proton-heated warm dense aluminum

Abstract

Abstract Thermal conductivity is one of the most crucial physical properties of matter when it comes to understanding heat transport, hydrodynamic evolution, and energy balance in systems ranging from astrophysical objects to fusion plasmas. In the warm dense matter regime, experimental data are very scarce so that many theoretical models remain untested. Here we present the first thermal conductivity measurements of aluminum at 0.5–2.7 g/cc and 2–10 eV, using a recently developed platform of differential heating. A temperature gradient is induced in a Au/Al dual-layer target by proton heating, and subsequent heat flow from the hotter Au to the Al rear surface is detected by two simultaneous time-resolved diagnostics. A systematic data set allows for constraining both thermal conductivity and equation-of-state models. Simulations using Purgatorio model or Sesame S27314 for Al thermal conductivity and LEOS for Au/Al release equation-of-state show good agreement with data after 15 ps. Discrepancy still exists at early time 0–15 ps, likely due to non-equilibrium conditions.

Abstract

Abstract Plasma turbulence plays a key role in space and astrophysical plasma systems, enabling the energy of magnetic fields and plasma flows to be transported to particle kinetic scales at which the turbulence dissipates and heats the plasma. Identifying the physical mechanisms responsible for the dissipation of the turbulent energy is a critical step in developing the predictive capability for the turbulent heating needed by global models. In this work, spacecraft measurements of the electromagnetic fields and ion velocity distributions by the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission are used to generate velocity-space signatures that identify ion cyclotron damping in Earth’s turbulent magnetosheath, in agreement with analytical modeling. Furthermore, the rate of ion energization is directly quantified and combined with a previous analysis of the electron energization to identify the dominant channels of turbulent dissipation and determine the partitioning of energy among species in this interval.

Abstract

Abstract The current experiments searching for neutrinoless double- $$\beta $$ β ( $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β ) decay also collect large statistics of Standard Model allowed two-neutrino double- $$\beta $$ β ( $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β ) decay events. These can be used to search for Beyond Standard Model (BSM) physics via $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β decay spectral distortions. 100Mo has a natural advantage due to its relatively short half-life, allowing higher $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β decay statistics at equal exposures compared to the other isotopes. We demonstrate the potential of the dual read-out bolometric technique exploiting a 100Mo exposure of 1.47 kg $$\times $$ × years, acquired in the CUPID-Mo experiment at the Modane underground laboratory (France). We set limits on $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β decays with the emission of one or more Majorons, on $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β decay with Lorentz violation, and $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β decay with a sterile neutrino emission. In this analysis, we investigate the systematic uncertainty induced by modeling the $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β decay spectral shape parameterized through an improved model, an effect never considered before. This work motivates searches for BSM processes in the upcoming CUPID experiment, which will collect the largest amount of $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β decay events among the next-generation experiments.

Abstract

In this study,90Sr was used as the test radionuclide to characterize the sorption kinetics and effects of initial 90Sr activity and remaining 90Sr in solid concentration were simulated for a near-surface repository. The study focused on the sorption characteristics of radionuclides in unsaturated groundwater environment (or vadose zone) is the important information for investigating the near-surface disposal of intermediate and low-level radioactive waste (ILLW). Moreover, the 90Sr sorption experiments reached equilibrium within 56 h, which fit to the first order sorption kinetic model, and the remaining 90Sr in mudrock samples showed obvious sorption equilibrium hysteresis, which fit to the second order sorption kinetic model. Before reaching the maximum sorption capacity, the sorption rate constant increases with 90Sr increasing; the distribution coefficient (Kd) of 56 h decreases with the remaining 90Sr decreasing. In addition, it showed that the slow sorption process dominated before the sorption reaches equilibrium. In fact, a reliable safety assessment methodology for on-going near-surface repository required a lot of the radionuclides parameters with local environment including the radionuclides sorption/desorption rate constant and maximum sorption capacity.

5. Aerosol optical properties within the atmospheric boundary layer predicted from ground-based observations compared to Raman lidar retrievals during RITA-2021

Abstract

In this study, we utilised ground-based in situ measurements of the aerosol chemical composition and particle size distribution, along with meteorological data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), to predict vertical profiles of aerosol optical properties, including the aerosol scattering coefficient, backscatter coefficient, extinction coefficient, and lidar ratio. The predicted ambient profiles were compared to retrievals by a multi-wavelength Raman lidar during the Ruisdael Land–Atmosphere Interactions Intensive Trace-gas and Aerosol (RITA) campaign in the Netherlands in 2021 for 26 time periods of approximately 1 h each. Predicted and retrieved extensive aerosol properties (scattering, backscatter, and extinction coefficient) were comparable only approximately 35 % of the time, mostly under the condition of well-mixed boundary layers. In this case, ground-based measurements can provide a way to extend extinction profiles to lower altitudes, where they cannot be retrieved, and to verify the lidar-measured profiles. Accurate representation of hygroscopic growth is required for adjusting the dry size distribution to ambient size distribution, and the estimated relative humidity profile may have a substantial influence on the shape of the calculated profiles. On the other hand, the lidar ratio profiles predicted by ground-based data also compared reasonably well to the retrieved lidar profiles (starting at 800 m) for conditions where the predicted and retrieved backscatter profiles differed considerably. The difference in the predicted and retrieved lidar ratio is usually less than ±30 %. Our study thus shows that, for well-mixed boundary layers, a representative lidar ratio can be estimated from ground-based in situ measurements of chemical composition and dry size distribution. This approach offers a method of providing lidar ratios calculated from independent in situ measurements for simple backscatter lidars or at times when Raman lidar profiles cannot be measured (e.g. during the daytime). It only uses data that are routinely available at aerosol measurement stations and is therefore not only useful for further validating lidar measurements but also for bridging the gap between in situ measurements and lidar remote sensing.

Abstract

High-intensity short-pulse lasers have made possible the generation of energetic proton beams, unlocking numerous applications in high energy density science. One such application is uniform and isochoric heating of materials to the warm dense matter (WDM) state. We have developed a new experimental platform to simultaneously create and probe WDM at the matter in extreme conditions (MEC) end station at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). The short pulse optical laser (delivering up to 1 J in 45 fs) and the ultrabright LCLS X-ray laser with tunable frequency, respectively, deliver high power required to heat materials to WDM and precision-timed high-resolution X-rays to probe them. The laser-accelerated proton beam driven from a flat 1.5- $\mu \text{m}$ Cu foil was first measured then directed to a secondary sample of Al or polypropylene (PP), typically 300– $400~\mu \text{m}$ away. The time evolution of the sample electron temperature was measured using streaked optical pyrometry, where we observed a peak temperature of 0.9 ± 0.15 eV on the rear surface of an Al sample heated by the proton beam. Simulations using the hybrid-PIC code LSP and the rad-hydro code HELIOS show that a measured proton beam can heat Al to approximately 4 eV and PP to 1 eV if instead focused by a hemispherical Cu target. Through additional LSP simulations, we anticipate creating hotter WDM states (~20 eV) by increasing the laser energy to 10 J and keeping the other laser parameters fixed.

7. Response patterns of moss to atmospheric nitrogen deposition and nitrogen saturation in an urban–agro–forest transition

Abstract

Increasing trends of atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition resulting from a large number of anthropogenic emissions of reactive N are dramatically altering the global biogeochemical cycle of N. Nitrogen uptake by mosses occurs mainly from the atmosphere, making it a competent bio-indicator of N deposition. However, high uncertainties exist when using mosses to indicate N deposition, especially in choosing sampling periods and sampling frequencies. In this study, atmospheric N deposition and moss N content in the urban–agro–forest transition, a region with a high N deposition level of 27.46–43.70 kg N hm−2 yr−1, were monitored, and the method for monitoring atmospheric N deposition by mosses was optimized. We found that the optimal sampling frequency is within 6 months per time, and the optimal sampling times are winter (January and February), autumn (October and November), and summer (July and August), which provides us with a more accurate estimation of atmospheric N deposition than other scenarios. In addition, the moss N content serves as a more reliable N species. This study eventually allowed mosses to be used more effectively and sensibly as an indicator of atmospheric N deposition and helped to improve the accuracy of the model for quantifying N deposition.

8. Measurement report: Evaluation of the TOF-ACSM-CV for PM1.0 and PM2.5 measurements during the RITA-2021 field campaign

Abstract

The recently developed time-of-flight aerosol chemical speciation monitor with a capture vaporizer and a PM2.5 aerodynamic lens (TOF-ACSM-CV-PM2.5) aims to improve the collection efficiency and chemical characterization of aerosol particles with a diameter smaller than 2.5 µm. In this study, comprehensive cross-comparisons were performed between real-time online measurements and offline filter analysis with 24 h collection time. The goal was to evaluate the capabilities of the TOF-ACSM-CV-PM2.5 lens, as well as the accuracy of the TOF-ACSM-CV-PM2.5. The experiments were conducted at Cabauw Experimental Site for Atmospheric Research (CESAR) during the RITA-2021 campaign. The non-refractory fine particulate matter (PM1.0 and PM2.5) was measured by two collocated TOF-ACSM-CV-PM2.5 instruments by placing them behind a PM2.5 and PM1.0 inlet, respectively. A comparison between the ACSMs and PM2.5 and PM1.0 filter samples showed a much better accuracy than ±30 % less given in the previous reports, with average differences less than ±10 % for all inorganic chemical species. In addition, the ACSMs were compared to the Monitoring Instrument for Aerosol and Gas (MARGA) (slope between 0.78 and 0.97 for inorganic compounds, R2≥ 0.93) and a mobility particle size spectrometer (MPSS), measuring the particle size distribution from around 10 to 800 nm (slope was around 1.00, R2= 0.91). The intercomparison of the online measurements and the comparison between the online and offline measurements indicated a low bias (< 10 % for inorganic compounds) and demonstrated the high accuracy and stability of the TOF-ACSM-CV-PM2.5 lens for the atmospheric observations of particle matter. The two ACSMs exhibited an excellent agreement, with differences less than 7 %, which allowed a quantitative estimate of PM1.0 vs. PM2.5 chemical composition. The result showed that the PM1.0 accounted for about 70 %–80 % of the PM2.5 on average. The NO3 mass fraction increased, but the organic carbon (OC) mass fraction decreased from PM1.0 to PM2.5, indicating the size dependence on chemical composition.

Abstract

The grading rings working in complex environment are often reported with corona discharge. Their surfaces are often found with non_ideal surface morphology affected by wind erosion and/or dirt accumulation. To reduce corona discharge of these grading rings operated online, two anti-corona schemes, grinding and RTV(Room Temperature Vulcanized Silicone Rubber) coating, are proposed. Through analyzing the simulation results, it is found that the two schemes can improve the surface electric field to achieve the purpose of anti-corona. After comparing the two schemes, RTV coating scheme shows more obvious to reduce the maximum electric field intensity of the surface than the grinding scheme, and RTV coating is easier than grinding to be implemented in engineering practice.

Abstract

In order to deeply study the relations between non-ideal surface morphology with corona onset voltage of grading ring, a series of experiments are proposed based on the established experimental platform testing corona onset voltage of grading ring. By comparing the corona onset voltage of grading ring of cone, cylinder and hemisphere convex morphology, it is found that cone has the most significant effect on corona onset voltage reduction of grading ring. Then, four kind of experiments are implemented according to the different morphological characteristics of cone, such as the distribution location of a cone, the distance between two cones, the cone numbers per unit length, and the apex difference of adjacent cones. The results show that when the cone is closer to the outside of the grading ring, the corona onset voltage decreases greater; when the distance between two cones changes from small to large, the corona onset voltage decreases gradually, and when the distance is greater than a certain value, two cones start corona almost independently; when the cone numbers per unit length increases, the corona onset voltage increases and tends to be stable; the corona onset voltage of grading ring decreases with the increase of the apex difference of adjacent cones on its surface. The research results have supplied the quantitative relations between non-ideal surface morphology with corona onset voltage of grading ring. They can be utilized to analyze the corona reason of grading ring, monitor the surface situation online and make corresponding anti-corona measures.

13. Frequent haze events associated with transport and stagnation over the corridor between the North China Plain and Yangtze River Delta

Abstract

PM2.5 pollution is a major air quality issue that deteriorates human health, and numerous studies have focused on PM2.5 pollution in major regions such as the North China Plain (NCP) and Yangtze River Delta (YRD). However, the characteristics of PM2.5 concentrations and the associated formation mechanism in the transport corridor (referred to as SWLY) between the NCP and YRD are largely ignored. Based on observational data, we find that the number of PM2.5 pollution events in SWLY is comparable to that in the NCP, far exceeding that in the YRD, which is indicative of the severity of air pollution in this area. Utilizing a regional climate and air quality model, we isolate the effect of seesaw transport events, e.g., transport between the NCP and YRD, and atmospheric stagnation on the accumulation of PM2.5 over SWLY. Specifically, seesaw events and stagnation, comparable to each other, collectively account for an average of 67 % of pollution days, with PM2.5 exceeding 75 µg m−3, and this fraction (85 %) is even larger for severe haze events, with PM2.5 exceeding 150 µg m−3. Furthermore, the connection between seesaw transport and large-scale circulation is examined. The transregional transport of pollutants from the NCP to the YRD (YRD to NCP) is likely stimulated by positive (negative) to negative (positive) geopotential height anomalies at 500 hPa located in northern China. The health effect due to short-term PM2.5 exposure induced by the transregional transport and stagnation is investigated, yielding a total of 8634 (95 % CI: 6023–11 223) and 9496 (95 % CI: 6552–12 413) premature deaths, respectively, in SWLY during winter 2014–2019, which is as high as 9 % of the total premature deaths in China, even though SWLY takes up less than 1 % of China's area. While atmospheric stagnation is in general projected to occur more frequently under a warming climate, this study indicates the importance of regional emission control to alleviate PM2.5 pollution from seesaw transport and stagnation.

Abstract

Stereo vision has been proven to be an efficient tool for 3D reconstruction in lunar topographic mapping. However, point clouds reconstructed from pairs of stereo images always suffer from occlusions and illumination changes, especially in Lunar environments, resulting in incomplete geometric information. 3D point cloud completion is usually required for refining photogrammetric point clouds and enabling further applications. In this work, we address the problem of completing and refining 3D photogrammetric point clouds based on the assumption that 3D terrain should be continuous and with consistent slope change. We proposed a generalized strategy for 3D point cloud completion of lunar topographic mapping, including distance-weighted point cloud interpolation, terrian-continuous constrained outlier detection, and contour-based hole filling. We carried out experiments on two datasets of point clouds generated from 12 pairs and 6 pairs of stereo LROC NAC images covering the Apollo 17 and the Chang’E-4 landing sites, respectively. As a result, the holes in the initial DTM have been smoothly filled and the completeness of the whole DTM has been greatly improved. The incomplete area of the experimental areas has dropped by 100% and 93%, respectively. Finally, we constructed DTM with a resolution of 10 m covering a 33 km × 60 km area of the Apollo 17 landing site with RMSE of 4 m and a 12 km × 56 km area of Chang’E-4 landing site with RMSE of 4 m compared with LOLA laser points as a reference.

Abstract

Background: Results from retrospective studies suggest that use of neuromuscular blocking agents during general anaesthesia might be linked to postoperative pulmonary complications. We therefore aimed to assess whether the use of neuromuscular blocking agents is associated with postoperative pulmonary complications. Methods: We did a multicentre, prospective observational cohort study. Patients were recruited from 211 hospitals in 28 European countries. We included patients (aged ≥18 years) who received general anaesthesia for any in-hospital procedure except cardiac surgery. Patient characteristics, surgical and anaesthetic details, and chart review at discharge were prospectively collected over 2 weeks. Additionally, each patient underwent postoperative physical examination within 3 days of surgery to check for adverse pulmonary events. The study outcome was the incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications from the end of surgery up to postoperative day 28. Logistic regression analyses were adjusted for surgical factors and patients' preoperative physical status, providing adjusted odds ratios (ORadj) and adjusted absolute risk reduction (ARRadj). This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01865513. Findings: Between June 16, 2014, and April 29, 2015, data from 22 803 patients were collected. The use of neuromuscular blocking agents was associated with an increased incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications in patients who had undergone general anaesthesia (1658 [7·6%] of 21 694); ORadj 1·86, 95% CI 1·53–2·26; ARRadj −4·4%, 95% CI −5·5 to −3·2). Only 2·3% of high-risk surgical patients and those with adverse respiratory profiles were anaesthetised without neuromuscular blocking agents. The use of neuromuscular monitoring (ORadj 1·31, 95% CI 1·15–1·49; ARRadj −2·6%, 95% CI −3·9 to −1·4) and the administration of reversal agents (1·23, 1·07–1·41; −1·9%, −3·2 to −0·7) were not associated with a decreased risk of postoperative pulmonary complications. Neither the choice of sugammadex instead of neostigmine for reversal (ORadj 1·03, 95% CI 0·85–1·25; ARRadj −0·3%, 95% CI −2·4 to 1·5) nor extubation at a train-of-four ratio of 0·9 or more (1·03, 0·82–1·31; −0·4%, −3·5 to 2·2) was associated with better pulmonary outcomes. Interpretation: We showed that the use of neuromuscular blocking drugs in general anaesthesia is associated with an increased risk of postoperative pulmonary complications. Anaesthetists must balance the potential benefits of neuromuscular blockade against the increased risk of postoperative pulmonary complications. Funding: European Society of Anaesthesiology.

Abstract

Shocks are abundant both in astrophysical and laboratory systems. While the electric fields generated at shock fronts have recently attracted great attention, the associated self-generated magnetic field is rarely studied, despite its ability to significantly affect the shock profile in the nonideal geometry where density and temperature gradients are not parallel. We report here the observation of a magnetic field at the front of a Mach $\ensuremath{\sim}6$ shock propagating in a low-density helium gas system. Proton radiography from different projection angles not only confirms the magnetic field's existence, but also provides a quantitative measurement of the field strength in the range $\ensuremath{\sim}5$ to 7 T. X-ray spectrometry allowed inference of the density and temperature at the shock front, constraining the plasma conditions under which the magnetic and electric fields are generated. Simulations with the particle-in-cell code lsp attribute the self-generation of the magnetic field to the Biermann battery effect ($\ensuremath{\nabla}{n}_{e}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\ensuremath{\nabla}{T}_{e}$).

Abstract

SUMMARY Controversy exists on the advantages of robotic McKeown esophagectomy (RME) versus thoraco-laparoscopic McKeown esophagectomy (TLME). The aim was to evaluate the short- and mid-term outcomes of RME and TLME in the treatment of patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). A consecutive series of 652 patients, 280 in RME and 372 in TLME, who underwent minimally invasive McKeown esophagectomy for ESCC at our department from November 2015 to June 2018 was analyzed. A propensity score-matched comparison with clinicopathological covariates was performed between the two groups. Complications were categorized based on the Esophagectomy Complications Consensus Group (ECCG) recommendation. To identify the recurrence, all patients with R0 resection were followed with a median follow-up period of 20.2 months (range 1–33 months). After propensity score matching, 271 patients were identified for each cohort. In the matched cohorts, two patients died within 90 days in TLME, whereas no patients died in RME. Abstract

Abstract CUPID-Mo, located in the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (France), was a demonstrator for the next generation $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β decay experiment, CUPID. It consisted of an array of 20 enriched Li $$_{2}$$ 2 $$^{100}$$ 100 MoO $$_4$$ 4 bolometers and 20 Ge light detectors and has demonstrated that the technology of scintillating bolometers with particle identification capabilities is mature. Furthermore, CUPID-Mo can inform and validate the background prediction for CUPID. In this paper, we present a detailed model of the CUPID-Mo backgrounds. This model is able to describe well the features of the experimental data and enables studies of the $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β decay and other processes with high precision. We also measure the radio-purity of the Li $$_{2}$$ 2 $$^{100}$$ 100 MoO $$_4$$ 4 crystals which are found to be sufficient for the CUPID goals. Finally, we also obtain a background index in the region of interest of 3.7 $$^{+0.9}_{-0.8}$$ - 0.8 + 0.9 (stat) $$^{+1.5}_{-0.7}$$ - 0.7 + 1.5 (syst) $$\times ~10 ^{-3}$$ × 10 - 3 counts/ $$\Delta E_{\text {FWHM}}/\text {mol}_{\text {iso}}/\text {year},$$ Δ E FWHM / mol iso / year , the lowest in a bolometric $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β decay experiment.

Abstract

Warm dense carbon is generated at 0.3-2.0 g/cc and 1-7 eV by proton heating. The release equation of state (EOS) after heating and thermal conductivity of warm dense carbon are studied experimentally in this regime using a Au/C dual-layer target to initiate a temperature gradient and two picosecond time-resolved diagnostics to probe the surface expansion and heat flow. Comparison between the data and simulations using various EOSs and thermal conductivity models is quantified with a statistical χ^{2} analysis. Out of seven EOS tables and five thermal conductivity models, only L9061 with the Lee-More model provides a probability above 50% to match all data.

Abstract

Global climate change leads to simultaneous changes in multiple environmental drivers in the marine realm. Although physiological characterization of coccolithophores has been studied under climate change, there is limited knowledge on the biochemical responses of this biogeochemically important phytoplankton group to changing multiple environmental drivers. Here, we investigate the interactive effects of reduced phosphorus availability (4 to 0.4 µmol L−1), elevated pCO2 concentrations (426 to 946 µatm), and increasing light intensity (40 to 300 µmol photons m−2 s−1) on elemental content and macromolecules of the cosmopolitan coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi. Reduced phosphorus availability reduces particulate organic nitrogen (PON) and protein contents per cell under 40 µmol photons m−2 s−1 but not under 300 µmol photons m−2 s−1. Reduced phosphorus availability and elevated pCO2 concentrations act synergistically to increase particulate organic carbon (POC) and carbohydrate contents per cell under 300 µmol photons m−2 s−1 but not under 40 µmol photons m−2 s−1. Reduced phosphorus availability, elevated pCO2 concentrations, and increasing light intensity act synergistically to increase the allocation of POC to carbohydrates. Under elevated pCO2 concentrations and increasing light intensity, enhanced carbon fixation could increase carbon storage in the phosphorus-limited regions of the oceans where E. huxleyi dominates the phytoplankton assemblages. In each type of light intensity, elemental-carbon-to-phosphorus (C:P) and nitrogen-to-phosphorus (N:P) ratios decrease with increasing growth rate. These results suggest that coccolithophores could reallocate chemical elements and energy to synthesize macromolecules efficiently, which allows them to regulate their elemental content and growth rate to acclimate to changing environmental conditions.

Abstract

This work investigated seasonal variation of aerosol iron (Fe) solubility for coarse (>1 µm) and fine ( µm) particles at Xi'an, a megacity in northwestern China impacted by anthropogenic emission and desert dust. Total Fe concentrations were lowest in summer and were similar in other seasons for coarse particles but lowest in summer and highest in spring for fine particles; for comparison, dissolved Fe concentrations were higher in fall and winter than spring and summer for coarse particles but highest in winter and lowest in spring and summer for fine particles. Desert-dust aerosol was always the major source of total Fe for both coarse and fine particles in all four seasons, but it may not be the dominant source of dissolved Fe. Fe solubility was lowest in spring for both coarse and fine particles and highest in winter for coarse particles and in fall for fine particles. In general, aerosol Fe solubility was found to be higher in air masses originating from local and nearby regions than those arriving from desert regions after long-distance transport. Compared to coarse particles, Fe solubility was similar for fine particles in spring but significantly higher in the other three seasons, and at a given aerosol pH range, Fe solubility was always higher in fine particles. Aerosol Fe solubility was well correlated with relative abundance of aerosol acidic species, implying aerosol Fe solubility enhancement by acid processing; moreover, such correlations were better for coarse particles than fine particles in all four seasons. Fe solubility was found to increase with relative humidity and acid acidity for both coarse and fine particles at Xi'an, underscoring the importance of aerosol liquid water and aerosol acidity in regulating Fe solubility via chemical processing.

Abstract

Thermal conductivity is one of the most crucial physical properties of matter when it comes to understanding heat transport, hydrodynamic evolution, and energy balance in systems ranging from astrophysical objects to fusion plasmas. In the warm dense matter regime, experimental data are very scarce so that many theoretical models remain untested. Here we present the first thermal conductivity measurements of aluminum at 0.5–2.7 g/cc and 2–10 eV, using a recently developed platform of differential heating. A temperature gradient is induced in a Au/Al dual-layer target by proton heating, and subsequent heat flow from the hotter Au to the Al rear surface is detected by two simultaneous time-resolved diagnostics. A systematic data set allows for constraining both thermal conductivity and equation-of-state models. Simulations using Purgatorio model or Sesame S27314 for Al thermal conductivity and LEOS for Au/Al release equation-of-state show good agreement with data after 15 ps. Discrepancy still exists at early time 0–15 ps, likely due to non-equilibrium conditions.

Abstract

It is known that shock front is not a simple discontinuity as depicted in commonly used hydro codes but consists of selfgenerated fields [1]. A quasi-planar platform using broadband proton radiography has been developed to study the field structure at a shock front. The broad bandwidth offers energy-dependent measurements which quantitatively constrain both the potential and field width at the shock front. Experiments were conducted on the OMEGA EP, where three long pulse beams delivered 6 kJ in 2 ns for shock initiation in a gas filled tube and a short pulse of 850 J, 10 ps generated broadband protons for point-projection radiography. Simultaneous spatially resolved soft-x-ray spectroscopy provided shock velocity, particle velocity and thermal emission measurements, constraining density and temperature for the field generation. The data and modeling indicate that a multi-KeV potential was present at the shock front where a strong electron pressure gradient existed.

Abstract

A proton backlighting platform has been developed for the study of strong shock propagation in low-density systems in planar geometry. Electric fields at the converging shock front in inertial confinement fusion implosions have been previously observed, demonstrating the presence of—and the need to understand—strong electric fields not modeled in standard radiation-hydrodynamic simulations. In this planar configuration, long-pulse ultraviolet lasers are used to drive a strong shock into a gas-cell target, while a short-pulse proton backlighter side-on radiographs the shock propagation. The capabilities of the platform are presented here. Future experiments will vary shock strength and gas fill, to probe shock conditions at different Z and Te.

Abstract

Evaporation from global oceans is an important moisture source for glaciers and headwaters of major Asian rivers in the Tibetan Plateau (TP). Although the accelerated global hydrological cycle, the altered sea–land thermal contrast and the amplified warming rate over the TP during the past several decades are known to have profound effects on the regional water balance, the spatial distribution of oceanic moisture contributions to the vast TP remains unclear. This hinders the accurate quantification of regional water budgets and the reasonable interpretation of water isotope records from observations and paleo archives. Based on historical data and moisture tracking, this study systematically quantifies the absolute and relative contributions of oceanic moisture to long-term precipitation in the TP. Results show that the seasonal absolute and relative oceanic contributions are generally out of phase, revealing the previously underestimated oceanic moisture contributions brought by the westerlies in winter and the overestimated moisture contributions from the Indian Ocean in summer. Quantitatively, the relative contribution of moisture from the Indian Ocean is only ∼30 % in the south TP and further decreases to below 10 % in the northernmost TP. The absolute oceanic contribution exhibits a spatial pattern consistent with the dipole pattern of long-term precipitation trends across the Brahmaputra Canyon region and the central-northern TP. In comparison, relative oceanic contributions show strong seasonal patterns associated with the seasonality of precipitation isotopes across the TP.

Abstract

Understanding the patterns of atmospheric phosphorus (P) deposition is essential for assessing the global P biogeochemical cycle. Atmospheric P is an essential source of P in agricultural activities as well as eutrophication in waters; however, the information on P deposition is paid relatively less attention, especially in the anthropogenic influencing region. Therefore, this study chose a typical urban–rural transition as a representative case to monitor the dry and wet P depositions for 2 years. The results showed that the fluxes of atmospheric total P deposition ranged from 0.50 to 1.06 kg P hm−2 yr−1, and the primary form was atmospheric dry P deposition (76.1 %, 0.76–0.84 kg P hm−2 yr−1). Moreover, it was found that the monthly variations of P deposition were strongly correlated with meteorological factors, including precipitation, temperature and relative humidity. However, the fluxes of dry P deposition and total P deposition were more affected by land use, which increased with the agro-facility, town and paddy field areas but decreased with the forest and country road areas. These findings suggested that dry P deposition was the primary form of total P deposition, and P deposition could be affected both by meteorological factors and land-use types. Thus, proper management of land use may help mitigate the pollution caused by P deposition.

Abstract

Abstract The CUPID-Mo experiment to search for 0 $$\nu \beta \beta $$ ν β β decay in $$^{100}$$ 100 Mo has been recently completed after about 1.5 years of operation at Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (France). It served as a demonstrator for CUPID, a next generation 0 $$\nu \beta \beta $$ ν β β decay experiment. CUPID-Mo was comprised of 20 enriched $$\hbox {Li}_{{2}}$$ Li 2 $$^{100}$$ 100 $$\hbox {MoO}_4$$ MoO 4 scintillating calorimeters, each with a mass of $$\sim 0.2$$ ∼ 0.2 kg, operated at $$\sim 20$$ ∼ 20 mK. We present here the final analysis with the full exposure of CUPID-Mo ( $$^{100}$$ 100 Mo exposure of 1.47 $$\hbox {kg} \times \hbox {year}$$ kg × year ) used to search for lepton number violation via 0 $$\nu \beta \beta $$ ν β β decay. We report on various analysis improvements since the previous result on a subset of data, reprocessing all data with these new techniques. We observe zero events in the region of interest and set a new limit on the $$^{100}$$ 100 Mo 0 $$\nu \beta \beta $$ ν β β decay half-life of $$T_{1/2}^{0\nu }$$ T 1 / 2 0 ν $$> {1.8}\times 10^{24}$$ > 1.8 × 10 24 year (stat. + syst.) at 90% CI. Under the light Majorana neutrino exchange mechanism this corresponds to an effective Majorana neutrino mass of $$\left$$ m β β $$

Abstract

A remarkable increase in traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) morbidity has occurred in China from 2001 to 2010 due to rapid industrial and economic development; this increase seriously threatens public health. The current study investigated the major causes and severity of TSCI in 561 hospitalized TSCI patients who came from all over China to the General Hospital of Chinese People's Armed Police Forces.Information (including each patient's age, gender, time and cause of injury and severity of spinal cord injury (SCI, complete or incomplete)) regarding 561 hospitalized TSCI patients whose injuries occurred between 2001 and 2010 was retrospectively analyzed.Among the 561 patients, the youngest was 9 months old and the oldest was 67 years old; the average patient age was 34.74 ± 12.24 years. The sex ratio was 4.1:1 (male:female). The injuries were primarily caused by transportation accidents (51.2%), falling from a height (23.9%), tamping (8.6%), stumbling (8.0%), stabbing (3.0%) and crushing (1.8%). Although no statistically significant associations were observed between the different injury causes and severity of the injury, a statistically significant association was observed between the different injury causes and levels of the lesion.Transportation accidents, falling from a height, tamping, stumbling, stabbing and crushing are the most common causes of TSCI. No statistically significant relationships were observed between certain injury causes and either complete or incomplete injury. However, different injury causes usually led to different levels of the lesion. No statistical differences were observed between the levels of the lesion and either complete or incomplete injury.

Abstract

A facile process was developed for synthesizing vanadium dioxide (VO2) by pyrolyzing ammonium metavanadate (NH4VO3) in nitrogen flow. The process was designed on the base of thermodynamic modeling of chemical reaction and thermal analyzing of NH4VO3 pyrogenation in N2 gas, and optimized by experiments. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were applied to characterizing the product VO2. Thermo-gravimetric analysis (TG) and DSC were used for analyzing the process of NH4VO3 pyrogenation. The experimental results indicated that VO2 microcrystal particles were successfully synthesized. The product VO2 presents two kinds of micro morphologies, torispherical and pentagonal prism. The phase transition mainly takes place at 338.4 K and 341.9 K. The average enthalpy of the phase transition is 28.82 J/g.

Abstract

Some antimethanogenic feed additives for ruminants promote rumen dihydrogen (H2) accumulation potentially affecting the optimal fermentation of diets. We hypothesised that combining an H2 acceptor with a methanogenesis inhibitor can decrease rumen H2 build-up and improve the production of metabolites that can be useful for the host ruminant. We performed three in vitro incubation experiments using rumen fluid from lactating Holstein cows: Experiment 1 examined the effect of phenolic compounds (phenol, catechol, resorcinol, hydroquinone, pyrogallol, phloroglucinol, and gallic acid) at 0, 2, 4, and 6 mM on ruminal fermentation for 24 h; Experiment 2 examined the combined effect of each phenolic compound from Experiment 1 at 6 mM with two different methanogenesis inhibitors (Asparagopsis taxiformis or 2-bromoethanesulfonate (BES)) for 24 h incubation; Experiment 3 examined the effect of a selected phenolic compound, phloroglucinol, with or without BES over a longer term using sequential incubations for seven days. Results from Experiment 1 showed that phenolic compounds, independently of the dose, did not negatively affect rumen fermentation, whereas results from Experiment 2 showed that phenolic compounds did not decrease H2 accumulation or modify CH4 production when methanogenesis was decreased by up to 75% by inhibitors. In Experiment 3, after three sequential incubations, phloroglucinol combined with BES decreased H2 accumulation by 72% and further inhibited CH4 production, compared to BES alone. Interestingly, supplementation with phloroglucinol (alone or in combination with the CH4 inhibitor) decreased CH4 production by 99% and the abundance of methanogenic archaea, with just a nominal increase in H2 accumulation. Supplementation of phloroglucinol also increased total volatile fatty acid (VFA), acetate, butyrate, and total gas production, and decreased ammonia concentration. This study indicates that some phenolic compounds, particularly phloroglucinol, which are naturally found in plants, could improve VFA production, decrease H2 accumulation and synergistically decrease CH4 production in the presence of antimethanogenic compounds.

Abstract

Most mitigation strategies to reduce enteric methane (CH4) production in the rumen induce an excess of rumen dihydrogen (H2) that is expelled and consequently not redirected to the synthesis of metabolites that can be utilised by the ruminant. We hypothesised that phenolic compounds can be potential H2 acceptors when added to the diet, as they can be degraded to compounds that may be beneficial for the animal, using part of the H2 available when ruminal methanogenesis is inhibited. We performed four in vitro incubation experiments using rumen inoculum from Murciano-Granadina adult goats: Experiment 1 examined the inhibitory potential of Asparagopsis taxiformis (AT) at different concentrations (0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5% of the substrate on a DM basis) in 24 h incubations; Experiment 2 investigated the effect of a wide range of phenolic compounds (phenol, catechol, resorcinol, hydroquinone, pyrogallol, phloroglucinol, gallic acid and formic acid) at different doses (0, 2, 4, and 6 mM) on rumen fermentation for 24 h; Experiment 3 evaluated the combined effect of each phenolic compound at 6 mM with AT at 2% DM in sequential batch cultures for 5 days; and Experiment 4 examined the dose–response effect of phloroglucinol at different concentrations (0, 6, 16, 26 and 36 mM) combined with AT in sequential batch cultures for 5 days. Results from Experiment 1 confirmed that AT at 2% DM substantially inhibited CH4 production while significantly increasing H2 accumulation and decreasing the acetate:propionate ratio. Results from Experiment 2 showed that phenolic compounds did not negatively affect rumen fermentation at any dose. In Experiment 3, each phenolic compound at 6 mM combined with AT at 2% DM inhibited CH4 production. Phloroglucinol numerically decreased H2 accumulation and significantly increased total gas production (TGP), volatile fatty acid (VFA) production and the acetate:propionate ratio. In Experiment 4, phloroglucinol at increasing doses supplemented with AT at 2% DM significantly decreased H2 accumulation and the abundances of archaea, protozoa and fungi abundances, and increased TGP, total VFA production and the acetate:propionate ratio in a dose-dependent way. In conclusion, combined treatment with AT and phloroglucinol was successful to mitigate CH4 production while preventing the accumulation of H2, leading to an increase in acetate and total VFA production and therefore an improvement in rumen fermentation in goats.

Abstract

Bombyx mori (B. mori) silk was modified with the nano-TiO2 and chitosan dispersion system by the crosslinking reactions of citric acid (CA) and maleic anhydride (MA). The average size of the nano-TiO2 particles in the aqueous dispersion system was 36.7 nm. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs showed that the nano-TiO2 particles were spherical and homogeneously dispersed in the dispersion system, and the surface ofB. mori silk fiber treated with the nano-TiO2 and chitosan dispersion system was rougher than that of the untreated one. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) Spectrometry indicated that the crystallinity of theB. mori silk fiber increased after treatment. It was also found that the nano-TiO2 and chitosan contributed to significantly enhance the mechanical properties including breaking strength, breaking elongation, initial modulus, rupture work, and elastic recovery property of theB. mori silk fiber. The wrinkle-resistant performance of the treatedB. mori silk fabrics was also greatly improved.

Abstract

Encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) can cause acute myocarditis in young pigs or reproductive failure in sows. The BD2 strain was isolated from the suspected piglets with EMCV in China. In order to establish an experimental animal model of EMCV, eight-weeks-old male BALB/c mice were intraperitonealy inoculated with 0.1 ml of 4×10(5) TCID50 suspension of the EMCV. Infected mice demonstrated hind limb paralysis, and movement disorder. The mortality rate of the infected group was 100% during the one-week observation period. The viral load in the brain of challenged mice gradually increased, with a peak level being 6.53 log CCID50/0.1 ml 5 days post infection. The pathological injury in infected mice was presented as neuronal necrosis. Brown positive staining could be detected in the cytoplasm of cerebral neurons. These results indicate that the porcine EMCV isolated from China could replicate in brain tissues and induce acute encephalitis in BALB/c mice.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to improve the understanding of FBA in children and to decrease the rate of misdiagnosis, missed diagnosis and morbidity.We analyzed the clinical features and the three-dimensional reconstructed CT images of 590 children with foreign body aspiration (FBA) in the Xuzhou area of the Jiangsu province.CT imaging revealed common complications of FBA including emphysema (n = 379), pneumonia (n = 174), and atelectasis (n = 26). The remaining 120 patients had no visible complications on the three-dimensional reconstructed CT images. Serious complications including pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum, subcutaneous emphysema, pneumatorrhachis could also be observed. The types of foreign bodies were diverse: the most common were peanuts and sunflower seeds. The diagnostic accuracy of the three-dimensional CT imaging was high, with a sensitivity and specificity of 99.83% and 99.89%, respectively.3D CT imaging is an accurate, non-invasive technique to evaluate children with suspected FBA that can help decrease the rate of misdiagnosis and eliminate a delay in treatment for this potentially life-threatening condition.

Abstract

Natural disasters cause considerable losses to people’s lives and property. Satellite images can provide crucial information of the affected areas for the first time, conducive to relieving the people in disaster and reducing the economic loss. However, the traditional satellite image analysis method based on manual processing drains workforce and material resources, which slowed the government’s response to the disaster. Aiming at the natural disasters like floods and earthquakes that often happen in the south of China, we propose a dual-stage damage assessment method based on LEDNet and ResNet. Our method detects the changes between the satellite images captured before and after a disaster of the same area, segments the buildings, and evaluates the damage level of affected buildings. In addition, we calculate influence maps based on the damage scale to the building and estimate the damage situation for electrical facilities. We used images related to earthquakes and floods in the xBD dataset to train the network model. Moreover, qualitative and quantitative evaluations demonstrated that our method has higher accuracy than the xBD baseline.

Abstract

Vegetation management is important to the power transmission and distribution networks. The encompassed towering tree is always the key factor of the high impedance faults(HIFs).LiDAR is an efficient way to detect trees with 3D point cloud. The classical tree detection algorithm can handle the tree with high and distinct trunk,but limited to the tree with messy trunks. While the deeplearning based detection algorithms are also suffered from the terrain noise points. In this paper, we propose an efficient LiDAR reconstruction system which can efficiently reconstruct the point cloud of surrounding vegetation without the ground plane noise. We also use different weight strategies to improve the localization accuracy. We have conducted our system on the real power network environment and the height detection result shows that our algorithm has a better accuracy and robustness compared with the classical methods.
