Picea sitchensis, Sitka spruce, is of interest to forestry as both a conservation species and a highly productive crop. Its native range stretches from Alaska to California, and it is hence distributed across a large environmental cline with areas of local adaptation. The IUFRO collection, established in 1968–1970, consists of 81 provenances of commercial and scientific interest spanning this native range. We used genotyping-by-sequencing on 1177 genotypes, originating from 80 of the IUFRO provenances which occupy 19 geographic regions of the Pacific Northwest, resulting in an SNP database of 36,567 markers. We detected low levels of genetic differentiation across this broad environmental cline, in agreement with other studies. However, we discovered island effects on geographically distant populations, such as those on Haida Gwaii and Kodiak Island. Using glaciation data, alongside this database, we see apparent post-glacial recolonization of the mainland from islands and the south of the range. Genotyping the IUFRO population expands upon the use of the collection in three ways: (i) providing information to breeders on genetic diversity which can be implemented into breeding programs, optimizing genetic gain for important traits; (ii) serving a scientific resource for studying spruce species; and (iii) utilizing provenances in breeding programs which are more tolerant to climate change.

Miscanthus is a perennial wild grass that is of global importance for paper production, roofing, horticultural plantings, and an emerging highly productive temperate biomass crop. We report a chromosome-scale assembly of the paleotetraploid M. sinensis genome, providing a resource for Miscanthus that links its chromosomes to the related diploid Sorghum and complex polyploid sugarcanes. The asymmetric distribution of transposons across the two homoeologous subgenomes proves Miscanthus paleo-allotetraploidy and identifies several balanced reciprocal homoeologous exchanges. Analysis of M. sinensis and M. sacchariflorus populations demonstrates extensive interspecific admixture and hybridization, and documents the origin of the highly productive triploid bioenergy crop M. × giganteus. Transcriptional profiling of leaves, stem, and rhizomes over growing seasons provides insight into rhizome development and nutrient recycling, processes critical for sustainable biomass accumulation in a perennial temperate grass. The Miscanthus genome expands the power of comparative genomics to understand traits of importance to Andropogoneae grasses., The perennial grass Miscanthus is a promising biomass crop. Here, via genomics and transcriptomics, the authors reveal its allotetraploid origin, characterize gene expression associated with rhizome development and nutrient recycling, and describe the hybrid origin of the triploid M. x giganteus.

This article examines the return of the dead to life in two television drama series of the last decade, Les Revenants (The Returned; 2012–15, Canal) and Glitch (2015–19, ABC Studios). The returning dead do not figure as classic undead figures, as ghosts or zombies, instead returning to life exactly as they were at the point of death and in search of a renewed purpose and an ultimate destiny. This, the article suggests, can constitute a form of latter-day resurrection. The article shows how both series present established religion as incapable of recognizing the return of the dead, while science and the secular state are also never wholly able to explain and manage these apparent miracles. The return of this seemingly religious trope to an ostensibly secular world and the mutual jostling and overlapping of theological, scientific, and aesthetic discourses, as they seek to represent and explain the mystery, not only constitutes a postsecular theme but also occasions the search, at times inherent to artistic form, at times explicit and self-reflexive, for an appropriately postsecular televisual aesthetics.

A previously unrecognized species represented by six spirit samples in the collection of the late Gunnar Seidenfaden, pioneering Danish explorer of the Thai orchid flora, is newly described. It is evident that Seidenfaden was perplexed by the material, as three different species names can be observed on the labels (often accompanied by question marks or indications such as “probably”): D. fimbriatum, D. gibsonii and D. chryseum. In our view, the new species has the strongest morphological resemblance to D. fimbriatum, but it differs in characters of the stems, leaves, lateral sepals, petals and labellum. We describe the new species as D. perplexum, the epithet referring to the previously perplexing properties of the material. So far, D. perplexum is only known from NE Thailand, but as the confirmed Thai localities are close to the Laotian border, future finds in Laos might be expected.

This paper examines two works of contemporary art, a sculpture-cum-civic monument and a sound installation, which respond to Goethe’s Divan. The discussion combines a critical review of the political climate within which the works were conceived with original interviews with the artists to offer close analysis of the works. I evaluate the relative impact that the Divan and scholarship on it had upon the two works. I further ask whether the artists and their sponsors felt compelled to downplay more contentious themes found in that legacy, given the ideal of intercivilizational dialogue so prominent in the discourses of German-Iranian cultural diplomacy. The paper offsets this critical reading, however, by highlighting the quite sophisticated treatments of occidental-oriental relations achieved by both works within their respective media.\ud \ud

Festulolium are hybrids between species within the Lolium and Festuca genera. They are attractive candidates for hybridisation due to their complementary characteristics in the context of forage production and environmental challenges, with Lolium exhibiting greater digestibility and Festuca possessing superior resilience to abiotic stress. To establish the extent of the representation of these characteristics in different Festulolium hybrids, a five-year field experiment was undertaken in a mild Atlantic climate. Four alternative species combinations and six pure species (controls) were evaluated for dry matter yield and persistency from 2014 to 2018, and various nutritional parameters in the first silage cut were measured from 2015 to 2017. Festulolium hybrids derived from L. multiflorum were found to group with both Lolium and Festuca pure species for a mean ground score to evaluate persistency (P < 0.05). Hybrid types of the L. perenne lineage were found to have ground score values more alike to their Lolium component and distinct from the F. pratensis pure species. In terms of dry matter yield, the majority of L. multiflorum hybrids observed formed a higher yielding group with the tetraploid L. multiflorum pure species and distinct from diploid F. pratensis pure species, whereas all other hybrid types and controls shared groups in common. For the nutrient content parameters including dry matter digestibility, water soluble sugars, and buffering capacity, Lolium pure species exhibited more favourable values, whereas hybrids were largely found to display intermediate to low values. Festuca pure species consistently exhibited poorer values with the exception of crude protein content where F. pratensis displayed the highest values and also the 2017 measurement of buffering capacity. In conclusion, the Festulolium hybrids shared characteristics with both parental types, but they often showed a greater likeness to the Lolium component.

Bioremediation is an ecologically-friendly approach for the restoration of heavy metal-contaminated sites and can exploit environmental microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi. These microorganisms are capable of removing and/or deactivating pollutants from contaminated substrates through biological and chemical reactions. Moreover, they interact with the natural flora, protecting and stimulating plant growth in these harsh conditions. In this study, we isolated a group of endophytic fungi from Agrostis stolonifera grasses growing on toxic waste from an abandoned lead mine (up to 47,990 Pb mg/kg) and identified them using DNA sequencing (nrITS barcoding). The endophytes were then tested as a consortium of eight strains in a growth chamber experiment in association with the grass Festuca arundinacea at increasing concentrations of lead in the soil to investigate how they influenced several growth parameters. As a general trend, plants treated with endophytes performed better compared to the controls at each concentration of heavy metal, with significant improvements in growth recorded at the highest concentration of lead (800 galena mg/kg). Indeed, this set of plants germinated and tillered significantly earlier compared to the control, with greater production of foliar fresh and dry biomass. Compared with the control, endophyte treated plants germinated more than 1-day earlier and produced 35.91% more plant tillers at 35 days-after-sowing. Our results demonstrate the potential of these fungal endophytes used in a consortium for establishing grassy plant species on lead contaminated soils, which may result in practical applications for heavy metal bioremediation.

Viola umphangensis S. Nansai, Srisanga & Suwanph., a new species from Thailand, is described and illustrated. Morphological, anatomical and palynological characters of V. umphangensis are compared with a similar species, V. betonicifolia Sm. An amended key to the Viola species in the Flora of Thailand account is provided.

Further to our earlier papers of typifying names in Camellia Linnaeus (1753: 698) (Zhao et al. 2017, 2018), six more names, including Calpandria lanceolata Blume (1825: 178), Camellia gauchowensis Chang (1961: 58), C. ptilophylla Chang (1981a: 98), C. salicifolia Champ. (Bentham 1851: 309), Polyspora yunnanensis Hu (1938: 135) and Thea fusiger Gagnepain (1942: 126), are lectotypified here.

In response to the impacts of climate change and global population growth on traditional food production activities, agricultural industries, and government agencies are now investing significant time and funding into researching alternative novel, sustainable and carbon friendly processes by which global food demand can be met. Application of disruptive, high yield-low cost technologies such as indoor agriculture, shift the focus of food production away from traditional intensification of land use and pesticide-based crop yield promotion, which is attributed to destruction of surrounding habitats. Organic based growth media developed for use in indoor agricultural are now a key priority to replace single use materials such as extruded plastics and rockwool. Sphagnum moss, an aquatic plant found in peatlands, is introduced here as such an alternative.

SUMMARYThe use of chemicals to fertilize crops incurs economic and environmental costs and it is widely recognized that the current level of chemical fertilizer use is unsustainable in many intensive farming systems. Any methods that can reduce fertilizer input and still maintain acceptable yields would be of great benefit to both the farmer and the environment. The use of beneficial endophytes as crop inoculants may go some way towards improving crop yields beyond that achievable using fertilizer increases alone. Field trials were conducted over two seasons on three contrasting field sites to test the effects of fungal endophytes from a wild barley relative on three barley cultivars (Mickle, Planet and Propino). Seeds were either untreated or dressed with a consortium of four endophyte strains, and three levels of nitrogen (N) were applied to both treatments: full N, 50% N and 0 N. On the field site with the lowest overall N input, the endophyte treatment with 50% N restored yield for ‘Planet’ to that associated with untreated plants receiving the full N input. On the same site and with the same cultivar, endophyte treatment increased yield by 15% under full N, and by a mean 12% for all three cultivars with 50% N input. Over both seasons and all three sites, the endophyte treatment increased yield for the cultivar Planet by a mean of 9%. For the endophyte-associated increase in the variety Planet grain yield over the untreated trials strong correlations were found between increased yield and each of low rainfall, greater evaporation and greater number of degree days above the base. Furthermore, the efficacy of the endophytes was not removed by regular foliar fungicidal treatment. These results suggest that fungal endophytes can contribute to improving barley yield grown in low rainfall areas and under a range of fertilizer input regimes, provided that endophyte treatments are applied to compatible crop cultivars and sites.

Phyllanthus kaweesakii Pornp., Chantar. & J.Parn. sp. nov. is newly described from the limestone mountain ridges in the northeast of Thailand. Comparison of morphology, anatomy, pollen morphology, and DNA sequences of this species with the most similar existing species P. mirabilis Müll.Arg. was undertaken. The results indicated that the two taxa are different in morphology, especially habit, stem base, and inflorescence, but that their pollen morphology and anatomy are similar. The molecular phylogenetic analysis, based on sequences of the plastid matK and nuclear ribosomal ITS regions, supported separation of the two taxa. This new species is described and illustrated, and its conservation status is discussed.

Taxus is a genus of trees and shrubs with high value in horticulture and medicine as a source of the anticancer drug paclitaxel. The taxonomy of the group is complex due to the lack of diagnostic morphological characters and the high degree of similarity among species. Taxus has a wide global geographic distribution and some taxonomists recognize only a single species with geographically defined subgroups, whereas others have described several species. To address these differences in taxonomic circumscription, phylogenetic analyses were conducted on DNA sequences using Maximum Likelihood, Bayesian Inference and TCS haplotype networks on single and combined gene regions obtained for the nuclear ribosomal ITS region and the plastid trnL intron and trnL-F intergenic spacer. Evidence is presented for the sister group status of Pseudotaxus to Taxus and the inclusion of Amentotaxus, Austrotaxus, Cephalotaxus and Torreya within Taxaceae. Results are consistent with the taxonomic recognition of nine species: T. baccata, T. brevifolia, T. canadensis, T. cuspidata, T. floridana, T. fuana, T. globosa, T. sumatrana and T. wallichiana, but evidence is found for less species distinction and considerable reticulation within the T. baccata, T. canadensis and T. cuspidata group. We compare the results to known taxonomy, biogeography, present new leaf anatomical data and discuss the origins of the hybrids T. &times, media and T. &times, hunnewelliana.

Significance We found that long-distance dispersal and repeated introductions by humans have shaped adaptive potential in a globally distributed invasive species. Some plant species, therefore, do not need strong demographic changes to overcome environmental constraints that exist in the native range; simply mixing genetic stock from multiple populations can provide an adaptive advantage. This work highlights the value of preventing future introduction events for problematic invasive species, even if the species already exists in an area., When plants establish outside their native range, their ability to adapt to the new environment is influenced by both demography and dispersal. However, the relative importance of these two factors is poorly understood. To quantify the influence of demography and dispersal on patterns of genetic diversity underlying adaptation, we used data from a globally distributed demographic research network comprising 35 native and 18 nonnative populations of Plantago lanceolata. Species-specific simulation experiments showed that dispersal would dilute demographic influences on genetic diversity at local scales. Populations in the native European range had strong spatial genetic structure associated with geographic distance and precipitation seasonality. In contrast, nonnative populations had weaker spatial genetic structure that was not associated with environmental gradients but with higher within-population genetic diversity. Our findings show that dispersal caused by repeated, long-distance, human-mediated introductions has allowed invasive plant populations to overcome environmental constraints on genetic diversity, even without strong demographic changes. The impact of invasive plants may, therefore, increase with repeated introductions, highlighting the need to constrain future introductions of species even if they already exist in an area.

Large collections of the forage and bioenergy grass Dactylis glomerata were made in northwest (NW) Europe along east to west and north to south clines for genetic resource conservation and to inform breeding programmes of genetic diversity, genepools, and ploidy. Leaves were sampled for genetic analysis and seed and rhizome for ex-situ conservation. Genotyping by sequencing (GBS) was used to assay nuclear DNA diversity and plastome single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) discovery was undertaken using a long-read PCR and MiSeq approach. Nuclear and plastid SNPs were analysed by principal component analysis (PCA) to compare genotypes. Flow cytometry revealed that all samples were tetraploid, but some genome size variation was recorded. GBS detected an average of approximately 10,000 to 15,000 SNPs per country sampled. The highest average number of private SNPs was recorded in Poland (median ca. 2000). Plastid DNA variation was also high (1466 SNPs, 17 SNPs/kbp). GBS data, and to a lesser extent plastome data, also show that genetic variation is structured geographically in NW Europe with loose clustering matching the country of plant origin. The results reveal extensive genetic diversity and genetic structuring in this versatile allogamous species despite lack of ploidy variation and high levels of human mediated geneflow via planting.

Sixteen lectotypifications of Asian Piper species are provided. Piper argyrites, P. baccatum, P. leptostachyum, P. majusculum, P. peepuloides, P. quinqueangulatum and P. sulcatum are accepted as species and many new synonyms are proposed. Useful diagnostic characters are described and geographical distribution data of each species are provided.

Background and Aims Improved understanding of the secondary gene pools of crops is essential for advancing genetic gain in breeding programmes. Common bean, Phaseolus vulgaris, is a staple crop with several wild relatives in its secondary gene pool. The year-long bean, P. dumosus, an important crop in Guatemala, is considered particularly closely related to P. vulgaris and a potential source of novel variation. However, the genetic diversity and relationship to other Phaseolus species of P. dumosus remain unclear. Methods We conducted the first comprehensive investigation of P. dumosus genetic diversity using both nuclear and chloroplast genome markers. Our nuclear marker set included over 700 markers present within the Phaseolus DArT (Diversity Arrays Technology) array, which we applied to P. dumosus and other relatives of P. vulgaris (including every secondary gene pool species: P. acutifolius, P. albescens, P. coccineus and P. costaricensis). Key Results Phaseolus dumosus arose from hybridization of P. vulgaris and P. coccineus, followed by at least two later hybridizations with sympatric congener populations. Existing P. dumosus collections have low genetic diversity. Conclusions The under-utilized crop P. dumosus has a complex hybrid origin. Further sampling in the region in which it arose may uncover additional germplasm for introgressing favourable traits into crops within the P. vulgaris gene pool.

The use of beneficial fungi as crop inoculants is constrained by the need for application of fungicides because the pathogen controlling fungicides often concurrently suppress the efficacy of the beneficial mycobiont. Root endophytic fungi have been shown to improve agronomic traits in spring barley and may be less sensitive to the regularly applied foliar fungicides. We hypothesised that a consortium of fungal endophyte species applied as a seed spore dressing may improve the germination and subsequent growth of barley and oat seedlings. We tested a range of seed dressings to evaluate the effects of the endophytes: untreated seed, regular fungicidal dressing (triticonazole and prochloraz), endophyte seed spore dressing and a combination of endophyte and fungicide. We found significant increases in mean barley seedling length induced by the endophytes after 28 days of seedling growth at time points of up to 6 months from seed dressing. The increases in mean seedling length were greatest for the combined fungal endophyte and fungicide treatment. For the oat cultivar, we found even more substantial endophyte associated increases in mean seedling length. These results indicate that the endophytes tested here are persistent in a seed dressing, enhance early seedling growth, are fungicide tolerant and are competent in two different genera of cereal crops.

peer-reviewed New and comprehensive collections of the perennial rhizomatous reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea) were made in NW Europe along north‐to‐south and east‐to‐west clines from Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Poland, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Rhizome, seed and leaf samples were taken for analysis and genetic resource conservation. A subsample covering the geographical range was characterized using plastid genome sequencing and SNP discovery generated using a long‐read PCR and MiSeq sequencing approach. Samples were also subject to flow cytometry and all found to be tetraploid. New sequences were assembled against a Lolium perenne (perennial ryegrass) reference genome, and an average of approximately 60% of each genome was aligned (81 064 bp). Genetic variation was high among the 48 sequenced genotypes with a total of 1793 SNPs, equating to 23 SNPs per kbp. SNPs were subject to principal coordinate and Structure analyses to detect population genetic groupings and to examine phylogeographical pattern. Results indicate substantial genetic variation and population genetic structuring of this allogamous species at a broad geographical scale in NW Europe with plastid genetic diversity organized more across an east‐to‐west than a north‐to‐south cline.

The role of sexual reproduction in magnifying genetic diversity in clonally propagated crops is now well documented. But whereas many studies have emphasized the importance of perceptual distinctiveness and its role in arousing farmers’ curiosity towards plants with unusual morphological traits, few have considered its corollary, perceptual indistinctiveness. In this study, we investigated which factors influence farmers’ behaviours towards self-sown ‘volunteer’ seedlings of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) in a cross-cultural survey in Gabon, Central Africa. Interviews revealed that farmers were seven times more likely to spare seedlings that resembled a named landrace compared to those that did not. Similarly, farmers were more likely to relax weeding pressures on cassava volunteers if they believed that volunteers were resurgences from old cuttings. The model fit significantly improved when cultural factors were accounted for, suggesting strong culture-dependent differences among communities in their perception of and attitudes towards cassava volunteers. An analysis of the structure of genetic diversity of cassava landrace populations at the community level showed that most landraces included singleton genotypes, even in villages where farmers imposed the strongest weeding pressures, suggesting that there is always some background incorporation of cassava seedlings. We show that by channelling the selective incorporation of cassava seedlings that are morphologically indistinguishable from familiar landraces, perceptual selection favors the recruitment, sometimes deliberate but more often unconscious, of new genotypes from plants germinating from seeds and contributes to balancing the disadvantages of strictly clonal propagation, while maintaining landraces within consensual combinations of perceptually distinct traits.

A nomenclatural revision of 13 species of Piper is presented (P. arcuatum, P. caninum, P. crassipes, P. griffithii, P. kurzii, P. longum, P. muricatum, P. pedicellatum, P. porphyrophyllum, P. ribesioides, P. ridleyi, P. rostratum and P. sylvaticum). A total of 23 lectotypifications are made and many names are reduced to synonymy. Diagnostic characteristics, line drawings, colour illustrations and distributional information of each species are given.

peer-reviewed Background Genomic selection (GS) can accelerate genetic gains in breeding programmes by reducing the time it takes to complete a cycle of selection. Puccinia coronata f. sp lolli (crown rust) is one of the most widespread diseases of perennial ryegrass and can lead to reductions in yield, persistency and nutritional value. Here, we used a large perennial ryegrass population to assess the accuracy of using genome wide markers to predict crown rust resistance and to investigate the factors affecting predictive ability. Results Using these data, predictive ability for crown rust resistance in the complete population reached a maximum of 0.52. Much of the predictive ability resulted from the ability of markers to capture genetic relationships among families within the training set, and reducing the marker density had little impact on predictive ability. Using permutation based variable importance measure and genome wide association studies (GWAS) to identify and rank markers enabled the identification of a small subset of SNPs that could achieve predictive abilities close to those achieved using the complete marker set. Conclusion Using a GWAS to identify and rank markers enabled a small panel of markers to be identified that could achieve higher predictive ability than the same number of randomly selected markers, and predictive abilities close to those achieved with the entire marker set. This was particularly evident in a sub-population characterised by having on-average higher genome-wide linkage disequilibirum (LD). Higher predictive abilities with selected markers over random markers suggests they are in LD with QTL. Accuracy due to genetic relationships will decay rapidly over generations whereas accuracy due to LD will persist, which is advantageous for practical breeding applications. This study assessed the genetic diversity in 928 individuals from 40 diploid populations ofLolium perenneusing nuclear simple sequence repeat markers, including 22 accessions of Irish ecotypes, seven European ecotypes and 11 released varieties. High levels of allelic and genetic diversity were determined, with intra-population variation accounting for the majority of the variation. The majority of the accessions deviated from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium and had relatively high inbreeding coefficients. Two major gene pools of ecotypic accessions were defined by unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) and PCA analyses. One of these two gene pools accounted for two-thirds of the ecotypes and included most of the current Irish and Northern Irish breeding materials and about half of the European ecotypes included in this study; these European ecotypes performed well under Irish selection conditions. Population structure and differentiation analyses using Structure analysis and analysis of molecular variance confirmed the results found in the UPGMA and PCA analyses. These results will be useful for breeders who wish to exploit specific pools from ecotype collections.
