Abstract

Within the 9th European Framework programme, since 2021 EUROfusion is operating five tokamaks under the auspices of a single Task Force called ‘Tokamak Exploitation’. The goal is to benefit from the complementary capabilities of each machine in a coordinated way and help in developing a scientific output scalable to future largre machines. The programme of this Task Force ensures that ASDEX Upgrade, MAST-U, TCV, WEST and JET (since 2022) work together to achieve the objectives of Missions 1 and 2 of the EUROfusion Roadmap: i) demonstrate plasma scenarios that increase the success margin of ITER and satisfy the requirements of DEMO and, ii) demonstrate an integrated approach that can handle the large power leaving ITER and DEMO plasmas. The Tokamak Exploitation task force has therefore organized experiments on these two missions with the goal to strengthen the physics and operational basis for the ITER baseline scenario and for exploiting the recent plasma exhaust enhancements in all four devices (PEX: Plasma EXhaust) for exploring the solution for handling heat and particle exhaust in ITER and develop the conceptual solutions for DEMO. The ITER Baseline scenario has been developed in a similar way in ASDEX Upgrade, TCV and JET. Key risks for ITER such as disruptions and run-aways have been also investigated in TCV, ASDEX Upgrade and JET. Experiments have explored successfully different divertor configurations (standard, super-X, snowflakes) in MAST-U and TCV and studied tungsten melting in WEST and ASDEX Upgrade. The input from the smaller devices to JET has also been proven successful to set-up novel control schemes on disruption avoidance and detachment.

Abstract

In 2021 JET exploited its unique capabilities to operate with T and D–T fuel with an ITER-like Be/W wall (JET-ILW). This second major JET D–T campaign (DTE2), after DTE1 in 1997, represented the culmination of a series of JET enhancements—new fusion diagnostics, new T injection capabilities, refurbishment of the T plant, increased auxiliary heating, in-vessel calibration of 14 MeV neutron yield monitors—as well as significant advances in plasma theory and modelling in the fusion community. DTE2 was complemented by a sequence of isotope physics campaigns encompassing operation in pure tritium at high T-NBI power. Carefully conducted for safe operation with tritium, the new T and D–T experiments used 1 kg of T (vs 100 g in DTE1), yielding the most fusion reactor relevant D–T plasmas to date and expanding our understanding of isotopes and D–T mixture physics. Furthermore, since the JET T and DTE2 campaigns occurred almost 25 years after the last major D–T tokamak experiment, it was also a strategic goal of the European fusion programme to refresh operational experience of a nuclear tokamak to prepare staff for ITER operation. The key physics results of the JET T and DTE2 experiments, carried out within the EUROfusion JET1 work package, are reported in this paper. Progress in the technological exploitation of JET D–T operations, development and validation of nuclear codes, neutronic tools and techniques for ITER operations carried out by EUROfusion (started within the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme and continuing under the Horizon Europe FP) are reported in (Litaudon et al Nucl. Fusion accepted), while JET experience on T and D–T operations is presented in (King et al Nucl. Fusion submitted).

Abstract

For its initial operational phase, ITER has until recently considered using non-nuclear hydrogen (H) or helium (He) plasmas to keep nuclear activation at low levels. To this end, the Tokamak Exploitation Task Force of the EUROfusion Consortium carried out dedicated experimental campaigns in He on the ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) and JET tokamaks in 2022, with particular emphasis put on the ELMy H-mode operation and plasma-wall interaction processes as well as comparison to H or deuterium (D) plasmas. Both in pure He and mixed He + H plasmas, H-mode operation could be reached but more effort was needed to obtain a stable plasma scenario than in H or D. Even if the power threshold for the LH transition was lower in He, entering the type-I ELMy regime appeared to require equally much or even more heating power than in H. Suppression of ELMs by resonant magnetic perturbations was studied on AUG but was only possible in plasmas with a He content below 19%; the reason for this unexpected behaviour remains still unclear and various theoretical approaches are being pursued to properly understand the physics behind ELM suppression. The erosion rates of tungsten (W) plasma-facing components were an order of magnitude larger than what has been reported in hydrogenic plasmas, which can be attributed to the prominent role of He ^2+ ions in the plasma. For the first time, the formation of nanoscale structures (W fuzz) was unambiguously demonstrated in H-mode He plasmas on AUG. However, no direct evidence of fuzz creation on JET was obtained despite the main conditions for its occurrence being met. The reason could be a delicate balance between W erosion by ELMs, competition between the growth and annealing of the fuzz, and coverage of the surface with co-deposits.

Abstract

This paper reports the first experiment carried out in deuterium–tritium addressing the integration of a radiative divertor for heat-load control with good confinement. Neon seeding was carried out for the first time in a D–T plasma as part of the second D–T campaign of JET with its Be/W wall environment. The technical difficulties linked to the re-ionisation heat load are reported in T and D–T. This paper compares the impact of neon seeding on D–T plasmas and their D counterpart on the divertor detachment, localisation of the radiation, scrape-off profiles, pedestal structure, edge localised modes and global confinement.

Abstract

Environmental managers need information to quickly detect which stressor combinations should be addressed to reverse river degradation across large study areas. The pivotal role of riparian vegetation in regulating thermal regimes and inputs of light, nutrients and organic matter has made it a major target of stressor-mitigation and conservation actions. However, due to the dendritic and extensive nature of river networks, field-based monitoring of local riparian conditions is expensive and time-consuming. Ongoing developments in remote sensing offer an unparalleled opportunity to address this challenge. Nonetheless, there is still a limited understanding of the capacity of remote sensing indicators to predict changes in local riparian and river conditions, urging for local calibration with in situ measurements. This study aims to evaluate the capacity of remote sensing to detect impacts on quality elements commonly used in river biomonitoring: riparian vegetation, abiotic river condition and macrophyte biomass. To this end, four remote sensing metrics were tested against field-based indicators in 50 stream locations from four river basins across the Northwest of Portugal: i) the lateral riparian continuity at reach scale (riparian forest buffer width), ii) the riparian vegetation density at reach scale (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, NDVI100m), and iii) the land use intensification at both reach (LUI100m) and iv) segment (LUI500m) scales. We found that the combination of remote sensing variables (riparian forest buffer width and the land use intensification index) correlated with riparian vegetation quality and dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentrations. We also found that the riparian vegetation density was able to predict changes in vascular plant biomass except for bryophytes. Our study provides new insights on the capacity of satellite-based indicators to assess riparian and river health, illustrating their utility for land and water managers, to identify and monitor, at a reduced cost and time, potential changes in the riparian vegetation.

Abstract

The reference ion cyclotron resonance frequency (ICRF) heating schemes for ITER deuterium–tritium (D-T) plasmas at the full magnetic field of 5.3 T are second harmonic heating of T and ^3 He minority heating. The wave-particle resonance location for these schemes coincide and are central at a wave frequency of 53 MHz at 5.3 T. Experiments have been carried out in the second major D-T campaign (DTE2) at JET, and in its prior D campaigns, to integrate these ICRF scenarios in JET high-performance plasmas and to compare their performance with the commonly used hydrogen (H) minority heating. In 50:50 D:T plasmas, up to 35% and 5% larger fusion power and diamagnetic energy content, respectively, were obtained with second harmonic heating of T as compared to H minority heating at comparable total input powers and gas injection rates. The core ion temperature was up to 30% and 20% higher with second harmonic T and ^3 He minority heating, respectively, with respect to H minority heating. These are favourable results for the use of these scenarios in ITER and future fusion reactors. According to modelling, adding ICRF heating to neutral beam injection using D and T beams resulted in a 10%–20% increase of on-axis bulk ion heating in the D-T plasmas due to its localisation in the plasma core. Central power deposition was confirmed with the break-in-slope and fast Fourier transform analysis of ion and electron temperature in response to ICRF modulation. The tail temperature of fast ICRF-accelerated tritons, their enhancement of the fusion yield and time behaviour as measured by an upgraded magnetic proton recoil spectrometer and neutral particle analyser were found in agreement with theoretical predictions. No losses of ICRF-accelerated ions were observed by fast ion detectors, which was as expected given the high plasma density of n _e ≈ 7–8 × 10 ^19 m ^−3 in the main heating phase that limited the formation of ICRF-accelerated fast ion tails. ^3 He was introduced in the machine by ^3 He gas injection, and the ^3 He concentration was measured by a high-resolution optical penning gauge in the sub-divertor region. The DTE2 experiments with ^3 He minority heating were carried with a low ^3 He concentration in the range of 2%–4% given the fact that the highest neutron rates with ^3 He minority heating in D plasmas were obtained at low ^3 He concentrations of ∼2%, which also coincided with the highest plasma diamagnetic energy content. In addition to ^3 He introduced by ^3 He gas injection, an intrinsic concentration of ^3 He of the order of 0.2%–0.4% was measured in D-T plasmas before ^3 He was introduced in the device, which is attributed to the radioactive decay of tritium to ^3 He. According to modelling, even such low intrinsic concentrations of ^3 He lead to significant changes in ICRF power partitioning during second harmonic heating of T due to absorption of up to 30% of the wave power by ^3 He.

Abstract

As part the DTE2 campaign in the JET tokamak, we conducted a parameter scan in T and D-T complementing existing pulses in H and D. For the different main ion masses, type-I ELMy H-modes at fixed plasma current and magnetic field can have the pedestal pressure varying by a factor of 4 and the total pressure changing from $\beta_{\mathrm{N}} = 1.0$ to 3.0. We investigated the pedestal and core isotope mass dependencies using this extensive data set. The pedestal shows a strong mass dependence on the density, which influences the core due to the strong coupling between both plasma regions. To better understand the causes for the observed isotope mass dependence in the pedestal, we analysed the interplay between heat and particle transport and the edge localised mode (ELM) stability. For this purpose, we developed a dynamic ELM cycle model with basic transport assumptions and a realistic neutral penetration. The temporal evolution and resulting ELM frequency introduce an additional experimental constraint that conventional quasi-stationary transport analysis cannot provide. Our model shows that a mass dependence in the ELM stability or in the transport alone cannot explain the observations. One requires a mass dependence in the ELM stability as well as one in the particle sources. The core confinement time increases with pedestal pressure for all isotope masses due to profile stiffness and electromagnetic turbulence stabilisation. Interestingly, T and D-T plasmas show an improved core confinement time compared to H and D plasmas even for matched pedestal pressures. For T, this improvement is largely due to the unique pedestal composition of higher densities and lower temperatures than H and D. With a reduced gyroBohm factor at lower temperatures, more turbulent drive in the form of steeper gradients is required to transport the same amount of heat. This picture is supported by quasilinear flux-driven modelling using TGLF -SAT2 within Astra . With the experimental boundary condition TGLF -SAT2 predicts the core profiles well for gyroBohm heat fluxes ${\gt}15$ , however, overestimates the heat and particle transport closer to the turbulent threshold.

Abstract

Earth observation data of large part of the world is available at different temporal, spectral and spatial resolution. These data can be termed as big data as they fulfil the criteria of 3 Vs of big data: Volume, Velocity and Variety. The size of image in archives are multiple petabyte size, the size is growing continuously and the data have varied resolution and usages. These big data have variety of applications including climate change study, forestry application, agricultural application and urban planning. However, these big data also possess challenge of data storage, management and high computational requirement for processing. The solution to this computational and data management requirements is database system with distributed storage and parallel computation.In this study SciDB, an array-based database is used to store, manage and process multitemporal satellite imagery. The major aim of this study is to develop SciDB based scalable solution to store and perform time series analysis on multi-temporal satellite imagery. Total 148 scene of landsat image of 10 years period between 2006 and 2016 were stored as SciDB array. The data was then retrieved, processed and visualized. This study provides solution for storage of big RS data and also provides workflow for time series analysis of remote sensing data no matter how large is the size.

Abstract

The unique arrangement of the heavy-ion beam diagnostic in ISTTOK enables one to measure the evolution of temperature, density and pressure-like profiles in normal and AC discharges. The fast chopping beam technique provided the possibility to reduce the noise on the measurements of the plasma pressure-like profile and for the precise control of the plasma column position in real time. The consequent improvements in S/N levels allowed the observation of the effects of runaway beam magnetic energy conversion into plasma local heating. In addition, it made it possible to follow the evolution of the quiescent plasma maintained during AC transitions when the plasma current is null. The use of a new operation mode in the cylindrical energy analyzer provided an improved resolution up to five times in determining the fluctuations of the plasma potential as compared to the normal operation mode. Such analyzer is extremely compact (250 mm × 250 mm × 120 mm) and provides a unique geometry in order to cover the whole plasma diameter. The detector configuration choice gives the possibility for the simultaneous measurements of plasma poloidal magnetic field, plasma pressure-like and plasma potential profiles together with their fluctuations.

Abstract

Introduction. Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the capitellum is a localized disorder of the subchondral bone, in a region with limited healing capacity. Although its aetiology is still unknown, it has been associated with repetitive microtrauma. The natural history of this disease involves the evolution for degenerative joint disease in approximately half of the patients, with early identification and treatment being critical to optimizing the outcome. Case Presentation. We present a rare case in our practice, illustrating a capitellar OCD in a fifteen-year-old White male without an identified cause of repetitive microtrauma. Conclusion. In this case prompt diagnosis and arthroscopic-assisted treatment led to a successful result.

Abstract

Understanding dune ecosystem responses to multi-scale environmental changes can provide the framework for reliable forecasts and cost-efficient protocols for detecting shifts in prevailing coastal dynamics. Based on the hypothesis that stress and disturbance interact as primary community controls in coastal dunes, we studied the fine-scale floristic assembly of foredune vegetation, in its relation to topography, along regional and local environmental gradients in the 200 km long coastline of northern Portugal, encompassing a major biogeographic transition in western Europe. Thirty topographic profiles perpendicular to the shoreline were recorded at ten sites along the regional climate gradient, and vegetation was sampled by recording the frequency of plant species along those profiles. Quantitative topographic attributes of vegetated dune profiles (e.g. length or height) exhibited wide variations relatable to differences in prevailing coastal dynamics. Metrics of taxonomic diversity (e.g. total species richness and its additive beta component) and of the functional composition of vegetation were highly correlated to attributes of dune topography. Under transgressive dynamics, vegetation profiles have fewer species, increased dominance, lower turnover rates, and lower total vegetation cover. These changes may drive a decrease in structural and functional diversity, with important consequences for resistance, resilience and other ecosystem properties. Moreover, differences in both vegetation assembly (in meta-stable dunes) and response to increased disturbance (in eroding dunes) between distinct biogeographic contexts highlight a possible decline in facilitation efficiency under extreme physical stress (i.e. under Mediterranean climate) and support the significance of functional approaches in the study of local ecosystem responses to disturbance along regional gradients. Our results strongly suggest that assessing fine-scale community assembly can provide insights on the relation between dune vegetation, environmental filters and ecosystem processes. A combination of cost-efficient indicators from dune topography and vegetation is thus suggested as a promising approach to survey, forecast and monitor changes in coastal dune ecosystems.

Abstract

Maintenance is crucial for the operation of today’s complex production systems. Insufficient maintenance due to missing spare parts, service equipment or personnel can result in breakdowns that have major negative impacts. Minimizing downtimes of the maintained system and on the other hand keeping the supply chain cost within an acceptable range can only be achieved by forecasting system breakdowns. Due to the occasional character of the maintenance demand and the broad range of affected system components, the application of “classical” forecasting methods – e.g. for finished products – does not allow for precise demand predictions and causes low forecast qualities. The objective of the Integrating Intelligent Maintenance Systems and Spare Parts Supply Chains (I2MS2C) project is improving the effectiveness and efficiency of service management operations for complex technical systems by integrating Intelligent Maintenance Systems (IMS) with planning and coordination methods and processes within the spare parts supply chain. This paper proposes an architecture for the Intelligent Maintenance System of the I2MS2C project, based on service oriented architecture using a multi agent system.

Abstract

The required heating power, P L H , to access the high confinement regime (H-mode) in tritium containing plasmas is investigated in JET with ITER-like wall at a toroidal magnetic field of B t = 1.8 T and a plasma current of I p = 1.7 MA. P L H , also referred to as the L-H power threshold, is determined in plasmas of pure tritium as well as mixtures of hydrogen with tritium (H-T) and mixtures of deuterium with tritium (D-T), and is compared to the L-H power threshold in plasmas of pure hydrogen and pure deuterium. It is found that, for otherwise constant parameters, P L H is not the same in plasmas with the same effective isotope mass, A e f f , when they differ in their isotope composition. Thus, A e f f is not sufficient to describe the isotope effect of P L H in a consistent manner for all considered isotopes and isotope mixtures. The electron temperature profiles measured at the L-H transition in the outer half of the radius are very similar for all isotopes and isotope mixtures, despite the fact that the L-H power threshold varies by a factor of about six. This finding, together with the observation of an offset linear relation between the L-H power threshold, P L H , and an effective heat diffusivity, χ e f f , indicates that the composition-dependent heat transport in the low confinement mode (L-mode) determines, how much power is needed to reach the necessary electron temperatures at the edge, and hence P L H .

Abstract

The diversity and composition of Lepidoptera communities vary along an elevational gradient, with richness and abundance generally decreasing as elevation increases. In Brazil, however, there is a lack of data on the topic and many elevation zones remain unexplored. This study aimed to examine the effect of elevation variation on the richness, frequency, abundance, and composition of Lepidoptera in an Atlantic Forest region in southern Minas Gerais State, Brazil, and we also present the first species list of Lepidoptera of the Fernão Dias Environmental Protection Area. The study was conducted between October 2019 and March 2020, and sampling was performed with the same sampling effort at three elevation levels by active (nets) and passive (bait trap) methods. A total of 622 Lepidoptera individuals, belonging to 154 species, were sampled. The family Nymphalidae exhibited thehighest richness and abundance. The highest elevation zone showed the greatest number of exclusive species. Richness and abundance were highest at middle elevation, but differences between elevation zones were not statistically significant. Richness estimators indicated a mean sampling efficiency of 64.97%. In contrast to the expected pattern, species richness was highest in middle and high elevation zones, which might reflect the greater degree of conservation of these areas. The findings reported here contribute to a better understanding of the diversity of Lepidoptera in higher elevation zones of Atlantic Forest regions in Brazil.

37. Characterization of sudden death etiologies in a Portuguese population younger than 40 years-old

Abstract

Background The incidence and pathogenesis of sudden death (SD) in the young adult population in Portugal remains to be clarified. Some of the causes are known to be hereditary and a better understanding of these can have implications on the development of a national screening program for relatives of SD victims. Purpose To describe the leading causes of sudden cardiac and non-cardiac death in a young adult Portuguese population (≤40 years-old). Methods The authors retrospectively reviewed cases from a national database regarding individuals who underwent an autopsy, between 2012 and 2016, at 6 districts of mainland Portugal plus the islands. All young adults (1–40 years-old) who had a sudden unexpected death were included and violent deaths were excluded. This study was approved by the Institute Ethics Committee. We reviewed the autopsy files and collected demographic, clinical, necropsic, anatomopathological and toxicological data from each case. We performed statistical analysis using Stata 13.0 software. Results During a 5-year period, out of an estimated total of 2101 deaths in ages 1 to 40, 175 SD were identified. SD victims had a mean age of 32±9 years-old, the majority being of male gender (69%,n=120). There were 115 (66%) cases of SD of confirmed cardiac origin (see Table 1). The remaining causes were respiratory (18%), cerebral (7%), digestive (6%), endocrinologic (2%), urinary (1%), infectious (1%). The most frequent cardiac cause being coronary atherosclerosis (n=40,35%), which included lesions with estimated luminal narrowing >75% and/or documented type 1 acute myocardial infarction. These patients were older (31±8 vs 35±4, p Conclusions During a 5-year period, the cumulative incidence of SD in a region of Portugal is very low (n=175), cardiac causes being present in 66% of the cases. Aim: Intraspecific diversity is a significant component of adaptive potential, and thus, it is important to identify the evolutionary processes that have and will continue to shape the molecular diversity of natural populations. This study aims to untangle the possible drivers of intraspecific molecular diversity by testing whether patterns of historical climatic stability or contemporary range position correlate with molecular diversity.Location: South African coastline.Taxa: The cape urchin (Parechinus angulosus), common shore crab (Cyclograpsus punctatus) and granular limpet (Scutellastra granularis).Methods: Species distributions were hindcasted to the Last Glacial Maximum to assess the biogeography of the study species. Linear models were built to compare the relationships between historical climatic stability or contemporary distributional ranges with extant genetic (mtDNA) and genomic (SNP) diversity.Results: We found large differences in the historical ranges among species and time periods. Regions of higher habitat stability corresponded to regions of higher molecular diversity, but historical climatic variability was not a predictor of molecular diversity within linear models. Lower genetic diversity values, and higher genetic differentiation, were detected in edge populations, but this was not consistent across marker type or species.Main conclusions: Both historical and contemporary processes are potentially driving patterns of diversity, but a large portion of the variation in molecular diversity remains unexplained. Our findings suggest that marine species within cool-temperate bioregions in the Southern Hemisphere may have more complex biogeographic and evolutionary histories than terrestrial taxa and/or coastal species within northern, formerly glaciated regions.

42. Developing a Test Protocol to Determine Packing Performance in a Soot Blower

Abstract

Soot deposit accumulation on heat transfer tubes and surfaces in recovery boilers reduces thermal performance, compromising thus the efficiency and life of the equipment. A soot blower is employed to remove these by-products to maintain boilers within design conditions. This specialized device has a seal between its tubes to maintain fluid pressure to clean the heating pipes and inside surface. Nevertheless, sealing can be a challenge due to its large displacement amplitude, the reciprocating movement, and the sudden change of temperature and pressure. Many different solutions are available in the market that offers viable sealing methods, but there is no test method to classify them. This work proposes a soot blower test protocol to evaluate the sealing solutions available. Comparative results for the different seal types are presented.

Abstract

In this study, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/surfactant films were prepared by casting technique. Two nonionic surfactants with different alkyl chain lenghts (Tween 20 and Tween 40) were used. PVA/Tween 20 and PVA/Tween 40 films were characterized by means of Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). FTIR spectra of PVA/Tween films indicated the presence of hydrogen bond interactions between the Tween surfactants and PVA. XRD results showed that the incorporation of Tween 20 and 40 into the PVA film decreased the crystallinity of PVA.TGA curves revealed an increase in the thermal stability of PVA film in the presence of the surfactants. Abstract

Objectives: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a common health problem and in most patients it is not possible to identify a specific cause (non-specific CLBP). Spondyloarthritis is a musculoskeletal disorder characterized by (often inflammatory) back pain and spinal stiffness. The impact of CLBP and spondyloarthritis on patients’ physical function may be different. This study aims to compare physical disability in patients with spondyloarthritis and CLBP, in a population-based setting. Furthermore, we aim to identify modifiable risk factors for physical disability among these two populations. Methods: Data from EpiReumaPt, a national health cohort with 10 661 individuals, conducted from September 2011 to December 2013, was used. Physical function was accessed by the Health Assessment Questionnaire Disability Index (HAQ-DI) and by the physical function dimension of the 36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36). Univariable and multivariable linear regression analyses were used to assess the differences between groups. Factors associated with physical disability were explored for both diseases. Results: We evaluated 92 patients with spondyloarthritis, 1376 patients with CLBP and 679 subjects without rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs). Spondyloarthritis and CLBP patients reported significantly higher levels of disability in HAQ-DI (b=0.33; p<0.001 and b=0.20; p<0.001, respectively) than subjects without RMDs. In comparison to CLBP patients, spondyloarthritis patients reported higher disability (b=0.14; p=0.03). The physical domains of SF-36, bodily pain and general health, where more affected in spondyloarthritis patients than in CLBP patients (b=-6.61; p=0.02 and b=-5.94; p=0.001, respectively). Spondyloarthritis and CLBP patients had a worse physical summary score (PCS) than mental summary score (MCS), and only PCS was significantly worse in comparison to subjects without RMDs. Factors associated with physical disability in CLBP were low back pain intensity, older age, obesity, multimorbidity, and retirement. Similarly, in spondyloarthritis physical disability was associated with retirement and multimorbidity. Factors associated with lower disability were alcohol consumption and male gender in CLBP, and regular physical exercise was associated with lower disability in both disorders. Conclusions: In this nationwide cohort, spondyloarthritis and CLBP patients reported significant physical disability. Regular physical exercise was associated with lower disability in both diseases. The constant loss of functional capacity due to aging is a serious problem that can severely worsen the quality of life. Among the possible treatments, muscles electrostimulation can be a viable option because it is cheap and easy to access. With the evolution of wearable devices and the Internet of Things, this paper proposes a system architecture that enables an electrostimulation treatment to be performed at the patient’s home. For that, a scenario is presented in which the physiotherapist sets the treatment parameters online and the patient performs the electrostimulation sessions using a wearable with biofeedback sensors. To test the proposed architecture, a prototype capable of simulating a muscle rehabilitation treatment was implemented. Abstract

Family reunification is a complex process and is consensually considered the best solution for children in care, as soon as the family has changed the dysfunctional patterns that prevent child safety and well-being. Intervention throughout the entire process is crucial to the success of family reunification. This study aimed to explore and understand child protection professionals’ views on factors influencing (un)successful family reunification trajectories. Using a qualitative design, 33 Portuguese child protection professionals participated in five focus groups. The thematic analysis revealed a set of influential factors within three different systemic levels: child, family, and child welfare system. The latter level was clearly predominant, pointing to the powerful role of the intervention as a vehicle for successful family reunification. The results showed the relevance attributed by the professionals to some main intervention guidelines, children–professionals’ relationships, multisystemic assessment and intervention, coordinated work of intervention teams, and sufficient time between the court decision and the child’s re-entry into the family home. The need for early intervention and its continuity after the child’s reintegration into the home also emerged as relevant factors. This study provides in-depth knowledge of professionals’ views on the intervention process, thus contributing to a comprehensive understanding of (un)successful family reunification trajectories.
