The Siberian Arctic is warming rapidly, causing permafrost to thaw and altering the biogeochemistry of aquatic environments, with cascading effects on the coastal and shelf ecosystems of the Arctic Ocean. The Lena River, one of the largest Arctic rivers, drains a catchment dominated by permafrost. Baseline discharge biogeochemistry data are necessary to understand present and future changes in land-to-ocean fluxes. Here, we present a high-frequency 4.5-year-long dataset from a sampling program of the Lena River's biogeochemistry, spanning April 2018 to August 2022. The dataset comprises 587 sampling events and measurements of various parameters, including water temperature, electrical conductivity, stable oxygen and hydrogen isotopes, dissolved organic carbon concentration and 14C, colored and fluorescent dissolved organic matter, dissolved inorganic and total nutrients, and dissolved elemental and ion concentrations. Sampling consistency and continuity and data quality were ensured through simple sampling protocols, real-time communication, and collaboration with local and international partners. The data are available as a collection of datasets separated by parameter groups and periods at https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.913197 (Juhls et al., 2020b). To our knowledge, this dataset provides an unprecedented temporal resolution of an Arctic river's biogeochemistry. This makes it a unique baseline on which future environmental changes, including changes in river hydrology, at temporal scales from precipitation event to seasonal to interannual can be detected.

Measurements of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), nitrogen (DON), and phosphorus (DOP) concentrations are used to characterize the dissolved organic matter (DOM) pool and are important components of biogeochemical cycling in the coastal ocean. Here, we present the first edition of a global database (CoastDOM v1; available at https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.964012, Lønborg et al., 2023) compiling previously published and unpublished measurements of DOC, DON, and DOP in coastal waters. These data are complemented by hydrographic data such as temperature and salinity and, to the extent possible, other biogeochemical variables (e.g. chlorophyll a, inorganic nutrients) and the inorganic carbon system (e.g. dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity). Overall, CoastDOM v1 includes observations of concentrations from all continents. However, most data were collected in the Northern Hemisphere, with a clear gap in DOM measurements from the Southern Hemisphere. The data included were collected from 1978 to 2022 and consist of 62 338 data points for DOC, 20 356 for DON, and 13 533 for DOP. The number of measurements decreases progressively in the sequence DOC > DON > DOP, reflecting both differences in the maturity of the analytical methods and the greater focus on carbon cycling by the aquatic science community. The global database shows that the average DOC concentration in coastal waters (average ± standard deviation (SD): 182±314 µmol C L−1; median: 103 µmol C L−1) is 13-fold higher than the average coastal DON concentration (13.6±30.4 µmol N L−1; median: 8.0 µmol N L−1), which is itself 39-fold higher than the average coastal DOP concentration (0.34±1.11 µmol P L−1; median: 0.18 µmol P L−1). This dataset will be useful for identifying global spatial and temporal patterns in DOM and will help facilitate the reuse of DOC, DON, and DOP data in studies aimed at better characterizing local biogeochemical processes; closing nutrient budgets; estimating carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorous pools; and establishing a baseline for modelling future changes in coastal waters.

Abstract Urban environments present less environmental heterogeneity in relation to the natural ones, affecting the biodiversity of bats and the ecological processes in which they participate. In this way, we will identify how urbanization influences the structure of bat communities in the municipality of Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil. We compared species composition, guilds and bat richness in a gradient that crossed urban, semi-urban and natural areas in the municipality of Goiânia, contained in the Cerrado biome. We captured a total of 775 bats of 16 species distributed in three families. Urban areas had a higher species abundance, while semi-urban areas had a higher species richness. The three types of environments have different compositions, the urban one being more homogeneous, the fauna in these areas is composed of generalist species, which benefit from this process. The diversity present in semi-urban areas is a consequence of the intersection between urban and natural fauna, which is why urban expansion needs to occur in a planned manner to minimize the impacts of this process and ensure the maintenance of biodiversity.

Abstract Background A defecation disorder (DD) is a difficulty in evacuation documented by physiological exams. However, this physiological evaluation can be cumbersome, inaccessible and costly. Three “low-cost” tools to evaluate DD—a clinical DD score, the balloon expulsion test (BET) and a digital rectal examination (DRE) score were evaluated as separate or combined tests for DD screening. Methods This prospective study occurred between January 2015 and March 2019 in the Gastroenterology Department of a tertiary hospital. Besides the gold standard physiological tests, constipated patients answered the clinical DD score and were evaluated by DRE and BET [standard and variable volume (VV)]. Results From 98 constipated patients, 35 (38.9%) were diagnosed with DD according to Rome IV criteria, mainly female (n = 30, 86%) with a median age of 60 years old. The clinical DD score revealed an AUC of 0.417 (SE = 0.07, p = 0.191). The DRE score displayed an AUC of 0.56 (SE = 0.063, p = 0.301). The standard BET displayed a sensitivity of 86%, specificity of 58%, positive predictive value (PPV) of 57% and negative predictive value (NPV) of 86%. The sequential VVBET followed by standard BET improved the BET performance regarding the evaluation of DD, with a sensitivity of 86%, specificity of 67%, PPV of 63% and NPV of 87%. The sequential BET had an OR 8.942, p > 0.001, CI 3.18–25.14, revealing to be the most significant predictor for DD screening. Conclusion The sequential BET is a low cost, well-performing DD screening tool, appropriate to the Primary Care Setting.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are the main energy storage system used in portable devices. Their outstanding characteristics allied to the growing market of portable devices and electric vehicles provides batteries an increasing trend over the next years. During the past decade, improved materials for LIBs have been developed, with less attention being focused on the manufacturing process, despite its critical influence in battery performance. In the present work, the main electrode manufacturing steps are discussed together with their influence on electrode morphology and interface properties, influencing in turn parameters such as porosity, tortuosity or effective transport coefficient and, therefore, battery performance. A state of art on the main steps of the electrode manufacturing process is presented, together with future directions with respect to LIBs fabrication.

Oceanic emissions of the climate-relevant trace gases carbonyl sulfide (OCS) and carbon disulfide (CS2) are a major source to their atmospheric budget. Their current and future emission estimates are still uncertain due to incomplete process understanding and therefore inexact quantification across different biogeochemical regimes. Here we present the first concurrent measurements of both gases together with related fractions of the dissolved organic matter (DOM) pool, i.e., solid-phase extractable dissolved organic sulfur (DOSSPE, n=24, 0.16±0.04 µmol L−1), chromophoric (CDOM, n=76, 0.152±0.03), and fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM, n=35), from the Peruvian upwelling region (Guayaquil, Ecuador to Antofagasta, Chile, October 2015). OCS was measured continuously with an equilibrator connected to an off-axis integrated cavity output spectrometer at the surface (29.8±19.8 pmol L−1) and at four profiles ranging down to 136 m. CS2 was measured at the surface (n=143, 17.8±9.0 pmol L−1) and below, ranging down to 1000 m (24 profiles). These observations were used to estimate in situ production rates and identify their drivers. We find different limiting factors of marine photoproduction: while OCS production is limited by the humic-like DOM fraction that can act as a photosensitizer, high CS2 production coincides with high DOSSPE concentration. Quantifying OCS photoproduction using a specific humic-like FDOM component as proxy, together with an updated parameterization for dark production, improves agreement with observations in a 1-D biogeochemical model. Our results will help to better predict oceanic concentrations and emissions of both gases on regional and, potentially, global scales.

Resumo A força de interação magnética entre ímãs é um efeito curioso, que prende a atenção de pessoas das mais variadas faixas etárias. Se por um lado, sua descrição é pesada demais para ser apresentada em cursos de física básica, por outro, restringindo alguns aspectos dos magnetos, a força admite um comportamento descrito analiticamente por um decaimento exponencial com a distância entre os ímãs. Apresentamos, então, neste trabalho uma sequência de experimentos que nos permite estimar a força de repulsão entre pares de ímãs cilíndricos iguais. Esquecendo por um momento este lado pragmático, discutimos também como um campo magnético admite ser representado por um campo de vetores axiais.

Point cloud datasets provided by LiDAR have become an integral part in many research fields including archaeology, forestry, and ecology. Facilitated by technological advances, the volume of these datasets has steadily increased, with modern airborne laser scanning surveys now providing high-resolution, (super-)national scale, multi-terabyte point clouds. However, their wider scientific exploitation is hindered by the scarcity of open source software tools capable of handling the challenges of accessing, processing, and extracting meaningful information from massive datasets, as well as by the domain-specificity of existing tools. Here we present Laserchicken, a user-extendable, cross-platform Python tool for extracting statistical properties of flexibly defined subsets of point cloud data, aimed at enabling efficient, scalable, distributed processing of multi-terabyte datasets. Background The term meningoencephalocele (MEC) describes a herniation of cerebral tissue and meninges through a defect in the cranium, whereas a meningocele (MC) is a herniation of the meninges alone. Hypothesis/Objectives To describe the clinical features, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics, and outcomes of dogs with cranial MC and MEC. Animals Twenty‐two client‐owned dogs diagnosed with cranial MC or MEC. Methods Multicentric retrospective descriptive study. Clinical records of 13 institutions were reviewed. Signalment, clinical history, neurologic findings and MRI characteristics as well as treatment and outcome were recorded and evaluated. Results Most affected dogs were presented at a young age (median, 6.5 months; range, 1 month – 8 years). The most common presenting complaints were seizures and behavioral abnormalities. Intranasal MEC was more common than parietal MC. Magnetic resonance imaging identified meningeal enhancement of the protruded tissue in 77% of the cases. Porencephaly was seen in all cases with parietal MC. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis identified mild abnormalities in 4 of 11 cases. Surgery was not performed in any affected dog. Seventeen patients were treated medically, and seizures were adequately controlled with anti‐epileptic drugs in 10 dogs. Dogs with intranasal MEC and mild neurologic signs had a fair prognosis with medical treatment. Conclusion and clinical importance Although uncommon, MC and MEC should be considered as a differential diagnosis in young dogs presenting with seizures or alterations in behavior. Medical treatment is a valid option with a fair prognosis when the neurologic signs are mild.

The aim of this study was to verify the influence of a six-month detraining program on shoulders flexibility, after a period of specific training by means of a neuroprioceptive facilitation technique named as Scientific Stretching for Sport (3S). This research consists of a case report of a 62 year-old subject. First of all, the subject attended a 2-month period of flexibility training, by means of 3S technique. After that, the subject stayed away from the training for a period of six months. The flexibility was measured by goniometer, both at baseline (beginning of the detraining period) and six months after. The results showed decrease in flexibility on all the movements, except for right shoulder extension and medial rotation. A variety of putative mechanisms may explain the flexibility decrement with detraining, such as a reduction in conjuntive extensibility.

A remarkable histopathological picture of one asymptomatic dog naturally infected with Leishmania infantum (syn. chagasi) has been presented. Intracellular parasites were ease found in macrophages of all exanimated organs, especially in skin. Embedded paraffin tissues of liver, spleen, axillary and popliteal lymph nodes, and skin (ear, muzzle and abdomen) were stained by hematoxylin and eosin and by immunocytochemical reaction (streptoavidin-peroxidase method) to detect parasites. All organs showed an intense parasitism associated to severe pathological changes. All lymph nodes had conspicuous histological architecture alterations. Lymphocytes were replaced by macrophages stuffed with an intense number of amastigotes forms of Leishmania. The lymphoid nodules (without germinal centers) and the mantle zones in the cortex that surround the follicles were markedly attenuated. Livers showed small intralobular granulomas composed by macrophages loaded with amastigotes. Spleens had an intense depression of the white pulp whereas the lymphocytes were replaced by parasitized macrophages. All fragments of different anatomical region of skin (ear, muzzle and abdomen) showed a diffuse chronic inflammation. The cellular exudate was composed by macrophages, plasmocytes and lymphocytes. Macrophages loaded with amastigotes were ease found in all tissue fragments, but more intense in ear and muzzle. Thus, this fact enhances the importance of asymptomatic dogs in the epidemiology of visceral leishmaniasis.Relata-se um quadro histológico caracterizado por lesões acentuadas em tecidos de um cão assintomático naturalmente infectado por Leishmania infantum (sin. chagasi). Cortes parafinados de fígado, baço, linfonodos (cervical, axilar e poplíteo) e pele (orelha, espelho nasal e abdome) foram corados pela técnica de hematoxilina-eosina e pela técnica imunoistoquímica de estreptoavidina-peroxidase para detecção de formas amastigotas de Leishmania. Os linfonodos apresentaram profundas alterações estruturais. Em todos observou-se depleção linfocitária, principalmente da córtex, com substituição dos linfócitos por macrófagos abarrotados de formas amastigotas de Leishmania. No fígado, observou-se a presença de pequenos granulomas intralobulares compostos por macrófagos intensamente parasitados, plasmócitos e raros linfócitos. No baço, a alteração marcante foi a depressão da polpa branca. Os folículos linfóides foram substituídos por macrófagos intensamente parasitados com as formas amastigotas de Leishmania. Fragmentos de pele de orelha, espelho nasal e abdome apresentaram reação inflamatória crônica e difusa com exsudato celular composto por macrófagos, plasmócitos e linfócitos. Parasitos foram detectados em todos os tecidos estudados e mais numerosos na pele da orelha e focinho. Os achados mostram a importância de cães assintomáticos na epidemiologia da leishmaniose visceral.

Cytomegalovirus is a double stranded DNA virus that can be present in nearly all organs and body fluids. The primary infection is usually asymptomatic in the immunocompetent host and it is common among adolescents and young adults. The symptomatic form appears, in the majority of cases, as a mononucleosis syndrome with full recovery without specific treatment. We report a case of a 25 years old woman who presented with hepatitis due to CMV infection and history of omalizumab administration one month earlier. This recombinant monoclonal antibody is used to control refractory asthma and chronic spontaneous urticarial as it inhibits human IgE. Despite that, the long course of the disease lead us to initiate treatment with valganciclovir. The improvement after that was rapid and complete.

Purpose. Previous research indicates that physical education (PE) classes frequently fail to meet the recommended levels of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA). This study aimed to compare the intensity levels achieved through different PE strategies, and, as a secondary objective, to evaluate students' perceptions of fun, motivation, and engagement. Materials and Methods. A total of 52 students (23 girls and 29 boys) participated in the study. The children were healthy and none of them were taking medication continuously or presented any orthopedic physical inability that would prevent them from performing the tests. All the children attended three PE classes on separate days; a recreational strategy, a circuit-based high-intensity interval training (circuit/HIIT) class, and a traditional class. All classes included games and activity content that followed the country's guidelines. Intensity levels were measured using portable heart rate (HR) monitors, and perceived exertion was assessed using the rate of perceived exertion (RPE) scale. For comparisons between each class strategy, the Kruskal-Wallis test and Dunn's test were used to identify significant differences (P<0.05). Qualitative data are presented as percentages of interview responses. Results. All strategies led to a level of engagement in MVPA for more than 50% of the total class duration. The circuit/HIIT and recreational strategies demonstrated significantly higher proportions of time spent in MVPA compared to the traditional class (P<0.01). The qualitative results showed that the recreational class received the highest number of positive responses, followed by the traditional class, while the circuit/HIIT received fewer positive responses. In addition, the RPE values aligned with the quantitative HR results, reflecting the class intensities. Conclusion: The circuit/HIIT strategy achieved the highest percentage (93.2%) of time in MVPA, followed by the recreational (91.8%) and traditional classes (77.6%). The results highlight the excellent percentage of time spent in MVPA in the recreational strategy, and qualitatively, the higher levels of fun, motivation, and engagement among students in this model. Thus, the recreational strategy led to excellent intensity of activity during the class, as well as positive responses in relation to the students' motivation and engagement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to examine the effects of concomitant benzodiazepines and antidepressants long-term use on perspective-taking, we analyzed behavioral and neural changes on perspective-taking ability using event-related potentials. Methods: To this purpose, 13 long-term concomitant benzodiazepines and antidepressants users and 13 healthy controls performed a task designed to assess affective perspective-taking with simultaneous EEG recording. Results: The behavioral results revealed similar performance between groups. The neural results showed no significant differences between groups for the N170 and late positive potential (LPP) components. These results seem to suggest that long-term use of benzodiazepines and antidepressants together does not affect perspective-taking abilities nor the processing of related information. Conclusions: The concomitant benzodiazepines and antidepressants long-term use seem to preserve the perspective-taking ability of social cognition.
