Abstract

Abstract JSNS $$^2$$ 2 (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) is an experiment that searches for sterile neutrinos via the observation of $$\bar{\nu }_{\mu } \rightarrow \bar{\nu }_{e}$$ ν ¯ μ → ν ¯ e appearance oscillations using muon decay-at-rest neutrinos. The JSNS $$^2$$ 2 experiment performed data taking from 2021. In this manuscript, a study of the accidental background is presented. The rate of the accidental background is ( $$9.29\pm 0.39) \times 10^{-8}$$ 9.29 ± 0.39 ) × 10 - 8 /spill with 0.75 MW beam power and comparable to the expected number of signal events.

Abstract

Among multimessenger observations of the next Galactic core-collapse supernova, Super-Kamiokande (SK) plays a critical role in detecting the emitted supernova neutrinos, determining the direction to the supernova (SN), and notifying the astronomical community of these observations in advance of the optical signal. In 2022, SK has increased the gadolinium dissolved in its water target (SK-Gd) and has achieved a Gd concentration of 0.033%, resulting in enhanced neutron detection capability, which in turn enables more accurate determination of the supernova direction. Accordingly, SK-Gd’s real-time supernova monitoring system has been upgraded. SK_SN Notice, a warning system that works together with this monitoring system, was released on 2021 December 13, and is available through GCN Notices. When the monitoring system detects an SN-like burst of events, SK_SN Notice will automatically distribute an alarm with the reconstructed direction to the supernova candidate within a few minutes. In this paper, we present a systematic study of SK-Gd’s response to a simulated Galactic SN. Assuming a supernova situated at 10 kpc, neutrino fluxes from six supernova models are used to characterize SK-Gd’s pointing accuracy using the same tools as the online monitoring system. The pointing accuracy is found to vary from 3° to 7° depending on the models. However, if the supernova is closer than 10 kpc, SK_SN Notice can issue an alarm with three-degree accuracy, which will benefit follow-up observations by optical telescopes with large fields of view.

Before dedicated data taking in the first-half of 2021, we performed a commissioning run for 10 days in June 2020. Using the data obtained in this commissioning run, in this paper, we present an estimate of the correlated background which imitates the $${\bar{\nu }}_{e}$$ ν ¯ e signal in a sterile neutrino search. In addition, in order to demonstrate future prospects of the JSNS $$^2$$ 2 experiment, possible pulse shape discrimination improvements towards reducing cosmic ray induced fast neutron background are described.

Abstract

We report the first search result for the flux of astrophysical electron antineutrinos for energies ${ \mathcal O }(10)\,\mathrm{MeV}$ in the gadolinium-loaded Super-Kamiokande (SK) detector. In 2020 June, gadolinium was introduced to the ultrapure water of the SK detector in order to detect neutrons more efficiently. In this new experimental phase, SK-Gd, we can search for electron antineutrinos via inverse beta decay with efficient background rejection thanks to the high efficiency of the neutron tagging technique. In this paper, we report the result for the initial stage of SK-Gd, during 2020 August 26, and 2022 June 1 with a 22.5 × 552 kton · day exposure at 0.01% Gd mass concentration. No significant excess over the expected background in the observed events is found for the neutrino energies below 31.3 MeV. Thus, the flux upper limits are placed at the 90% confidence level. The limits and sensitivities are already comparable with the previous SK result with pure water (22.5 × 2970 kton · day) owing to the enhanced neutron tagging. Operation with Gd increased to 0.03% started in 2022 June.

Abstract

Super-Kamiokande has been searching for neutrino bursts characteristic of core-collapse supernovae continuously, in real time, since the start of operations in 1996. The present work focuses on detecting more distant supernovae whose event rate may be too small to trigger in real time, but may be identified using an offline approach. The analysis of data collected from 2008 to 2018 found no evidence of distant supernovae bursts. This establishes an upper limit of 0.29 yr−1 on the rate of core-collapse supernovae out to 100 kpc at 90% C.L. For supernovae that fail to explode and collapse directly to black holes the limit reaches to 300 kpc.

Abstract

The Super-Kamiokande detector can be used to search for neutrinos in time coincidence with gravitational waves detected by the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration (LVC). Both low-energy ($7-100$ MeV) and high-energy ($0.1-10^5$ GeV) samples were analyzed in order to cover a very wide neutrino spectrum. Follow-ups of 36 (out of 39) gravitational waves reported in the GWTC-2 catalog were examined; no significant excess above the background was observed, with 10 (24) observed neutrinos compared with 4.8 (25.0) expected events in the high-energy (low-energy) samples. A statistical approach was used to compute the significance of potential coincidences. For each observation, p-values were estimated using neutrino direction and LVC sky map ; the most significant event (GW190602_175927) is associated with a post-trial p-value of $7.8\%$ ($1.4\sigma$). Additionally, flux limits were computed independently for each sample and by combining the samples. The energy emitted as neutrinos by the identified gravitational wave sources was constrained, both for given flavors and for all-flavors assuming equipartition between the different flavors, independently for each trigger and by combining sources of the same nature., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures. v2: adding corrections from The Astrophysical Journal review

Abstract

The radioactivity background are among the most dangerous background for low energy neutrino analysis in Super-Kamiokande (SK), like the solar neutrino analysis. Among them, the main contribution is coming from $^{222}$Rn, which is spread in the detector's water due to the water source and to the photo multiplier (PMT) emanations. Up to now, its exact distribution in the detector was not known. Using our knowledge of the radon concentration in the detector water, and the SK-IV solar data, we developed a model of the radon distribution in the detector. The uncertainty on the Rn concentration associated with this model was estimated to be $\sim0.1$ mBq/m$^{3}$

Abstract

A search for neutrinos produced in coincidence with Gamma-Ray Bursts(GRB) was conducted with the Super-Kamiokande (SK) detector. Between December 2008 and March 2017, the Gamma-ray Coordinates Network recorded 2208 GRBs that occurred during normal SK operation. Several time windows around each GRB were used to search for coincident neutrino events. No statistically significant signal in excess of the estimated backgrounds was detected. The $\bar\nu_e$ fluence in the range from 8 MeV to 100 MeV in positron total energy for $\bar\nu_e+p\rightarrow e^{+}+n$ was found to be less than $\rm 5.07\times10^5$ cm$^{-2}$ per GRB in 90\% C.L. Upper bounds on the fluence as a function of neutrino energy were also obtained., Comment: 29 pages, 16 figures, 5 tables, accepted by PTEP

Abstract

Super-Kamiokande (SK) is a 50-kt water Cherenkov detector, instrumented with $\sim 13$k photo-multipliers and running since 1996. It is sensitive to neutrinos with energies ranging from 4.5 MeV to several TeV. A new framework has been developed for the follow-up of gravitational wave (GW) alerts issued by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration (LVC). Neutrinos are searched for, using a 1000-second time window centered on the alert time and in both SK low-energy and high-energy samples. Such observation can then be used to constrain the neutrino emission from the GW source. The significance of potential signals has been obtained by comparing neutrino direction with the localization of the GW. The computation of limits on incoming neutrino flux and on the total energy emitted in neutrinos by the source has been performed for the different neutrino flavors. The results using the LVC GWTC-2 catalog (covering O3a period) are presented, as well as the outlooks for the future real-time public release of follow-ups for the O4 period (in 2022) and beyond.

Abstract

We have searched for proton decay via p→e+π0 and p→μ+π0 modes with the enlarged fiducial volume data of Super-Kamiokande from April 1996 to May 2018, which corresponds to 450 kton·years exposure. We have accumulated about 25% more livetime and enlarged the fiducial volume of the Super-Kamiokande detector from 22.5 kton to 27.2 kton for this analysis, so that 144 kton·years of data, including 78 kton·years of additional fiducial volume data, has been newly analyzed. No candidates have been found for p→e+π0 and one candidate remains for p→μ+π0 in the conventional 22.5 kton fiducial volume and it is consistent with the atmospheric neutrino background prediction. We set lower limits on the partial lifetime for each of these modes: τ/B(p→e+π0)>2.4×1034 years and τ/B(p→μ+π0)>1.6×1034 years at 90% confidence level.

Abstract

Neutral current (NC) interactions of atmospheric neutrinos on oxygen form one of the major backgrounds in the search for supernova relic neutrinos with water-based Cherenkov detectors. The NC channel is dominated by neutrino quasi-elastic (NCQE) scattering off nucleons inside $^{16}$O nuclei. In this paper we report the first measurement of NCQE cross section using atmospheric neutrinos at Super-Kamiokande (SK). The measurement used 2,778 live days of SK-IV data with a fiducial volume of 22.5 kiloton water. Within the visible energy window of 7.5-29.5 MeV, we observed $117$ events compared to the expected $71.9$ NCQE signal and $53.1$ background events. Weighted by the atmospheric neutrino spectrum from 160 MeV to 10 GeV, the flux averaged NCQE cross section is measured to be $(1.01\pm0.17(\text{stat.})^{+0.78}_{-0.30}(\text{sys.}))\times10^{-38}$ cm$^2$., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, submitted to PRD

Abstract

The RENO experiment has been in operation since August 2011 to measure reactor antineutrino disappearance using identical near and far detectors. For accurate measurements of neutrino mixing parameters and efficient data taking, it is crucial to monitor and control the detector in real time. Environmental conditions also need to be monitored for stable operation of detectors as well as for safety reasons. In this paper, we report the design, hardware, operation, and performance of the slow control system.

Abstract

We have searched for proton decays into a charged antilepton (e+, μ+) plus a meson (η, ρ0, ω) and for neutron decays into a charged antilepton (e+, μ+) plus a meson (π−, ρ−) using Super-Kamiokande I-IV data, corresponding to 0.316 megaton⋅years of exposure. This measurement updates the previous published result by using 2.26 times more data and improved analysis methods. No significant evidence for nucleon decay is observed and lower limits on the partial lifetime of the nucleon are obtained. The limits range from 3×1031 to 1×1034 years at 90% confidence level, depending on the decay mode.

Abstract

We have searched for proton decay via p→e+π0 and p→μ+π0 using Super-Kamiokande data from April 1996 to March 2015, 0.306 megaton·years exposure in total. The atmospheric neutrino background rate in Super-Kamiokande IV is reduced to almost half that of phase I-III by tagging neutrons associated with neutrino interactions. The reach of the proton lifetime is further enhanced by introducing new signal criteria that select the decay of a proton in a hydrogen atom. No candidates were seen in the p→e+π0 search. Two candidates that passed all of the selection criteria for p→μ+π0 have been observed, but these are consistent with the expected number of background events of 0.87. Lower limits on the proton lifetime are set at τ/B(p→e+π0)>1.6×1034 years and τ/B(p→μ+π0)>7.7×1033 years at 90% confidence level.

Abstract

A search for boosted dark matter using 161.9 kt yr of Super-Kamiokande IV data is presented. We search for an excess of elastically scattered electrons above the atmospheric neutrino background, with a visible energy between 100 MeV and 1 TeV, pointing back to the Galactic center or the Sun. No such excess is observed. Limits on boosted dark matter event rates in multiple angular cones around the Galactic center and Sun are calculated. Limits are also calculated for a baseline model of boosted dark matter produced from cold dark matter annihilation or decay. This is the first experimental search for boosted dark matter from the Galactic center or the Sun interacting in a terrestrial detector.

Abstract

Using 5326 days of atmospheric neutrino data, a search for atmospheric tau neutrino appearance has been performed in the Super-Kamiokande experiment. Super-Kamiokande measures the tau normalization to be 1.47±0.32 under the assumption of normal neutrino hierarchy, relative to the expectation of unity with neutrino oscillation. The result excludes the hypothesis of no-tau appearance with a significance level of 4.6σ. The inclusive charged-current tau neutrino cross section averaged by the tau neutrino flux at Super-Kamiokande is measured to be (0.94±0.20)×10−38 cm2. The measurement is consistent with the Standard Model prediction, agreeing to within 1.5σ.

Abstract

The Reactor Experiment for Neutrino Oscillation (RENO) has been taking electron antineutrino ($\overline{\nu}_{e}$) data from the reactors in Yonggwang, Korea, using two identical detectors since August 2011. Using roughly 500 live days of data through January 2013 we observe 290,775 (31,514) reactor $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ candidate events with 2.8 (4.9)% background in the near (far) detector. The observed visible positron spectra from the reactor $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ events in both detectors show discrepancy around 5 MeV with regard to the prediction from the current reactor $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ model. Based on a far-to-near ratio measurement using the spectral and rate information we have obtained $\sin^2 2 \theta_{13} = 0.082 \pm 0.009({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.006({\rm syst.})$ and $|\Delta m_{ee}^2| =[2.62_{-0.23}^{+0.21}({\rm stat.})_{-0.13}^{+0.12}({\rm syst.})]\times 10^{-3}$eV$^2$., Comment: 24 pages, 30 figures. Abstract

Astrophysical Journal Letters 830.1 (2016): L11 reproduced by permission of the AAS, We report the results from a search in Super-Kamiokande for neutrino signals coincident with the first detected gravitational-wave events, GW150914 and GW151226, as well as LVT151012, using a neutrino energy range from 3.5 MeV to 100 PeV. We searched for coincident neutrino events within a time window of ±500 s around the gravitational-wave detection time. Four neutrino candidates are found for GW150914, and no candidates are found for GW151226. The remaining neutrino candidates are consistent with the expected background events. We calculated the 90% confidence level upper limits on the combined neutrino fluence for both gravitational-wave events, which depends on event energy and topologies. Considering the upward-going muon data set (1.6 GeV-100 PeV), the neutrino fluence limit for each gravitational-wave event is 14-37 (19-50) cm-2 for muon neutrinos (muon antineutrinos), depending on the zenith angle of the event. Abstract

The RENO experiment has analyzed about 500 live days of data to observe an energy dependent disappearance of reactor $\overline{\nu}_e$ by comparison of their prompt signal spectra measured in two identical near and far detectors. In the period between August 2011 and January 2013, the far (near) detector observed 31541 (290775) electron antineutrino candidate events with a background fraction of 4.9\% (2.8\%). The measured prompt spectra show an excess of reactor $\overline{\nu}_e$ around 5 MeV relative to the prediction from a most commonly used model. A clear energy and baseline dependent disappearance of reactor $\overline{\nu}_e$ is observed in the deficit of the observed number of $\overline{\nu}_e$. 23. Structure and evolution of the Lewisian Gairloch shear zone: variable movement directions in a strike-slip regime

Abstract

Synopsis The Gairloch shear zone (GSZ) has long been regarded as a dextral strike-slip shear zone with a northwesterly plunging shear direction. However, the original strain analysis applies only to the northeastern third of the zone and the structure of the remaining two-thirds is considerably more complex. The 6.5 km wide GSZ was formed during late Laxfordian (D3) deformation at c . 1.7 Ga. It was a product of the interaction of D3 folding and dextral strike-slip shear under retrogressive greenschist-facies metamorphism on rocks previously intensely deformed by early Laxfordian (D2) deformation in amphibolite-facies. The GSZ is divided into four units across strike: the Northeastern shear zone with NW-plunging D3 linear fabric; the Flowerdale belt with SE-plunging D2 linear fabric and low D3 strain; the Ard belt with steeply plunging F3 folds; and the Southwestern shear zone, with SE-plunging D3 lineation. Thus the GSZ consists of two high-strain D3 shear zones on either side of a central low-strain belt. Although consistently dextral strike-slip throughout, the D3 shear regime varies from NE-up in the Northeastern shear zone through sub-horizontal strike-slip in the Ard belt to SW-up in the Southwestern shear zone. This variation may have been caused by local uplift or depression induced by variations in geometry of the walls of the strike-slip system. A revised very approximate minimum estimate of the horizontal component of dextral shear is c . 9.5 km with a net NE-up vertical component of c . 5.5 km. Similarities in structure between the GSZ and the South Harris belt strengthen the case for these two zones to have been part of the same structure.

25. The Laxford Shear Zone: an end-Archaean terrane boundary?

Abstract

The Lewisian Gneiss Complex of northwestern Scotland consists of Archaean gneisses, variably reworked during the Proterozoic. It can be divided into three districts – a central granulite-facies district between districts of amphibolite-facies gneiss to the north and south. Recent work has interpreted these districts in terms of separate terranes, initiating a controversy that has implications for how Precambrian rocks are understood worldwide. The northern district of the Lewisian Gneiss Complex (the Rhiconich terrane) is separated from the central district (the Assynt terrane) by a broad ductile shear zone known as the Laxford Shear Zone. This paper reviews the geology of the Laxford Shear Zone, clarifying field relationships and discussing other evidence, to consider whether or not it does indeed represent a terrane boundary. A detailed review of field, geochemical and geochronological evidence supports the recognition of the separate Assynt and Rhiconich terranes. Mafic dykes (the Scourie Dyke Swarm) and granitoids, of Palaeoproterozoic age, occur on both sides of the Laxford Shear Zone and thus the terranes were most probably juxtaposed during the late Archaean to early Palaeoproterozoic Inverian event. Subsequently, the less-competent, more-hydrous amphibolite-facies gneisses of the Rhiconich terrane were affected by later Palaeoproterozoic (Laxfordian) deformation and partial melting, to a greater extent than the more-competent granulite-facies gneisses of the Assynt terrane.

26. The Lewisian terrane model: a review

Abstract

Synopsis The Lewisian terrane model of Friend and Kinny divides the Lewisian complex into nine separate terranes believed to have amalgamated during the Palaeoproterozoic. This paper analyses the rationale for the terrane model and suggests criteria to evaluate and refine it. Similarities and differences in Palaeoproterozoic structural, metamorphic and igneous features are used to divide the complex into 14 separate blocks of three types: type A (upper-plate) characterized by retrogressed high-pressure granulite-facies Archaean metamorphic rocks and localized Laxfordian deformation; type B (lower plate) characterized by amphibolite-facies Archaean metamorphic rocks originating at higher crustal levels, intense Laxfordian deformation, and swarms of Laxfordian granites and pegmatites; and third, Palaeoproterozoic complexes comprising oceanic and volcanic arc elements. The boundaries between the type A and type B blocks, where seen, are major shear zones believed to represent a deformed and disrupted collisional suture between two large continental plates, the central Greenland craton (CGC) to the NE and the North Atlantic craton (NAC) to the SW. The following sequence of events is proposed. The Palaeoproterozoic complexes were accreted to the upper plate (NAC) at c. 1.9 Ga. This was followed by collision with the CGC at c. 1.87 Ga, causing the intense early Laxfordian deformation and high-grade metamorphism. At c. 1.74 Ga a second collision took place with the 1.80 Ga ‘Malin’ volcanic arc to the south, resulting in reactivation and late Laxfordian deformation, producing NW-trending folds, dextral shear zones, granite sheets and pegmatites. These late Laxfordian movements are considered to have resulted in considerable disruption of the early Laxfordian terranes. They include substantial strike-slip movements that may have led to the creation of further displaced terranes, some of which may prove to be exotic.

27. Emplacement of the Nain anorthosite: diapiric versus conduit ascent

Abstract

Estimation of settling velocities of large orthopyroxene megacrysts, found within anorthosite intrusions, are calculated and compared with ascent rates achieved by diapirism and conduit propagation. Calculations suggest that diapirism is far too slow to be an appropriate ascent mechanism for anorthositic crystal mush and favour conduit emplacement. The intrusions of the Nain Plutonic Suite (NPS) are located along the Abloviak shear zone, which marks the boundary between the Nain and Churchill provinces, and within the zone of juxtaposition of the Saglek and Hopedale blocks of the Nain Province. These crustal weaknesses have probably controlled the emplacement and distribution of the intrusions. Contact relations between intrusions of anorthosite and their gneissic host rock provide evidence for two emplacement styles within the NPS, the first typified by strongly deformed and recrystallized rocks, and the second by an outer border zone of mafic rocks. It is proposed that these differences in intrusive style are due to differences in ductility contrast between the magma and its surrounding host rocks, such that those intrusions emplaced into the thermally softened shear zone have deformed margins, whereas those intruded into the cooler Archaean crust have undeformed margins.

28. Comparing the drift of Laurentia and Baltica in the Proterozoic: the importance of key palaeomagnetic poles

Abstract

Key palaeomagnetic poles are defined as those which pass basic reliability criteria and are precisely and accurately dated. They allow a more rigorous analysis of Precambrian continental drift and continental reconstructions than the traditional apparent polar wander path (APWP) approach using mostly non-key poles. Between ca. 2.45 and 2.00 Ga in the early Palaeoproterozoic, key poles define the drift of the Archaean Superior craton of Laurentia, yielding a result that is quite unlike the drift interpreted in earlier studies using the APWP method. There are no early Palaeoproterozoic key poles for the other Archaean cratons that amalgamated to form Laurentia and Baltica prior to 1.8 Ga, so that a rigorous test of early Palaeoproterozoic reconstruction models is not possible. Key poles from Laurentia between ca. 1.46 and 1.267 Ga and Baltica between 1.63 and 1.265 Ga help to define, in a preliminary fashion, the early Mesoproterozoic drift of the two shields. The key pole age match at ca. 1.265 Ga is consistent with Baltica located adjacent to eastern Greenland, and geological considerations suggest that the most reasonable fit aligns the Labradorian belt of Laurentia with the Gothian belt of Baltica. Although there is limited support from non-key poles and key poles that are not matched in age for such a fit as early as ca. 1.8 Ga, no rigorous assessment will be possible until a match in key pole ages is achieved. In the late Mesoproterozoic to Neoproterozoic, Laurentia's drift is reasonably well documented by seven key poles between 1.235 and 0.73 Ga. There are no key poles in this period from Baltica, however, so that a ∼90° clockwise rotation of Baltica relative to Laurentia between 1.265 and 1.0 Ga, widely used in the literature, cannot be confirmed.

Abstract

Ion-microprobe U-Pb zircon ages of detrital zircons from a metasediment of the Loch Maree Group, Lewisian Complex, NW Scotland show striking similarities to those in coeval Palaeoproterozoic belts of Laurentia and Fennoscandia, and confirm previous suggestions of a connection between them. Late-Archaean zircons (3.06–2.48 Gyr old) represent derivation from Lewisian quartzofeldspathic gneisses, andlor a contemporaneous terrane. Palaeoproterozoic zircons (2.2–2.0 Gyrold) place a maximum age constraint upon deposition. An appropriate quartzofeldspathic source for these latter zircons is not presently known, either in the Lewisian or the wider Laurentia-Fennoscandia region, although its requirement would be consistent with a development of the Loch Maree Group, together with juvenile magmatic arc rocks, at an active margin which was probably removed by lateral tectonics. Comparisons are made with contemporaneous supracrustal sequences throughout the Laurentia–Fennoscandia region, which exhibit marked similarities in source region age characteristics, lithologies, and inferred depositional environment.

Abstract

A detailed fabric and microstructural analysis of the granitic mylonites was carried out on the southern side of Bes,parmak Mountain north of Selimiye (Milas). The mylonitic augen gneisses have a blastomylonitic texture characterized by large retort-shape porphyroclasts or augen of feldspars, around which a more ductile, medium to fine-grained matrix of muscovite, biotite, quartz and feldspar is deflected. Feldspars behave in both plastic and brittle fashion, because size reduction occurs through grain boundary migration and/or subgrain rotation, and also through fracturing. Typical “core-and-mantle” structure, characterized by a large feldspar core surrounded by a mantle of fine recrystallized grains, is very characteristic. The majority of plagioclase twins obey the albite-twin law; however, the association with pericline-law twinning suggests that many of the twins are mechanical. Evidence of strain, such as deformation twins, bent or curved twins, undulatory extinction, deformation bands and kink bands occur characteristically in plagioclase. Myrmekite is ubiquitous at K-feldspar grain boundaries, most notably on the long sides of inequant grains parallel to the S-foliation direction, which invariably face the maximum finite shortening direction. Deformation of quartz in mylonitic augen gneisses commonly results in the development of core-and-mantle structure and “type-4” quartz ribbons of elongated, preferably oriented, newly recrystallized quartz aggregates suggesting a primary dynamic recrystallization. Undulatory extinction, deformation bands and lamellae are the strain-related features associated with quartz porphyroclasts. Micas, especially biotite, undergo internal deformation by bend gliding and kinking. Most of the micas are completely attenuated and aligned such that their (001) planes are subparallel or parallel to the margins of quartz ribbons and define the foliation in the rock. These microstructures of feldspars, quartz and mica in the mylonitic augen gneisses in this part of the southern Menderes Massif are broadly consistent with fabric development under upper-greenschist- to lower-amphibolite-facies conditions, rather than almandine–amphibolite facies, as was previously believed. This supports the previous contention of the authors that the protoliths of augen gneisses are younger granitoids and do not represent an exposed Precambrian Pan-African basement in the Menderes Massif.

Graham Park writes: The terrane model of Kinny et al. (2005; see also Friend & Kinny 2001) presents a radically different picture of the Lewisian complex from the ‘traditional’ view of a single piece of Archaean crust that has been subsequently modified and augmented in various Proterozoic events. The authors are to be congratulated on their attempt to rationalize a very confused terminology that has arisen over many decades, and for forcing us to rethink our views. I have reservations about their re-definition of ‘Laxfordian’, but my comments mainly concern the validity of the terrane model as applied to the Lewisian and suggestions to refine it (see Park 2005). I agree that uncritical use of terms such as ‘Scourian’, ‘Laxfordian’ and ‘Scourie dyke suite’ can obscure genuine differences of rock, process or event (e.g. see Park et al . 2002). Most of the authors’ suggested revisions seem sensible, with the exception of their proposed restriction of ‘Laxfordian’ to a c. 1.74 Ga metamorphic event at Loch Laxford. I believe that this term is more useful in its current sense as a general name for the series of events etc. that affected the entire Lewisian complex after the incorporation of the early Palaeoproterozoic material (e.g. the Loch Maree Group and the ‘Scourie’ dykes). I have retained the traditional usage below for convenience. According to this concept, distinction is made between ‘suspect terranes’ and ‘displaced terranes’ i.e. those that are exotic or allochthonous. In order to qualify as a displaced terrane, a piece of crust should display evidence of significant displacement relative to its neighbour. Differences in geological history between two adjacent pieces of crust may not in themselves be sufficient evidence of large relative displacements between them. Since the first edition was published in 1983, this highly-regarded introductory textbook has been used by many generations of students worldwide. It is specifically tailored to the requirements of first or second year geology undergraduates.The third edition has been extensively revised and updated to include many new sections and over 50 new or redrawn illustrations. There are now over 220 illustrations, many incorporating a second colour to highlight essential features. The format has been changed to enhance the visual attractiveness of the book.The tripartite organization of the first and second editions has been modified by combining the purely descriptive or factual aspects of fault and fold structure in the earlier chapters with a simple treatment of mechanisms, leaving the more geometrically complex treatment until after the relevant sections on stress and strain, as before. Some subjects are introduced for the first time, e.g. inversion and orogen collapse, and others have been extensively modified, e.g. the chapter on gravity controlled structures now emphasises modern work on salt tectonics. The last third of the book is devoted to the wider context of geological structures and how they relate to plate tectonics. Abstract

Eocene volcanic rocks spanning the North Anatolian Fault Zone in north central Turkey have a common reversed polarity and appear to record a short term volcanic episode useful for identifying subsequent tectonic rotations. Although regional differences are present, no distributed clockwise rotations caused by dextral motion across the fault zone since mid-Miocene times are found. Instead variable anticlockwise block rotations demonstrate that this fault system does not obey theoretical models for crustal behaviour across continental transforms. Deformation is found to be highly inhomogeneous with a narrow zone of intense clockwise rotation recognised within blocks bounded by strike-slip faults above, and parallel to, the fundamental lineament. Further from the lineament no systematic rotations with respect to the major bounding plates are detected. A zone of c. 30° anticlockwise rotation in the east may be either a consequence of emplacement of the Pontides or an ongoing consequence of continental collision. Slightly larger rotations south of the fault probably record block rotations into Anatolia as this region is being extruded westwards by continuing impingement of Afro-Arabia into the Eurasian Plate.

The protoliths of mylonitized augen gneisses exposed in the southern sector of the Menderes Massif (West Turkey) are calc-alkaline, peraluminous, S-type, late- to post-tectonic tourmaline- and garnet-bearing, two-mica leucogranites. They cut and post-date the fabrics of the ‘main Menderes metamorphism’ which took place between the early Eocene and early Oligocene and intrude metamorphic basement rocks comprising the so-called ‘Palaeozoic schist envelope’ of the massif. They are themselves cut by an extensive network of tourmaline-rich dykes. Chemical, mineralogical, isotopic and field relations suggest that the granitic protolith crystallized from a boron-rich, water-saturated melt, derived from partial melting of metagreywacke in the lower crust during peak Barrovian-type metamorphism. The protolith was probably emplaced during lateorogenic extensional collapse of the thickened crust in west Turkey during late Oligocene time.

Abstract

Using a modified Piper (1976) pre-Grenville fit of Laurentia and Baltica, tectonic information from the Lewisian complex of Britain and from neighbouring Early Proterozoic belts of Laurentia and Baltica is reviewed. It is shown that a remarkable consistency in convergence directions existed across the whole region in the period 1.9-1.8 Ga suggesting that the reconstruction used may be correct, and that a common movement pattern can be inferred for the Early Proterozoic period within the North Atlantic region. A speculative plate tectonic history for the region between ∼ 2.6 and ∼ 1.6 Ga is discussed in four stages. (1) 2.6-2.4 Ga: development of conjugate shear-zone systems in the North Atlantic craton. (2) 2.4-2.0 Ga: rifting and dyke emplacement in older cratons; creation of oceanic and intracontinental basins. (3) 2.0-1.8 Ga: subduction at active margins of older cratons with creation of magmatic arcs; collision of cratons accompanied by closure of intra-cratonic basins. (4) 1.8-1.6 Ga: development of new active margin discordant to the previous ones, with significant changes in convergence direction within the amalgamated continental assembly.

Workshop on the Geology of Turkey -- APR, 1992 -- KEELE UNIV, KEELE, ENGLAND, WOS: A1993MU79900010, The earthquake of 13 March 1992 (Ms = 6-8) in the densely populated Erzincan region of eastern Turkey resulted in about 500 deaths, at least 2000 people injured and widespread destruction of buildings. The results are presented of field observations carried out within the Erzincan Basin immediately after the earthquake. The main area of surface deformation is about 55 km2 in extent and lies 15 km south-east of Erzincan. Surface fractures with significant displacements were observed with orientations as follows: strike-slip 095-110-degrees (dextral), 040-degrees (sinistral) and 090-degrees (sinistral); extensional 150-180-degrees. Most of the observed fractures are consistent with the Harvard centroid moment tensor solution for the main shock, which indicates north-south compressional and east-west extensional principal horizontal stress axes. It is suggested that the earthquake probably occurred as a result of dextral strike-slip motion on a segment of the North Anatolian Fault Zone.

Abstract

Brain structures located within the anterior wall of the third brain ventricle (subfornical organ, median preoptic nucleus and organum vasculosum of the lamina terminalis) are known to be involved in thirst as well as other aspects of body fluid and electrolyte balance. The present studies evaluated the role of these structures in the Na appetite of mildly or moderately Na-depleted sheep (sheep with a parotid fistula deprived of Na solution for 22 or 46 h). In addition, the role of these structures was tested in mildly Na-depleted sheep in which the Na appetite was enhanced by decreasing cerebrospinal fluid and brain extracellular fluid Na concentration (i.e., i.c.v. infusion of hypertonic saccharide solution) or was decreased by systemic infusion of hypertonic saline. The results indicated that sheep with lesions which reduced or eliminated daily water intake or water intake in response to hypertonicity of body fluids had, in all situations tested, appropriate changes in Na appetite (i.e., similar to their prelesion changes). Thus, the present experiments demonstrated that the brain areas involved in thirst as well as other aspects of body fluid and electrolyte balance are anatomically different from those involved in regulating Na appetite.

Abstract

The Mid-Proterozoic Sveconorwegian orogenic province of Scandinavia, usually correlated with the Grenville province of North America, is divided into several sub-provinces separated by major shear zones. In the Swedish part of the province, three sub-provinces, from west to east, the Western, Median and Eastern segments, are separated by, respectively, the DaIsland boundary thrust/Gota Alv zone and the Mylonite zone. These shear zones cut a mainly gneissose 1.7–1.2 Ga basement and c.1.1 Ga supracrustal cover (the Dal group). Detailed mapping in the Western and Median segments has shown that instead of one major zone separating the two segments, there is a complex branching network of zones on which the major displacement appears to be transferred onto successively more easterly zones from north to south. The zones in the west are mainly steep with strike-slip displacements, whereas further east, they are moderately or gently inclined with dip-slip displacements. Both types are folded in younger Sveconorwegian deformations. Early SE-directed thrust movements on the major Lerdal, Gota Alv and Mylonite zones were succeeded by E-directed thrust movements, particularly on the Dalsland boundary and Mylonite zones, and on numerous minor zones. In the west, sinistral strike-slip movements took place on N-S steep zones and dextral on NE-SW steep zones. It is suggested that oblique NW-SE convergence between Scandinavia and North America during Sveconorwegian collision produced the early SE-directed movements and was later partitioned into sinistral strike-slip in the west and orthogonal E-W convergence further east. This kinematic pattern is explained with reference to the paleomagnetically determined rotation of Scandinavia with respect to North America between c. 1200 and 1100 Ma. During the main Sveconorwegian collision at c. 1100 Ma, the geometry of the restoration implies that orthogonal convergence in the Grenville province should be accompanied by oblique convergence in SW Sweden. Subsequent movements may have involved sinistral transpression across SW Sweden.

The Kenmore inlier exposes the most intensely deformed part of a major Laxfordian shear zone whose NE margin occurs at Diabaig, N of Loch Torridon. The Laxfordian (post-Scourie dyke) deformation commences with two very intense deformations D1 and D2, producing LS fabrics in dykes and gneisses associated with heterogeneous, locally very large, and typically prolate strains under amphibolite-facies metamorphism. D2 also produced widespread mesoscopic folds. The finite strain was measured at 135 localities using grain-aggregate shapes in Scourie dykes. The combined D1-D2 elongation lineation plunges gently to NW or SE, and the planar fabric appears to have been sub-horizontal before the D3 deformation, which produced NW-SE upright folds under retrogressive metamorphism.The D1-D2 structure is attributed to a major sub-horizontal shear zone with a top-to-NW movement, a minimum vertical width of 2·5 km and estimated minimum displacement of c. 19 km. The upper (NE) wall of the shear zone at Diabaig exhibits dextral-normal (NE-down) D1 movements. The D2 structures are attributed to superimposition of sub-horizontal movements on earlier inclined D1 fabrics as the shear zone evolves. The D3 refolding reflects a change to a dextral transpressive regime.

Study design:Prospective study.Objectives:The primary objective of neurophysiological monitoring during surgery is to prevent permanent neurological sequelae. To avoid neurological injury, we applied somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEPs) and/or motor-evoked potentials (MEPs). We evaluated whether the combination of SEP and MEP for spinal surgery may be beneficial.Setting:Asian Medical Center, University of Ulsan College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea.Methods:Combined SEP/MEP monitoring was attempted in 100 consecutive procedures for spinal operations. Trains of transcranial electrical stimulation over the motor cortex were used to elicit MEPs from the muscles of the upper/lower limbs. The tibial and median nerves were stimulated to record SEP.Results:Combined SEP/MEP recording was successfully achieved in 85 of 100 operations. In 61 of 85 operations (71%), SEP and MEP were stable, and all patients remained neurologically intact after surgery. Significant MEP changes were recorded in 20 operations, either combined with (n=4) or without (n=16) SEP changes. In 7 of these 20 operations, MEP recovered to some extent after surgical intervention, and these patients showed no neurological changes. In the remaining 13 operations, MEP did not recover and the patients had a transient (n=4) or a permanent (n=3) motor deficit. Significant SEP changes with stable MEP were observed in four operations, all of which were not related to postoperative motor deficit.Conclusion:Combined SEP/MEP monitoring provided higher sensitivity and higher positive/negative predictive value than single-modality monitoring techniques. 45. Plate kinematic history of Baltica during the Middle to Late Proterozoic: A model

Previous views based on the paleomagnetic history of Baltica compared with that of Laurentia indicate a period of independent movement between ∼1200 and 950 Ma, during which Baltica appears to have rotated ∼80° clockwise relative to Laurentia; at ∼950 Ma, there was a rapid reversal from southward to northward motion. Movement directions on major shear zones in the 1100-1000 Ma Sveconorwegian belt of Baltica indicate oblique sinistral convergence during the main Sveconorwegian collision event, whereas shear zones in the Grenville belt indicate convergence orthogonal to the belt. A model for the drift history of Baltica suggests that the ∼80° rotation away from Laurentia at ∼1200 Ma was followed by collision ∼1050 Ma with a third continent (South America?) that may have already docked with Laurentia along the main Grenville suture. Subsequent movement of Baltica toward Laurentia ended with docking along the northern Britain and eastern Greenland margin at ∼1000 Ma. At ∼950 Ma, sinistral transform motion took place along the Laurentian margin and may have been responsible for early (pre-750 Ma) orogen-parallel movement directions in the Caledonides of Scotland and Norway, linked with a regional thermal event producing widespread granites and pegmatites at 800-750 Ma.

46. Late Nagssugtoqidian stress rientation derived from deformed granodiorite dykes north of Holsteinsborg, West Greenland

A suite of granodiorite dykes, of varied but non-random orientation, cuts basement gneisses in a 15 km x 8 km coastal strip around lat. 67°N in central West Greenland. The dykes which were metamorphosed in the granulite facies have been deformed by simple shear and vary from apparently unstrained to highly strained. The deformation occurred during a late stage of Nagssugtoqidian deformation (Lower Proterozoic). The orientation of the principal stress planes and of the σ 1 axis are determined on a best-fit basis from the change in sense of shear direction observed in the horizontal and in the vertical plane. The positions of the σ 2 and σ 3 axes are determined by a method involving a comparison of the observed shear directions with those predicted from a model stress system with known σ 1 and σ 2 = σ 3 . This stress model gives a σ 1 with a plunge of 28° on a bearing of 161°, a horizontal σ 3 and a steep σ 2 . This result is consistent with other more approximate estimates of the Nagssugtoqidian stress orientation near the Nagssugtoqidian front in W Greenland.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate whether arginine vasopressin (AVP) is natriuretic in sheep at plasma concentrations comparable to those induced by water deprivation. AVP was infused intravenously at 0.1, 0.2, and 0.5 microgram/h for 24-48 h in sheep allowed free access to water. Infusion of AVP at 0.1 microgram/h did not alter renal Na output, whereas infusion of AVP at both 0.2 and 0.5 microgram/h significantly increased daily output of Na in urine. Significant natriuresis did not occur until 3.5 h after the start of AVP infusion at 0.2 microgram/h. Plasma AVP levels induced by these infusions were 9.8 +/- 1.6 (0.1 microgram/h AVP), 21.9 +/- 7.7 (0.2 microgram/h AVP), and 32.5 +/- 9.0 pg/ml (0.5 microgram/h AVP) after 24 h. These concentrations are within the range found in sheep deprived of water for 3 days. Hypophysectomy abolished increases in plasma AVP concentration but not natriuresis in response to water deprivation. This suggests that increased plasma AVP concentration does not play an essential role in the mechanisms subserving dehydration-induced natriuresis.

Abstract

Rb-Sr whole-rock isochrons are reported for the Halleviksstrand amphibolite (1432 ± 92 Ma) and the Assmunderod-Myckleby augen granite (1379 ± 46 Ma) which intrude the Stora Le—Marstrand migmatite belt of Orust, SW Sweden. These ages provide a younger limit for the age of the main migmatisation and an older limit for the emplacement of minor silicic and mafic intrusions and subsequent regional metamorphism and deformation. They overlap with published ages from granitic intrusions in the adjacent Amal belt and provide the basis for a correlation between the two belts.

Abstract

The Orust dykes and their regional correlatives are an important time marker in the polymetamorphic Ostfold-Marstrand belt of S.E. Norway and S.W. Sweden. They were deformed and metamorphosed in the amphibolite facies during the Sveconorwegian (= Grenville) orogeny. Three narrow strongly deformed dykes yield RbSr whole-rock ages (1106 ± 52 m.y., 1062 ± 90 m.y., 1000 ± 153 m.y.). The weighted mean age (1087 m.y.) is interpreted as the age of the first post-dyke deformation and the accompanying amphibolite facies metamorphism. High initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.7074 ± 9, 0.710 ± 2, 0.713 ± 3, respectively) and other geochemical evidence point to considerable exchange of mobile elements between the dykes and the country rocks. The emplacement age is not known precisely. However, the dykes may be correlated with widespread mafic magnatism which accompanied crustal instability in the N. Atlantic region early in the Sveconorwegian (= Grenville) orogeny about 1200 m.y. ago.
