Abstract: The neutron time of flight (n_TOF) facility at CERN is a neutron spallation source, its white neutron energy spectrum ranges from thermal to several GeV, covering the full energy range of interest for nuclear astrophysics, in particular for measurements of the neutron capture cross-section required in s-process nucleosynthesis. This contribution gives an overview on the astrophysical program made at n_TOF facility, the results and the implications will be considered.

Abstract: The neutron-induced fission cross section of Np237 was experimentally determined at the high-resolution and high-intensity facility n-TOF, at CERN, in the energy range 100 keV to 9 MeV, using the U235(n,f) and U238(n,f) cross section standards below and above 2 MeV, respectively. A fast ionization chamber was used in order to detect the fission fragments from the reactions and the targets were characterized as far as their mass and homogeneity are concerned by means of α spectroscopy and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy respectively. Theoretical calculations within the Hauser-Feshbach formalism have been performed, employing the empire code, and the model parameters were tuned in order to successfully reproduce the experimental fission cross-sectional data and simultaneously all the competing reaction channels.

Abstract: In this document, we present the nal result obtained at the n TOF experiment for the neutron- induced ssion cross section of the 237Np, from the ssion threshold up to 1 GeV. The method applied to get this result is brie y discussed. n TOF data are compared to the last experimental measurements using other TOF facilities or the surrogate method, reported experiments performed with monoenergetic sources and the FISCAL systematic, including a discussion about the existing discrepancies.

Abstract: The CERN Neutron Time-Of-Flight (n-TOF) facility is well suited to measure small neutron-induced fission cross sections, as those of subactinides. The cross section ratios of {sup nat}Pb and {sup 209}Bi relative to {sup 235}U and {sup 238}U were measured using PPAC detectors. The fragment coincidence method allows to unambiguously identify the fission events. The present experiment provides the first results for neutron-induced fission up to 1 GeV for {sup nat}Pb and {sup 209}Bi. A good agreement with previous experimental data below 200 MeV is shown. The comparison with proton-induced fission indicates that the limiting regime where neutron-induced and proton-induced fission reach equal cross section is close to 1 GeV.

Abstract: The resistive plate chamber (RPC) concept for time-of-flight positron emission tomography (TOF-PET) is based on the converter-plate gamma detection principle and takes advantage of the naturally layered structure of RPCs, of its simple and economic construction, excellent time resolution and very good intrinsic position accuracy. These characteristics may be of interest for the detailed imaging of small animals and for high-sensitivity whole-body human TOF-PET. In this communication we will present detailed simulations concerning the efficiency and imaging accuracy of the RPC-PET concept as a function of the main structural parameters, supplemented by measurements in a large-area chamber targeted at human RPC-PET.

Abstract: The detection of fluorescence radiation produced in the atmosphere by the extensive air showers (EAS) generated by the interaction of incoming ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECR) with the air molecules, is a technique that is being used by several experiments like Hires and Auger. This emission results from the radiative de-excitation of the N 2 C 3 Π u and N 2 + B 2 Σ u + molecular states (2P and 1N systems, respectively) that can also be deactivated by two body collisions with molecules in their ground states. The efficiency of this electronic quenching depends on the nature of the quencher, the gas density and the gas temperature. In this work, an analysis of the quenching mechanisms is presented with particular emphasis on their temperature dependence. The quenching rate constant for 2 P ( 0 , 0 ) band is found to decrease with increasing temperature. All data were corrected for geometrical factors and for the temperature dependence of the response of the optical system elements.

8. Towards a PMT based optical readout GEM TPC—First results

Abstract: We report the first results on the operation of an optical double GEM TPC, read out by four photomultipliers in a square array. The detector, operated with Ar + 5 % CF 4 at atmospheric pressure, was tested with 241Am alpha particles emitted in various orientations. We obtained a typical track angle resolution of 2 ∘ ( σ ) at 45 ∘ and achieved a point position resolution of better than 1 mm (FWHM) for the X- and Y-directions in the GEM plane.

Abstract: The status of the resistive plate chamber (RPC)–PET technology for small animals is briefly reviewed and its sensitivity performance for human PET studied through Monte-Carlo simulations. The cost-effectiveness of these detectors and their very good timing characteristics open the possibility to build affordable Time of Flight (TOF)–PET systems with very large fields of view. Simulations suggest that the sensitivity of such systems for human whole-body screening, under reasonable assumptions, may exceed the present crystal-based PET technology by a factor up to 20.

Abstract: The beta-decay of Re-187 (t(1/2) = 42.3 Gyr) represents a suited cosmo-chronometer for the age of the r-process abundances, since the radiogenic part of the daughter isotope (OS)-O-187 is defined by the difference between the solar Os-187 abundance and s-process contribution to Os-187. The latter component can be determined via the s-process systematics based on the stellar neutron capture cross sections of Os-186 and Os-187. The laboratory cross section of Os-187 requires a significant correction for the effect of the low-lying excited state at 9.75 keV, which is strongly populated under stellar conditions. This theoretical correction can be improved by an experimental cross section for inelastic scattering to the 9.75 keV state. High resolution time-of-flight measurements of (n, gamma) cross sections of (OS)-O-186,187,188 from I eV to I MeV at CERN n-TOF facility are reported. The inferred stellar cross sections differ from previously recommended values. In addition, the inelastic scattering cross section has been measured at 30 keV neutron energy via time-of-flight at the Karlsruhe 3.7 MV Van de Graaff. Abstract: A prototype composed of four resistive plate chamber layers has been exposed to quasi-monoenergetic neutrons produced from a deuteron beam of varying energy (300 to 1500 AMeV) in experiment S406 at GSI, Darmstad, Germany. Each layer, with an active area of about 2000 × 500 mm2, is made of modules containing the active gaps, all in multigap construction. Each gap is defined by 0.3 mm nylon mono-filaments positioned between 2.85 mm thick float glass electrodes. The modules are operated in avalanche mode with a non-flammable gas mixture composed of 90% C2H2F4 and 10% SF6. The signals are readout by a pick-up electrode formed by 15 copper strips (per layer), spaced at a pitch of 30 mm, connected at both sides to timing front end electronics. Measurements of the time of flight jitter of neutrons, in the mentioned energy range, point to a contribution of the resistive plate chamber in the order of 150 ps, independent of the neutron energy.

Abstract: The $^{235}$U neutron-induced cross section is widely used as reference cross section for measuring other fission cross sections, but in the resonance region it is not considered as an IAEA standard because of the scarce experimental data covering the full region. In this work, we deal with a new analysis of the experimental data obtained with a detection setup based on parallel plate ionization chambers (PPACs) at the CERN n_TOF facility in the range from 1 eV to 10 keV. The relative cross section has been normalised to the IAEA value in the region between 7.8 and 11 eV, which is claimed as well-known. Comparison with the ENDF/B-VII evaluation and the IAEA reference file from 100 eV to 10 keV are provided.

Abstract: The design and performance of a 1.2 liter liquid xenon chamber equipped with 7 two-inch photomultiplier tubes, with the purpose of studying the scintillation response of xenon to gamma-rays and neutrons, is described. Measurements with gamma-rays indicate a high VUV light collection efficiency resulting in ~5.5 photoelectrons per 1 keV of deposited energy. The energy resolution (FWHM) is 18% and 22%, for 122 keV and 511 keV gamma-rays, respectively. An algorithm for the reconstruction of the scintillation coordinates in (x,y) plane was developed and tested. The position resolution is estimated to be 6.9 mm (sigma) for 122 keV gamma-rays.

15. A study of ageing in timing RPCs

Abstract: The present study concerns the search for ageing effects in 0.3 mm gap timing RPCs. Counters were made with glass and aluminium electrodes and kept under a continuous gas flow of tetrafluorethane with 10% sulphur hexafluoride, 5% isobutane and water at 10% relative humidity. After 500 days of operation at the saturation current an accumulated charge of 800 mC was collected, equivalent to over 8 years of continuous operation at 300 Hz/cm2. No evidence was found of any long-term increase of dark current, suggesting that the ageing effect in timing RPCs is less severe than in streamer-mode glass RPCs. Abstract: The accuracy of the pulse height weighting technique for the determination of neutron capture cross-sections is investigated. The technique is applied to measurements performed with C6D6 liquid scintillation detectors of two different types using capture samples of various dimensions. The data for well-known (n, gamma) resonances are analyzed using weighting functions obtained from Monte Carlo simulations of the experimental set-up. Several causes of systematic deviation are identified and their effect is quantified. In all the cases measured the reaction yield agrees with the standard value within 2%. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. 17. Single-gap timing RPCs with bidimensional position-sensitive readout for very accurate TOF systems

Abstract: In this work, we report the development and performance of single-gap timing RPCs equipped with a 3 mm FWHM resolution bidimensional position-sensitive readout and reaching a timing resolution of 55 ps [sigma] at an efficiency of 75% for MIPs. These chambers are aimed to be applied in a multilayer geometry, forming small and very accurate TOF systems. The avalanche localization capability would provide information for accurate flight-path determination and allow the offline correction of any position dependent effects in the chamber, like gap inhomogeneities or edge effects. The multilayer geometry would provide redundant timing information, which, besides improving the timing resolution, can be used for reducing the timing tails and for the self-calibration of the device. Abstract: Light emitted during the development of electron avalanches in a gas electron multiplier (GEM) can be efficiently used for optical readout of the detector. We report on measurements of total light yields in Ar/CF 4 , He/CF 4 , Ar/TEA and Xe/TEA mixtures. Information on the energy resolution obtained with low-energy X-ray photons is also presented. The spectral distribution of the light produced in the GEM is analysed and the mechanisms associated with the process of light production are considered.

Abstract: The precise determination of the neutron capture cross sections of Os186 and Os187 is important to define the s-process abundance of Os187 at the formation of the solar system. This quantity can be used to evaluate the radiogenic component of the abundance of Os187 due to the decay of the unstable Re187 (t1/2=41.2 Gyr) and from this to infer the time duration of the nucleosynthesis in our galaxy (Re/Os cosmochronometer). The neutron capture cross sections of Os186, Os187, and Os188 have been measured at the CERN n-TOF facility from 1 eV to 1 MeV, covering the entire energy range of astrophysical interest. The measurement has been performed by time-of-flight technique using isotopically enriched samples and two C6D6 scintillation detectors for recording the prompt γ rays emitted in the capture events. Maxwellian averaged capture cross sections have been determined for thermal energies between kT=5 and 100 keV corresponding to all possible s-process scenarios. The estimated uncertainties for the values at 30 keV are 4.1, 3.3, and 4.7% for Os186, Os187, and Os188, respectively. © 2010 The American Physical Society

Abstract: 7th International Topical Meeting on Industrial Radiation and Radioisotope Measurement Application. Czech Tech univ, Prague, CZECH REPUBLIC. JUN 22-27, 2008, In 2002, an innovative neutron time-of-flight facility started operation at CERN: n_TOF. The main characteristics that make the new facility unique are the high instantaneous neutron flux, high resolution and wide energy range. Combined with state-of-the-art detectors and data acquisition system, these features have allowed to collect high accuracy neutron cross-section data on a variety of isotopes, many of which radioactive, of interest for Nuclear Astrophysics and for applications to advanced reactor technologies. A review of the most important results on capture and fission reactions obtained so far at n_TOF is presented, together with plans for new measurements related to nuclear industry.

Abstract: Neutron resonance analyses have been performed for the capture cross sections of 186Os, 187Os, and 188Os measured at the n_TOF facility at cern. Resonance parameters have been extracted up to 5, 3, and 8 keV, respectively, using the sammy code for a full R-matrix fit of the capture yields. From these results average resonance parameters were derived by a statistical analysis to provide a comprehensive experimental basis for modeling of the stellar neutron capture rates of these isotopes in terms of the Hauser-Feshbach statistical model. Consistent calculations for the capture and inelastic reaction channels are crucial for the evaluation of stellar enhancement factors to correct the Maxwellian averaged cross sections obtained from experimental data for the effect of thermally populated excited states. These factors have been calculated for the full temperature range of current scenarios of s-process nucleosynthesis using the combined information of the experimental data in the region of resolved resonances and in the continuum. The consequences of this analysis for the s-process component of the 187Os abundance and the related impact on the evaluation of the time duration of galactic nucleosynthesis via the Re/Os cosmochronometer are discussed.

Abstract: In this work, the spatial resolution of a human wide axial field of view RPC-PET system was studied. It was verified that physical processes involving the detection of 511 keV photons do not degrade the spatial resolution, compared with that attainable with systems based on inorganic scintillation crystals coupled to photomultiplier tubes. Considering the photon acollinearity effect, a detector depth-of-interaction resolution of 3.44 mm, and detector readout binnings of 1.0 and 2.0 mm, the spatial resolutions computed as the mean of full width at half maximum of point spread functions in three orthogonal directions (X, Y, and Z) were 1.4±0.0 and 2.1±0.1 mm, respectively. The corresponding mean spatial resolutions computed as the full width at tenth maximum were 3.9±0.4 and 4.8±0.3 mm, respectively.

Abstract: The successful operation of a liquid-xenon ionisation chamber with imaging capability is reported. A bi-dimensional readout based on a mini-strip plate—a glass slab with metal strips deposited along two perpendicular directions—was developed and studied both experimentally and by computation. An image of a 122 keV γ-source of 5 mm diameter was obtained with a liquid-xenon ionisation chamber equipped with such readout. A position resolution better than 2 mm was achieved.

Abstract: A two-dimensional readout with metal strips deposited on both sides of a glass plate is investigated aiming to assess the possibility of its use in a liquid xenon ionisation chamber for positron emission tomography. Here, we present results obtained with an [alpha]-source. Abstract: Background: The design of new nuclear reactors and transmutation devices requires to reduce the present neutron cross section uncertainties of minor actinides. Purpose: Improvement of the 243Am(n,? ) cross section uncertainty. Method: The 243Am(n,? ) cross section has been measured at the n_TOF facility at CERN with a BaF2 total absorption calorimeter, in the energy range between 0.7 eV and 2.5 keV. Results: The 243Am(n,? ) cross section has been successfully measured in the mentioned energy range. The resolved resonance region has been extended from 250 eV up to 400 eV. In the unresolved resonance region our results are compatible with one of the two incompatible capture data sets available below 2.5 keV. The data available in EXFOR and in the literature have been used to perform a simple analysis above 2.5 keV. Conclusions: The results of this measurement contribute to reduce the 243Am(n,? ) cross section uncertainty and suggest that this cross section is underestimated up to 25% in the neutron energy range between 50 eV and a few keV in the present evaluated data libraries.

Abstract: We present the analysis of the resolved resonance region for the 234U(n,f) cross section data measured at the CERN n TOF facility. The resonance parameters in the energy range from 1 eV to 1500 eV have been obtained with the SAMMY code by using as initial parameters for the fit the resonance parameters of the JENDL-3.3 evaluation. In addition, the statistical analysis has been accomplished, partly with the SAMDIST code, in order to study the level spacing and the Mehta-Dyson correlation.

Abstract: Background: The design of new nuclear reactors and transmutation devices requires to reduce the present neutron cross section uncertainties of minor actinides. Purpose: Improvement of the Am243(n,γ) cross section uncertainty. Method: The Am243(n,γ) cross section has been measured at the n-TOF facility at CERN with a BaF2 total absorption calorimeter, in the energy range between 0.7 eV and 2.5 keV. Results: The Am243(n,γ) cross section has been successfully measured in the mentioned energy range. The resolved resonance region has been extended from 250 eV up to 400 eV. In the unresolved resonance region our results are compatible with one of the two incompatible capture data sets available below 2.5 keV. The data available in EXFOR and in the literature have been used to perform a simple analysis above 2.5 keV. Conclusions: The results of this measurement contribute to reduce the Am243(n,γ) cross section uncertainty and suggest that this cross section is underestimated up to 25% in the neutron energy range between 50 eV and a few keV in the present evaluated data libraries. Abstract: In a previous work it has been pointed out that scintillation light, extending up to the infrared, emitted in microstructure based gaseous detectors (microstrips, microgaps, GEMs, etc.) can be used for non destructive testing of these detectors when they are associated to a CCD readout system. The choice of the gas mixture is an important issue, in so far as its emission spectrum should overlap efficiently the sensitivity region of the CCD (400-1100 nm). In the present work we report on a systematic study for several gas mixtures which includes measurements of the total light yields as a function of the electric field and of the spectrometric distribution of the light emitted, in the wavelength region between 250 and 930 nm. Results are presented for pure argon and argon and xenon based gas mixtures. A comparison is made between the results obtained with the CCD coupled to a GEM detector and with a gaseous scintillation proportional counter.

32. A spark-protected high-rate detector

Abstract: We developed a very low resistivity RPC-type detector, the anode of which was a plate made from materials with resistivity up to 5]107 ) cm, the cathode being a metallic mesh preceded by a drift region. In such a detector it was actually possible to combine the versatility and high counting-rate capability of metallic PPACs with the extreme robustness and ‘protectivenessa of Resistive Plate Chambers. Occasional discharges triggered by large deposits of primary ionisation or by extreme counting rates are quenched by the resistive anode and are constrained to the streamer phase of the sparking process. The study shows that this discharge a!ects the detector only locally and that the charge released is limited to a few tens of nC. Proportional counting rates up to 105 Hz/mm2 were achieved at gains above 104. The energy resolution at 6 keV was 20% FWHM. The observed gain-rate trade-o! is well described by an analytic model and further improvements may be expected by lowering the resistivity of the anode material. The properties of several custom-made, controllable resistivity, anode materials are described and prospects of improvement in the performance of the detector are discussed. Abstract: A multiwire ionisation chamber filled with liquid xenon as a position sensitive detector for Positron Emission Tomography is studied. Both xenon scintillation, which provides a fast trigger, and ionisation charge for position and energy measurements are read. The detection efficiency of the detector is assessed in separate measurements of the probability of detection of the scintillation light and the charge signals due to 511 keV gamma-rays. These were measured to be about 1 and 0.82, respectively.

Abstract: Detectors with highly resistive electrodes, particularly RPCs, have been studied extensively in recent years. Several authors considered the effect of rate on the detector response (efficiency) and a few also associated with the rate, in a rather qualitative manner, the charge per event, i.e., the current. Here, without loss of generality of the results obtained, rate effects are studied with a classical cylindrical counter geometry and different gas mixtures. To a high accuracy, the observed behavior, both for the proportional mode and for the transition to streamers, is quantitatively and accurately interpreted as loss of voltage on the dielectric due to the current generated in the detector, with direct consequences for the local electric field in the avalanche region. Results obtained in the self quenching streamer (SQS) mode fail the previous interpretation and clearly need further research.

Abstract: In this work, the rate effects associated with the gain of detectors with resistive electrodes are considered. To study these effects it was decided to use the classical proportional counter geometry, with a cylindrical glass tube as the cathode, rather than parallel plate devices. Indeed, the generality of the information obtained is not affected and the cylindrical proportional counter geometry has several advantages to gather detailed experimental data and to compare it with simple electric field calculations. A self-consistent set of data is presented for the effects of counting rate from a few tens of Hz up to several hundreds of Hz, using several gas mixtures, different anode wires, cathode radii and thickness of the resistive electrodes. Although a few sources of systematic errors can be identified, all the observed experimental data can be quantitatively explained. Indeed, the measured gas amplification, from a few tens up to ~5×104 and for the range of counting rates quoted above, depends only on the local electric field as it should be expected. Abstract: The EPR-type strangeness correlation in the K0 system produced in the reaction at rest has been tested using the CPLEAR detector. The strangeness was tagged via strong interaction with absorbers away from the creation point. Abstract: We study ππ correlations in the exclusive reaction pp → 2π+2π− at rest measured by the CPLEAR experiment. Avoiding the introduction of an arbitrary reference sample, we analyse differential distributions for equal charge pion pairs removing the phase-space factor event by event. A peak at small relative momenta is most pronounced for large total momentum of the pair. The physical implications of bosonic symmetrization for the properties of the pion source, in particular its radius, are briefly discussed. The two extremes considered are the chaotic Hanbury-Brown-Twiss mechanism and the coherent Skyrmion model.

Abstract: The CP-violation parameter \etazero\ is determined through the eigentime-dependent asymmetry in the rates of initially tagged \kzerob\ and \kzero\ decaying to \pizero \pizero. From the analysis of the complete data set we obtain the values $ \absetazero = [2.47 \pm 0.31_{\mbox{stat.}} \pm 0.24_{\mbox{syst.}}] \times 10^{-3} $ and $ \phizero = 42.0^0 \pm 5.6_{\mbox{stat.}}^0 \pm 1.9_{\mbox{syst.}}^0 % \pm 0.3_{\mbox{$\Delta$m}}^0 . $

Abstract: The CPLEAR experiment at CERN measures the time dependent decay rate asymmetries of initially pure K0 and K 0 states to study CP,T and CPT symmetries in the neutral kaon system. The latest results on η+−, Δm and x are reported, as well as direct tests of T violation and CPT violation in K0- K 0 oscillations. Our results are consistent with CPT invariance and allow for an improved limit on the K0- K 0 mass difference. Further, a possible loss of quantum coherence of the neutral kaon system has been tested to a level near the Planck scale.

Abstract: A search for the decay KS → e+e− was performed within the framework of the CPLEAR experiment. Full event reconstruction together with e/π separation allowed powerful background rejection and high signal acceptance. The analysis of the complete set of data yields the result: BR(KS → e+e−) < 1.4 × 10−7 (90% CL), an improvement on the current experimental limit by a factor of 20.

Abstract: The ratio R between the branching fractions of p p → K S K S and p p → K S K L for antiprotons annihilating at rest in gaseous hydrogen at 27 bar pressure was measured with the CPLEAR detector to be R(27 bar) = 0.037 ± 0.002. The fraction of P-wave annihilation at rest at this target density was deduced to be 0.45 ± 0.06. A value of R was also measured at 15 bar, with less statistics, yielding R(15 bar) = 0.041 ± 0.009.

Abstract: The CPLEAR experiment at CERN uses time-dependent decay-rate asymmetries between K 0 and K 0 to measure η +− . The analysis and the systematic errors are discussed. The preliminary results from all our data are φ +− = 43.5 0 ± 0.5 0 stat ± 0.5 syst ± 0.4 Δm and | η +−| = (2.316 ± 0.025 stat ± 0.028 syst ± 0.009 τ S ) × 10 −3 . The dominant part in the systematic error of φ +− is due to the regeneration correction. A dedicated experiment was performed to reduce this error considerably.

Abstract: The (n,γ) reaction of the radioactive isotope 93Zr has been measured at the n-TOF high-resolution time-of-flight facility at CERN. Resonance parameters have been extracted in the neutron energy range up to 8 keV, yielding capture widths smaller (14%) than reported in an earlier experiment. These results are important for detailed nucleosynthesis calculations and for refined studies of waste transmutation concepts. © 2013 American Physical Society.

Abstract: The CPLEAR collaboration has constructed a detector at CERN for an extensive programme of CP-, T- and CPT-symmetry studies using ${\rm K}^0$ and $\bar{\rm K}^0$ produced by the annihilation of $\bar{\rm p}$'s in a hydrogen gas target. The ${\rm K}^0$ and $\bar{\rm K}^0$ are identified by their companion products of the annihilation ${\rm K}^{\pm} \pi^{\mp}$ which are tracked with multiwire proportional chambers, drift chambers and streamer tubes. Particle identification is carried out with a liquid Cherenkov detector for fast separation of pions and kaons and with scintillators which allow the measurement of time of flight and energy loss. Photons are measured with a lead/gas sampling electromagnetic calorimeter. The required antiproton annihilation modes are selected by fast online processors using the tracking chamber and particle identification information. All the detectors are mounted in a 0.44 T uniform field of an axial solenoid of diameter 2 m and length 3.6 m to form a magnetic spectrometer capable of full on-line reconstruction and selection of events. The design, operating parameters and performance of the sub-detectors are described.}

Abstract: The CPLEAR experiment at CERN studies theCP, T andCPT symmetries in the neutral-kaon system by measuring the rate asymmetries between the decays of initially pure K0 and $$\overline {K^0 } $$ states. Using data taken between 1990 and mid 1994, precise measurements of |η+-|,φ +- and Δm are reported. The comparison of φ+- the superweak phase gives one of the most sensitive tests ofCPT invariance and leads to a new limit on the $$K^0 - \overline {K^0 } $$ mass difference.
