1. Characterization and magnetic properties of hollow α-Fe2O3 microspheres obtained by sol gel and spray roasting methods

Abstract

In this work, we characterize the hollow hematite (α-Fe2O3) micro spheres obtained by two non-template techniques: i) sol gel and ii) spray roasting process. Both techniques allow the production of high yield hollow hematite spheres up to 100 g for the case of sol gel and up to 500 kg for the case of spray roaster process. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The results indicate nearly uniform hollow spheres with diameters of around 1–1.5 μm and consisting of polycrystalline hematite. The Mӧssbauer spectroscopy reveals the signal change of quadrupole shift values evidencing the occurrence of the Morin transition and that the samples show an antiferromagnetic order at 77 K as in bulk hematite. The Morin temperature (TM) for both samples was obtained from the measurements of the magnetic moments as a function of the temperature in zero field cooling (ZFC) and field cooling (FC) modes. The values of TM for both samples are lower than that reported for bulk hematite (TM(bulk) = 263 K). Remarkably, the ZFC and FC loops do not overlap in both samples, revealing irreversible Morin transition. However, the sample obtained by sol gel presents thermal hysteresis with TM values of 260 K (in ZFC) and 248 K (FC). Whereas, the sample obtained by spray roaster process presents complete irreversibility and TM values of 252 K (in ZFC) and 242 K (in FC). Abstract

During the machining process there are some factors which determine cutting tool wear, among the parameters most well known are cutting tool speed, feed, cutting deep, tool geometry, part”™s material structure to be machined. Due to the diversity of technological parameters involved in the machining process, the machinability of the deferent material has been researched by a lot of researchers. In this paper it is presented a new methodology to evaluate the machinability in turning steel marked as SAE 1020 produced in Venezuela. The procedure and material utilized are also described. The results were analyzed ac- cording to: data sheets and evaluation of tool life data, which belong to ISO 3685:1993 standard. With the experiments the tool wear was obtained just in time for three different speed values, and C”™s Taylor for the same time unit was calculated. Surface quality and chip type were also analyzed.

Abstract

Racial disparities in cardiovascular disease are unjust, systematic, and preventable. Social determinants are a primary cause of health disparities, and these include factors such as structural and overt racism. Despite a number of efforts implemented over the past several decades, disparities in cardiovascular disease care and outcomes persist, pervading more the outpatient rather than the inpatient setting, thus putting racial and ethnic minority groups at risk for hospital readmissions. In this article, we discuss differences in care and outcomes of racial and ethnic minority groups in both of these settings through a review of registries. Furthermore, we explore potential factors that connote a revolving door phenomenon for those whose adverse outpatient environment puts them at risk for hospital readmissions. Additionally, we review promising strategies, as well as actionable items at the policy, clinical, and educational levels aimed at locking this revolving door.

Abstract

There is limited literature regarding potential disparities in nonmelanoma skin cancer for patients with skin of color.Use the sizes of Mohs micrographic surgery defects to examine disparities in nonmelanoma skin cancer among Hispanic/Latino patients with a secondary aim to examine the effect of insurance type.We conducted a multicenter retrospective study using data from 3 major institutions in Los Angeles County. A total of 3486 Mohs micrographic surgeries of basal cell, squamous cell, and basosquamous cell carcinomas were analyzed.Mohs micrographic surgery defect sizes were 17% larger among Hispanic/Latino patients compared with non-Hispanic White patients. More notably, when comparing defect sizes of squamous cell carcinomas to those of basal cell carcinomas, defects were 80% larger among Hispanic/Latino patients compared to non-Hispanic White patients who had 25% larger defect sizes. Compared to patients with Medicare, patients with health maintenance organization and Medicaid/health maintenance organization had 22% and 52% larger defect sizes, respectively, whereas patients with preferred provider organization, had 10% smaller defect sizes.The data included were from a single county population.Disparities regarding nonmelanoma skin cancer exist between patients with skin of color and White patients. Patients and the medical community need to be cognizant that skin cancer can develop in patients regardless of their race and ethnicity.

Abstract

Future wearable and portable devices with multiple transmit antennas operating below 6 GHz are constrained by regulatory limitations on the level of electromagnetic radiation a user can be exposed to, measured using the specific absorption rate (SAR). Signaling designs that are optimized to include SAR constraints can improve the performance of uplink transmission. These signaling schemes could include closed-loop beamforming, closed-loop precoding, and space-time coding, which have all been shown to achieve increased rates when optimized as a function of SAR. Previous research addressed SAR constrained optimization only within a single coherence time block. In this paper, we present transmit policies that dynamically allocate user electromagnetic radiation exposure over time. We propose three exposure allocation methods — optimal, uniform, and asymptotic — in the practical case with causal channel state information (CSI), and an on-off transmission approach for the low SAR-to-noise ratio regime. Our results demonstrate that the performance of SAR-aware transmission can be further improved by exploiting frequency and time diversity.

36. Multidrug-resistant Salmonella spp. in fecal samples of pigs with suspected salmonellosis in Antioquia, Colombia, 2019–2021

Abstract

Objectives. To determine the proportion of Salmonella enterica in fecal samples of live pigs with suspected salmonellosis analyzed at the diagnostic unit of the University of Antioquia, Colombia between 2019 and 2021, and examine the serotypes and antimicrobial resistance patterns. Methods. This was a laboratory-based cross-sectional study of routine data on fecal samples received from pig farms in all nine subregions of Antioquia state, Colombia. Salmonella spp. detection at the university is done using enrichment, selective culture, and polymerase chain reaction. Serotypes were identified using the Kauffmann–White scheme and isolates were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility using broth microdilution. Results. Of 653 samples tested, 149 (23%) were positive for S. enterica. Nine serotypes were identified. The most common were Salmonella Typhimurium (56%) and its monophasic variant (35%). Resistance to ampicillin (70%) was most frequently observed, followed by ciprofloxacin (55%), and sulfamethoxazole–trimethoprim (52%). No isolates were resistant to amikacin and gentamicin. Multidrug resistance (resistance to ≥ 3 classes of antibiotics) was observed in 61 (44%) isolates. Multidrug resistance was highest in S. Typhimurium (57%) compared with the other serotypes. Serotype was associated with multidrug resistance (p = 0.01), but age of the pig and sub-region were not. Conclusions. The proportion of Salmonella spp. and the associated high levels of multidrug resistance are of concern and may indicate irrational use of antimicrobials and poor management practices in pig production systems in the region. Strengthened surveillance is needed to monitor and improve farm management practices and the use of antimicrobials in farms in Colombia.

Abstract

Background The phytochemical mixture TriCurin (curcumin, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and resveratrol) eliminates human papillomavirus (HPV) (+) cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. In this study, we further evaluate TriCurin. Methods The activity of TriCurin and its individual compounds was assayed on W12 cells, derived from a cervical precancer containing episomal and integrated HPV16 DNA, using MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assays, microscopy and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and on HeLa cells by gene expression analysis. The stability and toxicity of TriCurin microemulsion were tested in an organotypic cervical tissue model. Results TriCurin and its individual compounds inhibit the growth of W12 cells, episomal, type 1 and 2 integrants; the relative order of activity is TriCurin, EGCG, curcumin, or resveratrol. RT-PCR shows that TriCurin activates p53 and suppresses HPV16 mRNAs E1, E2, E4, E6 and E7 at 24 h in W12 cells. Gene expression analysis shows that TriCurin activates pro-apoptotic genes and represses anti-apoptotic genes in HeLa cells. TriCurin in a microemulsion is stable and non-toxic to cervical tissue. The combination of TriCurin and tanshinone IIA exhibits additional synergy against HeLa cells. Conclusions TriCurin, and the combination of TriCurin with tanshinone IIA, are effective against HPV (+) cells. The phytochemical mixture, in the microemulsion-based cream, is a promising therapeutic for the prevention and treatment of cervical cancer.

Abstract

Electromagnetic exposure from wireless devices is strictly regulated around the world to ensure the safety of consumers. Recent studies have demonstrated that multi-antenna systems can leverage signal-level exposure models to jointly mitigate user radiation absorption and achieve high data rates. This is especially important for millimeter wave technologies, which are susceptible to power back-off techniques due to high propagation and blockage losses. However, prior models require significant overhead in the form of exposure measurements to compute model parameters and cannot be easily modified to predict electromagnetic absorption in different testing configurations. This article proposes methods to approximate the characteristic matrix of a quadratic model for two exposure measures in the millimeter wave band: incident power density and surface specific absorption rate (SAR). The presented models can be calculated with a small number of parameters and can be altered to account for mutual coupling, near-field effects, and changes in the exposure scenario. Spatial sampling schemes based on these models are derived to determine how many testing points are necessary to estimate exposure in a region within a specified margin of error. Software simulation results with half-wave dipoles validate the accuracy of the proposed models in a millimeter wave scenario.

Abstract

Recent p(T)-integrated cross-section measurements of the ground-state charm mesons and baryons, D-0, D+, D-s(+), Lambda(+)(c), and Xi(0)(c) are used to evaluate the charm fragmentation fractions and production cross section per unit of rapidity at midrapidity (vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.5), in pp collisions at root s = 5.02 TeV at the LHC. Abstract

The p(T)-differential production cross sections of prompt D-0, Lambda(c)+, and Sigma(0,++)(c) (2455) charmed hadrons are measured at midrapidity (vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.5) in pp collisions at root s. = 13 TeV. This is the first measurement of Sigma(0,++)(c) production in hadronic collisions. Assuming the same production yield for the three Sigma(0,++)(c) isospin states, the baryon-to-meson cross section ratios Sigma(0,+,++)(c)/D-0 and Lambda(+)(c)/D-0 are calculated in the transverse momentum (p(T)) intervals 2 < p(T) < 12 and 1 < p(T) < 24 GeV/c. Values significantly larger than in e(+)e(-) collisions are observed, indicating for the first time that baryon enhancement in hadronic collisions also extends to the Sigma(c). The feed-down contribution to Lambda(+)(c) production from Sigma(0,+,++)(c) is also reported and is found to be larger than in e(+)e(-) collisions. The data are compared with predictions from event generators and other phenomenological models, providing a sensitive test of the different charm-hadronization mechanisms implemented in the models.

Abstract

Cooperative relays improve reliability and coverage in wireless networks by providing multiple paths for data transmission. Relaying will play an essential role in vehicular networks at higher frequency bands, where mobility and frequent signal blockages cause link outages. To ensure connectivity in a relay-aided vehicular network, the relay selection policy should be designed to efficiently find unblocked relays. Inspired by recent advances in beam management in mobile millimeter wave (mmWave) networks, this paper address the question: how can the best relay be selected with minimal overhead from beam management? In this regard, we formulate a sequential decision problem to jointly optimize relay selection and beam management. We propose a joint relay selection and beam management policy based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL) using the Markov property of beam indices and beam measurements. The proposed DRL-based algorithm learns time-varying thresholds that adapt to the dynamic channel conditions and traffic patterns. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms baselines without prior channel knowledge. Moreover, the DRL-based algorithm can maintain high spectral efficiency under fast-varying channels.

Abstract

This paper presents a coastal migration index (CMI) useful for decision-making in the current scenario of sea-level rise (SLR) due to climate change. The CMI includes coastal human population density, degree of urbanization, and coastal-flooding penetration. Quantitative and qualitative statistical techniques and the geographic information system ArcGIS View 9.0 were used. Further, a panel of fifteen international experts in coastal management issues was consulted to establish and validate the CMI. Results led to three index components based on 22 indicators. CMI was applied in the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico and in Santiago de Cuba province, Cuba. According to CMI estimates, the risk levels associated with SLR for human settlements analyzed in Mexico and Cuba were 5.3% and 11.0%, respectively. The most severely affected communities will require resettlement. Meanwhile, the CMI determined that 15.8% of the Mexican territory studied will be able to withstand the effects of SLR through the management of engineering works that will protect human settlements. The CMI determined that 79.0%, in the case of Tamaulipas, as well as 89.0% of the Cuban territory, will not require new policies or guidelines to promote conservation and protection of coastal natural resources. Lastly, the method used allowed for creation of a CMI stoplight map useful to coastal decision-makers to adopt sound management actions.

Abstract

PurposeVarious disparities exist in HIV transmission among men who have sex with men (MSM). Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has been shown to decrease the acquisition of HIV, but there is variation in uptake within the MSM population. We aim to characterise PrEP use and correlates of self-reported PrEP use in a large national sample of urban MSM in the USA.MethodsUsing data from a geosocial-networking application, a national sample (n=3744) from the largest 50 metropolitan centres in the USA was obtained.ResultsWe found 18.1% (95% CI 16.8 to 19.3) of profiles reported using PrEP, with decreased reported PrEP use in younger MSM aged 18–24 years (adjusted OR (aOR)=0.5, 95% CI 0.3 to 0.7), obese MSM (aOR=0.5, 95% CI 0.3 to 0.9), black MSM (aOR=0.6, 95% CI 0.4 to 0.9) and MSM in the South (aOR=0.7, 95% CI 0.5 to 0.9).ConclusionSignificant disparities exist in PrEP reporting by age and among black, Southern US and obese MSM. More research is needed to better understand these disparities.

Abstract

BackgroundInterstitial lung disease (ILD) is one of the most frequent extra-articular manifestations of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and leads to a significantly increased risk for morbidity and mortality compared with RA alone [1]. The analysis of Electronic Health Records (ERHs) using machine learning (ML) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) holds great promise to better characterize the disease in real-world settings.ObjectivesThis study aims to a) estimate the prevalence of RA in Spain, b) determine the frequency of RA-ILD among RA patients, and c) describe the demographic and clinical characteristics in RA/RA-ILD patients.MethodsObservational, retrospective, and multicenter study based on the secondary use of unstructured clinical data in EHRs from 6 Spanish hospitals between January 1, 2014 and December 31, 2019. The free-text information from patients’ records was captured with SAVANA’s EHRead, a validated NLP technology which extracts clinical information from EHRs and standardizes it into a SNOMED-CT-based clinical terminology [2]. The study population comprised all adult patients ≥18 years with RA in the selected period and sites. Descriptive statistics were presented in summary tables. Prevalence was calculated dividing the total number of patients with RA over the total number of attended patients. This analysis was performed by age and sex.ResultsAmong all attended patients in the participating hospitals within the study period, 11,163 patients with RA were identified; of these, 8.6% (n = 959) had RA-associated ILD (RA-ILD). The age-adjusted prevalence of RA is shown in Figure 1. The estimated prevalence (95% CI) in the overall population was 0.49 (0.37-0.60), being 0.26 (0.19-0.32) in males and 0.71 (0.54-0.87) in females. Most patients in the RA (73.9%; n = 8,250) and RA-ILD populations (63.3%, n = 607) were female (Table 1). The median age (Q1, Q3) was 60.8 (49, 74) and 67 (56, 77) years in the RA and RA-ILD groups, respectively. Regarding disease course, the time from RA to ILD diagnosis was 27.6 (3.7, 73.2) months. Most comorbidities presented higher rates in the RA-ILD population, as shown in Table 1. Abstract

In quantum scattering processes between two particles, aspects characterizing the strong and Coulomb forces can be observed in kinematic distributions of the particle pairs. The sensitivity to the interaction potential reaches a maximum at low relative momentum and vanishing distance between the two particles. Ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions at the LHC provide an abundant source of many hadron species and can be employed as a measurement method of scattering parameters that is complementary to scattering experiments. This study confirms that momentum correlations of particles produced in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC provide an accurate measurement of kaon-proton scattering parameters at low relative momentum, allowing precise access to the K- p -> K- p process. This work also validates the femtoscopic measurement in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions as an alternative to scattering experiments and a complementary tool to the study of exotic atoms with comparable precision. In this work, the first femtoscopic measurement of momentum correlations of K- p (K+(p) over bar) and K+p (K-(p) over bar) pairs in Pb-Pb collisions at centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of root sNN = 5.02 TeV registered by the ALICE experiment is reported. The components of the K- p complex scattering length are extracted and found to be Rf(0) = -0.91 +/- 0.03(stat)(-0.03)(+0.17) (syst) and Sf(0) = 0.92 +/- 0.05(stat)(-0.33)(+0.12)(syst). The results are compared with chiral effective field theory predictions as well as with existing data from dedicated scattering and exotic kaonic atom experiments. Abstract

Correlations between moments of different flow coefficients are measured in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV recorded with the ALICE detector. These new measurements are based on multiparticle mixed harmonic cumulants calculated using charged particles in the pseudorapidity region vertical bar eta vertical bar < 0.8 with the transverse momentum range 0.2 < p(T) < 5.0 GeV/c. The centrality dependence of correlations between two flow coefficients as well as the correlations between three flow coefficients, both in terms of their second moments, are shown. In addition, a collection of mixed harmonic cumulants involving higher moments of v(2) and v(3) is measured for the first time, where the characteristic signature of negative, positive and negative signs of four-, six- and eight-particle cumulants are observed, respectively. The measurements are compared to the hydrodynamic calculations using iEBE-VISHNU with AMPT and TRENTo initial conditions. It is shown that the measurements carried out using the LHC Run 2 data in 2015 have the precision to explore the details of initial-state fluctuations and probe the nonlinear hydrodynamic response of v(2) and v(3) to their corresponding initial anisotropy coefficients epsilon(2) and epsilon(3). These new studies on correlations between three flow coefficients as well as correlations between higher moments of two different flow coefficients will pave the way to tighten constraints on initial-state models and help to extract precise information on the dynamic evolution of the hot and dense matter created in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC. Abstract

A measurement of dielectron production in proton-proton (pp) collisions at root s = 13 TeV, recorded with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC, is presented in this Letter. The data set was recorded with a reduced magnetic solenoid field. This enables the investigation of a kinematic domain at low dielectron (ee) invariant mass m(ee) and pair transverse momentum p(T,ee) that was previously inaccessible at the LHC. The cross section for dielectron production is studied as a function of m(ee), p(T,ee), and event multiplicity dNch=d.. The expected dielectron rate from hadron decays, called hadronic cocktail, utilizes a parametrization of the measured eta/pi(0) ratio in pp and proton-nucleus collisions, assuming that this ratio shows no strong dependence on collision energy at low transverse momentum. Comparison of the measured dielectron yield to the hadronic cocktail at 0.15 < m(ee) < 0.6 GeV/c(2) and for p(T,ee) < 0.4 GeV/c indicates an enhancement of soft dielectrons, reminiscent of the “anomalous” soft-photon and soft-dilepton excess in hadron-hadron collisions reported by several experiments under different experimental conditions. The enhancement factor over the hadronic cocktail amounts to 1.61 +/- 0.13(stat) +/- 0.17(syst, data) +/- 0.34osyst; cocktailTHORN in the ALICE acceptance. Acceptance-corrected excess spectra in mee and pT; ee are extracted and compared with calculations of dielectron production from hadronic bremsstrahlung and thermal radiation within a hadronic many-body approach.

Abstract

In this paper, the first femtoscopic analysis of pion-kaon correlations at the LHC is reported. The analysis was performed on the Pb-Pb collision data at root(S)(NN) = 2.76 TeV recorded with the ALICE detector. The non-identical particle correlations probe the spatio-temporal separation between sources of different particle species as well as the average source size of the emitting system. The sizes of the pion and kaon sources increase with centrality, and pions are emitted closer to the centre of the system and/or later than kaons. This is naturally expected in a system with strong radial flow and is qualitatively reproduced by hydrodynamic models. ALICE data on pion-kaon emission asymmetry are consistent with (3+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamics coupled to a statistical hadronisation model, resonance propagation, and decay code THERMINATOR 2 calculation, with an additional time delay between 1 and 2 fm/c for kaons. The delay can be interpreted as evidence for a significant hadronic rescattering phase in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC. (C) 2020 The Author. Published by Elsevier B.V.
