Abstract Background Mesophotic coral communities are increasingly gaining attention for the unique biological diversity they host, exemplified by the numerous mesophotic fish species that continue to be discovered. In contrast, many of the photosynthetic scleractinian corals observed at mesophotic depths are assumed to be depth-generalists, with very few species characterised as mesophotic-specialists. This presumed lack of a specialised community remains largely untested, as phylogenetic studies on corals have rarely included mesophotic samples and have long suffered from resolution issues associated with traditional sequence markers. Results Here, we used reduced-representation genome sequencing to conduct a phylogenomic assessment of the two dominant mesophotic genera of plating corals in the Indo-Pacific and Western Atlantic, respectively, Leptoseris and Agaricia. While these genome-wide phylogenies broadly corroborated the morphological taxonomy, they also exposed deep divergences within the two genera and undescribed diversity across the current taxonomic species. Five of the eight focal species consisted of at least two sympatric and genetically distinct lineages, which were consistently detected across different methods. Conclusions The repeated observation of genetically divergent lineages associated with mesophotic depths highlights that there may be many more mesophotic-specialist coral species than currently acknowledged and that an urgent assessment of this largely unstudied biological diversity is warranted.

Abstract High-density silicon composite anodes show large volume changes upon charging/discharging triggering the reformation of the solid electrolyte interface (SEI), an interface initially formed at the silicon surface. The question remains how the reformation process and accompanied material evolution, in particular for industrial up-scalable cells, impacts cell performance. Here, we develop a correlated workflow incorporating X-ray microscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy tomography, elemental imaging and deep learning-based microstructure quantification suitable to witness the structural and chemical progression of the silicon and SEI reformation upon cycling. The nanometer-sized SEI layer evolves into a micron-sized silicon electrolyte composite structure at prolonged cycles. Experimental-informed electrochemical modelling endorses an underutilisation of the active material due to the silicon electrolyte composite growth affecting the capacity. A chemo-mechanical model is used to analyse the stability of the SEI/silicon reaction front and to investigate the effects of material properties on the stability that can affect the capacity loss.

Polymer electrolytes containing Li-ion conducting fillers are among the extensively investigated materials for the development of solid-state Li metal batteries. The practical realization of these electrolytes is, however, impeded by their low Li-ion conductivity, which is related to the filler and the interplay between the filler and the polymer. Therefore, we performed an in-depth analysis on the influence of the filler content (0, 10, and 20 wt%) and filler morphology (particles and nanowires) on the electrical and electrochemical properties of the PEO-based composite electrolyte using a wide spectrum of characterization techniques, such as 3D micro-X-ray computed tomography, cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry, impedance spectroscopy, and galvanostatic cycling. The studies reveal that the filler materials are well distributed within the membranes, without any indications for the formation of agglomerates. For 10 wt% filler, a decrease in the crystallinity compared to PEO was observed, in contrast to 20 wt% filler showing an increase in crystallinity. Impedance spectroscopic studies on the Li-ion conductivity of the membranes have shown that the change in the Li-ion conductivity is solely related to the change in the crystallinity, rather than to the participation of LLZO as an active transport mediator. The PEO membranes containing 10 wt% LLZO have been tested in terms of their rate capability in symmetrical Li cells by galvanostatic cycling. A critical current density of up to 1 mA cm−2 at 60°C was observed.

Advanced die application materials, utilizing pressure-less sintered copper, show great prospects regarding cost effectiveness, power density, withstanding high switching speeds and temperature loading for novel eco-friendly and high efficiency semiconductors. In general, to preserve high reliability in combination with electrical functionality the design of elastic as well as electrical material parameters is of great importance. Here, we present a multi-method characterization approach to understand the impact of the morphology on the elastic as well as electrical behavior, which facilitates a strategy to design the relevant material parameters by tuning the morphology. Nano-SEM/FIB tomography and SEM/EBSD are applied to probe the morphology of three representative copper films. Nanoindentation and 4-point probe are used to extract the elastic modulus and specific electrical resistivity, respectively. The evaluated material parameters are compared with modeling results using the analyzed image data as an input. For the crucial image analysis, we develop a validated objective image analysis workflow. We obtain a quantified insight about the effect of the heterogeneous morphologies on the elastic modulus and specific electrical resistivity, thereby delivering important information about the necessary homogeneous copper morphology- and nano-scale pore-design. The strategy shall provide design guidelines to ensure reliable and high-performance die attachments.

Driven by the ongoing miniaturization and increasing integration in microelectronics devices, very thin metallic films became ever more important in recent years. Accordingly also the capability of determining specific physical and mechanical properties of such arrangements gained increasing importance. Miniaturized testing methods to evaluate, for example, the mechanical properties of thin metallic multilayers are therefore indispensable. A novel in-situ micromechanical approach is examined in the current study and compared to existing methods regarding their capability to determine the interface toughness of specific interfaces in multilayer configurations. Namely, sputter deposited copper and tungsten thin films with a thickness of approx. 500 nm on a stress-free silicon (100) substrate are investigated. The multilayer stacks consist of different materials that vary in microstructure, elastic properties and residual stress state. We examine the interface toughness via double cantilever beam tests, nanoindentation and novel miniaturized shear tests. The choice of a proper test method is indispensable when addressing strong interfaces, such as the W-Cu interface, in the presence of weaker ones. Finally, it is demonstrated that miniaturized shear testing is a very promising approach to test such strong interfaces as the interface of interest to fail is predefined by the sample geometry.

Objective: The Exercise is Medicine® On Campus (EIM-OC) international campaign leverages university resources (e.g., health centers, recreation, and kinesiology departments) to encourage students, faculty, and staff to integrate physical activity into campus culture. This involves evaluating student physical activity levels during health visits and establishing referral systems for exercise prescriptions. EIM-OC allows universities to earn tiered recognition (Gold, Silver, or Bronze) based on their on-campus physical activity promotion and integration. For Gold recognition, schools must incorporate routine physical activity assessments into their health system, ultimately connecting healthcare providers with health/fitness professionals (HFPs, e.g., campus recreation professionals, kinesiology professors). This research worked to uncover pivotal factors driving EIM-OC on-campus collaborations through HFPs’ perspectives. Methods: HFPs (n = 11) working full-time at a Gold-level institution (n = 10 in United States) participated. Semi-structured, Zoom-recorded interviews with a generic qualitative research design were completed between June and September 2022. Results: Major thematic findings included the importance of tangible support (e.g., personnel), encounters with both trust and tension cross-campus, positive student development opportunities, and variations in outcome reporting and program evaluation. Faculty and staff emphasized the need for methods to obtain and sustain program funding. Participants also expressed the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration to increase the collective impact of EIM-OC on student health and overall collegiate success. Conclusion: HFPs expanded on their EIM-OC experiences and program sustainment or growth requirements. With increased interdisciplinary collaboration, rigor in outcome reporting, and tangible resources, the collective impact of EIM-OC on student health outcomes and overall collegiate success could be greatly perpetuated.

An updated version of a proxy, termed EUV-TEC, describing the global total primary photoionisation is calculated from satellite-borne EUV measurements assuming a model atmosphere consisting of four major atmospheric constituents. Regional number densities of the background atmosphere are taken from the NRLMSISE-00 climatology. For calculation the Lambert-Beer law is used to describe the decrease of the radiation along their way through the atmosphere. The EUV-TEC proxy thus describes the ionospheric response to solar EUV radiation and its variability. EUV-TEC is compared against the global mean total electron content (TEC), a fundamental ionospheric parameter created from vertical TEC maps derived from GPS data. Strong correlation between these indices is found on different time scales. Results show that the EUV-TEC proxy represents the ionsopheric variability better than the conventional solar index F10.7 does, especially during high and moderate solar activity.

Introduction Women with pre-pregnancy diabetes or pre-pregnancy hypertension have increased risks of complications during pregnancy. Women who obtain prenatal care in the first trimester receive necessary routine testing and disease management tools that aid in controlling such conditions. However, research on the association between pre-pregnancy hypertension and pre-pregnancy diabetes and prenatal care timing among US women is limited. Methods This study used data from the 2018 National Vital Statistic System (n = 3,618,853). Trained personnel collected information on prenatal care timing, maternal conditions, and demographics. Multivariate logistic regression models evaluated the association between pre-pregnancy hypertension, pre-pregnancy diabetes and prenatal care timing. A stratified analysis was conducted to determine if race/ethnicity modified the associations. Results After adjustment, women with pre-pregnancy hypertension or pre-pregnancy diabetes had statistically significant increased odds of receiving early prenatal care compared to women without these conditions (OR 1.23; 95% CI: 1.21-1.26 and OR 1.27; 95% CI: 1.24-1.31, respectively). Among non-Hispanic White, non-Hispanic Black, and Hispanic women, those with pre-pregnancy hypertension or pre-pregnancy diabetes had statistically significantly increased odds of receiving early prenatal care compared to women without those pre-existing conditions (P < .001). Discussion Further research is needed on the transition from preconception care to obstetric care for women with pre-existing diabetes or hypertension. Researchers studying avian space use, dispersal, survival, and migration select tracking tags that optimize tag size (dimensions) and mass relative to the focal species to minimize risk to birds as they move and fly. Here we argue that antenna length and transmitter color are also critical tag design parameters that must be considered. Based on a review of the songbird tracking literature and unpublished cases, we found most cases of entanglement, which can result in bird injuries and death, occurred with longer antennas (>13 cm). However, such cases cannot infer rates of mortality or survival, nor may they be representative of entanglements across antenna lengths and studies using radio tags. Additionally, white or brightly colored transmitters that contrast with plumage, particularly of cryptically colored females and juveniles, may increase visibility to predators and result in higher mortality, or alternatively, cause a female to eject a nestling by mistaking the tag for a fecal sac or foreign object. Consequently, we call on researchers to report and publish cases of antenna entanglement, and for journal editors to encourage and applaud such reports, such that data can be compiled to inform guidelines on tag antenna lengths for different species. Future research is also needed to examine the impacts of tag color on parental behavior and survival of tagged birds. Meanwhile, researchers should strive to ensure that their tag color does not contrast markedly with avian plumages, while also taking care not to alter (i.e., do not color over) areas required for harness attachment, activating and deactivating tags. We hope such efforts will enable researchers and manufacturers to make more informed decisions about tracking tag design, particularly with respect to balancing the benefits of longer antennas, which provide greater power and detection distance, with risks of bird entanglement and mortality.

Black-throated blue warbler ( Setophaga caerulescens ) populations have been declining at the southern edge of the breeding range in North Carolina over the past two decades. Determining the causes of population declines in migratory species requires knowledge of the threats faced throughout the entire annual cycle, necessitating accurate information about the migratory routes and non-breeding areas used by birds. We used light-level geolocators to identify the fall migratory routes and non-breeding distributions of adults breeding at the southern edge of the range in North Carolina ( n = 5), where populations are declining, and at the core of the range in New Hampshire ( n = 8), where populations are stable. The strength of migratory connectivity was moderate (mean = 0.42). New Hampshire birds used non-breeding areas broadly distributed across the Caribbean, whereas North Carolina birds used a restricted non-breeding area largely in the Dominican Republic. Suitable forest cover declined at a higher rate from 2000 to 2019 in the Dominican Republic than in other Caribbean countries (8.4% vs. 2–4% loss), exposing birds from the trailing edge to significantly higher suitable habitat loss on the non-breeding grounds compared with range-core birds. Birds from the two study populations also exhibited differing migratory routes, with North Carolina birds migrating south through Florida and many New Hampshire birds performing an overwater flight from the Carolinas to the Caribbean. Our results suggest the possibility that, at least for this species, forest loss on the island of Hispaniola could be exacerbating population declines at the southern edge of the breeding range in North Carolina.

Barbiturates and benzodiazepines are GABAA-receptor agonists and potent antiseizure medications. We reported that exposure of neonatal macaques to combination of phenobarbital and midazolam (Pb/M) for 24 h, at clinically relevant doses and plasma levels, causes widespread apoptosis affecting neurons and oligodendrocytes. Notably, the extent of injury was markedly more severe compared to shorter (8 h) exposure to these drugs. We also reported that, in the infant macaque, mild hypothermia ameliorates the apoptosis response to the anesthetic sevoflurane. These findings prompted us explore whether mild hypothermia might protect infant nonhuman primates from neuro- and gliotoxicity of Pb/M. Since human infants with seizures may receive combinations of benzodiazepines and barbiturates for days, we opted for 24 h treatment with Pb/M.Neonatal rhesus monkeys received phenobarbital intravenously, followed by midazolam infusion over 24 h under normothermia (T > 36.5 °C-37.5 °C; n = 4) or mild hypothermia (T = 35 °C-36.5 °C; n = 5). Medication doses and blood levels measured were comparable to those in human infants. Animals were euthanized at 36 h and brains examined immunohistochemically and stereologically.Treatment was well tolerated. Extensive degeneration of neurons and oligodendrocytes was seen at 36 h in both groups within neocortex, basal ganglia, hippocampus and brainstem. Mild hypothermia over 36 h (maintained until terminal perfusion) conferred no protection against the neurotoxic and gliotoxic effects of Pb/M. This is in marked contrast to our previous findings that mild hypothermia is protective in the context of a 5 h-long exposure to sevoflurane in infant macaques.These findings demonstrate that brain injury caused by prolonged exposure to Pb/M in the neonatal primate cannot be ameliorated by mild hypothermia.

Objectives Prenatal care (PNC) is a critical preventive health service for pregnant women and infants. While timely PNC has been associated with improved birth outcomes, improvements have slowed since the late 1990s. Therefore, focus has shifted to interventions prior to pregnancy. Preconception care is recommended for all women of reproductive age. This study aimed to examine preconception care and its association with timeliness and adequacy of PNC. Methods This retrospective cohort study used data from a large sample of United States first-time mothers (n = 13,509) who participated in the 2009-2011 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System in ten states. Timeliness and adequacy of PNC data came from birth certificates, while preconception care receipt was self-reported. Logistic regression provided odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to model the association between preconception care receipt and the two PNC outcomes. Results After adjustment, women who received preconception care had statistically significant increased odds of timely (OR 1.30, 95% CI 1.08, 1.57), but not adequate PNC (OR 1.08, 95% CI 0.94, 1.24) as compared to women who did not receive preconception care. Pregnancy intention modified these associations. Associations were strongest among women with intended pregnancies (timely PNC: OR 1.63 and adequate PNC: OR 1.22). Conclusions for Practice Given that untimely PNC is associated with adverse birth outcomes, the observed association warrants increased focus on implementing preconception care. Objective To examine associations of household wealth and individual literacy with prenatal care in West Africa. Methods Data on women with recent births in Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Niger, Senegal and Sierra Leone were obtained from 2006 to 2010 Demographic and Health Surveys (n = 58,512). Separate logistic regressions estimated associations of literacy and wealth quintiles with prenatal care, controlling for age, parity, marital status, rural/urban residence, religion, multiple births, pregnancy wantedness, and the woman's involvement in decision-making at home. Any prenatal care was defined by [greater than or equal to]1 prenatal care visit. Adequate prenatal care was defined as at least four prenatal care visits beginning in the first trimester, at least one with a skilled provider. Results Seventy-eight percent of women had any prenatal care; 23 % had adequate care. Women who were not literate had lower odds of having any prenatal care (odds ratio, OR 0.29; 95 % confidence interval, CI 0.26-0.33) and lower odds of adequate care (OR 0.73, CI 0.68-0.78). Women in the poorest wealth quintile were substantially less likely to have any prenatal care than women in the wealthiest quintile (OR 0.24, CI 0.11-0.18), and less likely to have adequate care (OR 0.31, CI 0.27-0.35). Conclusions for Practice A substantial percentage of women in West Africa have no prenatal care. Few have adequate care. Illiteracy and poverty are important risk factors for having little or no prenatal care. Background. For patients with hypertension, effective 24-hour blood pressure (BP) control is vital to ensure protection against the early morning surge in BP and the associated increased risk of cardiovascular events. The aim of this analysis was to assess the 24-hour antihypertensive efficacy of olmesartan medoxomil (20 mg once daily) compared with candesartan cilexetil (8 mg once daily), with particular emphasis on BP control during the early morning period. Methods. This is an additional analysis of a previously reported randomised, double-blind study in which 635 patients with mainly mild to moderate hypertension were randomised to 8 weeks of treatment with either olmesartan medoxomil 20 mg/day or candesartan cilexetil 8 mg/day. Changes from baseline during the last 4 and 2 hours of ambulatory BP measurement (ABPM) after 1, 2 and 8 weeks of treatment were compared between the two groups. Each year approximately 7 % of women experience hypertensive disorders during pregnancy which can result in adverse events for both the mother and child. Previous research suggests that contraception at the time of conception can also predispose one to hypertensive disorders during pregnancy. The objective of this study was to examine the association between contraceptive use at the time of conception and hypertensive complications during pregnancy. A total of 2,395 women aged 18-45 years participated in the 2007-2009 Michigan Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System. Contraception at the time of conception was self-reported by participants and classified as barrier, non-barrier, or non-use. Information on hypertensive disorders during pregnancy was primarily from birth certificates. Logistic regression was used to obtain odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) to model the contraception-hypertensive disorder association. After adjustment for age and race/ethnicity, there was no strong association between use of barrier contraception at the time of conception and hypertensive disorders during pregnancy as compared to non-users (OR 1.09, 95 % CI 0.62-1.92). After adjustment for the same variables, non-barrier users had 1.22 times the odds of experiencing hypertensive disorders during pregnancy as compared to non-users (95 % CI 0.75-1.98). Although we did not find an association between contraceptive use at the time of conception and hypertensive disorders during pregnancy, additional studies with larger sample sizes and more explicit categorization of the outcome variable are needed to confirm these findings. Measurements of sexual intercourse frequency are informative for research on pregnancy, contraception, and the transmission of sexually transmitted infections; however, efficiently collecting data on this sensitive topic is complex. The purpose of this study was to determine whether retrospective recall of sexual intercourse frequency was consistent with information obtained through the use of prospective daily diary methods corresponding to the same time period in a diverse sample of women. A total of 185 women participated in a longitudinal, prospective cohort study of oral contraceptive users and 98 of these women provided complete information on sexual intercourse frequency on diaries (prospective) and postcards (retrospective). Linear mixed models were used to test for variation in response within categories of demographic and other variables. The mean number of days women had sexual intercourse per week was 1.5 days using prospective diary information versus 2.0 days when using 3-month retrospective recall (p < 0.001). Mean differences for the various socio-demographic subgroups were positive for all groups indicating that women consistently reported a higher frequency of sexual intercourse on the retrospective postcards than they recorded on their prospective diaries; however, these mean differences did not vary significantly. If confirmed in other samples, the use of retrospective methods may be adequate to accurately collect data on sexual intercourse frequency--and may be preferable. Using only retrospective measurements could decrease study costs, the burden to participants, and have a higher response rate.
