Sport psychology is not just, as Riera says, the sportsman’s psychology; all people involves both directly and indirectly in such activity are potential subjects of that area. Judges and referees might be the closest people to the development and/or final result of a sport event. In this essay, the authors analyse the influence of psychological factors on these people at the moment of deciding and/or valuing the legality or the qualification on execution of athletes in sport competitions. The departing point is the conceptualisation of perception as an interactive response –not merely passive- of the organism in relation to the environment, following the interbehavioural approach. This allows us to analyse the actions of referees and judges according to the field model proposed by Kantor and Ribes, identifying the integrative elements, as well as their interrelationships. Here, the influence of such variables is valued –more specifically- as factors to be taken into account both in perception as in decision-making that may happen to judges and referees. Finally, some suggestions about future counselling are considered in order to improve both the judges and referees behaviour and their formation. KEY WORDS: arbitration and sport judgement, psychological variables, perception, decision-making, field model, interbehavioural approach.

With an increase in consumer demand of video gaming entertainment, the game industry is exploring novel ways of game interaction such as providing direct interfaces between the game and the gamers’ cognitive or affective responses. In this work, gamer’s brain activity has been imaged using functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) whilst they watch video of a video game (League of Legends) they play. A video of the face of the participants is also recorded for each of a total of 15 trials where a trial is defined as watching a gameplay video. From the data collected, i.e., gamer’s fNIRS data in combination with emotional state estimation from gamer’s facial expressions, the expertise level of the gamers has been decoded per trial in a multi-modal framework comprising of unsupervised deep feature learning and classification by state-of-the-art models. The best tri-class classification accuracy is obtained using a cascade of random convolutional kernel transform (ROCKET) feature extraction method and deep classifier at 91.44%. This is the first work that aims at decoding expertise level of gamers using non-restrictive and portable technologies for brain imaging, and emotional state recognition derived from gamers’ facial expressions. This work has profound implications for novel designs of future human interactions with video games and brain-controlled games.

Objectives Umbilical cord blood transplantation (UCBT) and haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (haplo-HSCT) modalities have been developed to offset the lack of matched donors. In this study, we compare the transfusion requirements of patients undergoing UCBT and haplo-HSCT in a single institution with the aim of providing additional information for clinicians to choose the most adequate alternative graft for HSCT. Methods The study reviewed 67 and 46 patients undergoing UCBT and haplo-HSCT, respectively. Results There were no significant differences for RBC and PLT requirements according to the transplantation modality. Median time to RBC transfusion independence was 35 and 25.5 days in patients who received an UCBT and haplo-HSCT, respectively (P = 0.38), while median time to platelet transfusion independence was 31 days for UCBT patients and 23 for haplo-HSCT patients (P < 0.001). Days until neutrophils > 0.5 x 10(9)/L were the only variable that significantly influenced RBC and PLT requirements for both transplantation modalities. Cumulative incidence of RBC and PLT transfusion independence at 90 days after transplantation was similar for both UCBT and haplo-HSCT. Conclusions Both transplantation platforms require prolonged and intensive supportive RBC and PLT transfusion therapy. Both transplantation platforms require prolonged and intensive supportive RBC and PLT transfusion therapy.

Nearly 50% of patients with de novo acute myeloid leukemia (AML) harbor an apparently normal karyotype (NK) by conventional cytogenetic techniques showing a very heterogeneous prognosis. This could be related to the presence of cryptic cytogenetic abnormalities (CC A) not detectable by conventional methods. The study of copy number alterations (CNA) and loss of heterozygozity (LOH) in hematological malignancies is possible using a high resolution SNP-array. Recently, in clinical practice the karyotype study has been complemented with the identification of point mutations in an increasing number of genes. We analyzed 252 de novo NK-AML patients from Hospital La Fe (n = 44) and from previously reported cohorts (n = 208) to identify CCA by SNP-array, and to integrate the analysis of CCA with molecular alterations detected by Next-Generation-sequencing. CCA were detected in 58% of patients. In addition, 49% of them harbored CNA or LOH and point mutations, simultaneously. Patients were grouped in 3 sets by their abnormalities: patients carrying several CCA simultaneously, patients with mutations in FLT3, NPM1 and/or DNMT3A and patients with an amalgam of mutations. We found a negative correlation between the number of CCA and the outcome of the patients. This study outlines that CCA are present in up to 50% of NK-AML patients and have a negative impact on the outcome. CCA may contribute to the heterogeneous prognosis.

functional Near-infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) is fast becoming an alternative optical neuroimaging modality to functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) owing to its portable, non-constrained environment. With the advent of fNIRS numerous studies, and key populations once considered indecipherable because of multitude operational challenges associated with fMRI such as restriction to stay in a supine position motionless surrounded by huge magnets, can now be read into. In this work, brain activity of participants, who are gamers of varying expertise levels, watch images or videos of a game, League of Legends, is recorded using fNIRS. The participant’s fNIRS data is then analysed to distinguish between expertise levels of gamers using a support vector machine classifier with a radial basis function kernel. Our results demonstrate the adequacy of using fNIRS data to distinguish between the expertise levels of participants. In particular, the classification accuracy is optimum for novice vs. intermediate participants followed by novices vs. experts for all experiments. The least accurate classification results obtained are for intermediates vs. experts. An attempt is also made to read from different dimensions of hemoglobin to establish which biomarker best respresents the neural activity in the brain. Since the methods employed are independent of the study, we believe this work has strong implications for a professional’s objective assessment which is paramount for those occupations especially associated with greater risks e.g. surgeons, pilots.

3-Phenyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-1,3-benzoxazine (m1) underwent cationic ring opening polymerization using BF3·OEt2 in alcoholic solution under mild conditions. The polymerization of m1 proceeds through an intermediate hemiaminal ether leading mainly to the formation of polybenzoxazines with diphenylmethane bridges, and not only the classical Mannich-type ones. During the first stages of the reaction, low-molecular weight soluble oligomers containing benzoxazine rings are formed. At longer polymerization times, the propagation proceeds conventionally through the phenolic active sites. This polymerization mechanism is extensible to other substituted 3-phenyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-1,3-benzoxazines but fails in the case of 3-alkyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-1,3-benzoxazines or when the phenyl group in Position 3 have a substituent in the p-position. Spectroscopic studies and kinetic experiments using model reactions and deuterium labeled benzoxazines, allow proposing a plausible different polymerization mechanism. These soluble benzoxazine-containing polymers can be conveniently processed and impregnated on appropriate substrates before underwent crosslinking producing materials with comparable properties to those of conventional bis-benzoxazines. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The autocatalytic thermal polymerization behavior of three benzoxazine monomers containing carboxylic acid functionalities is reported. Several mixtures of these carboxylic monomers and 3-phenyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-1,3-benzoxazine were prepared and their thermal polymerization behavior was analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry. The acid character of these reactive monomers increases the concentration of oxonium species, thus catalyzing the benzoxazine ring opening reaction. In this way the polymerization temperature decreased by as much as 100 °C in some cases. The existence of decarboxylation processes at high temperatures has been established by FTIR-ATR and related to the increase in thermal stability observed by TGA in some cases. A relationship between the presence of carboxylic groups in the resulting materials and their flame retardancy behavior has also been established. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report the synthesis of several substituted 3,4-dihydro-2H-1,3-benzoxazines by simple ring closure of 2-hydroxybenzylamines with paraformaldehyde. The facile synthesis of the benzylamine precursors from commercially available salicylaldehyde derivatives affords a powerful general synthetic way to prepare a variety of substituted benzoxazines, avoiding the formation of undesirable oligomeric species, thus leading to a simple workup and improving the yield and purity of the final product. This straightforward method allows synthesis of hydroxy-substituted and deuterium-labeled 1,3-benzoxazines that are not attainable using other synthetic ways.

To evaluate the influence of the electronic effects on the polymerization temperature, we looked at several 3-phenyl-3,4-dihydro-2-H-1,3-benzoxazine monomers with electron-withdrawing or electron-donating groups in the 6 and 4' positions. The monomers were synthesized and characterized using different synthetic methods to achieve the best possible results. The thermal polymerization of these benzoxazine monomers was analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry, and the polymerization behavior and the polymer characteristics were related to the electronic character of the substituent and the polymerization mechanism.

A new oxazolidine derivative was obtained from phenol, 2-amino-2-methylpropane-1,3-diol and paraformaldehyde. The reaction of this novel oxazolidine diol with phenylisocyanate lead to a urethane model compound which can be polymerized thermally by oxazolidine ring opening to give a Mannich bridge structure. Linear segmented polyurethanes were prepared by reaction of different ratios of oxazolidine diol and commercial polyethylenglycol (M w ∼ 400) with 4,4'-methylenbis (cyclohexylisocyanate) (HMDI, 90% isomers mixture). The polyurethanes were thermally characterized and crosslinked by oxazolidine ring opening to obtain materials which showed improved thermal stability.

Benzoxazines derived from aniline and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid and from phenol and 4-aminobenzoic acid were prepared with two different synthetic approaches. When the carboxylic group reacted with epichlorohydrin, glycidylic derivatives M-1 and M-2, respectively, were obtained. The ring opening of benzoxazine and epoxy took place simultaneously with no catalyst for both monomers. Likewise, both ring-opening polymerizations took place when boron trifluoride monoethylamine (BF3·MEA) or 4-(N,N-dimethylamino)pyridine was used as a catalyst for M-1. However, for M-2, when BF3·MEA was used as a catalyst, the epoxy and benzoxazine ring openings could be distinguished, and a polyether intermediate containing benzoxazine side chains could be obtained. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this paper first results on the growth of thin layers of Al 2 O 3 , HfO 2 and nanolaminates of them, by Atomic Layer Deposition are reported. The electrical characterization of the deposited layers has been carried out by means of the analysis of the capacitance-voltage and current-voltage characteristics of Aluminum-high-k dielectric-Silicon capacitors. The obtained results show that for the same physical thickness, HfO 2 layers are leakier than Al 2 O 3 layers and that a nanolaminate stack of them improves the performance of the dielectric in terms of current and breakdown voltage although at the expense of a higher EOT.

The nonlinear optical properties of new tetrathiafulvalenes and 1,3‐dithioles have been studied using first principle methods. The higher hyperpolarizabilities of the extended 1,3‐dithioles compared to Tetrathiafulvalene analogs are explained on the basis of the less localized HOMO of the former giving rise to higher transition dipole moments and a more pronounced decrease of the HOMO‐LUMO gap on chain extension.

This paper addresses challenges associated with the dynamics of knowledge in clusters and regional networks. It develops a conceptual framework, a methodology and a research agenda. The focus is on mapping and analyzing clustered firms and their linkages. Network analysis is proposed to find patterns of knowledge transfer and learning that differ according to firms absorptive capacities and the nature of the involved knowledge flows. System Dynamics modeling is then put forward in order to analyze within-cluster interactions as a series of knowledge stocks and knowledge flows. The goal is to assess the sustainability and stability of the cluster from a knowledge perspective (e.g. virtuous learning patterns), the effects of ICT on knowledge flows, and overall cluster performance. The paper provides a new perspective and a methodological approach to understand the dynamics of innovation in clusters and regional economies, and derive policy implications.

Objective: To study the characteristics of the haemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelets (HELLP) syndrome in the antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) and its influence on the subsequent pregnancies. Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of 16 episodes of HELLP complicating APS in 15 women. Results: HELLP was complete in 10 cases and partial in six. It occurred during the second trimester in seven cases (the earliest at 18 weeks' gestation), the third trimester in seven cases, and the day following delivery in two cases. Pre-eclampsia was present in six cases and eclampsia in five. Outcome of pregnancies was: live birth (n = 8), stillbirth (n = 2) and fetal death (n = 6). APS was primary in nine women and secondary to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in six. HELLP revealed primary APS in six cases. Seven women were not treated. Low dose aspirin was empirically prescribed in one woman whose APS had been undiagnosed despite a history of two fetal deaths. In the other women, therapy consisted of aspirin (n = 8), low molecular weight heparin with a dose varying between 3000 and 12 000 U daily (n = 5), and high dose immunoglobulin every 4 weeks (n = 2), hydroxychloroquine (n = 4), and prednisone (n = 6). Six women had seven subsequent pregnancies, 3–6 years after the complicated pregnancy. HELLP recurred at 33 weeks' gestation in one woman with SLE treated with prednisone, hydroxychloroquine, aspirin, and enoxaparin, and pregnancy ended in live birth. One woman became pregnant after in vitro fertilisation and embryo transfer, but pregnancy ended in fetal death despite prednisone, hydroxychloroquine, and enoxaparin. Four women had five uneventful pregnancies with 100 mg daily aspirin and heparin. Conclusions: APS may be revealed by HELLP. In APS, HELLP is associated with pre-eclampsia/eclampsia in most cases and seems to occur earlier than in the general population. Heparin plus aspirin may prevent obstetric complications in the subsequent pregnancies.

The goal of the present work was to study urinary tract infections (UTI) in a sociosanitary center in order to characterize etiology, define sensitivity profiles, and study associations between these profiles and various clinical parameters.A prospective study of all urinary tract infections at the caring unit of a geriatric sociosanitary center was carried out. Antibiograms were performed on all patients in which a UTI was suspected, and the association between the isolated organism or E. coli resistance with various clinical parameters (gender, bed confinement, recurrence, incontinence, neural impairment, basic daily life activities and drug use) was studied using a multivariate logistic regression analysis.Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis are the most commonly isolated organisms (51% and 15%, respectively). The former is associated with bed confinement and the female gender. The latter shows an inverse relation with recurrence in 90 days. Resistance to the antibiotics studied correlates with a number of clinical parameters, although associations vary for each antimicrobial agent. Previous use of antibiotics and recurrence of infection have no influence on resistance.Geriatric patients' characteristics may well account for some of the results encountered. However, the development of resistance in the center may be related to spreading from direct contact between patients. The relationship between resistance and drug use may be affected by the external administration, rather than in-center administration, of drugs.

Early transplant-related mortality after cord blood transplantation from unrelated donors (UD-CBT) is close to 50%, mainly due to infectious complications. We have studied the incidence and characteristics of early infections (before day 100) in a series of 27 adult patients (median age 30 years, range 16-46) undergoing UD-CBT at a single institution. All 27 patients experienced at least one infectious episode and 18 (66%) suffered a severe infection. Bacteremia occurred in 55% of patients (13 with Gram-positive and 11 with Gram-negative microorganisms). Eleven of 19 CMV-seropositive patients (58%) developed CMV antigenemia and one patient had CMV disease. Fungal infections were documented in three patients (11%), comprising invasive fungal infections in two cases and a localized esophagitis in one. Ten patients (37%) died before day 100 after transplantation. Infection was considered the primary cause of death in four patients (sepsis by Acinetobacter spp. bacteremia in three cases) and contributed to death in another four. The most striking findings in this series were the high incidence of, and mortality due to multiresistant Acinetobacter spp. and the low incidence of and lack of mortality due to CMV disease. This report confirms that infection is a major complication in adults undergoing UD-CBT.

Eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection has been associated with the correction of thrombocytopenia in patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). We have analysed the response to eradication of H. pylori in a series of 56 adult patients with chronic ITP. Forty patients had H. pylori infection (71%) that was eradicated in 23 of 32 evaluable patients (72%). Platelet counts did not significantly vary according to H. pylori treatment outcome. Three of 56 patients (5%) achieved a partial response attributable to H. pylori eradication. Therefore, detection of H. pylori infection should not be routinely included in the initial work-up of ITP.

The potential role of unrelated donor cord blood transplantation (UD-CBT) in adults is not well established. We report the results of UD-CBT in nine adult patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). The median age was 27 years (range, 19-41 years), and the median weight was 62 kg (range, 45-78 kg). At transplant, six patients were in chronic phase (five in first, and one in second), two in blast crisis, and one in accelerated phase. Eight had received intensive chemotherapy, and three had undergone autologous peripheral blood hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Four had received interferon with no cytogenetic response, and only three underwent UD-CBT within 1 year of diagnosis. After serological typing for class I antigens, and high-resolution DNA typing for DRB1, the degree of HLA match between patients and cord blood (CB) units was 4/6 in six cases and 5/6 in three cases. The median number of nucleated cells infused was 1.7 x 10(7)/kg (range, 1.2 to 4.9 x 10(7)/kg), and was above 2 x 10(7)/kg in only two cases. All patients received thiotepa, busulfan, cyclophosphamide and anti-thymocyte globulin as conditioning; cyclosporine and prednisone for graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis; and G-CSF from day +7 until engraftment. All seven evaluable cases engrafted. The median time to reach an absolute neutrophil count > or =0.5 x 10(9)/l and > or =1 x 10(9)/l was 22 days (range, 19-52 days) and 28 days (range, 23-64 days), respectively. In the four patients evaluable for platelet recovery time to levels of > or =20 x 10(9) platelets/l, > or =50 x 10(9) platelets/l, and > or =100 x 10(9) platelets/l, these ranged from 50 to 128 days, 60 to 139 days, and 105 to 167 days, respectively. Three patients developed acute GVHD above grade II, and three of the five patients at risk developed extensive chronic GVHD. Four patients, all transplanted in chronic phase, remain alive in molecular remission more than 18, 19, 24 and 42 months after transplantation. These preliminary results suggest that UD-CBT may be considered a reasonable alternative in adults with CML who lack an appropriate bone marrow donor.

Veno-occlusive disease of the liver (VOD) is a common and severe complication of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). To determine the incidence of, and the risk factors for the development of VOD, we performed a retrospective analysis of a series of 178 patients, who underwent allogeneic HSCT at our institution between 1990 and 1999. Busulfan and cyclophosphamide constituted the conditioning regimen most frequently administered. Bone marrow was the source of stem cells in 129 patients (73%), and peripheral blood (PBSC) in 49 patients (27%). Thirty-one patients of the PBSC group received CD34+ positively selected grafts. Most patients were given cyclosporin A and methotrexate (MTX) as graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis. Overall, 30 patients (17%) developed VOD. In univariate analyses, the incidence of VOD was significantly higher in recipients of unmanipulated grafts (20% vs 0%; P = 0.01), in patients with active malignant disease at transplantation (24% vs 9%; P = 0.03), in recipients of marrow from unrelated donors (33% vs 15%; P = 0.03), in patients grafted with bone marrow (21% vs 6%; P = 0.03), and in those receiving MTX as GVHD prophylaxis (21% vs 6%; P = 0.05). Under multivariate analysis, only CD34+ positive selection (P = 0.0004) and the status of the disease at transplant (P = 0.03) were statistically significant variables for the development of VOD. We conclude that CD34+ positively selected PBSC transplantation could result in a marked reduction in the incidence of VOD after allogeneic HSCT. Bone Marrow Transplantation (2001) 27, 983–988.

The object of this paper was to analyze the epidemiological factors that contribute to congenital dislocation of the hip (CDH) in our setting.A comparative study of the obstetrical and perinatal risk factors of a series of 72 newborns with CDH was carried out. These newborns were compared with a sample of 973 healthy newborns. The following factors were analyzed: sex, birth weight, fetal posture, type of delivery, duration of the pushing stage of labor, family history, single or multiple birth, age of parents, firstborn status and season of birth using the Pearson Chi-square test for the qualitative variables and the Mann-Whitney U for the quantitative variables.A statistically significant values (p0.05) was found for: sex, fetal posture, type of delivery, firstborn status and month of birth. Forty-nine (68%) of the newborns with CDH had two or more of these risk factors. When encountering a female newborn, with a breech posture or distocic delivery, from a primipara mother and born in November, a more rigorous examination and follow-up of that newborn should be carried out in order to rule out this pathology.

Abstract 702 Despite that low and intermediate-1 (int-1) IPSS groups are commonly considered as low risk diseases with a median overall survival exceeding 60 months, some of these patients will evolve as higher risk myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Recently several new prognosis indexes (PI) have been proposed: The new IPSSr, WPSSr, MD Anderson for lower risk patients (MDA) Index, and the Spanish Group of MDS (GESMD) proposal that considers as high risk those patients with int-1 IPSS and at least one of the following: platelets A total of 2410 patients from the Spanish registry of MDS with low or int-1 IPSS were included. Median age was 74 years (42.6% female). The IPSS value was of: 0, 0.5 and 1 in 1314, 761 and 335 patients, respectively. The four poor risk variables defined by the GESMD confirmed its adverse predictive value for OS: granulocytes The distribution of patients across the four PI is detailed in the Table. These new PI identified between 16.9% and 46% of patients having a median OS of around 30 months within the int-1 patients (wide line in the table), but none of the PIs could identify such a poor prognosis patients in the low IPSS group. The PI that identified the highest number of patients with shorter OS was the new IPSSr, while MDA IP was the most discriminative in the Akaike analysis. In conclusion, IPSS is not discriminative enough in the int-1 group. In contrast, the application of the new PI can be employed to better identify poor prognosis patients within the int-1 group who could benefit from a high-risk approach. Table. The reduction of Zn(II) has been studied by means of the faradaic impedance method in wide potential and frequency ranges and at varied water activity. The results obtained could be quantitatively explained on the assumption of a mechanism including at least the following consecutive steps: 1. (1) fast partial dehydration of the electroactive species; 2. (2) fast transport from the solution into the double layer; 3. (3) slow transfer of the first electron; 4. (4) a fast second partial dehydration step; 5. (5) slow transfer of the second electron. The hydration number of the Zn2+ ions in the solution was obtained from the shift of E 1 2 r and Eox with water activity, and was found to agree fairly well with the results obtained from the kinetic study.
