During a soil survey for Mucorales in a semiarid region of the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, a specimen of Absidia (URM 8213) was isolated. Both morphological and phylogenetic analyses (ITS and LSU rDNA regions) of this specimen showed that it is a new species. The new species differs from other species in the genus in its ability to concomitantly produce isolated or whorled sporangiophores of up to 8 with fig-shaped and hemispherical columellae, as well as globose, subglobose, and cylindrical sporangiospores. Thus, in this study, we propose a new species of Absidia.

Mucor minutus (Baijal & B.S. Mehrotra) Schipper is described for the first time from northeastern Brazil. The specimen was isolated from the soil of Florestas do Jussará, an upland forest fragment in Pernambuco state. In Brazil, M. minutus has previously been isolated only from the state of São Paulo from the soil of the Atlantic Forest. The occurrence of M. minutus in Florestas do Jussará is presented and discussed, and a detailed description and illustration of the specimen are presented. This article contributes to the knowledge of mucoralean distribution.

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) readers are the main bottleneck when building an RFID system. The cost of the readers can be high, and these devices can be bulky. Moreover, when these RFID readers have to be included in a small mobile device, the cost increases, or the system becomes more complex to put together.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of using conventional productivity-enhancing technologies (PETs) with or without other natural PETs on the growth performance, carcass traits, and environmental impacts of feedlot cattle. A total of 768 cross-bred yearling steers (499 ± 28.6 kg; n = 384) and heifers (390 ± 34.9 kg; n = 384) were offered a barley grain-based basal diet and divided into implanted or non-implanted groups. Steers were then allocated to diets that contained either: (i) no additive (control); natural feed additives including (ii) fibrolytic enzymes (Enz), (iii) essential oil (Oleo), (iv) direct-fed microbial (DFM), (v) DFM + Enz + Oleo combination; conventional feed additives including (vi) Conv (monensin, tylosin, and beta-adrenergic agonists [βAA]); or Conv with natural feed additives including (vii) Conv + DFM + Enz; (viii) Conv + DFM + Enz + Oleo. Heifers received one of the first three dietary treatments or the following: (iv) probiotic (Citr); (v) Oleo + Citr; (vi) Melengesterol acetate (MGA) + Oleo + βAA; (vii) Conv (monensin, tylosin, βAA, and MGA); or (viii) Conv + Oleo (ConvOleo). Data were used to estimate greenhouse gas (GHG) and ammonia (NH3) emissions, as well as land and water use. The lateral cyclic loaded piles' behaviour in bonded residual soil is still poorly understood by classical geotechnics. Currently used models reproduce the behaviour of residual soils based on those from other unstructured soils, resulting in a conservative design. This paper thus proposes to evaluate the behaviour of three different shapes of steel piles embedded in bonded residual soil when submitted to cyclic lateral loading tests. These tests encompassed 10 mm displacements performed on the top of the piles (considering service (working) displacements). The piles, with a length of 2·0 m, were equipped with strain gauges at ten levels. The evaluated cross-sections have circular, square and H shapes, all with similar inertia moment and diameter/edge of 0·15 m. The effect of cyclic loading has shown a degradation of available lateral load, mostly in the first 30 cycles. This degradation is also seen at the bending moments obtained. The piles have also shown a short free-headed behaviour that rotates from a certain depth. Finally, the study showed that the square cross-section-shaped pile had the best performance under service (working) cyclic displacements when embedded in bonded residual soil, followed by H cross-sectioned pile and finally the circular cross-sectioned pile.

During a survey of the diversity of Mucorales in Atlantic Forest and upland rainforest soils in northeastern Brazil, two strains belonging to Absidia were isolated. These strains are morphologically and molecularly (nuc rDNA internal transcribed spacer ITS1–5.8–ITS2 and D1–D2 domains of nuc 28S rDNA) distinct from other Absidia species. Absidia cornuta sp. nov. presents exclusively cylindrical sporangiospores and up to three projections on columellae. Absidia pernambucoensis sp. nov. presents up to two apical projections on columellae and produces two types of sporangiospores: cylindrical and slightly cuneiform. Based on morphological and phylogenetic evidence, two new species of Absidia are proposed. An identification key for the species of Absidia with cylindrical sporangiospores found in the Neotropics is provided.

The repeated observation of dog dung covered by abundant white cottony mycelium in a private garden in the city of Rio de Janeiro, state of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) prompted an investigation to clarify the identity of the fungus involved. Three different species of mucoralean fungi (together with some ascomycete asexual morphs) were present. Two were identified as belonging to Mycotypha sp. and Thamnostylum sp., and the third belonged to Mucor sp. This publication deals with the full taxonomic elucidation of the latter. Based on morphological, physiological, and molecular data (ITS and LSU rDNA regions), it was recognized that this Mucor differed from all other species. It produces strongly sympodially circinate branched sporangiophores (some with up to four septa) with numerous swellings resembling abortive sporangia. It also has cylindrical, obovoid, pyriform, or ovoid columellae and its sporangiospores are mostly ellipsoid, although some are subglobose and others are irregular. Based on the evidence of the analyzed datasets, the new species Mucor merdophylus is hereby proposed.

The Red River is one of the largest contributing sources of discharge and nutrients to the world’s 10th largest freshwater lake, the Lake Winnipeg. Conversion of large areas of annual crop land to perennial forages has been proposed as a strategy to reduce nutrient export to Lake Winnipeg. Such reductions could occur through either reduced concentration of nutrients in runoff or through changes in the basin-scale hydrology, resulting in lower water yield and concomitant export of nutrients. This study assessed the latter mechanism by using the physically based Cold Regions Hydrological Modelling platform to examine the hydrological impacts of land use conversion from annual crops to perennial forages in a sub-basin of the La Salle River Basin. This basin is a typical agricultural sub-basin in the Red River Valley, characterised by flat topography, clay soils, and a cold sub-humid, continental climate. Long-term simulations (1992–2013) of the major components of water balance were compared between canola and smooth bromegrass, representing a conversion from annual cropping systems to perennial forage. An uncertainty framework was used to represent a range of fall soil saturation status (30 % to 70 %), which govern the infiltration to frozen soil in subsequent spring. The model simulations indicated that, on average, there was a 32.6 ± 3.7 % (31.6 ± 4.0 mm) reduction in annual cumulative discharge and a 17.6 ± 10.0 % (1.4 ± 0.9 m3 s-1) reduction in annual peak discharge due to forage conversion over the assessed period. These reductions were driven by reduced overland flow (42.7 ± 8.3 %, 30.8 ± 6.3 mm), increased peak snowpack (8.1 %, 7.8 mm), and enhanced infiltration to frozen soils (61.9 ± 4.0 %, 131.9 ± 8.0 mm). Higher cumulative evapotranspiration (ET) from perennial forages (33.8 % ± 0.7 %, 92.3 ± 1.8 mm) was also predicted by the simulations. Overall, daily soil moisture under perennial forage was 14.0 % (44.9 mm) higher than that of crop simulation likely due to the higher SWE and enhanced infiltration. However, the impact of forage conversion on daily soil moisture varied interannually. Soil moisture under perennial forage stands could be either higher or lower than that of annual crops, depending on antecedent spring snowmelt infiltration volumes.

The Northern Great Plains is a key region to global food production. It is also a region of water stress that includes poor water quality associated with high concentrations of nutrients. Agricultural nitrogen and phosphorus loads to surface waters need to be reduced, yet the unique characteristics of this environment create challenges. The biophysical reality of the Northern Great Plains is one where snowmelt is the major period of nutrient transport, and where nutrients are exported predominantly in dissolved form. This limits the efficacy of many beneficial management practices (BMPs) commonly used in other regions and necessitates place-based solutions. We discuss soil and water management BMPs through a regional lens—first understanding key aspects of hydrology and hydrochemistry affecting BMP efficacy, then discussing the merits of different BMPs for nutrient control. We recommend continued efforts to “keep water on the land” via wetlands and reservoirs. Adoption and expansion of reduced tillage and perennial forage may have contributed to current nutrient problems, but both practices have other environmental and agronomic benefits. The expansion of tile and surface drainage in the Northern Great Plains raises urgent questions about effects on nutrient export and options to mitigate drainage effects. Riparian vegetation is unlikely to significantly aid in nutrient retention, but when viewed against an alternative of extending cultivation and fertilization to the waters’ edge, the continued support of buffer strip management and refinement of best practices (e.g., harvesting vegetation) is merited. While the hydrology of the Northern Great Plains creates many challenges for mitigating nutrient losses, it also creates unique opportunities. For example, relocating winter bale-grazing to areas with low hydrologic connectivity should reduce loadings. Managing nutrient applications must be at the center of efforts to mitigate eutrophication. In this region, ensuring nutrients are not applied during hydrologically sensitive periods such as late autumn, on snow, or when soils are frozen will yield benefits. Working to ensure nutrient inputs are balanced with crop demands is crucial in all landscapes. Ultimately, a targeted approach to BMP implementation is required, and this must consider the agronomic and economic context but also the biophysical reality.

In a survey mucoralean fungi in the Brejo da Serra do Benedito, a fragment of Upland Forest in the semi-arid region of Pernambuco, Brazil, a specimen of Backusella gigacellularis was isolated. So far, B. gigacellularis (holotype) had only been isolated from soil in the Cerrado domain, in São Paulo state, southeastern Brazil. This is the second report of B. gigacellularis worldwide, and the first record to northeastern Brazil. A detailed description, as well as the illustration of the specimen, are presented. Resumo Em um levantamento de espécies de fungos Mucorales no Brejo da Serra do Benedito, um Brejo de altitude do semi-árido pernambucano, Brasil, um espécime de Backusella gigacellularis foi isolado. Até o momento, B. gigacellularis (holótipo) só havia sido isolada de solo no Domínio Cerrado, no estado de São Paulo, sudeste do Brasil. Este é segundo registro mundial de B. gigacellularis e o primeiro para o nordeste do Brasil, especificamente em um a área de Brejo de altitude. Nesse trabalho, são apresentadas uma descrição detalhada e ilustração do espécime isolado.

Greenhouse gas emissions from backgrounding and finishing cattle with and without the use of growth-enhancing technologies (GET) were estimated using a whole-farm model, Holos (www.agr.gc.ca/holos-ghg). Model inputs were obtained from a four-year performance study using heifers (H) and steers (S) with six treatments (n = 40 hd treatment-1 yr-1): 1) H control (HCon); 2) H implanted (HTBA); 3) H melengestrol acetate (HMGA); 4) S control (SCon); 5) S implanted (STBA); and 6) S implanted + ractopamine hydrochloride (SRAC; conducted in the last two years). All cattle were finished to achieve a consistent number of days on feed (DOF; n = 233 ± 8). Lighter finish weights were observed for HCon and SCon. As a result, DOF were adjusted (-1 to 65 d) to achieve the same final weight as GET-treated cattle. Total emissions (kg CO2e head-1) were greater for Hcon_AdjHTBA (2967 ± 183) and HCon_AdjHMGA (2766 ± 84), than HTBA (2897 ± 184) and HMGA (2730 ± 81). Similarly, total emissions (kg CO2e head-1) for SCon_AdjSTBA (3169 ± 192) and SCon_AdjSRAC (3252 ± 202) were greater than STBA (2998 ± 153) and SRAC (3097 ± 185), respectively. On an intensity basis, (kg CO2e kg slaughter weight-1), emissions from GET-treated cattle [HTBA (4.49 ± 0.19), HMGA (4.39 ± 0.13), STBA (4.28 ± 0.17), and SRAC (4.31 ± 0.25)] were lower than HCon_AdjHTBA (4.60 ± 0.21), HCon_AdjHMGA (4.45 ± 0.18), SCon_AdjSTBA (4.52 ± 0.23), and SCon_AdjSRAC (4.52 ± 0.28), respectively. Furthermore, land-use (ha 100 kg slaughter weight-1) was reduced for GET-treated cattle (HTBA (0.068 ± 0.001), HMGA (0.067 ± 0.001), STBA (0.066 ± 0.001), and SRAC (0.067 ± 0.000)) compared to HCon_AdjTBA (0.071 ± 0.001), HCon_AdjMGA (0.069 ± 0.002), SCon_AdjTBA (0.072 ± 0.002), and SCon_AdjRAC (0.0073 ± 0.001), respectively. This study demonstrates that GETs can reduce the environmental footprint of beef cattle.

This study estimated movement of feed between regions of Alberta to meet the needs of the beef sector in 2001, 2006, 2011 and 2016, and included barley and wheat grain, grass hay and grass-legume hay, which can be cost-effectively transported. Feed demands of beef and other livestock (i.e., dairy cattle, chickens, pigs, sheep, bison, horses, turkeys and other poultry) were estimated using county-level inventories from Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development and Statistics Canada, and aggregated to 7 land-use regions: Lower Athabasca, Upper Athabasca, Lower Peace, Upper Peace, North Saskatchewan, Red Deer and South Saskatchewan. Feed requirements were sourced from literature and expert opinion pertinent to Canadian context, and feed demand estimated using annualized feeding days and dry matter (DM) intake. Feed available for beef production was estimated from crop yields minus other livestock feed use. Average feed demand for beef production across Alberta was (tons of DM) 2.71 M, 0.68 M, 2.21 M, and 1.95 M for barley and wheat grain, grass hay, and grass-legume hay, respectively. North Saskatchewan, Red Deer and South Saskatchewan accounted for 90% of the total demand for barley and wheat grain and 81% of grass hay and grass-legume hay. South Saskatchewan had the largest feed deficit and required feed movement in all years. Across years, barley grain deficits ranged from -94% to -31%, grass hay deficit from -142% to a surplus of 1.6% and grass-legume hay deficits from -167% to -15%. Unmet deficits at provincial level occurred for barley grain (2006), grass hay (2001) and grass-legume hay (2001, 2006). Wheat was surplus in all years, ranging from 17% to 90%. Feed movement is critical to support beef production in Alberta, and is highly variable depending on crop yield in different regions. This analysis enables the beef industry to assess provincial feed sourcing and environmental footprints.

We have simulated the motion of a single vertical, two-dimensional liquid bridge spanning the gap between two flat, horizontal solid substrates of given wettabilities, using a multicomponent pseudopotential lattice Boltzmann method. For this simple geometry, the Young–Laplace equation can be solved (quasi-)analytically to yield the equilibrium bridge shape under gravity, which provides a check on the validity of the numerical method. In steady-state conditions, we calculate the drag force exerted by the moving bridge on the confining substrates as a function of its velocity, for different contact angles and Bond numbers. We also study how the bridge deforms as it moves, as parametrized by the changes in the advancing and receding contact angles at the substrates relative to their equilibrium values. Finally, starting from a bridge within the range of contact angles and Bond numbers in which it can exist at equilibrium, we investigate how fast it must move in order to break up.

Despite the perception of being one of the most agriculturally productive regions globally, crop production in Alberta, a western province of Canada, is strongly dependent on highly variable climate and water resources. We developed agro-hydrological models to assess the water footprint (WF) of barley by simulating future crop yield (Y) and consumptive water use (CWU) within the agricultural region of Alberta. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was used to develop rainfed and irrigated barley Y simulation models adapted to sixty-seven and eleven counties, respectively through extensive calibration, validation, sensitivity, and uncertainty analysis. Eighteen downscaled climate projections from nine General Circulation Models (GCMs) under the Representative Concentration Pathways 2.6 and 8.5 for the 2040-2064 period were incorporated into the calibrated SWAT model. Based on the ensemble of GCMs, rainfed barley yield is projected to increase while irrigated barley is projected to remain unchanged in Alberta. Results revealed a considerable decrease (maximum 60%) in WF to 2064 relative to the simulated baseline 1985-2009 WF. Less water will also be required to produce barley in northern Alberta (rainfed barley) than southern Alberta (irrigated barley) due to reduced water consumption. The modeled WF data adjusted for water stress conditions and found a remarkable change (increase/decrease) in the irrigated counties. Overall, the research framework and the locally adapted regional model results will facilitate the development of future water policies in support of better climate adaptation strategies by providing improved WF projections.

Real-time frequency agility is one of the key limitations of current all-digital transmitters (ADTs). In this paper, to address this problem, an ADT based on direct-RF generation is proposed and implemented in a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). To achieve this, the pulse encoding is performed after the digital upconversion, which presents challenges in the pulse encoder implementation. However, the proposed design considerably improves the frequency agility when compared with current state-of-the-art approaches. Two different pulse encoders were designed in this paper, one is based on pulsewidth modulation (PWM) and the other on delta–sigma modulation ( $\mathrm {\Delta \Sigma }\text{M}$ ). These units are implemented with high parallelization to achieve the required equivalent sampling rates. The proposed design enables the implementation of all-digital RF transmitters in FPGA with a widely tunable carrier frequency. In this paper, a variation from 0.1 up to 6 GHz of carrier frequency, with a maximum frequency resolution of 1.5625 MHz, is demonstrated. Measurement results in terms of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and error-vector magnitude are presented and discussed. In the case of the PWM, maximum SNRs of 39 and 36 dB were obtained for a 5 and 10 MBd of symbol rates (SRs). In the case of $\mathrm {\Delta \Sigma }\text{M}$ , maximum SNRs of 38 and 35 dB were obtained for 20 and 40 MBd of the SR.

This paper presents a new all-digital transceiver architecture fully integrated into a single field-programmable gate array chip. Both the radio frequency (RF) receiver and the transmitter were entirely implemented using a digital datapath from the baseband up to the RF stage without the use of conventional analog-to-digital converter, digital-to-analog converter, or analog mixer. The transmitter chain uses delta-sigma modulation and digital upconversion to produce a two-level RF output signal. The receiver uses a high-speed comparator and pulsewidth modulation to convert the RF signal into a single-bit data stream, which is digitally filtered and then downconverted. Both the transmitter and the receiver are agile with flexible carrier frequency, bandwidth, and modulation capabilities. The transceiver error vector magnitude and the signal-to-noise ratio figures of merit were analyzed in a point-to-point transmission to evaluate the transmitter’s performance. The results show the feasibility of this approach as a more flexible alternative to common radio architectures.

In the last 43 years several hints were reported suggesting the existence of granular superconductivity above room temperature in different graphite-based systems. In this paper, some of the results are reviewed, giving special attention to those obtained in water and n-heptane treated graphite powders, commercial and natural bulk graphite samples with different characteristics as well as transmission electron microscope lamellae. The overall results indicate that superconducting regions exist and are localized at certain internal interfaces of the graphite structure. The existence of the rhombohedral graphite phase in all samples with superconducting-like properties suggests its interfaces with the Bernal phase as a possible origin for the high-temperature superconductivity, as theoretical calculations predict. High precision electrical resistance and magnetization measurements were used to identify a transition at $$T_\mathrm{c} \gtrsim 350~$$ K. To check for the existence of true zero resistance paths in the samples we used local magnetic measurements, which results support the existence of superconducting regions at such high temperatures.

The depletion of water resources, in terms of both quantity and quality, has become a major concern both locally and globally. Ruminants, in particular, are under increased public scrutiny due to their relatively high water use per unit of meat or milk produced. Estimating the water footprint of livestock production is a relatively new field of research for which methods are still evolving. This review describes the approaches used to quantify water use in ruminant production systems as well as the methodological and conceptual issues associated with each approach. Water use estimates for the main products from ruminant production systems are also presented, along with possible management strategies to reduce water use. In the past, quantifying water withdrawal in ruminant production focused on the water demand for drinking or operational purposes. Recently, the recognition of water as a scarce resource has led to the development of several methodologies including water footprint assessment, life cycle assessment, and livestock water productivity to assess water use and its environmental impacts. These methods differ with respect to their target outcome (efficiency or environmental impacts), geographic focus (local or global), description of water sources (green, blue, and gray), handling of water quality concerns, the interpretation of environmental impacts, and the metric by which results are communicated (volumetric units or impact equivalents). Ruminant production is a complex activity where animals are often reared at different sites using a range of resources over their lifetime. Additional water use occurs during slaughter, product processing, and packaging. Estimating water use at the various stages of meat and milk production and communicating those estimates will help producers and other stakeholders identify hotspots and implement strategies to improve water use efficiency. Improvements in ruminant productivity (i.e., BW and milk production) and reproductive efficiency can also reduce the water footprint per unit product. However, given that feed production makes up the majority of water use by ruminants, research and development efforts should focus on this area. More research and clarity are needed to examine the validity of assumptions and possible trade-offs between ruminants' water use and other sustainability indicators.

Severely immunocompromised patients are at increased risk for uncommon infectious diseases with atypical presentations. Fusarium sp., has been reported in patients with hematological malignancies and prompt diagnosis is necessary due to high mortality. We report a myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) patient who presented Fusarium solani infection associated with granulocytic sarcoma as an initial presentation of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) transformation. We performed histological examination, immunohistochemistry analysis, culture of the biopsy tissue and DNA sequencing to make a conclusive diagnosis of F. solani and granulocytic sarcoma, reinforcing the necessity of performing complete evaluation of skin lesions in immunocompromised patients.

This study analyzes the lipid composition and the oxidative stability of oils of Sapindaceae and Meliaceae seeds. The oil content ranged from 14.7% (Guarea guidonia) to 30.1% (Allophylus puberulus and Paullinia elegans). Ten fatty acids were identified in seed oils. Guarea guidonia seeds accumulated mainly oleic (44.9%) and linoleic (24.1%) acid, whereas the unusual gondoic and paullinic acids were identified in A. puberulus (15.8%; 8.9%) and P. elegans (14.4%; 44.2%), respectively. The oil of P. elegans had the highest oxidative stability (16.2 h.). Tocopherol predominated in A. puberulus (10.4 mg/100 g) and tocotrienol predominated in G. guidonea and P. elegans (2.6 mg/100 g). The vitamers α-tocopherol, γ-tocopherol, and γ-tocotrienol were found in the studied oils. β-carotene was predominantly detected in the oil of A. puberulus seeds (22.4 μg/g). Guarea guidonia seed oil has a high potential in food due to richness in essential fatty acids. In turn, A. puberulus and P. elegans oils could be suggested for other industrial purposes (e.g., biodiesel, varnishes, paints, soaps, or oleochemicals) due to their content of long-chain fatty acids.

Use of productivity-enhancing technologies (PET: growth hormones, ionophores, and beta-adrenergic agonists) to improve productivity has recently garnered public attention regarding environmentally sustainability, animal welfare, and human health. These consumer perceptions and increased demand for PET-free beef offer opportunities for the beef industry to target niche premium markets, domestically and internationally. However, there is a need to critically examine the trade-offs and benefits of beef raised with and without the use of PETs. This review contains a summary of the current literature regarding PET products available. The implications of their use on resource utilization, food safety and security, as well as animal health and welfare are discussed. Furthermore, we identified gaps in knowledge and future research questions related to the sustainability of these technologies in beef production systems. This work highlights the tradeoffs between environmental sustainability of beef and supplying the dietary needs of a growing population.

In this paper, a new architecture for designing tunable single- and dual-band radio-frequency fully digital transmitters is proposed and validated. The proposed architecture excels the state of the art in terms of simplicity and flexibility. While its short critical path leverages the use of equivalent polyphase decomposition techniques to increase the global system’s sampling frequency, the capability of changing the system’s frequency response in real time enables its use in both single- and dual-band transmission scenarios. To mitigate a crosstalk in the dual-band scenario, a precompensation technique is also proposed. This novel concept has been successfully validated in a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) based transmitter. To validate both the proposed transmitter as well as the precompensation mechanism, spectrum and error-vector magnitude (EVM) measurements were obtained for two scenarios with a carrier frequency of 2.5 GHz: 1) single-band, using quadrature phase-shifting keying (QPSK), 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and 64-QAM, with no intermediate frequency (IF), for different symbol rate (SR) values (from 3.125 up to 15.625 Msps) and 2) single- and dual-band, using QPSK and 16-QAM, with an SR of 3.125 Msps, for different IF values (from 2 up to 120 MHz). All the experimental results present EVM values below 2.6%, resulting in a well-defined constellation.

Surface electrical and electromagnetic geophysical methods can map enhanced electrical conductivity caused by acid mine drainage in mine tailings piles. In this case study, we investigate quantitative relationships between geophysical responses and the electrical conductivity, acidity and salinity of tailing samples at the Central Manitoba Mine tailings in Manitoba, Canada. Previous electromagnetic surveys at the site identified zones of enhanced conductivity that were hypothesized to be caused by acid mine drainage. In the present study, high-resolution EM31 and DC-resistivity measurements were made on a profile through a zone of enhanced conductivity and laboratory measurements of salinity and pH were made on saturation paste extracts from an array of tailing samples collected from the upper 2 m of tailings along the profile. Observed spatial correlation of pH and pore-fluid salinity in the tailings samples confirms that the enhanced conductivity in the Central Manitoba Mine tailings is due to acid mine drainage. Contoured cross-sections of the data indicate that the acid mine drainage is concentrated near the base of the oxidized zone in the thicker parts of the tailings pile. The zone of increased acidity extends to the surface on sloping margins causing an increase in apparent conductivity in shallow penetrating geophysical responses. The quantitative relationship between measured pH and salinity shows that the conductivity increase associated with the acid mine drainage is due only in part to conduction by ions produced from dissociation of sulfuric acid. Comparison of the observations with fluid conductivity estimates based on statistical relationships of pH and ion concentrations in water samples from across the tailings pile shows that Ca 2 + and Mg 2 + ions also make significant contributions to the conductivity at all values of pH and Cu 2 + , Al 3 + and Fe 3 + ions make additional contributions at low pH. Variability in the measured conductivity at constant values of pH is explained by variations in the contribution of the SO 4 2 − to the measurements. The results of the study demonstrate the feasibility of using electromagnetic geophysical surveys to map acid mine drainage, and related ionic concentration, in mine tailings.

A new architecture of an almost-digital RF transmitter is proposed. It consists of easy-to-have functional modules. Among the modules, a broadband Doherty amplifier is focused through a modified design approach. A proof-of-concept transmitter is built and measured. It demonstrates quite comparable performances: more than 40% of power-amplifier efficiency, adjacent channel leakage ratios between −26 and −37 dB, and average 2.6% of error vector magnitude over a frequency band from 0.7 to 1.1 GHz, which corresponds to a fractional bandwidth of 44%, when it is driven by a signal with 5.6 dB of peak-to-average power ratio.

Forage production in northern latitudes is challenging and uncertain in the future. In this case-study, the integrated farm system model (IFSM) was used to assess the impact of climate change and cropland expansion scenarios on forage production in a dairy farm in Newfoundland, Canada. Climatic projections indicated increases in temperature in the recent past (1990&ndash, 2016) and under any future climate (2020&ndash, 2079), thus enhancing agronomic performance. Temperature increases ranged from 2.8 &deg, C to 5.4 &deg, C in winter and from 3.2 &deg, C to 6.4 &deg, C in spring. Small precipitation increases (&lt, 10%) create narrower time windows to perform farm operations in the already stringent condition of excess moisture in the region. Results of land use scenarios including expansions of 20, 30, and 40% in cropland area, out of which 5% was dedicated to corn silage and the remainder to grass-legume mixtures, indicated increased yield and total production. Improvements in grass-legume yield ranged from 8% to 52%. The full range of production increases ranged from 11% to 105%. Increments in corn silage yield ranged from 28% to 69%. Total farm corn silage production increases ranged from 29% to 77%. An attainable cropland expansion of 20% would enable the farm to become self-sufficient in forage production under any climate scenario.
