Abstract

FLUKA is a general purpose Monte Carlo code able to describe the transport and interaction of any particle and nucleus type in complex geometries over an energy range extending from thermal neutrons to ultrarelativistic hadron collisions. It has many different applications in accelerator design, detector studies, dosimetry, radiation protection, medical physics, and space research. In 2019, CERN and INFN, as FLUKA copyright holders, together decided to end their formal collaboration framework, allowing them henceforth to pursue different pathways aimed at meeting the evolving requirements of the FLUKA user community, and at ensuring the long term sustainability of the code. To this end, CERN set up the FLUKA.CERN Collaboration1. This paper illustrates the physics processes that have been newly released or are currently implemented in the code distributed by the FLUKA.CERN Collaboration2 under new licensing conditions that are meant to further facilitate access to the code, as well as intercomparisons. The description of coherent effects experienced by high energy hadron beams in crystal devices, relevant to promising beam manipulation techniques, and the charged particle tracking in vacuum regions subject to an electric field, overcoming a former lack, have already been made available to the users. Other features, namely the different kinds of low energy deuteron interactions as well as the synchrotron radiation emission in the course of charged particle transport in vacuum regions subject to magnetic fields, are currently undergoing systematic testing and benchmarking prior to release. FLUKA is widely used to evaluate radiobiological effects, with the powerful support of the Flair graphical interface, whose new generation (Available at http://flair.cern) offers now additional capabilities, e.g., advanced 3D visualization with photorealistic rendering and support for industry-standard volume visualization of medical phantoms. FLUKA has also been playing an extensive role in the characterization of radiation environments in which electronics operate. In parallel, it has been used to evaluate the response of electronics to a variety of conditions not included in radiation testing guidelines and standards for space and accelerators, and not accessible through conventional ground level testing. Instructive results have been obtained from Single Event Effects (SEE) simulations and benchmarks, when possible, for various radiation types and energies. The code has reached a high level of maturity, from which the FLUKA.CERN Collaboration is planning a substantial evolution of its present architecture. Moving towards a modern programming language allows to overcome fundamental constraints that limited development options. Our long term goal, in addition to improving and extending its physics performances with even more rigorous scientific oversight, is to modernize its structure to integrate independent contributions more easily and to formalize quality assurance through state-of-the-art software deployment techniques. This includes a continuous integration pipeline to automatically validate the codebase as well as automatic processing and analysis of a tailored physics-case test suite. With regard to the aforementioned objectives, several paths are currently envisaged, like finding synergies with Geant4, both at the core structure and interface level, this way offering the user the possibility to run with the same input different Monte Carlo codes and crosscheck the results.

Abstract

ELI-Beamlines (ELI-BL), one of the three pillars of the Extreme Light Infrastructure endeavour, will be in a unique position to perform research in high-energy-density-physics (HEDP), plasma physics and ultra-high intensity (UHI) (1022W/cm2) laser–plasma interaction. Recently the need for HED laboratory physics was identified and the P3 (plasma physics platform) installation under construction in ELI-BL will be an answer. The ELI-BL 10 PW laser makes possible fundamental research topics from high-field physics to new extreme states of matter such as radiation-dominated ones, high-pressure quantum ones, warm dense matter (WDM) and ultra-relativistic plasmas. HEDP is of fundamental importance for research in the field of laboratory astrophysics and inertial confinement fusion (ICF). Reaching such extreme states of matter now and in the future will depend on the use of plasma optics for amplifying and focusing laser pulses. This article will present the relevant technological infrastructure being built in ELI-BL for HEDP and UHI, and gives a brief overview of some research under way in the field of UHI, laboratory astrophysics, ICF, WDM, and plasma optics.

Abstract

We employ the $\lambda ^{3}$ regime where a near-single-cycle laser pulse is tightly focused, thus providing the highest possible intensity for the minimal energy at a certain laser power. The quantum electrodynamics processes in the course of the interaction of an ultra-intense laser with a solid target are studied via three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, revealing the generation of copious $\gamma$ -photons and electron–positron pairs. A parametric study of the laser polarisation, target thickness and electron number density shows that a radially polarised laser provides the optimal regime for $\gamma$ -photon generation. By varying the laser power in the range of 1 to 300 PW we find the scaling of the laser to $\gamma$ -photon energy conversion efficiency. The laser-generated $\gamma$ -photon interaction with a high- $Z$ target is further studied using Monte Carlo simulations revealing further electron–positron pair generation and radioactive nuclide creation.

Abstract

With the development of high-intensity and high-repetition rate laser systems, it has become crucial to be able to detect and characterize in real time the high-energy byproducts (mainly electrons and photons) of laser-generated plasma. A novel multi-purpose scintillator-based electromagnetic calorimeter focused on high-energy particle and photon measurements and capable of working on a shot-by-shot basis at high-repetition rate is being developed at the ELI Beamlines center. Preliminary tests of this device under photon and electron irradiation from conventional and laser-driven sources are summarized and the results are here presented. A corresponding signal unfolding technique which was ad-hoc developed to reconstruct energies of one or two thermal populations in short time is described in detail.

Abstract

Relativistic electrons generated by the interaction of petawatt-class short laser pulses with solid targets can be used to generate bright x-rays via bremsstrahlung. The efficiency of laser energy transfer into these electrons depends on multiple parameters including the focused intensity and pre-plasma level. This paper reports experimental results from the interaction of a high intensity petawatt-class glass laser pulses with solid targets at a maximum intensity of 1019 W cm−2. In-situ measurements of specularly reflected light are used to provide an upper bound of laser absorption and to characterize focused laser intensity, the pre-plasma level and the generation mechanism of second harmonic light. The measured spectrum of electrons and bremsstrahlung radiation provide information about the efficiency of laser energy transfer.

Abstract

This article describes the design and presents recent results from testing and calibration of a forward Compton scattering high energy X-ray spectrometer. The calibration was performed using a bremsstrahlung source on the photon scattering facility at the γ Electron linac for beams with high brilliance and low emittance accelerator at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, which provides high energy X-ray photons with energies up to 18 MeV. The calibration was conducted at different bremsstrahlung end point energies—10.5, 13, 15, and 18 MeV. Experimental spectra show a systematic increase in the maximum energy, photon temperature, and flux. The spectrometer is effective for an energy range of 4–20 MeV with 20%−30% energy resolution. The spectrometer operates in low vacuum with pressure less than 0.1 mbar. Experimental tests showed that operating such a spectrometer in air causes a spuriously enhanced high energy signal due to Compton scattering of photons within air. The article also describes the design and shielding considerations which helped to achieve a dynamic range greater than 30 with this spectrometer. The comparison between the experimental results and Monte Carlo simulations are also presented.

Abstract

The absolute branching ratio of the K+ -> pi(+) pi(-) pi(+) (gamma) decay, inclusive of final-state radiation, has been measured using similar to 17 million tagged K+ mesons collected with the KLOE detector at DA Phi NE, the Frascati phi-factory. The result is: BR(K+ -> pi(+) pi(-) pi(+) (gamma)) = 0.05565 +/- 0.00031(stat) +/- 0.00025(syst) a factor similar or equal to 5 more precise with respect to the previous result. This work completes the program of precision measurements of the dominant kaon branching ratios at KLOE.

Recent results on the charged kaons, obtained at the KLOE experiment operating at DAΦNE, the Frascati ϕ -factory, are presented. These are the already published fully inclusive K μ 2 + ( γ ) and the preliminary results on the semileptonic decay K l 3 + and on the charged kaon lifetime τ ± .

Abstract

We have measured the ratio cr (e(+)e(-) -> pi(+)pi(-)gamma)/sigma(e(+)e(-) -> mu(+)mu(-)gamma), with the KLOE detector at DA Phi NE for a total integrated luminosity of similar to 240 pb(-1). From this ratio we obtain the cross section sigma (e(+)e(-) -> pi(+)pi(-)gamma). From the cross section we determine the pion form factor vertical bar F-pi vertical bar(2) and the two-pion contribution to the muon anomaly a(mu) for 0.592< M-pi pi < 0.975 GeV, Delta(pi pi) a(mu) = (385.1 +/- 1.1(stat) +/- 2.7(sys+theo)) x 10(-10). This result confirms the current discrepancy between the Standard Model calculation and the experimental measurement of the muon anomaly. (c) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

The ratio R-eta = Gamma(eta -> pi(+)pi(-)gamma)/Gamma(eta -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0)) has been measured by analysing 22 million phi -> eta gamma decays collected by the KLOE experiment at DANE, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 558 pb(-1). The eta -> pi(+)pi(-)gamma proceeds both via the rho resonant contribution, and possibly a non-resonant direct term, connected to the box anomaly. Our result, R-eta = 0.1856 +/- 0.0005(stat)+/- 0.0028(syst), points out a sizable contribution of the direct term to the total width. The di-pion invariant mass for the eta -> pi(+)pi(-)gamma decay could be described in a model-independent approach in terms of a(-) single free parameter, alpha. The determined value of the parameter alpha is alpha = (1.32 +/- 0.08(stat-0.09syst)(+0.10) +/- 0.02(theo)) GeV-2. 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

The accurate knowledge of relevant nuclear data is crucial for the design of advanced nuclear systems. These data include neutron cross sections of various plutonium isotopes and other minor actinides. The 242Pu(n,f) cross section was measured at the CERN n_TOF facility, taking advantage of the wide energy range (from thermal to GeV) and the high instantaneous flux of the neutron beam. Abstract

This paper presents the characteristics of the existing CERN n_TOF neutron beam facility (n_TOF-EAR1 with a flight path of 185 meters) and the future one (n_TOF EAR-2 with a flight path of 19 meters), which will operate in parallel from Summer 2014. Abstract

The Am241(n,γ) cross section has been measured at the n_TOF facility at CERN using deuterated benzene liquid scintillators, commonly known as C6D6 detectors, and time-of-flight spectrometry. The results in the resolved resonance range bring new constraints to evaluations below 150 eV, and the energy upper limit was extended from 150 to 320 eV with a total of 172 new resonances not present in current evaluations. The thermal capture cross section was found to be σth=678±68 b, which is in good agreement with evaluations and most previous measurements. The capture cross section in the unresolved resonance region was extracted in the remaining energy range up to 150 keV, and found to be larger than current evaluations and previous measurements.

Abstract

The (n, α) reaction in the radioactive 59Ni is of relevance in nuclear astrophysics as 59Ni can be considered as the first branching point in the astrophysical s-process. Its relevance in nuclear technology is especially related to material embrittlement in stainless steel. However, there is a discrepancy between available experimental data and the evaluated nuclear data files for this reaction. At the n_TOF facility at CERN, a dedicated system based on sCVD diamond diodes was set up to measure the 59Ni(n, α)56Fe cross section. The results of this measurement, with special emphasis on the dominant resonance at 203 eV, are presented here.

Abstract

The cross section of the Ni-62(n,gamma) reaction was measured with the time-of-flight technique at the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN. Capture kernels of 42 resonances were analyzed up to 200 keV neutron energy and Maxwellian averaged cross sections (MACS) from kT = 5-100 keV were calculated. With a total uncertainty of 4.5%, the stellar cross section is in excellent agreement with the the KADoNiS compilation at kT = 30 keV, while being systematically lower up to a factor of 1.6 at higher stellar temperatures. The cross section of the Ni-63(n,gamma) reaction was measured for the first time at n_TOF. We determined unresolved cross sections from 10 to 270 keV with a systematic uncertainty of 17%. These results provide fundamental constraints on s-process production of heavier species, especially the production of Cu in massive stars, which serve as the dominant source of Cu in the solar system.

Abstract

In laser-driven acceleration, ultra-short and intense laser pulses are focussed on targets to generate beams of ionising radiation. One of the most important issues to be addressed is personal monitoring. While traditional dosemeters were designed primarily for measurements in continuous fields, dosemeters for laser laboratories must be capable of working in pulsed fields of pulse length below 1 ps, in a single-shot regime up to the repetition rate of 1 kHz. Responses of conventional dosemeters (films, polyallyldiglycol carbonate, electronic personal dosemeter) to proton bunches of up to 30 MeV energy produced by South Korean PW laser system at the Advanced Photonics Research Institute, Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology were studied, both by means of Monte Carlo simulations and experimentally.

The existence of a light dark force mediator has been tested with the KLOE detector at DAPHNE. This particle, called U, is searched for using the decay chain phi-->etaU, eta-->pi+pi-pi0, U-->e+e-. No evidence is found in 1.5 fb-1 of data. The resulting exclusion plot covers the mass range 5, Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

Carbon nanotubes (CNT) are valuable for their application in nanotechnology, electrical properties and high surface area, and in our particular case, for the manufacture of nanosensors. In this work the technique of Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) was used for the manufacture of CNT. The process was conducted in a horizontal tube reactor using methane as precursor gas and an R.F. discharge of 1000w output power acting as ionizing medium. Having achieved the synthesis of CNT on copper (Cu) substrates, heated with an internal electrical resistance to a process temperature of 900°C, the substrates were coated with ferric nitrate Fe(NO 3 ) 3 , which served as a catalyst and nucleation center. The heating system used differs from traditional methods by its internal heating. Growth of CNT was achieved on vertical walls on Cu substrates and perpendicular to it; a prerequisite for the manufacture of nanosensors, which is the main objective of this work, as well as to reduce as much as possible the diameter of the CNT, being its main features 5 μm average length and 7 nm average diameter.

Abstract

We report the first observation of the rare η → e + e − e + e − ( γ ) decay based on 1.7 fb − 1 collected by the KLOE experiment at the DAΦNE ϕ-factory. The selection of the e + e − e + e − final state is fully inclusive of radiation. We have identified 362 ± 29 events resulting in a branching ratio of ( 2.4 ± 0.2 stat + bckg ± 0.1 syst ) × 10 − 5 .

Abstract

We present a measurement of the slope parameter α for the η → 3 π 0 decay, with the KLOE experiment at the DAΦNE ϕ -factory, based on a background free sample of ∼17 million η mesons produced in ϕ radiative decays. By fitting the event density in the Dalitz plot we determine α = − 0.0301 ± 0.0035 stat − 0.0035 + 0.0022 syst . The result is in agreement with recent measurements from hadro- and photo-production experiments.

Abstract

We have studied the ϕ → a 0 ( 980 ) γ process with the KLOE detector at the Frascati ϕ-factory DAΦNE by detecting the ϕ → η π 0 γ decays in the final states with η → γ γ and η → π + π − π 0 . We have measured the branching ratios for both final states: Br ( ϕ → η π 0 γ ) = ( 7.01 ± 0.10 ± 0.20 ) × 10 − 5 and ( 7.12 ± 0.13 ± 0.22 ) × 10 − 5 , respectively. We have also extracted the a 0 ( 980 ) mass and its couplings to η π 0 , K + K − , and to the ϕ meson from the fit of the η π 0 invariant mass distributions using different phenomenological models.

Abstract

We have searched for the decay ϕ → K 0 K ¯ 0 γ , by detecting K S pairs plus a photon and with the K S -mesons decaying to π + π − , in a sample of about 1.5 × 10 9 ϕ-decays collected by the KLOE experiment at DAΦNE. The reaction proceeds through the intermediate states f 0 ( 980 ) γ , a 0 ( 980 ) γ . We find five events with 3.2 events expected from background processes. We obtain the upper limit: BR ( ϕ → K 0 K ¯ 0 γ ) 1.9 × 10 − 8 at 90% CL.

Abstract

We present the result of a direct search for the decay K S → e + e − , obtained with a sample of e + e − → ϕ → K S K L events produced at DAΦNE, the Frascati ϕ-factory, for an integrated luminosity of 1.9 fb−1. The search has been performed using a pure K S beam tagged by the simultaneous detection of a K L interaction in the calorimeter. Background rejection has been optimized by using both kinematic and particle identification cuts. We find BR ( K S → e + e − ) 9 × 10 − 9 at 90% CL, which improves by an order of magnitude on the previous best limit.

Abstract

We have measured the cross section σ ( e + e − → π + π − γ ( γ ) ) at DAΦNE, the Frascati ϕ-factory, using events with initial state radiation photons emitted at small angle and inclusive of final state radiation. We present the analysis of a new data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 240 pb−1. We have achieved a reduced systematic uncertainty with respect to previously published KLOE results. From the cross section we obtain the pion form factor and the contribution to the muon magnetic anomaly from two-pion states in the mass range 0.592 M π π 0.975 GeV . For the latter we find Δ π π a μ = ( 387.2 ± 0.5 stat ± 2.4 exp ± 2.3 th ) × 10 −10 .

Abstract

We have studied the e + e − → ω π 0 cross section in the s interval 1000–1030 MeV using the π + π − π 0 π 0 and π 0 π 0 γ final states with a sample of ∼ 600 pb −1 collected with the KLOE detector at DAΦNE. By fitting the observed interference pattern around M ϕ for both final states, we extract the ratio of the decay widths Γ ( ω → π 0 γ ) / Γ ( ω → π + π − π 0 ) = 0.0897 ± 0.0016 and derive the branching fractions BR ( ω → π + π − π 0 ) = ( 90.24 ± 0.19 ) % , BR ( ω → π 0 γ ) = ( 8.09 ± 0.14 ) % . The parameters describing the e + e − → π + π − π 0 π 0 reaction around M ϕ are also used to extract the branching fraction for the OZI and G-parity violating ϕ → ω π 0 decay: BR ( ϕ → ω π 0 ) = ( 4.4 ± 0.6 ) × 10 −5 .

Abstract

Neutral kaons provide one of the systems most sensitive to quantum mechanics and CPT violation. Models predicting quantum mechanics violation, also related to CPT violation, have been tested at the CPLEAR and KLOE experiments. In this report results of CPLEAR obtained by studying the time evolution of single and two entangled kaons are reviewed. New or improved limits on decoherence and CPT violation parameters have been obtained by KLOE studying the quantum interference in the channel ϕ → K S K L → π + π − π + π − . No deviations from the expectations of quantum mechanics and CPT symmetry have been observed.

Abstract

The neutron flux of the n TOF facility at CERN was measured, after installation of the new spallation target, with four different systems based on three neutron-converting reactions, which represent accepted cross sections standards in different energy regions. A careful comparison and combination of the different measurements allowed us to reach an unprecedented accuracy on the energy dependence of the neutron flux in the very wide range (thermal to 1 GeV) that characterizes the n TOF neutron beam. This is a pre-requisite for the high accuracy of cross section measurements at n TOF. An unexpected anomaly in the neutron-induced fission cross section of 235U is observed in the energy region between 10 and 30 keV, hinting at a possible overestimation of this important cross section, well above currently assigned uncertainties. © Società Italiana di Fisica / Springer-Verlag 2013.

Abstract

At the n\_TOF experiment at CERN a dedicated single-crystal chemical vapor deposition (sCVD) Diamond Mosaic-Detector has been developed for (n,$\alpha$) cross-section measurements. The detector, characterized by an excellent time and energy resolution, consists of an array of 9 sCVD diamond diodes. The detector has been characterized and a cross-section measurement has been performed for the $^{59}$Ni(n,$\alpha$)$^{56}$Fe reaction in 2012. Abstract

We present the first observation of quantum interference in the process ϕ→KSKL→π+π−π+π−, using the KLOE detector at the Frascati e+e− collider DAΦNE. From about 5×104 neutral kaon pairs both decaying to π+π− pairs we obtain the distribution of Δt, the difference between the two kaon decay times, which allows testing the validity of quantum mechanics and CPT invariance: no violation of either is observed. New or improved limits on coherence loss and CPT violation are presented.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the branching ratio of the CP violating decay K L → π + π − performed by the KLOE experiment at the ϕ factory DAΦNE. We use 328 pb −1 of data collected in 2001 and 2002, corresponding to ∼150 million tagged K L mesons. We find BR ( K L → π + π − ) = ( 1.963 ± 0.012 stat . ± 0.017 syst . ) × 10 −3 . This branching ratio measurement is fully inclusive of final-state radiation. Using the above result, we determine the modulus of the amplitude ratio | η + − | to be ( 2.219 ± 0.013 ) × 10 −3 and | ϵ | to be ( 2.216 ± 0.013 ) × 10 −3 .

Abstract

We present a measurement of the K–π vector current form-factor parameters for the decay K L → π ± e ∓ ν . We use 328 pb−1 of data collected in 2001 and 2002, corresponding to ∼2 million K e 3 events. Measurements of semileptonic form factors provide information about the dynamics of the strong interaction and are necessary for evaluation of the phase-space integral I K e needed to measure the CKM matrix element | V u s | for K L → π ± e ∓ ν decays. Our result is λ + = ( 28.6 ± 0.5 ± 0.4 ) × 10 −3 for a linear fit, and λ + ′ = ( 25.5 ± 1.5 ± 1.0 ) × 10 −3 , λ + ″ = ( 1.4 ± 0.7 ± 0.4 ) × 10 −3 for a quadratic fit.

Abstract

Among some 400 million K S K L pairs produced in e + e − annihilations at DAΦNE, ∼6500 each of K S → π + e − ν ¯ and K S → π − e + ν decays have been observed with the KLOE detector. From these, the ratio Γ ( K S → π e ν ) / Γ ( K S → π + π − ) = ( 10.19 ± 0.13 ) × 10 −4 is obtained, improving the accuracy on BR ( K S → π e ν ) by a factor of four and providing the most precise test of the Δ S = Δ Q rule. From the partial width Γ ( K S → π e ν ) , a value for f + K 0 ( 0 ) × V u s is obtained that is in agreement with unitarity of the quark-mixing matrix. The lepton charge asymmetry A S = ( 1.5 ± 9.6 stat ± 2.9 syst ) × 10 −3 is compatible with the requirements of CPT invariance. The form-factor slope agrees with recent results from semileptonic K L and K + decays. These are the first measurements of the charge asymmetry and form-factor slope for semileptonic K S decays.

Abstract

We measured, with the KLOE detector, the spectrum of π + π − invariant mass in a sample of 6.7 × 10 5 e + e − → π + π − γ events with the photon at large polar angle ( θ γ > 45 ° ) at a centre of mass energy s around the ϕ mass. We observe in this spectrum a clear contribution from the intermediate process ϕ → f 0 ( 980 ) γ . A sizeable effect is also observed in the distribution of the pion forward–backward asymmetry. We use different theoretical models to fit the spectrum and we determine the f0 mass and coupling constants to the ϕ, to π + π − and to K K ¯ .

Abstract

From a sample of about 10 9 ϕ mesons produced at DAΦNE, we have selected K L mesons tagged by observing K S → π + π − decays. We present results on the major K L branching ratios, including those of the semileptonic decays needed for the determination of | V u s | . These branching ratio measurements are fully inclusive with respect to final-state radiation. The K L lifetime has also been measured.

Abstract

We have searched for the decay K S → 3 π 0 with the KLOE experiment at DA Φ NE using data from e + e − collisions at a center of mass energy W ∼ m ϕ c 2 for an integrated luminosity L = 450 pb −1 . The search has been performed with a pure K S beam obtained by tagging with K L interactions in the calorimeter and detecting six photons. We find an upper limit for the branching ratio of 1.2 × 10 −7 at 90% C.L.

Abstract

We have searched with the KLOE detector for the P and CP violating decay eta --> pi(+)pi(-) in a sample of 1.55 x 10(7) eta's from the decay phi --> etagamma of phi-mesons produced in e(+)e(-) annihilations at DAPhiNE. No signal is found. We obtain the upper limit BR(eta --> pi(+)pi(-)) < 1.3 x 10(-5) at 90% confidence level. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

We have measured the cross section σ ( e + e − → π + π − γ ) at an energy W = m ϕ = 1.02 GeV with the KLOE detector at the electron–positron collider DA Φ NE . From the dependence of the cross section on the invariant mass of the two-pion system, we extract σ ( e + e − → π + π − ) for the mass range 0.35 s 0.95 GeV 2 . From this result, we calculate the pion form factor and the hadronic contribution to the muon anomaly, a μ .
