1. Reproductive populations of the Critically Endangered bat Phyllonycteris aphylla at two new locations in Jamaica

Abstract: The Jamaican flower bat Phyllonycteris aphylla is categorized as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. It is endemic to Jamaica and formerly known only from Stony Hill Cave, where there are an estimated c. 500 individuals. Previously declared extinct twice, its rediscovery in 2010 at Stony Hill Cave marked new hope for the conservation of this important species. Although little is known about its ecology, the species is presumed to be a cave-obligate rooster and to rely exclusively on so-called hot caves, which are defined by high ambient temperatures and low air quality. In March–April 2023, we surveyed bats at seven caves throughout Jamaica. At two of these, Green Grotto Caves, St. Ann, and Rock Spring Caverns, St. Mary, we captured both male and pregnant female P. aphylla. At Green Grotto Caves, we captured 24 P. aphylla, and 66 at Rock Spring Caverns. We believe Rock Spring Caverns to be one of the largest known roosts of P. aphylla. Neither of these sites are hot caves as both are moderated by flowing water, although warmer chambers may be more important to this bat than to other species. Further monitoring of these populations and continued exploration of other potential roosts are vital for the protection of this species.

Abstract: Objectives This study aims (1) to assess the prevalence of severe fatigue among the general population of Geneva, 2 years into the COVID-19 pandemic and (2) to identify pandemic and non-pandemic factors associated with severe fatigue.Design Cross-sectional population-based survey conducted in Spring 2022.Setting General adult population of Geneva, Switzerland.Participants 6870 adult participants, randomly selected from the general population, included in the Specchio-COVID-19 cohort study, were invited to answer an online health survey.Outcome and cofactor measure Prevalence of severe fatigue was measured by the Chalder Fatigue Questionnaire with a cut-off score≥4 out of 11. We assessed prevalence ratios of severe fatigue considering sociodemographic factors, health and behavioural characteristics (body mass index, depression, recent diagnosis of chronic disease or allergy, acute health event, smoking status, physical activity and sleep quality) and recent self-reported COVID-19 infections.Results A total of 4040 individuals participated (participation rate 59%, 58% were women, mean age 53.2 (SD=14.1 years)). Overall prevalence of severe fatigue was 30.7% (95% CI=29.2%–32.1%). After adjusting for age, sex, educational level and pre-existing comorbidities, the following characteristics were associated with severe fatigue: individuals aged 18–24 years (adjusted prevalence ratio (aPR)=1.39 (1.10–1.76)) and 25–34 years (aPR=1.23 (1.05–1.45)), female sex (aPR=1.28 (1.16–1.41)), depression (aPR=2.78 (2.56–3.01)), occurrence of health events unrelated to COVID-19 (aPR=1.51 (1.38–1.65)) and self-reported COVID-19 infection in the past 12 months (aPR=1.41 (1.28–1.56)). After further adjustment for depression, previous associations were maintained except for young age.Conclusions About one-third of the adult general population of Geneva experienced severe fatigue, 2 years into the COVID-19 pandemic. Heightened fatigue among young adults is partly explained by depressive symptoms. Recent COVID-19 infection is substantially associated with severe fatigue, regardless of infection severity or co-occurrence of depressive disorder.Trial registration number CCER project ID 2020-00881.

Abstract: This article is dedicated to study the physical causes of a long-standing issue experienced in different tokamak devices throughout the last decades: the observed discrepancies between electron cyclotron emission (ECE) and Thomson Scattering (TS) diagnostic measurements at high temperature in the core tokamak plasmas. A recently developed heuristic model (Fontana et al 2023 Phys. Plasmas 30 122503), tested on an extensive data set from multiple pulses in the frame of recent JET campaigns, showed that such ECE-TS discrepancy could be reconciled by introducing a bipolar perturbation in the electron distribution function. Such a perturbation indeed modifies the EC emission and absorption spectra. Nonetheless, the heuristic model does not provide the physical mechanisms causing such a bipolar perturbation. In this work, detailed gyrokinetic analyses unveil the unexplored wave-particle interaction between electrons and the Kinetic Ballooning Modes (KBMs) in tokamak plasmas. The numerical studies of the core of a selected high-temperature pulse of the JET device revealed that the electron- β was large enough to destabilize KBMs. Such KBMs affect the electron distribution function in momentum space with a characteristic bipolar structure. The position of the bipolar structure in the velocity space is intimately linked to the electron diamagnetic frequency. The amplitude of the perturbation, assessed through nonlinear computations, is shown to be dependent on the amplitude of the KBM-induced turbulent fluxes. Thus, this study demonstrates that KBMs, destabilized by the high- β plasma conditions achieved in the core of high-temperature scenarios, perturb the electron distribution function forming bipolar structures in momentum space and, thereby, modifying the EC spectrum. Therefore, the reported mechanism may represent an intriguing explanation of the ECE-TS measurement discrepancy in the deep core of high-temperature plasmas.

Abstract: Within the 9th European Framework programme, since 2021 EUROfusion is operating five tokamaks under the auspices of a single Task Force called ‘Tokamak Exploitation’. The goal is to benefit from the complementary capabilities of each machine in a coordinated way and help in developing a scientific output scalable to future largre machines. The programme of this Task Force ensures that ASDEX Upgrade, MAST-U, TCV, WEST and JET (since 2022) work together to achieve the objectives of Missions 1 and 2 of the EUROfusion Roadmap: i) demonstrate plasma scenarios that increase the success margin of ITER and satisfy the requirements of DEMO and, ii) demonstrate an integrated approach that can handle the large power leaving ITER and DEMO plasmas. The Tokamak Exploitation task force has therefore organized experiments on these two missions with the goal to strengthen the physics and operational basis for the ITER baseline scenario and for exploiting the recent plasma exhaust enhancements in all four devices (PEX: Plasma EXhaust) for exploring the solution for handling heat and particle exhaust in ITER and develop the conceptual solutions for DEMO. The ITER Baseline scenario has been developed in a similar way in ASDEX Upgrade, TCV and JET. Key risks for ITER such as disruptions and run-aways have been also investigated in TCV, ASDEX Upgrade and JET. Experiments have explored successfully different divertor configurations (standard, super-X, snowflakes) in MAST-U and TCV and studied tungsten melting in WEST and ASDEX Upgrade. The input from the smaller devices to JET has also been proven successful to set-up novel control schemes on disruption avoidance and detachment.

5. Determination of the mean energy of fast electron losses and anisotropies through thick-target emission on WEST

Abstract: A new method to obtain the mean energy of fast electron losses in fusion plasmas using a versatile multi-energy hard x-ray (HXR) detector is presented. The method is based on measuring the thick-target emission of tungsten in the divertor region produced by fast electron losses interacting with the target and modeling the tungsten spectra by a Monte Carlo code which simulates the interaction between a beam of electrons and a solid target. The mean energy of the fast electron losses is determined through the comparison between the experimental and synthetic emission. The results show that fast electron losses during lower hybrid current drive discharges at WEST have a mean energy of 90–140 keV and represent only 2% of the total heat flux at the target. Additionally, anisotropic HXR emission has been detected for the first time at the WEST core and edge plasma, with opposite directions. It is due to the forward-peak emission of two distinctive populations of fast electrons: co-current fast electrons in the core and counter-current fast electron losses at the inner strike point. In view of future experiments like ITER where electron cyclotron current drive will generate a fast electron population, this technique could serve as a real-time monitor of fast electron losses and eventually feed an actuator on the current drive generation.

Abstract: In 2021 JET exploited its unique capabilities to operate with T and D–T fuel with an ITER-like Be/W wall (JET-ILW). This second major JET D–T campaign (DTE2), after DTE1 in 1997, represented the culmination of a series of JET enhancements—new fusion diagnostics, new T injection capabilities, refurbishment of the T plant, increased auxiliary heating, in-vessel calibration of 14 MeV neutron yield monitors—as well as significant advances in plasma theory and modelling in the fusion community. DTE2 was complemented by a sequence of isotope physics campaigns encompassing operation in pure tritium at high T-NBI power. Carefully conducted for safe operation with tritium, the new T and D–T experiments used 1 kg of T (vs 100 g in DTE1), yielding the most fusion reactor relevant D–T plasmas to date and expanding our understanding of isotopes and D–T mixture physics. Furthermore, since the JET T and DTE2 campaigns occurred almost 25 years after the last major D–T tokamak experiment, it was also a strategic goal of the European fusion programme to refresh operational experience of a nuclear tokamak to prepare staff for ITER operation. The key physics results of the JET T and DTE2 experiments, carried out within the EUROfusion JET1 work package, are reported in this paper. Progress in the technological exploitation of JET D–T operations, development and validation of nuclear codes, neutronic tools and techniques for ITER operations carried out by EUROfusion (started within the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme and continuing under the Horizon Europe FP) are reported in (Litaudon et al Nucl. Fusion accepted), while JET experience on T and D–T operations is presented in (King et al Nucl. Fusion submitted).

Abstract: The fusion reaction between deuterium and tritium, D ( T,n ) ^4 He is the main source of energy in future thermonuclear reactors. Alpha-particles ( ^4 He -ions) born with an average energy of 3.5 MeV transferring energy to the thermal plasma during their slowing down, should provide the self-sustained D–T plasma burn. The adequate confinement of α -particles is essential to provide efficient heating of the bulk plasma and steady burning of a reactor plasma. That is why the fusion-born α -particle studies have been a priority task in the second D–T experiments (DTE2) on the Joint European Torus (JET) to understand the main mechanisms of their slowing down, redistribution and losses and to develop optimal plasma scenarios. JET with Be -wall and W -divertor, enhanced auxiliary heating systems and improved energetic-particle diagnostic capabilities, producing significant population of α -particles, provided the possibility for comprehensive studying of the α -particle behaviour. Selected results of the confined and lost α -particle measurements, evidence of α -particle self-heating and assessments of the fusion performance are presented in this paper giving an opportunity for further modelling and extrapolation to the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor and burning plasma reactors.

Abstract: Burning reactor plasmas will be self-heated by fusion born alpha particles from deuterium-tritium reactions. Consequently, a thorough understanding of the confinement and transport of DT-born alpha particles is necessary to maintain the plasma self-heating. Measurements of fast ion losses provide a direct means to monitor alpha particle confinement. JET’s 2021–2022 second experimental DT-campaign offers burning plasma scenarios with advanced fast ion loss diagnostics for the first time in nearly 25 years. Coherent and non-coherent alpha losses were observed due to a variety of low frequency MHD activity. This manuscript will present the loss mechanisms, spatial and pitch dependencies, scalings with plasma parameters, correlations with wall impurities, and magnitude of DT-alpha born losses.

Abstract: The mission of WEST (tungsten-W Environment in Steady-state Tokamak) is to explore long pulse operation in a full tungsten (W) environment for preparing next-step fusion devices (ITER and DEMO) with a focus on testing the ITER actively cooled W divertor in tokamak conditions. Following the successful completion of phase 1 (2016-2021), phase 2 started in December 2022 with the lower divertor made entirely of actively cooled ITER-grade tungsten mono-blocks. A boronization prior the first plasma attempt allowed for a smooth startup with the new divertor. Despite the reduced operating window due to tungsten, rapid progress has been made in long pulse operation, resulting in discharges with a pulse length of 100 s and an injected energy of around 300 MJ per discharge. Plasma startup studies were carried out with equatorial boron nitride limiters to compare them with tungsten limiters, while Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating assisted startup was attempted. High fluence operation in attached regime, which was the main thrust of the first campaigns, already showed the progressive build up of deposits and appearance of dust, impacting the plasma operation as the plasma fluence increased. In total, the cumulated injected energy during the first campaigns reached 43 GJ and the cumulated plasma time exceeded 5 h. Demonstration of controlled X-Point Radiator regime is also reported, opening a promising route for investigating plasma exhaust and plasma-wall interaction issues in more detached regime. This paper summarises the lessons learned from the manufacturing and the first operation of the ITER-grade divertor, describing the progress achieved in optimising operation in a full W environment with a focus on long pulse operation and plasma wall interaction.

10. Facile sol–gel synthesis of silica sorbents for the removal of organic pollutants from aqueous media

Abstract: In this work, silica-based adsorbents were prepared by a facile and straightforward sol–gel route. The adsorption capacity of the prepared materials was investigated using methylene blue (MB) and metamizole (sodium dipyrone – DIP) as reference pollutants. We observed that the samples prepared here, regardless of the absence of catalyst, templating agent, or heat treatment step during their preparation, are promising materials for adsorption purposes. The adsorption kinetics was investigated based on the pseudo-first and pseudo-second-order kinetic laws of Lagergren. The most promising sample showed an adsorption capacity of 36.9 mg g−1 (removal capacity of 92.3%) for MB and 8.5 mg g−1 (20.5%) for DIP in aqueous media kept at a pH = 7.0. We observed that the adsorption of these species is strongly associated with the electrostatic interaction between the pollutant molecules and the silica surface. Such an interaction was increased when the pH of the solution increased from 3.0 to 4.5, 7.0, or 9.0. The incorporation of amino groups derived from (3-Aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) increased the affinity of silica for MB and DIP. These functional groups were incorporated into silica via post-grafting and co-condensation. Furthermore, it was shown that the silica matrices tested here can be easily regenerated by heat treatment in air at 450 °C for periods as short as 15 min, allowing its reuse in subsequent adsorption cycles.

11. Optimization of the operational domain for ICRH scenarios in WEST from statistical analysis

Abstract: In the WEST tokamak, the Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ICRH) system plays a substantial role in increasing the plasma temperature. However, its efficiency can be lowered by two main phenomena: ripple-induced fast ion losses and technical limits on the antenna current. In this work, a new technique using IR thermography was employed to measure the flux of particles coming from the trapping of fast ions in the toroidal magnetic field ripple. These measurements provided the opportunity to fit parametric scaling laws in order to predict the ion flux intensity and the total power loss for experiments with a plasma current of $I_\textrm{p} = 500$ kA and a major radius of the cyclotron resonance layer of $R_\textrm{1H} = 2.5$ m depending on the heating power and the line-averaged electron density. Furthermore, another semi-empirical parametric scaling was developed to evaluate the coupling resistance depending on controllable parameters such as the line averaged electron density and the radial outer gap between the separatrix and the ICRH antenna. These laws were used to define an operational domain from the database of previous experiments made during campaign C4. The settled operational domain suggests that high power ( $P_\textrm{ICRH} \gt 3$ MW) and high electron density ( $\overline{n_\textrm{e}} \gt 5.0\times10^{19}$ m ^−3 ) discharges are suitable for optimized steady-state high confinement scenarios in WEST using ICRH.

Abstract: A toroidal Alfvén eigenmode (TAE) has been observed to be driven by alpha particles in a JET deuterium-tritium internal transport barrier plasma. The observation occurred 50 ms after the removal of neutral beam heating (NBI). The mode is observed on magnetics, soft-xray, interferometry and reflectometry measurements. We present detailed stability calculations using a similar tool set validated during deuterium only discharges. These calculations strongly support the conclusion that the observed mode is a TAE, and that this mode was destabilized by alpha particles. Non-ideal effects from the bulk plasma are interpreted as responsible for suppressing the majority of TAEs which were also driven by alpha particles, but the modes that match the observations are predicted to be particularly weak for these non-ideal effects. This mode located far from the core on the outboard midplane is found to be driven by both trapped and passing particles despite alpha particles originating in the core.

Abstract: The reference ion cyclotron resonance frequency (ICRF) heating schemes for ITER deuterium–tritium (D-T) plasmas at the full magnetic field of 5.3 T are second harmonic heating of T and ^3 He minority heating. The wave-particle resonance location for these schemes coincide and are central at a wave frequency of 53 MHz at 5.3 T. Experiments have been carried out in the second major D-T campaign (DTE2) at JET, and in its prior D campaigns, to integrate these ICRF scenarios in JET high-performance plasmas and to compare their performance with the commonly used hydrogen (H) minority heating. In 50:50 D:T plasmas, up to 35% and 5% larger fusion power and diamagnetic energy content, respectively, were obtained with second harmonic heating of T as compared to H minority heating at comparable total input powers and gas injection rates. The core ion temperature was up to 30% and 20% higher with second harmonic T and ^3 He minority heating, respectively, with respect to H minority heating. These are favourable results for the use of these scenarios in ITER and future fusion reactors. According to modelling, adding ICRF heating to neutral beam injection using D and T beams resulted in a 10%–20% increase of on-axis bulk ion heating in the D-T plasmas due to its localisation in the plasma core. Central power deposition was confirmed with the break-in-slope and fast Fourier transform analysis of ion and electron temperature in response to ICRF modulation. The tail temperature of fast ICRF-accelerated tritons, their enhancement of the fusion yield and time behaviour as measured by an upgraded magnetic proton recoil spectrometer and neutral particle analyser were found in agreement with theoretical predictions. No losses of ICRF-accelerated ions were observed by fast ion detectors, which was as expected given the high plasma density of n _e ≈ 7–8 × 10 ^19 m ^−3 in the main heating phase that limited the formation of ICRF-accelerated fast ion tails. ^3 He was introduced in the machine by ^3 He gas injection, and the ^3 He concentration was measured by a high-resolution optical penning gauge in the sub-divertor region. The DTE2 experiments with ^3 He minority heating were carried with a low ^3 He concentration in the range of 2%–4% given the fact that the highest neutron rates with ^3 He minority heating in D plasmas were obtained at low ^3 He concentrations of ∼2%, which also coincided with the highest plasma diamagnetic energy content. In addition to ^3 He introduced by ^3 He gas injection, an intrinsic concentration of ^3 He of the order of 0.2%–0.4% was measured in D-T plasmas before ^3 He was introduced in the device, which is attributed to the radioactive decay of tritium to ^3 He. According to modelling, even such low intrinsic concentrations of ^3 He lead to significant changes in ICRF power partitioning during second harmonic heating of T due to absorption of up to 30% of the wave power by ^3 He.

Abstract: The recent deuterium–tritium campaign in JET-ILW (DTE2) has provided a unique opportunity to study the isotope dependence of the L-H power threshold in an ITER-like wall environment (Be wall and W divertor). Here we present results from dedicated L-H transition experiments at JET-ILW, documenting the power threshold in tritium and deuterium–tritium plasmas, comparing them with the matching deuterium and hydrogen datasets. From earlier experiments in JET-ILW it is known that as plasma isotopic composition changes from deuterium, through varying deuterium/hydrogen concentrations, to pure hydrogen, the value of the line averaged density at which the threshold is minimum, ${\bar n_{{\text{e}},{\text{min}}}}$ , increases, leading us to expect that ${\bar n_{{\text{e}},{\text{min}}}}$ (T) < ${\bar n_{{\text{e}},{\text{min}}}}$ (DT) < ${\bar n_{{\text{e}},{\text{min}}}}$ (D) < ${\bar n_{{\text{e}},{\text{min}}}}$ (H). The new power threshold data confirms these expectations in most cases, with the corresponding ordering of the minimum power thresholds. We present a comparison of this data to power threshold scalings, used for extrapolation to future devices such as ITER and DEMO.

Abstract: WEST database analysis shows a correlation of the recycled neutral source around the separatrix with core performances. This observation questions the causality chain between particle source and turbulent transport up to the core in L-mode, high recycling plasmas, an unavoidable phase of all scenarios. Coherently, at a given controlled central line integrated density $\bar n$ , lower ${n_{{\text{sep}}}}$ correlates with a larger density gradient around the separatrix as well as a larger global density peaking, $\bar n/\langle n\rangle $ , measured by interferometry. The latter correlates as well with lower collisionality in the core, similarly to JET and AUG H-modes (Angioni et al 2007 Nucl. Fusion 47 1326). The correlations reported allow phrasing the subsequent causality question: what is the interplay chain between low neutral recycling at the divertor plates, low density at the separatrix, high density peaking at the separatrix, high global density peaking, higher central temperature and better core energy confinement quality? Understanding the causality chain is essential to prepare ITER operation and design DEMO scenarios where the ratio of the divertor leg to the ionization length will be larger and where the pumped flux with respect to the plasma volume will be lower than presently operating tokamaks.

17. Effect of age and carcass weight on quality traits of m. rectus abdominis from Charolais heifers

Abstract: In practice cattle may be slaughtered at different combinations of age and weight. As each of these factors could affect meat quality traits, the present work aimed to identify which combination can be expected to increase overall meat quality of m. rectus abdominis of Charolais heifers. Totally, 40 heifers were slaughtered either at 26±1 or at 36±1 months of age. Young heifers were sampled at two different carcass weights (349±12 and 394±8 kg). Old heifers were also sampled at two different carcass weights (397±6 and 451±9 kg). The m. rectus abdominis was excised 24 h postmortem to determine metabolic enzyme activities, myosin heavy-chain isoform proportions, lipid contents, collagen content and collagen solubility. Shear force measurements were evaluated on raw and broiled meat after 14 days of ageing. Meat quality traits scored between 0 and 10 by sensory analysis. Increasing slaughter age from 26 to 36 months had no impact on either raw/broiled shear force (0.31⩽P⩽0.47) and/or meat quality traits (0.62⩽P⩽0.91) or on physicochemical properties of heifer’s meat samples. Increasing carcass weight for a similar slaughter age of 26 months had also impact neither on meat quality traits (0.52⩽P⩽0.91) nor on muscular properties. On the contrary, increasing carcass weight for a similar slaughter age of 36 months had induced a decrease of muscular shear force (raw muscle; P=0.009) and a concomitant decrease of total collagen content (P=0.03). Nevertheless, no significant impact on meat quality traits was revealed by the sensorial panel (0.13⩽P⩽0.49). Metabolic enzyme activities (0.13⩽P⩽0.86) and myosin heavy-chain proportions (0.13⩽P⩽0.96) were not significantly impacted by slaughter age and carcass weight. Thus, the impact of increasing carcass weight and/or slaughter age in young Charolais heifers has a limited impact on meat quality traits and associated muscular characteristics. Modulating heifer’s cycles (age and/or carcass weight in the studied range) appears to be a way to answer to the numerous marketing chains, without penalising meat quality traits.

Abstract: WEST database analysis shows a correlation of the recycled neutral source around the separatrix with core performances. This observation questions the causality chain between particle source and turbulent transport up to the core in L-mode, high recycling plasmas, an unavoidable phase of all scenarios. Abstract: An animal’s perceived sense of orientation depends upon the head direction (HD) system found in several limbic structures and depends upon an intact peripheral vestibular labyrinth. However, how the vestibular system influences the generation, maintenance, and updating of the HD signal remains poorly understood. Anatomical and lesion studies point towards three key brainstem nuclei as being potential critical components in generating the HD signal: nucleus prepositus hypoglossi (NPH), supragenual nucleus (SGN), and dorsal paragigantocellularis reticular nuclei (PGRNd). Collectively, these nuclei are situated between the vestibular nuclei and the dorsal tegmental and lateral mammillary nuclei, which are thought to serve as the origin of the HD signal. To test this hypothesis, extracellular recordings were made in these areas while rats either freely foraged in a cylindrical environment or were restrained and rotated passively. During foraging, a large subset of cells in all three nuclei exhibited activity that correlated with changes in the rat’s angular head velocity (AHV). Two fundamental types of AHV cells were observed: 1) symmetrical AHV cells increased or decreased their neural firing with increases in AHV regardless of the direction of rotation; 2) asymmetrical AHV cells responded differentially to clockwise (CW) and counter-clockwise (CCW) head rotations. When rats were passively rotated, some AHV cells remained sensitive to AHV whereas others had attenuated firing. In addition, a large number of AHV cells were modulated by linear head velocity. These results indicate the types of information conveyed in the ascending vestibular pathways that are responsible for generating the HD signal.Significance StatementExtracellular recording of brainstem nuclei (nucleus prepositus hypoglossi, supragenual nucleus, and dorsal paragigantocellularis reticular nucleus) that project to the head direction circuit identified different types of angular head velocity (AHV) cells while rats freely foraged in a cylindrical environment. The firing of many cells was also modulated by linear velocity. When rats were restrained and passively rotated some cells remained sensitive to AHV, whereas others had attenuated firing. These brainstem nuclei provide critical information about the rotational movement of the rat’s head in the azimuthal plane.

Abstract: The loss of previously adaptive traits is typically linked to relaxation in selection, yet the molecular steps leading to such repeated losses are rarely known. Molecular studies of loss have tended to focus on gene sequences alone, but overlooking other aspects of protein expression might underestimate phenotypic diversity. Insights based almost solely on opsin gene evolution, for instance, have made mammalian color vision a textbook example of phenotypic loss. We address this gap by investigating retention and loss of opsin genes, transcripts, and proteins across ecologically diverse noctilionoid bats. We find multiple, independent losses of short-wave-sensitive opsins. Mismatches between putatively functional DNA sequences, mRNA transcripts, and proteins implicate transcriptional and post-transcriptional processes in the ongoing loss of S-opsins in some noctilionoid bats. Our results provide a snapshot of evolution in progress during phenotypic trait loss, and suggest vertebrate visual phenotypes cannot always be predicted from genotypes alone.

24. Spatial calibration and synthetic diagnostic of a multi-energy hard x-ray camera at WEST tokamak

Abstract: WEST (tungsten environment in steady-state tokamak) is starting operation for the first time with a water-cooled full tungsten divertor, enabling long pulse operation. Heating is provided by radiofrequency systems, including lower hybrid current drive (LHCD). In this context, a compact multi-energy hard x-ray camera has been installed for energy and space-resolved measurements of the electron temperature, the fast electron tail density produced by LHCD and runaway electrons, and the beam–target emission of tungsten at the target due to fast electron losses interacting with the divertor plates. The diagnostic is a pinhole camera based on a 2D pixel array detector (Pilatus 3 CdTe CMOS Hybrid-Pixel detector produced by DECTRIS). The novelty of this diagnostic technique is the detector’s capability of adjusting the threshold energy at pixel level. This innovation provides great flexibility in the energy configuration, allowing simultaneous space and energy-resolved x-ray measurements. This contribution details two important steps in the preparation of the diagnostic operation. First, the in-vessel spatial calibration that was carried out with a radioactive source. Second, the synthetic diagnostic is obtained by the suite of codes ALOHA/C3PO/LUKE/R5-X2, which simulates LH wave propagation and absorption, as well as the fast electron bremsstrahlung production.

Abstract: Introduction While regional monitoring of antibiotic use has decreased since 2011 by 3.2%, in some healthcare facilities a significant increase (+43%) has occurred. The purpose of this study was to assess regional antibiotic prophylaxis (ABP) compliance with national guidelines. Material and methods In 2015, 26 healthcare facilities, both public and private, were requested to audit five items: utilization of antibiotic prophylaxis, the antimicrobial agent (the molecule) administered, time between injection and incision, initial dose, number of intraoperative and postoperative additional doses. Seven surgical procedures were selected for assessment: appendicectomy (APP), cataract (CAT), cesarean section (CES), colorectal cancer surgery (CCR), hysterectomy (HYS), total hip arthroplasty (THA) and transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). A statistical analysis of the 2303 records included was carried out. Results The general rate of antibiotic prophylaxis compliance was 64%. The antimicrobial agent used and initial dose were in compliance with the guidelines for 93% and 97.4% of cases respectively, and administration of antibiotic prophylaxis was achieved 60 minutes before incision in 77.6% of the records included. Regarding gastrointestinal surgery, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid was used in 32% of patients. In 26% of appendectomy files, administration occurred after incision, and one out of two files showed non-complaint perioperative and postoperative consumption. Conclusion Compliance with nationwide ABP guidelines is in need of pronounced improvement, especially with regard to time interval between injection and incision and the molecule prescribed. An action plan based on specific recommendations addressed to each establishment and an updated regionwide ABP protocol are aimed at achieving better and reduced consumption of antimicrobial agents.

Abstract: Changes in behaviour may initiate shifts to new adaptive zones, with physical adaptations for novel environments evolving later. While new mutations are commonly considered engines of adaptive change, sensory evolution enabling access to new resources might also arise from standing genetic diversity, and even gene loss. We examine the relative contribution of molecular adaptations, measured by positive and relaxed selection, acting on eye-expressed genes associated with shifts to new adaptive zones in ecologically diverse bats from the superfamily Noctilionoidea. Collectively, noctilionoids display remarkable ecological breadth, from highly divergent echolocation to flight strategies linked to specialized insectivory, the parallel evolution of diverse plant-based diets (e.g., nectar, pollen and fruit) from ancestral insectivory, and-unusually for echolocating bats-often have large, well-developed eyes. We report contrasting levels of positive selection in genes associated with the development, maintenance and scope of visual function, tracing back to the origins of noctilionoids and Phyllostomidae (the bat family with most dietary diversity), instead of during shifts to novel diets. Generalized plant visiting was not associated with exceptional molecular adaptation, and exploration of these novel niches took place in an ancestral phyllostomid genetic background. In contrast, evidence for positive selection in vision genes was found at subsequent shifts to either nectarivory or frugivory. Thus, neotropical noctilionoids that use visual cues for identifying food and roosts, as well as for orientation, were effectively preadapted, with subsequent molecular adaptations in nectar-feeding lineages and the subfamily Stenodermatinae of fig-eating bats fine-tuning pre-existing visual adaptations for specialized purposes.

Abstract: The analysis of the current ramp-down phase of JET plasmas has revealed the occurrence of additional magnetic oscillations in pulses characterized by large magnetic islands. The frequencies of these oscillations range from 5 to 20 kHz , being well below the toroidal gap in the Alfvén continuum and of the same order as the low-frequency gap opened by plasma compressibility. The additional oscillations only appear when the magnetic island width exceeds a critical threshold, suggesting that the oscillations could tap their energy from the tearing mode (TM) by a non-linear coupling mechanism. A possible role of fast ions in the excitation process can be excluded, being the pulse phase considered in the observations characterized by very low additional heating. The calculation of the coupled Alfvén–acoustic continuum in toroidal geometry suggests the possibility of beta-induced Alfvén eigenmodes (BAEs) rather than beta-induced Alfvén–acoustic eigenmodes. As a main novelty compared to previous work, the analysis of the electron temperature profiles from electron cyclotron emission has shown the simultaneous presence of magnetic islands on different rational surfaces in pulses with multiple magnetic oscillations in the low-frequency gap of the Alfvén continuum. This observation supports the hypothesis of different BAE with toroidal mode number n = 1 associated with different magnetic islands. As another novelty, the observation of magnetic oscillations with n = 2 in the BAE range is reported for the first time in this work. Some pulses, characterized by slowly rotating magnetic islands, exhibit additional oscillations with n = 0, likely associated with geodesic acoustic modes (GAMs), and a cross-spectral bicoherence analysis has confirmed a non-linear interaction between TM, BAE and GAM, with the novelty of the observation of multiple triplets (twin BAEs plus GAM), due to the simultaneous presence of several magnetic islands in the plasma.

Abstract: The software stack under development within a European coordinated effort on tools for burning plasma modelling is presented. The project is organised as a Task (TSVV Task 10) under the new E-TASC initiative (Litaudon et al 2022 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 64 034005). This is a continued effort within the EUROfusion inheriting from the earlier European coordination projects as well as research projects based at various European laboratories. The ongoing work of the TSVV Tasks is supported by the Advanced Computing Hubs. Major projects requiring the high performance computing (HPC) resources are global gyrokinetic codes and global hybrid particle-magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) codes. Also applications using the integrated modelling tools, such as the Energetic-Particle Workflow, based on the ITER Integrated Modelling & Analysis Suite (IMAS), or the code package for modelling radio-frequency heating and fast-ion generation may require intensive computation and a substantial memory footprint. The continual development of these codes both on the physics side and on the HPC side allows us to tackle frontier problems, such as the interaction of turbulence with MHD-type modes in the presence of fast particles. One of the important mandated outcomes of the E-TASC project is the IMAS-enabling of EUROfusion codes and release of the software stack to the EUROfusion community.

Abstract: Achieving a successful plasma current ramp-up in a full tungsten tokamak can be challenging due to the large core radiation (and resulting low core temperature) that can be faced with this heavy metallic impurity if its relative concentration is too high. Nitrogen injection during the plasma current ramp-up of WEST discharges greatly improves the core temperature and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability. Experimental measurements and integrated simulations with the RAPTOR code, complemented with the QuaLiKiz neural network for computing turbulent transport, allow a detailed understanding of the mechanisms at play. Increased edge radiation during this transient phase is shown to improve confinement properties, driving higher core temperature and better MHD stability. This also leads to increased operation margins with respect to tungsten contamination.

Abstract: Sheared flows are known to reduce turbulent transport by decreasing the correlation length and/or intensity of turbulent structures. The transport barrier that takes place at the edge during improved regimes such as H mode, corresponds to the establishment of a large shear of the radial electric field. In this context, the radial shape of the radial electric field or more exactly of the perpendicular E × B velocity appears as a key element in accessing improved confinement regimes. In this paper, we present the radial profile of the perpendicular velocity measured using Doppler back-scattering system at the edge of the plasma, dominated by the E × B velocity, during the first campaigns of the WEST tokamak. It is found that the radial velocity profile is clearly more sheared in lower single null configuration (with the B × ∇B magnetic drift pointing toward the active X-point) than in upper single null configuration for ohmic and low current plasmas (B = 3.7 T and q 95 = 4.7), consistently with the expectation comparing respectively ‘favourable’ versus ‘unfavourable’ configuration. Interestingly, this tendency is sensitive to the plasma current and to the amount of additional heating power leading to plasma conditions in which the E × B velocity exhibits a deeper well in USN configuration. For example, while the velocity profile exhibits a clear and deep well just inside the separatrix concomitant with the formation of a density pedestal during L–H transitions observed in LSN configuration, deeper E r wells are observed in USN configuration during similar transitions with less pronounced density pedestal.

Abstract: The interaction of Alfvén eigenmodes (AEs) and energetic particles is one of many important factors determining the success of future tokamaks. In JET, eight in-vessel antennas were installed to actively probe stable AEs with frequencies ranging 25–250 kHz and toroidal mode numbers |n| < 20. During the 2019–2020 deuterium campaign, almost 7500 resonances and their frequencies f 0, net damping rates γ < 0, and toroidal mode numbers were measured in almost 800 plasma discharges. From a statistical analysis of this database, continuum and radiative damping are inferred to increase with edge safety factor, edge magnetic shear, and when including non-ideal effects. Both stable AE observations and their associated damping rates are found to decrease with |n|. Active antenna excitation is also found to be ineffective in H-mode as opposed to L-mode; this is likely due to the increased edge density gradient’s effect on accessibility and ELM-related noise’s impact on mode identification. A novel measurement is reported of a marginally stable, edge-localized ellipticity-induced AE probed by the antennas during high-power auxiliary heating (ion cyclotron resonance heating and neutral beam injection) up to 25 MW. NOVA-K kinetic-MHD simulations show good agreement with experimental measurements of f 0, γ, and n, indicating the dominance of continuum and electron Landau damping in this case. Similar experimental and computational studies are planned for the recent hydrogen and ongoing tritium campaigns, in preparation for the upcoming DT campaign.

Abstract: We present an overview of results from a series of L–H transition experiments undertaken at JET since the installation of the ITER-like-wall (JET-ILW), with beryllium wall tiles and a tungsten divertor. Tritium, helium and deuterium plasmas have been investigated. Initial results in tritium show ohmic L–H transitions at low density and the power threshold for the L–H transition (P LH) is lower in tritium plasmas than in deuterium ones at low densities, while we still lack contrasted data to provide a scaling at high densities. In helium plasmas there is a notable shift of the density at which the power threshold is minimum ( n ¯ e , min ) to higher values relative to deuterium and hydrogen references. Above n ¯ e , min (He) the L–H power threshold at high densities is similar for D and He plasmas. Transport modelling in slab geometry shows that in helium neoclassical transport competes with interchange-driven transport, unlike in hydrogen isotopes. Measurements of the radial electric field in deuterium plasmas show that E r shear is not a good indicator of proximity to the L–H transition. Transport analysis of ion heat flux in deuterium plasmas show a non-linearity as density is decreased below n ¯ e , min . Lastly, a regression of the JET-ILW deuterium data is compared to the 2008 ITPA scaling law.

Abstract: Diversification and adaptive radiations are tied to evolvability, which in turn is linked to morphological integration. Tightly integrated structures typically evolve in unison, whereas loosely integrated structures evolve separately. Highly integrated structures are therefore thought to constrain evolutionary change by limiting morphological disparity. Mounting evidence suggests that high integration may facilitate evolutionary change along a single trajectory. We used geometric morphometrics to compare cranial disparity and integration among phyllostomid bats—which exhibit the greatest dietary diversity of any mammalian family— and their sister taxa within the superfamily Noctilionoidea. Our results reveal that phyllostomids are more tightly integrated and have less disparity in cranial shape than their outgroups, despite exhibiting tenfold higher species richness and significantly increased rates of speciation. Phyllostomid cranial morphology appears to have diverged from that of other noctilionoids by evolving along a single axis of morphological variation that describes the relative length of the rostrum. We propose that phyllostomids were able to evolve to occupy a wide range of dietary niches by varying rostrum length, possibly along a line of least evolutionary resistance. This study provides a compelling empirical example of how increased integration can lead to adaptation, implying that both high and low integration can underlie diverse phenotypes in adaptive radiation.

Abstract: Alfvénic instabilities (AEs) are well known to cause enhanced transport of energetic particles (EPs) in fusion devices. Most studies until now have focused on characterizing and understanding AE stability in single-species plasmas heated by neutral beams (NB), where deuterium is typically used as both main plasma species and NB fuel. As the fusion community moves toward fusion reactors that target burning plasma conditions, such as ITER, the single-species picture breaks down. Burning plasmas, which will use a mix of deuterium and tritium (DT) as main fuel, also feature the presence of several supra-thermal fusion products such as alpha particles, protons, helium isotopes and high-energy tritium ions. This work presents the extension of the EP transport kick model implemented in the TRANSP time-dependent tokamak transport code to study the combined effect of multiple EP species on AE stability and, in turn, the response of different EP species to plasma instabilities in terms of their redistribution and losses. Further validation of the enhanced model is planned based on experimental results expected from the JET DT campaign scheduled for 2021, in preparation for ITER plasmas and beyond.

Abstract: In the full tungsten environment of WEST, during its first phase of operation, around 25% of the pulses exhibited a rapid central electron temperature collapse. In its first phase, WEST plasmas were mostly heated by lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) and ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH). In this publication, the collapsing pulses are analysed to understand the key actuators at play. Experimentally, an initial slow reduction of central electron temperature due to a density increase is observed, while the central tungsten profile is flat and constant in time. Then, radiative collapse occurs: the core tungsten profile peaks rapidly, at the same time, the central hard x-ray channel measurement decreases indicating a change in core LHCD absorption. Integrated modelling is used to explore the causality chain. To capture the collapse speed, both, tungsten core peaking and reduction of central LHCD absorption are required. When central LHCD power absorption is reduced, core electron and ion temperature profiles flatten which reduces the tungsten neoclassical thermal screening and leads to the observed core tungsten accumulation.

Abstract: L'évaluation du « grain de viande » est une appréciation subjective, utilisée par certains chevillards et bouchers pour sélectionner et orienter les carcasses, un grain extrêmement fin étant synonyme de qualité. Pour évaluer la pertinence de cette notion quatre études ont permis i) d’objectiver la notion de grain de viande par une approche ethnologique, ii) de formaliser ce savoir-faire dans une grille de notation en vif et en carcasse, iii) d’évaluer les propriétés physicochimiques des quatre muscles utilisés par les experts pour juger une carcasse, et iv) d’évaluer l’existence d’un lien entre l’évaluation du grain de viande et la qualité sensorielle des viandes. Les seize indicateurs consignés dans la grille établie sur la carcasse sont répétables et facilement utilisables en abattoir. Sur le muscle longissimus thoracis, les grains fins ont été caractérisés par des teneurs en lipides intramusculaires significativement plus faibles que les grains grossiers, conduisant à des notes d’intensité de flaveur également significativement plus faibles, mais sans répercussions sur les notes de jutosité. Il n’est pas apparu de différence significative de tendreté entre les muscles à grains fins et grossiers. Au niveau physicochimique, le grain fin a été associé à des muscles nécessitant une moindre force de cisaillement sur la viande cuite et présentant une moindre teneur en collagène, sans différence sur sa solubilité, laissant supposer un effet favorable sur les propriétés sensorielles. Les écarts sont cependant très dépendants du muscle étudié et méritent d’être confirmés à plus grande échelle.

Abstract: Translating results from pre-clinical animal studies to successful human clinical trials in neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disease presents a significant challenge. While this issue is clearly multifaceted, the lack of reproducibility and poor translational validity of many paradigms used to assess cognition in animal models are central contributors to this challenge. Computer-automated cognitive test batteries have the potential to substantially improve translation between pre-clinical studies and clinical trials by increasing both reproducibility and translational validity. Given the structured nature of data output, computer-automated tests also lend themselves to increased data sharing and other open science good practices. Over the past two decades, computer automated, touchscreen-based cognitive testing methods have been developed for non-human primate and rodent models. These automated methods lend themselves to increased standardization, hence reproducibility, and have become increasingly important for the elucidation of the neurobiological basis of cognition in animal models. More recently, there have been increased efforts to use these methods to enhance translational validity by developing task batteries that are nearly identical across different species via forward (i.e., translating animal tasks to humans) and reverse (i.e., translating human tasks to animals) translation. An additional benefit of the touchscreen approach is that a cross-species cognitive test battery makes it possible to implement co-clinical trials—an approach developed initially in cancer research—for novel treatments for neurodegenerative disorders. Co-clinical trials bring together pre-clinical and early clinical studies, which facilitates testing of novel treatments in mouse models with underlying genetic or other changes, and can help to stratify patients on the basis of genetic, molecular, or cognitive criteria. This approach can help to determine which patients should be enrolled in specific clinical trials and can facilitate repositioning and/or repurposing of previously approved drugs. This has the potential to mitigate the resources required to study treatment responses in large numbers of human patients.

Abstract: The role of mechanical morphologies in the exploitation of novel niche space is well characterized, however, the role of sensory structures in unlocking new niches is less clear. Here we investigate the relationship between the evolution of sensory structures and diet during the radiation of noctilionoid bats. With a broad range of foraging ecologies and a well-supported phylogeny, noctilionoids constitute an ideal group for studying this relationship. We used diffusible iodine-based contrast enhanced computed tomography (diceCT) scans of 44 noctilionoid species to analyze relationships between the relative volumes of three sensory structures (olfactory bulbs, orbits, and cochleae) and diet. We found a positive relationship between frugivory and both olfactory and orbit size. However, we also found a negative relationship between nectarivory and cochlea size. Ancestral state estimates suggest that larger orbits and olfactory bulbs were present in the common ancestor of family Phyllostomidae, but not in other noctilionoid. This constellation of traits indicates a shift toward omnivory at the base of Phyllostomidae, predating their radiation into an exceptionally broad range of dietary niches. This is consistent with a scenario in which changes in sensory systems associated with foraging and feeding set the stage for subsequent morphological modification and diversification. Abstract: In this work, we use reduced and perturbative models to examine the stability of toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes (TAEs) during the internal transport barrier (ITB) afterglow in JET experiments designed for the observation of alpha driven TAEs. We demonstrate that in JET-like conditions, it is sufficient to use an incompressible cold plasma model for the TAE to reproduce the experimental adiabatic features such as frequency and position. When ion cyclotron resonant heating (ICRH) is used to destabilize TAEs, the core-localised modes that are predicted to be most strongly driven by minority ICRH fast ions correspond to the modes observed in the DD experiments, and conversely, modes that are predicted to not be driven are not observed. Linear damping rates due to a variety of mechanisms acting during the afterglow are calculated, with important contributions coming from the neutral beam and radiative damping. For DT equivalent extrapolations of discharges without ICRH heating, we find that for the majority of modes, alpha drive is not sufficient to overcome radiative damping.

Abstract: Even though, it has long been considered as a passive channel allowing communication between the systemic and pulmonary circulations, it is now clearly established that the right ventricle plays an essential role in cardio-pulmonary couple physiology. Its failure results in a clinical presentation that reflects the systemic congestion and reduced cardiac output. It is the consequence of two pathological situations frequently encountered in intensive care including pulmonary vascular resistance increase and right ventricle contraction alteration. Mechanical ventilation, certain drugs and volume overload can also participate. The management of the acute right heart failure is based on the combination of supportive treatment and causal treatment, specific to the etiology. Supportive therapy aims to optimize filling pressures, reduce afterload and support cardiac contractibility. With the growing number of therapeutic options used according to co-morbidities, decision-making by a multidisciplinary heart team seems essential.Même s’il a été longtemps considéré comme un conduit passif permettant la communication entre les circulations systémique et pulmonaire, il est maintenant clairement établi que le ventricule droit joue un rôle essentiel dans la physiologie du couple cardio-pulmonaire. La prise en charge de l’insuffisance cardiaque aiguë repose sur l’association d’un traitement supportif et d’un traitement causal, spécifique à l’étiologie. Abstract: © 2020 International Behavioural and Neural Genetics Society and John Wiley & Sons Ltd Many neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric diseases and other brain disorders are accompanied by impairments in high-level cognitive functions including memory, attention, motivation, and decision-making. Despite several decades of extensive research, neuroscience is little closer to discovering new treatments. Key impediments include the absence of validated and robust cognitive assessment tools for facilitating translation from animal models to humans. In this review, we describe a state-of-the-art platform poised to overcome these impediments and improve the success of translational research, the Mouse Translational Research Accelerator Platform (MouseTRAP), which is centered on the touchscreen cognitive testing system for rodents. It integrates touchscreen-based tests of high-level cognitive assessment with state-of-the art neurotechnology to record and manipulate molecular and circuit level activity in vivo in animal models during human-relevant cognitive performance. The platform also is integrated with two Open Science platforms designed to facilitate knowledge and data-sharing practices within the rodent touchscreen community, touchscreencognition.org and mousebytes.ca. Touchscreencognition.org includes the Wall, showcasing touchscreen news and publications, the Forum, for community discussion, and Training, which includes courses, videos, SOPs, and symposia. To get started, interested researchers simply create user accounts. We describe the origins of the touchscreen testing system, the novel lines of research it has facilitated, and its increasingly widespread use in translational research, which is attributable in part to knowledge-sharing efforts over the past decade. We then identify the unique features of MouseTRAP that stand to potentially revolutionize translational research, and describe new initiatives to partner with similar platforms such as McGill's M3 platform (m3platform.org).

Abstract: Resume La pandemie du COVID-19 a des consequences majeures sur l’organisation des soins. En France et dans le monde, les centres pratiquant l’electroconvulsivotherapie (ECT) ont vu leur activite diminuer, voire s’arreter, pour de diverses raisons. Dans ce contexte, le maintien ou la reprise de cette activite therapeutique essentielle pour de nombreux patients souffrant de troubles psychiatriques necessite des adaptations materielles, humaines et logistiques qu’il convient d’encadrer. L’objectif de ce travail collectif et national est de proposer des recommandations simples et applicables immediatement par tout etablissement de sante, public ou prive, pratiquant les ECT. Elles sont issues d’un retour d’experiences pluriprofessionnelles et interetablissements. Declinees en trois etapes, ces recommandations sont accompagnees d’une fiche pratique qui decrit, de facon precise, les conditions necessaires et prealables a toute reprise d’activite ECT.

48. Putting the leaf-nosed bats in context: a geometric morphometric analysis of three of the largest families of bats

Abstract: Bats in the family Phyllostomidae exhibit the most diverse dietary ecology of any mammalian family and the link between their morphology and diet is well-studied. However, the morphology of phyllostomids has yet to be placed into a broader context by comparing them to bats from other families through the use of geometric morphometrics. Using geometric morphometrics, we examined shape trends, disparity, and links between shape and diet using the crania and dentaries of 176 species from 3 of the largest bat families: Vespertilionidae, Molossidae, and Phyllostomidae. Results indicate that cranium shape in insectivorous phyllostomids does not overlap with non-phyllostomid families, suggesting at least 2 insectivorous cranial morphotypes have evolved within Chiroptera and phyllostomid cranial shape had already diverged from other bat families prior to developing their broad dietary range. Further, phyllostomids have higher cranium shape (1.5×) and dentary shape (1.89×) disparity than molossids and vespertilionids, whose dentary and cranium shape disparity is roughly equal. Although the cranium is constrained in many ways (e.g., housing the brain, vision, olfaction), we suggest the fact that dentary shape is limited to food processing allowed it to expand into larger regions of morphospace. Finally, a preliminary dietary analysis based on prey hardness indicates substantial shape overlap within families except for those species with extreme diets (e.g., liquid, very-hard food). Many bats are dietary generalists that eat a wide variety of food types of varying hardness. The data from the 3 large families of bats presented here suggest that eating foods of intermediate hardness may not require substantial cranial reorganization.

Abstract: The increased accessibility of soft-tissue data through diffusible iodine-based contrast-enhanced computed tomography (diceCT) enables comparative biologists to increase the taxonomic breadth of their studies with museum specimens. However, it is still unclear how soft-tissue measurements from preserved specimens reflect values from freshly collected specimens and whether diceCT preparation may affect these measurements. Here, we document and evaluate the accuracy of diceCT in museum specimens based on the soft-tissue reconstructions of brains and eyes of five bats. Based on proxies, both brains and eyes were roughly 60% of the estimated original sizes when first imaged. However, these structures did not further shrink significantly over a 4-week staining interval, and 1 week in 2.5% iodine-based solution yielded sufficient contrast for differentiating among soft-tissues. Compared to six “fresh” bat specimens imaged shortly after field collection (not fixed in ethanol), the museum specimens had significantly lower relative volumes of the eyes and brains. Variation in field preparation techniques and conditions, and long-term storage in ethanol may be the primary causes of shrinkage in museum specimens rather than diceCT staining methodology. Identifying reliable tissue-specific correction factors to adjust for the shrinkage now documented in museum specimens requires future work with larger samples.
