A solid-state reaction technique was used to synthesize polycrystalline Na2WO4. Preliminary X-ray studies revealed that the compound has a cubic structure at room temperature. The formation of the compound has been confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction studies and Raman spectroscopy. Electrical and dielectric properties of the compound have been studied using complex impedance spectroscopy in the frequency range 209 Hz–1 MHz and temperature range 586–679 K. The impedance data were modellized by an equivalent circuit consisting of series of a combination of grains and grains boundary. We use complex electrical modulus M* at various temperatures to analyse dielectric data. The modulus plots are characterized by the presence of two relaxation peaks thermally activated. The morphologies and the average particle size of the resultant sodium tungstate sample were demonstrated by atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The thicknesses and optical constants of the sample have been calculated using ellipsometric measurements in the range of 200–22 000 nm by means of new amorphous dispersion formula which is the objective of the present work. The results were obtained for Na2WO4 particles from experimental (EXP) and measured (FIT) data showed an excellent agreement. In addition, the energy gap of the Na2WO4 sample has been determined using ellipsometry and confirmed by spectrophotometry measurements.

We develop a model based on Fick's law of diffusion as a phenomenological description of the molecular motion, and on the coupled mode theory, to describe single-beam surface relief grating formation in azopolymer thin films. The model allows us to explain the mechanism of spontaneous patterning, and self-organization. It allows us to compute the surface relief profile and its evolution, with good agreement with experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, inorganic perovskite materials based on metallic halides have attracted significant attention due to their non-toxicity and ease of synthesis, making them suitable for various applications. This article describes the slow evaporation approach at room temperature for the fabrication of a non-toxic inorganic perovskite based on metallic halide Cs 2 ZnCl 4 . This compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic phase of the Pnma space group, as confirmed by room temperature X-ray diffraction. Through SEM-EDX studies, the morphological distribution and grain size of the Cs 2 ZnCl 4 crystal were determined. Optical investigations of our compound in the 200-800 nm wavelength range indicate that the direct band gap has a value of around 3.80 eV. The photoluminescence analysis reveals the highest emission peak at around 340 nm. By employing the Cauchy law in ellipsometry spectroscopy, the refractive index ( n ) and the extinction coefficient ( k ) were determined. Moreover, a fluorescence image of Cs 2 ZnCl 4 powder was captured using a confocal microscope. The electrical properties, including the dielectric constant, the loss factor, and the electrical modulus, have been determined in the temperature range of 313 to 433 K. Utilizing the Maxwell-Wagner effect as proposed by the Koop theory, the thermal variation of permittivity has been interpreted. The dewetting of an azopolymer droplet, followed by the photostructuration of the evaporated droplet, is employed to create an amplitude mask. This straightforward process yields a large area featuring periodic micro- and nanostructures. The resulting pattern is utilized to generate a nondiffracting beam. Starting with a Gaussian beam illuminating the amplitude mask, the critical aspect is the production of a bright, ring-shaped beam with a high radius-to-width ratio and symmetric central laser spots, each with the same intensity. This alternative approach to shaping a laser beam is demonstrated as a rapid and cost-effective fabrication technique.

In non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treatment, targeted therapies benefit only a subset of NSCLC, while radiotherapy responses are not durable and toxicity limits therapy. We find that a GABA(A) receptor activator, AM-101, impairs viability and clonogenicity of NSCLC primary and brain metastatic cells. Employing an ex vivo 'chip', AM-101 is as efficacious as the chemotherapeutic docetaxel, which is used with radiotherapy for advanced-stage NSCLC. In vivo , AM-101 potentiates radiation, including conferring a survival benefit to mice bearing NSCLC intracranial tumors. GABA(A) receptor activation stimulates a selective-autophagic response via multimerization of GABA(A) Receptor-Associated Protein (GABARAP), stabilization of mitochondrial receptor Nix, and utilization of ubiquitin-binding protein p62. A targeted-peptide disrupting Nix binding to GABARAP inhibits AM-101 cytotoxicity. This supports a model of GABA(A) receptor activation driving a GABARAP-Nix multimerization axis triggering autophagy. In patients receiving radiotherapy, GABA(A) receptor activation may improve tumor control while allowing radiation dose de-intensification to reduce toxicity., Highlights: Activating GABA(A) receptors intrinsic to lung primary and metastatic brain cancer cells triggers a cytotoxic response. GABA(A) receptor activation works as well as chemotherapeutic docetaxel in impairing lung cancer viability ex vivo . GABA(A) receptor activation increases survival of mice bearing lung metastatic brain tumors.A selective-autophagic response is stimulated by GABA(A) receptor activation that includes multimerization of GABARAP and Nix.Employing a new nanomolar affinity peptide that abrogates autophagosome formation inhibits cytotoxicity elicited by GABA(A) receptor activation.

CuIn 1-x Zn x Se 2 powders with various atomic percentages (x = 0, 0.05, 0.11, 0.16 and 0.21) were synthesized with the solvothermal method using metal chlorides and ethylendiamine as sources of precursors and a solvent, respectively. The experiment aims to investigate the effect of atomic percentages of Zn x compounds on the structural and optical properties of CuIn 1-x Zn x Se 2 in order to improve future technological applications based on this material. The powders' chalcopyrite phases were identified by X-ray diffraction. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis revealed the presence of Cu, In, Zn and Se with the expected atomic ratio of Zn/(In + Zn). Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy analysis showed that the powders have large-scale desert rose-like structures. The nanopowders' optical study by UV-visible spectrophotometry showed that the CuIn 1-x Zn x Se 2 energy gap values increase with the molar fraction of Zn x . A change from 1.15 to 1.4 eV was observed.

The optical characterization of transparent and stretchable patterned surfaces replicated from the fabrication of quasicrystal structures on azopolymer thin films is presented. The complexity of the quasicrystal surface fabrication is obtained by superimposed multiple light exposures. Azopolymer surface patterns are used as a replica molding master. The microscopic elongation of nanocavities induced by macroscopic stretchings of the elastomeric quasicrystal replication is characterized via optical diffraction. An original numerical method is presented to reconstruct the structured surface deduced from the optical diffraction measurements. The measurements show that drastic topologic changes, e.g., going from cavities to a canal, happens on the surface. This could be ingeniously used for creating actionable structured surfaces or nanoparticles trapping surfaces.

Strong light-matter interactions in resonant photonic nanostructures open up opportunities for enhancing nonlinear responses. In this work, by applying Fano resonances, we experimentally demonstrate efficient third-harmonic generation (THG) obtained with 2D silicon photonic crystal slabs (PCSs) thanks to the field enhancement in the dielectric layer. A 160-fold enhancement of THG is observed in the silicon PCS compared to the unpatterned silicon film. Through slightly changing the radius of the PCS, tunable THG on a single chip is obtained, paving a way for the optical manipulation of harmonic generation.

We demonstrate that enhanced linear absorption coefficient (LAC) of in-plane monolayer graphene is determined by the optical transmission spectra of a graphene layer coated symmetrically coupled add-drop silicon microring resonator (SC-ADSMR), of which the value is around 0.23 dB/µm. In contrast to the traditional cut-back method, the measured results aren't dependent on the coupling efficiency between the fiber tip and the waveguide. Moreover, precisely evaluation of graphene layer coated silicon microring resonator (SMR) is crucial for future optoelectronic devices with compact footprint and low power consumption.

Self-sustained all-optical poling second-harmonic generation (SHG) experiments are conducted in single-core and multicore dye-doped poly(methyl methacrylate) optical fibers. By tuning the polarization of the fundamental beam, the SHG signal is degraded and is reconstructed spontaneously up to its initial level. We found a new situation in which the photo-induced self-organization of azo polymers creates a well-ordered periodic structure.

We present experimental studies of all-optical poling (AOP) in large-core dye-doped poly(methyl methacrylate) plastic optical fibers. We show that the confinement of light within the fiber core permits us to reach the upper limit of second harmonic generation achievable by AOP using repeated trans-cis isomerization. Quantification of the output power indicates self-seeding that can counteract relaxation of the orientation during readout of the induced nonlinearity.

We present an optical experiment which permits us to evaluate the information exchange necessary to self-induce cooperatively a well-organized pattern in a randomly activated molecular assembly. A low-power coherent beam carrying polarization and wavelength information is used to organize a surface relief grating on a photochromic polymer thin film which is photoactivated by a powerful incoherent beam. We demonstrate experimentally that less than 1% of the molecules possessing information cooperatively transmit it to the entire photoactivated polymer film.

We present the results of a laser beam passing through a turbulent medium. First we measure the geometric parameters and the spatial coherence of the beam as a function of wind velocities. A multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis algorithm is applied to determine the multifractal scaling behavior of the intensity patterns. The measurements are fitted with models used in the analysis of river runoff records. We show the surprising result that the multifractality decreases when the spatial coherence of the laser is decreased. Universal scaling properties could be applied to the spatial characterization of a laser propagating in a turbulent medium or random medium.

Nonlocal communication between two laser light beams is experimented in a photochromic polymer thin films. Information exchange between the beams is mediated by the self-induction of a surface relief pattern. The exchanged information is related to the pitch and orientation of the grating. Both are determined by the incident beam. The process can be applied to experiment on a new kind of logic gates.

Although coherent light is usually required for the self-organization of regular spatial patterns from optical beams, we show that peculiar light-matter interaction can break this evidence. In the traditional method of recording laser-induced periodic surface structures, a light intensity distribution is produced at the surface of a polymer film by an interference between two coherent optical beams. We report on the self-organization followed by propagation of a surface relief pattern. It is induced in a polymer film by using a low-power and small-size coherent beam assisted by a high-power and large-size incoherent and unpolarized beam. We demonstrate that we can obtain large size and well-organized patterns starting from a dissipative interaction. Our experiments open new directions to improving optical processing systems.

Peculiar light-matter interactions can break the rule that a single beam polarization can address only two states in an optical memory device. Multistate storage of a single beam polarization is achieved using self-induced surface diffraction gratings in a photoactive polymer material. The grating orientation follows the incident light beam's polarization direction. The permanent self-induced surface relief grating can be read out in real time using the same laser beam.

We show that the electronic part of the nonlinear susceptibility chi(3) of thin films can be easily measured by third harmonic microscopy. The phenomenon of third harmonic generation (THG) is excited by a femtosecond laser beam focused at the interface between the thin film and a reference layer. The value of chi(3) is deduced from the THG intensity measurements with the help of a classical model. The validity of this simple and alternative method is established by testing reference liquid films.

We demonstrate the suitability of the third-harmonic-generation technique as a new nonlinear microprobe for nondestructive determination of the index profile of optical fibers. Photonic bandgap (Bragg-type) and air-silica microstructure (ASM) fibers were tested. The complete spatial characteristics, such as hole diameter and spacing into ASM fibers or sandwiched layer thickness into Bragg fibers, were demonstrated to be attainable anywhere along a bare fiber.

We describe the promising development of third-harmonic generation (THG) in laser scanning microscopy for study of the functional imaging of live biological cells. The dynamics of Ca(2+) in biological cells is shown. The Ca(2+) signal consists of a transient increase in the intracellular concentration. THG microscopy allows one to temporally visualize the release of Ca(2+) from internal stores and (or) calcium influx.
