Capital and property have been combined since Karl Marx wrote "Das Kapital" in 1867. Indeed, capitalism and the housing market are interlinked because property is an asset whose indexed value upholds global markets. On the other side of property as real estate is the environmental damage and augmentation of climate change that housing represents - mostly in advanced, technological societies. This paper attends to capital investment in housing as the Capitalocene and subsequently through environmental education according to environmental and social principles (social ecology). This article examines what is offered in the Australian curriculum for pre-tertiary and university students in terms of sustainable housing and uses the latest in sustainable housing research and practice to provide a new, visionary basis for environmental education, that tackles housing through 3D printing. The current Australian curriculum on sustainable housing centers on the "Illawarra Flame" house (University of Wollongong), that presents a retrofitting solution to improve the quality of life of the occupants. Illawarra Flame house is a net-zero, energy-efficient, solar powered house which provides the tenants with thermal comfort. This article expands and updates the data on sustainable housing from the 'Illawarra Flame' house to 3D printing and applies the principles of social ecology to make a link with environmental education that deals with the Capitalocene by offering affordable and sustainable housing.

The Deleuze/Guattari text "Anti-Oedipus" burst onto the intellectual scene in 1972 as a radical new means to reconceptualise capitalism and its effects. At the heart of "Anti-Oedipus" and its analysis of capitalism is the concept of deterritorialization, and how it evacuates identities, culture, values, and, indeed, coherent thought itself, and it makes them susceptible to the equations and dynamics of capital flows. "Anti-Oedipus" presents the mechanisms with respect to how deterritorialization interacts with and to an extent liberates desire as "desiring-machines." This philosophy of education paper applies the workings of deterritorialization and desire from "Anti-Oedipus" to the dynamics of contemporary climate change education and the Anthropocene. As such, it posits this dynamic as being critical to present day approaches to the philosophy of education that wish to engage with capitalism and its effects, and at the same time positively enter the climate change debate. This paper suggests that understanding the matrix of deterritorialization, desire, climate change and learning, is perhaps the most important work that can be performed in the philosophy of education today and with respect to the future.

Abstract The corrosion mechanisms and kinetics of a Mg-rich alkali aluminoborosilicate glass simulating UK high-level waste (CaZn28) were investigated upon dissolution in synthetic cement solutions. Dissolution varied as a function the different pH and alkali/alkaline earth content of each cement solution. High resolution microscopy and spectroscopy techniques ascertained the nature of the interface between the glass and the cement solutions. TEM-EDS revealed alkali- and alkaline earth-rich silica gels, into which K, Ca and Mg were incorporated. TEM-SAED, combined with synchrotron micro-focus XRD, identified the ubiquitous precipitation of the Mg-aluminate layered double hydroxide phase, meixnerite (Mg6Al2(OH)18·4H2O), in addition to goethite (FeOOH) and crystalline silica. The C-S-H phase, tobermorite (Ca5Si6O16(OH)2·4H2O), was identified in the most Ca-rich solution only. These data give insight to the role of alkali/alkaline earth-rich solutions in the dissolution or radioactive waste glasses, of importance to the final disposition in a geological disposal facility.

The thermodynamics of molecular recognition by proteins is a central determinant of complex biochemistry. For over a half-century, detailed cryogenic structures have provided deep insight into the energetic contributions to ligand binding by proteins. More recently, a dynamical proxy based on NMR-relaxation methods has revealed an unexpected richness in the contributions of conformational entropy to the thermodynamics of ligand binding. Here, we report the pressure dependence of fast internal motion within the ribonuclease barnase and its complex with the protein barstar. In what we believe is a first example, we find that protein dynamics are conserved along the pressure-binding thermodynamic cycle. The femtomolar affinity of the barnase-barstar complex exists despite a penalty by −TΔSconf of +11.7 kJ/mol at ambient pressure. At high pressure, however, the overall change in side-chain dynamics is zero, and binding occurs with no conformational entropy penalty, suggesting an important role of conformational dynamics in the adaptation of protein function to extreme environments. Distinctive clustering of the pressure sensitivity is observed in response to both pressure and binding, indicating the presence of conformational heterogeneity involving less efficiently packed alternative conformation(s). The structural segregation of dynamics observed in barnase is striking and shows how changes in both the magnitude and the sign of regional contributions of conformational entropy to the thermodynamics of protein function are possible.

Background: Each year, nearly 300,000 women and 5 million fetuses or neonates die during childbirth or shortly thereafter, a burden concentrated disproportionately in low- and middle-income countries. Identifying women and their fetuses at risk for intrapartum-related morbidity and death could facilitate early intervention. Methods: The Limiting Adverse Birth Outcomes in Resource-Limited Settings (LABOR) Study is a multi-country, prospective, observational cohort designed to exhaustively document the course and outcomes of labor, delivery, and the immediate postpartum period in settings where adverse outcomes are frequent. The study is conducted at four hospitals across three countries in Ghana, India, and Zambia. We will enroll approximately 12,000 women at presentation to the hospital for delivery and follow them and their fetuses/newborns throughout their labor and delivery course, postpartum hospitalization, and up to 42 days thereafter. The co-primary outcomes are composites of maternal (death, hemorrhage, hypertensive disorders, infection) and fetal/neonatal adverse events (death, encephalopathy, sepsis) that may be attributed to the intrapartum period. The study collects extensive physiologic data through the use of physiologic sensors and employs medical scribes to document examination findings, diagnoses, medications, and other interventions in real time. Discussion: The goal of this research is to produce a large, sharable dataset that can be used to build statistical algorithms to prospectively stratify parturients according to their risk of adverse outcomes. We anticipate this research will inform the development of new tools to reduce peripartum morbidity and mortality in low-resource settings.

Abstract A fraction of the UK Pu inventory may be immobilised in a zirconolite ceramic matrix prior to disposal. Two zirconolite compositions, targeting CaZr0.80Ce0.20Ti2O7 and CaZr0.80U0.20Ti2O7, were fabricated by hot isostatic pressing, alongside a reformulated composition, nominally Ca0.80Zr0.90Ce0.30Ti1.60Al0.40O7, with an excess of Ti and Zr added to preclude the formation of an accessory perovskite phase. Materials were subjected to accelerated leaching in a variety of acidic and alkaline media at 90 °C, over a cumulative period of 14 d. The greatest Ce release was measured from CaZr0.80Ce0.20Ti2.00O7 exposed to 1 M H2SO4, for which 14.7 ± 0.2% of the original Ce inventory was released from the wasteform into solution. The extent of Ce leaching into the solution was correlated with the quantity of perovskite present in the wasteform, and associated with the incorporation and preferential dissolution of Ce3+. CaZr0.80U0.20Ti2.00O7 exhibited improved leach resistance relative to CaZr0.80Ce0.20Ti2.00O7, attributed to the decreased proportion of accessory perovskite, with 7.1 ± 0.1% U released to in 8 M HNO3 after 7 d. The Ca0.80Zr0.90Ce0.30Ti1.60Al0.40O7 composition, with no accessory perovskite phase, presented significantly improved leaching characteristics, with < 0.4%Ce released in both 8 M HNO3 and 1 M H2SO4. These data demonstrate the need for careful compositional design for zirconolite wasteforms with regard to accessory phase formation and surrogate choice.

Mechanisms and consequences of the acclimation of soil respiration to warming are unclear. Here, the authors combine soil respiration, metagenomics, and functional gene results from a 7-year grassland warming experiment to a microbial-enzyme decomposition model, showing functional gene information to lower uncertainty and improve fit.

Abstract Background It is well-known that global warming has effects on high-latitude tundra underlain with permafrost. This leads to a severe concern that decomposition of soil organic carbon (SOC) previously stored in this region, which accounts for about 50% of the world’s SOC storage, will cause positive feedback that accelerates climate warming. We have previously shown that short-term warming (1.5 years) stimulates rapid, microbe-mediated decomposition of tundra soil carbon without affecting the composition of the soil microbial community (based on the depth of 42684 sequence reads of 16S rRNA gene amplicons per 3 g of soil sample). Results We show that longer-term (5 years) experimental winter warming at the same site altered microbial communities (p < 0.040). Thaw depth correlated the strongest with community assembly and interaction networks, implying that warming-accelerated tundra thaw fundamentally restructured the microbial communities. Both carbon decomposition and methanogenesis genes increased in relative abundance under warming, and their functional structures strongly correlated (R 2 > 0.725, p < 0.001) with ecosystem respiration or CH4 flux. Conclusions Our results demonstrate that microbial responses associated with carbon cycling could lead to positive feedbacks that accelerate SOC decomposition in tundra regions, which is alarming because SOC loss is unlikely to subside owing to changes in microbial community composition. I examine Derek Walcott’s portrayal of the journey of the breadfruit in “The Bounty,” which intertwines the history of the species’ transplantation with an elegy for the poet’s own mother. In its depiction of the mutiny on the Bounty, Walcott’s poem opens up a moment of Glissantian détour in the plants’ path from Tahiti to Jamaica when they are cast asea. I center the jettisoned plants rather than the crew or captain of the ship to explore how the interpretation of the event might change if we imagine the florae themselves to be the real mutineers. Invoking Christina Sharpe’s notion of “wake work,” I argue that the bobbing breadfruit specimens perform a wake for those who have perished in the waters of the Atlantic and the plantations of the West Indies as the plants wake up to the process of their commodification and absorption into the plantation system. For Walcott, the trajectory of the breadfruit also reflects the journey of his own mother after her death, so that its appearance in Saint Lucia implies not only that the plant has been successfully imported, but also that she has arrived at her ultimate destination in the afterlife. Feeding on the nutrients of her body, the breadfruit tree reincarnates the forms of its perished human and nonhuman predecessors, becoming a vegetal afterlife to the histories of colonial importation and plantation slavery.

Social essentialism, the belief that members of certain social categories share unobservable properties, licenses expectations that those categories are natural and a good basis for inference. A challenge for cognitive developmental theory is to give an account of how children come to develop essentialist beliefs about socially important categories. Previous evidence from Israel suggests that kindergarteners selectively engage in essentialist reasoning about culturally salient (ethnicity) categories, and that this is attenuated among children in integrated schools. In 5 studies (N = 718) we used forced-choice (Study 1) and unconstrained (Studies 2-4) category-based inference tasks, and a questionnaire (Study 5) to study the development of essentialist reasoning about religion categories in Northern Ireland (Studies 1-3 & 5) and the U.S. (Study 4). Results show that, as in Israel, Northern Irish children selectively engage in essentialist reasoning about culturally salient (religion) categories, and that such reasoning is attenuated among children in integrated schools. However, the development trajectory of essentialist thinking and the patterns of attenuation among children attending integrated schools in Northern Ireland differ from the Israeli case. Meta-analysis confirmed this claim and ruled out an alternative explanation of the results based on community diversity. Although the Northern Irish and Israeli case studies illustrate that children develop selective essentialist beliefs about socially important categories, and that these beliefs are impacted by educational context, the differences between them emphasize the importance of historical, cultural, and political context in understanding conceptual development, and suggest that there may be more than one developmental route to social essentialism.

We analyzed the microbial community that developed after 4 years of testing different soil-crop management systems in the savannah–forest transition zone of Eastern Ghana where management systems can rapidly alter stored soil carbon as well as soil fertility. The agricultural managements were: (i) the local practice of fallow regrowth of native elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) followed by biomass burning before planting maize in the spring, (ii) the same practice but without burning and the maize receiving mineral nitrogen fertilizer, (iii) a winter crop of a legume, pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan), followed by maize, (iv) vegetation free winter period (bare fallow) followed by maize, and (v) unmanaged elephant grass-shrub vegetation. The mean soil organic carbon (SOC) contents of the soils after 4 years were: 1.29, 1.67, 1.54, 0.80 and 1.34%, respectively, differences that should affect resources for the microbial community.From about 290,000 sequences obtained by pyrosequencing the SSU rRNA gene, canonical correspondence analysis showed that SOC was the most important factor that explained differences in microbial community structure among treatments. This analysis as well as phylogenetic ecological network construction indicated that members of the Acidobacteria GP4 and GP6 were more abundant in soils with relatively high SOC whereas Acidobacteria GP1, GP7, and Actinobacteria were more prevalent in soil with lower SOC. Burning of winter fallow vegetation led to an increase in Bacillales, especially those belonging to spore-forming genera. Of the managements, pigeon-pea cultivation during the winter period promoted a higher microbial diversity and also sequestered more SOC, presumably improving soil structure, fertility, and resiliency.

Limited evidence is available on outcomes associated with currently available medications from the endothelin receptor antagonist drug class (bosentan, ambrisentan, and macitentan) in elderly patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension. We evaluated mortality in predominantly elderly patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension in the US taking endothelin receptor antagonists. A retrospective administrative claims study was conducted using the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services national Medicare database. Patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension were identified using diagnostic codes. Cohort inclusion required age ≥18 years; ≥1 claim for macitentan, ambrisentan, or bosentan between 1 January 2014 and 31 December 2015 (index date and index endothelin receptor antagonist defined by first such claim); continuous enrollment for ≥12 months before and after the index date; and ≥80% of days covered for the index endothelin receptor antagonist. Follow-up was from index date until the earliest of Medicare disenrollment, death, or 31 December 2016. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate mortality hazard ratios with 95% confidence intervals for macitentan vs. ambrisentan or bosentan, adjusting for potential confounders. The study cohort included 1628 patients on index macitentan, 2852 on ambrisentan, and 1972 on bosentan. Overall, 69% of patients were aged ≥65 years and most were females (76%). Macitentan was associated with an 18% lower risk for mortality than ambrisentan (hazard ratio: 0.82, 95% confidence interval: 0.72–0.93; P = 0.0026) and a 39% lower risk than bosentan (hazard ratio: 0.61, 95% confidence interval: 0.53–0.71; P

Abstract Background Each year, an estimated 15 million babies are born preterm, a global burden borne disproportionately by families in lower-income countries. Maternal HIV infection increases a woman’s risk of delivering prematurely, and antiretroviral therapy (ART) may compound this risk. While prenatal progesterone prophylaxis prevents preterm birth among some high-risk women, it is unknown whether HIV-infected women could benefit from this therapy. We are studying the efficacy of progesterone supplementation to reduce the risk of preterm birth among pregnant women with HIV in Lusaka, Zambia. Methods The Improving Pregnancy Outcomes with Progesterone (IPOP) study is a Phase III double-masked, placebo-controlled, randomized trial of intramuscular 17-alpha hydroxprogesterone caproate (17P) to prevent preterm birth in HIV-infected women. A total of 800 women will be recruited prior to 24 weeks of gestation and randomly allocated to 17P or placebo administered by weekly intramuscular injection. Adherence to therapy for pulmonary arterial hypertension is essential to optimize patient outcomes, but data on real-world adherence to different pulmonary arterial hypertension drug classes are limited. This retrospective database analysis evaluated relationships between adherence, hospitalization, and healthcare costs in pulmonary arterial hypertension patients treated with endothelin receptor antagonists or phosphodiesterase type-5 inhibitors. From the IQVIA Adjudicated Health Plan Database, patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension were identified based on diagnostic codes and prescriptions for endothelin receptor antagonists (ambrisentan, bosentan, macitentan) or phosphodiesterase type-5 inhibitors (sildenafil, tadalafil) approved for pulmonary arterial hypertension. Patients were assigned to the class of their most recently initiated (index) pulmonary arterial hypertension therapy between 1 January 2009 and 30 June 2015. Medication adherence was measured by proportion of days covered; patients with proportion of days covered ≥80% were considered adherent. Abstract Background When conducting a survival analysis, researchers might consider two broad classes of models: nonparametric models and parametric models. While nonparametric models are more flexible because they make few assumptions regarding the shape of the data distribution, parametric models are more efficient. Here we sought to make concrete the difference in efficiency between these two model types using effective sample size. Methods We compared cumulative risk of AIDS or death estimated using four survival models – nonparametric, generalized gamma, Weibull, and exponential – and data from 1164 HIV patients who were alive and AIDS-free in 1995. We added pseudo-observations to the sample until the spread of the 95% confidence limits for the nonparametric model became less than that for the parametric models. Results We found the 3-parameter generalized gamma to be a good fit to the nonparametric risk curve, but the 1-parameter exponential both underestimated and overestimated the risk at different times. Using two year-risk as an example, we had to add 354, 593, and 3960 observations for the nonparametric model to be as efficient as the generalized gamma, Weibull, and exponential models, respectively. Conclusions These added observations represent the hidden observations underlying the efficiency gained through parametric model form assumptions. If the model is correctly specified, the efficiency gain may be justified, as appeared to be the case for the generalized gamma model. Otherwise, precision will be improved, but at the cost of specification bias, as was the case for the exponential model.

The magnitudes of replenishment and priming, two important but opposing fluxes in soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics, have not been compared. Here the authors show that the magnitude of replenishment is greater than that of priming, resulting in a net SOC accumulation after additional carbon input to soils.
