Bu tezin amacı, Dikmen 5. Etap gecekondu mahallesi ile Park Oran güvenlikli sitesi arasında mekansal ayrışma olup olmadığını anlamaktır. Bu iki yerleşim yeri arasında mekansal ayrışma varsa, bu, yerleşim yerleri sakinlerinin mekan kullanımı ve mekan algısı üzerinden incelenecektir. Ayrıca, bu tez iki grubun mekan kullanımında toplumsal cinsiyet, etnisite, sosyo-ekonomik statu açısından farklılıkların olup olmadığı araştıracaktır. Bu çalışmada Dikmen 5.etap gecekondu mahallesi ve Park Oran güvenlikli sitesi sakinlerinin mekansal algısı ve mekan kullanımı, Lefebvre'nin mekan teorisi, özellikle onun mekansal üçlüsü ve soyut mekan kavramsallaştırması çerçevesinde analiz edilecektir. Bu çalışmanın bulguları, söz konusu iki mahalle arasında – mahalle sakinlerinin mekan kullanımında ve algısında kendini gösteren- mekansal ayrışmanın olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. The aim of this thesis is to understand if there is spatial segregation between Dikmen 5th stage gecekondu neighborhood and Park Oran gated community. If so, it will be examined how spatial segregation is observed following the use/ experience and perception of space of the inhabitants. This thesis will also trace if there are differences according to gender, ethnicity and socio-economic status in the use/ experience of two groups. Dikmen 5th stage gecekondu neighborhood and Park Oran gated community residents' perception and use of space will be analyzed in the light of theory of space of Lefebvre, specifically around his spatial triad and his conceptualization of abstract space. The results of this thesis denote the existence of spatial segregation, which reveals itself in the experience and perception of space of the residents, between the two mentioned neighborhoods. 186

İnsan kaynaklı enerji ve madde akışı hacmi ekosistemin kritik sınırlarını zorlamaya devam etmektedir. Enerji verimliliği ve dekarbonizasyon çabalarının, nüfus ve ekonomideki büyümeyle artan çevresel etkileri dengelemekte tek başına yetersiz kaldığı görülmektedir. Enerji verimliliğini artırması beklenen yeni gelişmeler, kazanımlarının yanında gelen geri-tepme (sekme) etkisi nedeniyle azaltım hedeflerine ulaşmada yeterince etkili olamamaktadır. Bu nedenle insan aktivitelerini güvenli ekosistem sınırlarının içinde devam ettirebilmek için, toplam kümülatif enerji akış hacmi için bir sınırlamaya gidilmesi gereği ortaya çıkıyor. Bu doğrultuda yapılması gereken refahı artırırken enerji kullanımını ekolojik olarak güvenli seviyelerde tutabilmek. Bu, enerji verimliliği ve tasarrufu ile yapılabileceği gibi, mevcut kaynakların yeniden adil dağıtımı ile de yapılabilir. Çalışmanın asıl amacı, bize bu adil olmayan kullanım seviyeleri konusunda fikir verebilecek referans noktaları bulabilmek. Bu referans seviyesi enerjide `adil kullanım seviyesi` olarak isimlendirmeyi tercih edildi. Ülkelerarası kesitsel bir çalışmayla, enerji kullanımı ve ülke refahını temsil eden bazı hayat kalitesi indikatörleri arasındaki ilişki analiz edildi. Hayat kalitesi artışı ile ilişkilendirilemeyecek enerji kullanım seviyelerinin, ilişkiyi en iyi modelleyen eğri üzerinde sistematik olarak tespit edilebilmesi için maksimum eğrilik denklemi kullanımı önerildi. Literatürdeki diğer çalışmalardan farklı olarak toplam enerji kullanımı yerine hane enerji tüketimi değerleri kullanıldı. Ayrıca bu ilişkiyi daha sağlıklı analiz edebilmek için veriler iklim etkisinden soyutlandı ve enerji ihracatçısı ülkelerin ve geleneksel biyoyakıtlara bağımlı ülkelerin verileri dışarıda bırakıldı. Çalışma sonunda, belirli iklim, kaynak zenginliği ve mevcut teknoloji gibi koşullar altında yaklaşık olarak adil kullanım seviyesi olarak öne sürülebilecek bir enerji kullanım değer aralığı belirlendi. The physical scale of material and energy throughput of human activity continues to threaten the critical natural boundaries of the ecosystem. Energy efficiency and decarbonization efforts are not alone sufficient to counterbalance the impacts of fast-growing demand due to population and economic growth. Further, efficiency improvements often come with rebound effects that offset achievements. In order to carry the human activities within safe boundaries, a limit to total throughput could be targeted. We need to increase human well-being without increasing energy consumption to the ecologically dangerous levels. This could partly be possible by technological efficiency improvements and conservation. On the other hand, it could also be achieved by re-distributing the total available energy resources in the society. In our study, we attempt to develop an approach for measuring a benchmark which may be used to identify excessive uses of energy that do not lead to significant increases in well-being. We call this the `fair energy use level`, for the reason that it also refers to energy justice. We investigate decoupling between energy consumption and some quality of life indicators at the country level via cross-sectional analysis. Different from previous studies, we use residential energy consumption instead of primary energy consumption as it tends to mask the true responsibility of a country. In order for a fair comparison of countries' energy-wellbeing performances, we corrected energy consumption data for climatic differences and excluded energy-rich countries and biomass dependent countries to control for resource endowment and energy quality. Using the `knee` (maximum curvature) of the function we were able to compute the point after which well-being improvements are negligible. We find approximate levels of per capita energy consumption which could be considered as a boundary for `fair use` under certain conditions. 138

Tarımsal üretim çoğunlukla bir dış mekan faaliyeti olduğundan iklimsel değişkenliklerden oldukça etkilenmektedir. Tarımın iklimsel değişkenliklere ve aşırı iklim olaylarına karşı olan kırılganlığı farklı ölçeklerde tahmin edilmekte ve buna bağlı olarak çiftçilerin hassasiyetlerini azaltmak ve uyum kapasitelerini arttırmak için politikalar geliştirilmektedir. Farklı ölçeklerdeki değerlendirmeler farklı yöntemler ve göstergeler kullanmaktadır, ki bu birbiriyle karşılaştırılamayan çıktıların oluşmasına sebep olmaktadır. Makro ölçek analizler sonuçların yerel seviyede doğrulandığı ileri doğrulamaya sahip değilken, yerel seviye analizler hanehalkı düzeyinde kırılganlığın üst ölçeklere ne ölçüde genellenebileceğine açıklık getirmemektedir. Mevcut literatürde, farklı ölçeklerdeki kırılganlık analizlerini bir araya getiren ve bu ölçeklerdeki kırılganlığın dinamiklerini belirleyen bir yöntem bulunmamaktadır. Bu tez çalışması, tarım sektöründe iklim değişikliğine karşı kırılganlığın değerlendirilmesi için ilçe ve hanehalkı seviyesinde birbiriyle karşılaştırılabilir göstergeler kullanarak çok-ölçekli bir yaklaşım geliştirmiştir. Kırılganlığın hesaplanmasında kullanılan göstergeler ve bunların ağırlıklandırılması genellikle öznellik açısından eleştirilmektedir. Bu çalışmada, ilçe seviyesi veriler kullanılarak bir endeks oluşturulmuş ve seçilen göstergelerin çiftçilerin kırılganlık seviyelerindeki değişimi açıklamadaki başarılarının değerlendirilmesi için bir sosyo-ekonomik araştırma yürütülmüştür. Çiftçilerin kırılganlık seviyelerinin belirlenmesi için yeni bir kırılganlık hesaplama yöntemi sunulmuştur. Hanehalkı kırılganlık seviyesi iklimsel değişikliklerden kaynaklı ürün kayıpları ve bu kayıpların telafi edilmesindeki zorluğun bir fonksiyonu olarak tanımlanmıştır. Hanehalkı düzeyindeki veri yapısının daha iyi anlaşılması ve önemli göstergelerin açıklayıcı gücü yüksek bir modelle bulunması için hem doğrusal (Çoklu Doğrusal Regresyon), hem de doğrusal olmayan (Rastgele Orman) yöntemlerle analiz edilmiştir. Sonuçlar, gösterge yaklaşımının makro ölçekte faaliyetlerin önceliklendirilmesi için en kırılgan alanların seçilmesinde kullanılabileceğini göstermiştir. Hanehalkı seviyesinde kırılganlığı en çok etkileyen faktörler hanehalkının bağımlı nüfus oranı, tarım ile ilgili örgütlere üyelik sayısı, kaliteli toprağa sahip arazi yüzdesi ve kuru tarım arazisinin yüzdesidir. Sonuçlar ayrıca sahip olunan çiftlik hayvanı ve tarımsal ekipmanların sayısının artmasının çiftçilerin uyum davranışlarına önemli katkıları olduğunu göstermiştir. Bu çalışmanın sonuçları, politika yapıcılara daha etkili sonuçlar elde edilmesi için politika konuları ve uygulama alanlarının önceliklendirilmesinde yardımcı olacaktır. Agriculture is highly vulnerable to climatic changes and extremes as it is generally an outdoor activity. Its vulnerability to climate change is estimated at different scales and then policies are developed to reduce sensitivity and improve adaptive capacity of the farmers accordingly. Assessments at different scales use different methodologies and indicators, which result in incomparable outcomes. Macro scale assessments lack further validation of the results at the local level, and the local level assessments do not clarify to what extent the household level vulnerability is generalizable to upper scales. Existing literature lacks a methodology combining the vulnerability assessments at different scales and determining the drivers of vulnerability acting at these scales. This thesis develops a multi scale approach to evaluate climate change vulnerability in agriculture sector using comparable indicators at district and household levels. Selection and weighing of indicators used in the calculation of vulnerability are generally criticized in terms of subjectivity. In this study, an index is developed using district level data and a socio-economic survey is conducted to evaluate the success of the selected indicators in explaining the variation in vulnerability levels of the farmers. In order to determine the vulnerability levels of the farmers, a new vulnerability calculation method is introduced. Household level vulnerability is defined as a function of crop losses due to climatic changes and extremes and the difficulty level of compensation of the losses. Household level data is analyzed using both linear (Multiple Linear Regression) and non-linear regression (Random Forest) methods to understand the structure of the data better and find out the significant indicators with a model with higher explanatory power. The results show that the indicator approach can be used for determining highly vulnerable areas for prioritizing the actions at the macro scale. The factors significantly affecting the household level vulnerability are dependency ratio of the household, number of memberships to agricultural organizations, percentage of land with good soil quality and percentage of rain-fed land. The results also show that increasing number of livestock and agricultural equipment owned significantly contribute to adaptive behavior of the farmers. The results of this study can help policy makers to prioritize the policy subjects and implementation areas to get more influential results. 170

Bu tezin temel amacı ikinci ve üçüncü kuşak Türk–Alman göçmenlerinin Türkiye'ye geri dönüş göçü sürecinde edindiği deneyimleri ve karşılaştığı zorlukları analiz etmek ve bu zorlukları yok etmek için olası çözümleri ve sosyal politika önerilerini sunmaktır. Bu sebeple mevcut geri dönüş göçü konusundaki mevcut literatür ile Türkiye ve farklı ülkelerin göçmenlere yönelik sosyal politika pratikleri incelendi. Niteliksel araştırma yöntemlerinin kullanıldığı bu çalışmada geri dönen göçmenlerle derinlemesine ve yarı-yapılandırılmış görüşmeler yapılmıştır. Temel araştırma bulguları ulusötesi bağların, diaspora politikasını ve ikinci ve üçüncü kuşak göçmenlerin edindiği deneyimleri etkilediğini göstermiştir. Bunun yanında, katılımcıların yeniden entegrasyon sürecinde karşılaştıkları zorluklar incelenmiştir. Çalışmanın sonunda mevcut literatürden ve geri dönen göçmenlerin yaşadığı problemlerden yola çıkarak bazı sosyal politika önerileri sunulmuştur. The main goal of this study is analyzing experiences and challenges of second and third generation Turkish–Germans during the return migration process and offering possible solutions and social policy recommendations to eliminate these challenges. For this reason, current return migration literature and social policy practices of Turkey and different countries were examined. Qualitative methods of social research have been applied in this study using semi-structured in-depth interviews with returnees. The main findings show that transnational practices affect the diaspora policy and experiences of second and third generation migrants. Moreover, the challenges faced by interviewees in the reintegration process were examined. As a consequence of the study, some social policy recommendations were presented based upon current literature and problems experienced by returnees. 124

Bu tez sürdürülebilirlik habitusunun tüketim modelleri ve Türkiye´de, şehir ortamında yaşayan yeşil tüketicilerin yaşam tarzlarının ekolojik olarak dönüşümü üzerindeki etkisini incelemektedir. Bu çalışma, Bourdieu´nun alan, habitus ve sermaye kavramlarına ve Giddens´ın söylemsel bilinç kavramına değinerek pratik teorilerinin kavramsal çerçevesini kullanmıştır. Ayrıca, Warde´ın sürdürülebilir tüketim ve pratik teorileri arasında kurmuş olduğu ilişkiden yola çıkılarak gündelik hayat rutinleri ve alışkanlıkları sürdürülebilir tüketici davranışının bir parçası olarak analiz edilmiştir. Çevresel sermaye ve sürdürülebilirlik habitusu kavramları orta sınıf pozisyonuyla ilişkilendirilmiş ve bu çalışma içerisindeki yeşil tüketiciler orta sınıf sürdürülebilir tüketim pratikleri uygulayıcıları olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Sürdürülebilirlik habitusu gündelik hayat pratikleri, tüketim modelleri ve yaşam tarzları üzerinden tartışılmıştır. Böylece, sürdürülebilir tüketim pratiklerinin zayıf ve güçlü yönleri belirlenmiş ve yaşam tarzı dönüşümünün bireysel ve kolektif boyutları vurgulanmıştır. Bu kapsamda, İstanbul, Ankara ve Eskişehir´de yaşayan 17 katılımcı ile derinlemesine görüşmeler yapılmıştır. Ayrıca, sürdürülebilir tüketim alanında faaliyet gösteren taban örgütleri tarafından organize edilen atölyeler katılımcı gözlem tekniğinin kullanımı yoluyla çalışmaya dahil edilmiştir. This thesis examines the influence of habitus of sustainability on consumption patterns and ecologically sustainable transitions of lifestyles of green consumers living in an urban environment in Turkey. This study uses the conceptual framework of the theories of practice by referring to Bourdieu´s notions of field, habitus, and capital and to Giddens´ notion of discursive consciousness. In addition, daily routines and habits are analyzed as part of sustainable consumer behavior through the relationship established between sustainable consumption and theories of practice by Warde. The notions of environmental capital and habitus of sustainability are linked to the middle-class positions and green consumers in this study are considered as middle class sustainable consumption practitioners. Habitus of sustainability is discussed through daily life practices, consumption patterns, and lifestyles. Thus, weak and strong aspects of sustainable consumption practices are determined, and individual and collective dimensions of lifestyle transformation are emphasized. Within this scope, in-depth interviews were conducted with 17 participants living in Istanbul, Ankara, and Eskisehir. Besides, the workshops organized by grassroots initiatives in the area of sustainable consumption were included into the study through use of the participant observation method. 217

Bu tez, AKP hükümetleri ile yürürlüğe giren, TOKİ'nin ev sahipliği programı biçimindeki yeni özel mülkiyet rejimini eski gecekondu sakinlerinin ev sahibi olma süreçleri ile incelemektedir. AKP hükümetlerinin 'devlet öncülüğüdeki kentsel gelişme projeleri'ni tartışan eleştirel kent ve ekonomi-politik araştırmacıları çalışmalarında özel mülkiyete 'verili' anlamıyla yaklaşmışlardır. Bu çalışma, gecekondu sakinleri arasında ev sahipliği biçimindeki özel mülkiyet 'kavrayış'ının oluşumu ve yayılmasını ve bu 'kavrayış'ın eski gecekondu sakinlerinin tutumu üzerindeki etkisini sorgulayarak, özel mülkiyetin 'verili' anlamını açıklamayı hedeflemektedir. Bu amaçla, Gülveren – Ankara'da gerçekleşen Yatıkmusluk Gecekondu Dönüşüm Projesi'nde, eski gecekondu sakinlerinin TOKİ'nin borçlu evsahipliği programı ile ev sahibi olma sürecini inceleyen niteliksel bir araştırma yürütmüştür. Gramsci'nin 'hegemonya' perspektifinin Foucault'nun 'yönetimsellik' kavramı ile geliştirilmesine dayanan alternatif bir teorik pozisyon geliştirerek, bu çalışma, yeni özel mülkiyet rejimine AKP'nin neoliberal hegemonyayı sağlamlaştırmayı amaçlayan hegemonik bir projesi olarak yaklaşmıştır. Buna göre, özel mülkiyet 'kavrayış'ı, toplumu neoliberal birikim rejimine 'bağlamayı' ve 'bütünleştirmeyi' amaçlayan hegemonik projenin 'etiko-politik' zemini oluşturmaktadır. Sonuç olarak, bu tez, ev sahipliği biçimindeki özel mülkiyet 'kavrayış'ının, eski gecekondu sakinleri ve TOKİ arasındaki rıza ve zor ilişkisi ile kurulduğunu tartışmaktadır. Ayrıca, ev sahipliğinin hegemonik politikasının eski gecekondu sakinleri üzerindeki etkisi olarak 'neoliberal öznellikler', bu 'kavrayış'ı yeniden üreten bir güç olarak AKP'nin hegemonik projesinin 'etiko-politik' zeminini sağlamlaştırmaktadır. This thesis examines the new private property regime under AKP rule in the form of the TOKİ homeownership program for gecekondu residents, which initiates home-owning processes for gecekondu residents. Studies by critical urban and political-economy scholars have approached private property as taken-for-granted. By questioning the formation and dissemination of the 'conception' of private property in the form of homeownership among former gecekondu residents and its implications for their conduct , this study attempts to give an explanatory account for the assumptions of private property. For this aim, qualitative research was conducted in Yatıkmusluk Gecekondu Transformation Project, located in Gülveren – Ankara, and examined the process of homeownership for former gecekondu residents through TOKİ's indebted homeownership program. By developing an alternative theoretical position, which is based on the hegemony perspective of Gramsci and its elaboration with Foucauldian governmentality concept, the new private property regime is approached as a hegemonic project of the AKP aiming to re-consolidate neoliberal hegemony. Accordingly, the 'conception' of private property constitutes an 'ethico-political' ground of the AKP's hegemonic project, which aims to 'cement' and 'unify' society into the neoliberal accumulation regime. Therefore, this thesis argues that the 'conception' of private property as homeownership is formed through relationships of 'consent' and 'coercion' between the former gecekondu residents and TOKİ. Moreover, neoliberal subjectivities, as the implication of the hegemonic politics of homeownership on the conduct of former gecekondu residents becomes a re-productive force for such a conception, and hence the re-consolidation of the 'ethico-political' ground of the hegemonic project of AKP. 212

Bu tez dar gelirli işçilerin işgücü piyasasında sosyal sermayelerini nasıl harekete geçirdiklerini araştırmaktadır. Erişilen sosyal sermayeyi, mobilize olmuş sosyal sermayeden ayırarak, dar gelirli işçilerin, bağlantılarına iş bulma konusunda karar verirken kullandıkları değerlendirme kriterlerini analiz etmektedir. Bazı kişilere işgücü piyasasında neden yardım edilmediğini anlamak için sembolik sınırlar ve çerçeveler kavramlarını kullanır. Sembolik sınırların - aktörlerin insanları kategorize etme konusundaki kavramsal ayrımlar - sosyal sermayenin harekete geçirilmesinde yansımaları olduğunu savunmaktadır. Görüşmeciler, düzgün vs çakal çukal sınırında bir ayrım yapmaktadırlar. Bağlantılarına iş bulma konusunda yardım ederkenki karar verme söylemleri, düzgün ve çakal çukal insanlar arasında yarattıkları sembolik sınırlarla örtüşmektedir. Sosyal sermayelerini harekete geçirmek için iş arayanın düzgün olmasını şart koşarlar. This thesis explores how low-income workers mobilize their social capital in the labor market. Distinguishing accessed social capital from mobilized social capital, it analyzes the criteria of evaluation which low-income workers in their decision to give hand to their connections in job-finding assistance. It employs the concepts of symbolic boundaries and frames to understand why some individuals are deemed unworthy of helping in the labor market. It argues that symbolic boundaries, conceptual distinctions made by actors to categorize people, have reflections on the mobilization of social capital. Thus, this study aims to accomplish three tasks: to analyze the mechanism which produces symbolic distinctions by exploring the frames of work, success and worth, to discover the content of symbolic boundaries and to illustrate their effects on the social capital mobilization. The informants make a distinction within decent and vagabond (düzgün vs çakal çukal) type of people. In the labor market, where active social network to provide inside track of jobs is imperative, their decision-making articulations overlap with the symbolic boundaries they create between decent and vagabond people. They require the job-seeker to be decent (düzgün) in order to mobilize their social capital. 161

Bu tez çalışması, İstanbul'da ev hizmetlerinde çalışan Ermenistanlı göçmenlerin anlatılarını analiz ederek, söz konusu grubun etnik, dini ve milli kimliklerine dair algılarını, Ermeni ve Türk işverenlerle olan ilişkilerini ve İstanbul'daki deneyimlerini inceler. Niteliksel araştırma yöntemlerinin kullanıldığı bu çalışmada katılımcı gözlemi, derinlemesine ve yarı-yapılandırılmış görüşmeler ile odak grup çalışması gibi metotlar uygulanmıştır. Mitlerin, sembollerin, ortak geçmişin ve seçilmiş olma fikrinin `Ermeni kimliğini` nasıl etkilediğini anlamak üzere kimliğin ilksel, etno-sembolik ve yapılanmış yönleri ele alınmıştır. Araştırma bulguları, İstanbul'da aktif bir Ermeni cemaat yaşamı olmasının Ermenistanlı göçmenlerin kimliklerini etkilediğini ve yeniden şekillendirdiğini göstermiştir. Dolayısıyla; söz konusu iki grubun sosyo-kültürel farklılıklarına rağmen, İstanbul'da bir Ermeni komünitesinin bulunması, Ermenice dilinin kullanılması, Ermeni Apostolik Kilisesinin varlığı ve etnik bağlar temelinde bir tür soydaşlık ilişkisinin gelişmesi Ermenistanlı göçmenlerin deneyimlerini önemli ölçüde etkilemektedir. This thesis presents the perceptions and dynamics of ethnic, national and religious identity of Armenian immigrant domestic workers in Istanbul by analyzing their narratives about their journey to Turkey, experiences in Istanbul and employer-employee relationships with their Armenian and non-Armenian employers. Qualitative methods of social research have been applied in this study by means of utilizing participant observation, focus group discussions, semi-structured and informal interviews with Armenian immigrants. The primordial, ethno-symbolic and constructed aspects of identity has been addressed to understand the role of myths, symbols, ethnic election and common ancestry in the definition of `Armenian identity`. Findings show that a reformulation of identity has taken place on immigrants' part with the influence of an active Armenian community life in Istanbul. Therefore, the existence of an Armenian community in Istanbul, the role of Armenian language, engagement in the Armenian Apostolic church and sense of kinship based on ethnic ties greatly contribute to the experiences of Armenian immigrant domestic workers in Istanbul despite the differences in socio-cultural background of the two groups. 127

Bu çalışmanın amacı, Türkiye'de kadınların çevre hareketlerinde kendilerine nasıl yer açtıkları, çevre sorunlarına karşı nasıl bir söylem geliştirdikleri ve nasıl bir motivasyon ile çevre hareketlerine yön verdiklerini anlamak ve açıklamaktır. Bu tezin öncelikli araştırma problemi, Türkiye'de çevre hareketinde kadınlara yeri ve kadınların çevre hareketinde oluşturdukları çerçevedir. Türkiye'de kadın aktivistlerin çevre hareketlerinde kolektif kimlikleri nasıl oluşturduklarını, hangi repertuar ve söylemleri kullanarak çevreyi korumaya çalıştıklarını ve isteklerini hangi yöntemlerle ifade ettiklerini sorgulamıştır. Buna ek olarak Türkiye'de hükümetin tepeden inmeci neo-liberal ekonomik politikaları ve enerji yatırımlarına karşı kadınların çevre ile ilgili ortaya çıkan problemlerde karşı bir direniş sergilerken sahip oldukları motivasyonları analiz edilmiştir. Kadınların çevre hareketlerine katılımındaki motivasyonları kırsal ve şehir alanlarda farklılık göstermektedir. Çevresel yıkıma karşı şehirde kadın yaşam biçimlerini korumaya çalışırken, kırsalda yaşam alanları için mücadele etmektedirler. Bu çalışma, doğayı savunma mücadelesinde çevre koruma ve sürdürülebilirlik konusunda kadınların aktif katılımının ve öncülüğünün hükümetin agresif politika ve tutumuna karşı nasıl bir duruş sergilediğini anlamaya çalışır. Bu tezde doğa ve kadın ilişkisi ve kadının çevre ile ilgili konulara katılımı ekofeminist bakış açısı ile analiz edilmiştir. Çevre hareketlerini toplumsal cinsiyet açısından analiz etmek kadının çevre hareketlerindeki etkisini anlamak için önemlidir. Dünyada diğer bir çok toplumda olduğu gibi Türkiye'de de kadınların doğa ile yakın ilişkileri vardır. Bunun yanında kadınlar yeşil tüketim ve sürdürülebilirlik için önemli bir rol oynamaktadırlar. Türkiye'de bir çok çevre hareketleri feminist motivasyonlarla ortaya çıkmasa da kadınlar çevre problemleri ile ilgili endişelerini dile getirirken doğa ve kadın ilişkisini vurgular. Türkiye'de ekofeminist hareketin var olduğunu iddia etmek şu an için zor olsa da kadınların çevre konusunda seslerini duyurmak için alanları vardır. Yeterli alan yoksa bile kadınlar çevreyi koruma konusunda alan yaratmak için hazır görünmektedirler. Kadın olarak çevre için mücadeleleri değerlidir. The main aim of this study is to understand how women activists make room for themselves in environmental movements and what their discourse, concerns and motivations are in environmental problems Turkey. The main research problem of this thesis is whether there is a space for women in environmental movements in Turkey and how women position themselves in environmental movements in Turkey. In Turkey, how women activists frame their concerns to create collective identity, which repertoire and discourse they use to defend natural environment and to express their demands are questioned. Moreover, their motivations for mobilization to raise environmental concerns against top-down neo-liberal economic policies and energy investments of Turkish government are also analyzed. Women's motivations to participate in environmental movement are different in urban and rural areas. While women try to defend lifestyles in urban, they fight for their living spaces against environmental destruction. This study tries to find out how participations and initiatives of women in environmental issues affect struggle for defending nature despite the aggressive attitude of Turkish government related to environmental protection and sustainability. In this thesis, woman-nature relations and women's participation in environmental issues are analyzed with ecofeminist perspective. It is significant to analyze environmental movements in Turkey through gender lenses to understand the impacts of leadership of women environmental movements. As in many other societies in the world, women have close relations with nature also in Turkey. In addition, they play crucial role in green consumerism and sustainability. While some movements do not emerge feminist motivations, women emphasize women-nature relations when they express their concerns about environmental degradation. Although it is difficult to claim there is an ecofeminist movement in Turkey, there is a space for women that can make their voices heard in environmental issues in Turkey. If there is no enough space, they seem to prepare to create this space for their struggle for environmental conservation. So, as being woman, their struggle for environment is valuable. 169

This thesis focuses on the documented (regular) migration experiences of Iranians in Ankara by drawing upon the sociological conceptual tools of Pierre Bourdieu. The aim of this study is to understand, first of all, whether Turkey can be considered as a good destination for documented migration from the perspective of Iranian migrants. The author raises the question of why Iranians leave their home country, and what it is that they are looking for in the host society, which in this study is conceptualized as a `better life and lifestyle`. Secondly, and more importantly, this study attempts to comprehend the roles of different forms of capital (economic, cultural, social and symbolic) and developed strategies in the status passage processes of documented Iranian migrants while they search for a better life and lifestyle. To achieve these aims, the study focuses on two different groups of Iranian migrants in Ankara, being temporary Iranian students and permanent settled Iranians, which allowed a comparison of their objectives, expectations and achieved goals in the host society. After analyzing the educational and occupational incorporation of documented Iranians into the host society, along with the transformation process of their constraints into strategies, the study attempts to comprehend the dispositions of the respondents within the `Iranian habitus` in Ankara to answer the question of whether Turkey fulfilled their expectations as a destination country, and on what basis. Bu tez Pierre Bourdieu'nun kavramsal araçlarını kullanarak Ankara'da yaşayan İranlıların düzenli göç deneyimlerine odaklanmaktadır. Tezin amacı, ilk olarak, İranlı göçmenlerin bakış açısından Türkiye'nin iyi bir hedef ülke sayılıp sayılamayacağını anlamaktır. Yazar, İranlıların kendi ülkelerini terk etme nedenlerini ve yerleştikleri ülkeden ne beklediklerini araştırırken, tez kapsamında bunu `daha iyi yaşam ve yaşam biçimi` olarak kavramlaştırmaktadır. Bu bağlamda tezin ikinci ve daha önemli amacı, İranlı göçmenlerin daha iyi bir yaşam ve yaşam biçimi ararken hedef ülkede yaşadıkları statü geçişi süreçlerinde, farklı sermaye biçimlerinin (ekonomik, kültürel, toplumsal ve sembolik) ve geliştirdikleri stratejilerin rolünü anlamaya çalışmaktır. Bu amaçla, geçici konumdaki İranlı öğrenciler ve de kalıcı konumdaki yerleşik İranlılar olmak üzere Ankara'da yaşayan iki farklı göçmen grubuyla görüşmeler yapılmıştır. Bu iki grup sayesinde İranlı göçmenlerin amaçları, beklentileri ve de gerçekleştirdikleri hedefler arasında bir karşılaştırma yapmak mümkün olmuştur. Çalışmada, görüşülen düzenli İranlı göçmenlerin Ankara'ya eğitimsel ve mesleki uyumu analiz edilirken, zorlukların üstesinden gelmek üzere nasıl stratejiler geliştirdikleri de incelenmiştir. Çalışma, katılımcıların hedef ülkeden beklentilerini Türkiye'de karşılayıp karşılayamadıklarını ve bunun nedenlerini, Ankara'da `İranlı Habitusu` içerisinde gösterdikleri çeşitli beğeniler ve eğilimler üzerinden inceleyerek son bulmaktadır. 299

Kentsel teorilerin de vurguladığı üzere, günümüzde kent mekânı, değişim değerinin etkisiyle kapitalizm tarafından üretilmektedir. Bu durum Ankara için de geçerlidir; son yirmi-otuz yıldır Ankara'nın kentsel dokusunda hissedilir değişiklikler olmuştur. Bu uygulama kentsel eşitsizliği yaratmakta ve derinleştirmekte, aynı zamanda kent hakkını zedelemektedir. Bu doğrultuda kentlilik teorileri, bu biçimde üretilen kentsel mekanlarda yeni bir kentlilik algısının oluştuğundan söz eder. Yeni kentsel oluşumlar arasında, Türkçe'de `rezidans` olarak adlandırılmaya başlayan lüks konutların inşası göze çarpmaktadır. Kent mekânının kapitalist politikalar tarafından üretildiğinin yanı sıra, problemin aşağıdan yukarıya doğru olan kısmı, başka bir deyişle, mekanın toplumsal olarak üretildiği göz önüne alınarak, mekânın kullanıcılarının bu yöndeki rıza ve taleplerinin belirlenmesi için, bu tür konutların tercih nedeni olabilecek mekân kullanımı, algısı ile kentlilik algısı araştırılmıştır. Bu alanlarda yaşayanlarla ve politika üreten konumundaki kesimle yapılan toplam 35 görüşme, mekân kullanımı üzerinden tanımlanan kentlilik algısının tüketime dayalı boş zaman faaliyeti olarak üretildiğini ve güvenlik ve homojenlik endişeleriyle şekillendiğini göstermektedir. Bulgular, bazı çelişkili konumlarla da olsa kentsel değişimlerin genel olarak kabul gördüğüne işaret etmektedir. Yerleşik hale gelmiş kentsel anlayışın yıkılması için öneriler geliştirilmiştir. Today, urban space is produced by capitalist policies driven by exchange value, as suggested by urban theories. Ankara is no exception; its urban setting has changed considerably through several decades. This practice creates and consolidates urban inequality and hampers the right to the city. In this line, theories on urbanity suggest a new perception of urbanity within the urban space thus produced. Within the course of urban developments, the urban space in Ankara has been altered with the construction of luxury residential areas called `rezidans` in Turkish. Having regard to the definite influence of capitalist policies, the bottom-up side of the problem with regard to the theory that space is a social product, the consent and demand from the users of space have been explored in order to comprehend the production of space led by perception and use of space as well as perception of urbanity of the residents. With this approach, a total of 35 interviews were held with residents of these areas and professionals. Findings of the interviews revealed perception of urbanity which is identified via patterns of use of space and demonstrated through consumption-based leisure with security and homogeneity concerns. The findings indicate overall consent for the new urban developments with a number of conflictual positions. Suggestions to overcome the established consent to urban understanding have been provided. 310

Sık sık Asya, Afrika ve Avrupa arasında `köprü görevi gören` bir ülke olarak nitelenen Türkiye uluslararası göç rejimlerinde önemli bir konum kazanmıştır. Göç veren ve göç alan birçok ülkeyle arasındaki bu bağlantı Türkiye'yi uluslararası göçün değişen eğilimlerine karşı oldukça hassas bir konuma taşımakta ve Türkiye'nin göç siyasalarını buna uygun biçimde şekillendirmesini gerektirmektedir. Türkiye'nin bölgesel bir güç ve uluslararası bir aktör olarak gelişen konumu dikkate alındığında bu çalışma Türkiye'nin günümüzdeki göç siyasaları oluşturma sürecindeki belli başlı eğilimleri ve yönelimleri ve bu sürecin Türk dış politikası ve hatta yumuşak güç ile olan bağlantısını ele almayı amaçlamaktadır. Literatürde Türkiye'yi genel anlamda etkileyen farklı göç türleri ve özellikle de Soğuk Savaş sonrası dönemi anlatan çok sayıda çalışma vardır. Bu çalışmanın özgünlüğü ise özellikle 2000'li yıllara odaklanarak, Türkiye'de göç siyasaları oluşturma süreçlerinin siyasetini incelemeyi amaçlamasından ileri gelmektedir. Ayrıca, göç siyasaları yapımı ve Türk dış politikası arasındaki karşılıklı ilişkiyi açıklama ve bu sürecin başlıca eğilim ve yönelimlerini saptama çabaları da çalışmanın özgünlüğüne katkıda bulunmayı amaçlamaktadır. Günümüzde iki temel itici güç olan AB katılım süreci ve Suriye Krizi etkisiyle giderek daha çok konuşulan ve daha görünür hale gelen Türkiye'nin göç siyasaları oluşturma sürecini ayrıştırmak bu çalışmanın genel amacını tamamlar niteliktedir. This connectivity to numerous emigration and immigration countries makes Turkey highly vulnerable to changing trends of international migration and requires Turkey to streamline its migration policy responses accordingly. Given Turkey's evolving position as a regional power as well as an international actor, this study aims to address the major trends and reorientations in the contemporary Turkish immigration policy making and its relation to Turkish foreign policy as well as its soft power. There is a considerable amount of literature written on different forms of migration affecting Turkey generally and on post-Cold War period particularly. The originality of this study is that it aims to unpack the politics of immigration policy making in Turkey via putting the spotlight particularly on 2000s. Furthermore, the attempt to uncover the interrelations between immigration policy making and Turkish foreign policy and to identify major trends and reorientations in immigration policy making aims to contribute to the originality of the study. Unpacking the politics of Turkish immigration policy making that has gradually been debated and become more visible within the scope of two main contemporary drivers namely; the EU accession process and the Syria Crisis have also complemented the overall objective of this study. Bu tez göç olgusunun çok boyutluluğunu sistematik bir şekilde açıklamak üzere teorik ve kuramsal bir çerçeve kurgulamayı ve buradan edinilen bilgileri gerçek bir ampirik örneği analiz etmek için kullanmayı amaçlar. Eleştirel realizm kuramının ana ilkelerinden yola çıkılarak oluşturulan bu kurgu, analize farklı agregasyon düzeylerini, yapı ve aktörü, üretici mekanizmalarda yer alan çeşitli faktörleri, ve de göç ve yerleşimin hem sebep hem de sonuçlarını da katarak göç olgusunun bütünlüklü olarak incelenmesi için gerekli kavramsal araçları sağlar. Bu çalışma Türkiye'den Kıbrıs'ın kuzey kesimine 1975-1980 tarihleri arasında meydana gelen birinci göç dalgası çerçevesindeki yerleşmelere odaklanır ve ampirik bir örnek olarak Bahçeli (Kalograia) köyünü ele alır. This thesis endeavours to construct a theoretical and conceptual framework to systematically explain the multi-dimensionality of migration as well as to apply these insights to analyse an empirical case. The construct, informed by the main principles of critical realism, provides necessary conceptual tools to enable a holistic study of migration through integrating various levels of aggregation; structure and agency; multiple factors that partake in generative mechanisms; and causes as well as consequences of migration and settlement into the analysis. This study focuses on immigration and settlement within the first migration wave taking place between 1975-1980 from Turkey to northern Cyprus and on the Bahçeli village (Kalograia) as its empirical case. Critical realism informs the methodology and the methods of the study, so that deeper lying generative mechanisms are searched for by employing qualitative methods such as participant observation, oral history interviews and in-depth interviews. The endeavour to construct a multi-dimensional and multi-factorial approach to migration enables a distancing from mainstream migration theories which have a focus on economic factors and an incorporation of 'cultural' factors such as the ideas of ethnicity and nation into the causal analysis. Ethnic community building processes are analysed as a part of the holistic explanation of migration that also considers the 'unintended' consequences of long-term settlement of immigrants. The community building aspect also brings to the fore that ideas on ethnicity and nation are socially constructed and are constantly reproduced in context specific contingencies. 429

Bu tez hem mübadil habitusunun dinamiklerini hem de mübadil habitusu, nüfus mübadelesinin sosyal bellekteki etkileri ve mübadillerin kimliklenme süreçlerinin birbiri ile bağlatısını tarif etmek ve açıklamak için teorik ve kavramsal bir çerçeve oluşturmayı amaçlar. Habitus, sosyal bellek ve kimliklenme süreçleri kavramları etrafındaki çok yönlü ilişkiler tezin ana teorik çerçevesini oluşturur ve bu ilişkilerin kavramsallaştırılması mübadil habitusu adı altında incelenir. Bu kavramsal çerçeve, 1923'te Lozan Barış Antlaşması'nın sonucu olan, Türk Yunan Nüfus Mübadelesi ile Yunanistan'dan Türkiye'ye gelen mübadillerin yaşadıkları Samsun, Sarıdünya köyü örneğini anlamak için kullanılır. Köyde tütün üretimi sadece köylüler için ana geçim kaynağı değil, aynı zamanda sosyal belleğin ve ayırt edici günlük pratiklerin yuvalandığı bir alan da yaratır. Mübadil habitusunun dinamiklerini anlamak ve köyün bütüncül bir resmini sunabilmek için bu çalışma 2011 yazı boyunca süren nitel metodları içeren bir alan çalışmasına dayandırılmıştır. Çalışmanın ana sonuçlarına göre, mübadele habitusu (1) nüfus mübadelesi ve memlekete dair sosyal belleğin (2) on yıllar boyunca devam eden tütün üretiminin ve (3) mübadillerin mübadil olmayanlarla günlük etkileşimleri sonucunda ortaya çıkmaktadır. Köylülerin mübadil habitusu ile kendilerini tanımlamalarının yoğunluğuna göre bilinçli ama ilgisiz, ilgili ve aktif köylüler olarak üç ana grup ortaya çıkmaktadır. Tez, mübadele ile ilgili yazına, mübadil deneyimine bütüncül ve orijinal bir bakış getirerek katkı sağlar. This dissertation aims to construct theoretical and conceptual framework to describe and explain the dynamics of the exchangee habitus and the interrelatedness of the exchangee habitus, the social memory of the population exchange and identification processes of the exchangees. These multidirectional relations among the concepts of habitus, social memory and identification processes constitute the main theoretical framework and the conceptualization of these relations is examined by introducing the exchangee habitus. The construction is employed to analyze the case of Sarıdünya village in Samsun, populated by the exchangees from Greece to Turkey in 1923 as a result of Lausanne Peace Treaty. Tobacco production, the main economic activity of the villagers, provided for a nest for social memory and distinctive daily practices. In order to understand dynamics of the exchangee habitus and to provide a holistic picture of the case, the study is based on a field work that spanned in the summer of 2011 including qualitative research methods. According to the main conclusions of the study, first, there emerges specific exchangee habitus as a result of the interrelation among (1) the social memory of the population exchange and the homeland; (2) continuous tobacco production for the decades and (3) the villager's daily encounters with non-exchangee people. Second, according to the villagers' intensity of identification with the exchangee habitus, there are three different groups among the villagers were identified: conscious but indifferent, interested, and committed villagers. The dissertation contributes to the literature on the population exchange with its originality and holistic perspective. 277

The thesis concentrates on how different groups of people challenge the practices ofmusealization which changes the signification of monuments in a city and bring aconservative lifestyle by the use of memorial material. The area of research is selectedas the center of Sivas, an area which has strict claims of representing a Sunni, Turkishidentity even though the mentioned identity is not shared by the entire population ofthe city.While memory is analyzed in this thesis over its utilization by collectivities toemphasize their existence spatially, heterotopia, therefore spaces of the others, arediscussed as the main form of spatial opposition produced by different groups ofpeople. For the purpose of this thesis, musealization, the use of memory andheterotopia take place as the main elements to discuss how the space is constructed toregulate collectivities and how collectivities appropriate space against the dominationof authorities. 361

Türkiye'de toplumsal hareketlerin en hızlı, en beklenmeyen, en geniş katılımlı örneği Haziran 2013'te İstanbul'da ortaya çıktı. Türkiye'nin her tarafına yayılan ve resmi verilere göre 2,5 milyon kişinin katıldığı olaylar, toplumun farklı katmanlarının bir arada hareket etmesi, can kayıpları, geniş ölçekli yaralanmalar ve büyük maddi zararla hafızalarda yer etti. Gezi'nin `ne olduğu` sorunsalı gelecek on yıllar boyunca Türkiye'de cevap aranan sorulardan biri olacak. Bu tez, Gezi'yi; aktörleri, mücadele araçları, ortaya çıkış şekilleri, talepleri ve söylemleri ile önceki dönemlerden farklı bir sosyal hareket dalgasını ifade eden `yeni sosyal hareketler` bağlamında değerlendiriyor. Post endüstriyel toplumun izlerini taşıyan yeni sosyal hareketlerin en önemli özellikleri; eklektik, çok kimlikli, hızlı dönüşebilen, ağlar aracılığıyla yayılan ve materyal olmayan değerleri ön plana alan nitelikte olmaları olarak özetlenebilir. Gezi hareketinin en yoğun yaşandığı yerlerden biri Türkiye'nin başkenti Ankara oldu. Nüfus ve nitelik bakımından büyük bir potansiyeli barındıran ancak genelde toplumsal hareketler konusunda İstanbul'a kıyasla pasif bir profil çizen Ankara, bu defa şiddetli çatışmaların ve farklı semtlerde özgün katılımların merkezi oldu. Bu tez, Gezi'yi Ankara örneğinde değerlendirirken `baskı algısı yeni toplumsal hareket yaratır mı?` sorusuna çerçeve perspektifini de katarak cevap arıyor. Çalışma, Türkiye tarihindeki en etkili sosyal hareketlerden biri olan Gezi'yi derinlemesine analiz etmek için temel yöntem olarak derinlemesine mülakat tekniği benimsenmiş, kelime frekansı analizleri gibi niteliksel yöntemlerle desteklenmiştir. The most rapid, unexpected and broad participation example of the social movements in Turkey emerged in İstanbul during 2013 June. The events expanded all over Turkey in a short period of time with the participation of 2.5 million people and imprinted in the memories with togetherness of different clusters of the society, casualties, injuries and a big material loss. The question of `what is Gezi?` will be a contentious issue for the next decades. This thesis examines Gezi movement as a `new social movement` which refers to a discrete set of social actions by their actors, tools, incidences, demands and discourses. Carrying the traces of post-industrial society, the major characteristics of these movements are revealed by their eclectic, multi identitical, rapidly transformative, network-based, non-materialistic targeted structure. One of the most intensive locations of Gezi has been Ankara, the capital of Turkey. Although Ankara has a significant potential emerging from its quality and population, it is also known with its conformist civil servant city profile. Therefore, it is suprising that, Ankara became one of the centers of the violent conflicts and local originalities despite its pacified social movement profile. This thesis tries to answer the question of `can perception of repression create new social movement?` by evaluating Gezi from a framing perspective in the case of Ankara. The major method of in-depth interviews is supported by several interpretative methods such as word frequency analysis in order to scrutinize and understand various aspects of Gezi which is one of the most influential social movements of Turkish history. 384

Neoliberalizmin temelleri dikkate alındığında; hiyerarşi, katmanlaşma ve sonuç olarak eşitsizlik sürekli bir biçimde yeniden üretilmelidir. Bu sebeple 'sınıf' analitik ve deneysel olarak red edilemez bir öneme sahiptir. Bunu göz önünde bulundurarak Gezi Parkı eylemleri, en çok öne çıkan sivil başkaldırı olarak, neoliberal Türkiye'de bazı yapısal gerçekleri açığa çıkardı – en önemlilerinden biri ise sınıf dinamikleriydi. Bu nedenle, bu tezin temel ilgisi İslamcı proletaryanın ve yeni orta sınıfların (seküler & İslamcı) eleştirel bir şekilde incelenmesidir. Ayrıca, Türkiye'de işçi sınıfı içindeki bölünme, devlet ve bu üç sosyal sınıfın arasındaki ilişki ve bu üç sosyal sınıfın Gezi'de nasıl bir tutum aldıkları sosyo-tarihsel bir yaklaşımla tartışıldı. Bu bağlamda, Gezi kendi başına tikel bir olgu olarak değil, bir kırılma noktası olarak saplanmaktadır. Sonuç olarak, büyüyen seküler yeni orta sınıf dikkate alındığında Türkiye'de neoliberalizmin İslam üzerinden hegemonyasını devam ettirmekte zorlandığı ve Gezi'nin bunu açıkça gösterdiği öne sürülmektedir. Bütün bunlar ele alınırken, diyalektik eleştirel gerçekçilik araştırmanın methodolojik yapısını oluşturmaktadır. Eleştirel litaratür taraması ve ikincil veri/istatistik kullanılmıştır. Ayrıca alanında önde gelen bilim insanları ile derinlemesine mülakatlar 2015 yazında gerçekleştirilmiş ve kullanılmıştır. Considering the rudiments of neoliberalism; hierarchy, stratification, and thus inequality must be continuously reproduced, in which the analytical and empirical importance of 'class' cannot be denied. Bear in mind, Gezi Park protests, which were the most prominent civil uprisings, revealed particular structural staples of neoliberal Turkey – one of the critical is the class dynamics. Accordingly, the primary concern of this thesis offers an examination of Islamic proletariat and the new middle classes (secular & Islamic) in a critical way. Furthermore, the fragmentation of the working class, the relations between the state and the social classes, and how these classes positioned themselves during Gezi are further issues discussed from a sociohistorical perspective. In this sense, Gezi is detected as a breaking point rather than a singular reality by itself. Consequently, it is argued that neoliberalism has been struggling for continuing its hegemony through Islam because of the growing size of secular new middle class, which was manifested by Gezi. Dialectical critical realism constitutes the methodological structure of this research. Critical literature review and analysis of secondary data/statistics are used with a support of in-depth interviews with leading scholars conducted in the summer of 2015. 155

Bu çalışma, Türkiye'de ilk olarak 1990'larda ortaya çıkmaya başlayan ekoköy girişimlerini yaşam tarzı ve topluluk stratejileri üzerinden incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Ekoköy girişimleri, dünyadaki örnekleri gibi, sürdürülebilir ve kendi kendine yeten yerleşim modelleri oluşturmayı, ekolojik pratikleri ve değerleri teşvik etmeyi ve kırsalda edinilen deneyimleri diğer insanlarla paylaşmayı hedeflemektedir. Araştırmaya dâhil edilen girişimlerin parçası olan bireyler, ekolojik ilkeleri temel alan, fiziksel/spritüel sağlık, sağlıklı gıda ve refah ile ilişkilendirdikleri iyi hayat arayışındadır. İyi bir hayatın kentlerde çevresel riskler karşısında tehdit altında olduğunu düşünen bireyler, kentten kaçarak kendi seçtikleri yerleşimlerde ekolojik yaşam tarzını pratik etmeyi alternatif bir yol olarak görmektedirler. The aim of this study is to examine ecovillage initiatives in Turkey by focusing on green lifestyles and community strategies as agents of political change. In Turkey, the first ecovillage initiatives started to appear in the 1990s. Ecovillage initiatives, like ecovillages in the world, are intended to create models of sustainability and self-sufficiency and to promote ecologically sound practices and values. Members of ecovillage initiatives taking part in this study, have concerns about quality of life issues. They associate quality of life with healthy food, physical/spiritual health and well-being, all of which are based upon sustainable ecological principles. Ecovillage dwellers escape from cities to practice an ecological lifestyle in settlements of their choice because they perceive that their basic quality of life is threatened by poor environmental quality in the cities. They emphasize individual actions, not macro-economic, social and political structures, as the major cause of environmental degradation. This study is a modest attempt to explore whether ecovillage initiatives have the potential to become the kind of human-scale, self-sustaining eco-communities suggested by social ecology perspective. Bu tezde, Kaz Dağları bölgesindeki yerel aktörler ve sürdürülebilirlik, aktör-yönelimli bir yaklaşımla incelenmektedir. Bölgedeki sürdürülebilirlik ihtimalleri, yerel aktörlerin tarım, orman köyleri, milli park, ekoturizm ve altın madenciliği gibi çeşitli alanlardaki konumlarına bağlı olduğu gibi, bu alanlarda yerel aktörler ve çevre arasındaki etkileşimlere de bağlıdır. Böylece sürdürülebilirliğin yerel, ulusal ve küresel düzeyde gerçekleşen birçok sosyo-ekonomik ve sosyo-ekolojik dinamik tarafından kurulduğu tartışılmaktadır. Bu bağlamda, kamusal otoriteler, çevreciler, zeytinyağı üreticileri, turizm girişimcileri ve köylüler gibi yerel aktörlerin çoklu faillikleri bu alanlara bakılarak değerlendirilmektedir. Bu tezde derinlemesine mülakat ve katılımcı gözlem gibi etnografik araştırma metotları kullanılmış ve 2010-2013 yılları arasında yerel aktörler ile 138 mülakat gerçekleştirilmiştir. Böylece, sürdürülebilirlik analizi, yerel aktörlerin pratikleri, deneyimleri ve bilgileri dile getirilerek zenginleştirilmiştir.Bu tez eleştirel, bütüncül, katılımcı ve aşağıdan yukarı bir anlayışın yerel düzeyde sürdürülebilirliği gerçekleştirmek için önemini göstermektedir. The prospects for sustainability are contingent on the positions of local actors in the fields such as agriculture, forest villages, the national park, ecotourism, and gold mining as well as on the interactions between local actors and environment in these fields. Thus, it is argued that sustainability is constituted by multiple socio-economic and socio-ecological dynamics taking place on local, national, and global scales. In this sense, multiple agencies of local actors such as public authorities, environmentalists, olive oil producers, tourism entrepreneurs, and villagers are taken into account by referring to these fields.Ethnographic research methods such as in-depth interviews and participant observation were used in this thesis, and 138 interviews were conducted with local actors between the years 2010-2013. The analysis of sustainability was thereby enriched by introducing the practices, experiences, and knowledge of local actors through voicing them. This dissertation shows the importance of a critical, holistic, participatory, and bottom-up approach to realize sustainability on a local scale. Attaining sustainability in the Kaz Mountains Region depends on local participation, local knowledge, sustainable livelihoods, environmental friendly agricultural practices, community-based environmental management, and inclusive ecotourism activities on a local scale. Bu çalışmada depremler karşısında toplumsal sistemlerin, özellikle örgütlerin, işleyişsel kapalılık özelliği üzerinde durdum. Tüm toplumsal sistemler gibi örgütler de kendi örgütsel sınırları dışındaki çevrenin karmaşıklığını indirgerler, ve kendi ufuklarını örgütsel iletişimle sınırlarken kendi kör noktalarını üretirler. AFAD (T.C. Başbakanlık Afet ve Acil Durum Yönetimi Başkanlığı) bir örgüt olarak ileriye yönelik/önetkin afet yönetimi planlarının ve politikalarının stratejik önemdeki bir parçasıdır ki, bu plan ve politikalar siyasal işlev sisteminin deprem sorununa verdiği işlevsel tepkilerdir. Luhmann'ın `işlevsel denklik` kavramında yola çıkarak yerel derneklere ve afet yönetimindeki rollerine Luhmann'cı bir bakış açısıyla yaklaşmayı denedim. Düzce şehir merkezindeki (Türkiye) yerel dernekleri, 17 Ağustos ve 12 Kasım 1999 depremleri sonrasındaki örgütsel etkinlikleri açısından amaçlı kartopu örneklem yoluyla seçip yarı-yapılandırılmış mülakatlar yaparak inceledim. İncelediğim dernekler, 1999 depremlerinden sonra rutin toplumsal işleyişi yeniden çalışır hale getirmek amacıyla uzmanlaşmış afet yönetimi örgütlerinden bağımsız olarak depremle ilgili etkinlik düzenlemiş, ancak günümüzde AFAD tarafından afet planlamasında örgütsel paydaş olarak çoğunlukla tanınmayan yerel dernekler idi. Her ne kadar şu anda AFAD çeşitli bakanlıklar ve yerel paydaşlarla gelecekteki işbirliğini kapsayan stratejik ve taktik planlar yapıyor olsa da, toplumu merkezi olarak yönlendirmeyi amaçlayan bu çabaların kör noktalar nedeniyle yerel bağlamdaki kendini örgütleme geçmişi ile tam örtüşmediği gözlenmektedir. Yaptığım araştırmada, (uzmanlaşmış afet yönetimi örgütleri yoluyla uygulanmaya çalışılan) merkezi yönlendirme ile kendi kendini örgütleyen yerel dernekler arasında karşılıklı işlevsel kapalılık ve çoklu sistemik körlükler nedeniyle örtüşme olmadığını buldum. Like all social systems, organizations reduce the complexity of the environment outside their organizational boundaries, and develop their own blind spots as they narrow their horizons down to organizationally relevant communications only. AFAD (Turkish Republic Prime Ministry Disaster & Emergency Management Presidency) as an organization is a strategic part of proactive disaster management plans and policies, which are functional responses to the problem of earthquakes by the political function system. Starting from Luhmann's concept of `functional equivalents`, I tried to approach the local associations and their role in disaster management from a Luhmannian perspective. I studied a purposive snowball sample of local associations in Düzce (Turkey) through semi-structured field interviews about their organizational activities after the August 17th and November 12th 1999 earthquakes. These local associations organized activities for restoring the routine social functioning after the 1999 earthquakes independent from official, specialized disaster management organizations; but they are mostly not recognized by AFAD as relevant organizational partners in disaster planning today. Although AFAD now plans for future cooperation with various relevant ministries and local parties in its strategic and tactical documents, these efforts of central steering are empirically suffering from blind spots against the history of self-organizing local context. In my research, I found that there is a lack of overlap between organizational efforts of central steering (through established disaster management organizations) and the self-organizing local associations as a result of their reciprocal operational closure and multiple systemic blindnesses. Eleştirel ve radikal kentsel ve toplumsal teoriler ve buna bağlı düşüncelerin analiziyle, çalışma `kent hakları` mücadelesi için `kentsel müşterekleşme –toplumsal- pratikleri` bir süreç olarak ele almaktadır. Araştırma 2010 Avrupa Sosyal Forum'u hazırlanma süreciyle başlamıştır. Through critical and radical urban and social opposition theories and related ideas of analysis, the study considers this as a process of `urban commoning –social- practices` for the `rights to the city`. The research covers the period which starts with the European Social Forum preparation process in 2010. Instead of focusing on an urban transformation project and related oppositions in a neighbourhood of the city, the study has focused on the patterns and dynamics of the urban oppositions in Istanbul which are highly fragmented. The research explores various appropriations of the city with an evaluation of distinct, common and even conflictual aspects as well as alliances, associations and tensions. Bu tezin temel amacı iyi yönetişimin, yerel-bölgesel düzeyde sürdürülebilir insani kalkınma sürecindeki yeri ve önemini araştırmaktır. Bu amaçla, bir iyi yerel yönetişim sürecinin sürdürülebilir insani kalkınma stratejisi temelinde gerçekleştirilen bir yerelbölgesel kalkınma uygulamasının (program ya da proje) çıktıları üzerindeki etkilerini analiz eden teorik bir model kurulmuştur. Ardından Türkiye'de 2001-2006 yıllarında sürdürülebilir insani kalkınma temelinde gerçekleştirilen bir bölgesel kalkınma programı olan, Doğu Anadolu Kalkınma Programı (DAKAP) üstünde bir örnek olay incelemesi gerçekleştirilmiştir. İncelemenin temel bulgusu olarak, iyi yerel yönetişim süreçlerinin yerel-bölgesel düzeyde sürdürülebilir insani kalkınmaya pozitif katkıları olduğu gözlenmiştir. For this purpose, a theoretical model which analyses the influences of a good local governance process on the actual and sustainable outcomes of a subnational development practice (program or project) based on the principles of sustainable human development (SHD) strategy. Then, a case study was performed on a SHD based subnational development program, namely Linking Eastern Anatolia to Progress Program (LEAP), which was implemented in Turkey, in 2001-2006. As the major finding of the case study it is confirmed that good local governance has significant positive influences on the local SHD process that is enhancement of the human well-being, building local endogenous capacities of the localities via accumulation of economic, human and social capital, and local environmental sustainability. Avrupa Birliği (AB), göç hareketlerini ve dış sınırlarını kontrol etmek için birçok farklı politika aracı ve programı hayata geçirmektedir. AB özelikle düzensiz göçe yönelik olarak bu kategoride yer alan göçün kontrolü için delokalizasyon stratejisine başvurmakta ve bu yaklaşımını güvenlik ve ekonomi odaklı söylemler ile desteklemektedir. Bu çerçevede, AB göç ve iltica politikasını dış politikasının bir aracı olarak kullanırken, operasyonel düzeyde de üye ve üye olmayan üyelere yönelik farklı program ve politika araçlarını Avrupalılaştırma ve dışsallaştırma stratejisi aracılığıyla uygulamaktadır. Bu bağlamda, düzensiz göç konusunda AB üye ve üçüncü ülkelere farklı politikalar ve özellikle önlemler empoze ederken, bu politikaların söz konusu ülkelerdeki doğurguları da farklı olmaktadır. In particular, concerning irregular migration, delocalization is used for controlling and supported by securitization and economisation discourse. Within this framework, the EU uses the external dimension of its immigrant and asylum policy as a mode of governance and adopts different policy instruments and tailor-made measures for each country for operationalization. While the EU imposes different measures on the Member States and the non-EU countries through Europeanization and externalization channels; consequences and reactions are also diverse in those countries. As a sending, receiving and most importantly transit as well as both a candidate country; but also still a third country, Turkey provides an excellent settlement to analyse the implications of the externalities of the EU's immigration and asylum policy concerning irregular migration. This study analyses the implications of the EU's immigration and asylum policy with a special focus on irregular migration for Turkey by adopting a multi-level and multi-sited approach. Within this framework, this dissertation focuses on the implications v concerning normative and institutional changes as well as the implementation dimension in Turkey at macro level; on the irregular migration related social networks in specific gateway cities (multi-sited ethnography in Edirne and Izmir) at meso and local levels and finally, examines the policy implications on the migration experiences and lives of irregular transit migrants at micro level. Within this study mainly the 'interpretative approach' is adopted along with qualitative research methods, in particular 'ethnography of policy analysis' is employed to understand how the relevant actors and institutions receive, interpret, implement and are affected by the policies concerned. Bu çalışmanın amacı; Türkiye'de özellikle gecekondu direnişi konusunda eksiklikduyulan kentsel sosyal hareket literatürüne katkıda bulunmak ve stanbul'da2004'ten bu yana kentsel yenileme projeleri adı altında sergilenen gecekonduyıkımlarına karşı ortaya çıkan gecekondu direnişini bir taban (halk) hareketi olarakincelemek ve açıklamaktır. Bu çalışma aynı zamanda kentsel direnişin farklıboyutlarını açıklamak için kullanılan ve de bu sebeple literaturde anlamı sıkçatartışılan ?kentsel sosyal hareket? kavramını da araştırmaktadır. Literatür taramasıtemel olarak kentsel yenileme odaklı mekanın üretimi, kentsel direniş ve de Lefebvreve Castells gibi düşünürlerin teorik açılımlarından yansımalar sunan sosyalhareketler kavramlarını içermektedir. The literature review focuses mainly on the production of space,focusing particularly on urban renewal, urban resistance and social movementsespecially reflecting on the theoretical perspectives of prominent scholars likeLefebvre and Castells. The research focuses on neighborhood resistance ingecekondu areas; however in an attempt to make a categorization of ways of urbanresistance in Istanbul. This thesis is based upon the field study pursued in the periodbetween January and October 2006, in Güzeltepe neighborhood, in Eyüp, being aremarkable example of resistance for various reasons which will be elaborated in thethesis. Güzeltepe which is a part of the urban renewal project in Istanbul isinvestigated with participant observation and in-depth interviews comprising peopleboth participating directly in the resistance and ?ordinary? dwellers, who do not havepolitical affiliations.
