Die Umweltprobenbank des Bundes sammelt standardisiert Human- und Umweltproben und lagert diese veränderungsfrei für zukünftige Untersuchungen. Die große Auswahl an unterschiedlichen Matrizes aus verschiedenen Probenahmegebieten ermöglicht einen Überblick über die Belastungssituation des Menschen und seiner Umwelt. Die Schadstoffanalytik erfolgt sowohl im direkten Anschluss an die Probenahme (Real-Time-Monitoring) als auch in retrospektiven Untersuchungen an den eingelagerten Proben. Die hohe Standardisierung ermöglicht die Reproduzier- und Vergleichbarkeit der gesammelten Proben und lässt so eine Aussage über die zeitliche Veränderung der Belastungen zu. Die Umweltprobenbank des Bundes ist ein exzellentes Werkzeug für das Monitoring der Schadstoffbelastungen der Umwelt und des Menschen. Geringe zeitliche oder marginale regionale Unterschiede an Schadstoffkonzentrationen sind erfassbar, da die hierzu notwendigen Analysen standardisierter Umwelt- und Humanproben aus unterschiedlichen Jahren und Regionen zum gleichen Zeitpunkt durchgeführt werden können. Die Langzeitbeobachtung von Schadstoffbelastungen in Umwelt- und Humanproben ist eine wichtige Grundlage für gesetzliche Regulierungen von Chemikalien und deren Erfolgskontrolle. Damit ist die Umweltprobenbank des Bundes ein essenzielles Instrument des umweltbezogenen Gesundheitsschutzes in Deutschland.

er- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the environment mostly originate from emissions of previously unregulated PFAS. However, there are also many documented incidents of accidental releases. To track such releases, it is essential to distinguish between typical background contamination and legally relevant incidents. This requires a comprehensive overview of all PFAS present in the environment, which is currently only possible to a limited extent due to the large variety of individual compounds. In the present study, a multimethod for capturing 41 PFAS including perfluoroalkyl acid (PFAA) precursors is introduced. The applicability of the method was tested on terrestrial, freshwater and marine samples from the German Environmental Specimen Bank (ESB), thereby providing a rough overview of PFAS contamination in German environment. Special focus was put on soil samples from ESB sites across Germany in comparison to soil samples from a polluted site in south-west Germany. The method was successfully applied to environmental samples. In total, 31 PFAS were detected, among them PFAA precursors and fluorinated ethers. Substance patterns differed between sites and matrices. In ESB soil samples from 2014 (n = 11), the sum of all captured PFAS ranged between 0.75 and 19.5 mg kg−1 dry weight (dw), while concentrations between 416 mg kg−1 and 3530 mg kg−1 were detected in samples from the incident site (n = 10). In other matrices, total PFAS concentrations were magnitudes lower. Highest concentrations were observed for PFOS in bream livers from the Saale (226 mg kg−1). Given the heterogeneous patterns, it will require further broadly-based monitoring data to allow for a solid estimation of relevant background levels. The data provided here may support the differentiation between background levels and hotspot contaminations.

Zur Überprüfung möglicher Konzentrationstrends von PFCs in der marinen Umwelt wurde ein retrospektives Monitoring mit Silbermöweneiern durchgeführt. Untersucht wurden Eiproben der Zeiträume 1988-2008 (Nordsee) und 1991-2008 (Ostsee) aus der Umweltprobenbank des Bundes. Die PFCs mit den höchsten nachgewiesenen Konzentrationen waren Perfluoroctansulfonsäure (PFOS) und Perfluoroctansäure (PFOA). Nordsee-Eier enthielten in den meisten Jahren mehr PFOS als Ostsee-Eier. Während die PFOS-Konzentrationen in den Möweneiern von der Nordsee im Beobachtungszeitraum stark variierten, wurde für PFOS in Ostsee-Eiern, die aus einem Bereich mit nur geringen anthropogenen Einflüssen stammen, ein ansteigender Trend beobachtet. Die PFOA-Gehalte in Eiern von der Ostsee-Insel waren dagegen im Vergleich zu den Möweneiern von den Nordsee-Inseln niedrig.

On behalf of the Environmental Specimen Bank (ESB) group of the German Federal Environment Agency (UBA), a workshop was organized to share experiences with experts from sludge monitoring programs, to balance the current state of research on the methodology and to discuss the need for sludge investigations for chemicals risk assessment. This report gives on overview on the presented data from several monitoring programs and on the discussions on strategies to use sewage sludge monitoring for the management of chemicals (e.g., in the context of the EU REACH Directive). Finally, the results from three working groups are presented which discussed the possible implementation of a sewage sludge monitoring within the German ESB program.

Background Due to the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive and other legal regulations (e.g., national laws like the German Federal Soil Protection Act), but also due to the implementation of the new EU chemicals management system REACH, environmental monitoring will gain increasing importance for the surveillance of environmental quality as well as for the assessment of chemicals. Against this background, the Work Group on 'Environmental Monitoring' of the Division of 'Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology' within the German Chemical Society has compiled a position paper on substance-related environmental monitoring. Scope Core elements of this position paper are the definitions of important terms like monitoring, exposure monitoring, effect monitoring, and integrated monitoring. Moreover, temporal and spatial aspects (monitoring of spatial distributions, trend monitoring, and retrospective monitoring) and their applications are discussed. The main focus of this position paper is the coverage of aspects which have to be observed for the preparation and implementation of a monitoring program. Essential is the clear specification of the targets of the monitoring which determine the development of the monitoring concept and its realization, e.g., if environmental media (compartments) or organisms are most appropriate as samples for the aim of the study. Of course, also the properties of the target substances are important (e.g., lipophilicity/bioaccumulation as pre-requisite for an exposure monitoring with organisms). Finally, the monitoring phases of sample planning, sampling, storage and transport of samples, selection of analytical methods, quality assurance measures as well as reporting are discussed. Perspectives An important issue for the future is to link the quantification of chemicals in environmental compartments (exposure and pollution monitoring) more closely to the study of biological effects (effect monitoring) than has been the case up to now. Furthermore, by inclusion of a spatial differentiation, a comprehensive evaluation of the state of an ecosystem can be obtained and the relevance of the results improved. Practical examples of monitoring studies which illustrate various aspects covered in this position paper will be presented in a series of publications by members of the Work Group in the following issues of this journal.

Hintergrund: Durch Anforderungen von gesetzlichen Regelungen wie der EU-Wasserrahmenrichtlinie oder dem Bundes-Bodenschutzgesetz, aber auch durch die Einführung der neuen EU-Chemikalienregulierung REACh, kommt dem Umweltmonitoring steigende Bedeutung bei der Überprüfung der Umweltqualität zu. Deshalb wurde vom Arbeitskreis Umweltmonitoring in der GDCh-Fachgruppe Umweltchemie und Ökotoxikologie ein Positionspapier zum stoffbezogenen Umweltmonitoring erarbeitet. Gegenstand: Schwerpunkt des Positionspapiers ist die Beschreibung von Aspekten, die bei der Vorbereitung und Durchführung von Monitoring-Programmen zu beachten sind. Entscheidend ist zunächst die klare Festlegung der Ziele des Monitoring, die dann bei der Konzeptentwicklung zu berücksichtigen sind. Auch die Eigenschaften der zu untersuchenden Stoffe sind zu berücksichtigen (z.B. Lipophilie/Bioakkumulation als Voraussetzung für ein Expositionsmonitoring mit Organismen). Weiterhin werden wichtige Aspekte der Phasen Probenahmeplanung, Probenahme, Lagerung und Transport von Proben, Auswahl von Untersuchungsverfahren, Qualitätssicherung sowie Berichterstellung vorgestellt. Perspektive: Ein wichtiges Anliegen für die Zukunft ist, chemisch-analytische Bestimmungen (Expositions-/Belastungsmonitoring) stärker als bislang mit biologischen Wirkungsuntersuchungen (Effektmonitoring) zu verknüpfen und räumlich zu differenzieren, um eine möglichst umfassende Bewertung des Zustandes der untersuchten Ökosysteme zu erreichen und die Relevanz der erhaltenen Aussagen zu steigern.

Dieses Positionspapier wurde vom Arbeitskreis Umweltmonitoring der GDCh-Fachgruppe Umweltchemie und Ökotoxikologie erarbeitet. In Teil 1 werden wichtige Begriffe definiert und gesetzliche Rahmenbedingungen sowie wissenschaftliche Grundlagen beschrieben, die für die Durchführung eines Umweltmonitorings relevant sind (Mitt. Umweltchem. Ökotox. 13(2), 2007, 34). In Teil 2 werden Hinweise zur konkreten Umsetzung von Monitoringprogrammen gegeben. In archived samples from the German environmental specimen bank (ESB) organotin compounds including tributyltin (TBT) and triphenyltin (TPT) as well as their potential degradation products were quanti.ed. Muscles of bream (Abramis brama) sampled in the period 1993-2003 from the rivers Rhine, Elbe, Saale, Mulde, Saar, and from Lake Belau (period 1988-2003) were analyzed by gas chromatography/atomic emission detection-coupling after extraction and derivatization. TBT was detected in nearly all samples and a decrease in levels was observed at all sampling sites. At most sites, the reduction seemed to be a result of the ban on the use of TBTbased antifoulants for the application on small boats, which became e.ective in Germany in 1989. Highest TBT levels were found in fish from the Elbe near Blankenese (470 ng TBT cation per g fresh weight; in 1995) and lowest in bream from Lake Belau (

Breams (Abramis brama) and zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) from freshwater, and common mussels (Mytilus edulis) from marine ecosystems, archived in the German Environmental Specimen Bank were analyzed for the presence of 4-nonylphenol (NP), 4-tert-octylphenol (OP), nonylphenol monoethoxylate (NP1EO), and octylphenol monoethoxylate (OP1EO). The samples were collected in the German rivers Elbe, Rhine, and Saar, and in Lake Belau between 1992 and 2001, as well as in the North Sea and Baltic Sea between 1985 and 2001. The main purpose of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of imposed reduction measures regarding the use of alkylphenol ethoxylates. NP1EO and OP were detected in all breams. NP was predominantly above the limit of quantification (LOQ, 2 ng/g; all data on a wet weight basis), and OP1EO was mostly below the LOQ (0.2 ng/g.) Maximal concentrations of 112 ng/g NP, 259 ng/g NP1EO, 5.5 ng/g OP, and 2.6 ng/g OP1EO were found in Saar breams from 1994. NP was detected in all zebra mussels from the river Elbe (up to 41 ng/g), whereas in rather few samples OP and NP1EO were found at low levels. OP1EO was not detected in any sample. Concentrations in mussels and breams from the reference site Lake Belau were below the LOQ for all compounds. In marine biota NP was found until 1997 with maximum concentrations up to 9.7 ng/g, whereas NP1EO was detected at levels between 1.7 and 12.9 ng/g in very few samples collected at the end of the 1980s. A tendency of the concentrations to decrease was obvious for all sampling sites; it was most pronounced for NP1EO and NP after 1996/1997. The effectiveness of the reduction measures is most evident at the Saar sampling site Güdingen and the North Sea sampling site Eckwarderhörne.

In diesem Beitrag wird vorgestellt, wie mit einer einfachen Kopplungsmethode von ICP-OES und SEC-HPLC Kupferspezies in wässrigen Bodeneluaten klassifiziert werden können. Das Kopplungssystem ermöglicht die schnelle Beurteilung, ob Kupfer überwiegend "nackt" als hydratisiertes Ion oder durch Huminstoffe komplexiert in Lösung vorliegt. Zwar ist Kupfer für viele Organismen ein essentielles Element, doch wirken freie Kupfer-Ionen in geringen Dosen toxisch auf verschiedene Pflanzen und Mikroorganismen. Zur Abschätzung der Mobilisierbarkeit, Bioverfügbarkeit und damit der potentiellen Ökotoxizität der Kupfer-Ionen kann diese Kopplungs-Methode herangezogen werden.

In the German Federal Soil Protection and Contaminated Sites Ordinance (Bundes-Bodenschutz- und Altlastenverordnung, June 19, 1999) precautionary values are stated, which, if exceeded, give reason to suspect harmful effects in soils. Depending upon soil type (sandy, silty, and clayey), the respective precautionary values for total chromium as determined in the aqua regia extracts are 30, 60 and 100 mg kg (exp -1). It is assumed that a maximum of 10 per cent of the total chromium is chromium(VI). This assumption seems to apply to natural soils, where only low chromium(VI) concentrations were found, even with high total chromium levels (Rüdel and Terytze, 1999). However, in anthropogenically influenced soils higher chromium(VI) contents may occur. In these cases the chromium(VI) content may be high enough to damage soil organisms though the total chromium concentration is below the respective precautionary value. Therefore, direct determination of the chromium(VI) content seems to be advisable. For this purpose a photometric method was enacted as a German standard in 1999 (DIN 19734, 1999). The current study was performed in order to examine whether or not the soil threshold values for chromium(VI) given in the Federal Soil Protection Ordinance could protect the habitat function of the soil. The effects of chromium(VI) were investigated in ecotoxicological standard tests with plants, earthworms and micro-organisms in two soils spiked with chromium(VI). The actual chromium(VI) concentrations were determined following the standard method DIN 19734 in order to correlate these chromium(VI) concentrations to potential biological effects.

Im Auftrag des Umweltbundesamtes hat das Fraunhofer Insitut für Umweltchemie und Ökotoxikologie (IUCT) eine Methode zur Bewertung der Umweltverträglickeit von Offshore-Chemikalien entwickelt. Das Verfahren ist sowohl auf komplette Offshore-Produkte und Additivgemische als auch auf einzelne Inhaltsstoffe anwendbar. Grundlage der Methode ist das Vorgehen, das bei der Produktbewertung von Waschmitteln zur Vergabe des EG-Umweltzeichens angewandt wird. Neben den Einzelkriterien Ökotoxizitaet, Bioakkumulation und Abbau wird die Stofffracht berücksichtigt sowie als integraler Faktor das kritische Verdünnungsvolumen. Nach Eingabe der Stoffdaten in eine Datenmaske erfolgt die Bewertung PC-gestützt. Der Anwender erhält durch das Modell Entscheidungshilfen für die Auswahl von Produkten. Bei der Auswahl zwischen mehreren Offshore-Chemikalien gleicher technischer Spezifikation kann auf diese Weise das Produkt mit der geringsten potentiellen Gefährdung der marinen Umwelt identifiziert werden.
