Objetivos: O presente estudo teve como objetivo relatar a analise de um prontuario de paciente submetido ao tratamento de uma queimadura por hipoclorito de sodio em mucosa oral devido a extravasamento de hipoclorito de sodio durante o tratamento endodontico. Materiais e Metodos: Atraves da analise de prontuarios de pacientes atendidos na disciplina de Estagio Supervisionado do Complexo Odontologico da FSG Centro Universitario entre os anos de 2017 e 2018, selecionou-se um prontuario de um paciente que sofreu queimadura acidental devido ao extravasamento de hipoclorito de sodio. Resultados: O extravasamento de hipoclorito resultou numa lesao por queimadura na lingual do elemento 45. Como medidas, o paciente foi orientado a usar medicacao sistemica, medicamento Ad-Muc ® associado a bochechos com clorexidina a 0,12% e sessoes de laserterapia de baixa intensidade. Conclusao: O presente relato destaca os problemas associados ao extravasamento acidental de solucao irrigadora a base de hipoclorito de sodio. O adequado diagnostico, juntamente com a conduta adotada, associando medicacao sistemica, topica e realizacao de laserterapia, neste caso, se mostrou efetiva. Purpose We hypothesized that fragmentation of the cystic capsule during surgery would influence the recurrence rate of odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) regardless of the treatment modality chosen. Materials and Methods We reviewed, in a retrospective study, cases diagnosed as OKCs on histopathologic examination at the oral pathology department between 1991 and 2013. Fragmentation data were obtained from the records of the oral surgical department. Results Fragmentation of the capsules of OKCs during surgery did not affect recurrence, irrespective of the chosen treatment modality. The addition of techniques such as cryotherapy lowered the risk of recurrence of OKCs (P = .013) compared with after enucleation alone. Furthermore, patients with associated nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome had a greater recurrence rate than that of those with no associated syndrome (P = .033). Conclusions Fragmentation of the cystic capsule does not play an important role in the rate of OKC recurrence. The rate of recurrence can be modified by using additional strategies such as cryotherapy.

Background The aim of this research was to assess the expression of aldehyde dehydrogenase 1 (ALDH1) and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) markers in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), and to correlate them with the clinical and histopathological parameters of a patient cohort with follow-up over an 8-year period. Material and Methods For this, seventeen HNSCC and non-neoplastic adjacent epithelium (AE) samples were subjected to laser microdissection and real-time PCR to evaluate the mRNA expression of ALDH1, E-cadherin (E-CAD), N-cadherin (N-CAD), and vimentin (VIM). Also, immunohistochemistry was performed for ALDH1, E-CAD, N-CAD, and VIM in the tumor center (TC), invasion front (IF), and AE of the seventeen samples. Stafne bone defect consists of an asymptomatic, anatomic condition of uncertain origin and rare evolvement, often discovered at random in routine radiographic examinations. It is usually consisted on mandibular salivary gland inclusion as a developmental anomaly represented by a bone concavity usually containing submandibular gland tissue. A 39-year-old woman presented a hypodense lesion in the condyle of the left side of the jaw, discovered randomly. Because of the fact that the lesion mimics a cyst of odontogenic origin, excisional biopsy and later histopathologic analysis were performed. The histologic slices revealed the presence of ectopic serous salivary glands located in the head of the left condyle, characterizing a Stafne defect. Faced with this diagnosis, the conduct was the patient´s periodic follow-up.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2016-04-01 Aims To detect the presence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA in different sources of materials from a matched group of patients with oral lichen planus (OLP) and a group of people without OLP lesions, and to correlate the presence of virus with epidemiological variables of the groups studied. Methods Fresh tissue samples, saliva, exfoliated cells and plasma of 24 patients with OLP lesions (cases) and 17 patients without OLP lesions (controls) were collected. EBV was detected by nested PCR. Results Viral positivity was obtained in 62.5% of tissue samples; in 70.8% of exfoliated cell samples; in 33.3% of blood plasma samples and in 75% of saliva samples in the cases; and in 35.3% of tissue samples; 82.4% of exfoliated cell samples; in 47.1% of blood plasma samples and in 64.7% of saliva samples in the controls. There was a predominance of women in both groups. Variables not atrophic-erosive were most affected by EBV. Conclusions No relationship between EBV and OLP was found. However, all sources tested in this study were considered suitable for the detection of viruses. Molluscum contagiosum is a viral infectious disease that mainly affects children and young adults. The lesions occur predominantly in the skin and genitalia; involvement of the oral soft tissues is uncommon. Oral lesions occur most frequently on the lips, tongue, and buccal mucosa. A 20-year-old woman presented with pink, smooth, sessile, and painless papules on the upper lip with an evolution time of 2 weeks. The conduct was excisional biopsy of the lesion and histopathologic examination. The histologic slices revealed a well-defined epithelial proliferation, with areas of central depression, filled with keratinocytes altered by the virus. The final diagnosis was molluscum contagiosum. The patient consulted her gynecologist, who found lesions on the genitals.

Combined nevi are composed of 2 or more distinct populations of nevus cells. In the oral cavity it is usually blue nevi combined with common intramucosal nevi. In the blue nevus component, the dendritic cells can reach very deep into the mucosa, even reaching the periosteum. An 8-year-old female patient underwent an examination in March 2018 with a dark brown lesion located on the right upper maxillary gingiva without pain. However, the mother reported an increase in size during the last months. An excisional biopsy was performed and the material sent for anatomopathologic examination. The histologic slice featured a combination of 2 distinct forms of nevus. At the top, near the epithelium is mostly intradermal nevus. At the bottom, there is a blue nevus composed of elongated, dendritic, and heavily pigmented melanocytes accompanied by melanophages. Morphologic findings were consistent with combined nevi (blue and intramucosal).

Introduction: The sialolithiasis are calcified structures of slow and gradual growth, that develop in the ductal system or within a salivary gland, obstructing or hindering the normal flow of saliva. Objective: Perform a systematic review of the literature about the occurrence of sialolithiasis and perform a survey of cases registered in the Oral Pathology Laboratory of the Institute of Biological Sciences ( ICB) of University of Passo Fundo/RS (UPF). Methods: To perform the literature review were used databases relevant to the subject and the data found in the epidemiologic survey , these were collected and tabulated in a spreadsheet ( Excel) and analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequency. Conclusions: it can be conclude that the sialolithiasis is a common condition consisting in the formation of calcified concretions in the ductal system or within a salivary gland, being more prevalent in the duct of the submandibular gland unilaterally and in caucasian female patients. Are rarely sent for histophatology, viewed the small number of cases surveyed. The diagnostic is done by means of clinical history medical / dental well done and treatment depends on the size and location of the calculation, the presence of infection and experience of professional.

OBJETIVO: O presente estudo teve como objetivo realizar um estudo epidemiologico observacional transversal dos casos de leucoplasia bucal registrados no Servico de Diagnostico Histopatologico do Instituto de Ciencias Biologicas (ICB) da Universidade de Passo Fundo (UPF). MATERIAIS E METODOS: Foram considerados os casos diagnosticados como "leucoplasia bucal" entre os anos de 1989 e 2011. Os dados que dizem respeito a idade, sexo e raca dos pacientes, bem como os dados de localizacao da enfermidade na cavidade bucal foram obtidos das requisicoes de exame histopatologico de cada paciente. Foram observados a presenca de habitos deleterios nos pacientes acometidos e as caracteristicas clinicas das lesoes levantadas. Os dados coletados foram analisados por meio de estatistica descritiva de frequencia e expressos em tabelas e/ou graficos, a fim de serem confrontados com os dados da literatura. RESULTADOS E CONCLUSAO: Pode-se inferir que a epoca da vida mais afetada pela leucoplasia foi a 7a decada da vida, a cor branca foi predominante, o sexo masculino o mais afetado e a regiao mais acometida foi a mucosa jugal na linha de oclusao. Exposicao solar, trauma e fumo foram as principais causas encontradas no estudo, porem houve muitos laudos incompletos, o que leva a duvida quanto aos demais casos (a maior parte neste estudo). O tempo de evolucao das lesoes foi relativamente rapido, a maioria aparecendo de 0-6 meses em boca, e normalmente assintomaticas. A coloracao branca, sem presenca de displasia, foi predominante e as caracteristicas das lesoes se assemelharam em todos os casos.

Central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) of the jaws represents a localized and benign neoplastic lesion sometimes characterized by aggressive osteolytic proliferation. The World Health Organization defines it as an intraosseous lesion composed of cellular and dense connective tissues that contain multiple hemorrhagic foci, an aggregation of multinucleated giant cells, and occasional bone tissue trabeculae. The origin of this lesion is uncertain; however, factors such as local trauma, inflammation, intraosseous hemorrhage, and genetic abnormalities have been identified as possible causes. CGCG generally affects those younger than 30 years and occurs more frequently in women (2:1). This lesion corresponds to approximately 7% of all benign tumors of the jaws, with prevalence in the anterior region of the jaw. Aggressive lesions are characterized by symptoms, such as pain, numbness, rapid growth, cortical perforation, root resorption, and a high recurrence rate after curettage. In contrast, nonaggressive CGCGs have a slow rate of growth, may contain sparse trabeculation, and are less likely to move teeth or cause root resorption or cortical perforation. Nonaggressive CGCGs are generally asymptomatic lesions and thus are frequently found on routine dental radiographs. Radiographically, the 2 forms of CGCG present as radiolucent, expansive, unilocular or multilocular masses with well-defined margins. The histopathology of CGCG is characterized by multinucleated giant cells, surrounded by round, oval, and spindle-shaped mononuclear cells, scattered in dense connective tissue with hemorrhagic and abundant vascularization foci. The final diagnosis is determined by histopathologic analysis of the biopsy specimen. The preferred treatment for CGCG consists of excisional biopsy, curettage with a safety margin, and partial or total resection of the affected bone. Conservative treatments include local injections of steroids, calcitonin, and antiangiogenic therapy. Drug treatment using antibiotics, painkillers, and corticosteroids and clinical and radiographic monitoring are necessary for approximately 10 days after surgery. There are only a few cases of spontaneous CGCG regression described in the literature; therefore, a detailed case report of CGCG regression in a 12-year-old boy with a 4-year follow-up is presented and compared with previous studies.
