Search

Pan-STARRS1 has carried out a set of distinct synoptic imaging sky surveys including the $3\pi$ Steradian Survey and the Medium Deep Survey in 5 bands ($grizy_{P1}$). The mean 5$\sigma$ point source limiting sensitivities in the stacked 3$\pi$ Steradian Survey in $grizy_{P1}$ are (23.3, 23.2, 23.1, 22.3, 21.4) respectively. The upper bound on the systematic uncertainty in the photometric calibration across the sky is 7-12 millimag depending on the bandpass. The systematic uncertainty of the astrometric calibration using the Gaia frame comes from a comparison of the results with Gaia: the standard deviation of the mean and median residuals ($ \Delta ra, \Delta dec $) are (2.3, 1.7) milliarcsec, and (3.1, 4.8) milliarcsec respectively. The Pan-STARRS system and the design of the PS1 surveys are described and an overview of the resulting image and catalog data products and their basic characteristics are described together with a summary of important results. We present the details of the photometric and astrometric calibration of the Pan-STARRS1 $3\pi$ Survey. The photometric goals were to reduce the systematic effects introduced by the camera and detectors, and to place all of the observations onto a photometric system with consistent zero points over the entire area surveyed, the ~30,000 square degrees north of $\delta$ = -30 degrees. The astrometric calibration compensates for similar systematic effects so that positions, proper motions, and parallaxes are reliable as well. AIMS: In their 1st extension to the Milky Way Star Clusters (MWSC) survey, Schmeja et al. applied photometric filters to the 2MASS to find new cluster candidates that were subsequently confirmed or rejected by the MWSC pipeline. To further extend the MWSC census, we aimed at discovering new clusters by conducting an almost global search in proper motion catalogues as a starting point. METHODS: We first selected high-quality samples from the PPMXL and UCAC4 for comparison and verification of the proper motions. For 441 circular proper motion bins (radius 15 mas/yr) within $\pm$50 mas/yr, the sky outside a thin Galactic plane zone ($|b|$$<$5$^{\circ}$) was binned in small areas ('sky pixels') of 0.25$\times$0.25 deg$^2$. Sky pixels with enhanced numbers of stars with a certain common proper motion in both catalogues were considered as cluster candidates. After visual inspection of the sky images, we built an automated procedure that combined these representations of the sky for neighbouring proper motion subsamples after a background correction. RESULTS: About half of our 692 candidates overlapped with known clusters (46 globular and 68 open clusters in the Galaxy, about 150 known clusters of galaxies) or the Magellanic Clouds. About 10% of our candidates turned out to be 63 new open clusters confirmed by the MWSC pipeline. They occupy predominantly the two inner Galactic quadrants and have apparent sizes and numbers of high-probable members slightly larger than those of the typically small MWSC clusters, whereas their other parameters (ages, distances, tidal radii) fall in the typical ranges. As our search aimed at finding compact clusters, we did not find new very nearby (extended) clusters. An earlier analysis of the Milky Way Star Cluster (MWSC) catalogue revealed an apparent lack of old (> 1 Gyr) open clusters in the solar neighbourhood (< 1 kpc). To fill this gap we undertook a search for hitherto unknown star clusters, assuming that the missing old clusters reside at high Galactic latitudes |b|> 20{\deg}. We were looking for stellar density enhancements using a star count algorithm on the 2MASS point source catalogue. To increase the contrast between potential clusters and the field, we applied filters in colour-magnitude space according to typical colour-magnitude diagrams of nearby old open clusters. The subsequent comparison with lists of known objects allowed us to select thus far unknown cluster candidates. For verification they were processed with the standard pipeline used within the MWSC survey for computing cluster membership probabilities and for determining structural, kinematic, and astrophysical parameters. In total we discovered 782 density enhancements, 522 of which were classified as real objects. Among them 139 are new open clusters with ages 8.3 < log (t [yr]) < 9.7, distances d < 3 kpc, and distances from the Galactic plane 0.3 < Z < 1 kpc. This new sample has increased the total number of known high latitude open clusters by about 150%. Nevertheless, we still observe a lack of older nearby clusters up to 1 kpc from the Sun. Context. Galactic open clusters (OCs) mainly belong to the young stellar population in the Milky Way disk, but are there groups and complexes of OCs that possibly define an additional level in hierarchical star formation? Current compilations are too incomplete to address this question, especially regarding radial velocities (RVs) and metallicities ($[M/H]$). Aims. Here we provide and discuss newly obtained RV and $[M/H]$ data, which will enable us to reinvestigate potential groupings of open clusters and associations. Methods.We extracted additional RVs and $[M/H]$ from the RAdial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) via a cross-match with the Catalogue of Stars in Open Cluster Areas (CSOCA). For the identified OCs in RAVE we derived RV and $[M/H]$ from a cleaned working sample and compared the results with previous findings. Results. Although our RAVE sample does not show the same accuracy as the entire survey, we were able to derive reliable RV for 110 Galactic open clusters. For 37 OCs we publish RV for the first time. Moreover, we determined $[M/H]$ for 81 open clusters, extending the number of OCs with $[M/H]$ by 69., Comment: 21 pages, 9 Tables, 21 Figures

We present the stellar atmospheric parameters (effective temperature, surface gravity, overall metallicity), radial velocities, individual abundances and distances determined for 425 561 stars, which constitute the fourth public data release of the RAdial Velocity Experiment (RAVE). The stellar atmospheric parameters are computed using a new pipeline, based on the algorithms of MATISSE and DEGAS. The spectral degeneracies and the 2MASS photometric information are now better taken into consideration, improving the parameter determination compared to the previous RAVE data releases. The individual abundances for six elements (magnesium, aluminum, silicon, titanium, iron and nickel) are also given, based on a special-purpose pipeline which is also improved compared to that available for the RAVE DR3 and Chemical DR1 data releases. Although they are the main constituents of the Galactic disk population, for half of the open clusters in the Milky Way reported in the literature nothing is known except the raw position and an approximate size. The main goal of this study is to determine a full set of uniform spatial, structural, kinematic, and astrophysical parameters for as many known open clusters as possible. On the basis of stellar data from PPMXL and 2MASS, we used a dedicated data-processing pipeline to determine kinematic and photometric membership probabilities for stars in a cluster region. For an input list of 3784 targets from the literature, we confirm that 3006 are real objects, the vast majority of them are open clusters, but associations and globular clusters are also present. For each confirmed object we determined the exact position of the cluster centre, the apparent size, proper motion, distance, colour excess, and age. For about 1500 clusters, these basic astrophysical parameters have been determined for the first time. For the bulk of the clusters we also derived the tidal radius. We estimated additionally average radial velocities for more than 30% of the confirmed clusters. The present sample (called MWSC) reaches both the central parts of the Milky Way and its outer regions. It is almost complete up to 1.8 kpc from the Sun and also covers neighbouring spiral arms. However, for a small subset of the oldest open clusters ($\log t \gtrsim 9$) we found some evidence of incompleteness within about 1 kpc from the Sun., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

The Hyades cluster is an ideal target to study the dynamical evolution of a star cluster over the entire mass range due to its intermediate age and proximity to the Sun. We wanted to extend the Hyades mass function towards lower masses down to 0.1 Msol and to use the full three-dimensional spatial information to characterize the dynamical evolution of the cluster. We performed a kinematic and photometric selection using the PPMXL and Pan-STARRS1 sky surveys, to search for cluster members up to 30 pc from the cluster centre. We determined our detection efficiency and field star contamination rate to derive the cluster luminosity and mass functions down to masses of 0.1 Msol. The thorough astrometric and photometric constraints minimized the contamination. A minimum spanning tree algorithm was used to quantify the mass segregation. We discovered 43 new Hyades member candidates with velocity perpendicular to the Hyades motion up to 2 km/s. They have mass estimates between 0.43 and 0.09 Msol, for a total mass of 10 Msol. This doubles the number of Hyades candidates with masses smaller than 0.15 Msol. We provide an additional list of 11 possible candidates with velocity perpendicular to the Hyades motion up to 4 km/s. The cluster is significantly mass segregated. The extension of the mass function towards lower masses provided an even clearer signature than estimated in the past. We also identified as likely Hyades member an L0 dwarf previously assumed to be a field dwarf. The Hyades cluster is known to harbour ten so-called classical white dwarf members. Numerous studies through the years have predicted that more than twice this amount of degenerate stars should be associated with the cluster. Using the PPMXL catalog of proper motions and positions, a recent study proposed 17 new white dwarf candidates. We review the membership of these candidates by using published spectroscopic and photometric observations, as well as by simulating the contamination from field white dwarfs. In addition to the ten classical Hyades white dwarfs, we find six white dwarfs that may be of Hyades origin and three more objects that have an uncertain membership status due to their unknown or imprecise atmospheric parameters. Among those, two to three are expected as field stars contamination. Accurate radial velocity measurements will confirm or reject the candidates. One consequence is that the longstanding problem that no white dwarf older than ~340 Myr appears to be associated with the cluster remains unsolved., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in the Astronomy and Astrophysics journal

Aims: On the basis of the PPMXL star catalogue we performed a survey of star clusters in the second quadrant of the Milky Way. Methods: From the PPMXL catalogue of positions and proper motions we took the subset of stars with near-infrared photometry from 2MASS and added the remaining 2MASS stars without proper motions (called 2MAst, i.e. 2MASS with astrometry). We developed a data-processing pipeline including interactive human control of a standardised set of multi-dimensional diagrams to determine kinematic and photometric membership probabilities for stars in a cluster region. The pipeline simultaneously produced the astrophysical parameters of a cluster. From literature we compiled a target list of presently known open and globular clusters, cluster candidates, associations, and moving groups. From established member stars we derived spatial parameters (coordinates of centres and radii of the main morphological parts of clusters) and cluster kinematics (average proper motions and sometimes radial velocities). For distance, reddening, and age determination we used specific sets of theoretical isochrones. Tidal parameters were obtained by a fit of three-parameter King profiles to the observed density distributions of members. Results: We investigated all 871 objects in the 2nd Galactic quadrant, of which we successfully treated 642 open clusters, 2 globular clusters, and 8 stellar associations. The remaining 219 objects (24%) were recognised by us to be nonexistent clusters, duplicate entries, or clusters too faint for 2MAst. We found that our sample is complete in the 2nd quadrant up to a distance of 2 kpc, where the average surface density is 94 clusters per kpc$^{2}$. Compared with literature values we found good agreement in spatial and kinematic data, as well as for optical distances and reddening. On the basis of the PPMXL catalogue we perform an all-sky census of the Hyades down to masses of about 0.2 m_sun in a region up to 30 pc from the cluster centre. We use the proper motions from PPMXL in the convergent point method to determine probable kinematic members. From 2MASS photometry and CMC14 r'-band photometry, we derive empirical colour-absolute magnitude diagrams and, finally, determine photometric membership for all kinematic candidates. This is the first deep (r' < 17) all-sky survey of the Hyades allowing a full three-dimensional analysis of the cluster. The survey is complete down to at least M_{K_s} = 7.3 or 0.25 m_sun. We find 724 stellar systems co-moving with the bulk Hyades space velocity, which represent a total mass of 435 m_sun. The tidal radius is about 9 pc, and 275 m_sun (364 systems) are gravitationally bound. This is the cluster proper. Its mass density profile is perfectly fitted by a Plummer model with a central density of 2.21 m_sun*pc^-3 and a core radius of r_co = 3.10 pc, while the half-mass radius is r_h = 4.1 pc. There are another 100 m_sun in a volume between one and two tidal radii (halo), and another 60 m_sun up to a distance of 30 pc from the centre. Strong mass segregation is inherent in the cluster. The present-day luminosity and mass functions are noticeably different in various parts of the cluster (core, corona, halo, and co-movers). They are strongly evolved compared to presently favoured initial mass functions. The analysis of the velocity dispersion of the cluster shows that about 20% of its members must be binaries. As a by-product, we find that presently available theoretical isochrones are not able to adequately describe the near-infrared colour-absolute magnitude relation for those cluster stars that are less massive than about 0.6 m_sun., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We report the discovery of a bow shock around the high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) 4U 1907+09 using the Spitzer Space Telescope 24 $\mu$m data (after Vela X-1 the second example of bow shocks associated with HMXBs). The detection of the bow shock implies that 4U 1907+09 is moving through the space with a high (supersonic) peculiar velocity. To confirm the runaway nature of 4U 1907+09, we measured its proper motion, which for an adopted distance to the system of 4 kpc corresponds to a peculiar transverse velocity of $\simeq 160 \pm 115$ km/s, meaning that 4U 1907+09 is indeed a runaway system and supporting the general belief that most of HMXBs possess high space velocities. The direction of motion of 4U 1907+09 inferred from the proper motion measurement is consistent with the orientation of the symmetry axis of the bow shock, and shows that the HMXB is running away from the Galactic plane. We also present the Spitzer images of the bow shock around Vela X-1 (a system similar to 4U 1907+09) and compare it with the bow shock generated by 4U 1907+09., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

(abridged) We found in previous studies that standard Simple Stellar Population (SSP) models are unable to describe or explain the colours of Galactic open clusters both in the visible and in the NIR spectral range. (...) We construct a numerical SSP-model, with an underlying Salpeter IMF, valid within an upper $m_u$ and lower $m_l$ stellar mass range, and with total masses $M_c=10^2...10^4\,m_\odot$ typical of open clusters. We assume that the mass loss from a cluster is provided by mass loss from evolved stars and by the dynamical evaporation of low-mass members due to two-body relaxation. The data for the latter process were scaled to the models from high-resolution N-body calculations. We also investigate how a change of the $m_l$-limit influences magnitudes and colours of clusters of a given mass and derive a necessary condition for a luminosity and colour flash. The discreteness of the IMF leads to bursts in magnitude and colour of model clusters at moments when red supergiants or giants appear and then die. The amplitude of the burst depends on the cluster mass and on the spectral range; it is strongly increased in the NIR compared to optical passbands. In the discrete case, variations of the parameter $m_l$ are able to substantially change the magnitude-age and $M/L$-age relations. For the colours, the lowering of $m_l$ considerably amplifies the discreteness effect. The influence of dynamical mass loss on colour and magnitude is weak, although it provides a change of the slopes of the considered relations, improving their agreement with observations. For the Galactic open clusters we determined luminosity and tidal mass independent of each other. The derived mass-to-luminosity ratio shows, on average, an increase with cluster age in the optical, but gradually declines with age in the NIR. (...) We search for an explanation of the disagreement between the observed integrated colours of 650 local Galactic clusters and the theoretical colours of present-day SSP models. We check the hypothesis that the systematic offsets between observed and theoretical colours, which are $(B$$-$$V)\approx 0.3$ and $(J$$-$$K_s)\approx 0.8$, are caused by neglecting the discrete nature of the underlying mass function. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we construct artificial clusters of coeval stars taken from a mass distribution defined by an Salpeter initial mass function (IMF) and compare them with corresponding "continuous-IMF" SSP models. If the discreteness of the IMF is taken into account, the model fits the observations perfectly and is able to explain naturally a number of red "outliers" observed in the empirical colour-age relation. We find that the \textit{systematic} offset between the continuous- and discrete-IMF colours reaches its maximum of about 0.5 in $(B$$-$$V)$ for a cluster mass $M_c=10^2 m_\odot$ at ages $\log t\approx 7$, and diminishes substantially but not completely to about one hundredth of a magnitude at $\log t >7.9$ at cluster masses $M_c> 10^5 m_\odot$. At younger ages, it is still present even in massive clusters, and for $M_c \leqslant 10^4 m_\odot$ it is larger than 0.1 mag in $(B$$-$$V)$. Only for very massive clusters ($M_c>10^6 m_\odot$) with ages $\log t< 7.5$ is the offset small (of the order of 0.04 mag) and smaller than the typical observational error of colours of extragalactic clusters., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters, revised version after language editing and with an additional reference to Cervino and Luridiana (2004)

(abridged) In this paper we derive observed and modelled shape parameters (apparent ellipticity and orientation of the ellipse) of 650 Galactic open clusters identified in the ASCC-2.5 catalogue. We provide the observed shape parameters of Galactic open clusters, computed with the help of a multi-component analysis. For the vast majority of clusters these parameters are determined for the first time. High resolution ("star by star") N-body simulations are carried out with the specially developed $\phi$GRAPE code providing models of clusters of different initial masses, Galactocentric distances and rotation velocities. The comparison of models and observations of about 150 clusters reveals ellipticities of observed clusters which are too low (0.2 vs. 0.3), and offers the basis to find the main reason for this discrepancy. The models predict that after $\approx 50$ Myr clusters reach an oblate shape with an axes ratio of $1.65:1.35:1$, and with the major axis tilted by an angle of $q_{XY} \approx 30^\circ$ with respect to the Galactocentric radius due to differential rotation of the Galaxy. Unbiased estimates of cluster shape parameters require reliable membership determination in large cluster areas up to 2-3 tidal radii where the density of cluster stars is considerably lower than the background. Although dynamically bound stars outside the tidal radius contribute insignificantly to the cluster mass, their distribution is essential for a correct determination of cluster shape parameters. In contrast, a restricted mass range of cluster stars does not play such a dramatic role, though deep surveys allow to identify more cluster members and, therefore, to increase the accuracy of the observed shape parameters., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We measured absolute trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions with respect to many background galaxies for a sample of ten ultracool subdwarfs. The observations were taken in the H-band with the OMEGA2000 camera at the 3.5m-telescope on Calar Alto, Spain during a time period of 3.5 years. For the first time, the reduction of the astrometric measurements was carried out directly with respect to background galaxies. We obtained absolute parallaxes with mean errors ranging between 1 and 3 mas. With six completely new parallaxes we more than doubled the number of benchmark ultracool (>sdM7) subdwarfs. Six stars in the M_{K_s} vs. J-K_s diagram fit perfectly to model subdwarf sequences from M7 to L4 with [M/H] between -1.0 and -1.5, whereas 4 are consistent with a moderately low metallicity ([M/H]=-0.5) from M7 to T6. All but one of our objects have large tangential velocities between 200 and 320 km/s typical of the Galactic halo population. Our results are in good agreement with recent independent measurements for three of our targets and confirm the previously measured parallax and absolute magnitude M_{K_s} of the nearest and coolest (T-type) subdwarf 2MASS 0937+29 with higher accuracy. Applying photometric catalogs to the study of the population of the Galaxy is obscured by the impossibility to map directly photometric colors into astrophysical parameters. Most of all-sky catalogs like ASCC or 2MASS are based upon broad-band photometric systems, and the use of broad photometric bands complicates the determination of the astrophysical parameters for individual stars. This paper presents an algorithm for determining stellar astrophysical parameters (effective temperature, gravity and metallicity) from broad-band photometry even in the presence of interstellar reddening. This method suits the combination of narrow bands as well. We applied the method of interval-cluster analysis to finding stellar astrophysical parameters based on the newest Kurucz models calibrated with the use of a compiled catalog of stellar parameters. Our new method of determining astrophysical parameters allows all possible solutions to be located in the effective temperature-gravity-metallicity space for the star and selection of the most probable solution., Comment: 14 pages, 20 figures, accepted by A&A

(... abridged) The observed luminosity function can be constructed in a range of absolute integrated magnitudes $I_{M_V}= [-10, -0.5]$ mag, i.e. about 5 magnitudes deeper than in the most nearby galaxies. It increases linearly from the brightest limit to a turnover at about $I_{M_V}\approx-2.5$. The slope of this linear portion is $a=0.41\pm0.01$, which agrees perfectly with the slope deduced for star cluster observations in nearby galaxies. (...) We find that the initial mass function of open clusters (CIMF) has a two-segment structure with the slopes $\alpha=1.66\pm0.14$ in the range $\log M_c/M_\odot=3.37...4.93$ and $\alpha=0.82\pm0.14$ in the range $\log M_c/M_\odot=1.7...3.37$. The average mass of open clusters at birth is $4.5\cdot 10^3 M_\odot$, which should be compared to the average observed mass of about $700 M_\odot$. The average cluster formation rate derived from the comparison of initial and observed mass functions is $\bar{\upsilon}=0.4 \mathrm{kpc}^{-2}\mathrm{Myr}^{-1}$. Multiplying by the age of the Galactic disc (T = 13 Gyr) the predicted surface density of Galactic disc field stars originating from dissolved open clusters amounts to $22 M_\odot \mathrm{pc}^{-2}$ which is about 40% of the total surface density of the Galactic disc in the solar neighbourhood. Aims: We build a catalogue PPM-Extended (PPMX) on the ICRS system which is complete down to a well-defined limiting magnitude and contains the best presently available proper motions to be suited for kinematical studies in the Galaxy. Methods: We perform a rigorous weighted least-squares adjustment of individual observations, spread over more than a century, to determine mean positions and proper motions. The stellar content of PPMX is taken from GSC 1.2 supplemented by catalogues like ARIHIP, PPM and Tycho-2 at the bright end. All observations have been weighted according to their individual accuracy. The catalogue has been screened towards rejecting false entries in the various source catalogues. Results: PPM-Extended (PPMX) is a catalogue of 18,088,920 stars containing astrometric and photometric information. Its limiting magnitude is about 15.2 in the GSC photometric system. PPMX consists of three parts: a) a survey complete down to R_U = 12.8 in the magnitude system of UCAC2; b) additional stars of high-precision proper motions, and c) all other stars from GSC 1.2 identified in 2MASS. The typical accuracy of the proper motions is 2mas/y for 66 percent of the survey stars (a) and the high-precision stars (b), and about 10 mas/y for all other stars. Aims: We try to identify the origins of field O-stars in the nearest 2 to 3 kpc around the Sun using the best presently available kinematic data on O-stars and on young open clusters. We investigate the question if the present-day data are consistent with the assumption that O-stars have formed in groups (clusters, associations), or in isolation. Methods: We apply the epicycle theory for back-tracing the orbits of O-type stars and of candidate parent open clusters. Results: From the 370 O-stars in the ``Galactic O star catalog v 2.0'' (GOSV2) we have investigated 93 stars classified as "field", and found the origin for 73 of them in 48 open clusters younger than 30 Myrs. Only for 32 stars or about 9% of all O-stars from this catalogue, the question of their origin in groups is not solved; some of them may have originated in isolation or may have disintegrated the group in which they formed. Fifty percent of the young open clusters (age < 30 Myr) in the ``Catalogue of Open Cluster Data'' (COCD) have O-stars as members, or have ejected at least one O-star in the first 10 Myrs of their life, or both. During this period the average mass loss from open clusters by ejecting O-stars is found to be 3 to 5 M_Sun per Myr. We prove that zeta Pup had its origin in the open cluster Trumpler 10 which it left about 2.5 Myrs ago, and that its present-day distance is 300 pc (compared to 440 pc before). The revised distance implies a significant revision of the stellar parameters (a radius of 14 R_Sun, a mass of 22.5 M_Sun, and a luminosity of log L/L_Sun of 5.74) i.e, zeta Pup is closer, less massive, and less luminous than previously thought. We present the second data release of the Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE), an ambitious spectroscopic survey to measure radial velocities (RVs) and stellar atmosphere parameters of up to one million stars using the 6dF multi-object spectrograph on the 1.2-m UK Schmidt Telescope of the Anglo-Australian Observatory (AAO). It is obtaining medium resolution spectra (median R=7,500) in the Ca-triplet region (8,410--8,795 \AA) for southern hemisphere stars in the magnitude range 9

We present the 2nd version of the Catalogue of Radial Velocities with Astrometric Data (CRVAD-2). This is the result of the cross-identification of stars from the All-Sky Compiled Catalogue of 2.5 Million Stars (ASCC-2.5) with the General Catalogue of Radial Velocities and with other recently published radial velocity lists and catalogues. The CRVAD-2 includes accurate J2000 equatorial coordinates, proper motions and trigonometric parallaxes in the Hipparcos system, $B, V$ photometry in the Johnson system, spectral types, radial velocities (RVs), multiplicity and variability flags for 54907 ASCC-2.5 stars. We have used the CRVAD-2 for a new determination of mean RVs of 363 open clusters and stellar associations considering their established members from proper motions and photometry in the ASCC-2.5. For 330 clusters and associations we compiled previously published mean RVs from the literature, critically reviewed and partly revised them. The resulting Catalogue of Radial Velocities of Open Clusters and Associations (CRVOCA) contains about 460 open clusters and about 60 stellar associations in the Solar neighbourhood. These numbers still represent less than 30% of the total number of about 1820 objects currently known in the Galaxy. Aims: In this paper we derive tidal radii and masses of open clusters in the nearest kiloparsecs around the Sun. Methods: For each cluster, the mass is estimated from tidal radii determined from a fitting of three-parametric King's profiles to the observed integrated density distribution. Different samples of members are investigated. Results: For 236 open clusters, all contained in the catalogue ASCC-2.5, we obtain core and tidal radii, as well as tidal masses. The distributions of the core and tidal radii peak at about 1.5 pc and 7 - 10 pc, respectively. A typical relative error of the core radius lies between 15% and 50%, whereas, for the majority of clusters, the tidal radius was determined with a relative accuracy better than 20%. Most of the clusters have tidal masses between 50 and 1000 $m_\odot$, and for about half of the clusters, the masses were obtained with a relative error better than 50%., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Aims: Based on our well-determined sample of open clusters in the all-sky catalogue ASCC-2.5 we derive new linear sizes of some 600 clusters, and investigate the effect of mass segregation of stars in open clusters. Methods: Using statistical methods, we study the distribution of linear sizes as a function of spatial position and cluster age. We also examine statistically the distribution of stars of different masses within clusters as a function of the cluster age. Results: No significant dependence of the cluster size on location in the Galaxy is detected for younger clusters (< 200 Myr), whereas older clusters inside the solar orbit turned out to be, on average, smaller than outside. Also, small old clusters are preferentially found close to the Galactic plane, whereas larger ones more frequently live farther away from the plane and at larger Galactocentric distances. For clusters with (V - M_V) < 10.5, a clear dependence of the apparent radius on age has been detected: the cluster radii decrease by a factor of about 2 from an age of 10 Myr to an age of 1 Gyr. A detailed analysis shows that this observed effect can be explained by mass segregation and does not necessarily reflect a real decrease of cluster radii. We found evidence for the latter for the majority of clusters older than 30 Myr. Among the youngest clusters (between 5 and 30 Myr), there are some clusters with a significant grade of mass segregation, whereas some others show no segregation at all. At a cluster age between 50 and 100 Myrs, the distribution of stars of different masses becomes more regular over cluster area. We present results of a study of the galactic open cluster population based on the all-sky catalogue ASCC-2.5 (I/280A) compiled from Tycho-2, Hipparcos and other catalogues. The sample of optical clusters from ASCC-2.5 is complete up to about 850 pc from the Sun. The symmetry plane of the clusters' distribution is determined to be at $Z_0=-22\pm4$ pc, and the scale height of open clusters is only $56\pm3$ pc. The total surface density and volume density in the symmetry plane are $\Sigma=$ 114 kpc$^{-2}$ and $D(Z_0)=1015$ kpc$^{-3}$, respectively. We find the total number of open clusters in the Galactic disk to be of order of 10$^5$ at present. Fluctuations in the spatial and velocity distributions are attributed to the existence of four open cluster complexes (OCCs) of different ages containing up to a few tens of clusters. Members in an OCC show the same kinematic behaviour, and a narrow age spread. We find, that the youngest cluster complex, OCC~1 ($\log t<7.9$), with 19 deg inclination to the Galactic plane, is apparently a signature of Gould's Belt. The most abundant OCC~2 complex has moderate age ($\log t\approx8.45$). The clusters of the Perseus-Auriga group, having the same age as OCC~2, but different kinematics are seen in breaks between Perseus-Auriga clouds. The oldest ($\log t\approx8.85$) and sparsest group was identified due to a large motion in the Galactic anticentre direction. Formation rate and lifetime of open clusters are found to be $0.23\pm0.03$ kpc$^{-2}$Myr$^{-1}$ and 322$\pm$31 Myr, respectively. This implies a total number of cluster generations in the history of the Galaxy between 30 to 40. We present a list of 130 Galactic Open Clusters, found in the All-Sky Compiled Catalogue of 2.5 Million Stars (ASCC-2.5). For these clusters we determined and publish a homogeneous set of astrophysical parameters such as size, membership, motion, distance and age. In a previous work 520 already known open clusters out of the sample of 1700 clusters from the literature were confirmed in the ASCC-2.5 using independent, objective methods. Using these methods the whole sky was systematically screened for the search of new clusters. The newly detected clusters show the same distribution over the sky as the known ones. It is found, that without the {\em a-priori} knowledge about existing clusters our search lead to clusters which are, {\em on average}, brighter, have more members and cover larger angular radii than the 520 previously known ones., Comment: Fig.2 and Fig.3 available as 1013_ASCC_13.jpg and ncomp.jpg, respectively. In fact, during this search of new clusters in the catalogue ASCC-2.5, we discovered 130 clusters. It turned out that 21 of them are listed in the online list DLAM as private communications. We present a catalogue of astrophysical data of 520 Galactic open clusters. These are the clusters, for which at least three most probable members (18 on average) could be identified in the ASCC-2.5, a catalogue of stars based on the Tycho-2 observations from the Hipparcos mission. We applied homogeneous methods and algorithms to determine angular sizes of cluster cores and coronae, heliocentric distances, mean proper motions, mean radial velocities and ages. For the first time we derive distances for 200 clusters, radial velocities for 94 clusters and determine ages of 196 clusters. This homogeneous new parameter set is compared with earlier determinations. GAIA is a short-listed candidate for the ESA Cornerstone mission C5, meeting the ESA Survey Committee requirement for an observatory mission, dedicated to astrometry, providing 10 micro-arcsecond accuracy at 15th magnitude. The GAIA mission concept follows the dramatic success of the ESA HIPPARCOS mission, utilising a continuously scanning spacecraft, accurately measuring 1-D coordinates along great circles, in (at least) two simultaneous fields of view, separated by a known angle. These 1-D relative coordinates are later converted to the five astrometric parameters of position and motions in a global analysis. GAIA will provide precise astrometry and multi-colour photometry for all the one billion stars, quasars, and compact galaxies to I=20 on the sky. GAIA will additionally provide the sixth phase-space parameter, radial velocity, from a slitless spectroscopic survey of most stars brighter than about magnitude 17. The technical challenges are considerable, but achievable. The scientific returns are spectacular, with greatest impact in the study of stellar populations and dynamical structure of the galaxies of our Local Group, and in providing the first complete census of the stars and massive planets in the Solar neighbourhood. We present proper motions of 72 T Tauri stars located in the central region of Taurus-Auriga. These proper motions are taken from a new proper motion catalogue called STARNET. Our sample comprises 17 classical T Tauri stars and 55 weak-line T Tauri stars, most of the latter discovered by ROSAT. 53 stars had no proper motion measurement before. Kinematically, 62 of these stars are members of the association. A velocity dispersion of less than 2-3 km/s is found which is dominated by the errors of the proper motions. This velocity dispersion correlates with a spread in distances. Furthermore we present proper motions of 58 stars located in a region just south of the Taurus molecular clouds and compare the kinematics of the youngest stars in this sample (younger than 3.5 10^7 yrs) with the kinematics of the pre-main sequence stars in the Taurus-Auriga association. From a comparison of the space velocities we find that the stars in the central region of Tau-Aur are kinematically different from the stars in the southern part. We present rotation curves of the Galaxy based on the space-velocities of 197 OB stars and 144 classical cepheids, respectively, which range over a galactocentric distance interval of about 6 to 12 kpc. No significant differences between these rotation curves and rotation curves based solely on radial velocities assuming circular rotation are found. We derive an angular velocity of the LSR of Omega_0 = 5.5 +/- 0.4 mas/a (OB stars) and Omega_0 = 5.4 +/- 0.5 mas/a (cepheids), which is in agreement with the IAU 1985 value of Omega_0 = 5.5 mas/a. If we correct for probable rotations of the FK5 system, the corresponding angular velocities are Omega_0 = 6.0 mas/a (OB stars) and Omega_0 = 6.2 mas/a (cepheids).
