We present the validation of a radiochemical procedure for the determination of 55Fe and 63Ni in water and steel samples from nuclear decommissioning activities. The in-house validation was an essential requirement of the accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025. A combination of co-precipitation, anion chromatography and extraction chromatography steps was used for separating and purifying both radionuclides. The activities were measured by liquid scintillation counting. Due to the lack of reference materials, the method was validated by analysing simulated samples and by the standard addition technique. The parameters precision/accuracy, repeatability/linearity, selectivity/specificity, decision threshold, detection limit and uncertainty of the method were evaluated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: 241Pu was determined in slurry samples from a nuclear reactor decommissioning project at the Paul Scherrer Institute (Switzerland). To validate the results, the 241Pu activities of five samples were determined by LSC (TriCarb and Quantulus) and ICP-MS, with each instrument at a different laboratory. In lack of certified reference materials for 241Pu, the methods were further validated using the 241Pu information values of two reference sediments (IAEA-300 and IAEA-384). Excellent agreement with the results was found between LSC and ICP-MS in the nuclear waste slurries and the reference sediments. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

LiDAR-derived digital elevation models can reveal road networks located beneath dense forest canopy. This study tests the accuracy of forest road characteristics mapped using LiDAR in the Santa Cruz Mountains, CA. The position, gradient, and total length of a forest haul road were accurately extracted using a 1 m DEM. In comparison to a field-surveyed centerline, the LiDAR-derived road exhibited a positional accuracy of 1.5 m, road grade measurements within 0.53% mean absolute difference, and total road length within 0.2% of the field-surveyed length. Airborne LiDAR can provide thorough and accurate road inventory data to support forest management and watershed assessment activities.

We present a study case where the theory of sampling (TOS) is used to make defensible inferences in a nuclear forensic investigation. The forensic investigations focused on five suspicious radioactive materials seized in 2019. All errors introduced by sampling and sub-sampling the radioactive materials are evaluated according to TOS. A maximum sampling error of 35% was tolerated. The uses of TOS enabled the forensic team to make inferences about the seized materials and therefore make confidence-based statements about the exceeding of limits established in the Swiss Radiological Protection Ordinance for radioactive substances. Here, we report on new data (75 analyses) of plutonium (Pu) isotopes to elucidate activity concentrations, inventories, sources, and their transport from the ocean surface to the seafloor from a collection of six deep-sea sediment cores (depths ranging from 257 to 3739 m) in the southern Gulf of Mexico. Sediment cores collected from the continental shelf and upper slope region of the Gulf of Mexico showed 240 Pu/ 239 Pu ratios of 0.15 to 0.26, and 239+240 Pu-inventories ranging from 14.7 to 33.0 Bq m -2 . Inventories and ratios are consistent with global fallout Pu for this tropical region. In contrast, sediment cores collected from the lower slope region and abyssal plain showed low 240 Pu/ 239 Pu ratios of 0.07 to 0.13 and much lower 239+240 Pu inventories below 6.8 Bq m -2 . This implies that only a small fraction of the expected global fallout Pu has reached the deep-sea sediments. The low 240 Pu/ 239 Pu isotope ratios indicate that fallout from the Nevada testing site was an important source of Pu in deep-sea sediments, and that this Pu was likely more efficiently scavenged from the water column than Pu from global fallout. We estimated that up to 44% of the total inventory of 239+240 Pu in deep-sea sediments is due to the Nevada source. Low values and a progressive decrease of 240 Pu/ 239 Pu ratios and 239+240 Pu inventories with increasing water depth have been previously reported for the Gulf of Mexico. Analysis of Pu isotopes in two sediment traps from the upper slope regions shows 240 Pu/ 239 Pu ratios comparable to those observed in global fallout. These results indicate that global fallout Pu is currently the main source of Pu in sinking particles in the water column. Therefore, a significant fraction of global fallout Pu must still be present, either in a dissolved phase, or as biologically recycled material in the water column, or scavenged on the shelf and shelf break. Our results bring to light important questions on the application of Pu isotopes to establish sediment chronologies in deep-sea sediments, since global fallout features such as the 1963 maximum are not available., (© 2022. The Aare river system in Switzerland, with two nuclear power plants on the banks of the river, and its intermediate lakes and reservoirs, provides a unique opportunity to analyze the contribution of different sources to the radioactive contamination. Sediment cores were collected from two lakes and a reservoir, all connected by the river Aare. In order to study the influence of the Chernobyl accident, one sediment core was collected from a lake in the southern part of Switzerland. The sediment cores were sliced and analyzed with gamma ray spectrometry. Plutonium, americium, and uranium were extracted radiochemically, and their concentrations were measured with a sector field ICP-MS. The uranium isotope ratios were further measured with a multi collector ICP-MS. The maximum 137 Cs activity from the Chernobyl accident and the Pu and 137 Cs activities associated to the 1963 global fallout maximum were well identified in sediments from all three lakes. High-resolution records of plutonium isotopes in the zone of the sediments corresponding to the period of maximum fallout from the atmospheric nuclear weapon testing showed distinct fingerprints, depending on the different test activities. Pu isotope ratios could be used to detect non-global fallout plutonium. The ratio 241 Am/ 241 Pu was used to determine the age of the plutonium. Despite of very low 241 Pu and 241 Am concentrations, the calculated plutonium production dates seemed to be reasonable for the sediment layers corresponding to the NWT tests. The calculated production date of the plutonium in the upper most 15 cm of the sediment core seemed to be younger. The reason for this could be additional non-global fallout plutonium. For the lake sediments, natural ratios for 235 U/ 238 U and enriched or depleted ratios for 234 U/ 238 U were measured, depending on the lake. The Bikar and Bokak Atolls, located in the northern Marshall Islands, are extremely isolated and consist of pristine marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Both atolls may have experienced significant radioactive deposition following the nuclear weapon testing conducted at Bikini and Enewetak proving grounds. Here we report activity concentrations of artificial radionuclides ( 239 Pu, 240 Pu, 241 Pu, 241 Am, 137 Cs and 90 Sr) in marine and terrestrial samples collected from Bikar and Bokak Atolls. Artificial radionuclides in soil from the Majuro Atoll are also reported and form a radiological baseline against which the levels at the other atolls can be compared. We observed low levels of artificial radionuclides in soil from Majuro and Bokak, but significantly higher levels in soil from Bikar. The residual radioactivity in the Bikar environment is comparable to the levels previously reported for other nearby atolls, including Taka and Utrik, but lower than for Rongerik, Rongelap, Bikini and Enewetak. An analysis of 240 Pu/ 239 Pu isotope ratios and estimations of the dates of contamination from 241 Am/ 241 Pu activity ratios both indicated that the Bikar Atoll was contaminated mainly by radioactive fallout from the Castle Bravo test in 1954. While we officially live in the Holocene epoch, global warming and many other impacts of global change have led to the proposal and wide adoption of the Anthropocene to define the present geological epoch. The Anthropocene Working Group (AWG) established that it should be treated as a formal stratigraphic unit, demonstrated by a reference level commonly known as "golden spike", still under discussion. Here we show that the onset of bomb-derived plutonium recorded in two banded massive corals from the Caribbean Sea is consistent (1955-1956 CE), so sites far from nuclear testing grounds are potentially suitable to host a type section of the Anthropocene. A radiochemical procedure for the determination of plutonium (Pu) and uranium (U) radionuclides in ice samples by multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (MC-ICP-MS) is presented. Pu and U radionuclides are preconcentrated by coprecipitation and then separated by extraction chromatography. The purified Pu and U fractions are analyzed by MC-ICP-MS. Detection limits of 2 × 10 -3 and 3 × 10 -6 mBq kg -1 were achieved for 239 Pu and 236 U, respectively. Surface ice samples collected from the Gauli glacier (Switzerland) were analyzed by this method. The surface of the Gauli Glacier retains historical records of 239 Pu, 240 Pu and 236 U from the nuclear weapon testing (NWT) period. Pu and U radionuclides were found to be consistent in terms of pattern, showing two peaks possibly related to the two main periods of the NWTs (1954-1958 and 1961-1963). ³H measurements, also released by the NWT, further confirmed the Pu and U results. The 240 Pu/ 239 Pu ratio ranged from 0.14 to 0.25, and 236 U/ 239 Pu ranged from 0.14 to 0.81. The Pu atom ratios ranged within the limits of global fallout in the most intensive period of NWT (1952 to 1962).

Surface and groundwater resources in the Seridó Region (Brazilian semiarid) were investigated to evaluate their current quality conditions and suitability for domestic use. The water was characterized in terms of physical, chemical, and radiological parameters; including those required by the Brazilian Drinking Water Quality Standard (DWQS). Information about major and trace elements and radiological aspects of the water are reported for the first time. Salinization was confirmed as a key problem in the region, driven natural and anthropogenic. Overall, water has poor organoleptic characteristics. The concentration of most trace elements was below the recommended level, except for uranium and selenium in groundwater. Gross alpha and beta activities higher than the recommended levels were also recorded in several water samples, mostly from the investigated aquifers. In these samples, a detailed radionuclide analysis is required to estimate the effective dose received by the local population. Overall, the results show that water from the investigated region is not suitable for human consumption unless proper treatment is applied. Water requires proper treatment to decrease the content of dissolved salts, toxic elements, and radionuclides responsible for the high gross alpha and beta activities.

Discharges from the Krasnoyarsk Mining and Chemical Industrial Complex (KMCIC) near Krasnoyarsk resulted in radioactive contamination of sediments of the River Yenisei. Between 1999 and 2006, 16 sediment cores were collected at different positions 15-1500 km downstream from the discharge point. The concentration of artificial gamma-emitting radionuclides ((137)Cs, (60)Co, (152)Eu, and (241)Am) was determined with the objective to analyze the migration processes leading to the transport of these radionuclides along the river and to their vertical distribution within the sediment. In cores taken in the vicinity of the reactors, the average activity concentration of (137)Cs, (152)Eu, and (60)Co was about 1000 Bq kg(-1), and the activity concentration of (241)Am was about 20 Bq kg(-1). Contamination levels of artificial radionuclides were decreasing with increasing distance downstream the KMCIC: The fastest decrease of average activity by a factor of 10 over a distance of 300 km was observed for (241)Am, whereas for (137)Cs this decrease occurred over a distance of 1100 km. Sequential extraction experiments revealed that in all depths and at all distances the studied radionuclides were tightly bound to the sediment. This paper describes the behaviour of 137Cs in Lago Maggiore and other pre-alpine lakes as a consequence of atmospheric nuclear weapons testing fallout and the fallout from the nuclear accident in Chernobyl. It presents data on the 137Cs distribution in tributaries, lake water, bottom sediments and reveals the role of (137)Cs as a marker of the sedimentation processes. The run-off of 137Cs from the watershed to the lake is described with a simple compartment model. Measurements of the activity concentration of (137)Cs in sediments are compared with the output of a model (diffusion-convection type) which describes the input of 137Cs into and its vertical distribution within the sediment. Varying sedimentation rates (0.05-0.90g(cm2y)(-1)) in Lago Maggiore are compared with data of other authors. Sedimentation rates and total distribution coefficients (of about 10(5) Lkg(-1)) in Lago Maggiore are discussed and compared with those of Lago di Lugano, Lake Constance, and Lake Vorsee.

The ions normally formed by actinides in aqueous solutions by the oxidation states III-VI are M3-, M4+, MO2+ and MO2(+2), respectively. Oxidation state representatives such as Am3+, Th4+, NpO+ and UO+, which resist oxidation state changes, were used to investigate a method to separate the oxidised species (MO2 and MO2(2+)) from the reduced species (M3+ and M4+). With this method the hexavalent state of uranium could be separated from the tetravalent state of uranium in aqueous media in less than 8 min. Uranium concentrations down to 10(-9) M could be analysed without changing the redox composition during the separation. The oxidation kinetics of the tetravalent uranium for different hydrochloric acid concentrations was investigated. The measurements showed good agreement with values found in the literature, although the uranium concentrations were one million times lower.
