We determine the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction within and between two magnetic cobalt layers separated by a non-magnetic spacer through ab initio calculations. We investigate different materials for the non-magnetic layer, focusing on the experimentally realized Co/Ag/Co system. We laterally shift the atoms in the non-magnetic layer to achieve the symmetry breaking required for the interlayer Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We compare the resulting interactions with the L\'evy-Fert model and observe a good overall agreement between the model and the ab initio calculations for the dependence on the atomic positions. Additionally, we derive a formula for the strength of the interlayer isotropic exchange interaction depending on the position of the atoms in the non-magnetic layer and compare it to the first-principles results. We investigate the limitations of the L\'evy-Fert model by turning off the spin-orbit coupling separately on the non-magnetic and magnetic atoms and by studying the effect of band filling. Our work advances the understanding of the microscopic mechanisms of the interlayer Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and gives insight into possible new material combinations with strong interlayer Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction.

Inertial effects in spin dynamics emerge on picosecond time scales, giving rise to nutational excitations at THz frequencies. Here, we describe a general framework for investigating the precessional and nutational excitations in any type of spin structure within linear spin-wave theory. We consider the particular cases of planar and conical spin spirals in detail. We observe a change in the sign of the curvature of the high-frequency nutational spin-wave band as the spiral period is decreased when passing from the ferromagnetic to the antiferromagnetic limit. Although BiFeO$_3$ is one of the most studied multiferroic materials, recent magnetization and neutron scattering studies have revealed a new magnetic phase in this compound - the transverse conical phase. To study the collective spin excitations of this phase, we performed THz spectroscopy in magnetic fields up to 17 T at and above room temperature. We observed five spin-wave branches in the magnetic phase with long wavelength conical modulation. Using a numerical spin dynamics model we found two kinds of excitations with magnetic moments oscillating either along or perpendicular to the static fields. Remarkably, we detected strong directional dichroism, an optical manifestation of the magnetoelectric effect, for two spin-wave modes of the conical phase. According to our experiments, the stability of the conical state is sensitive to the magnetic field history and it can become (meta)stable at or close to zero magnetic field, which may allow exploiting its magnetoelectric properties at room temperature.

We performed metadynamics Monte Carlo simulations to obtain the free energy as a function of the topological charge in the skyrmion-hosting magnetic model systems (Pt$_{0.95}$Ir$_{0.05}$)/Fe/Pd(111) and Pd/Fe/Ir(111), using a spin model containing parameters based on ab initio calculations. Using the topological charge as collective variable, this method allows for evaluating the temperature dependence of the number of skyrmionic quasiparticles. In addition, from the free-energy cost of increasing and decreasing the topological charge of the system we determined chemical potentials as a function of the temperature. At lower temperature, the chemical potential for creating skyrmions and antiskyrmions from the topologically trivial state is different. This splitting of the chemical potential is particularly pronounced for large external magnetic fields when the system is in a field-polarized phase. We investigate squeezing of magnons in a conical spin spiral configuration. We find that while the energy of magnons propagating along the $\boldsymbol{k}$ and the $-\boldsymbol{k}$ directions can be different due to the non-reciprocal dispersion, these two modes are connected by the squeezing, hence can be described by the same squeezing parameter. The squeezing parameter diverges at the center of the Brillouin zone due to the translational Goldstone mode of the system, but the squeezing also vanishes for certain wave vectors. We discuss possible ways of detecting the squeezing.

The dynamics of magnetic moments consist of a precession around the magnetic field direction and a relaxation towards the field to minimize the energy. While the magnetic moment and the angular momentum are conventionally assumed to be parallel to each other, at ultrafast time scales their directions become separated due to inertial effects. The inertial dynamics give rise to additional high-frequency modes in the excitation spectrum of magnetic materials. Here, we review the recent theoretical and experimental advances in this emerging topic and discuss the open challenges and opportunities in the detection and the potential applications of inertial spin dynamics., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

The frame rates of most 3D LIDAR sensors used in intelligent vehicles are substantially lower than current cameras installed in the same vehicle. This research suggests using a mono camera to virtually enhance the frame rate of LIDARs, allowing the more frequent monitoring of dynamic objects in the surroundings that move quickly. As a first step, dynamic object candidates are identified and tracked in the camera frames. Following that, the LIDAR measurement points of these items are found by clustering in the frustums of 2D bounding boxes. Projecting these to the camera and tracking them to the next camera frame can be used to create 3D-2D correspondences between different timesteps. These correspondences between the last LIDAR frame and the actual camera frame are used to solve the PnP (Perspective-n-Point) problem. Finally, the estimated transformations are applied to the previously measured points to generate virtual measurements. With the proposed estimation, if the ego movement is known, not just static object position can be determined at timesteps where camera measurement is available, but positions of dynamic objects as well. We achieve state-of-the-art performance on large public datasets in terms of accuracy and similarity to real measurements.

Hematite is a canted antiferromagnetic insulator, promising for applications in spintronics. Here, we present ab initio calculations of the tensorial exchange interactions of hematite and use them to understand its magnetic properties by parameterizing a semiclassical Heisenberg spin model. Using atomistic spin dynamics simulations, we calculate the equilibrium properties and phase transitions of hematite, most notably the Morin transition. The computed isotropic and Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya interactions result in a N\'eel temperature and weak ferromagnetic canting angle that are in good agreement with experimental measurements. Our simulations show how dipole-dipole interactions act in a delicate balance with first and higher-order on-site anisotropies to determine the material's magnetic phase. Comparison with spin-Hall magnetoresistance measurements on a hematite single-crystal reveals deviations of the critical behavior at low temperatures. One-dimensional systems comprising s-wave superconductivity with meticulously tuned magnetism and spin-orbit coupling can realize topologically gapped superconductors hosting Majorana edge modes whose stability is determined by the gap's size. The ongoing quest for larger topological gaps evolved into a material science issue. However, for atomic spin chains on superconductor surfaces, the effect of the substrate's spin-orbit coupling on the system's topological gap size is largely unexplored. Here, we introduce an atomic layer of the heavy metal Au on Nb(110) which combines strong spin-orbit coupling and a large superconducting gap with a high crystallographic quality enabling the assembly of defect-free Fe chains using a scanning tunneling microscope tip. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy experiments and density functional theory calculations reveal ferromagnetic coupling and ungapped YSR bands in the chain despite of the heavy substrate. By artificially imposing a spin spiral state our calculations indicate a minigap opening and zero-energy edge state formation. The presented methodology paves the way towards a material screening of heavy metal layers on elemental superconductors for ideal systems hosting Majorana edge modes protected by large topological gaps.

The temperature dependence of mesoscopic spin-model parameters is derived in two-sublattice antiferromagnetically aligned systems based on Green's function theory. It is found that transversal spin correlations decrease the anisotropy terms while increasing the Heisenberg and Dzyaloshinsky--Moriya exchange interactions and the latter's contribution to the anisotropy. The obtained temperature dependences show quantitative agreement with the results for ferromagnets, and they also agree well with numerical atomistic simulations which treat the spin correlations without approximations. Edge states forming at the boundaries of topologically non-trivial phases of matter are promising candidates for future device applications because of their stability against local perturbations. Magnetically ordered spin chains proximitized by an s-wave superconductor are predicted to enter a topologically non-trivial mini-gapped phase with zero-energy Majorana modes (MMs) localized at their ends. However, the presence of non-topological end states mimicking MM properties can spoil their unambiguous observation. Here, we report on a method to experimentally decide on the MM nature of end states observed for the first time in antiferromagnetic spin chains. Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we find end states at either finite or near-zero energy in Mn chains on Nb(110) or Ta(110), respectively, within a large minigap. By introducing a locally perturbing defect on one end of the chain, the end state on this side splits off from zero-energy while the one on the other side doesn't - ruling out their MM origin. A minimal model shows that, while wide trivial minigaps hosting such conventional end states are easily achieved in antiferromagnetic spin chains, unrealistically large spin-orbit couplings are required to drive the system into the topologically nontrivial phase with MMs. The methodology of perturbing chains by local defects is a powerful tool to probe the stability of future candidate topological edge modes against local disorder.

The Mermin-Wagner theorem states that long-range magnetic order does not exist in one- or two-dimensional (2D) isotropic magnets with short-ranged interactions. The theorem has been a milestone in magnetism and has been driving the research of recently discovered 2D van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials from fundamentals up to potential applications. In such systems, the existence of magnetic ordering is typically attributed to the presence of a significant magnetic anisotropy, which is known to introduce a spin-wave gap and circumvent the core assumption of the theorem. Here we show that in finite-size 2D vdW magnets typically found in lab setups (e.g., within millimetres), short-range interactions can be large enough to allow the stabilisation of magnetic order at finite temperatures without any magnetic anisotropy for practical implementations. We demonstrate that magnetic ordering can be created in flakes of 2D materials independent of the lattice symmetry due to the intrinsic nature of the spin exchange interactions and finite-size effects in two-dimensions. Surprisingly we find that the crossover temperature, where the intrinsic magnetisation changes from superparamagnetic to a completely disordered paramagnetic regime, is weakly dependent on the system length, requiring giant sizes (e.g., of the order of the observable universe ~10$^{26}$ m) in order to observe the vanishing of the magnetic order at cryogenic temperatures as expected from the Mermin-Wagner theorem. Our findings indicate exchange interactions as the main driving force behind the stabilisation of short-range order in 2D magnetism and broaden the horizons of possibilities for exploration of compounds with low anisotropy at an atomically thin level.

Inertial effects in spin dynamics are theoretically predicted to emerge at ultrashort time scales, but their experimental signatures are often ambiguous. Here, we calculate the spin-wave spectrum in ferromagnets and two-sublattice antiferromagnets in the presence of inertial effects. It is shown how precession and nutation spin waves hybridize with each other, leading to the renormalization of the frequencies, the group velocities, the effective gyromagnetic ratios and the effective damping parameters. Possible ways of distinguishing between the signatures of inertial dynamics and similar effects explainable within conventional models are discussed., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

It was demonstrated recently that on ultrashort time scales magnetization dynamics does not only exhibit precession but also nutation. Here, we investigate how nutation can contribute to spin switching leading towards ultrafast data writing. We use analytic theory and atomistic spin simulations to discuss the behavior of ferromagnets and antiferromagnets in high-frequency magnetic fields. In ferromagnets, linearly polarized fields align the magnetization perpendicular to the external field, enabling $90^{\circ}$ switching. For circularly polarized fields in the $xy$ plane, the magnetization tilts to the $z$ direction. During this tilting, it rotates around the $z$ axis, allowing $180^{\circ}$ switching. In antiferromagnets, external fields with frequencies higher than the nutation frequency align the order parameter parallel to the field direction, while for lower frequencies it is oriented perpendicular to the field. The switching frequency increases with the magnetic field strength, and it deviates from the Larmor frequency, making it possible to outpace precessional switching in high magnetic fields., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

We report on the structural and magnetic properties of single and double atomic layers of Mn on a clean and unreconstructed Nb(110) substrate. Low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements reveal a proximity-induced superconducting state in the Mn thin films, which are found to grow pseudomorphically on the Nb surface. Spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy measurements reveal a c(2x2) antiferromagnetic order in the Mn layers, with an out-of-plane spin-orientation. First-principles density functional theory calculations confirm the experimentally observed magnetic state, which is understood as the consequence of a strong intra- and inter-layer nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange coupling. We present results for the electronic and magnetic structure of Mn and Fe clusters on Nb(110) surface, focusing on building blocks of atomic chains as possible realizations of topological superconductivity. The magnetic ground states of the atomic dimers and most of the monatomic chains are determined by the nearest-neighbor isotropic interaction. The dependence on the crystallographic direction as well as on the atomic coordination number is analyzed via an orbital decomposition of this isotropic interaction based on the spin-cluster expansion and the difference in the local density of states between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic configurations. A spin-spiral ground state is obtained for Fe chains along the [$1\overline{1}0$] direction as a consequence of the frustration of the isotropic interactions. Here, a flat spin-spiral dispersion relation is identified, which can stabilize spin spirals with various wave vectors together with the magnetic anisotropy. This may lead to the observation of spin spirals of different wave vectors and chiralities in longer chains instead of a unique ground state., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables

Vortices in topological superconductors are predicted to host Majorana bound states (MBSs) as exotic quasiparticles. In recent experiments, the spatially non-split zero-energy vortex bound state in topological superconductors has been regarded as an essential spectroscopic signature for the observation of MBSs. Here, we report the observation of anisotropic non-split zero-energy vortex bound states in a conventional elemental superconductor with a topologically trivial band structure using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. The experimental results, corroborated by quasi-classical theoretical calculations, indicate that the non-split states directly reflect the quasiparticle trajectories governed by the surface electronic structure. Our study implies that non-split zero-energy states are not a conclusive signature of MBSs in vortex cores, stimulating a revision of the current understanding of such states.

The free energy and the entropy of magnetic skyrmions with respect to the collinear state are calculated for a (Pt$_{0.95}$Ir$_{0.05}$)/Fe bilayer on Pd(111) via atomistic spin model simulations. The simulations are carried out starting from very low temperatures where the skyrmion number is conserved up to the range where skyrmions are constantly created and destroyed by thermal fluctuations, highlighting their quasiparticle nature. The higher entropy of the skyrmions at low temperature leads to a reduced free energy, such that the skyrmions become energetically preferred over the collinear state due to entropic stabilization as predicted by linear spin-wave theory. Going beyond the linear spin-wave approximation, a sign change is shown to occur in the free energy as well as the entropy at elevated temperature., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

The effect of inertial spin dynamics is compared between ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic systems. The linear response to an oscillating external magnetic field is calculated within the framework of the inertial Landau--Lifshitz--Gilbert equation using analytical theory and computer simulations. Precession and nutation resonance peaks are identified, and it is demonstrated that the precession frequencies are reduced by the spin inertia, while the lifetime of the excitations is enhanced. The interplay between precession and nutation is found to be the most prominent in antiferromagnets, where the timescale of the exchange-driven sublattice dynamics is comparable to inertial relaxation times. Consequently, antiferromagnetic resonance techniques should be better suited for the search for intrinsical inertial spin dynamics on ultrafast timescales than ferromagnetic resonance., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Magnetic atoms coupled to the Cooper pairs of a superconductor induce Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states (in short Shiba states). In the presence of sufficiently strong spin-orbit coupling, the bands formed by hybridization of the Shiba states in ensembles of such atoms can support low-dimensional topological superconductivity with Majorana bound states localized on the ensembles' edges. Yet, the role of spin-orbit coupling for the hybridization of Shiba states in dimers of magnetic atoms, the building blocks for such systems, is largely unexplored. Here, we reveal the evolution of hybridized multi-orbital Shiba states from a single Mn adatom to artificially constructed ferromagnetically and antiferromagnetically coupled Mn dimers placed on a Nb(110) surface. Upon dimer formation, the atomic Shiba orbitals split for both types of magnetic alignment. Our theoretical calculations attribute the unexpected splitting in antiferromagnetic dimers to spin-orbit coupling and broken inversion symmetry at the surface. Equilibrium properties and localised magnon excitations are investigated in topologically distinct skyrmionic textures. The observed shape of the structures and their orientation on the lattice is explained based on their vorticities and the symmetry of the crystal. The transformation between different textures and their annihilation as a function of magnetic field is understood based on the energy differences between them. The angular momentum spin-wave eigenmodes characteristic of cylindrically symmetric structures are combined in the distorted spin configurations, leading to avoided crossings in the magnon spectrum. The susceptibility of the skyrmionic textures to homogeneous external fields is calculated, revealing that a high number of modes become detectable due to the hybridization between the angular momentum eigenmodes. These findings should contribute to the observation of spin waves in distorted skyrmionic structures via experiments and numerical simulations, widening the range of their possible applications in magnonic devices., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

Controlling the preferred direction of the magnetic moments is essential for the design of spintronic devices based on ultrathin films and heterostructures. As the film thickness or the temperature is increased, the easy anisotropy axis is typically reoriented from an out-of-plane direction preferred by surface and interface energy contributions to an in-plane alignment favored by the volume anisotropy terms. We study the temperature-driven spin reorientation transition in two atomic layers of Fe on W(110) using well-tempered metadynamics simulations based on a spin model parametrized by ab initio calculations and find that the transition only takes place in the presence of the Dzyaloshinsky--Moriya interaction (DMI). This demonstrates that the chiral DMI does not only differentiate between noncollinear spin structures of different rotational senses, but it also influences the magnetic orientation of collinear magnetic configurations., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Quantum mechanical systems with long-range interactions between quasiparticles provide a promising platform for coherent quantum information technology. Superconductors are a natural choice for solid-state based quantum devices, while magnetic impurities inside superconductors give rise to quasiparticle excitations of broken Cooper pairs that provide characteristic information about the host superconductor. Here, we reveal that magnetic impurities embedded below a superconducting La(0001) surface interact via quasiparticles extending to very large distances, up to several tens of nanometers. Using low-temperature scanning probe techniques, we observe the corresponding anisotropic and giant oscillations in the local density of states. Theoretical calculations indicate that the quasi-two-dimensional surface states with their strongly anisotropic Fermi surface play a crucial role for the focusing and long-range extension of the magnetic bound states. The quasiparticle focusing mechanism should facilitate the design of versatile magnetic structures with tunable and directed magnetic interactions over large distances, thereby paving the way toward the design of low-dimensional magnet-superconductor hybrid systems exhibiting topologically non-trivial quantum states as possible elements of quantum computation schemes based on Majorana quasiparticles., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

High-resolution tunneling electron spin transport properties (longitudinal spin current (LSC) and spin transfer torque (STT) maps) of topologically distinct real-space magnetic skyrmionic textures are reported by employing a 3D-WKB combined scalar charge and vector spin transport theory in the framework of spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SP-STM). For our theoretical investigation metastable skyrmionic spin structures with various topological charges ($Q=-3,-2,-1,0,1,2$) in the (Pt$_{0.95}$Ir$_{0.05}$)/Fe/Pd(111) ultrathin magnetic film are considered. Using an out-of-plane magnetized SP-STM tip it is found that the maps of the LSC vectors acting on the spins of the magnetic textures and all STT vector components exhibit the same topology as the skyrmionic objects. In contrast, an in-plane magnetized tip generally does not result in spin transport vector maps that are topologically equivalent to the underlying spin structure, except for the LSC vectors acting on the spins of the skyrmionic textures at a specific relation between the spin polarizations of the sample and the tip. The magnitudes of the spin transport vector quantities exhibit close relations to charge current SP-STM images irrespectively of the skyrmionic topologies. Moreover, we find that the STT efficiency (torque/current ratio) acting on the spins of the skyrmions can reach large values up to $\sim$25 meV/$\mu$A ($\sim$0.97 $h/e$) above the rim of the magnetic objects, but it considerably varies between large and small values depending on the lateral position of the SP-STM tip above the topological spin textures. A simple expression for the STT efficiency is introduced to explain its variation. Regarding image forensics, researchers have proposed various approaches to detect and/or localize manipulations, such as splices. Recent best performing image-forensics algorithms greatly benefit from the application of deep learning, but such tools can be vulnerable to adversarial attacks. Due to the fact that most of the proposed adversarial example generation techniques can be used only on end-to-end classifiers, the adversarial robustness of image-forensics methods that utilize deep learning only for feature extraction has not been studied yet. Using a novel algorithm capable of directly adjusting the underlying representations of patches we demonstrate on three non end-to-end deep learning-based splice localization tools that hiding manipulations of images is feasible via adversarial attacks. While the tested image-forensics methods, EXIF-SC, SpliceRadar, and Noiseprint, rely on feature extractors that were trained on different surrogate tasks, we find that the formed adversarial perturbations can be transferable among them regarding the deterioration of their localization performance., Comment: This is a pre-print of the original paper accepted at the CVPR Workshop on Media Forensics 2020

Magnetic anisotropy plays an essential role in information technology applications of magnetic materials, providing a means to retain the long-term stability of a magnetic state in the presence of thermal fluctuations. Anisotropy consists of a single-ion contribution stemming from the crystal structure and two-ion terms attributed to the exchange interactions between magnetic atoms. A lack of robust theory crucially limits the understanding of the temperature dependence of the anisotropy in pure two-ion and mixed single-ion and two-ion systems. Here, we use Green's function theory and atomistic Monte Carlo simulations to determine the temperature scaling of the effective anisotropy in ferromagnets in these pure and mixed cases, from saturated to vanishing magnetization. At low temperature, we find that the pure two-ion anisotropy scales with the reduced magnetization as $k(m) \sim m^{2.28}$, while the mixed scenario describes the diversity of the temperature dependence of the anisotropy observed in real materials. Adversarial examples contain small perturbations that can remain imperceptible to human observers but alter the behavior of even the best performing deep learning models and yield incorrect outputs. Since their discovery, adversarial examples have drawn significant attention in machine learning: researchers try to reveal the reasons for their existence and improve the robustness of machine learning models to adversarial perturbations. The state-of-the-art defense is the computationally expensive and very time consuming adversarial training via projected gradient descent (PGD). We hypothesize that adversarial attacks exploit the open space risk of classic monotonic activation functions. This paper introduces the tent activation function with bounded open space risk and shows that tents make deep learning models more robust to adversarial attacks. We demonstrate on the MNIST dataset that a classifier with tents yields an average accuracy of 91.8% against six white-box adversarial attacks, which is more than 15 percentage points above the state of the art. On the CIFAR-10 dataset, our approach improves the average accuracy against the six white-box adversarial attacks to 73.5% from 41.8% achieved by adversarial training via PGD.

Ensembles of magnetic skyrmions in confined geometries are shown to exhibit thermally driven motion on two different time scales. The intrinsic fluctuating dynamics ($t\sim 1~$ps) is governed by short-range symmetric and antisymmetric exchange interactions, whereas the long-time limit ($t\gtrsim10\,$ns) is determined by the coaction of skyrmion-skyrmion-repulsion and the system's geometry. Micromagnetic simulations for realistic island shapes and sizes are performed and analyzed, indicating the special importance of skyrmion dynamics at finite temperatures. We demonstrate how the competition between skyrmion mobility and observation time directly affects the addressability of skyrmionic bits, which is a key challenge on the path of developing skyrmion-based room-temperature applications. Magnetic atoms on heavy-element superconducting substrates are potential building blocks for realizing topological superconductivity in one- and two-dimensional atomic arrays. Their localized magnetic moments induce so-called Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states inside the energy gap of the substrate. In the dilute limit, where the electronic states of the array atoms are only weakly coupled, proximity of the YSR states to the Fermi energy is essential for the formation of topological superconductivity in the band of YSR states. Here, we reveal via scanning tunnel spectroscopy and ab initio calculations of a series of 3d transition metal atoms (Mn, Fe, Co) adsorbed on the heavy-element superconductor Re that the increase of the Kondo coupling and sign change in magnetic anisotropy with d-state filling is accompanied by a shift of the YSR states through the energy gap of the substrate and a crossing of the Fermi level. The uncovered systematic trends enable the identification of the most promising candidates for the realization of topological superconductivity in arrays of similar systems.

We present results of first-principles calculations of the magnetic properties of Fe chains deposited on the Re(0001) surface. By increasing the length of the chain, a transition is found from an almost collinear antiferromagnetic state for a 5-atom-long chain to a spin spiral state with the rotational plane slightly tilted from the surface of the substrate for the 15-atom-long chain. It is shown that a classical spin model derived from the ab initio calculations containing only two-spin interactions supports opposite chirality of the spin spiral compared to a direct optimization of the spin configuration within the ab initio method. The localized magnon modes of isolated $k\pi$ skyrmions on a field-polarized background are analyzed based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation within the terms of an atomistic classical spin model, with system parameters based on the Pd/Fe biatomic layer on Ir(111). For increasing skyrmion order $k$ a higher number of excitation modes are found, including modes with nodes in the radial eigenfunctions. It is shown that at low fields $2\pi$ and $3\pi$ skyrmions are destroyed via a burst instability connected to a breathing mode, while $1\pi$ skyrmions undergo an elliptic instability. At high fields all $k\pi$ skyrmions collapse due to the instability of a breathing mode. The effective damping parameters of the spin waves are calculated in the low Gilbert damping limit, and they are found to diverge in the case of the lowest-lying modes at the burst and collapse instabilities, but not at the elliptic instability. It is shown that the breathing modes of $k\pi$ skyrmions may become overdamped at higher Gilbert damping values., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Antiferromagnetic materials hold promising prospects in novel types of spintronics applications. Assessing the stability of antiferromagnetic nanostructures against thermal excitations is a crucial aspect of designing devices with a high information density. Here we use theoretical calculations and numerical simulations to determine the mean switching time of antiferromagnetic nanoparticles in the superparamagnetic limit. It is demonstrated that the thermal stability is drastically reduced compared to ferromagnetic particles in the limit of low Gilbert damping, attributed to the exchange enhancement of the attempt frequencies. Damping mechanisms in magnetic systems determine the lifetime, diffusion and transport properties of magnons, domain walls, magnetic vortices, and skyrmions. Based on the phenomenological Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, here the effective damping parameter in noncollinear magnetic systems is determined describing the linewidth in resonance experiments or the decay parameter in time-resolved measurements. It is shown how the effective damping can be calculated from the elliptic polarization of magnons, arising due to the noncollinear spin arrangement. It is concluded that the effective damping is larger than the Gilbert damping, and it may significantly differ between excitation modes.
