The South Orkney Islands (SOI) is a poorly studied Antarctic archipelago located in the Scotia Arc. In this study, we added 25 Demospongiae species to the SOI known sponge richness, which was previously represented by only 16 species. Of these, 22 species represent new records for SOI region, although they were previously recorded from other Antarctic sectors. Samples were collected during two Argentinean Antarctic Research Cruises onboard RV Puerto Deseado. The most frequently collected species were Artemisina apollinis, Iophon gaussi, I. unicorne, Lissodendoryx (E.) ramilobosa, Myxodoryx hanitschi and Tedania (T.) tantula. Data and illustrations of some rare or uncommon species are provided: Iophon gaussi, Lissodendoryx (E.) anacantha, Microxina charcoti, Raspailia (H.) hentscheli, Haliclona spongiosissima, Haliclona (G.) cf. cucurbitiformis. Although the present results increase substantially the previously known information on sponge species, this is still an underestimation of total richness because certain orders (Tetractinellida, Suberitida, Biemnida, Polymastiida) and classes were not studied during the current investigation, although previous records were included.

The Galician Bank (GB) is a seamount located 180 km away from the Galician coast (Northwest Spain), in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean. The summit occurs at a depth between 650 and 1500 m with the maximum depth reaching 4000 m (the abyssal bottom). The water masses, twists, eddies, and geomorphology favour the retention of nutrients and larvae, thus, being an area rich in nutrients. It is a hotspot of biodiversity and an important place for benthic communities. This study aims to inventory and review the asteroid fauna collected during the LIFE+INDEMARES project in GB, compare the new findings with previous studies Official Spanish Checklist (IEEM: "Inventario Español de Especies Marinas", Manjón-Cabeza et al. 2017, 2020) and update our knowledge of the diversity and distribution of known species. In this study a total of 272 asteroid specimens belonging to 19 species were found at 45 stations in depths between 765-1764 m, as part of the LIFE+INDEMARES-Galician Bank (2010-2011) surveys. The most frequently encountered species were Plinthaster dentatus (Perrier, 1884), Peltaster placenta (Müller & Troschel, 1842) and Henricia caudani (Koehler, 1895). Circeaster americanus (A.H. Clark, 1916) and Hymenaster giboryi (Perrier, 1894) are new observations from this area. For several species, including Henricia caudani, Pedicellaster typicus M. Sars, 1861, Podosphaeraster thalassae Cherbonnier, 1970 and Hymenaster giboryi known bathymetric range has been extended.

Little is known about dispersal in deep-sea ecosystems, especially for sponges, which are abundant ecosystem engineers. Understanding patterns of gene flow in deep-sea sponges is essential, especially in areas where rising pressure from anthropogenic activities makes difficult to combine management and conservation. Here, we combined population genomics and oceanographic modelling to understand how Northeast Atlantic populations (Cantabrian Sea to Norway) of the deep-sea sponge Phakellia ventilabrum are connected. The analysis comprised ddRADseq derived SNP datasets of 166 individuals collected from 57 sampling stations from 17 different areas, including two Marine Protected Areas, one Special Area of Conservation and other areas with different levels of protection. The 4,017 neutral SNPs used indicated high connectivity and panmixis amongst the majority of areas (Ireland to Norway), spanning ca. 2,500-km at depths of 99–900 m. This was likely due to the presence of strong ocean currents allowing long-distance larval transport, as supported by our migration analysis and by 3D particle tracking modelling. On the contrary, the Cantabrian Sea and Roscoff (France) samples, the southernmost areas in our study, appeared disconnected from the remaining areas, probably due to prevailing current circulation patterns and topographic features, which might be acting as barriers for gene flow. Despite this major genetic break, our results suggest that all protected areas studied are well-connected with each other. Interestingly, analysis of SNPs under selection replicated results obtained for neutral SNPs. The relatively low genetic diversity observed along the study area, though, highlights the potential fragility of this species to changing climates, which might compromise resilience to future threats.

This Special Issue (SI) of Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science presents contributions from ISOBAY 17: the XVII International Symposium on the Oceanography of the Bay of Biscay. The main objective of this SI is to gather recent multidisciplinary research about the Bay of Biscay, covering different aspects from biological oceanography to marine geology and marine resources or habitat restoration and conservation. This SI aims as well to serve as a presentation platform for the most up to date scientific knowledge relating to the Bay of Biscay, from the open ocean and the deep sea to its coastal zone, and its transitional waters (estuaries, lagoons, and deltas). This common focus allowed a multidisciplinary approach in a wide range of disciplines, from biological oceanography to marine geology and integrative assessment of the marine environment. The contributing authors have explored a wide variety of these issues. The 24 selected articles provide a representative overview of the investigations carried out in this particular bay and cover the diversity of threats and opportunities faced by the marine environment of the Bay of Biscay and the people it supports. These investigations constitute a significant contribution towards an integrated knowledge of the Bay of Biscay and, hopefully, will serve as a basis for an integrative management of this region by a multi-disciplinary community of researchers, educators, and practitioners.

Gorgonians play a fundamental role in the deep sea (below 200 m depth), composing three-dimensional habitats that are characterized by a high associated biodiversity and playing an important part in biogeochemical cycles. Here we describe the use of a benthic lander to monitoring polyps activity, used as a proxy of gorgonian feeding activity of three colonies of Placogorgia sp. Images cover a period of 22 days with a temporal resolution of 30 min. In addition, this seafloor observatory is instrumented with oceanographic sensors that allows continuous monitoring of the hydrographic conditions in the site. Deep-learning is used for automatic detection of the state of the polyps registered in the images. More than 1000 images of 3 large specimens of gorgonians are analyzed, annotating polyps as extended or retracted, using the semantic segmentation algorithm ConvNeXt. The segmentation results are used to describe the feeding patterns of this species. Placogorgia sp. shows a daily pattern of feeding conduct, depending on the hours of day and night. Using a Singular Spectrum Analysis approach, feeding activity is related to currents dynamics and Acoustic Doppler Current Profile (ADCP) return signal intensity, as proxy of suspended matter, achieving a linear correlation of 0.35 and 0.11 respectively. This is the first time that the behavior of the Placogorgia polyps, directly related to their feeding process, is described.

En el presente trabajo analizamos el uso de big data, así como de tecnologías vinculadas a la inteligencia artificial, en las labores de ciberpatrullaje y ciberinvestigación que realizan las fuerzas y cuerpos de seguridad. Nuestro objetivo principal es evidenciar aquellos aspectos que, en relación con dicho empleo, precisan de un abordaje legal que asegure la transparencia y el control de su funcionamiento, reduciendo, asimismo, los riesgos implícitos en su potencial capacidad de afectar derechos fundamentales. No puede examinarse el recurso a estas nuevas tecnologías sin alertar, igualmente, de los peligros de incurrir en una deriva probabilística que acabe reduciendo la actuación policial a la aplicación acrítica y automática de fórmulas algorítmicas.

Macro and megafauna were studied in the Aviles Canyon System (ACS), southern Bay of Biscay (Cantabrian Sea), during several oceanographic cruises carried out from 2009 to 2017. The biodiversity of ACS is summarized and its description is herein updated after sampling surveys of several programmes (ECOMARG, INDEMARES, SponGES) conducted by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO). This study has updated previous knowledge in the canyon area from past national and international projects, their reports and publications as well as data collected in the context of regional projects designed to gain new insight into the diversity of marine invertebrates and fishes from the ACS. Samples were taken using a range of sampling gears (Rock dredge, Beam trawl, Trawl gear GOC-73, Suprabenthic sledge, Box corer and Remoted operated vehicle), from 55 to 2291 m in depth. A total of 1011 species were identified at the ACS: 98 Porifera, 153 Cnidaria, 14 Brachiopoda, 22 Bryozoa, 97 Mollusca, 151 Annelida, 311 Arthropoda, 74 Echinodermata and 91 Chordata. New records for the Bay of Biscay fauna include 13 Porifera species, 17 Cnidaria, 7 Mollusca, 8 Arthopoda, 3 Echinodermata and 4 Chordata. Also the bathymetric range of some species has been extended. As a result of the research projects carried out in the area in the last fifteen years (ECOMARG, INDEMARES, SponGES, INTEMARES), important information is now available which suggests that the ACS houses a large number of several, including species with a high ecological value, and that it represents a biodiversity hotspot in terms of the presence of sponge aggregations and coral reefs in certain regions and sustains important fisheries due to the abundance of comercial species. Given the relevance of the species and habitats occurring in the ACS, there is a need to implement a conservation and management plan of the area in order to maintain habitats in good state of preservation.

The Avilés Canyon System (ACS) is located at the Southern Bay of Biscay (Northern Spain, Cantabrian Sea). The ACS occupies a total of 339.026 ha and is composed of three canyons, reaching the abyssal plain at 4700 m depth. Water masses that mix in the area form gyres and upwelling that contribute to increasing the nutrients at different depths, which makes it an important place for the settlement of benthic communities. They have been declared Site of Community Importance (SCI: C ESZZ12003) within the Natura 2000 Network and recognized as a Vulnerable Marine Ecosystem where Echinoderms play an important role in these communities and habitats. The present study tries to inventory and review asteroid fauna collected during the INDEMARES project in the ACS and compare the new findings with previous studies Official Spanish Checklist (IEEM: “Inventario Español de Especies Marinas”, 2017, 2020) to update our knowledge on the diversity and distribution of the asteroid's species. During the surveys carried out within the project LIFE + INDEMARES-Avilés Canyon System (2010–2012) a total of 445 specimens, belonging to 25 Asteroids species, were collected from 36 stations in a depth range between 266 and 1476 m. The most frequent species were Nymphaster arenatus (Perrier, 1881) (30.55%) and Henricia caudani (Koehler, 1895) (25%). After public datasets, two species should be considered as new records for Spanish waters: Radiaster tizardi (Sladen, 1882) and Henricia sexradiata (Perrier, 1881), and 4 species expand their bathymetric range: Novodinia pandina (Sladen, 1889), H. caudani, H. sexradiata (Perrier, 1881) and Myxaster perrieri Koehler, 1895.

This work focuses on the study of habitats and communities of a high structural complexity area at different levels and scales. This gives us a better understanding of an area from an ecological point of view and at the same time provides us with tools that will facilitate management measures. It was developed in a complex circalittoral rocky platform of the central Cantabrian Sea (Bay of Biscay). The sampling was carried out using a towed photogrammetric vehicle and a rock dredge, which was used for the identification of the species. The first level of the study was the abiotic characterization of the area and the analysis of the communities. These analysis were developed using the unsupervised k-means classification method. For abiotic characterization we used the variables directly associated with the composition and morphology of the ground, such as backscatter, BPI (Bathymetric Position Index), roughness and slope. Depth was also included to discriminate between the circalittoral and bathyal zones. We obtained 5 different classes, which we related to the ground types observed by photogrammetry. In the analysis of the communities, the cluster was based on the sampling units extracted from the images (~10 m), from which 5 assemblages were obtained, providing information on the most abundant species of each class supplied by the abiotic study. The second level was carried out considering a management approach and was based on the modeling of the area at lower resolution, more suitable for the analysis of the habitat-fisheries interactions. Thus, the main habitat-forming species (HFS) of the entire circalittoral area were used to perform delta models based on GAMs (Generalize Additive Models). In the deep ocean symbioses between microbes and invertebrates are emerging as key drivers of ecosystem health and services. We present a large-scale analysis of microbial diversity in deep-sea sponges (Porifera) from scales of sponge individuals to ocean basins, covering 52 locations, 1077 host individuals translating into 169 sponge species (including understudied glass sponges), and 469 reference samples, collected anew during 21 ship-based expeditions. We demonstrate the impacts of the sponge microbial abundance status, geographic distance, sponge phylogeny, and the physical- biogeochemical environment as drivers of microbiome composition, in descending order of relevance. Our study further discloses that fundamental concepts of sponge microbiology apply robustly to sponges from the deep-sea across distances of >10,000 km. Deep-sea sponge microbiomes are less complex, yet more heterogeneous, than their shallow-water counterparts. Our analysis underscores the uniqueness of each deep-sea sponge ground based on which we provide critical knowledge for conservation of these vulnerable ecosystems.
