1. Towards a modular, multi-ecosystem monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) framework for soil organic carbon stock change assessment

Abstract: Soils are the largest terrestrial reservoir of organic carbon, yet they are easily degraded. Consistent and accurate monitoring of changes in soil organic carbon stocks and net greenhouse gas emissions, reporting, and their verification is key to facilitate investment in sustainable land use practices that maintain or increase soil organic carbon stocks, as well as to incorporate soil organic carbon sequestration in national greenhouse gas emission reduction targets. Building up on an initial review of monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) schemes with a focus on croplands, grasslands, and forestlands we develop a framework for a modular, scalable MRV system. We then provide an inventory and classification of selected MRV methodologies and subsequently “score” them against a list of key characteristics. It appears that the main challenge in developing a unified MRV system concerns the monitoring component. Finally, we present a conceptual workflow that shows how a prototype for an operational, modular multi-ecosystem MRV tool could be systematically built.

2. A global meta-analysis of soil organic carbon in the Anthropocene

Abstract: Abstract Anthropogenic activities profoundly impact soil organic carbon (SOC), affecting its contribution to ecosystem services such as climate regulation. Here, we conducted a thorough review of the impacts of land-use change, land management, and climate change on SOC. Using second-order meta-analysis, we synthesized findings from 230 first-order meta-analyses comprising over 25,000 primary studies. We show that (i) land conversion for crop production leads to high SOC loss, that can be partially restored through land management practices, particularly by introducing trees and incorporating exogenous carbon in the form of biochar or organic amendments, (ii) land management practices that are implemented in forests generally result in depletion of SOC, and (iii) indirect effects of climate change, such as through wildfires, have a greater impact on SOC than direct climate change effects (e.g., from rising temperatures). The findings of our study provide strong evidence to assist decision-makers in safeguarding SOC stocks and promoting land management practices for SOC restoration. Furthermore, they serve as a crucial research roadmap, identifying areas that require attention to fill the knowledge gaps concerning the factors driving changes in SOC.

Abstract: Abstract Numerical models are crucial to understand and/or predict past and future soil organic carbon dynamics. For those models aiming at prediction, validation is a critical step to gain confidence in projections. With a comprehensive review of ~250 models, we assess how models are validated depending on their objectives and features, discuss how validation of predictive models can be improved. We find a critical lack of independent validation using observed time series. Conducting such validations should be a priority to improve the model reliability. Approximately 60% of the models we analysed are not designed for predictions, but rather for conceptual understanding of soil processes. These models provide important insights by identifying key processes and alternative formalisms that can be relevant for predictive models. We argue that combining independent validation based on observed time series and improved information flow between predictive and conceptual models will increase reliability in predictions.

5. Comparison of soil organic carbon stocks predicted using visible and near infrared reflectance (VNIR) spectra acquired in situ vs. on sieved dried samples: Synthesis of different studies

Abstract: There is increasing demand for data on soil organic carbon (SOC) stock (SSOC; kgC m−2), but the acquisition of such data, which relies on the determination of volumetric SOC content (SOCv; gC dm−3), is often tedious or complex. Visible and near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (VNIRS) has proven useful for soil characterization, but has rarely been used for direct prediction of SOCv. The objectives of this work were: (i) to compare SOCv predictions using VNIR spectra collected in situ vs. on 2-mm sieved air-dried soil (laboratory conditions), on three sample sets separately (with in situ spectra collected differently for each set); and (ii) to assess SOCv prediction in independent validation using laboratory spectra from all sets.Predictions of SOCv were more accurate using laboratory than in situ spectra for two sets, but not for the third set, where coarse particles content was rather high and variable. Considering the total set of laboratory spectra, predictions in independent validation (leave-one-site-out) yielded accurate SOCv and SSOC predictions (standard errors of prediction were 1.9 gC dm−3 and 0.36 kgC m−2 at 0–30 cm depth, respectively). This result was achieved using local partial least squares regression (PLSR), based on spectral neighbors, which noticeably outperformed global PLSR (which uses all calibration samples equally), as often reported when using large soil spectral libraries for independent validation.Finally, this work demonstrated that SSOC could be quantified accurately using a VNIRS library built on archive soil samples, which offers important perspectives for SSOC accounting.

Abstract: Agroforestry systems comprise trees and crops, or trees and pastures within the same field. Globally, they cover approximately 1 billion hectares of land and contribute to the livelihoods of over 900 million people. Agroforestry systems have the capacity to sequester large quantities of carbon (C) in both soil and biomass. However, these systems have not yet been fully considered in the approach to C accounting developed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, largely due to the high diversity of agroforestry systems and scarcity of relevant data. Our literature review identified a total of 72 scientific, peer-reviewed articles associated with biomass C storage (50) and with soil organic carbon (SOC) (122), containing a total of 542 observations (324 and 218, respectively). Based on a synthesis of the reported observations, we are presenting a set of Tier 1 coefficients for biomass C storage for each of the eight main agroforestry systems identified, including alley cropping, fallows, hedgerows, multistrata, parklands, shaded perennial-crop, silvoarable and silvopastoral systems, disaggregated by climate and region. Using the same agroforestry classification, we are presenting a set of stock change factors ( F _LU ) and SOC accumulation/loss rates for three main land use changes (LUCs): cropland to agroforestry; forest to agroforestry; and grassland to agroforestry. Globally, the mean SOC stock change factors (± confidence intervals) were estimated to be 1.25 ± 0.04, 0.89 ± 0.07, and 1.19 ± 0.10, for the three main LUCs, respectively. However, these average coefficients hide huge disparities across and within different climates, regions, and types of agroforestry systems, highlighting the necessity to adopt the more disaggregated coefficients provided herein. We encourage national governments to synthesize data from local field experiments to generate country-specific factors for more robust estimation of biomass and SOC storage.

Abstract: Identifying the drivers of soil organic carbon (SOC) stock changes is of the utmost importance to contribute to global challenges like climate change, land degradation, biodiversity loss, or food security. Evaluating the impacts of land use and management practices in agriculture and forestry on SOC is still challenging. Merging datasets or making databases interoperable is a promising way, but still has several semantic challenges. So far, a comprehensive thesaurus and classification of management practices in agriculture and forestry has been lacking, especially while focusing on SOC storage. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to present a first comprehensive thesaurus for management practices driving SOC storage (DATA4C+). The DATA4C+ thesaurus contains 224 classified and defined terms related to land management practices in agriculture and forestry. It is organized as a hierarchical tree reflecting the drivers of SOC storage. It is oriented to be used by scientists in agronomy, forestry, and soil sciences with the aim of uniformizing the description of practices influencing SOC in their original research. It is accessible in Agroportal (http://agroportal.lirmm.fr/ontologies/DATA4CPLUS, last access: 24 March 2022) to enhance its findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reuse by scientists and others such as laboratories or land managers. Future uses of the DATA4C+ thesaurus will be crucial to improve and enrich it, but also to raise the quality of meta-analyses on SOC, and ultimately help policymakers to identify efficient agricultural and forest management practices to enhance SOC storage.

10. Long-term tillage, residue management and crop rotation impacts on N2O and CH4 emissions from two contrasting soils in sub-humid Zimbabwe

Abstract: The respective contribution of conservation agriculture (CA) principles (no-tillage, permanent soil cover/mulch and crop rotations) on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is still unclear. This study was conducted at two long-term experimental sites established in 2013 in Zimbabwe, on an abruptic Lixisol at Domboshava Training Center (DTC) and on a xanthic Ferralsol at the University of Zimbabwe Farm (UZF). The purpose of the study was to unravel the individual and combined effects of tillage, mulching and rotation on N2O and CH4 emissions in low nitrogen (N) input maize-based cropping systems (< 60 kg N ha−1) and to compare emissions within maize rows and between maize rows. We hypothesised that integrating no tillage, mulch and cereal-legume rotation would enhance N2O emissions. Six treatments, replicated four times were investigated: conventional tillage, conventional tillage with rotation, no-tillage, no-tillage with mulch, no-tillage with rotation, no-tillage with mulch and rotation. The main crop was maize (Zea mays L.) and treatments with rotation included cowpea (Vigna unguiculate L. Walp.). Gas samples were regularly collected using the static chamber method in the maize row and inter-row spaces during the 2019/20 and 2020/21 cropping seasons and during the 2020/21 dry season. Soil moisture and mineral N were measured in the 0–20 cm soil depth. In 2019/20, cumulative total N2O emissions were significantly higher in mulch treatments at DTC, while at UZF N2O emissions were higher with cowpea rotation. Cumulative total N2O emissions ranged from 215 to 496 g N2O-N ha−1 yr−1 and from 226 to 395 g N2O-N ha−1 yr−1, at DTC and UZF, respectively. In 2020/21, N2O emissions were much lower and no differences were found between treatments on both sites (145 to 179 g N2O-N ha−1 yr−1 and 83 to 136 g N2O-N ha−1 yr−1 at DTC and UZF, respectively). A significant relationship was found between soil nitrate and daily N2O emissions. At UZF, highest N2O emissions were observed at a water-filled pore space of 60–70%. There were no significant differences in yield-scaled N2O emissions between treatments at both sites for the two seasons. DTC was a net source of CH4 (694 g CH4-C ha−1 yr−1 on average), while UZF was a net sink of CH4 (−494 g CH4-C ha−1 yr−1 on average). No evidence was found for in situ CH4 production at DTC, and an external source is most likely. Our study indicates that for low N input cropping systems in the sub-humid tropics, N loss through N2O is low.

Abstract: We have read with interest an opinion paper recently published in the European Journal of Soil Science (Berthelin et al., 2022). This paper presents some interesting considerations, at least one of which is already well known to soil scientists working on soil organic carbon (SOC), that is, a large portion (80%–90%) of fresh carbon inputs to soil is subject to rapid mineralization. The short-term mineralization kinetics of organic inputs is well-known and accounted for in soil organic matter models. Thus, clearly, the long-term predictions based on these models do not overlook short-term mineralization. We point out that many agronomic practices can significantly contribute to SOC sequestration. If conducted responsibly whilst fully recognising the caveats, SOC sequestration can lead to a win-win situation where agriculture can both contribute to the mitigation of climate change and adapt to it, whilst at the same time delivering other co-benefits such as reduced soil erosion and enhanced biodiversity., European Journal of Soil Science, 73 (3), ISSN:1351-0754, ISSN:1365-2389

Abstract: Increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) in natural and cultivated ecosystems is proposed as a natural climate solution to limit global warming. SOC dynamics is driven by numerous factors such as land-use change, land management and climate change. The amount of additional carbon potentially stored in the soil is the subject of much debate in the scientific community. We present a global database compiling the results of 217 meta-analyses analyzing the effects of land management, land-use change and climate change on SOC. We report a total of 15,857 effect sizes, 6,550 directly related to soil carbon, and 9,307 related to other associated soil or plant variables. The database further synthesizes results of 13,632 unique primary studies across more than 150 countries that were used in the meta-analyses. Meta-analyses and their effect sizes and were classified by type of intervention and land use, outcomes, country and region. This database helps to understand the drivers of SOC sequestration, the associated co-benefits and potential drawbacks, and is a useful tool to guide future global climate change policies.

Abstract: This paper stemmed from a workshop 'Emerging challenges in large scale soil carbon sequestration' held in Paris on 8-10 October 2018; International audience; To respect the Paris agreement targeting a limitation of global warming below 2°C by 2100, and possibly below 1.5°C, drastic reductions of greenhouse gas emissions are mandatory but not sufficient. Large‐scale deployment of other climate mitigation strategies are also necessary. Among these, increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks is an important lever because carbon in soils can be stored for long periods and land management options to achieve this already exist and have been widely tested. However, agricultural soils are also an important source of nitrous oxide (N$_2$O), a powerful greenhouse gas, and increasing SOC may influence N$_2$O emissions, likely causing an increase in many cases, thus tending to offset the climate change benefit from increased SOC storage. Here, we review the main agricultural management options for increasing SOC stocks. We evaluate the amount of SOC that can be stored as well as resulting changes in N$_2$O emissions to better estimate the climate benefits of these management options. Based on quantitative data obtained from published meta‐analyses and from our current level of understanding, we conclude that the climate mitigation induced by increased SOC storage is generally overestimated if associated N$_2$O emissions are not considered but, with the exception of reduced tillage, is never fully offset. Some options (e.g, biochar or non‐pyrogenic C amendment application) may even decrease N$_2$O emissions.; Pour respecter l'accord de Paris visant à limiter le réchauffement climatique à moins de 2°C d'ici 2100, et éventuellement à moins de 1,5°C, des réductions drastiques des émissions de gaz à effet de serre sont obligatoires mais pas suffisantes. Le déploiement à grande échelle d'autres stratégies d'atténuation du climat est également nécessaire. Parmi celles-ci, l'augmentation des stocks de carbone organique du sol (SOC) est un levier important car le carbone dans les sols peut être stocké pendant de longues périodes et les options de gestion des terres pour y parvenir existent déjà et ont été largement testées. Toutefois, les sols agricoles sont également une source importante d'oxyde nitreux (N$_2$O), un puissant gaz à effet de serre, et l'augmentation du SOC peut influer sur les émissions de N$_$O, provoquant probablement une augmentation dans de nombreux cas, tendant ainsi à compenser le bénéfice du changement climatique résultant du stockage accru du SOC. Nous passons ici en revue les principales options de gestion agricole pour l'augmentation des stocks de SOC. Nous évaluons la quantité de SOC qui peut être stockée ainsi que les changements qui en résultent dans les émissions de N$_2$O afin de mieux estimer les avantages climatiques de ces options de gestion. Sur la base des données quantitatives obtenues à partir de méta-analyses publiées et de notre niveau de compréhension actuel, nous concluons que l'atténuation du climat induite par un stockage accru du SOC est généralement surestimée si l'on ne tient pas compte des émissions de N$_2$O associées, mais, à l'exception du travail réduit du sol, n'est jamais totalement compensée. Abstract: Poor soil fertility and erratic rainfall constrain crop production in rain-fed smallholder farming systems in sub-Saharan Africa. Integration of drought tolerant and N2-fixing crops into maize-based cropping systems is a risk-averse strategy that also improves nitrogen cycling. A field experiment was carried out during the 2017/18 and 2018/19 cropping seasons in Goromonzi district in Zimbabwe. The trials were established on 14 farms, and on two field types (homefields and outfields), with eight treatments from a combination of cropping systems (maize and cowpea monocrops or maize/cowpea intercrops) and with or without nitrogen fertilizer (+N; -N). The trials were implemented on the same field plots for the two consecutive seasons. An improved cowpea variety and a landrace were used. The objectives were to determine 1) the productivity of the different cropping systems under variable soil fertility conditions, 2) N2-fixation of the two cowpea types when planted as monocrops or intercrops, and 3) mineral composition of maize and cowpea grains from intercrops and sole crops. Contrary to expected results, soil properties were not significantly different (P > 0.05) between field types. The land equivalent ratios (LER) were >1 for both seasons, implying improved land productivity under intercropping. Intercropping significantly reduced cowpea nodulation and active nodules, but not the total nodule weight, resulting in similar proportion of nitrogen derived from the atmosphere (%Ndfa) for cowpea grown as monocrop or in intercropping with maize. However, the total amount of fixed nitrogen was reduced in intercropping systems due to the smaller cowpea biomass compared to monocropping. Maize and cowpea grain mineral contents (Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Ca, Mg, P, K) were significantly affected by the cropping season only. We showed that intercropping maize with cowpea generally increases system productivity, in addition to substantial amounts of nitrogen being added to the system through N2-fixation. However, intercropping was not an agronomic biofortification option in these nutrient-depleted soils. Finally, annual variation in grain mineral quality can be larger than the annual variation in grain yield, potentially posing serious challenges to human nutrition.

Abstract: International audience; L’initiative « 4 pour 1 000 : les sols pour la sécurité alimentaire et le climat » propose d’augmenter chaque année d’un quatre millième le stock de carbone présent dans tous les sols du monde. À la demande de l’Ademe et du ministère de l’Agriculture et de l’Alimentation, l’Inra (devenu aujourd’hui INRAE) a conduit une étude, centrée sur la France métropolitaine, visant à estimer le potentiel de stockage de carbone des sols agricoles et forestiers et, in fine, à mesurer la contribution potentielle de ce levier à l’objectif de réduction des émissions nettes de gaz à effet de serre. Diverses pratiques candidates (cultures intermédiaires, apport de nouvelles ressources organiques, gestion des prairies, agroforesterie …) ont été évaluées. Les résultats obtenus ont montré une forte variabilité du stockage additionnel de carbone. L’étude a également permis d’estimer le coût supplémentaire, pour les agriculteurs, de mise en œuvre de ces pratiques de stockage, puis une allocation de l’effort de stockage entre les pratiques et les régions a été effectuée. Ces données permettront aux différents acteurs concernés de faire les meilleurs choix pour stocker davantage de carbone dans les sols. Cet ouvrage s’adresse aux décideurs chargés de l’élaboration des politiques publiques climatiques dans le domaine agricole, aux responsables territoriaux, aux aménageurs, aux ingénieurs et techniciens, aux agriculteurs et à l’ensemble des citoyens intéressés par la problématique de l’agriculture et du changement climatique.

Abstract: International audience; AbstractIntercropping is a common practice among farmers in sub-Saharan Africa, regarded as a sustainable way of improving land productivity to meet food and nutritional requirements for a growing population, especially in marginal areas. Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp) is often intercropped with major cereal crops, maize (Zea mays L.), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) and pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucumL.R.Br). Here we conducted a systematic literature review on cowpea intercropped with maize, sorghum or pearl millet reported in sub-Saharan Africa with the objectives (i) to determine yield and productivity of component crops and (ii) to quantify biological N2-fixation in sole or intercrops. We retrieved 60 unique publications combining 1196, 998 and 25 observations of yields, land productivity and N2-fixation, respectively, for crops grown as intercrops and monocrops. The major results are as follows: (1) land productivity of cowpea intercropped with maize, sorghum and pearl millet is favourable, with average land equivalent ratios of 1.42 ± 0.47, 1.26 ± 0.35 and 1.30 ± 0.32, respectively; (2) no significant differences between the proportion of nitrogen derived from the atmosphere (%Ndfa) for sole or intercropped cowpea were found, with average values of 56.00 ± 4.89 and 46.62 ± 7.05, respectively; (3) however, the total amount of fixed nitrogen was higher in cowpea monocropping systems due to higher biomass production; nitrogen fixation was 57 kg N ha−1 and 36 kg N ha−1 in monocrops and intercrops respectively. We conclude that cereal-cowpea intercropping is a pathway for intensification for the low nutrient input systems of smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa. Our review also suggests potential for improvement of these systems, based on the choice of the associated varieties, planting patterns and sowing time, cowpea leaf harvesting as a vegetable, and fertilization.

22. Contribution of inorganic carbon to CO2 emissions under a Mediterranean agroforestry system

Abstract: In the last years, soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics have been explored for agronomic and environmental issues in different agro systems. Many soils of the world, especially in arid and semi-arid environments, contain large stocks of soil inorganic carbon (SIC) as carbonates. Yet, the SOC dynamics has been poorly investigated in these soils, due to the complexity of measurements and of the processes involved. Indeed, few previous studies have shown links between SIC and SOC dynamics. Theses interactions are initiated by biological activities, i.e. CO2 production, are explained through equilibrium equations between soil carbonates and bicarbonates. However, few data were available on the specific impact of SIC on SOC mineralization especially at increasing soil depth.Alley agroforestry systems increased SOC content in the tree rows without any change in the SIC content. The heterogeneity in organic inputs and SOC contents induced by alley agroforestry allows the investigation of the interactions between SIC and SOC on CO2 emissions.To assess contributions of SIC to CO2 emissions with depth, we incubated carbonaceous soil samples coming from an 18-year-old agroforestry system (both tree row and alley) and an adjacent agricultural plot. Soil samples were taken at four different depths: 0-10, 10-30, 70-100 and 160-180 cm. Total CO2 emissions, the isotopic composition (δ13C, ‰) of the CO2 and microbial biomass were measured. The SIC concentrations were from 48 to 63 g C kg-1 soil and the SOC concentrations from 4 to 17 g C kg-1 soil. The total amounts of CO2 emissions from soil were correlated to C contents and decreased with depth (from 183-569 µgC g-1 soil in top soil vs 21-25 µgC g-1 soil in subsoil).The contribution of SIC-derived CO2 was not homogenous along the soil profile. It represented about 20% in the topsoil and 60% in the subsoil of the total soil CO2 emissions. As the SOC content and the microbial biomass, the SOC-derived CO2 emissions were larger in the topsoil especially in the tree row compared to the alley and the agricultural plot. The SIC-derived CO2 emissions were also larger in topsoil and in tree rows at 0-10 cm than in alleys or agricultural plots (71 µg C g-1 soil vs 45-48 µg C g-1 soil) or in the subsoil (13-15 µg C g-1 soil), whereas the amount of SIC was similar in top and subsoil and in tree rows, alleys or agricultural soils. This indicate that CO2 emissions from SIC were linked to the SOC content and its mineralization. In addition, our results suggest that the measurement of soil respiration in calcareous soils could be overestimated if the isotopic signature of the CO2 is not taken into account. Abstract: International audience; Background and aims: Agroforestry systems combining trees with crops or pastures have been widely used to reduce water, soil, and nutrient losses and associated water pollution from agricultural lands in both temperate and tropical regions. However, reviews on improvement/efficiency and the scope of such reductions by soil, management, climate, and hydrological processes are limited.Methods: This paper synthesized the available evidence on the reduction in surface runoff, soil erosion, nutrient, and pollutant losses (e.g., herbicides, pesticides, and antibiotics) to quantify the effectiveness of agroforestry systems on water quality improvement based on published studies.Results: On average, agroforestry systems reduced surface runoff, soil, organic carbon, and related nutrient losses by 1–100%, 0–97%, –175–92%, and –265–100%, respectively, with average values of 58%, 65%, 9%, and 50%, respectively. They also lowered herbicide, pesticide, and other pollutant losses by –55–100% (49% on average).Conclusions: Reduction efficiency of agroforestry systems is site-dependent and varies widely depending on different biophysical factors. A comprehensive science-based review is needed to generalize agroforestry design and site adaptability for water and soil conservation where climatic, geographical, ecological, and socio-economic conditions are relatively similar in the world.

Abstract: International audience; Aims: Mineral-associated organic matter, mainly derived from microbial by-products, persists longer in soil compared to particulate organic matter (POM). POM is highly recalcitrant and originates largely from decomposing root and shoot litter. Theory suggests that root traits and growth dynamics should affect carbon (C) accumulation into these different pools, but the specific traits driving this accumulation are not clearly identified.Methods: Twelve herbaceous species were grown for 37 weeks in monocultures. Root elongation rate (RER) was measured throughout the experiment. At the end of the experiment, we determined morphological and chemical root traits, as well as substrate induced respiration (SIR) as a proxy for microbial activity. Carbon was measured in four different soil fractions, following particle-size and density fractionation.Results: Root biomass, RER, root diameter, hemicellulose content and SIR (characteristic of N2-fixing Fabaceae species), were all positively correlated with increased C in the coarse silt fraction. Root diameter and hemicellulose content were negatively correlated with C in the POM fraction, that was greater under non N2-fixing Poaceae species, characterized by lignin-rich roots with a high carbon:nitrogen ratio that grew slowly. The accumulation of C in different soil pools was mediated by microbial activity.Conclusions: Our results show that root traits determine C input into different soil pools, mediated primarily by microbial activity, thus determining the fate of soil organic C. We also highlight that C in different soil pools, and not only total soil organic C, should be reported in future studies to better understand its origin, fate and dynamics.

26. Sustaining maize yields and soil carbon following land clearing in the forest–savannah transition zone of West Africa: Results from a 20-year experiment

Abstract: Sustainable alternatives to slash-and-burn shifting cultivation in the (sub)humid tropics rely on the use of external nutrient inputs to address soil fertility decline. The use of organic inputs is widely accepted as a practice to improve soil fertility, in particular soil organic carbon (SOC). On the other hand, its combined use with mineral fertilizer has the potential to maintain or increase crop productivity through positive interactive effects between both resources. Few studies have investigated these effects in the long term. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate whether maize productivity and soil SOC can be sustained under permanent cropping with sole and combined use of compost and mineral nitrogen (N) fertilizer. Here, we report results from a long-term experiment carried out in Gagnoa, Ivory Coast, from 1971 to 1990. The experiment followed a randomized block design comprising eight replicates of 12 treatments. The two studied factors were compost (0 or 10 t DM ha−1 yr−1) and mineral N (0, 40, 80, 120, 160 or 200 kg N ha−1 yr−1) additions. Average maize grain yields of the first cropping cycles were significantly lower without compost (5.05 ± 1.57 t ha−1) than with compost addition (6.07 ± 1.31 t ha−1). The annual yield variability as shown by the standard deviation of the mean was reduced by 20% with compost addition. Without compost, 53% of the initial SOC stock in the 0–20 cm soil layer was lost, resulting in a SOC loss rate of − 0.62 t C ha−1 yr−1 compared to 21% with compost (−0.27 t C ha−1 yr−1). Compost addition therefore reduced SOC loss with an apparent SOC storage rate of 0.35 t C ha−1 yr−1. The conversion rate of organic carbon (OC) inputs to SOC was about 12%. The Introductory Carbon Balance Model (ICBM) reproduced well SOC dynamics, especially without compost. Without mineral N and without compost, maize grain yield decreased with decreasing SOC concentration until the introduction of leguminous crops in the second cropping cycle. We conclude that combined application of compost with mineral N fertilizers was effective at maintaining maize productivity but inadequate to prevent the decline of SOC stocks, despite large additions. Leguminous crops in the rotation were key for maize productivity, but probably due to effects non-related to supplementary N supply.

Abstract: International audience; Agroforestry systems have been much studied for their potential to store soil organic carbon (SOC). However, few data are available on their specific impact on potential SOC mineralization, especially at depth in subsoils. Moreover, many soils of the world, especially in arid and semi‐arid environments, also contain large stocks of soil inorganic carbon (SIC) as carbonates. Consequently, the organic carbon dynamics has been poorly investigated in these soils due to the complexity of measurements and of the processes involved. To assess mineralization rates of SOC with depth, we incubated soil samples coming from an 18‐year‐old agroforestry system (both tree row and alley) and an adjacent agricultural plot established on a calcareous soil in France. Soil samples were taken at four different depths: 0–10, 10–30, 70–100 and 160–180 cm. Total CO2 emissions, the isotopic composition (δ13C, ‰) of the CO2 and microbial biomass were measured. The SIC concentrations ranged from 48 to 63 g C kg−1 soil and the SOC concentrations ranged from 4 to 17 g C kg−1 soil. The contribution of SIC‐derived CO2 represented about 20% in the topsoil and 60% in the subsoil of the total soil CO2 emissions. The microbial biomass and the SOC‐derived CO2 emissions were larger in the topsoil, but the decomposition rates (day−1) remained stable with depth, suggesting that only the size of the labile carbon pool was modified with depth. Subsoil organic carbon seems to be as prone to decomposition as surface organic carbon. No difference in CO2 emissions was found between the agroforestry and the control plot, except in the tree row at 0–10 cm. Our results suggest that the measurement of soil respiration in calcareous soils could be overestimated if the isotopic signature of the CO2 is not taken into account. It also advocates more in‐depth studies on carbonate dissolution‐precipitation processes and their impact on CO2 emissions.

Abstract: International audience; This Special Issue highlights new contributions on the role of agroforestry systems for climate change mitigation and adaptation in different pedoclimatic contexts. This Special Issue was launched during the 4th World Congress on Agroforestry (https://agroforestry2019.cirad.fr/) held in Montpellier, France, 20–22 May 2019. This event gathered more than 1200 delegates and leading keynote speakers from 97 countries (Dupraz et al., 2019). Of the 82 articles received, 14 were considered for publication in this Special Issue, including several articles not presented during the congress. This Special Issue includes eight articles on climate change mitigation through agroforestry, and 6 articles on climate change adaptation (Table 1). Research results presented in this Special Issue cover 10 different countries (plus two papers with a global perspective) encompassing a broad range of agroforestry systems, including shaded perennial-crop systems, agroforests, silvopastures, parklands, hedgerows, and riparian systems.

Abstract: The 4‰ initiative launched by the French government at COP21 in Paris in December 2015 aspires to increase global soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks at a rate of 0.4% per year. We conducted a systematic literature review on SOC storage under agroforestry and conservation agriculture systems in sub-Saharan Africa, where we reported 66 and 33 cases for both systems respectively. The results showed that SOC storage rates were significantly higher than 4‰ yr−1 in fallows and in multistrata agroforestry systems (P = 0.0001 and 0.0178, respectively), but not in alley cropping and parklands systems. For conservation agriculture, SOC storage rates were only significantly higher than 4‰ yr−1 (P = 0.0438) when all three principles were applied, i.e. no- or minimum tillage combined with crop residue retention and intercropping or rotation. The data showed very large variability in SOC storage rates as the result of various factors, including previous land-use history, experimental set up and approach used to determine SOC storage (diachronic versus synchronic approach), soil type, depth of soil sampling, type of crops and management, and duration of the experiment. SOC storage rates significantly decreased with time in the agroforestry systems (P = 0.0328). However, we were unable to find significant relationships with initial SOC stocks or tree density. Given the limited published data and the high variability in results, no significant relationships between SOC storage rates and site variables were found for conservation agriculture. We argue that there is a potential for SOC storage in agricultural soils of sub-Saharan Africa, as illustrated by SOC gaps observed on smallholder farms. Low SOC levels are, however, to a great extent the result of limited resources of most smallholder farmers. Practices such as agroforestry and conservation agriculture can restore SOC in these soils, but the 4‰ initiative has to be implemented on the grounds of the positive impact on crop productivity rather than on climate change mitigation. The efficiency in doing so will depend on the specific situations and will need economic support to smallholder farmers, including the promotion of good markets for sale of extra produce and for input supply, effective private support and policy, such as credit schemes and subsidies for inputs, and efficient extension services which incentivize farmers to invest in new technologies.

Abstract: Agroforestry systems comprise trees and crops, or trees and pastures within the same field. Globally, they cover approximately 1 billion hectares of land and contribute to the livelihoods of over 900 million people. Agroforestry systems have the capacity to sequester large quantities of carbon (C) in both soil and biomass. However, these systems have not yet been fully considered in the approach to C accounting developed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, largely due to the high diversity of agroforestry systems and scarcity of relevant data. Our literature review identified a total of 72 scientific, peer-reviewed articles associated with biomass C storage (50) and with soil organic carbon (SOC) (122), containing a total of 542 observations (324 and 218, respectively). Based on a synthesis of the reported observations, we are presenting a set of Tier 1 coefficients for biomass C storage for each of the eight main agroforestry systems identified, including alley cropping, fallows, hedgerows, multistrata, parklands, shaded perennial-crop, silvoarable and silvopastoral systems, disaggregated by climate and region. Using the same agroforestry classification, we are presenting a set of stock change factors (F LU ) and SOC accumulation/loss rates for three main land use changes (LUCs): cropland to agroforestry; forest to agroforestry; and grassland to agroforestry. Globally, the mean SOC stock change factors (± confidence intervals) were estimated to be 1.25 ± 0.04, 0.89 ± 0.07, and 1.19 ± 0.10, for the three main LUCs, respectively. However, these average coefficients hide huge disparities across and within different climates, regions, and types of agroforestry systems, highlighting the necessity to adopt the more disaggregated coefficients provided herein. We encourage national governments to synthesize data from local field experiments to generate country-specific factors for more robust estimation of biomass and SOC storage.

Abstract: International audience; The aim of this study was to assess how soil organic C (SOC) stocks and earthworm communities were modified in agroforestry systems compared to treeless control plots and within the agroforestry plots (tree rows vs alleys). We used a network of 13 silvoarable agroforestry sites in France along a north/south gradient. Total earthworm abundance and biomass were significantly higher in the tree rows than those in the control plots, but were not modified in the alleys compared to those in the control plots. Earthworm species richness, Shannon index, and species evenness were significantly higher in the tree rows than those in the alleys. Total abundance of epigeic, epi-anecic, strict anecic, and endogeic was higher in the tree rows. Surprisingly, earthworm individual weight was significantly lower in the tree rows than that in the alleys and in the control plots. SOC stocks were significantly higher in the tree rows compared to that in the control plots across all sites. Despite higher SOC stocks in the tree rows, the amount of available C per earthworm individual was lower compared to those in the control. The absence of disturbance (no tillage, no fertilizers, no pesticides) in the tree rows rather than increased SOC stocks therefore seems to be the main factor explaining the increased total abundance, biomass, and diversity of earthworms. The observed differences in earthworm communities between tree rows and alleys may lead to modified and spatially structured SOC dynamics within agroforestry plots.

Abstract: Background and Aims Fine roots play a major role in the global carbon cycle through respiration, exudation and decomposition processes, but their dynamics are poorly understood. Current estimates of root dynamics have principally been observed in shallow soil horizons (2.5 m) root growth occurred at two distinct periods, at bud break in spring and throughout the winter i.e., after leaf fall. In contrast, shallow roots grew mainly during the spring-summer period. Maximum root elongation rates ranged from 1 to 2 cm day−1 depending on soil depth. Most root mortality occurred in upper soil layers whereas only 10 % of fine roots below 4 m died over the study period. Fine root lifespan was longer in thicker and in deeper roots with the lifespan of the thinnest roots (0.0–0.5 mm) increasing from 129 days in the topsoil to 190 at depths > 2.5 m. Conclusions The unexpected growth of very deep fine roots during the winter months, which is unusual for a deciduous tree species, suggests that deep and shallow roots share different physiological strategies and that current estimates based on the shortest root growth periods (i.e., during spring and summer) may be underestimating root production. Although high fine root turnover rates might partially result from the minirhizotron approach used, our results help gain insight into some of the factors driving soil organic carbon content.

Abstract: WOS:000392886700024; International audience; Agroforestry systems are land use management systems in which trees are grown in combination with crops or pasture in the same field. In silvoarable systems, trees are intercropped with arable crops, and in silvopastoral systems trees are combined with pasture for livestock. These systems may produce forage and timber as well as providing ecosystem services such as climate change mitigation. Carbon (C) is stored in the aboveground and belowground biomass of the trees, and the transfer of organic matter from the trees to the soil can increase soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks. Few studies have assessed the impact of agroforestry systems on carbon storage in soils in temperate climates, as most have been undertaken in tropical regions. This study assessed five silvoarable systems and one silvopastoral system in France. All sites had an agroforestry system with an adjacent, purely agricultural control plot. The land use management in the inter-rows in the agroforestry systems and in the control plots were identical. The age of the study sites ranged from 6 to 41 years after tree planting. Depending on the type of soil, the sampling depth ranged from 20 to 100 cm and SOC stocks were assessed using equivalent soil masses. The aboveground biomass of the trees was also measured at all sites. In the silvoarable systems, the mean organic carbon stock accumulation rate in the soil was 0.24 (0.09-0.46) Mg C ha(-1) yr(-1) at a depth of 30 cm and 0.65 (0.004-1.85) Mg C ha(-1) yr(-1) in the tree biomass. Increased SOC stocks were also found in deeper soil layers at two silvoarable sites. Young plantations stored additional SOC but mainly in the soil under the rows of trees, possibly as a result of the herbaceous vegetation growing in the rows. At the silvopastoral site, the SOC stock was significantly greater at a depth of 30-50 cm than in the control. Overall, this study showed the potential of agroforestry systems to store C in both soil and biomass in temperate regions.

The present study aimed at testing the potential of VNIRS for characterizing SSOC in the field, from spectra acquired on partially disturbed cores collected using a manual auger (thus not using cylinder sampling except for calibration), at 0–10, 10–20 and 20–30 cm depth in two agroforestry fields in France. Both fields were on silty Luvisols under temperate climate and included tree rows with grass cover, plowed interrows with cereals, and a conventional agricultural plot without trees. Conventional determination of SSOC involved bulk density measurement (cylinder method) and SOC concentration analysis (dry combustion) on the same samples, and was calculated as their product. VNIR spectra were acquired using an ASD LabSpec 2500 spectrophotometer, on the outer side of cores collected using a manual auger, at three points around the place where SSOC was determined. In total, 288 samples were studied (144 per field). Calibration with partial least squares regression was carried out on the 200 most spectrally representative samples, and validation was performed on the remaining samples. Considering the determination coefficient for validation (R2val), standard error of prediction corrected for bias (SEPc) and ratio of standard deviation of the validation subset to SEPc (denoted RPDval), the VNIRS prediction of SOC concentration was accurate (R2val = 0.75; SEPc = 1.6 gC kg− 1 soil < 2 mm, i.e. 13% of the mean; RPDval = 2.0). The prediction of SSOC was acceptable (R2val = 0.70; SEPc = 2.0 gC dm− 3, representing 13% of the mean; RPDval = 1.8). Part of the VNIRS prediction error could be attributed to the fact that conventional and spectral measurements were not made on the same samples. Scanning the cylinder cores would probably result in better VNIRS predictions but is not consistent with the objective of determining SSOC without tedious cylinder sampling (except for calibration). However, conventional determination of SOC concentration on auger cores (rather than on cylinder cores) could be a valuable solution for improving calibration, with the perspective to develop a rapid procedure for accurate VNIRS prediction of SOC stock in the field.

Abstract: UMR SYTEM : Equipe AMPLUS : Analyse et Modélisation du champ cultivé PLUrispécifique; Agroforestry systems, i.e., agroecosystems combining trees with farming practices, are of particular interest as they combine the potential to increase biomass and soil carbon (C) storage while maintaining an agricultural production. However, most present knowledge on the impact of agroforestry systems on soil organic carbon (SOC) storage comes from tropical systems. This study was conducted in southern France, in an 18-year-old agroforestry plot, where hybrid walnuts (Juglans regia × nigra L.) are intercropped with durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. subsp. durum), and in an adjacent agricultural control plot, where durum wheat is the sole crop. We quantified SOC stocks to 2.0 m depth and their spatial variability in relation to the distance to the trees and to the tree rows. The distribution of additional SOC storage in different soil particle-size fractions was also characterized. SOC accumulation rates between the agroforestry and the agricultural plots were 248 ± 31 kg C ha− 1 yr− 1 for an equivalent soil mass (ESM) of 4000 Mg ha− 1 (to 26–29 cm depth) and 350 ± 41 kg C ha− 1 yr− 1 for an ESM of 15,700 Mg ha− 1 (to 93–98 cm depth). SOC stocks were higher in the tree rows where herbaceous vegetation grew and where the soil was not tilled, but no effect of the distance to the trees (0 to 10 m) on SOC stocks was observed. Most of the additional SOC storage was found in coarse organic fractions (50–200 and 200–2000 μm), which may be rather labile fractions. All together our study demonstrated the potential of alley cropping agroforestry systems under Mediterranean conditions to store SOC, and questioned the stability of this storage.

Abstract: Short time scale (~days to year) soil incubation experiments have evidenced that mineralisation rate of soil organic carbon could be increased by higher fresh organic matter (FOM) inputs. This process could affect global soil C stocks but its importance has yet to be assessed at decennial or centennial time-scales. In this study, we analysed soil organic carbon (SOC) data from a 52-years old bare-fallow experiment in Grignon (France) where plots received no organic matter, or only fresh straw or composted straw. Treatments receiving fresh or composted straw showed no significant difference in SOC stocks dynamics over the 52 years, suggesting no long-term impact of priming effect. To go further, we evaluated whether soil organic matter (SOM) mineralisation rates differed between plots with no input and plots with FOM inputs, using simple models of SOC dynamics based on the Hénin-Dupuis formalism. Using a model with three SOC pools, we showed that estimated mineralisation rates were 3–4 times slower for the plots with no input, suggesting an important role of priming effect. However, a 4-pools model with first order kinetics could satisfactorily fit all the data using a same set of parameters. Our results did not assess the absence of priming effect on SOC stocks dynamics at decennial timescale, but suggest that priming effect is not necessarily a relevant process to explain long-term SOC dynamics. It would be worthwhile to test our modelling approach on other long-term datasets, in particular from more nitrogen-limited experiments and using other data giving complementary information on mineralisation rates, such as 14C.

Abstract: International audience; Background and Aims: Characterising the spatial distribution of tree fine roots (diameter ≤ 2 mm) is fundamental for a better understanding of tree functioning in agroforestry ecosystems. The absorptive function of fine roots is closely associated to aboveground tree performance and the amount of competition experienced by a tree partly depends on how root spatial distribution varies with soil depth in mixed systems. We therefore compared root interception densities (RID) and fine root orientation of trees grown in an alley cropping agroforestry stand (AF) with those in a monocropped (M) tree stand. Methods: Fieldwork was conducted in two 17 year old hybrid walnut (Juglans regia × nigra cv. NG23) stands in southern France: one was an alley cropping agroforestry stand with durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. subsp. durum) intercropped in strips between tree rows and the second was a monocropped stand with a natural understorey. One pit was dug in each stand to a depth of 1.6 m, and an additional pit was dug in the agroforestry stand to a depth of 4.0 m to examine the tree root distribution below the crop maximum rooting depth. Root intercepts were mapped on trench walls and soil cubes were sampled to assess 3D root orientation, and to establish a predictive model of root length densities (RLD).Results: In the monocropped stand, root mapping evidenced a very high RID in the top 0.5 m and a slight decrease with increasing soil depth, whereas in the agroforestry stand, RID was much lower for the same depth, but roots occupied a higher volume of soil. In the agroforestry stand, RID and RLD were higher within the tree row than in the inter-row at deeper depths. Tree fine roots in both stands were not preferentially oriented from the soil surface until a depth of 1.5 m, beneath which fine roots in the agroforestry stand were significantly more vertically oriented.Conclusions: Fine roots of intercropped walnut trees went significantly deeper indicating strong plasticity of root distribution. Deeper root systems would reduce direct competition from the crop and enable trees to access deeper water tables not available to the crop.

Abstract: Data available from the Dryad Digital Repository. doi:10.5061/dryad.q5bj6; International audience; There is a fundamental trade-off between leaf traits associated with either resource acquisition or resource conservation. This gradient of trait variation, called the economics spectrum, also applies to fine roots, but whether it is consistent for coarse roots or at the plant community level remains untested. We measured a set of morphological and chemical root traits at a community level (functional parameters; FP) in 20 plant communities located along land-use intensity gradients and across three climatic zones (tropical, mediterranean and montane). We hypothesized (i) the existence of a root economics spectrum in plant communities consistent within root types (fine, < 2 mm; coarse, 2–5 mm), (ii) that variations in root FP occur with soil depths (top 20 cm of soil and 100–150 cm deep) and (iii) along land-use gradients. Root FP covaried, in line with the resource acquisition–conservation trade-off, from communities with root FP associated with resource acquisition (e.g. high specific root length, SRL; thin diameters and low root dry matter contents, RDMC) to root FP associated with resource conservation (e.g. low SRL, thick diameters and high RDMC). This pattern was consistent for both fine and coarse roots indicating a strong consistency of a trade-off between resource acquisition and conservation for plant roots. Roots had different suites of traits at different depths, suggesting a disparity in root function and exploitation capacities. Shallow, fine roots were thinner, richer in nitrogen and with lower lignin concentrations associated with greater exploitation capacities compared to deep, fine roots. Shallow, coarse roots were richer in nitrogen, carbon and soluble concentrations than deep, coarse roots. Fine root parameters of highly disturbed, herbaceous-dominated plant communities in poorer soils were associated with foraging strategies, that is greater SRL and lower RDMC and lignin concentration than those from less disturbed communities. Coarse roots, however, were less sensitive to the land-use gradient. Synthesis. This study demonstrates the existence of a general trade-off in root construction at a community level, which operates within all root types, suggesting that all plant tissues are controlled by the trade-off between resource acquisition and conservation.

Abstract: During the spring of 2006, three willow varieties (SV1, SX67 and 9882-41) were established on marginal land in an agroforestry tree-intercropping arrangement where plots of short rotation willows were planted between rows (spaced 15 m apart) of 21-year-old mixed tree species. As a control, the same varieties were established on an adjacent piece of land without established trees (conventional willow system). This study investigated the magnitude of carbon pools, fine root and leaf biomass inputs and clone yields in both the tree-based intercropping (agroforestry) and conventional monocropping systems. Willow biomass yield was significantly higher in the agroforestry field (4.86 odt ha−1 y−1) compared to the conventional field (3.02 odt ha−1 y−1). In both fields, varieties SV1 and SX67 produced higher yields than the variety 9882-41. Willow fine root biomass in the top 20 cm of soil was significantly higher in the intercropping system (3,062 kg ha−1) than in the conventional system (2,536 kg ha−1). Differences in fine root biomass between clones were similar to that observed for differences in biomass yield: SV1 > SX67 > 9882-41. Leaf input was higher in the intercropping system (1,961 kg ha−1) than in the conventional system (1,673 kg ha−1). Clonal differences in leaf inputs followed the same trends as those for root biomass and yield: SV1 > SX67 > 9882-41. Soil organic carbon was significantly higher in the agroforestry field (1.94 %) than in the conventional field (1.82 %). A significant difference in soil organic carbon was found between the three clones: soils under clone 9882-41 had the lowest soil organic carbon at 1.80 %.

Abstract: Avec résumé d'étude - version finale de l’étude réalisée pour l'ADEME et le Ministère de l'Agriculture et de l'Environnement; Nous souhaitons ici avoir une pensée pour nos deux collègues Bassem Dimassi et Jérôme Balesdent, qui étaient impliqués dans cette étude et nous ont quittés prématurément. Bassem Dimassi avait travaillé au tout début de l’étude, en 2017, pour mener un travail de simulation préliminaire. Il s’agissait d’estimer des quantités de carbone à apporter au sol pour augmenter le stock de 4p1000 par an. Les résultats obtenus à l’échelle de la France et avec un haut niveau de résolution ont ainsi constitué une référence précieuse pour la suite de l’étude. Formé à l’Institut National d’Agronomie de Tunis en 2006, il avait construit sa trajectoire scientifique sur cette thématique du stockage de carbone dans le sol, encadré par Claire Chenu et Benoit Gabrielle en master, puis par Bruno Mary en thèse, et par Manuel Martin lors de son post doctorat au sein de l’unité InfoSol où il a travaillé jusqu’à la fin de l’année 2017. Bassem possédait une personnalité amicale, sincère et attachante, dont témoignent tous ceux qui ont pu le côtoyer. Jérôme Balesdent était un chercheur mondialement reconnu pour ses travaux sur la matière organique des sols, dont il a contribué à élucider la dynamique en mobilisant l’abondance relative des différents isotopes du carbone. En plus de cette brillante carrière, il s’était impliqué dans l’expertise scientifique, en participant en 2002 à l’expertise « Stocker du carbone dans les sols agricoles de France » puis à la présente étude, dans laquelle, au-delà du chapitre dont il était un des coordinateurs, il était très engagé pour stimuler la réflexion collective. C’est d’ailleurs dans une publication cosignée avec Dominique Arrouays en 19993 que l’on trouve la première mention de l’idée du 4 pour 1000 : « Les matières organiques des sols de la planète contiennent 1 500 milliards de tonnes de carbone, et constituent le plus gros réservoir superficiel échangeant du carbone avec l'atmosphère. Il s'agit d'une source ou d'un puits potentiel de CO2 énorme : à titre d'illustration, une augmentation annuelle de ce réservoir de seulement 0,4% par an stockerait autant de carbone que la combustion de carbone fossile n'en émet. » Jérôme avait mis beaucoup de son énergie dans ce travail d’appui aux politiques publiques, mobilisant ses connaissances, sa rigueur scientifique et son sens très fin des relations humaines. Il y voyait une forme d’engagement du chercheur pour contribuer à la résolution des enjeux planétaires. Sa disparition à l’été 2020 a plongé tous ses collègues dans une grande tristesse. Sa modestie, son ouverture d’esprit et sa bienveillance étaient reconnues et appréciées de toutes et tous.

Abstract: International audience; The recent controversy about the 4 per 1000 initiative has emphasized the need for a quantitative assessment of the C storage potential of agricultural soils. Moreover a clear distinction is required between the biophysically and the economically achievable potentials. Here we used a modelling approach at a fine spatial-scale resolution (< 8 km2) to quantify the additional C storage in agricultural soils of mainland France following the implementation, when feasible, of a range of soil C storing practices (i.e. cover crops, reduced tillage, new C inputs, grazing instead of mowing,…). The additional cost for farmers was also calculated, thus yielding the cost per Mg of additional C stored in soils. Results showed that the average additional C storage calculated over 30 years ranged between +0.028 and + 0.466 Mg C ha-1 yr-1 (i.e. between +0.5 and +7.2‰) for the different tested practices, with a very high spatial variability over France for each practice related to initial C stocks and pedo-climatic conditions. The storing practices where then ranked according to the cost of the additional C stored in soils (expressed in euro per Mg of C) and an optimal cost-efficient strategy was proposed at the national level.
