1. Seasonal calving in European Prehistoric cattle and its impacts on milk availability and cheese-making

Abstract: Abstract Present-day domestic cattle are reproductively active throughout the year, which is a major asset for dairy production. Large wild ungulates, in contrast, are seasonal breeders, as were the last historic representatives of the aurochs, the wild ancestors of cattle. Aseasonal reproduction in cattle is a consequence of domestication and herding, but exactly when this capacity developed in domestic cattle is still unknown and the extent to which early farming communities controlled the seasonality of reproduction is debated. Seasonal or aseasonal calving would have shaped the socio-economic practices of ancient farming societies differently, structuring the agropastoral calendar and determining milk availability where dairying is attested. In this study, we reconstruct the calving pattern through the analysis of stable oxygen isotope ratios of cattle tooth enamel from 18 sites across Europe, dating from the 6th mill. cal BC (Early Neolithic) in the Balkans to the 4th mill. cal BC (Middle Neolithic) in Western Europe. Seasonal calving prevailed in Europe between the 6th and 4th millennia cal BC. These results suggest that cattle agropastoral systems in Neolithic Europe were strongly constrained by environmental factors, in particular forage resources. The ensuing fluctuations in milk availability would account for cheese-making, transforming a seasonal milk supply into a storable product.

Abstract: International audience; Recent archaeological research has highlighted the potential role of mobile pastoral groups in the diffusion of raw materials and technological innovations between the southern Caucasus and north‐western Iran from the Neolithic onwards. Two successive projects, PAST‐OBS and SCOPE, were designed to explore this hypothesis through the study of obsidian consumption patterns from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age using a flexible analytical strategy that considerably extends the scale of obsidian studies in these regions. By focusing on the exploitation of obsidian at multiple levels—local, regional and interregional—we hope to unravel the complexity of the obsidian networks under study. The aim of this paper is to present (1) a reassessment of the work so far carried out by previous obsidian studies, with a view to homogenizing and to clarifying the nomenclature in use; and (2) an introduction to the PAST‐OBS and SCOPE projects in order to initiate a discussion of our preliminary results.

Abstract: International audience; Herd mobility is a key parameter of many agro-pastoral strategies. Sequential variationsof oxygen, carbon and strontium isotope ratios in ruminant teeth are commonly used forcharacterizing herd mobility along altitudinal gradients and across geological areas. Towhat extent is the variation and covariation of isotopic ratios along a tooth actuallyreflecting vertical and geological mobility? The interpretation of such data fomarchaeological material widely depends on our ability to answer to this question. Fewmodern baselines are available to assess covariation of oxygen and carbon isotope ratiosalong the tooth of modern sheep experiencing vertical mobilities. There are no suchbaselines for the covariation of strontium, oxygen and carbon isotope ratios. Our studyaimed at analyzing the variation and covariation of isotope ratios of oxygen, carbon, andstrontium in the teeth and guard hair of domestic ruminants experiencing differentpastoral mobilities along altitudinal gradients and across geological areas. We sampledlower molars from one cow and 17 sheep, as well as the guard hair from five goats, allgrazing in different mountainous areas of Azerbaijan (Nakhchivan, Ganja-Qazakh, andLankaran regions) at least part of the year. Our results suggest that the covariation ofthe isotope ratios of oxygen and carbon allow to spot easily the specimens movingseasonally between the plains and the highlands and also between the subalpine zoneand the highland meadows. To a lesser extent it is possible to sort two-staged annualmobility from four-staged annual mobility. The variations in strontium isotope ratiosduring the period of enamel formation also adequately reflect seasonal mobility but itdeeply depends on the number of samples analyzed along the tooth crown. These resultsallow us to interpret isotope ratio variations in archaeological domestic ruminant teeth inorder to analyze the role of herd mobilities in past agro-pastoral communities.

Abstract: International audience; The exploitation of montane ecosystems by agro-pastoral communities has played an important role in the development of thesesocieties in the Caucasus. Mountains can be constraining in winter as snow prevents access to pastures and constrains animal husbandry,but they also provide access to natural resources such as copper ores, obsidian and pastures. As human occupation in theCaucasus mountains is still very little studied, the archaeozoological approach makes it possible to test the hypothesis that zootechnicalinnovations have led to a more substantial implementation of human communities in the montane ecosystems. The studyof faunal remains makes it possible to account for the species that has been exploited (domestic or wild). Cementochronologicalanalyses of herbivores teeth will allow us to determine the seasons of occupation of the sites. Finally, it will be possible to investigatepastoral mobility (horizontal, vertical, etc.), herd feeding (use of fodder) and births seasonality with isotopic ratio analyses in bioapatite (carbon, oxygen, strontium) and collagen (nitrogen, carbon). The first results from various Georgian Chalcolithic and EarlyBronze Age archaeological sites will be discussed in this presentation.

Abstract: The house mouse (Mus musculus) represents the extreme of globalization of invasive mammals. However, the timing and basis of its origin and early phases of dispersal remain poorly documented. To track its synanthropisation and subsequent invasive spread during the develoment of complex human societies, we analyzed 829 Mus specimens from 43 archaeological contexts in Southwestern Asia and Southeastern Europe, between 40,000 and 3,000 cal. BP, combining geometric morphometrics numerical taxonomy, ancient mitochondrial DNA and direct radiocarbon dating. We found that large late hunter-gatherer sedentary settlements in the Levant, c. 14,500 cal. BP, promoted the commensal behaviour of the house mouse, which probably led the commensal pathway to cat domestication. House mouse invasive spread was then fostered through the emergence of agriculture throughout the Near East 12,000 years ago. Stowaway transport of house mice to Cyprus can be inferred as early as 10,800 years ago. However, the house mouse invasion of Europe did not happen until the development of proto urbanism and exchange networks — 6,500 years ago in Eastern Europe and 4000 years ago in Southern Europe — which in turn may have driven the first human mediated dispersal of cats in Europe.

Abstract: Southwest Asia is at the epicenter of zooarchaeological research on pivotal changes in human history such as animal domestication and the emergence of social complexity. This volume continues the long tradition of the ASWA conference series in publishing new research results in the zooarchaeology of southwest Asia and adjacent areas. The book is organized in three thematic areas. The first presents new methodological tools and approaches in the study of animal remains exemplified through studies on domestication, butchery practices, microdebris, intrasite contextual comparisons and age-at-death recording. Besides offering interesting insights into our past, these methodological developments enable higher resolution for future research. The second section focuses on the subsistence economies of prehistoric and early complex societies and provides new insights into how animal management developed in southwest Asia. The third section includes intriguing new research results on the roles of animals in the symbolic world of ancient societies, such as the meaning of insect figures at Gobekli Tepe, animal cults in Egypt, feasting in Iron Age Oman, and the ornithological interpretation of Byzantine mosaics.

Abstract: International audience; Domestic animals and plants were introduced to Europe from the Near East and subsequently spread acrossEurope, entailing adaptations to different environments with consequences for the biology of organisms, agropastoraltechnical systems and socio-economic organisation. Agriculture was introduced to Central Europe byLinearbandkeramik (LBK) societies between 5600 and 4900 cal. BC, in predominantly forested environments.LBK farming systems involved intensive permanent field cultivation in natural openings. Milking was practicedas evidenced from cattle mortality profiles and lipid residues in ceramics. Questions arise as to what extent LBKcattle husbandry relied on woodland, and as to whether the seasonal scarcity of fodder conditioned cattle reproductioncycles, with consequences on milk availability. Results from the δ13C and δ18O analysis of cattle toothenamel at Chotěbudice and Černý Vůl (Bohemia, Czech Republic) suggest a limited use of dense forest for cattleherding, even on a seasonal scale: cattle were kept in the open component of the forest/steppe mosaic landscape.Winter forest browsing/provision of leafy fodder was evidenced in one specimen. At Chotěbudice, cattle birthsmainly occurred over a two to three-month period, suggesting environmental constraints on cattle fertility cycles,and possibly seasonal fodder scarcity. A direct consequence of this would be a shorter period of milkavailability throughout the year.

Abstract: A large part of consumed products in the proto-historic Near East was retrieved from animals. Most zooarchaeological analyses are based on the study of remains from animal skeletons (such as bones and teeth) and therefore reflect the consumption of meat and eventually marrow, fat and blood. The consumption of other animal products such as milk can be shown indirectly through the study of human skeletal remains and organic residue analysis on pottery in addition to the study of slaughtering age profiles of animals (Vigne, Helmer 2007; see also Rosenstock in this contribution).

Abstract: In Anatolia (and the Near East in general) archaeological excavations occur more often in large urban centers than rural settlements. Consequently, our understanding of past subsistence practices is mainly based on assemblages from urban contexts. Solely urban subsistence strategies cannot be used for determining regional trends. The study of 17 faunal assemblages from urban and rural settlements located in the Upper Tigris River area illustrates the intra-regional variability of subsistence practices and its evolution from the beginning of the second to the middle of the first millennia BCE, demonstrating that consumers had preferential access to sheep and goats while producers had a diversified stock-breeding strategy that exploited relatively more cattle and pigs.

Abstract: The effects of foreign military interventions on production and distribution systems in occupied lands are commonly assessed through the study of textual sources and pottery typologies in Bronze Age archaeology and historiography. In this article, we explore the zooarchaeological record of the recently uncovered Late Bronze IIA deposits at Alalakh (Tell Atchana) to test whether the Hittite intrusion into Syria had any effect on the economic organization of local policies. The quantitative analysis of taxonomic compositions, mortality profiles, and body part distributions suggests that while slight modifications occurred in the distribution of provisions, the faunal economy of Alalakh did not go through drastic changes under Hittite rule.

Abstract: The formative processes of the Kura-Araxes cultural complex, in particular the date and circumstances of its rise, have been debated for decades. This article takes advantage of the recent data retrieved from Ovçular Tepesi, a Late Chalcolithic settlement located in Nakhchivan by the Arpaçay river, to demonstrate that the earliest manifestation of the Kura-Araxes phenomenon should be dated back at least to the last quarter of the 5th millennium BC. More importantly, since the early Kura-Araxes pottery from Ovçular Tepesi was found within the Late Chalcolithic habitat together with buff-coloured Chaff-Faced Ware, we make use of technological and functional evidence to argue that the coexistence of Kura-Araxes and Chaff-Faced vessels corresponds to a multicultural settlement pattern, which involves two human communities that interact at the regional level. We then compare this pattern with later examples of multiculturalism involving Kura-Araxes societies in the Kura and Euphrates basins, but also in Palestine., Les processus de formation du complexe culturel Kura-Araxe, notamment la date et les circonstances de son développement, font l’objet de débats depuis des décennies. Cet article y contribue à travers la présentation de données récentes provenant d’Ovçular Tepesi, établissement situé au Nakhchivan au bord de la rivière Arpaçay. pour démontrer que la plus ancienne apparition du phénomène Kura-Araxe remonte au moins au dernier quart du 5e millénaire av. J.-C. Abstract: Socio-economic organisation, subsistence strategies and environmental exploitation still remain largely open questions for the Late Chalcolithic period (ca. 4500–3500 BC) in southern Caucasus even though they are of prime importance for understanding the development of post-Neolithic societies in these semi-arid and mountainous areas. Interdisciplinary bioarchaeological research can, however, provide valuable new insights into these issues. In the Late Chalcolithic occupation layers at Ovcular Tepesi (Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, Azerbaijan), the fills of pits, composed mainly of domestic refuse, proved to contain the richest and most diverse assemblages of biological remains at the site. These remains, retrieved by the use of flotation and sieving techniques, therefore constitute ideal assemblages for understanding subsistence strategies and the exploitation of natural resources. It is shown here that the agricultural economy at Late Chalcolithic Ovcular Tepesi was based mainly on the cultivation of cereals and pulses and the herding of sheep and goat. The river and its surroundings provided wood fuel and fish. The results of the bioarchaeological study further suggest that the Late Chalcolithic village was occupied permanently as shown by the development of commensal populations of small mammals.

Abstract: Transcaucasia comprises a key region for understanding the history of both the hybrid zone between house mouse lineages and the dispersal of the Neolithic way of life outside its Near Eastern cradle. The opportunity to document the colonization history of both men and mice in Transcaucasia was made possible by the discovery of mouse remains accumulated in pits from a 6000-year-old farming village in the Nakhchivan (Autonomous Republic of Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan). The present study investigated their taxonomy and most likely dispersal path through the identification of the Mus lineage to which they might belong using a geometric morphometric approach of dental traits distances between archaeological and modern populations of the different Mus lineages of South-West Asia. We demonstrate that the mouse remains trapped in the deep storage pits of the dwelling belong to the Mus musculus domesticus from the Near East, with dental shapes similar to current populations in Northern Syria. These results strongly suggest that the domesticus lineage was dispersed into Transcaucasia from the upper Euphrates valley by Neolithic migration, some time between the 7th and 5th millennium BC, providing substantial evidence to back up the scenario featuring near-eastern stimuli in the emergence of agriculture in the South Caucasus. The domesticus mitochondrial DNA signature of the current house mouse in the same location 5000 years later, as well as their turnover towards a subspecies musculus/castaneus phenotype, suggests that early domesticus colonizers hybridized with a later musculus (and maybe castaneus) dispersal originating from south of the Caspian Sea and/or Northern Caucasia. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 108, 917-928.

Abstract: Excavations at Kavuşan Höyük (south-eastern Turkey) have revealed evidence of the use of turtles, tortoises and terrapins in post-Assyrian funerary practices. Of particular significance are the remains of the Euphrates soft-shelled turtle (Rafetus euphraticus), distinguished from other species of turtle by their quantity and treatment in the burial pit under investigation here. The unique finds from Kavuşan Höyük, coupled with archaeological and textual records, underline the economic and symbolic significance of these animals for communities in prehistoric and early historical Mesopotamia., Kavuşan Höyük'te (Türkiye'nin güneydoğusu) yapılan kazılar, Asur sonrası cenaze uygulamalarında kaplumbağaların, kaplumbağaların ve su kaplumbağalarının kullanıldığına dair kanıtlar ortaya çıkardı. Fırat yumuşak kabuklu kaplumbağasının (Rafetus euphraticus) kalıntıları, burada incelenmekte olan mezar çukurunda miktarları ve muameleleri ile diğer kaplumbağa türlerinden ayrılmaktadır. Abstract: International audience; Hybrid camels, intentional crosses between dromedaries and bactrian camels, are prized for their robustness and endurance. They were the prime vehicles of short and long distance caravan trade in a large area between Greece and Mongolia until the whole-scale introduction of motorized transport. This paper proposes a model for the zooarchaeological study of camel hybridization as a culture-historical phenomenon based on ethnographic and ethnohistoric observations of camel wrestling. Camel wrestling spectacles involve large audiences who gather in large arenas to watch first generation male hybrid camels wrestle during the mating season. While Anatolia was chosen as a case region for testing the model, it can be applied to all regions where hybrids are expected to occur in the archaeological record.; Les chameaux hybrides, issus du croisement intentionnel du chameau de Bactriane et du dromadaire, sont prisés pour leur robustesse et leur endurance. Jusqu’à l’introduction des véhicules à moteur pour le transport de marchandises, les chameaux hybrides étaient les meilleurs moyens de transport pour les caravanes qui permettaient de commercer à courte et longue distance dans une vaste région allant de la Grèce à la Mongolie. Basé sur des observations ethnographiques et ethno-historiques des combats de chameaux, cet article propose un modèle pour l’étude archéozoologique de l’hybridation des chameaux en tant que phénomène culturel et historique. De nombreux spectateurs se rassemblent dans de grandes arènes pour assister aux combats de chameaux mâles hybrides de première génération pendant la période de rut. Le modèle proposé a été testé en Anatolie mais peut être appliqué à toutes les régions où des restes de chameaux hybrides figurent parmi le matériel archéologique.

Abstract: International audience; The fourth and fifth seasons of archaeological work at Hirbemerdon Tepe have been crucial for further developing the three major research objectives of the Hirbemerdon Tepe Archaeological Project, which can be summarized as follows: 1) the definition of a clear chronological sequence of occupation at the site; 2) a more complete understanding of the function of the Middle Bronze Age ‘architectural complex’ located in the High Mound; and 3) the initiation of an intensive survey that will interpret the site catchment and exploitation area (5 km radius on the Tigris’ right bank totaling 48 km2). Thus, this preliminary report represents a collection of the different studies performed during these two years of archaeological work and will elaborate on the abovementioned objectives. More specifically, attention will be given to new information gained about architectural features, the pottery assemblages, the stone implements, and the paleobotanical and archaeozoological data yielded from within the ‘architectural complex,’ followed by the placement of the site in its broader regional context.

Abstract: Present-day domestic cattle are reproductively active throughout the year, which is a major asset for dairy production. Large wild ungulates, in contrast, are seasonal breeders, as were the last historic representatives of the aurochs, the wild ancestors of cattle. Aseasonal reproduction in cattle is a consequence of domestication and herding, but exactly when this capacity developed in domestic cattle is still unknown and the extent to which early farming communities controlled the seasonality of reproduction is debated. Seasonal or aseasonal calving would have shaped the socio-economic practices of ancient farming societies differently, structuring the agropastoral calendar and determining milk availability where dairying is attested. In this study, we reconstruct the calving pattern through the analysis of stable oxygen isotope ratios of cattle tooth enamel from 18 sites across Europe, dating from the 6th mill. cal BC (Early Neolithic) in the Balkans to the 4th mill. cal BC (Middle Neolithic) in Western Europe. Seasonal calving prevailed in Europe between the 6th and 4th millennia cal BC. These results suggest that cattle agropastoral systems in Neolithic Europe were strongly constrained by environmental factors, in particular forage resources. The ensuing fluctuations in milk availability would account for cheese-making, transforming a seasonal milk supply into a storable product.

Abstract: International audience; The EVOSHEEP project focuses on the complex history of early sheep (Ovis aries) husbandry in Southwest Asia between the Late Neolithic and Late Bronze Age using a multi proxy approach (morphometrics, genetics, iconography) to identify the biological and anthropological components behind the emergence and development of early sheep breeds. One of the challenges in this approach is to be able to disentangle the impact of anthropogenic selective pressure from ecological conditions on the skeletal morphology of sheep on a large scale. As a first step towards this understanding, we first explored the extent of morphology diversity and change in domestic sheep populations across southwestern Asia over the last 8,000 years. Using the recent development in virtual morphometrics on distal humerus, calcaneum and astragalus bones, this paper will present our latest thoughts from the comparative study of ancient sheep from forty archaeological sites across Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Iran between the 6th and the 1st millennium BC with current traditional breeds of sheep from Middle East and Eastern Africa whose husbandry practices are well documented.

Abstract: The systematic zooarchaeological study of faunal assemblages from the excavations carried out between 2011 and 2016 by the Joint Turco–Italian Archaeological Expedition at Karkemish (province of Karkamış, Gaziantep, Turkey) is based on a sample of about ten thousand osteological remains. Data derive from different sectors of the urban settlement, including administrative, cultic, productive, residential, and funerary areas from the beginning of the Late Bronze Age down to the Iron IV/Achaemenid period. The faunal assemblage presents a good level of preservation with 30% of the sample determined to species level. Domestic animals were predominant in all periods, with sheep and goats covering almost half of the Number of Identified Specimens (NISP), followed by cattle and equids—both donkeys and horses— while pigs, dogs, and camels are rather scarce. The animal economy of Karkemish was evidently based on pastoralism, including the exploitation of both primary and secondary products as showed by the estimation of age-at-death. Wild animals were rare but included deer, fallow deer, and gazelle, and some exceptional examples of exotic animals.
